Texto completoThe modern communications environment is constantly evolving as a result of the multiplication of new information technologies over the last twenty years. The global digital movement is influencing communication strategies by taking advantage of the new opportunities offered by digital social networks. The world of sport is also embracing these new communication codes, and it has become so common to follow sports news online or on socionumeric platforms that it seems almost impossible to think of communication strategies without these new resources. Has this digital communication, in its informational dimension and its technical aspects, redefined the communication and promotional models of the sporting world to such an extent? In an approach based on the pluridisciplinary strength of the Humanities and Social Sciences, this research work presents a discussion between event-based sport, its conception and the opportunities offered by digital technology in its strategies. To do this, we use the question of attendance in sports venues and spectator communities to put a social and digital scheme into perspective. We therefore propose a reasoning between sociotechnical concepts, innovation and human relationships through digital tools in order to understand the challenges of sports organisations in communicational terms. The aim of this development is also to measure the real impact of digital social platforms in a context where societal interest and a certain shift in usage towards digital technology give them unlimited legitimacy. With humility and specificity, this research proposes a measured and argumented approach to this contemporary phenomenon through a problematic issue arising from the world of sport

Texto completoSince the 90s, scientific works on the impact of sports events has been mainly focusing on economics. However, for some years now, intangible effects related to social dimension of these events are increasingly studied. In this context, this work aims to understand the impacts of recurring sports events based in Paris. Started from an extensive census, this work analyzes 9 case studies representative of the observed diversity of sporting events in Paris. Data collection is based on in situ observations (11), semi-directives interviews (41), and documentary analyses. Based on grounded theory which uses a fieldwork approach to yield a theoretical framework, the analysis demonstrates that the understanding of local stakes can only be achieved through a precise contextualization of local situations and political willingness. This inductive pathway launches two analytical determinations: (1) to build a way to analyze interplays of actors that reveal the centrality of the public entity in the networking process (2) to highlight the intangible relationship between the event and its host territory, through the concept of “territorial anchorage.” These developments lead to the proposal of a “model of the local dynamics”. This model aim to apprehend all that revolves around the sporting event: from what allows it to emerge to what it generates. In conclusion, regarding the decisive role of the public entity within Parisian’s sporting events, a more global approach is envisaged where the aggregation of local dynamics could evolve into a territorial dynamic, beginning with a portfolio of complementary sports events

Texto completoAccording some evidences, mega events can play a significant role in local development and competitiveness. This benefit is generally due to the catalyst effect of a series of factors related to infrastructure, tourism and local population welfare/quality of life. However, mega events also have potential downsides. In order to assess the cost-benefit of hosting them, we usually measure its socio-economic outcomes and impacts. Nevertheless, recent studies indicate positive intangible impacts as potentially important benefits. The intangible assets have become strategic factors for value creation, and are considered central factors to economies’ growth and competitiveness. However, the existence of reliable operational methods to assess and evaluate the mega events intangible aspects is still unclear. Thus, the present study objective is to develop a performance model for measure and evaluate the mega event projects impacts, taking into account the intangible assets. To perform it, we applied the design science research (DSR) paradigm. The DSR is based on the act of creating an applicable solution, typically an artifact, to solve a relevant complex problem that taking into consideration the context in which their results will be applied, in a search process that draws from existing theories to come up with a solution. To prevent the lack of a real-life event context and a well-defined objective to the impact analysis we developed the model focusing on the 2014 FIFA World Cup interventions in the Tourism industry at the Rio de Janeiro region. Based on the traditional intangible measurement theory, we developed a theoretical framework and an operational model to gather the relevant intangible success factors. We named it the Mega Event Intangibles Impacts (ME-I2) Model. It consists of five dimensions of the intangible capital, each one incorporating a group of assets, 15 as a whole, and 42 indicators to measure the performance of the interventions in developing such assets. The ME-I2 model returns three different outcomes. The degree of importance (relative value) for each dimension of intangible capital, performance ratings for the mega event interventions in an overall fashion and concerning each capital dimension, and the dynamic value of the intangible capital. We tested the ME-I2 model in a pilot-study and the model showed its adequacy and appropriateness, seeming to us an interesting tool to provide information for effective strategic management and decision-making focused on contribute to translate more effectively the intangible impacts into tangible improved value creation (legacies) for the host city/country. It maps the perceptions and expectations of the mega event stakeholders and could be a valuable font of information in regard of some intangible success factors that could improve the mega event performance

Texto completoAccidents/incidents occur, despite important legal constraints concerning the organization of outdoor sporting events. This thesis therefore aims to bring fresh thinking, at the crossroads of law and social sciences, in order to confront the prescribed orders to the actual practices on the field. The study employed a multiple-qualitative methodology, by ensuring contractual, regulatory and case law legal aid, by observation (participants or not, announced or not) and by semi-directive exploratory talks. Twenty outdoor sporting events were investigated: from small (n = 14) to big (n = 6) scale, essentially competitive (n = 18), organized within a federal framework (n = 12) by associational structures (n = 16). The results of the study show the following: 1/ relative effectiveness of applicable rules, according to the nature of the organizing structures, the rules and the sporting events in question, the level of knowledge of rules learnt by the relevant parties, the progress of the event; 2/ ambiguities and recurring deficits within the organizations, coupled with the ineffectiveness of rules in terms of gaps and loopholes, enabling the actors to be eligible for areas of freedom; 3/ independent regulations disconnected from control mechanisms not biased in favor of developing joint rules that are prone to be better understood, accepted, and thus duly applied. The present study shows that the security of outdoor sporting events has room for improvement. A number of recommendations is thus formulated alongside preventive actions already undertaken

