That combination of patience, calm and curiosity makes for the perfect detective, capable of surveillance of suspects even in difficult circumstances. Women detectives surfaced in English Literature from the outset of the genre. This paper outlines their evolution and also refers to the most famous women crime writers and their fictional detectives.Key words: women, detectives, English novels, Nordic novels, Spanish novels.La novela de detectives es el marco idóneo para las características arquetípicas de las mujeres. The present article reports on the study of the communicative strategy of self-presentation and the communicative tactics that manifest it in detective discourse. The analysis is based on the data from English detective novels. The object of the study is the characters’ speech: the detective’s interrogation of witnesses and suspects. The scope of the study is the communicative tactics of self-presentation as the means of influencing the suspect in order to obtain the necessary information to solve the crime. The purpose is cognitive and pragmatic analysis of the communicative tactics applied by the detectives to obtain the necessary information to solve a crime. The investigation is based on the general and special linguistic methods : synthesis and analysis, method of observation, descriptive method, pragmatic and linguistic method, analysis of contextual interpretation. The main results of the study. The cognitive and pragmatic analysis of the detective’s strategic plan has resulted in our own classification of communicative tactics and strategies applied by the detective during the interrogation of witnesses and suspects. It has been established that one of the major communicative strategies used by the detective is self-presentation. Self-presentation is realized by the following communicative tactics: tactics of distancing, solidarity, belonging to a certain group. Each of these tactics is manifested by certain lexical, morphological and syntactic means of the English language. The perspective for further research is seen in the comprehensive study of the linguistic mechanisms of manipulative impact on the recipient in fiction.

When T. S. Eliotfamously called Wilkie Collins's 1868 novelThe Moonstone“the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels” (The Moonstone1966, v), the implication, presumably, was that the “detectives” are the hero Franklin Blake and other English characters who carry out the detective function, such as the family lawyer, Mr. Bruff. In addition to a detective story, the novel has been read variously as imperialist, anti-imperialist, a narrative invested with economic undertones, and as an exploration of gift theory, among others. In all these iterations, however, the underlying assumption has been that the only real “detectives” in the novel are the English characters; it is they who solve the theft of the diamond and work to police it. The Brahmin priests, whose pursuit of the diamond parallels that of the English, have generally been viewed as peripheral to the main narrative; a marginal acknowledgement of the impact that India, in its various facets, had upon nineteenth-century English society. Vicki Corkran Willey calls the priests, tongue-in-cheek, “‘villains’. . . working in tandem with two other imported troublemakers – [John] Herncastle's stolen diamond and the drug, opium” (226). Timothy L. Carens describes them as practicing “dutiful self-renunciation” (246) in their search for the diamond, implying that passivity is inherent in such dutifulness, and Jenny Bourne Taylor suggests they are important only because of their use of “[c]lairvoyance [which] is projected on to them as a form of romantic fascination, [and] which they then internalize and represent” (193). Critics are in general agreement, then, that the priests are not central to the novel, and their involvement in the solving of the crime is minimal. The present essay will refute this perspective and argue that, in fact, the Brahmin priests are central to the narrative and far more active (and effective) policing agents than the English characters.

Crime fiction is often mistakenly held to be based on books and male detection. In fact, in the nineteenth century periodicals were a major mode of publication and from the mid-century on women inquirers played a recurring role in the developing genre, while most early male detectives were, by later standards, distinctly under-gendered. Chambers’s Edinburgh Journal was a major early source; by the 1860s, female detectives were being created by male writers and in Bleak House (1852–53), Dickens gave Inspector Bucket’s wife distinct inquiring capacities. The major Australian author Mary Fortune – with more than four hundred stories in magazines over forty years from the 1860s – developed female inquirers over time. By the 1890s, professional English woman detectives were created, Loveday Brooke by C.L. Pirkis and Florence Cusack by L.T. Meade, while Baroness Orczy created as well as her best-selling ‘Scarlet Pimpernel’ the leading police detective Lady Molly, like the others first appearing in magazines.

