The recentdevelopment of learning methods based on deep neural networks alsocalled "Deep Learning" has led to a significant improvement in visual representation models.and textual. In this thesis, we aim to further advance image representation and understanding.Revolving around Visual Semantic Embedding (VSE) approaches, we explore different directions: We present relevant background covering images and textual representation and existing multimodal approaches. We propose novel architectures further improving retrieval capability of VSE and we extend VSE models to novel applications and leverage embedding models to visually ground semantic concept. Finally, we delve into the learning process andin particular the loss function by learning differentiable approximation of ranking based metric

Texto completoThis thesis raises the issue of the use of infographic techniques and synthetic imagery to represent vestiges of the past, in particular archaeological and architectural heritage. Our approach is multidisciplinary. Since infographic systems belong to the category of media-related and cultural inventions that have come into existence since World War II, our study aims to be comprehensive, drawing on Art History, Archaeology, Information and Communications Technology. Our intention is to look beyond the purely technical dimension and to analyse these systems as cultural spaces of representation, within the scientific community (“specialists”) and for the general public (“neophytes”). Representation of built heritage using infographic tools has of course not sprung up spontaneously overnight, whether in the public sphere or in the more restricted sphere of the research community. Although this phenomenon is of course closely correlated with the development of the IT sector, it would be simplistic to regard it only as a consequence of this technological revolution. Indeed, changes in the media and scientific fields have gone hand in hand. The conservation of historic monuments and archaeological sites, their listing as being of public interest and management for exhibition purposes, consequently gives rise to debate and controversy in both the scientific-research and institutional spheres. More generally, these matters raise the issue of “heritage”, as much for ideological as for historical reasons. The purpose, then, of this study is to identify the social and cultural factors that have led to the emergence and development of these practices, which involve a combination of graphics, information technology and scientific research. Thus defined, the context invites us to analyse the ways in which these tools have been used and appropriated by different players in the heritage industry. Finally, we need to consider the material aspect of these images and highlight the areas of mediation which these systems create. In conclusion, it would seem that these new modes of representation exemplify a hybridisation of communication practises and codes of meaning resulting from the mixing of “scientific” and “popular” culture

Texto completoThis study is aimed to propose an analytical framework for evaluating economic policies in morocco. It is the first attempt to our knowledge for applying optimal control methods in the Moroccan case. A macroeconometric model with 24 equations is built and estimated by two-stage least squares. Its short and long run properties are analysed by compunting multipliers and elasticities. It is then simulated. Its resolution is done by using space state representation and Kalman filter process. The practicability of these techniques is illustrated for the Moroccan case and sheds light on the conduct of macroeconomic policies. Various simulations show that the monetary policy plays a more efficient role in monitoring the real economy than the fiscal one. Results prove that the joint use of optimal control and kalman filter theories can be an invaluable assistance for the macroeconomic planning of Morocco

Texto completoIn designing, the architect gives space not only a form, but also other aspects of topology, accessibility and comfort. This production is based on a set of qualitative spatial requirements (ESQL) described in the architectural programming phase. Current BIM practices are based on formats transforming all building information into essentially quantitative data, which does not allow taking into account these ESQL. In this research, we propose a new design approach that takes into account and verifies the ESQL using one of the current BIM tools (Revit). This approach is based on a new space model including and structuring the ESQL. This model is based on an identification work for the most frequently used ESQL to qualify spaces in the programming phase. Our approach is evaluated through an experimental validation process

Texto completoA variety of spaces and landscapes fascinated so much Gertrude Stein that their representations constituted a recurrent, special and important theme in her writing. However, we think that Stein’s representation of spaces deserves a specialized research not merely because it is one of the subjects which she takes upon oftenest. In fact, through her different manners of representing the space, we can observe constant changes in her conception and style of writing. This is due to the frequent mutual influence between her vision of space and her vision of literature. As a result, Stein creates often new linguistic styles and even new literary genres in order to express les characteristics of new spaces or landscapes. In this dissertation, we would like to analyze Stein’s representation of three distinct types of spaces, each of which will be associated with a specific writing method. In the following three chapters, we will study successively the representation of domestic space and the “esthetic of surface” in Tender Buttons (1912), the representation of modern American landscapes in a series of texts written from 1934 to 1938 and the notion of “human mind,” and finally the chronotope of war and the “prophetic method” in Wars I Have Seen (1946)

