Resumen
According to the author, psychology of religion should be the study of the personal experiences, tensions, conflicts and resolutions to conflict within a specific, clearly identified religion. The author opposes philosophical-psychological preconceptions which tend to eliminate the proper psychological reality of dynamic conflicts (as e.g. with James and Otto). With Freud, Evan-Pritchard and Needham, he affirms the historical dimension of civilizations and religions, and elaborates its consequences. He examines in this context work by Maslow on extrinsic and intrinsic religion and by Rokeach on mental-psychological dogmatism. He stresses the largely preconscious motivations and processes that are at play in the personal interests and defense mechanisms operating in the various forms of belief and unbelief and in their changes. This preconscious reality is the psychological one par excellence and is the appropriate object for subtle psychological investigations.

Resumen
Abstract The drive to decolonise is of central importance to the study of fascism, which after all was and remains a politics rooted in specific conceptions of colonialism and race. In this article, we have invited both leading academics and early career scholars to reflect on how we might ‘decolonise’ fascist studies. Their comments approach fascism in a range of contexts, and offer reflections on how to frame future research questions, approach methodological issues, and consider how fascism studies might develop a more overt and clear stance on the problems posed by decolonising the subject area more broadly. It is hoped that these commentaries will enrich the field of fascist studies and, in turn, do more to relate it to the work of scholars in other relevant areas of study, particularly those working on critical theories of race and racism. Contributors to this debate are: Leslie James, Raul Carstocea, Daniel Hedinger, Liam J. Liburd, Cathy Bergin, Benjamin Bland, Evan Smith, Jonathan Hyslop, Benjamin Zachariah, and Caroline Campbell.

Sedat Pakay, whose name will always be associated with the most intimate portrayals we have of James Baldwin, died on 20 August 2016 at his home in Claverack, NY. Sedat was born in Istanbul, Turkey, where he graduated from Robert College. He studied at the Yale School of Art under Walker Evans, Paul Strand, and Herbert Matter and became a successful photo-journalist and filmmaker. His subjects for photographic portraits included Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, Gordon Parks, and, especially, James Baldwin. Pakay’s best-known films are Walker Evans/America (2000) and, as all Baldwin scholars and friends know, James Baldwin: From Another Place, filmed in Istanbul in 1970.

