This thesis proposes an approach to supply base management that relies on differentiation between categories of suppliers. The objective of this thesis is to illustrate, through a real company's example, how profitability analysis can be combined with more typical supply base management approaches to improve a company's bottom line. The central innovation in the proposed approach is the use of an indication of suppliers' impact on company profits to segment the supply base. Previous work on supplier segmentation uses factors such as amount spent at the supplier and the importance of the purchased products to distinguish between suppliers. This thesis builds upon those approaches by adding an analysis of the profit contribution from the supplier and the cost of managing the supplier. Suppliers that cost a lot to manage and contribute little profit require improvement or become targets for supply base reduction. Suppliers that work to reduce the customer's cost of managing them and contribute positively to the customer's bottom line deserve reinforcement and stand as examples for the rest of the supply base. The approach proposed in this thesis provides managers with a tool to evaluate and improve the profitability and performance of their supply base.

As companies outsource more manufacturing and design responsibilities to external vendors and therefore become less vertically integrated, the role of supply chain management becomes increasingly complex. Its role is particularly difficult when product generation follows a serial process flow, with the supply chain function residing at the end and where it inherits poorly defined supplier relationships. A more integrated approach that seeks to proactively design the supply chain during product generation is required. Central to this integrated approach is the timely exchange of information both within the company, between R&D and procurement, and external to the company, between procurement and its suppliers. The timing of the information flow is crucial. It needs to occur before the company is locked into a single supplier and when its bargaining power is the highest. It also needs to occur in a manner that does not slow down the product development process. In practice, that means that specific information needs to be exchanged and committed to prior to supplier selection. Ultimately, the information exchange described in this thesis leads to improved supplier relations that enable the company to shift its procurement practices from the tactical approach of buying materials to the strategic approach of buying supply services. The research for this thesis was conducted at a partner company of the Leaders for Manufacturing (LFM) program. The company manufactures test equipment used in the semiconductor industry. Due to the highly cyclical and unpredictable nature of this industry, supply chains that can guarantee responsiveness and availability are desirable. The supply chain design recommendations proposed in this thesis are based on an analysis of a recent product generation program at the company. By continuing to implement these recommendations, the company should benefit from shorter product development cycle times, smoother production ramps, improved customer service levels and lower sourcing costs.

Texto completoPersonal electric vehicles (EV) is an emerging technology that has gained much momentum in several markets during the past decade, and China is currently one of the markets where the growth in EV sales is the highest. Since the industry is still in its infancy, there are currently no clear structures regarding the relationships between different actors that apply to all markets globally, leading to great uncertainty in strategic decisions. The commissioner of this study is Hong Kong EV Power Ltd. (EV Power), a producer of EV supply equipment (EVSE) and related services in Hong Kong, which aspires to enter the Chinese mainland in the near future. However, EV Power has yet to decide which city they want to target first. This thesis aims to formulate a model that can be used to evaluate and compare geographic markets for a market entry by an EVSE company. Furthermore, the model is tested on three cities in Mainland China (Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen), in order to derive the most attractive city for EV Power and to evaluate the adequacy of the model. Lastly, with the results from the city evaluation, as a point of departure, success factors for an entry into Mainland China by the commissioning company will be summarized. In order to achieve this objective, four distinct data collection methods have been used: First, theory was studied, in order to gain background knowledge as well as to understand specific factors that impact a market entry decision such as this. Second, EV Power’s current business in Hong Kong was observed, with a view to achieve an understanding of what has led the company to experience success in its home market. Third, Interviews with industry experts were conducted, so as to get a perspective on the industry as a whole. Fourth and last, secondary data for the different cities was collected, for the sake of evaluating them according to the developed model. The final model consists of five main factors that encompass the elements that influence a cities level of attractiveness for entry by an EV charging station supplier. The identified factors are: ‘Market accessibility’, ‘Short-term demand’, ‘Expected market share’, ‘Profit margin’, and ‘Long-term product potential’. These factors are in turn divided into sub factors that have their own set of drivers. Using the model to evaluate the cities, it was found that Shanghai is the most suitable city for a market entry by EV Power, mainly due to its dominance in the market for private EVs and a favourable regulatory environment. Finally, three main success factors, for such a market entry, were found: ‘Focus on services’, ‘Maintain partner relationships’, and ‘Enter early’.