Texto completoWe study "ridges" with respect to their use as natural interest lines for computer vision, and for their use in object representation. As suggested by the term "interest lines", we want to generalise and to complete the concept of interest points, intensively studied and used in current research. We define a ridge point as a local directional extremum of the filtered image in scale space; we are essentailly using a Laplacian filter. Individual ridge points are connected to construct ridge lines. Such ridge lines characterise shape as a central axis, and width information. Seing lines, rides are particularly useful to represent elongated shapes, as found in a human silhouette, or a line of written text. We develop two applications to show the usefulness of ridge lines:modeling human shape, and text detection. A human silhouette is represented by "significant" ridges, corresponding to the body and the legs. This representation allows an interpretation of the body configuration at each instant in an image sequence. Ln the application to text identification, a piece of text is modeled by ridges at two different scales: a long ridge at high scale corresponds to a line, and a large number of short ridges a lower scale for the individual characters. This structural model for text applies successfully to different types of text, and allows different line geometries. The final chapter presents initial work on the use of ridges for hierarchical modeling of structured objects, and the resulting kind of matching algorithms

Texto completoIn this thesis we have studied the notion of space based on the modes of representation and semiotical concretisations in the novels of alain robbegrillet. From a topological point of view, the type such as, linear, labyrinthic, circular and ruin come back in force and design an informal deconstructed topology. The forme of these spatial statements furnish to the subject of the discourse the model of its wordings. In their relation to the spacethe caracters have a double strolling : physical and mental, real and imaginary. The places they cross become either transitory places or non-places. The novelistic grounds in robbe-grillet's novels belong to different registers. They are dream-state, mnemonic, intertextuel, intersemiotical, legendary and mythological. These heterogeneous spaces and slidings between themselves occulthe frontier between the real and imaginary. Hense they create a new postmodern and virtual space. This postmodernity annonces the ruin of the space and of the species, of the tale and of the imaginary, of the values and of the signification
Schmitt, Céline. "Aux rythmes du regard et de l'espace : Pour une approche scénopoïétique du processus de représentation". Toulouse 2, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010TOU20102.
Texto completoThe main topic of this research is to explore the influence and functions of the dimension of space in the representation process. As representation is conditioning possible ontogenesis, the aim is here to observe how people are occupying the space, how they are talking about themselves and projecting themselves in and through the space, be it the empiric or the conceptual space. Whereas it seems impossible to reach a generic concept of space it appears obvious that the relationships with the space share common features of drama in a structure that we have chosen to call the skènè/théâtron structure or the scenopoïetical dynamism. This requires broadening the concept of stage so as to capture any behaviour that puts in tension or brings about a game between visible and invisible, real and symbolic, what is in and out of the stage. Such approach needs an interdisciplinary and trans-historical view that allows highlighting the mediations and interfaces that are forming and transforming together glance and space

Texto completoThe mouth, first organ of interelations between the baby and the "mother", is charged since birth with sensory traces which shape the "sonorific matter" emitted through the motion of phonal organs. The analysis of sonoric productions and of their transformation, observed in the context of therapies of young children experiencing language difficulties, leads to maintain that those productions are at the same time agents and reliable clues of the quality of interelational games. When the interelations are adequate, oral experiences and sonorific productions, first invested as concrets objects, support the processes of harmoniztion and of sensoryaffective integration which constitute protorepresentations. However, when it is not the case, the mouth, partly devitalized, is seldom used as an experiencing space. Its lack of flexibility, of displacement, and of transeference seems to block any evocative activity

Texto completoThis work deals with a set of problems appearing at double level, thanks to the convergence of three complementary methods. Indeed in Nodier's fictions the main problem regarding the instability of the represental space comes unavoidably to the lancinating subject of the representation itself, which was weakened at the beginning of the XIXth century. The first part studies the stylistic ways used for the representation of the instable space, chiefly verbs and figures. The second part relates to the major topics of an aesthetics concerning the instable space, namely the romantic picturesque and the intertextual writing, acting agent to remove in the same time the centers of space and aesthetics. The third part analyzes the ontological presuppositions which can outdo the spatial instability by subjecting it to a transcendental order : harmony, otherworld, scale of nature. Reflecting the changes come in an age, the instability affects deeply, in Nodier's work, a writing in progress