Resumen
Abstract The tumor microenvironment (TME) has several characteristics that distinguish it from normal tissue, including elevated interstitial fluid pressures and hypoxia. To study the effects of TME culture conditions, commonly used target cell lines were serially passaged under hyperbaric and hypoxic conditions for a period of eight weeks. Conventionally expanded parental cell lines (normoxia) were compared against TME-acclimated tumor cell lines (TACTLs; hyperbaric and hypoxic), using RNAseq, ATACseq, and flow cytometry analysis. Commonly used target cell lines for cell therapy development were selected for TME acclimation (SKOV3, A549, JEKO1, and NALM6). TACTLs were generated using an AVATAR system, with culture conditions set at 1% O2 and 2.0 PSI, and serially passaged twice a week for a minimum of 8 weeks. Cell doubling times were measured weekly and compared against parental lines maintained under normoxic culture conditions in a conventional CO2 incubator. In-depth characterization was performed on TME-Acclimated Tumor Cell Lines (TACTLs), utilizing a multi-omic approach. Differential gene expression analysis was performed using RNAseq datasets, and surface biomarkers/targets used for cell therapy development were assessed via nanostring and flow cytometry. Growth kinetics and cell doubling times of TACTLs were initially inhibited during the first two weeks of culture under TME conditions, but eventually reached parity with their normoxia maintained parental cell lines at 6 to 8 weeks, signaling a successful adaptation of the tumor lines to low oxygen and hyperbaric conditions. RNAseq analysis revealed upregulation in glycolytic pathways and epithelial-to-mesenchymal signaling, accompanied by altered metabolic profiles. Surface target expression showed increased expression of checkpoint ligands, such as PD-L1. Cell therapy targets, such as ROR1 were also upregulated in A549 and JEKO1 cell lines passaged under TME. Preliminary drug screening experiments were conducted using checkpoint inhibitors and CAR-T candidates on TACTLs, revealing significant changes in half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) when compared to parental tumor lines maintained under normoxia. In summary, acclimation of tumor cell lines to TME culture conditions can provide unique mechanistic insights that can facilitate drug development efforts. Future studies will incorporate TACTLs for CDX tumor models with the goal of identifying cell therapies that work effectively in the tumor microenvironment. Resumen
Abstract Cell therapies, such as Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T cell therapy, have revolutionized the treatment of hematological malignancies, but their use in solid tumors remains a significant challenge for the field. This is due, in part, to immunosuppressive mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment (TME), which include reduced oxygen tension, high interstitial pressure, and an abundance of immunosuppressive proteins, resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction, exhaustion, and depletion of adoptively transferred cells. Metabolic manipulation of therapeutic cells could overcome these barriers to enable cell therapy success in solid tumors. To this end, we have employed AVATAR technology (Xcellbio, San Francisco, CA), an incubation system that enables precise control of oxygen tension and hyperbaric pressure on cells in culture to improve the manufacture of adoptive T cell therapies. Using a CD19 CAR T model system, we have shown that transduction and expansion of CAR T cells under reduced oxygen and hyperbaric pressure conditions yield greater percentages and total numbers of lentiviral-transduced cells. While cells transduced in a standard CO2 incubator yielded 10-20% CD19 CAR+ cells, transduction in the AVATAR system with increased pressure yielded 15-40% CD19 CAR+ cells. Similarly, T cell cultures performed under pressurized AVATAR conditions generated ~2X more viable cells after 10 days. Furthermore, these metabolically reprogrammed cells exhibit enhanced potency, with improved anti-tumor cytotoxic activity in vitro. We have extended these studies to measure the ability of AVATAR-expanded CD19 CAR T cells to control the growth of CD19-expressing NALM6-Luc tumor cells in vivo compared to CAR T cells grown in a conventional CO2 incubator. Mice (female NOD.Cg-Prkdcscid Il2rgtm1Wjl/SzJ, Jackson Laboratories, Bar Harbor, ME) dosed with the AVATAR-expanded cells exhibited good tumor control and increased persistence of CAR T cells in relevant organs, along with alterations in cell trafficking to the bone marrow and spleen. The transferred cells maintained a less differentiated phenotype, with central memory and effector memory populations, as measured by expression of the markers CD45RA and CD62L, dominating the T cell compartment. This work showcases the benefits of metabolic reprogramming to improve the yield and functional potency of CAR T cells, which has direct applications to reducing the cost and improving the efficacy of these lifesaving treatments. The AVATAR technology is currently being translated into a closed system bioreactor for use in GMP cell therapy manufacturing. Budd, Peter Frederick. "Changing the Gaze: A Photographic Representation of the Australian Wine Identities". Thesis, Griffith University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367468.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research project took as its premise that Australian winemakers have contributed to Australia’s modern identity yet they remain, photographically, an unrepresented sector of Australian society, indeed almost a cliché. The photographic representation and promotion of the Australian wine industry it was argued created a wine gaze, but that imagery of winemakers took a secondary role to imagery projecting the cultural and industrial significance of that industry. Thus this project argues that the graphic documentation of Australian winemakers in contemporary Australia remains deeply inadequate and mono-dimensional but came about for three primary reasons. First, like beer, wine was seen as being a part of civilised society. However, despite wine gaining international recognition in the C19th it was beer that became the national drink. Second, given the strength of moral and wowser objections to alcohol consumption from the C19th as a potential danger to the family unit, the promotion of wine consumption focused on creating a positive image. This imagery emphasises as a counterpoint the economic and industrial basis of the wine industry in popular advertising, (particularly from the 1960’s) assigning people as props to wine’s industrial or agricultural process. The third aspect, was that the evolving Australian wine gaze was strongly educative. When the winemaker was featured invariably the image was that of a person holding a glass of wine up to the viewer. This became a photographic stereotype, a wine gaze educating a largely unfamiliar public how to act appreciatively with wine, and stressed the product more than the person. These factors fashioned a lack of an interpretative, photographic document of significant Australian winemakers. Given the rise of wine culture from the 1960s and its contribution to multiculturalism in Australia this inadequate photographic representation of Australian winemakers needed to be rectified.

Crooke, Andrew. "In praise of peasants : ways of seeing the rural poor in the work of James Agee, Walker Evans, John Berger, and Jean Mohr". Diss., University of Iowa, 2013. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1576.