Purpose The use of the media in live cases has been explored in terms of its use and value to an investigation. However, it is unclear as to whether engaging with the media in cold-case investigations results in a positive or negative reception, and what impact this can have on a case’s possibility for progression. Because of the passage of time and a lack of, or a failed, prosecution means that the approach to media use needs to be different. The purpose of this paper is to explore how the media could be used as an investigative resource for cold cases. Design/methodology/approach This study is a result of a 7-month observation period with a 2-force collaborative cold-case team in England, and supplemented with interviews with 12 experienced cold-case detectives. Using inductive thematic analysis, the themes identified allow an exploration of detectives’ use of the media and the effect that this has on progressing cases. Further, there is discussion as to whether the media’s involvement is positive or negative. Findings The overarching theme is that when using the media, cold-case detectives are met with a positive reception and interest. The media can be used to obtain information, particularly in cases with minimal information, and it is important to use murder-anniversaries to obtain help from the public. However, this needs to be a carefully managed strategy as the media coverage can be negative, including inaccurate or inappropriate reporting which can be of detriment to the investigation. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first paper to explore how cold-case detectives have used the media to progress cases, and the findings demonstrate that when the public are encouraged to come forward with information, there is a better chance of case progression. Further research is required to explore how all cold cases can receive appropriate coverage.

While Wilkie Collins’ novels The Moonstone (1868) and The Woman in White (1859-60) have long been accepted as part of the early mystery canon, Collins’ earlier novel The Dead Secret (1857) is rarely included. The Dead Secret is here reconsidered as one of the earliest English female detective novels, revealing its heretofore unrecognised significance to the genre of detective fiction and the evolution of the literary female detective. The Dead Secret’s protagonist, Rosamond, is almost Holmesian in her methodical collection of evidence and tactical lines of questioning to arrive at the solution of the mystery, but she also employs techniques more often attributed to female detectives, demonstrating the importance of emotion, intuition, surveillance, and proximity. In solving the mystery, Rosamond also disrupts the status quo, as is more typical of sleuthing heroines of sensation fiction. The Dead Secret demonstrates Collins’ innovations to the emerging genre of detective fiction, before its tropes become typified by Sherlock Holmes, and reveals the overlap of tropes that originate with sensation novels.

The article deals with the peculiarities of the image of the female detective in the English female detective prose of the 19thand 20thcenturies. We have traced the changes in theportrayal of the female detective in English literature and singled out the factors which influenced them. First of all, every writer’s experience and life conditions make an impact on the construction of their images. It is obvious that S.Hopley couldn’t but work secretly as her creator C.Crowe wrote detective using the other name. It was the trend of the nineteenth century. In the first part of the twentieth century, women started to obtain different professions alongside men. A.Christie and D.Sayers had an opportunity to be not only writers but even theoreticians of the genre. That is why Miss Marple and H.Vane were able to show their achievements together with men. And the second part of the twentieth century presented women with total freedom. So, we can read about Sharon McCone who is a successful private detective. The second important fact is the situation in the society which for sure is reflected in the realistic literary works and can be easily noticed in the behaviour of the characters. And the last efficient thing is the plot of the story because it dictates the actions which sometimes do not depend on the personality.The article analyzes the characteristic features of the female detectives belonging to three stages of detective development: detective classics(until the early twentieth century), detective modernism(1910–the 1970s), and detective postmodernism(after the1970s).The female detective of detective classics is clever and kind but lacks self-confidence and support. Detectivemodernism shows us an intelligent, smart, very brave, and attentive detective. The woman detective of the postmodern period is smart, courageous, emotional, and hard-working. Thus, we have suggested the canonic image of the female detective. She has a sharp mind, a very high level of knowledge, a sense of responsibility, a strong wish to work, and a little time for her personal life. This woman is pretty, careful, witty, and ready to investigate at any time

Within the framework of this article, the author examines in detail the structure of the hyperconcept "Englishness", paying special attention to the concept of "gardening" included in it, which is most widely represented in British detectives of the XIX century. Using the continuous sampling method, its conceptual component was analyzed. The selected examples are classified according to the representation of the "garden" frame, which is verbalized using such hyperonyms as "flowers", "trees", as well as through the lexemes "grass", "plants". A special role in the detectives of the XIX century is played by the lexeme "rose" as part of the hyperonym "flowers". The following works served as material: "Moonstone" by W. Collins, "A Study in crimson tones" by A. K. Doyle, "Ignorance of Father Brown" by G. K. Chesterton. The author's main contribution to the study of the hyperconcept "Englishness" can be considered an analysis of the representation of the hyperconcept by studying one of its constituent concepts, in our case, the concept of "gardening". Since today most researchers study the complex concept of "Englishness", guided by the techniques of cultural and literary approaches, the relevance of this study is that it is carried out in a linguistic way. As a result, it was concluded that gardening is an integral part of English life, which is verbalized in British detectives of the XIX century. The English people have a special love for roses, which are also represented in the concept of "gardening".