The Capital Equipment Procurement group of Intel Corporation is responsible for developing and procuring the semiconductor processing capital equipment that is used throughout all of the company's development and manufacturing facilities. The semiconductor industry is faced with rapid technology change, increase in the complexity of the manufacturing process, and high cost of capital. In this challenging environment, the group is concerned with the following two issues required to maintain their leadership position in the industry. First is the need to evaluate risk earlier in the capital equipment specification and development cycle to ensure that the semiconductor processing capital equipment is developed on schedule (on-line, on-time) at an affordable cost. A previous model developed and used in the manufacturing readiness phase of process development serves as the basis for a new risk assessment approach. Modifications, including new risk categories, criteria, and processes enable the new model to be applied earlier, in the technology development phase. Second is the need for a more accurate cost model to capture the costs of new processes that employ equipment from existing processes at Intel. As Intel faces increasing cost pressure on some of the new commodity products it is developing, it must increase equipment reuse in its new process designs. A target costing model is developed that first sets target and baseline costs, and then tracks progress from the baseline cost until the target cost is achieved. This model is used to closely manage various cost reduction programs or projects being undertaken in its process development organization. The overall theme of this thesis is to demonstrate how these two program management systems can be used to manage
(cont.) the development of new manufacturing equipment such as needed in the semiconductor and other capital intensive industries.

As the development of Semiconductor industry as well as the changes of indus-trial demands move fast, the service supply chain has become increasingly important in several perspectives. To be a successful equipment supplier in the industry, it would be the key to manage service supply chain by finding the right balance between supply chain investments and customer satisfaction. Managing the supply chain with global perspective has been significantly focused in the past years in the industry. While “Fast” and “Cost effective” were the key factors of success in managing supply chains in 1990s, Dr. Hau L. Lee, the director of the “Stanford Institute for Innovations in Developing Economies” and the “Global Supply Chain Manage-ment Forum” has published a journal paper with subject of “the Triple A Supply chain” in 2004, given the industry to redirect their focus in managing the supply chain by implementing the core principle of it in order to attain its ultimate suffi-ciency. In addition to this theory, the “HP Desktop Printer Supply Chain”, a well-known literature published by Stanford reviewed in 2004 also advised a key suc-cess factor, the “Postponement strategy” that was implemented by HP which assisted the company to reorganize their Vancouver and global supply chain, and to succeed. In the extended study, the “Case study of Postponement in the supply chain”, a thesis for Master of Science in transportation at Massachusetts Institute of Technology made by Susan M. Rietze in June 2006, helps us to better understand the theory of “Postponement” and its adequate applications in the industries,. These three important literatures are good enough for those who are working in the industry to take as a model of their service supply chain reengi-neering. Real case studies on two top-5 Semiconductor Inspection and Metrology Equipment Suppliers (Company K &; Company R) are prepared to observe how they made improvement/reengineering to their service supply chains as well as the ways they developed the strategies, setting up their benchmarks and targeted metrics to transforming service supply chain management from a source of cus-tomer dissatisfaction into a competitive differentiator to the industry.

The semiconductor equipment spare parts supply chain has highly uncertain demand and supply. Its characteristic is quite different from that of electronics and IT product supply chains more commonly found in Taiwan. It must provide high level of responsiveness in order to satisfy its customer needs. However, responsiveness comes at a cost. Should the cost for achieving highly responsive supply chain become too high, the company's competitiveness will be impacted. Is it possible for the semiconductor equipment supplier to lower the cost in the supply chain while maintaining or even increasing its high level of responsiveness? Is there a systematic approach to achieve such goal? This research used case study method in an attempt to discover the answers to the fore-mentioned questions. The company in this case study is a leading supplier of wafer fabrication equipment to worldwide semiconductor industry. To support the competitive strategy of its equipment products, its supply chain strategy must ensure high level of responsiveness in its spare parts supply chain. However, the supply chain performance started to degrade at the end of 20th centuryoincreased cost of sales, high level of inventory with low inventory turn and unstable service level performance. From 2000 through 2003, the company implemented multiple initiatives in an effort to improve its supply chain’s performance. This research utilized “Supply Chain Decision-Making Framework” proposed by Chopra & Meindl [1] to analyze the supply chain problems and initiatives in this case, in order to validate the applicability of this framework. A quantitative analysis was conducted on 2004~2006 data after the initiatives were implemented. It showed significant improvements in both cost and responsiveness: 1.Reduced cost of sales: 64% of revenue in 2003 to 53% in 2006 2.Reduced inventory: US$644 millions in 2002 to US$383 millions in 2005 3.Improved inventory turn: 1.2 in 2002 to 2.0 in 2005 4.Improved service level: unstable performance in 1999~2001 to 97%~99% in 2003 and afterwards, significantly exceeding the commitment of 92%. The successful application of “supply chain macro processes” and “supply chain performance drivers” in the analysis of this case proved the validity of the research framework. Finally, three recommendations were proposedothe expansion of supply chain decision-making framework, the application of the initiatives discussed in this case to other industries and suggestion for further study.