Texto completo
Resumen
In Praise of Peasants focuses on two sets of collaborators whose photo-textual depictions of the rural poor have been widely hailed on either side of the Atlantic but rarely discussed together. The British writer John Berger has acknowledged that the key inspiration for his projects with Swiss photographer Jean Mohr was Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941/1960) by James Agee and Walker Evans. As in that encomium to Alabama tenant farmers, Berger and Mohr straddle a line between social documentation and artistic expression in their own unclassifiable books: A Fortunate Man (1967), about a doctor's relationship with his patients in an English forest; A Seventh Man (1975), about the experience of migrant workers across Europe; and Another Way of Telling (1982), about the lives of Alpine peasants. All four of these cooperative endeavors brim with unresolved conflicts between ethics and esthetics, as well as authorial ambivalences toward rusticity and poverty. Manifold affinities in the two creative partnerships demand a transatlantic assessment that might view Agee and Evans as "unpaid agitators" for other artists and witnesses beyond an American ambit. From among the many sensitive portrayals, including Berger's Into Their Labours trilogy, that constitute a rich literature of rural poverty, these collaborative enterprises are set apart not only by their interdisciplinary nature and fierce solidarities but by the equal weight they accord to images and words. Both pairs of authors develop innovative means for conjoining photography and writing. Both worry over the effects of their pictures and text on their subjects in addition to pondering how their distinct yet coordinated mediums might affect their viewers and readers. The enduring relevance of their representational techniques and motifs emerges from a productive dialectic between witness and artistry. Agee, Evans, Berger, and Mohr ingeniously explore how an ethical responsibility to bear witness for the exploited without inflicting further exploitation is enhanced or subverted by an esthetic impulse to translate, verbally and visually, such marginalized lives into art. Their multifaceted ways of seeing the rural poor ultimately engender a means of praising their protagonists, transforming moments of witness into monuments of artistry. Following a comparative analysis of these authors' attitudes, consistencies, and contradictions over the span of their careers, I offer chapters on their likeminded works. "Abashed Ambition" scrutinizes the contest deliberately staged between intentions and performance in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men , while "A Continuous Center" examines how Agee's effusive text and Evans's austere photographs suspend instead of synthesize a pivotal tension between centripetal and centrifugal forces. "A Sense of Measure" looks at why Berger and Mohr increasingly empathize with the rural poor, and how their three ventures generate "imaginative documentaries" or "narrative dialogues" between images and words. My epilogue knits together Agee, Evans, Berger, and Mohr by concentrating on a handful of their creative peers or heirs who have been inspired or agitated by their collaborations and whose own books similarly probe the ethical jeopardies and esthetic challenges of representing rural life or poverty through both prose and pictures.

Kim, Hoyoung. "Conceptual expression and depictive opacity: Changing attitudes towards architectural drawings between 1960 and 1990". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/54363.

Texto completo
Resumen
This dissertation is a study of a remarkable change that came about in the kind of drawings that architects used to present their work between the decades of 1960 and 1990. Drawings in this period, visually rich and compositionally complex, seemed to mark an entirely new sensibility towards their function; their goal seemed to be not so much to clearly depict the forms of a proposed building, but to instead focus on its conceptual aspects. In fact, in several cases, drawings seemed to be treated as graphic projects in their own right, over and above the work they presented. This trend was accompanied by two other developments. Around the same time, there was a sudden increase in theoretical interest in drawings within the architectural community leading to a flurry of published articles, essays and books on the topic. And all this happened to coincide with the time that the Postmodern movement came to dominate architecture. The study aims to understand the relationship between these trends, and to develop a better understanding of the reasons for these changes to have occurred. It does so by, first, developing a theoretical framework to help understand the nature and impact of the changes in drawings. Next, it presents a detailed historical account of these changes. This is followed by an in-depth study of a single architect, James Stirling, to show how the new types of drawings were not simply a means to present ideas, but played a formative role in design as well. Apart from developing a contextualized historical account of an important development in contemporary architectural history, the study also finds that the change in the drawing practice and the theoretical interests were not simply an outcome of Postmodern cultural theory of the period, but were instigated by concerns that arose from within architecture itself. It thus offers a useful case-study on how changes in disciplinary practice are brought about.