Texto completoThis dissertation addresses the issue of risk management during Sports Mega Events (SME). It deals with the theoretical concepts of configuration and that of governance, and addresses the discussions and impact surrounding these sports events. Organizational aspects are analyzed from a critical angle, making for a better understanding of the equation: security forces, interdependencies, power relations and tensions between the elements that come into play. These dimensions are questioned from the point of view of surveillance and that of social control. This dissertation falls into two parts: first, I develop a theoretical framework and assess the transferability of models in the context of sporting events. I then study the empirical case of the 2006 Football World Cup. How were security policies introduced as part of Mega-Events cultural and social economic policies? Additionally, how were SMEs mobilized to influence national security policies? The German case may lead to future changes in security systems for the organization of this type of event. This study highlights the process of developing safety initiatives during SMEs: from identification of risk as constructed by security managers to the implementation of safety devices and its consequences. These stages are discussed in relation to the security threat and freedom triangle. The World Cup of 2006 is an illustration of the tensions in managing the security of SMEs. Methods which are traditionally used in other realms were applied in the sporting context of this World Cup raise a number of issues, notably the consequences security policies may have on individual freedoms. Despite the apparent success of the World Cup, this study examines the question of security organization and discusses the issues raised

Texto completoThe future events, non actual and still unknown, are often similar to meaningless phenomena on a rational and well-founded way. Nevertheless, written press journalists regularly report the big current events to come in the national dailies. It means that many political, sports and cultural events, which are media scheduled, have not yet occurred. Bearing this in mind, this doctoral thesis depicts the process of " proactive mediatisation ", which aims at understanding how some journalists from Le Monde, Le Figaro and Libération objectively succeed in giving a meaning to the Beijing Olympic Games several years before their staging. A qualitative and comprehensive study, built on theoretical tools from phenomenology based sociology, has been carried out. It enables us to analyse the social and cognitive logics leading the journalists in their prediction, which reveals that the anticipation of this big sports event is the result of a argued journalistic process built on three intermingled schema. The first one contextualizes the event from cases observed in the present time. The second schema identifies this event in facing other past events typically similar. The last schema interprets the Beijing Olympic Games by forecasting a likely future

Texto completoEvent is a subject rarely considered as object of research topic. Trivialized, it seems obvious. This lack of definition shows both a lack of understanding and a difficulty in tacking "social action". In sport, however, it is an object of lust decreed for its potential benefits of differentiation and considered advantages. If techniques such as sponsoring, sponsorship and public relations are pretty well known within their organizations, curiously, they have far from having revealed all their wealth in terms "communicational".The objective of this research is to identify the mechanisms of different forms of communication during sporting events. In international events, business seminars or sports (team building, incentive, gratuity, etc.), the event is at the heart of a complex relational system. As Edgar Morin points out to understand this complexity, it is necessary to change the paradigm in order to understand the meaning. The then invisible relationship requires positioning of phenomenological research, understanding and constructivism (Le Moigne). This "human fact" reads as a process of contextualisation of situational factors. Therefore, the social subject reinvents a new definition of the situation he is involved in linking various "artifacts". Also, a stream of thought in information and communication science, extending the work of the Palo Alto School (Watzlawick & coll.), is based on new methods of systems analysis and qualitative semiotic situational communications to understand the genesis of meaning shared by a group of subjects involved (Mucchielli). The results of this original research offering, in complementing the work done elsewhere (Ferrand, Tribou, etc.), to revisit a number of concepts such as persuasion, influence, change, etc. from the perspective of the subject by the notion of communication territorialized. For management as science and STAPS, these new avenues of research are part of a "praxeology" of communication for a better understanding of the action and its context (Quéré)

Texto completoSince the early 2000’s, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained a growing interest in the sport management literature. It seems clear that CSR takes very particular forms in this field. This doctoral research more specifically deals with sporting events. Sporting events appear to be influenced, like other sport organizations, by two sets of determinants (Babiak & Wolfe, 2009), namely “unique internal resources” and “strong external pressures”. This work views sporting event’s social responsibility as a “black box” which the researcher has to open in order to understand how the different stakeholders make sense of it. It therefore aims two objectives: (1) to analyze the strategic sensemaking process (Thomas, Clark & Gioia, 1993; Selsky & Parker, 2010) of two main sporting events’ stakeholders – corporate sponsors and local governments; (2) to account on how the various stakeholders influence the collective sensegiving process (Gioia & Chittipeddi, 1991; Maitlis, 2005) resulting in social responsibility actions. This research is structured around three studies. The first-two are based on semi-structured interviews with corporate sponsors (N=23) and local governments (N=23). The third is composed of four case studies combining semi-structured interviews with sporting events organizers and their main stakeholders (N=27), on-site observation and document analysis. The results identify several levels of ambiguity which mark the sensemaking processes of both stakeholder categories. Concerning corporate sponsors, these levels include positive and negative perceptions about the link between sporting events and social responsibility, perceived links between sporting events’ social responsibility and their own CSR, perceived focus of social responsibility actions as well as perceived links bewtween these actions and their strategic objectives on the event. Concerning local governments, these levels include positive and negative perceptions about sporting events’ social impacts, perceived controllability of these impacts and perceived links between sporting events, the social aspects of global sport policies as well as environmental policies. For each of these actors, combinations of the various levels of ambiguity lead to the development of social responsibility strategies during the events. Case studies show that sporting events can be placed on a continuum between “constained” and “not-constrained” sensemaking depending on the origin and intensity of sensegiving activities. Constained sensemaking occurs when organizers conform to the sense imposed by stakeholders. It seems to be associated with moral legitimacy, a low strategic level and a “do no harm” praxis. Not-constrained sensemaking occurs when organizers keep the control of the sensemaking process. It seems to be associated with pragmatic and cognitive legitimacy, a strong strategic level and a “do good” praxis
