Texto completoThis Master’s Thesis describes teachers’ perceptions on social integration and its supporting of pupils in intensified or special support in the Finnish school system. Due to the integration and inclusion become more general in mainstream shools, the groups of pupils have become more heterogeneous. Such an integration and inclusion can follow a variety of challenges for teachers’ work. Certainly one of those challenges is succeeding of social integration. The key criteria for inclusion is the success of social integration and therefore the topic of this research is current and important. Previous studies have found that students with disabilities and in need of assistance are socially in a weak position when comparing to typically developed children. The theoretical framework of this study examines the Finnish special educational system and its current state. In order to understand social integration the substance of a school class, peer relationships, formation of social status, social and socio-emotional competence are analysed within the theoretical framework. In addition earlier studies on social inclusion of students with special educational needs are presented. This study was accomplished as a qualitative, phenomenographic study in autumn 2015. The survey was carried out through three interviews and three essays of techers working in different positions in different working environments. The analysis of the collected data was performed through four-step phenomenographic analysis method. The results show that the challenges of social integration and its reasons appear to teachers as case-by-case basis. From the point of view of the class level the social integration was seen as a challenge both with interaction and peer relations. In addition the results showed positive perceptions of peer relations and their role in child’s development. The social integration was seen as a challenge, however, the teachers who were working in an inclusive school had positive experiences. The challenges of social integration were mainly explained by child’s personality, by socio-emotional competence but also by the factors that have led in the need of support. There were also causes that follow from the group of students and environment. In order to support the challenges of social integration teachers have used different participatory methods for the whole class as well as some socio-cognitive skills teaching methods. In addition so called attitude education and engouragement of participating social situations in daily basis were mentioned. Also peer support were seen as relevant. The results are describing the diversity of teachers’ perceptions and therefore should not be generalized