Texto completoThe purpose of this work is to study how the transition between cameralism (the german form of mercantilism) and economic liberalism corresponds in Germany to the transition between a discourse which analyses the economic phenomenons from the political notion of territory and the liberal political economy which is founded on the "market space" concept and a reduction of the state's intervention. The analysis of the sources (i. E. Treatises of cameral sciences, of political economy, textbooks of statistics and geography) reveals a non-linear evolution. The cameralism emphasizes the notion of territory in its discourse, in order to analyse the economic processes and to set forth program aiming at the economic development of territories. In opposition to cameralism, the economic liberalism period of the 1790-1820's years sets the priority on the more abstract notion of "market space", which is the space formed by the action of market mechanisms. This market space can be analysed with the principles of Adam Smith which are universal and which abstract in consequence the political boundaries. However the liberal discourse is ambiguous because it shows between 1810 and 1820 a growing interest for the notion of territory, because of the political and economic situation of Europe during this period

Texto completoThe structuring of the political area in Burkina Faso is still characterized by the encounter, within this context, of different systems of political ideas and organisation. Consequently there are ways of specifics adaptations where traditional considerations drive to a large extent the mechanisms of the modern political game. The permanence of traditional structures playing a role in the current organisation thus show the syncretism of political ideas. In addition to this syncretism, there are other factors such as the differential gap related to the tools of political production (notably due to the unequal distribution of the culture capital giving access to these tools of political production) which represent one of the major characteristics of the political set up, that is to say the existence of an area of positioning, replacement in which power is delegated between constituents and elected people. Therefore, within the framework of delegation, a network theoretical structure begins to take shape and allows the traditional hierarchy to work generally as the expression of the political game requires a big mobilisation of the population

Texto completoThe purpose of this study consists in apprehending conditions of appearance and the function of a coherent and accurate spatial representation of the city. This research leans on the experimental method applied on place, and focuses on a molar unit of analysis, namely the man/environment system. The two entities of this system being culturally marked, we have operate experimental variation on cultural distance inside the system by comparing southern European students and sub-Saharian Africa students, preserving Paris, a city imbues of European culture, as the unique place of study. It's therefore in terms of familiarity, and particularly in terms of socio-spatial familiarity, that the results are interpreted. It proves that urban area has no meaning in itself. So the storage of socially elaborated meanings appears important for an accurate cognitive map of the city. Thus, differences observed, up to now, in cross-cultural comparaison of cognitive map can also come from the legibility of socio-spatial characteristics of the city. Besides, urban pratices favor storage and diversity of meanings. Nevertheless, their impact on accuracy of cognitive map reminds limited. Then spatial information has an instrumental function permitting to resolve daily problems of spatial order. But it also have a psychological function enable to increase the feeling of coherence by adjusting represented space with real space. Otherwise, the spatial information is not only a tool for activities, its contributes to the elaboration of a life-place. However, this psychological function is possible only if the spatial information fills previously an instrumental function, as Kaplan explains in his model of person/environment compatibility

Texto completoThis thesis is composed of a literary and iconographical study until the end of Vth century before Christ in Greece and Italy. The literary part, dealing with Greek poetry, is divided into three chapters: epic poetry, lyric poetry and drama. A special attention paid to the vocabulary used by the different authors, as shown the evolution of the notion os space and scenery in the underworld, the birth of new ideas. The iconographical study has also three chapters, the second of which, the polyglots' Nekyia in the Lesche at Delphi, is a turning point in the conception of the underworld scenery. The first chapter includes iconographical documents relative to the underworld until the beginning of the Vth century, the third one from Polygnotos to the end of the Vth century. Making up series of pictures on the same theme made it possible to establish a list of characters, objects and signs which permitted the identification of such and such a picture and to observe their chronological evolution. Literature and iconography concur in their conceptions of hades: if there is for both of them a notion of the underworld space, on the contrary, the notion of landscape remains very vague. The real space marks are the soul’s enumerated in the texts and placed side by side in the pictures, without any precise geographical concern. Only a few documents lead us inside the hades. Authors and artists mainly show its surroundings. They only deal with the boundary of the kingdom of the dead. Nevertheless, one can notice an evolution: at the beginning, the underworld setting was imagined as the opposite of the earthly world, then, through the centuries, it tends to become common place and similar to it, even to be shown in a better way