Resumen
Feminist autobiography is a genre with long-standing literary and philosophical tradition, still some aspects, like, autobiography as “death writing” have come to scholarly attention as of relatively recent. The conceptual framework hinged on the concepts of “tanatography” (defined as an account of a person’s death) and “autotanatography” (defined as an account of one’s own death) makes it possible to take a fresh look into feminist writings from 19th and 20th centuries (Alice James and Simone de Beauvoir). Among the questions for the critical reflection we can mention the following ones: issues of memory and forgetting, of death of the significant other, of aging, of suicide, of literary death (ending the writing career path). Autothanatography is self-death-writing, instead of self-life-writing, even if death is an experience that cannot be had for oneself. The current article takes a look into the auto-death-writing of two women writers: Alice James (1848-1892) – a sister of William and Henry James and Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986). Although both women’s lives are set almost a century apart and none of them define herself as a feminist writer, their memoirs are written from the vantage point of imminent death. In the first case (James’s) we can speak of her posthumously published diaries, especially their second part written after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Whereas in the latter (Beauvoir’s) case the autothanatological vibe is felt throughout the whole series of her memoirs (“Memoirs of a dutiful daughter”, “The prime of life”, “Force of circumstance”, “A very easy death”), but especially in the oeuvre “All is said and done” – the writing in anticipation of one’s death. The aspect that is common to both writers is that their memoirs exhibit the strategy of recollection, of re-reading their life events anew in the wake of the end (physical and/or authorial).

Resumen
The purpose of this overview is to give a short introduction to the ideas and activities of nineteenth-century American pragmatism theory for a philosophy conference at the BEN Science Institute in Bulgaria. Pragmatism is a philosophical theory that sees thought as a tool and device for predicting, solving problems and planning action. The philosophy of pragmatism addresses the practical consequences of ideas by examining them in the light of human experience, so that the truth of a claim is determined by practical results and the utility it serves. Pragmatism began in the United States around 1870 by Charles S. Pierce. In addition to Peirce, philosophers such as William James and John Dewey who were members of the “Metaphysical Club” held at Cambridge University in the late 19th century (where the theory was formulated) helped to develop its principles. By reviewing the theory of pragmatism, we must concentrate on the Pragmatic Maxim, the rule for clarifying ideas, which for both Peirce and James, was the core of pragmatism. Another important idea in the theory is Skepticism and fallibilism. This idea claims, according to Pierce, that we should try to doubt propositions and keep them only if they are with absolutely certainty and there is no way to doubt them. The test of certainty, as Peirce points out, lies in the individual mind: trial by doubt is something each must do for himself, and the examination of our beliefs is guided by reflection on hypothetical possibilities: we cannot trust our perceptual beliefs. For example, because we cannot rule out the possibility that they were created by a dream or by evil scientists manipulating our minds. The more we try to avoid errors, the more likely we are to miss truths; And the more effort we put into searching for truths, the more likely we are to introduce errors. The doubt method may make sense in the special case where enormous weight is given to avoiding mistakes, even if it means losing truth. Once we recognize that we are making a practical decision about the relative importance of two good options, the Cartesian strategy no longer seems the only rational one. Inquiry, as already suggested, is pragmatic accounts of the normative standards to which we must act in arriving at beliefs about the world cast in terms of how we can conduct inquiries in a disciplined, self-controlled manner. That is, our ability to think about external things and constantly improve our understanding of them is based on our experience. It would be wrong to conclude that pragmatism is limited to the United States or that the only important pragmatist thinkers were Peirce, James, and Dewey. Richard Rorty has described his philosophy as “pragmatist” on several occasions - what pragmatists teach us about truth, he tells us, is that there is nothing very systematic or constructive to say about truth at all.

Resumen
This paper deals with the metaphor ‘law is language’ coined by James Boyd White and how it can be useful to understand the concept of legal language, connections between law and language and how the term language is used in the legal realm. In the beginning, the article aims to give an overview of possible approaches to legal language and continues with further analysis of one of them (the above-mentioned White’s proposition). By applying a semiotic approach to this concept, namely Saussure’s theory of distinguishing between langue (language) and parole (speaking), the paper helps to understand that language (and even legal language) can be understood in two different forms. It can be either considered an abstract system of signs, or it can be comprehended as individual speech acts – langue and parole, respectively. White’s metaphor is usually used in the meaning of texts, way of reading, writing and speaking. However, such conception corresponds to language in the sense of parole. These considerations lead at the end of the article towards the communicative theory of law and its merits to jurisprudence. According to a given doctrine, in some instances it can be more accurate to consider law as communication rather than language (and vice versa). Nevertheless, in either case, it is essential to bear in mind the distinction between both of the concepts.