Within the framework of this study, the task of this article was to analyze and compare the image of Home and Family in teenage detective novels from the point of view of similarities and differences written by German (E. Kestner, A. Steinhöfel, A. Schlüter, J. Steinleitner) and English speaking writers (M. Blyton, R. Stevens, A. Bradley and S. Cleverly). The relevance of the task is determined by the fact that the characters of these novels have a significant impact on the formation of the life values of a teenage reader, including the attitude to crime and the punishment. The object of consideration is the images of “home” and “family”, and the material of the study is detective novels for teenagers written in German and English. The study allows us to conclude that despite the fact that the images of “home” and “family” are plot­forming elements in the detective stories of foreign writers, however, their role and significance in the lives of adolescents themselves, as well as their view to these images in the works of German and English speaking authors, differ significantly. While the family and home in German culture is the place where a teenager, in close connection with his parents, goes through the stages of his growing up, relying on the care and experience of the older generation, the family and home for British teenagers is associated with classmates and a school where strict mentors and not parents play the role of educators and teachers and educators. Sometimes it appears to be a negative role.

(CATHERINE LOUISA)PIRKIS'S“The Murder at Troyte's Hill,” second in her series of stories about Detective Loveday Brooke, begins with Brooke's boss debriefing her on a case: “Griffiths, of the Newcastle Constabulary, has the case in hand…. Those Newcastle men are keen-witted, shrewd fellows, and very jealous of outside interference. They only sent to me under protest, as it were, because they wanted your sharp wits at work inside the house” (528). This is a typical beginning for one of Brooke's adventures, which were published in the London magazineLudgate Monthlyin 1893 and 1894. As one of the earliest professional female detectives in English literary history, Brooke's career was marked by conflicts with territorial male officers and the ever-present pressure to keep her detective work “inside the house.” Emerging at a historical moment when understandings of women, criminality, and law enforcement were rapidly changing in Britain, Pirkis's stories offer an interpretation of these intersecting cultural shifts that is surprisingly different from her contemporaries. In a decade rife with scientific interrogation into the nature of criminality, such as in the work of Havelock Ellis and Francis Galton, detective fiction of the 1890s tended to mimic scientific discourse in its representations of criminals. The Brooke stories, however, challenge such conceptions of deviance and reveal the poverty of their underlying understandings of crime as well as gender.

The issue of classification as the leading principle of organizing the set of texts by B. Akunin about Erast Fandorin are considered in the article. Particular attention is paid to the manifestation of this principle at the level of genre organization of texts and at the level of semantic and character components of works. The relevance of the study is due to the identification of the semantic constant of the metacycle about Erast Fandorin. It has been proved that the principle of taxonomy in the Fandorin corpus has two variants of manifestation — at the level of metacycle organization and at the level of semantics of the key motive of a classic detective — explaining the method used by the detective. The results of a comparative analysis of the image of Fandorin and his literary predecessors: detectives, derived in the texts of the authors of a classic detective story, are presented, and it is proved that Fandorin is the only one who explains in detail his method of investigation based on psychological classification. The authors dwell on the fact that the explanation of the method of investigation is an element of an intertextual game with the reader and at the same time, the opposition of the Russian detective to his English and American literary predecessors. At the same time, the principle of taxonomy is played up in the intertextual dialogue within the Fandorin corpus — other characters in this metacycle also resort to typing.

Abstract This paper looks at three Indian crime fiction series by women writers who employ different types of female detectives in contemporary India. The series will be discussed in the context of India’s economic growth and the emergence of a new middle class, which has an impact on India’s complex publishing market. I argue that the authors offer new identification figures while depicting a wide spectrum of female experiences within India’s contemporary urban middle class. In accordance with the characteristics of popular fiction, crime fiction offers the possibility to assume new roles within the familiar framework of a specific genre. Writers also partly modify the genre as a form of social criticism and use strategies such as the avoidance of closure. I conclude that the genre is of particular suitability for women in modern India as a testing-ground for new roles and a space that helps to depict and accommodate recent transformations that connect to processes of globalization.

