Between 30 October 2014 and 15 February 2016, CF-18 fighter pilots conducted 251 air strikes over Iraq and Syria in support of the coalition air campaign Operation IMPACT. Vulnerable to a combination of unique stressors associated with air-to-ground combat, fighterpilots were also exposed to Canadian media accusations of moral violations resulting from civilian casualties. No research to date has been conducted specifically on combat experiences and the well-being of active fighter pilots. Situated at the crossroads of human sciences and theology, this inquiry is guided by the following research question: What theological insights into Canadian fighter pilot air-to-ground combat experiences would help military stakeholders make decisions contributing to pilot well-being as pilots prepare for and participate in future air campaigns? Research Approach. The researcher, a military chaplain, interviewed six CF-18 fighter pilots stationed at Canadian Forces Base Bagotville who supported Operation IMPACT. Six transcribed pilot interviews became the pilot corpus analyzed for this inquiry. Using a multi-method approach within the phenomenological genre of the qualitative research tradition, the meaning pilots attributed to their combat experience was analyzed first, by an empathic reading, then by a critical reading of the pilot corpus. From this analysis, stress and the diptych honour/shame were identified, respectively, as the key phenomena to interpreting pilot combat experiences. Since stress and honour/shame are universal to all humanity, an understanding of these phenomena was enriched through an analysis of a theological corpus of literature from the past. The gospel corpus, comprised of the four gospel accounts within the canon of the New Testament, provided an account of the life-world of Jesus Christ and other biblical characters. Examples of the phenomena of stress and honour/shame were identified in the gospel corpus and interpreted using a textual, sociological, and experiential orientation. Two specific episodes, Luke 7:36-50 and Luke 15:11-32, were then analyzed in more depth. Conclusions. From the analysis of the pilot corpus and the analysis of the gospel corpus, an interpretive dialogue between the human sciences and the Christian tradition was undertaken. As a result of this discussion, our understanding of honour/shame experienced by biblical characters is enriched. In addition, recommendations are offered to assist in the formulation of policies and practices that will improve the well-being of our CF-18 fighter pilots as they prepare for and participate in future air campaigns.
Brulé, Dominique. "Les expériences religieuses de Thomas Merton dans son autobiographie (1927-1941)". Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LORR0381.
Before becoming the famous spiritual writer we know, Thomas Merton (1915-1968) had a chaotic way of conversion he encounters in his autobiography (The seven storey mountain). If the studies of his life course (1915-1941) and his stay in France (1925-1928) shows the richness and complexity of this journey, it is his autobiographical account which shows the best his way of conversion. Seven religious experiences come out of his struggle which built his spiritual identity that was already steady before his entry at the Trappist monastery of Gethsemani. Since his first experience that happened in France (1927, 12 years old) until the one that took place on Monday before Easter in war time (1941, 26 years old), these experiences occurred in three steps building his spiritual identity, that is to say from the faith exile to his moment of abandon into Christ. These experiences – as library as theological – show what was missing in the Mertonian studies

This PhD analyses videos directed, produced and uploaded on Internet by the main actors of 2003 Iraq War. It mixes historical and aesthetical problematic, and questions thematic as: intentionality, writing configuration, temporality and reception of these visual documents. Since it’s distributed on the Internet, we also need to observe migration, virality and sustainability phenomenon. We proposed the storytelling of soldiers’ war experience through their own film productions. We also observed how external viewers understood these footages. This PhD also carried the project of setting and securing a writing process that is always moving due to the freedom that the Internet gives. Accordingly, It was important to give back to this transformable data its historical substance. But we also needed to analyze it though cinematographic tools, since the authors of the films also used the cinematographic language. We observed their composition and directing choices, the storytelling they proposed, the editing choices, and also the cultural and artistic inspirations that may have influenced their work. Eventually, these footages, released online, finally reached movie industry, and great directors worked on this material – for example Brian de Palma or Ang Lee

For each Allied army, the mortality peaks during World War I testify to the impact of the massive changes occurring in all elements of modern combat at the end of the 19th century, and the beginning of the 20th. Those change have both "cultural" and "physical" elements, which combine to set the outcome of the battle. But these adjustments are neither automatic, nor instantaneous.Actually, the initial imbalances at the onset of the "entry into the war " for each army (August 1914 for the French, July 1916 for the British, June 1918 for the Americans), will be such that they will doom the troops to slaughter. Then, each army, collectively as well as individually, will learn more or less quickly from their mistakes. Not all of them will do so at the same pace. Moreover, the transmission of experience from one Army to another will turn out to be difficult, if not impossible