Resumen
As recent as 1955, cathedrals were still unbuilt or incomplete in the young and developing dioceses of the Global South, including in Queensland, the Northern Territory and New Guinea. The lack of an adequate cathedral was considered a “reproach” over a diocese. To rectify this, the region’s Bishops sought out the best architects for the task – as earlier Bishops had before them – engaging architects trained abroad and interstate, and with connections to Australia’s renown ecclesiastical architects. They also progressed these projects remarkably fast, for cathedral building. Four significant cathedral projects were realised in Queensland during the 1960s: the completion of St James’ Church of England, Townsville (1956-60); the extension of All Souls’ Quetta Memorial Church of England, Thursday Island (1964-5); stage II of St John’s Church of England, Brisbane (1953-68); and the new St Monica’s Catholic, Cairns (1965-8). During this same era Queensland-based architects also designed new Catholic cathedrals for Darwin (1955-62) and Port Moresby (1967-69). Compared to most cathedrals elsewhere they are small, but for their communities these were sizable undertakings, representing the “successful” establishment of these dioceses and even the making of their city. However, these cathedral projects had their challenges. Redesigning, redocumenting and retendering was common as each project questioned how to adopt (or not) emergent ideas for modern cathedral design. Mid-1960s this questioning became divisive as the extension of Brisbane’s St John’s recommenced. Antagonists and the client employed theatrics and polemic words to incite national debate. However, since then these post-war cathedral projects have received limited attention within architectural historiography, even those where the first stage has been recognised. Based on interviews, archival research and fieldwork, this paper discusses these little-known post-war cathedrals projects – examining how regional tensions over tradition and modern ideas arose and played out.

Resumen
ABSTRACT Relying on computer vision, many clever things are possible in order to make the world safer and optimized on resource management, especially considering time and attention as manageable resources, once the modern world is very abundant in cameras from inside our pockets to above our heads while crossing the streets. Thus, automated solutions based on computer vision techniques to detect, react or even prevent relevant events such as robbery, car crashes and traffic jams can be accomplished and implemented for the sake of both logistical and surveillance improvements. In this paper, we present an approach for vehicles’ abnormal behaviours detection from highway footages, in which the vectorial data of the vehicles’ displacement are extracted directly from surveillance cameras footage through object detection and tracking with a deep convolutional neural network and inserted into a long-short term memory neural network for behaviour classification. The results show that the classifications of behaviours are consistent and the same principles may be applied on other trackable objects and scenarios as well.

Resumen
The occurrence of perturbations in traffic flow may lead to the formation of stop-and-go waves traveling upstream, or to traffic jams. Therefore, traffic flow stability analysis is considered to be one of the fundamental problems in traffic flow theory, and a lot of effort has been spent to analyze the formation and evolution of such traffic flow instabilities. Recent advances in the field of Vehicle Automation and Communication Systems (VACS), including the most widespread Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems, may consist a possible solution in reducing the magnitude or even eradicating the development of such traffic flow instabilities. This paper aims to perform a nonlinear stability analysis of a second-order macroscopic traffic flow model, which was recently developed by the authors for the simulation of the traffic flow of ACC-equipped vehicles, and identify the ways that ACC systems affect the stability of the flow, in relation with large traffic disturbances around the equilibrium state. Numerical simulations are additionally conducted, to validate the derived stability conditions.

Resumen
The determination of the stability of systems with time delay is of high importance in many industrial and research applications, like cutting processes, wheel shimmy, traffic jams and even in neural systems, human balancing. A user friendly numerical method was implemented to analyse the general form of delayed linear time periodic systems with time periodic coefficients. The goal is to create a freeware Matlab package which is able to determine automatically the so-called stability chart, which illustrates the parameter range for which the given linear system is stable. The user has to define the governing equation by the time periodic coefficient matrices, the corresponding time delays, the orders of time derivatives of the general coordinate vector, as well as the range of the parameters and the resolution of the stability chart. The method is optimized for 2 parameters, which is a typical case in engineering applications, but 1 and 3 parameter stability charts are also supported and tested. The stability is analysed in frequency domain based on the Nrth order approximation of Hill’s infinite determinant. The parameter points where the number of unstable Floquet multipliers changes are computed by the Multi Dimensional Bisection Method. From these parameter points, another algorithm selects the stability boundary lines. The algorithm is tested by means of numerous examples.