The author examines the features of the narrative structure of the novel of English postmodernism "Morality Play" (Unsworth "Morality Play"). The purpose of this article is to identify the features of the construction of the novel of postmodernism. Postmodern writers tend to transform genres of high literature, making them accessible to mass reading. Moralite is a special kind of dramatic performance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. A detective novel is a phenomenon of mass literature. The detective genre is based on three main elements that form the plot: crime, investigation and solution. In the article, these three elements are considered on the example of the novel "Moralite". Despite the fact that the plot-forming element is a detective component, the author does not fulfill all the genre strategies of the detective. In the presented work, the detective influence of the construction of a postmodern novel will be considered, in which readers are involved in the active process of reconstructing the incident, and the main character finds a solution to all the mysteries and riddles. The relevance of the work is due to the lack of full–fledged Russian-language research on the designated topic - dissertations, collections of articles, monographs. In the novel moralita, the identity of the murderer is not important, the victims are not important. The author is interested in the effect produced by the "performance" played out on the stage. Barry Unsworth demonstrates his vision of creating a new Medieval genre, he shows how this transition to everyday themes took place. One person can change the usual way of life by taking a risk and leading. Wandering comedians, who are the main characters, appear to readers as naive amateur detectives. They are passionate about the process and improve their "Thomas Wells Game", but not for the sake of punishing and exposing the killer. In the process of research, it can be concluded that two main genre layers can be distinguished in the novel – detective and historical. In addition to these genres of features, it can be argued that this is a novel about the genre.

The article covers various aspects of how the idea of higher justice is embodied in the screen images of classic amateur detectives Father Brown and Sherlock Holmes. The first part of the article presents a semantic systematization of scientific and popular science works on screen incarnations of the image of Sherlock Holmes. There are no similar works on Father Brown, which, among other aspects, determines the scientific novelty of our article. The article also provides a comparative analysis of the idea of justice and its later on-screen representations in the Russian and European socio-cultural traditions. The second part focuses on the results of the empirical research that gives an insight into psychological perception of Father Brown and Sherlock Holmes screen images in the film adaptation of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, a British detective series (1984–1993); and in Father Brown— a detective series on BBC One (2013–present). As a result of the conducted research it was concluded that the image of Sherlock Holmes is a more popular and timeless embodiment of the idea of higher justice due to the lack of semiotic bindings to personal identity factors, including confessional ones. On the other hand, the idea of higher justice, embodied in the image of Father Brown, correlates not so much with reason as with the inner moral law of I. Kant, represented in human conscience. However, the Catholic pathos of this idea (extremely important for G.K. Chesterton) in the image of Father Brown does not make the image purely confessional, limited only by the framework of one religious doctrine. The practical significance of the research presented in the article lies in the fact that its results can be used not only in the curriculum of students of directing and filmmaking departments in terms of how exactly the genre of the classic English detective story should be interpreted in modern film adaptations, but also for developers of multimedia environment in their unique creative work with various types of texts of modern culture (physical, verbal, visual, digital).

Resumen
The article touches upon various lexical-semantic peculiarities of Andrii Kokotiukha’s detective novels, specifically the nomination of people – characters of the novel. Such research are presented mostly from the point of view of literary studies. Scientists studied peculiar features of composition, genre, and plot of detective novels. The question of language and style of detective novels would uncommonly become a subject of research as they are regarded to as so-called mass literature, that is one that is focused on literature preferences of a wide circle of readers, in other words – it is a popular, entertaining, trivial literature. Linguistic research of detective works were mostly done on the material of literary texts of English and French languages, Ukrainian detectives were not a subject of such analysis. Questions of influence of genre peculiarities on the choice of linguistic units was also left beyond attention of researchers, which predetermines the relevance of the research. The source basis of the research consists of detective novels by Andrii Kokotiukha – one of the most notable Ukrainian detective authors. That is a series of retronovels, where the action takes place at the beginning of XX century in Lviv, and three novels about the modern period as well. The aim of the work is to explore lexical units that denote a person in Andrii Kokotiukha’s detective novels in terms of their expressive functions depending on the aim and genre features. Vocabulary of denomination of people is widespread in Kokotiukha’s works. Specifics of detective novels involves agile, dynamic nature of vocabulary and their text. Semantics of people’s names is diverse: its affiliation to the biological genus of humans; gender; age; family status; profession and occupation; status from the point of view of law; class and social structure of Ukrainian society; social status; financial situation; nationality or confession; affiliation to political parties; names of dead people, external signs; temporary sign. The author frequently uses descriptive compounds, metaphors, jargon, and colloquial language. A distinctive method of nominating a person which, according to genre requirements, creates mystery and enigma of presentation, is descriptive compounds with pronouns. Quantitative ratio of lexical groups mentioned depends on the peculiarities of the plot of specific novel. Nomination of people in A. Kokotiukha’s detective novels are components of dynamic and static descriptions, help convey the cultural-historical background, create the appropriate emotional tint. That is one of the elements which ensures that the text corresponds to the canons of detective genre.