Central Africa has been characterized by a very long thirty years war from the 1880s to the 1900s as the Congo Free State, the private property of the King of the Belgians Leopold II, was built up in the region. This thesis aims at analysing armed violence and conflicts occurring in the Congo area at the end of the 19th Century and studying war experiences of European soldiers involved in the colonial conquest – also named “conquistadors”. This research is based on a various sources such as private archives (letters, memoirs, notebooks), state archives (commission of inquiry) and iconographic material (drawings, photographs), embracing a large social history of those soldiers from their departure to the Congo to their return in Europe. The analysis of their representations and practices during the colonial conquest period reveals one key element, i.e. the importance of their relationship to nature and wildlife. As fierce hunters they define the natural world and populations as many examples of savagery that need to be domesticated and controlled. Thus this research showcases the strong links established by those men between hunting and war of conquest. Those European soldiers think of themselves as powerful chiefs, well armed and helped by a mighty colonial army, the Force Publique. They have developed hunting gestures and practices that helped them to submit indigenous peoples and impose forced labour. This thesis especially argues that such hunting model is very significant in the rubber wars that were led by the Congo Free State and private companies; it also shows the importance of trophies in colonial war experiences. The links between hunting and war are finally well-exemplified back in Europe when those soldiers displayed African items and animal trophies
Cosson, Olivier. "Horizons d'attente et expériences d'observation au début du XXe siècle : les militaires français face aux conflits périphériques (Afrique du Sud, Mandchourie, Balkans)". Paris, EHESS, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006EHES0020.
The notions of horizon of expectation, experience, and violence, are central for this study of the 1899-1914 sequence. This period, wich also makes up the 1914-1918 pre war period, is approached thanks to the French military, political and cultural reflect of their time, and also anticipation source, the origin of projections in a Franco-German war horizon. Besides the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), the main military event of the time, the South African War (1899-1902) and the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) had an influence on the shaping up of future war representations. War observations of peripherical conflicts by military attachés but also war correspondents and medical staffs, allows to go through a process of historical anthropology enlightening the role of perceived and peace time culturally built violence in the intellectual and doctrinal deviation that constitutes in the French army, from 1905, a temporality of anticipated cultural mobilization

At the beginning of the year 1414, a few months before the opening of the constance council, the three estates of the comtat venaissindecided to launch a general survey of all the possessions (lands and revenues), whatever their status, lay, clerical, noble or alien, in order to revise the tax assessments. The estimation was done village (or town) by village, and the books (called cadastres in modern catalogues) were finished and handed to the notary of the three estates in 1415. In spite of the insistence of the rector, they could never be made operational. In 1419, in the aftermath of the election of martin v, a new tallage allocation was instituted, which took the castres into account only inasmuch as the communities were concerned. The first part of the thesis, "the meaning of the text: une affaire d'etat", shows what upheavals were implied by the manufacture and use of the cadastres, how they triggered a crisis which led to the affirmation of its privilege by the nobility. As for the cadastres, they were definitively left aside. The second part of the thesis, "the object of the text: the land", takes into account the quantitative data of the cadastres in order to study the land's occupation (one can see the prevalence of arable land, as well as the far greater importance of vineyards as compared to the nineteenth century situation, and some trends toward specialization), and also to study the distribution of the land (one can see it is extremely parcelled). The third part of the thesis, " beyond the text: praxis", is an attempt to rediscover the relationships between cultivation and possession, by the way of a comparison of these cadastres with actually contemporary notaries' records- this is possible in eight villages and town out of forty six the cadastre of which is still available. Modern praxis emerges, with a significant involvment of nobility

The nature of dark energy and dark matter is still unknown today. Light scalar field models have been proposed to explain the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe and the apparent abundance of non-baryonic matter. In the first part of this thesis, the Galileon theory, a well-posed modified gravity theory preserving the local gravitation thanks to the Vainshtein screening effect, is accurately tested against recent cosmological data. Observational constraints are derived on the model parameters using cosmological distance and growth rate of structure measurements. A good agreement is observed between data and theory predictions. The Galileon theory appears therefore as a promising alternative to the cosmological constant scenario. In the second part, the dark matter question is explored through an extra-dimension theory containing massive and stable scalar fields called Branons. Branon production is searched for in the proton-proton collisions that were collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with a single photon and transverse missing energy are selected in this data set and compared to the Standard Model and instrumental background estimates. No signature of new physics is observed, so experimental limits on the Branon model parameters are derived. This thesis concludes with some ideas to reach an unified description of both models in the frame of extra-dimension theories