Abstract People makes mistakes, either the poor quality product might be created occasionally from a factory or a service failure was probably provided to customers, those defects caused customer’s negative impression on a firm as well to a brand. However a good recovery can turn customer’s angry, frustration into loyalty, so as to create a better goodwill, since a well-executed service recovery is important for enhancing customer satisfaction, building customer relationships, and preventing customer defections (Fornell and Wernerfelt, 1987). An importance as a brand in the market of industrial equipments, that is never inferior to the general market of consuming products. Customer makes up purchased decision depending upon their existing impression on a brand; therefore firm should establish a brand awareness with peace of mind and trustworthy by implementation of appropriate marketing strategy, Superior marketing must be Relevant, Distinctive, Consistent, Cohesive and Creative, and this leads to superior customer awareness, preference and buying action (Webster and Keller, 2004). Particularly to the industrial equipment suppliers, who is limited by their insufficient budget and resources to implement the Ad. via public media, due to the tiny revenue and capital scale. For getting rid of such a predicament, this study explored several practical operation strategies which could recover a suffered multinational brand from her stalemate by negative customer impression, consequently strengthen her market position and proceed to increase the market share. These strategies are: Innovative product improvements, Extend warranty programs, Praise from customers, Marketing activities on communication and Commitment from employees, As a result of this study, 204 respondents’ questionnaire data were examined and analyzed by employing the statistic tool, those proposed strategies were hypothesized to be tested, confirmed and harvested with their positive and effective results when they were integrated implementation. These have concluded a consolidate resolution that could be referred and adopted by the multinational equipment manufacturer’s marketer, help them to handle a recovered program while any defected circumstance or create a structure that have well preparation for crisis management.

Vertical specialization is gradually supplanting vertical integration in production orientation of global semiconductor industry. Confronting the change of industrial trend, IDM companies adopt new production strategy with directly outsourcing the product to the professional factory by consigning productive tester machine for reducing the investment costs to enhance competitiveness and long-term alliance. Even fabless IC design houses also follow the same model to keep the business relation strategically. This research, focusing on the domestic IC design houses and IDM companies, intends to establish the criterion of vender selection with mode of tester consigning and to find out the selection method of IC test factories. This research is trying to establish the vender selection criterions and find out the weighted point of each criterion by Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The purpose of the research is to set up a testing vender selection rating system based on consignment applied to IC design houses and IDM companies. Accordingly, the methodology proposed in this article is able to help to impartially chooses suitable venders objectively for long-term strategically alliance relationships.

