Alhaj, Mustafa Mohamed Abdaljbar. "Colonial and Post-colonial Politics of Religion and Ethnicity : Historical Anthropology of Eastern Sudan Marginalization". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 8, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022PA080043.
This thesis analyses the long history of economic and political marginalization of Eastern Sudan and class formation in the region. The work is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Eastern Sudan from 2017 to 2021, by using qualitative techniques and methods (interviews, observations, focus group discussion). Written local sources and archival documents have also been used. From the theoretical point of view, employing Marxist and Postcolonial perspectives, the thesis tackles Foucault’s notion of “governmentality” to understand how the colonial Indirect Rule categorized native populations across religious and ethnic identities, building ideologies and practices which conditioned local socio-cultural dynamics. The thesis argues that under British Native Administration to “define” was to “empower”, and from this perspective it focuses on processes of “class formation” as a major reading key of contemporary social configurations in Eastern Sudan. The thesis also shows how the post-independence regimes undermined the colonial socio-economic and political formations in order to build new loyalties, fuelling new contradictions and conflicts among local groups. In doing so, they confirmed principles of colonial policy of religion and ethnicity and increased conflict in the region. Through an historical approach, the thesis aims to question the roots of a longstanding marginalization of Eastern Sudan, also shedding light on processes of unrest and instability in the region, that emerged since 2019 in the period that followed December Revolution
Lung, Fanny. "Ethnicité et racisme dans deux villes moyennes en France et en Espagne". Thesis, Bordeaux 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013BOR22108.
With different historical contexts and migration temporalities, France and the region of Catalogna in Spain apply relatively opposing policies concerning specificities. This PhD thesis focuses more specifically on the effects of the ethno-racialization of the European populations on the relations between people in mixed medium sized cities. In the two studied countries, we can witness a certain homogenization in the everyday practice of ethnicity of the inhabitants. The ethno-racialization contributes to the reconfiguration the urban spaces of medium-size cities, in particular through the establishment of minority centralities. But the urban areas speed up the intertwining of ethnic and racializing logics. These are spaces of self-segregation, invested by population from the Maghreb and it materializes a visible border between the groups within the city. Also subject to stigmatization and bypasses, the minority centralities have become places of ethnoracial tensions in the city. This creates urban insecurities which favours the process of ethno-racial differentiation as well as assimilating them to minorities. The stereotypes about people of Maghrebian origins are thus created through urban experience, History and the national scope, and the more global context : we can witness the common adoption of the use of ethno-racial markers, behind the rhetoric of civilizations. The fear of ethnoracial differences then justifies the normalization and banalization of racism and to escape these designations, the minorities use a numbers of strategies to surpass themselves and to resist the stigmatization
Diallo, El Hadj Mohamed Ramadan. "Ethnicité et processus démocratique en Guinée, de 1990 à 2015". Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSE3048/document.
For a good number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa – the French-speaking ones especially – the 1990s represented a transition from authoritarian regimes to democratic ones. This is the case in Guinea where a democratic process began in the mid-1980s, with the fall of the very strict regime of Ahmed Sékou Touré. In contrast to the Western liberal democracies on which it is based, the conventional democracy adopted in Guinea exists in the juridico-institutional layout but does not, in reality, function on the basis of political and social institutions that transcend the ethnic and community groups tensions. Ethnicity is the fundamental matrix. It is manifested by the hybridization of import-export institutional products with specific local realities. Public administration, political parties, socio-cultural organizations rely explicitly or implicitly on ethnicity in their relationship to politics. Several factors are at the root of this double phenomenon of ethnicization of the political fact and politicization of the ethnic fact in Guinea. One may attribute both to the fragility of the State which is struggling to ensure its sovereign missions - security, justice, well-being, etc. - and to the inadequacy of the anchoring of the values, norms and principles of liberal democracy in Guinean society. To this must be added the structuring role of ethnicity as a social group of political mobilization in collective representations

Our thesis is mainly orientated on relations between groups and the construction of identity in a situation of cultural plurality. These mechanisms are studied in a context of important social changes and deep ideological fractures. We will focus more specifically on the post Soviet societies. The fall of the political system of the former USSR led to political changes in Kazakhstan. From these changes originated a new social and ethnic organization : appointed ethnic groups (Kazakhs) and non appointed ethnic groups (others ethnic groups). This new classification led to some considerable changes in the representation of the national identity and the relations between ethnic groups. The new ideological objective of Kazakhstan was indeed to build a new nation based on the Kazakh identity. However it encountered the opposition of minority ethnic groups which encouraged the development of new identity strategies so as to react to the unification tendency of this State - Nation's model. For our study, we have chosen the centre region of Kazakhstan where cross cultural contacts are particularly important due to the presence of several ethnies. Firstly, our goal is to analyse the links between the belonging to an ethnic group and the construction of the national identity. Secondly, we will interest ourselves to the effects of identity construction on the relationships between the different ethnic groups. Considering our research objectives and the reality of the context on which was based our study, we applied a both qualitative and quantitative methodology: the questionnaire is specifically adapted to our field and the semi – directive interview explains the interethnic variabilities. Our sample is composed of 371 young people aged from 15 to 31 years old, who represent the different ethnic groups in presence (Kazakhs, Russian and others minorities ethnic groups)

