Resumen
Abstract This book contains a series of chapters reviewing the current scientific knowledge on RNAi, methods for developing RNAi systems in transgenic plants and a range of applications for crop improvement, crop production and crop protection. Some chapters examine both endogenous systems in transgenic plants and exogenous systems where interfering RNAs are applied to target plants, pests and pathogens. The biosafety of these different systems is examined and methods for risk assessment for food, feed and environmental safety are discussed. Finally, aspects of the regulation of technologies exploiting RNAi and the socioeconomic impacts of RNAi technologies are discussed.

Resumen
The majority of emerging pathogens has an environmental origin. These pathogens are increasing in incidence and geographic distribution. Because of the continuous worldwide population growth, and global changes, the emergence of pathogens will continue to intensify, particularly in tropical areas where demographic growth is uncontrolled and socioeconomic and environmental changes rapid. Using a set of case studies, we look at the role of biodiversity alteration on zoonoses emergence and transmission routes, as well as the existing links between climate variability and pathogen emergence. Pathogen emergence and transmission are closely associated with habitat alterations and vector or host-species changes. Because of environmental changes, pathogens that were previously in a dynamic equilibrium, with local host communities in a pristine habitat, without human contact, are now redistributed locally, and over long distances, owing to increasing global pathways. Thus, we aim to characterize the environmental determinants of pathogen transmission in the tropics.

Resumen
Arthropods transmit a variety of diseases to humans and animals, including arboviruses, bacteria and parasites. No efficient treatments or control methods are available for many vector-borne diseases, especially for emerging diseases. Therefore, the development of alternative strategies aiming at controlling disease transmission is encouraged worldwide. Although transmission phenomenon is a result of complex interactions involving several actors evolving in a changing environment, the biotic relationship between pathogens and their vectors represents a key step in successful disease transmission. Recent studies highlighted a strong impact of microbiomes on the life-history traits of arthropod hosts. This chapter emphasizes those biotic interactions having an impact on adaptive traits influencing disease transmission. Evidence in behavioral alterations of vector populations/individuals with relevance to vector-pathogen transmission mitigation is reviewed. Opportunities to take advantage of such biotic processes in the control of vector-borne diseases in different epidemiological, entomological and environmental settings are explored.
