Wang, Fangfang. "Le port de Shanghai, porte maritime de la Chine, 1843-1912". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023SORUL054.
Texto completoThis thesis focuses on the development of the Shanghai port from 1843 to 1912, with a particular emphasis on the history of foreign enterprises established in Shanghai during this period. At a time when China is promoting its Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at expanding its global influence by assisting participating countries in developing their public infrastructure, including ports, it is interesting to reexamine the history of the development of the Shanghai port during the concession period. The foreign concessions in Shanghai and the private enterprises established there between 1843 and 1912 played a crucial role in the construction of the port, which later became a development model for other Chinese port cities. The city of Shanghai as we know it today has its foundations in this period. This thesis seeks to demonstrate how the commercial competition among foreign enterprises in Shanghai drove the development of its port. It explores the historical context, key stages of port construction, planning and management, as well as Western imperialism and the emergence of Chinese national consciousness

Texto completoThe implantation of the foreign enterprises, in morocco, is the product of the far way moroccan economic integration in the market of the world. It has been seen as the fundamentel instrument for economic developpment and modernisation. By this strategy, a lot of enterprises came to morocco during the protectotrat period, especially from france. The rhythm of their implatation was slow and limited before the end of the second world war ; however, after the war it became faster because the conditions have been favorable : it was the glorieus period of the colonial economy. Since the polical independence of morocco in 1956, the weight of the foreign enterprises in the moroccan economy has changed. A lot of measures have been adopted by the moroccan governments inorder to help moroccan investors, without really disturbing foreign ones. The results of this policy are limited, even though the participation of the moroccan capital is increasing and the foreign capital is decreasing. Some foreign great groups are still keeping an important position in the moroccan economy : the control of the technology belongs to them, since they have a knowledge of the management. Yet, this policy must not be under-estimated because it has contributed to the formation of the upper moroccan class. Thus, many investments are realized, gathering moroccan and foreign capitals

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis is to assist french local economic development bodies in improving their efforts of attracting inward investment. It is based on the analysis of the site selection processes of foreign manufacturing companies locating a new factory in france. The first part studies the role of foreing companies in local economic development. Based on a critical analysis of the traditional approaches, it develops a model of the site selection process of manufacturing companies locating a new production facility abroad. The second part presents the field study aimed at testing the viability of the model and studying the action of local foreign investment promotion bodies. This part comprises on the one hand the analysis of five site location projects of foreing manufacturing companies in france, and, on the other, the analysis of the inward investment promotion efforts of seven french local economic development bodies, using, as a starting point, the alsace region. The third part compares the results of both companies and local economic development organisations and draws the main conclusions. It studies the process of developing a strategy aimed at attracting inward investment and finally presents the ten commandments of inward investment promotion

Texto completoIn this thesis, titled « Objectives ans difficulties of local partner cooperating with foreign multinational corporations – the case of Vietnam », we focus on strategic alliances in Vietnam, from the local partner‘s point of view. We used both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative methods were used to analyze 22 interviews that we had with managers of Vietnamese firms, while quantitative methods were used to process 98 responses to our questionnaire (informants were managers of Vietnamese side in strategic alliances in Vietnam). We revealed Vietnamese partners’principal objectives and difficulties as they cooperate with foreign multinational corporations. We also analysed the incidence of some factors affecting alliance’s performance. This helped us to point out the success factors for strategic alliances in Vietnam. Our research may thus be useful not only for Vietnamese enterprises and foreing multinational corporations, but also for local policy makers int the country’s process of reform

Texto completoThe territorial attractiveness of states is at the center of national and international. Derogatory tax measures designed to attract foreign investments are numerous and complex, not only because international influence, but also hesitations and the accumulation of national rules. In Gabon and France, territorial attraction tax incentives have been educated in key activity areas of the economy. They thus participate industrialization of these countries. However, beyond industrialization, these derogations aim to develop certain areas of the territory, and especially to combat unemployment. Nevertheless, far from always achieving the expected results, these measures end up sometimes, over the years and successive modifications to become more complex, making them unreadable