Semiconductor industry is the most popular and important industry in Taiwan. All these industry are actively introduce new produce process to reduce components size and increase production speed, also hope to find suitable new materials, but in order to suitable for this new process, Semiconductor industry must investment new equipment to fit for this process, therefore, how to improve semiconductor produce equipments ability and suitable for next generation semiconductor produce process develop become the most important factor in this industry. The semiconductor manufacturers to introduce new equipment for the selection process are in a passive state, Semiconductor manufacturers are often lack of rigorous consideration and surfaced from the bottleneck process, in order to ensure their position in the semiconductor industry, manufacturing business is bound to not just passively waiting for equipment suppliers of the solution or a new machine, but should take the initiative to actively participate in the development of equipment specifications for new machines and production technology research and development. In addition, equipment suppliers and semiconductor manufacturers installed period from the relationship, out of warranty to the warranty period, regardless of equipment maintenance, or replacement of parts, manufacturing equipment, manufacturers must maintain close cooperation and collaboration. This research hopes to record the current literature in the selection of equipment for semiconductor manufacturers. Each manufacture may consider the factors or characteristics and through multi-criteria decision analysis methods to identify the key factors of technology. This research result shows the present semiconductor manufacturing providers to assess the co-operation as a reference for equipment manufacturers; also show equipment manufacturers sell itself as the focus of the review or improvement projects. Through the collation of the results of the literature, this paper will assess the semiconductor manufacturer equipment manufacturer''s evaluation criteria are divided into four main factors: production management, business management, development and future operating conditions in their appropriate given the extent permitted by the score; AHP (analytic hierarchy process, AHP) assessment criteria relative to the whole weight between: the ideal solution to a similar degree of the final order of method (technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution, TOPSIS) to be sorted to create a semiconductor equipment suppliers selection model, and examples of model feasibility. Under the environment of global competition, One of the most important aspects of the manufacturing process is the management of the supply chain, Corporation in order to costdown and increase the profit of the product, they select the most competitive supplier in the whole supply chain. The quality requirements also extend to the whole supply chain performance. Top in customer satisfaction, business through the message, resource exchange and integration between suppliers and production manufacturer, will be created in response to a comprehensive quality management as the supplier for the partnership, and supply chain management philosophy is to construct highest customer value, and at the same time improve the overall supply chain performance. The Quality Function Deployment for foundation (QFD), combined with Kano model, Fuzzy Kano model and the importance degree - Performance Analysis (IPA), in considering the premise of the competitors, as a supplier of recommendations put forward eight architecture feedback mechanisms. Kano model is based on traditional classification based on the plural to do, but this study considers people's feelings cannot be cut, the scale cannot fully express the way the human mode of thinking and feeling fuzzy and not certainty, it is fuzzy plural instead of the singular include more appropriate for people thinking mode and feel characteristics, this study, the broadcast equipment industry personnel fuzzy Kano questionnaire survey, respectively statistics of individual vendor evaluation indicators of the degree of membership use the addition principle as well as the concept of fuzzy mode classification. This study Saaty BOCR breakdown of the four dimensions nine criteria thirty-eight of supplier selection evaluation indicators based on Kano model, and IPA analysis concluded, different evaluation indicators were selected to construct the eight the different purposes QFD architecture. Supply chain system gradually from the past production and price-oriented, customer service-oriented, so the largest value-added supply chain is through service to improve the relationship of trust between the two sides, this study attempts to broadcast equipment industry, for example, for its suppliers effective suggestions and feedback, in order to develop a more long-term and mutually beneficial and cooperative relations.

The equipment industry is the basis of all industries. The capital investment of the semiconductor accounts for 17~24% of the gross product which it created. Every advanced country regards the equipment industry as a necessity for the development of the semiconductor industry. Governments support this industry with their policy, which guides the development of the semiconductor market and the key technique in order to acquire the competitive advantage as well as the leading position of this industry. This target of the research is the global top 15 semiconductor equipment suppliers, gathering the financial information of each supplier from 2002 to 2006. The evaluation index is based on the following factors: size, growth, profit, efficiency and risk. The grey relation model of multiple objective decision-making is harnessed to do the analysis and prioritize with a view to comparing the competitiveness among the suppliers. The objective Grey Relation Model analysis reveals the niche of semiconductor industry is transnational organization, harnessing diversification operating strategies to enlarge revenue, fight for higher market share, and beef up competitiveness. Without a doubt, professional leading brands as well as relentless R&D are nothing but the approach to generating high margins and maintaining competitive edges. In terms of research and development, the U.S. is still dominating the development of key techniques in the field of semiconductor industry and holding the leading position. Given management strategies, American corporations put emphasis on margins, growing revenue and risk control. Instead, Japanese tend to expand its shares through stable and steady management.

Texto completoThere are two process operations in the sugar factory that directly affect the recovery of sugar from evaporated syrup, namely crystallisation (boiling) and centrifugal operation. Successful automation of the vacuum pans (boiling) has been implemented using brix (total dissolved solids) control, but to date on-line measurement of continuous centrifugal performance has not been successfully accomplished in South Africa. The purpose of this investigation was to continue the preliminary work performed by Tongaat Hulett Sugar in developing a purity meter for the measurement of sugar purity (sucrose content) in a continuous centrifugal. This instrument would provide the centrifugal operator with a reliable tool to perform on-line measurement of sugar purity and would also facilitate the automation of the centrifugal