Resumen
This research aims to create an ergonomic emergency toilet design on car seats. This system can offer more convenience and comfort for car drivers stuck in traffic jams for hours. Background: Congestion in Jakarta is one of the few problems the government has not resolved to date. The leading cause is the amount of transportation. Reducing the use of private vehicles, such as cars or motorbikes, and the number of people in Jakarta is very anxious because traffic congestion in Jakarta and surrounding areas is worsening. Even the highways used to free us from traffic obstructing our roads because cars are everywhere. This situation can be a problem when using the toilet where the driver is stuck in traffic for hours. This method induces discomfort and causes urinary system disorders and bladder disease. Method: To design an emergency toilet system on a car seat, an ergonomic approach introduces a new design concept for car drivers and passengers. Using this toilet system, users do not need to get out of the car, but simply opening the hole cover in the seat can be used easily and more comfortably. Result: Emergency toilet on the car seat. Passengers can also use this because it is made on every seat in the car.

Resumen
Due to specific mission goals, many satellites are subject to cone constraints on the thrust direction. For example, James Webb Space Telescope, launched on December 25, 2021 toward a Halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 libration point, has a thermal shield that must prevent the telescope and other instruments from overheating [1]. Therefore, it is constrained to always keep its attitude such that the angle between the normal to the shield and the Sun direction is smaller than 53 deg. It results in conical constraints for the propulsion directions. Using chemical propulsion to perform small impulsive corrections of the trajectory or a low-thrust satellite with very specific constraints on the control does not always allow to do any desirable maneuver, as we showed in [2], where the controllability of non-ideal solar sails in orbit about a planet was investigated. In [2], we considered elliptic Keplerian orbits, and we formulated a convex optimization problem aimed at assessing whether some functions of the integrals of motion could not be decreased after one orbital period. Existence of such functions implies that there is a half-space of the neighborhood orbit's coordinates (orbital elements) where motion is locally forbidden [3]. In that paper, we strongly relied on the super-integrability of the Kepler problem. Here, we extend the methodology to infer local controllability of station-keeping satellites for any periodic orbit, regardless the dynamical system at hand. Given the projection of the nominal orbit on a surface of section, the methodology aims at verifying if a half space of such projection exists where the motion is forbidden after one orbital period. Variation of parameters is used to achieve a convex optimization problem that investigates the existence of obstructions to variations of local integrals of motion. Conical constraints are enforced by leveraging on the formalism of positive polynomials postulated by Nesterov [4], so that a finite-dimensional formulation of the convex program is achieved. Halo orbit in the CRTBP is eventually considered in the case study, but we emphasize again that the methodology is developed for a generic locally-integrable system. We compare the aforedescribed methodology with the results achieved in [5], where the authors looked at the controllability and the impact of limitations of the thrust direction on the station-keeping from a dynamical point of view. They use the Floquet Mode reference frame to describe the motion of the satellite in a close proximity to the orbit, and study the cost of station-keeping by projecting the thrust direction on the saddle plane. The minimum requirement that we propose can be used for a design of space missions around any periodic orbit for satellites that have specific constraints on the thrust directions. It can be applied to a low-thrust satellite or even those with chemical propulsion under condition of using small impulses, so that the linearization of the dynamics holds. [1] J. Resumen
Cloud Computing allows companies to scale seamlessly, providing a broad range of state-of-the-art services. Another promise is to free users from the operational and administrative burdens [1]. However, with the advent of cloud-native applications [2], this promise becomes questionable – especially when DevOps [3] principles are used during development. Experience from practice shows that teams often struggle dealing with both the infrastructure, finding the right architecture, and implementing business logic. When working in decentralized teams, things are even worse, as standardization across teams cannot be assumed. To tackle those issues, automation by means of techniques such as Infrastructure-as-code [4] help to ease to cope with infrastructural concerns. However, when working with several teams in a decentralized manner, operational overhead is still there. Organizations struggle with standardization of infrastructure code and there is no clear centralized visibility for security-related concerns within the development lifecycle. To address these issues, we propose two things: First, building up a Platform Team [5], which serves as an organizational structure for continuous delivery. A Platform Teams can be the size of a typical small DevOps Team and support the whole organization with standardized security-hardened modules. Second, an Ops-Platform is needed that is operated by the Platform Team to centrally provide and maintain those modules. Other Dev-Teams can then consume those modules. In this paper, we report insights from the implementation of this approach in practice. We find out that developers are 75% less focused on operations by using such a platform and name specific success factors. References [1] Borenstein, Nathaniel, and James Blake. Resumen
In their stormy response to Nancy MacLean’s book Democracy in Chains, some academics on the libertarian right have conducted a concerted defense of Nobel Laureate James Buchanan’s credentials as an anti-racist, or at least a non-racist. An odd component of their argument is a claim of innocence by association: the peripatetic South African economist and Mont Pelerin Society founding member William Harold Hutt was against apartheid; Buchanan was a friend and supporter of Hutt; therefore, Buchanan could not have been abetting segregationists with his support for public funding of segregationist private schools. At the core of this chain of argument is the inference that Hutt’s opposition to apartheid proves that Hutt himself was committed to racial equality. However, just as there were white supremacists who opposed slavery in the United States, we demonstrate Hutt was a white supremacist who opposed apartheid in South Africa. We document how Hutt embraced notions of black inferiority, even in The Economics of the Colour Bar, his most ferocious attack on apartheid. Whether or not innocence by association is a sound defense of anyone’s ideology or conduct, Hutt, himself, was not innocent of white supremacy.

