Resumen
Despite generational stereotypes, young adults have always faced challenges upon transitioning from college into the workforce, with prolonged job searches, early career adjustments, and testing different jobs. Further, the current generation of young adults has been branded as narcissistic, while it has also been anointed as a hero generation, dedicated to the greater good. Reconciling these two perspectives is not easy. Still, young adults can flourish in their early careers, but they approach these years differently than their elders. Centrality of work, person-environment fit, and organizational socialization shed light on how young adults can make healthy transitions to work. Best advice to young adults: find a mentor.

Paludi, Michele, ed. The Psychology of Women at Work. Praeger, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216983200.

Texto completo
Resumen
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women made up 46.4 percent of the civilian labor force in 2005, and that percentage is expected to reach 47 percent by 2014. Professional and health-related occupations are the fastest-growing roles for women, with computer-related, environmental, and educational fields also drawing increasingly on the female workforce. The bottom line at a macro level is that, more and more, women are driving the country's economic development. But with that phenomenon come questions, challenges, and concerns, on many diverse levels. Debates rage on psychological topics such as the effect the increasing number of women at work has on marriage and divorce, family and children, women's identities and stress levels and, overall, their physical and mental health. Psychologist Michele A. Paludi and her team of experts from across fields examine all aspects of women at work - the pros and cons, how it is changing American society, its women, their relationships, partners, and children. The factors that fuel women achievers are also discussed by female scholars and experts in the field, who illustrate points with vignettes and their own career development stories. Issues in the workplace affecting women's wellbeing are also discussed, including sexual harassment and related laws, pregnancy-related work policy and regulations, challenges for women bosses and career moms, the glass ceiling, racism, women's relationships with male coworkers, and issues that rise when a woman is the breadwinner. This unique and timely set will appeal to those who are interested in psychology, women's studies, education, law, business, and public policy.

Burns, Mick, Colin Campbell y Jackie Craissati. The Offender Personality Disorder pathway: Modelling collaborative commissioning in the NHS and criminal justice system. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198791874.003.0007.

Texto completo
Resumen
The complex process by which the current Offender Personality Disorder pathway came into existence and the importance of joint operations, both co-commissioning and co-delivery, are explored in this chapter. The importance of providing system leadership and the difficulty inherent in holding together a complex network of service provision in two parallel systems while maintaining effective service delivery is explored. A brief overview of the evolution of commissioning in both health and justice settings is given, as well as a description of ‘co-commissioning’ and the tensions and benefits evident in this unique approach. The importance of collaboration and working towards identified outcomes from a set of agreed strategic principles is emphasized, along with the importance of relationships and the impact the approach has on workforce and environments across the pathway.

Livermore, Michael A. y Richard L. Revesz. Reviving Rationality. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197539446.001.0001.

Texto completo
Resumen
Reviving Rationality: Saving Cost-Benefit Analysis for the Sake of the Environment and Our Health explains how Donald Trump destabilized the decades-long bipartisan consensus that federal agencies must base their decisions on evidence, expertise, and analysis. Administrative agencies are charged by law with protecting values like stable financial markets and clean air. Their decisions often have profound consequences, affecting everything from the safety of workplaces to access to the dream of home ownership. Under the Trump administration, agencies have been hampered in their ability to advance these missions by the conflicting ideological whims of a changing cast of political appointees and overwhelming pressure from well-connected interest groups. Inconvenient evidence has been ignored, experts have been sidelined, and analysis has been used to obscure facts rather than inform the public. The results are grim: incoherent policy, social division, defeats in court, a demoralized federal workforce, and a loss of faith in government’s ability to respond to pressing problems. This experiment in abandoning the norms of good governance has been a disaster. Reviving Rationality explains how and why our government has abandoned rationality in recent years, and why it is so important for future administrations to restore rigorous and even-handed cost-benefit analysis if we are to return to a policymaking approach that effectively tackles the most pressing problems of our era.