Texto completoWhile it is now aknowledged that Roman historians choose and shape theirsources, geographical descriptions and notes are still blamed. Livy is thus criticized for his lack of knowledge or neglect of geographical matter. We show that such a conception doesn't understand the writing of ancient history's conditions and motives. To understand well the purposes of the livian representation of space, we have to cut ourselves off from a strictly geographical and topographical conception and, on thenarrative level, from a vision of space as a single background. In our first part, we evidence that Livian representation of space is the result of a work of composition from annalistic and antiquarian traditions, Alexander's histories, poetic intertexts and the ''horizon d'attente'' which is built with the coming of images from the Roman conquest within the city of Rome. Representation of space has different purposes that are linked to different goals and various forms or key moment in the work'sarrangement, so that we can establish a typology. In our second part, we underlinethat the shift from a spatial type to another and the use of a specific terminologyleave to establish a discourse on Roman conquest and empire. Our third part showsthat the Ab Vrbe condita is not only a ''national'' work but also offers parts of universal history to question Roman power and its empire

Texto completoAll works note the proximity between the representation of time and the representation of space, whatever the language considered. In a comparative perspective, bearing both on indo-European - French, English, slavic languages - and non-indo-European languages - Arab, Swahili, Louo, Kikuyu, Japanese -, the goal of the present work is to examine the hypothesis that the proximity between the linguistic representation of space and that of time corresponds to a proximity between their cognitive representations. We take as our starting point the hypothesis that the representation of space precedes and constrains that of time, on the basis of common cognitive abstractions. From a wide corpus drawn from literature and bearing on French prepositions, we will propose a semantics for those prepositions on the basis of Casati and Varzi's spatial ontology. We will then confront this semantics to data drawn from English, Slavic languages, Swahili, Louo, Kikuyu, Japanese and Arab. Our conclusion is that the hypothesis according to which the cognition of space precedes and constrains that of time also explains the proximity between their linguistic representations

Texto completoSpace's representation in poetic works sttles "la quete du je" through his "centralisation". O. V. De l. Milosz represents lyric subject as exiled and in perpetual renaissance; places suggest mixed and quartered itineraries. Time is echo of space, represents movement, shiftings and places stagnation, evolution through "atopiques" places, "amorphes" places, suspension between the past and the present. L'espace concret du moi expresses topography and places's essential characteristics. L'espace interactif represents rela tionship between self and the other through gestures, desire, wordk impulse and repulsion. Fictionnel space projects "points-of-vue" of lyric subject about dreamed space, imaginary world, sensual and mystic of milosz. Textual and intertextual space transposes self's rewriting through other texts, others writers, others cultural referenc es, others symbolic aspects. Space, outlined through "face and silent distances", dimed and unveilled through horizon lines which ascend about self, expresses "strates", "palimpsestes", discontinuities and uninterrupted echos

Texto completoIn Italian writers’ texts of the second half of 20th Century, many African elements are particularly brought to light. This set of physical, human, spatial and socio-cultural constituents is textualized through a vast number of techniques which show on one hand a particular rhetoric of elsewhere expression and on the other hand that a literary discourse on Africa becomes a real opportunity to re-read and re-interpret the writers’ books. Images that are reflected in these texts show an Italian imaginary on Africa mostly characterized by primitive, mysterious and fall-oriented symbols, hence the worry to modernize the image of Africa by the writers. Therefore, Italy is finally seen through African continent. If one supposes the functionality of this discourse, one can say that the authors equally use it to dwell on the colonial past of their country, to express the tragedy of postcolonial Africa and to denounce some ills that damage the contemporary society. One has to do with an autobiographical writing that favors the construction of the authors’ individual identity as well as the collective identity of Italy, without leaving out the development of literature and cinema. On one side, a diachronic study shows that this phenomenon has considerably evolved during the Italian 20th Century, and this happens at various levels, from the epi-text to the intra-textual treatment of African space, the “pure” look of the contemporary epoch opposing itself to colonial visions of the fascist period. On the other side, a synchrony including French texts urges to set an hypothesis of a European vision of the African continent, although a look peculiar to Italy remains, concerning the singularity of the African milieu. Finally, one notices that hetero-images of Italian writers coincide with auto-images of African writers and that the interest to the other is reciprocal between the two spaces