Texto completoBeing aware of its technological delay and its poverty, confronting the regional economic growth, china was constrained to open its doors to the countries with market economic system. The final objective of "reforms" can be resumed in some words: to construct a modern and efficient industry (priority given to light industry). But this modernization sues collective values and create cultural problems, as well as complications concerning business affairs with foreign partners. We have analyzed, in this research, all possible obstacles raised up from reforms, as well as ones lived by foreign joint-ventures in China. Through detailed analysis and some examples carried on strategies applied by foreign partners, we could demonstrate that economic progress cannot be produced until all factors (population, social, economic, legal and politic institutions) become favorable to progress. Therefor China needs more time to teach to its people this new education and these new values

Texto completoThis thesis examines the dynamics of employments relations in state-owned enterprises in China based on monographs produced in the Shanghai branches of two companies. In particular, it is intended to discuss the impact of transformations in the public sector from reforms in the 1980s. These reforms led to truly distinguish the interests of labor from those of management. In this sense, they paved the way for the emergence of a system of employments relations. This thesis focuses on the analysis of human resource policies in these companies, which were marked by increasing independence from the public authorities, the changing role of the union in this context, and the collective action of workers in the context of restructuring and uncertainty about the future of the company

Texto completoGlobalization made the borders porous between the states which have to adjust themselves to a new economic reality. Thus, internationally oriented companies now have endless opportunities but are also faced with tax systems that sometimes converge and sometimes differ. Even in the European Union, the process of harmonization of laws does not lead to a common tax system. Faced with this imbroglio of rules and diversity of tax systems, companies, often far from being lead by nationalist feeling, start looking for the fiscal lowest bidder. Taxation becomes a major challenge for States that have to lay down rules which are sufficiently clear in order to respect the principle of legal certainty, to be competitive enough to attract capitals and repressive enough to eradicate fraud. However, the tightening of fiscal prerogatives, guided by the perpetual search of public revenues as well as by moral concerns of justice and equality regarding taxation, should not inevitably result into the denial of rights and guarantees of taxpayers. The eternal challenge is to find the appropriate balance between the interests of all parties involved

Texto completoChina initiated its reform process in 1978. While maintaining the overall framework of predominant public ownership, china adopted a policy of opening up trade and investment links with the rest of the world. China has unquastionably made considerable progress in reforming its economy but china's economy is still prone to sharp ups and downs. Human rights abuses, political uncertainties, a get rich - quick mentality, corruption, the lack of legal procedures. . . , all these and more raise caution and great obstacles for foreign businesses. How far china would go with its "open up" strategy and what are the implications for the futur investment strategy?

Texto completoThis thesis support the idea according to the International Human Resources Management (IHRM) encompass group of measures which support decentralization and control of foreign activities, in the context of globalization of businesses. This work describes and analyses mechanisms of control by IHRM nowadays unfolded by French multinational, to integrate and coordinate their foreign subsidiaries. It also attempts to understand its operation and antecedents. To this aim, the cross case studies method was mobilised. So, the research compares fourteen French multinationals which operate in different industries and have for the smallest 2 000 employees and for the biggest 270 000 salaries in the world. The survey combines both thirty-two semi-structured interviews conducted with different human resources professionals and a thorough analysis of intern and public documentation (annual reports, companies’ websites, professional press etc. ). At first, the results discuss the topicality of the Perlmutter and Heenan’s model (1979) in the studying contexts. In the second time, they emphasize the role of IHRM in the decentralization of international activities and in best practices diffusion. Then, results propose a model which emphasized antecedents and complementarity nature of control by IHRM mechanisms. This model shows the importance of structural and environmental context, particularly the institutional factors in the design of control system. To conclude, this framework suggests forecasts about the evolutions of IHRM firm’s practices

Texto completoHistory, economy and policy are the main factors which explain why the French forces were so important in west and central Africa. Until a short time ago, companies were in a euphoric period. That's why this part of the world has begun to be one of the most important areas for the French external business and also for the increase of companies number. With the establishment of the economic crisis in the 80', companies have turned their strategies into including this new context. At this time, big companies have maintained themselves, but number of the smaller has decreased significally. Nevertheless, during this period, French companies have discovered the rest of Africa and are begun to be more and more interested in countries as Kenya, Nigeria or south Africa. But in analyzing all French investments it appears that they are staying at a low in Africa, which is not a priority, instead of Europe, north America or Asia