On 25 november 2012, when the united states novelist jonathan franzen opened mexico's feria internacional del libro de guadalajara, he spoke of his experience of reading Latin American fiction. Asked about the region's representation through literature in English translation, Franzen stated that, magic realism having now “run its course,” Roberto Bolaño had become the “new face of Latin America.” Franzen's words echo what has almost become a commonplace in the United States over the last five years: naming Bolaño “the Gabriel García Márquez of our time” (Moore), after the publication by Farrar, Straus and Giroux of the translations of Los detectives salvajes (1998; The Savage Detectives [2007]) and his posthumous 2666 (2004; 2666 [2008]). Bolaño is also considered by many writers, critics, and readers in Latin America to be “reigning as the new paradigm” (Volpi, sec. 3). If in the United States market, through the synecdoche of literary commodification, García Márquez's revolutionary Cien años de soledad (1967; One Hundred Years of Solitude [1970]) and, specifically, the magic realism of his fictional Macondo came to stand in for the diverse literary projects of Latin American authors in the 1960s, one must ask if a similar operation is taking place with Bolaño. While the number of translated Latin American literary works continues to be limited and most “go virtually unnoticed” (“Translation Database”), the significance of Bolaño's place at the center of a new canon in translation is magnified and necessitates inquiring into how his critical success in the United States market may be shifting the politics of translation of other texts. As a critic announced in 2011, “a second Latin American literature Boom is happening … [that] probably owes its existence to the explosion of the late-Chilean author Roberto Bolaño, whose popularity re-opened the door to North American publishing houses for Latin American authors” (Rosenthal).

Resumen
The present article reports on the analysis of the communicative strategy of positive emotional influence in the speech of the detective — the hero of English language detective discourse. The object of the paper is the speech episodes, in which the detective interrogates witnesses and suspects. The purpose of the paper is cognitive pragmatic analysis of the contexts in which the communicative strategy of positive emotional influence is actualized, as well as the communicative tactics that manifest it in the speech of the detective. The investigation is based on the general and special linguistic methods: synthesis and analysis, method of observation, descriptive method, pragmatic and linguistic method, cognitive method, analysis of contextual interpretation. The cognitive-pragmatic analysis of the strategic speech behavior of the police detective — the protagonist of the detective discourse — has shown that the strategy of positive emotional impact is realized in the detective’s speech by the following communicative tactics: promise, request, reassurance, forgiveness, compassion, gratitude, reproach and mitigation. These tactics have been singled out and interpreted. These communicative tactics enable the detective to create favorable and friendly atmosphere and achieve the desired result: sincerity of the witnesses, especially those who used to conceal the information, lied, or refused to cooperate. As a result, a witness or a suspect tells the information necessary for the investigation and the culprit is found. The perspective for further research is seen in the analysis of the detective’s inner speech that unveils his communicative intentions.