Robert Duncan Milne (1844-99), from Cupar, Fife, was a pioneering author of science fiction stories, most of which appeared in San Francisco’s Argonaut magazine in the 1880s and ’90s. SF historian Sam Moskowitz credits Milne with being the first full-time SF writer, and his contribution to the genre is arguably greater than anyone else including Stevenson and Conan Doyle, yet it has all but disappeared into oblivion. Milne was fascinated by science. He drew on the work of Scottish physicists and inventors such as James Clark Maxwell and Alexander Graham Bell into the possibilities of electromagnetic forces and new communications media to overcome distances in space and time. Milne wrote about visual time-travelling long before H.G. Wells. He foresaw virtual ‘tele-presencing’, remote surveillance, mobile phones and worldwide satellite communications – not to mention climate change, scientific terrorism and drone warfare, cryogenics and molecular reengineering. Milne also wrote on alien life forms, artificial immortality, identity theft and personality exchange, lost worlds and the rediscovery of extinct species. ‘A New Palingenesis’, originally published in The Argonaut on July 7th 1883, and adapted in this comic, is a secular version of the resurrection myth. Mary Shelley was the first scientiser of the occult to rework the supernatural idea of reanimating the dead through the mysterious powers of electricity in Frankenstein (1818). In Milne’s story, in which Doctor S- dissolves his terminally ill wife’s body in order to bring her back to life in restored health, is a striking, further modernisation of Frankenstein, to reflect late-nineteenth century interest in electromagnetic science and spiritualism. In particular, it is a retelling of Shelley’s narrative strand about Frankenstein’s aborted attempt to shape a female mate for his creature, but also his misogynistic ambition to bypass the sexual principle in reproducing life altogether. By doing so, Milne interfused Shelley’s updating of the Promethean myth with others. ‘A New Palingenesis’ is also a version of Pygmalion and his male-ordered, wish-fulfilling desire to animate his idealised female sculpture, Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, perhaps giving a positive twist to Orpheus’s attempt to bring his corpse-bride Eurydice back from the underworld as well? With its basis in spiritualist ideas about the soul as a kind of electrical intelligence, detachable from the body but a material entity nonetheless, Doctor S- treats his wife as an ‘intelligent battery’. He is thus able to preserve her personality after death and renew her body simultaneously because that captured electrical intelligence also carries a DNA-like code for rebuilding the individual organism itself from its chemical constituents. The descriptions of the experiment and the body’s gradual re-materialisation are among Milne’s most visually impressive, anticipating the X-raylike anatomisation and reversal of Griffin’s disappearance process in Wells’s The Invisible Man (1897). In the context of the 1880s, it must have been a compelling scientisation of the paranormal, combining highly technical descriptions of the Doctor’s system of electrically linked glass coffins with ghostly imagery. It is both dramatic and highly visual, even cinematic in its descriptions, and is here brought to life in the form of a comic.