Texto completoThis thesis aims to further clarify the territorial deployment of foreign settlements in China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although the period examined extends from 1846 to the retrocession of the last concessions in 1946, special emphasis is placed on the 1910s, a decade which spelled the end of expansionist logic. The first part analyzes the project of expansion led by the French Municipality of Tianjin from 1902 to 1946 in the Laoxikai District 老西開. This symbolic example serves both as pillar and springboard for writing a connected history of the expansion of foreign settlements. The case study on Tianjin provides a clearer analysis that encompasses Shanghai and Hankou in the second part. Establishing a perspective on the three cities reveals the principles and conditions under which foreign imperialism evolved in China, where mutually competing forces played leading roles. Further, it captures and illustrates the mechanisms of exchange and compromise engaged with Chinese officials and urban citizens. It also discloses the difficult position and weakness of the Chinese State before and after the 1911 Revolution, and the complexity of the relationship between national and local authorities. Finally, it offers a unique vantage point from which to observe sections of Chinese society within the treaty ports whose forms of expression and protest experienced a significant turning point in the 1910s. Relationships between these intertwined evolutions challenge both the dominant historiographical narrative on Western triumphant imperialism and orthodox representations associated with Chinese "modern" nationalism

Texto completoThis work of applied economics is divided in two parts: the first parts include an analysis of the American food sector and its organization. It specifies food manufacturers-distributors relationships; food market structures (economies of scales, barrier to entry,) and presents the main actors with their corporate strategies. The first part also sums up the different research work of American agricultural economists since the last war and points out the two main factors of the sector's mechanisms: brand promotion, especially the central role of advertising, and the necessity to launch new products. The second part presents French food companies settled in the United States, and the corporate strategies they develop, utilizing diverse schools of strategic thinking. A first chapter analyzes the competitive advantage of the French firms, as well as the effects of foreign direct investment on the competitive positioning of these firms. With the example of the cheese sector, the second chapter shows the need to analyze thoroughly each cheese segment in order to optimize the utilization of promotional activities (promotions, advertising merchandising) on each of them. The third chapter analyzes the process of new product creation as a source of competitive advantage. It raises the issue of first mover advantage versus late entrant advantage. This last chapter also sums up comments and scenarios about the potential strategies for French firms in the US. The general conclusion consolidates the lessons learned in the two parts. It shows that French firms posses the required competitive advantages to conquer the US food market. This conquest would provide them with additional competitive advantages, stemming from the US market structure, and usable in turn in a larger internationalization process

Texto completoTransnational corporations, which are amongst the major players in the contemporary global economy, integrate and exclude territories at various scales, due to their specific location strategies. These inequalities are well known at an international scale, yet the knowledge of this diverse integration is much more limited regarding urban levels, although cities and metropolises are considered as being the major nodes of the globalized networks. France and the OECD countries certainly appear in central positions in the networks that characterize these corporations, but observations made at the urban level remain very partial due to the lack of localized data. This thesis suggests to both approach and localize conventional data about Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the French case by mobilizing data about financial links connecting economic units. The detailed breakdown of transnational corporations affiliation networks has been conducted up to the level of the establishments, which are the real individual economic and geographic cells of these transnational networks. An original database about localized inward FDI stocks has been built and explored to appreciate how far foreign transnational corporations integrate the 355 main cities into the French urban system. These data revealed the diverse integration of French cities, between dependence and attractiveness for the investors. The mobilization of scaling laws, which constituted a major analytical tool in this work, allowed us to identify the major factors explaining the diverse integration of French cities into the whole system of cities, reflected both by inequalities of hierarchical and regional order

Texto completoThe actual Ivorian Tax System stems from that of her former colonial power, France. The accession of Côte d'Ivoire to international sovereignty in 1960 did not cancel the similarities with the French tax System, which are still striking. Yet the Ivorian tax System development did not know the same fate as that of France. If in France, a country with an old tax System, the building of her tax System came through levying local taxpayers, on the contrary in independent Côte d'Ivoire, the évolution of the tax architecture continues to revolve around the foreign company. This option, accepted and subjected to, gradually brings the Ivorian fiscal authorities in a dynamism of improvement whose benefits should now imply more active local populations and turn them into real tax payers-citizens