Statement of the problem. Against the background of the abolition of Russian culture in European countries, we believe that Russian students need to develop general cultural and foreign language communicative competence on the best examples of world culture. British literature of the 20th century is directly connected with the events of life of the previous time and is represented by the works of such writers as J. Galsworthy, A. Conan Doyle, R. Kipling, W. Maugham, O. Wilde, H. G. Wells, B. Shaw, etc. British literature of the XX century is realist and modernist works, fantasy, detectives and science fiction represent the "golden age" of its heyday and reflects the changes taking place in society, the search for eternal truths and defense of traditional values for all. The purpose of the study is to develop the foreign language reading competence of students-trainee foreign language teachers of the 1st and 2nd years using the works of twentieth-century British literature. Results. The impact of the content form of literature on the worldview, attitudes, values of students is great and occurs regardless of the attitude towards social institutions. The impact occurs at conscious and unconscious levels. In pragmalinguistic terms, the speech genre of fiction narrative implements communicative strategies. Reading is a thinking process, which is managed indirectly through text selection, preparation of pre- and post-text tasks, and control of reading comprehension. The analysis of the results of the ascertaining stage revealed an insufficient level of knowledge of 20th century British literature in the experimental and control groups of students - future teachers of a foreign language. In this connection the experimental program aimed at the optimization of the process of teaching English and increasing the level of knowledge of the British literature of the XX century among students was developed. Conclusion. On the whole we came to the conclusion that the work with the content form of the British literature of the XX century represents a special culture of relationship with the students, contributes to the formation of values, independence, high motivation for cognitive activity. It is important to provide the assimilation of British literature of the XX century on the basis of the analysis of the biography of the writer, the basics of literary criticism, the impact of stories and the author's idea on human life.

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the semantic space of juridical verbs with the subject «Investigator» in English. The theoretical part of the research combines some aspects of «verb-centric» conception and «quantitative linguistics». The notion of a «juridical verb» correlates with a juridical social sphere. The diagnostic semantic features which constitute the structural elements of the semantic space are substantiated. The semantic features are organized into semantic plans. The features of three semantic plans, being «categorical», are correlated with the situational subject «Investigator». These features are: «processual law» («adject-legal» plan), «purpose-oriented» law («adject-functional» plan) and «indefinite» situation («teleological» plan). The «hierarchical» semantic plan is identified as «subcategorical», the features of which differentiate the more concrete subjects within the juridical situation «preliminary investigation» with the situational subject «investigator». These subjects are: «Prosecutor» (the feature «dominant» subject), «Detective» (the feature «subordinate» subject) and «Detective’s Assistant» («subordinate dominant» subject). The features of «criterial» plans are used as additional semantic markers within the semantic space: the «temporal» plan (the features: «retrospective» and «prospective» situations), the «adject-substantive» plan (the features: «material» and «person» adject), the «interactive» plan (the features: «convergent», «divergent»). By means of cluster analysis the semantic features were grouped into three clusters: «Detective», «Detective’s Assistant» and «Prosecutor». Within each cluster the «nuclear» features (constituting the structure of a ‘typal’ meaning) and «periph- eral» features are revealed. The clusters are described and compared on the basis of several cluster criteria: «plan variability of a cluster», «feature variability of a cluster», «nuclear variability of a cluster», «cluster variability of a plan».

The article is devoted to the analysis of the communicative strategy of manipulation and communicative tactics, that manifest it. The research of communicative strategies and tactics instills the respect of wealthy domestic and foreign linguists. The topicality of the study of strategies and tactics is motivated by the various points of view on this issue which results in the ambiguity of the explanation. The article is an attempt to trace the mechanism of manipulation, applied by a woman-detective during the investigation. The analysis is based on the data from English detective novels. The object of the study is the characters’ speech: the woman detective’s interrogation of witnesses and suspects. The scope of the study is the communicative tactics applied by the woman detective to manipulate witnesses and suspects. The purpose is cognitive and pragmatic analysis of the communicative tactics applied by the female detective to manipulate the witnesses and suspects. The investigation is based on the general and special linguistic methods: synthesis and analysis, method of observation, descriptive method, pragmatic and linguistic method, cognitive method, analysis of contextual interpretation. The main results of the study. As a result of the carried out research, we can claim that one of the communicative strategies used by the female detective is the strategy of manipulation. It is explained by communicative tactics of provocation, warning, threats, blackmail, flattery, as well as tactics of false self-presentation. Each of these tactics is marked by certain lexical, syntactic and stylistic means of speech. The ability to control the communicative process and adjust one’s speech actions at individual stages of the dialogue can be considered key to achieving the communicative goal of a female detective. The prospect of further research is a versatile study of linguistic mechanisms of exerting a manipulative influence on the recipient in artistic discourse. The perspective for further research is seen in identifying prosodic means of manipulative impact on the recipient in film discourse.