Texto completoIn 1890, the frontier is tamed, and the face of America is transforming itself. From this date on, up to 1945, European writers take advantage of this phenomenon to rediscover America. To their astonishment, they are confronted with a highly industrialized civilization, which does not facilitate their task. This new exoticism is initially heightened by a set of preconceptions which urges them to anticipate this “new” New World and to imagine it before arriving. After this prefiguration, the culture shock occurs: the travelers at that time confirm or contradict their horizon of expectation and symbolize the New World. It is the time of sublimation. These two stages are of primary importance to better understand the vision which these well-read travellers will then impose. Finally, they put in writing a theatricalized and poetized America; an America which is, in the last analysis, not far from reality

Texto completoTo speak of the environment in a country as Lebanon seems, at first sight for most Lebanese, a bit strange. Indeed, the continuous episode of war and consequently political and economic instability in the country hinders the introduction of ecology among the citizens’ preoccupations. Nevertheless, the reasons of the Lebanese environmental crisis cannot be reduced to the war consequences. They are more complex including political management, citizen’s conscience as well as media coverage. The protection of the natural resources starts with an intellectual metamorphosis. The environmental communication imposes itself then in various ways in the public space. This research in information Sciences and Communication questions the environment representation in three important Lebanese newspapers (Annahar, Assafir and L’Orient Le Jour). How is done the mediatization of this theme ? What is the nature of the ecological stakes ? To which point does the press manage to raise in the public opinion the awareness of the danger that surrounds it ? Do the social representations of the environment transform the choice and the events treatment ? To answer this, we conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the press articles in two times: one ordinary and another troubled. Joining two disciplinary fields (Medias and environment) brings us to a double reflection. On one hand, it allows us to question the present written press role in Lebanon, and on the other, it constitutes an opportunity to understand how a newspaper works and the laws defining the information choice and construction while taking into account the polemic character of the environment

Texto completoThe subject of this thesis refers to durassian fiction, her novels of the asiatic cycle : "Un Barrage contre le Pacifique", "Le Ravissement de Lol. V Stein", "Le Vice-Consul", "L'Amant / L'Amant de la Chine du nord" and the cinematographic produce "India Song". These texts have their setting in India-China or Indian where the teller has lived during her girlhood. But this study is not a bibliographical investigation. No matter if Marguerite Duras's writings tell truth or litterary lie. We are interested about the real space's transposition in the novels ; how has M. Duras distributed every places in the fiction's spaces ? How and why has she figured child's world samehow or other ? So this thesis try to prove that the space's figuration or metaphorization in the asiatic cycle novels frequently uses the ravishing's topic. We can also call it, rape, rapture, delight, even ecstasy. All the durassian spaces are showed through these different matters being ravished or teared away. It appears that M. Duras has created a veritable rhetoric of the ravishing with her descriptions, using many figures of speech, like metaphor or a style of allegory. Seas, rivers, mountains and forests symbolise destruction, loss, ruin and failure. In this asiatic space, there's a figure, a character which makes oneself prominent : the mother. M. Duras has been affected by this woman, feme covert. How could we discover the durassian production by forgetting the great character of the mother ? It's impossible. Marguerite Duras's texts, concerning this epoch, tell the sad and pathetic story of the "mother of china" , like the teller used to say. The space's representation keep inside the disastrous, the calamitous mother's action: daming a sea, fighting against the Pacific in order to help and give rice to the chinese population and all the children which were starving in the plain. The motherly image means both cruelty and softness , love and hate. That is why the durassian writing is so complicated and doubtful. Finally this subject will induce us to understand her personal mythe, by exploring her "camera obscura" : something that becomes violent and silent, like a travel in a wild country