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis is to study the role of social processes of legitimation underlying MNE subsidiaries' loci development in distant environments from the headquarters. Our thesis explores how subsidiaries attempt to mitigat simultaneous pressures from both their host and their organizational environments. Using an institutionalist theoretical framework based on a multidisciplinary literature, we investigate the nature of the legitimation processes for eight subsidiaries of foreign banks in India, a context characterized by a strong «Liability of Foreignness» (i.e. LOF). We the identify the organisational practices mobilised in order to decrease the «central/local» tensions. Our results suggest that subsidiaries' legitimation strategies -passive (isomorphism, transference), reactive (political lobbying) and proactive (rhetoric)- vary along with their degree of exposure to the LOF and according to the intensity of internal pressures the face: certain subsidiaries seek a deeper “local anchoring” while other subsidiaries rely more on a “world anchoring” benefitting from the headquarters' legitimacy. In a second development, this thesis sketches an estimate of the organisational performance of an MNE subsidiary in relation to its legitimation process in the host environment. Our results suggest that a higher level of local anchoring' is associated positively with a subsidiary's external performance and negatively with its internal performance. This leads the subsidiary and the headquarters to arbitrage between external and internal performance

Texto completoThe problems of my thesis rest on the evolution of the trade on various scales, which should be analyzed simultaneously : great distribution, urbanization, transport, population, and actors commercial by underlining the evolution of the behavior of the consumers. This question is the most important stakes for China, country where industrialization has progressed at very fast intervals for the two last decades. The first part is devoted to recall the evolution of the trade, the urbanization, the organization of space and the urban transport. In one second part, we approach the analysis of the various actors commercial with respect to the arrival of the large foreign distributors. One notes the policies adopted by the State in the sector of the great distribution. According to the central authority the opening of the market is progressive. Whereas, the local authorithies express a more accessible attitude. A comparative analysis shows that the Chinese companies are still fragile : the sales turnover, recruitment, average techniques as well as the service, the influence on the suppliers. The third part of this work concerns the perception of the consumer. The key question was : great distribution, does it adapt to the behaviors of the Chinese consumers ? Can it direct consumption well ?

Texto completoThis doctoral thesis focuses on a question that has been little studied by the historiography of modern China but that is nevertheless fundamental to the understanding of imperialism in the modern history of this nation. By positioning itself at the intersection of three historiographical camps that are connected and yet distinct—urban history, the history of empires, and the history of the forces of law and order—this thesis will seek to emphasise the idea that the circulation of the skills and knowledge-base of a modern state were an example of “statecraft” within the city of Shanghai, which occupied an intermediary position between the European empires and the Chinese state. The primary focus of the thesis is the issue of defence and the maintenance of public order in the French Concession of Shanghai as being indicative of the relations that existed between the French and local authorities, the possible tensions between the empires, the administrative hierarchy of the French Empire on the ground, and the distribution of the power of military command between the civil and military authorities. The objective is to shed light on the shaping of the municipal administration of Shanghai before the establishment of the Kuomintang municipal authority in 1927 on three levels: what form did relations between the three municipalities within the city take? How did the French authorities build a security administration on the ground? Lastly, how did this security administration respond to the challenges of war and military conflict?