ABSTRACT This article examines a much-underrated aspect in the Holmesian canon: dreams and the potential for dream-rehearsals by virtue of the brain’s “dream drugstore” faculty. Frequently described as “dreamy-eyed” or the “dreamer” of Baker Street, Holmes possesses powers of visiting scenes of crime “in spirit,” exhibiting powers of oneirogenesis. This unorthodox criminological strategy marks him as a critic of Western rationality, placing him in a genealogy dating back to Thomas De Quincey (who recorded vivid hallucinogenic dreams) and The Moonstone’s character Ezra Jennings (practically the first sleuth in Victorian English literature). In the Holmesian canon, (lucid) dreaming plays a subliminal role, which calls to question what this repressed unorthodoxy in Holmesian investigations implies for the detective’s preeminent science of deduction. Representations and adaptations that do not account for Holmesian oneirogenesis, are incomplete projections of the, ultimately and absolutely, human and oneirically harnessed faculties of the Victorian detective.

Detective discourse abounds in linguistic units with cultural value including precedent phenomena that realize different functions and thus, are employed to achieve particular goals. Forensic fiction texts making use of precedent phenomena as efficient tools of encoding meaning are of special interest. The research is done within the framework of the theory of linguacultural types, discursive research and the theory of precedence. The relevance of the article is due to the interest of modern linguistics in the precedent phenomena studied in the functional and cognitive aspects. Significant features of linguacultural type are wide recognition, typicality and precedence. The focus is on English and American detective discourse. The research methods applied in this study were method of continuous sampling, semantic analysis, the methods of discursive and contextual analysis. This study seeks to investigate the precedent features of masculine linguacultural type “private detective”, represented by the fictional private eye Sherlock Holmes, the protagonist of Arthur Conan Doyle. The task is to define the types of the precedent phenomena with the help of which the precedent feature of the cultural type “private detective” are actualizes in the English language detective discourse. The material includes fiction, cinema and cartoon genres. The author systematizes the repertoire of the precedent phenomena of the English detective discourse, singles out types, identifies the source domains. The study concludes that the masculine linguacultural type “private detective” is a precedent one, as its main cognitive attributes are verbalized by means of precedent phenomena in various genres of English-language detective discourse.

With the rise in the number of ethnic detective novels published yearly it is important to consider how this new genre deviates from its predecessor, hard-boiled detective fiction; language is a place where this deviation is most apparent. Authors of ethnic detective fiction use marked varieties of English to call attention to the ethnicity of protagonists but, more important to this discussion, to highlight the complex ways in which they position themselves against White male hegemony. Ethnic detective fiction highlights the struggles, complications, dangers, and joys of the Other, a character who is typically marked by sexual, racial, or ethnic marginality, as he or she moves towards autonomy. This article examines how Walter Mosley’s Devil in a Blue Dress upends stereotypical assumptions about the legitimacy and complexity of African American English (AAE) and demonstrates how the protagonist, Easy Rawlins, utilizes certain aspects of AAE, such as signifying, multiple negatives, and the invariant form of the verb ‘be’ at key moments in the text to assert himself and shape his identity as an ethnic detective.

The popularity of the children's detective genre defies an apparent clash between the nature of the genre, specifically its reliance on readerly ability and capital crime, and children's literature's specific group of readers, and thus invites investigation. It is therefore peculiar that children's detective fiction has not enjoyed much scholarship, particularly in the English language. While the detective genre is usually discussed under the umbrella term of ‘crime literature’ when it enjoys an adult readership, in children's literature scholarship it is usually tucked into the categories of the ‘adventure’ or ‘mystery’ story. This article aims to address the relative lack of scholarship on children's detective fiction by analysing how the classic detective is adapted for child readers. 1

The author analyzes literary allusions in detective novels by Agatha Christie. For the first time, allusions to the works of W. Shakespeare, C. Dickens, P. G. Wodehouse, G. K. Chesterton are considered in detail. Many allusions are established for the first time. As a material for writing this article, a large number of novels were used, among which there are also rarely considered texts of the English writer. The meaning of allusions to "Twelfth Night" in the novel "The Sad Cypress" is revealed in detail, to the works of Wodehouse – in the novel "Why not Evans?" In the article, in the context of the studied problem, the features of escapism of the detective genre are considered. Based on the consideration of examples from a number of novels by Agatha Christie, conclusions are drawn about the significance of literary allusions in her novels in general and in specific works in particular. Allusions expand the semantic field of novels, allow Agatha Christie to go beyond the detective story, limited by the principles of formulaic literature, to consider psychological problems, to portray ambiguous characters in the spirit of classical English literature. At the same time, with the help of a significant number of allusions emphasized by the author, the literary nature of what is happening in detective novels is brought to the fore, which largely corresponds to the escapist nature of this genre.