Using the sociometric test devised by J. L. Moreno, we study how children from different cultural backgrounds relate to one another at primary school. In a more specific manner, we shall concentrate on the relationships between children from North African backgrounds and French children. We shall see if there is a link between the degree of openness of their families to members of foreign communities and the way the children relate to each other when it comes to choose or reject a friend from a different community. Although children are more likely to make friends within their own communities, this does not mean they systematically discriminate against the out-group. The older the children are, the more united the in-group seems to be, but groups behave differently according to their cultural backgrounds. Moreover, the size of groups within classes seems to have an effect on the way children relate to each other. The cultural openness of mind of the families tend to facilitate
Hossein, Zadeh Fahimeh. "Le nouveau mouvement ethnique en Iran contemporain : une analyse sur l'action ethnique". Paris, EHESS, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010EHES0050.
There are three actions ethnic actions naturally formed different from each other, after the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Third action, focused on political structural changes, arised after the territorial events in Afghanistan and Iraq. This action was influenced by the extent and imposed deprivation by a central and despotic government. Therefore we stumble on a fundamental question: What is the future direction of the ethnic movement in Iran? The nature of the question raised by this study, have lead us to use a synthetic method of research. These three approaches have considered in this method: historical, qualitative and quantitative. Considering the ethnic groups: Turk, Kurd, Lour, Arab, Balootch and Turkmen, this study focused on developing the ethnic action among four groups: actors, activists, pacifists and low social layers, for which the actors and activists are not available. This research has benefited from a multifactorial analysis mode. These factors were classified by three pairs of contradictory concepts: Center-Periphery, Democracy-Despotism and Official nationalism-Ethnic nationalism: which are based on an identical structure. Paradoxical way of considering the role of women and of individualism lead this movement to an inability of institutionalizing a liberty based on individual rights. In spite of this, in seems that this movement is moving more toward a democracy along with other social movements, trying to reach a common network in the ethnic movement in Iran

Based on analysis of colonial and ethnographic studies, I tried to understand in this thesis how established the classifications of African populations from racial presumptions and reifying identifications in a region of western Africa where the "mixture of races" had struck the first observers. As these synchronous representations stood out, the conquest and the colonial administration forced changes to the productivity and to the existing power, transforming the people’s collective lives and their spiritual and religious worlds. A ground study in and around Sara's village, located in the loop of Mouhoun, completes the study of the colonial papers and highlights the existence of ethnic lineages in forming social and political structure, making distinctions between the Bwaba and the "foreigners", what seems to be at the origin of a feeling ofmembership of a geographically undefined human group, in Bwamu "Bwabawa.» This study also confirms the existence of transformations which appeared during and after colonization

This doctoral work to highlight the relevance of the - atlantic cultural complex - concept, spanning the ancient and middle Bronze age, based on the analysis of funeral manifestations documented throughout Northern Spain and South-Western France. The choice to study regions which remain less visible with respect to the available documentation on the atlantic domain, as a point of reference for this research, was done in order to acknowledge their individual value and to understand the relationships between these regions and with those of the continental iberian domain. Data for the meridional atlantic zone has considerably expanded over the past thirty years, thanks to the development of preventive archaeological activities, thus enabling the contextualisation of data from past explorations. The main objective of this research is to characterise the funeral finalities and furniture used by people in this area, in order to define and delimit different cultural groups. In order to do this we used a double-scale for analysis : a micro-scale centered on Galicia and the Adour basin, and a macro-scale encompassing the central and east-central front of atlantic Iberia. The first scale allowed us to analyse the data in a very exhaustive manner, integrating brand-new data, whereas with the second scale, which is much more global and synthetic, we established a general and critical panorama of the data for the cantabrian and Basque regions of Spain. The combination of these two approaches allows us to establish a variety of comparisons on the documentation about these areas, and to identify many convergences, especially with regards to material culture that had not been addressed when constructing the Atlantic Bronze concept. This includes pottery items, as well as a certain immobilism on behalf of the atlantic regions in response to the Meseta cultures. These elements, along with funeral changes that occurred between the ancient and middle Bronze age allow us to characterise what can be considered as the common atlantic dynamics. Lastly, our database of over 260 sites, raises the question of what factors might have caused the composition of the various different cultural groups in the area, emphasizing the role played by exterior influences, local substrates and topographical obstacles