Texto completoThe War Plays trilogy (1983-1985) is Edward Bond’s major dramatic work and a turning point in his writing as well as a significant advance in epic theatre. It deals with the possibility of nuclear war in both a political and a social key. Its French production by Alain Françon as Pièces de guerre (1994-95) was a founding work in his career and a stand out in French contemporary theatre. The present study deals with theses two works autonomously. Part one is about writing The War Plays. After an historical look out of the nuclear holocaust menace in the mid-80s, a description of the author, his work and its place in its time, each play, Red Black and Ignorant, The Tin Can People and Great Peace is examined with the circumstances of its writing, its founds, its thematic, narrative, discursive, stylistic composition, with an emphasis on their semantic system as part of their meaning prospects. Part Two is about producing Pièces de guerre. After a description of the director and its artistic contributors, followed by a study of his previous staging of In the Company of Men, it gives an account of the intentions and meaning of this production by describing every aspect it: organisation, cast, dramaturgical study, translation, aesthetics (set, costume, lights, sounds), rehearsals, circumstances of the performances. A specific emphasis is made on the dialogue between the author and the director
Malochet-Turquety, Hélène. "La représentation de l’espace géographique dans les Métamorphoses d’Ovide". Thesis, Paris 10, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA100157.
Texto completoOvid’s Metamorphoses are written in an age of profound change. Not only does power evoluate in the hands of the Princeps, but also space: the new management of the provinciae and the reorganization of the City make it possible to conceive the geographical space of Empire as united. The poem echoes these transformations by introducing heroes who travel all over the world. The wide range of places and countries seems to match with the enormous temporal scope announced in the poem. The poem can be seen as an epos on space : space is progressively dominated, from the beginning of humanity to the reign of Rome. In each myth, Ovid selects the places, the rivers, mountains or cities he needs, abiding by mythical traditions and cultural representations : toponyms are borrowed from Homer or the Alexandrian poets ; but simultaneously he revitalizes them : he constructs his vision of geographical space and spatial organization. As early as the first cosmogony, he introduces toponyms which had been known only very recently in latin, thus opening his poem to universal geography and history. By transposing Greek myth in Roman space, the poet deals with cultural identity, in a time when Roman culture was undergoing a metamorphosis. He insists on the Greek roots of Roman culture and simultaneously projects it on a wider, universal scale. Places have a history, progressively revealed in each book. By setting myths in a web where each place has its own significance but also is better understood when related to the other, he constructs a space which is both natural and cultural, and a history of humanity and of Greco-Roman identity

Texto completoParis occupies a central place in the Patrick Modiano of novels. It's his hometown, the city of his youth and one where he spent most of his life. He remained hopelessly fascinated by it. Several novels have essential spatial framework for streets, boulevards and Parisian districts. The proper name of the French capital is the most cited in all modianiens texts. As heterogeneous as is the spatial context, he mentioned, in most stories, the Paris Maps. Modiano how he apprehends the city ? How is it described in his stories? Modiano he borrows the look of a Paris, a city that knows better than anyone that space or that of a visitor, a smuggler ? Paris is it simply a space where the protagonist lives and it describes or is there another type of representation of the city in the texts of the novelist ? How real space he turns into representation ? We believe that a geographic research is needed regarding Patrick Modiano of novels. The space contains modianien excellence by a geographical dimension that jumps to the first reading of his novels. The space, in Modiano, is first and foremost real. The French capital is actually designed by this writer, with its boulevards, intersections, avenues and neighborhoods. But this real place emerges another purely imaginary topography
Mami, Yassine.

Rennes 2, 2000. http://www.theses.fr/2000REN20016.
Texto completoThe detailed study of the paradoxes in the composition of Henri Matisse, roman is the starting point in the understanding of a work that simultaneously multiplies and mixes the reference marks of the act of reading. The idea of textual identity shall be preferred to that of unity, as it allows a more open access to the reading process and the obstacles to interpretation. The book demonstrates the ambivalence of any rigorous limitation of the textual object and of its contents and leads us to experience its dynamic heterogeneity. The reader is thus obliged to reevaluate the relevance of the traditional categories of poetics, such as genre and fiction. The analysis introduces the frame as a heuristic metaphor for the opening of the text towards what is beyond the textual domain (the visible, the world) in order to consider Aragon'swork as a reeducation of the eye and the application of the " Lesson of Matisse " to reading. This leads to a redefinition ot the " real " within the book and to a deepened understanding of the writer's conception of " realism ". The book calls for a phenomenological reading of a space where presentation and representation are interdependent. The hermeneutic process of Henri Matisse, roman accompanies the creation of a book-space where a " critical relationship " is established (between reading and seeing, between the painter and the poet) that attempts to create the common ground between " sign producers "