The monograph of the American scholar Joseph A. Kestner is devoted to Victorian novels and stories that feature a female detective protagonist. The author introduces a large volume of little studied texts written in the period from 1864 to 1913, which he explores to follow the process of the female detective character taking shape, noting its specific structural and sociocultural traits as well as features of narration. As a literary example and a starting point, the author considers the character of the amateur detective Sherlock Holmes: it is in comparison and polemic with him that the character of a female detective is formed in the subsequent literary tradition. In recognizing realistic prose as documentary evidence, the author painstakingly reconstructs the historical context, mostly in the area of gender issues. This enables him to shed a new light on the origins of English detective writing, while not without certain limitations.

This paper is aimed at presenting a comprehensive multi-level analysis of the blurb as a component of an Anglo-American publication and created after a classical detective novel. Blurbs are conventionally placed on book covers (or on the Internet) describing the book content and strategically presenting the book to its potential audience. The multi-level model for comprehensive blurb analysis is pioneered, combining lexical, morphological, syntactic, graphic-visual and pragmatic levels of analysis. This study pursues to prove that blurbs are marked by their special communicative purpose and are inherently multi-functional (advertising, persuasive, influential) created with a view to persuade prospective audience to purchase the book. With respect to these blurbs are strategically equipped with various discursive and linguistic markers outlined in each of the levels of the model. At the structural level the structural divisions of the blurb invariant are investigated: the respective introduction, the central part and the final part. At the lexical level the appropriate lexical components of the introduction, central part and final part are analyzed. A set of corresponding standard lexical repertoires for each of these parts is established. At the morphological level the grammatical structures of each part are analyzed and described. At the syntactic level, the traditional syntax of each of the relevant parts is analysed. The graphical-visual level identifies the graphical and visual means that are most efficiently used by blurb creators to appeal to the audience. At the pragmatic level the pragmatic functions of the blurb are identified, which exercise the appropriate pragmatic impact on the reader. The study indicates that the process of making a blurb requires adherence to certain blurb-making laws and conventions.

Resumen
The article deals with the feminist component in the detective novels «The Double Game in Four Hands» by I. Rozdobudko and «Gaudy Night» by D. Sayers. Its dominant features are distinguished: original female images and women's writing which is manifested through the detailing and usage of parenthetical constructions. The common and distinctive features of the use of the feminist component in the Ukrainian and English female detective discourse are described. The similarity and difference in the images of Musya Gurchyk and Harriet Vane who are the expressions of the creative method of detective writers are analyzed. The emotional and detailing functions of the parenthetical constructions are described. It is emphasized that the feminist component plays an important role in the creation of the genre of the female detective novel.

Resumen
While from the viewpoint of typology it is often stated that the genre of detective fiction originated with the work of Edgar Allan Poe, this statement can be challenged from the standpoint of literary or reception history. Several recent histories of detective fiction emphasize the importance of employing a wider generic view, yet they hardly expand their perspective beyond English literary traditions. This paper examines how the usual, theorized requirement for detective fiction concerning the work’s exclusive focus on the crime committed and its detection was not characteristic of nineteenth-century detective stories written in Central Europe. Even though the detective story pattern is recognizable in Mór Jókai’s short story, “A három királyok csillaga” [‘The Star of the Magi’], it does not dominate the entire depiction, but rather represents one strand woven into a tragic love story as well as the history of national resistance, aspects bearing equal significance in this very sophisticated work.

This article deals with the problem of determining the place of the English argot in a literary text. The main functions of argot in a literary text are described. The author analyzes the expressive function of the English argot by the example of a detective novel by J.H.Chase. Considerable attention is paid to the expressive function of the English slang as a means of enriching the language of a literary work.