Texto completoWith the growth of the Chinese economy, its opening-up and its reform, culture in the foreign-invested enterprises in China is no longer homogeneous. On the contrary, more and more culturally different people work together in these enterprises operating on the Chinese market. Their nationalities, languages, behaviors and attitudes are far from being identical, causing an inevitable socio-cultural clash which is much more complicated than before within these foreign-invested enterprises. Hence the emergence of problems that lead to adverse consequences for the development of these enterprises. On the other hand, when talking about this, what first comes to mind, is often the cultural clash between Asians and their colleagues from Europe or North America, neglecting, at the same time that there are also cultural differences between Asian employees themselves, which are sometimes equally marked but often much less taken into consideration both by scientific researchers and by professionals.Asians are often considered by many researchers in social sciences, in a very simplified way, as a single category in which cultural values, ways of thinking and behaviors between people are very similar. Some vague terms such as "Oriental culture", or "Asian culture", are easily found in cultural comparison researches. Despite historical and traditional reasons, such as the strong influence of Confucianism, there is still a cultural diversity among Asian people. What’s more, culture is evolving in a dynamic way and these Asian people continue to create and develop, depending on the circumstances that transform internal and external social groups, their own values, ways of thinking and behaviors which are unique and different from one another. To highlight the cultural differences between Asian employees in the foreign-invested enterprises established in the Chinese market, to explore the transformation of this diversity and its representations in the working field, and to try to find prospects allowing to provide inspiration and resolutions to the problems originating from this cultural divergence, we chose a research methodology based on thorough semi-structured interviews with different profiles of Asian employees working in different foreign-invested enterprises in China.According to the results we obtained through these interviews, we found that cultural differences exist not only between Chinese employees and their Asian neighbors, in other words the Korean and Japanese employees, but also between Chinese employees and overseas Chinese employees, and even among Chinese employees themselves. When they are working together, these employees have and show different behaviors and ways of thinking in the field of collectivist mind, hierarchy and when facing uncertainty. In our conclusion, we question the idea of setting up a supranational Asian identity, in other words an Asian cosmopolitanism, and we mention the dangers which have to be avoided, such as the nationalism that has been existing in Asia for a long time

The period under study deals with the first decade of socialist transformation until the eve of the Great Leap Forward in 1957. The dissertation first established the place of Songjiang in the regional context and the pre-existing systems of local administration. The establishment of the new communist administration proceeded quickly and smoothly. It was accompanied by an important work of survey of the social and economic system. It is on the basis of these surveys that the system of work units was implemented. It turned into increasing restrictions on the private economic sector and the takeover of production by entities under the control of the local authorities. Handicraft and trade, the two main activities in Songjiang, became the focus of detailed studies that show the concern of the new administration to acquire a deep knowledge of these sectors before the planned radical transformation of the local economic system

Texto completoThe purpose of this thesis is to analyse the impact, over the society and the economy of Argentina, between 1880 and 1914, of the massive influx of foreign capital, through the particular case of the french capital. Our approche is based on investment groups, that is, the interests coalitions who controlled the flow of unds until their employment in argentina. The composition of these groups, their strategies and interaction with others sectors of the local society and economy - the state, the elites, the other investment groups - constitue the axis of our work. After a view of the general evolution of investments, and the economic performance of both countries, france and argentina, we study the different business in which the french groups have participated, including the local and metropolitan conditions which have marked their beginnings and subsequent development. We pointed out therefore the investment strategies, styles of management and sources of profits of the french groups, contributing to discussions about the features of french capitalism, so frequently called "rentist". We also analyse the influence of investments over the local society and economy, not only their direct impact in the regional cases, but also their indirect effects over public policies and on the relations that local elites maintained with foreign investment groups previously established

Texto completoThe concept of nationality of companies, which expresses the political connection between a given company and a State, has long been impossible to define as French judges would resort to different criteria depending on each case. The courts would also frequently mix up the concept of nationality with the notion of « lex societatis », thus creating additionnal confusion. Lastly a 1990 tax case Roval led French Civil Supreme Court to hold that the nationality of a company derives from the location of its effective seat of management. This definition is not totally satisfactory though. It derives from a misinterpretation of the non-discrimination treaty provision applicable to the case, which conveys to this clause a much broader scope than was initially intended by the drafters of the OECD Model convention and indirectly weakens French domestic rules that discriminate among companies depending on their tax residence. The Roval case should be reconsidered in light of the treaty definition of « nationals », which refers to the law of incorporation of the companies. Outside of a tax treaty context, the reference to the effective seat of management concept sounds more suitable. French administrative Supreme Court clarified that such a seat would be where strategic decisions necessary for the conduct of the enterprise’s business are in substance made by the most senior managers. In practise, determining the location of that seat may prove to be quite difficult for certain multinational entities
