Resumen
English is a necessity in a technological life such as this moment. Therefore, introducing English should start as early as possible. So that the opportunities, especially for children, will be greater in mastering the English. One of the efforts that can be made by teachers is by introducing English, especially vocabulary, through songs. Apart from being a medium Songs are also one of the alternatives that can be used by teachers to create fun learning. This study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach that focuses on how English songs affect spelling in English. From the results of the research obtained, songs have a level of high effectiveness that can be used in the introduction of English spelling to participants.

Resumen
River diversion is a procedure carried out prior to constructing a dam. It is conducted by diverting water from the main river so that the main dam construction work can be executed at a specifically dry area. In Meninting Dam, the diversion system consists of two main structures, namely cofferdam and diversion tunnel that is equipped with a navigation structure at the upstream part of the tunnel. During the construction, cofferdam experienced overtopping on June 17, 2022. The overtopping most likely occurred because of the diversion tunnel’s inability to divert the actual flood effectively during the construction. Therefore, this research aimed to analyse the effectiveness of Meninting Dam’s proposed diversion tunnel against design flood discharge for a return period of 25 years. The data used in this research were the updated version of the ones used to design the whole construction of Meninting Dam’s diversion system, while the flow conditions along the diversion tunnel were analysed using HEC-RAS. At the same time, the analysis was also carried out using the Level Pool Routing Method as a comparison. The analysis results show that the design flood discharge for a return period of 25 years in Meninting Dam Watershed is 265,62 m3/s. This causes the water level along the diversion tunnel reach el. +165,95 m above sea level. Taking into account that the cofferdam crest elevation is at +170,00 m above sea level, it could be concluded that Meninting Dam’s proposed diversion tunnel, which is 4 m wide and 4 m tall is able to divert the design flood discharge for a return period of 25 years effectively. The investigation results in Meninting Dam Watershed show that the main cause of the overtopping was heavy precipitation. This caused the increasing water level at the upstream part of the cofferdam that resulted to its inability to function properly, taking into account that it was still under construction when it occurred

Resumen
Social innovation (SI) aims at improving people’s life when technological or business innovations are not sufficient. However, the classic Triple Helix (TH) theory does not explicitly deal with SI, and relegates civil society to a passive role. This paper aims to analyze if SI requires an evolution of the TH framework. The methodology is a multi-case study based on SI projects and initiatives in the energy sector. The main findings are that citizens are involved in SI though to various extents: there are SI projects carried out “for” citizens, “with” citizens, and to a much lesser extent; “by” citizens. SI in the energy sector rely also on the commitment of the local government and the presence of social enterprises. Therefore, we suggest that a Quadruple Helix (QH) approach may be necessary for energy-related SI.

Summary It has become widely accepted that English has undergone no interruption in transmission, its paucity of inflection treated as a random loss paralleled in Scandinavian. This paper argues that English has in fact lost more of the Proto-Germanic inheritance than any other Germanic language including Afrikaans. These losses extend far beyond inflection: where other Germanic languages overtly mark a given feature, in a great weight of cases English leaves the distinction to context. While there are no grounds for treating English as a “creole”, the evidence strongly suggests that extensive second-language acquisition by Scandinavians from the eighth century onwards simplified English grammar to a considerable extent. Résumé On accepte que l’anglais est une langue qui s’est transmise sans heurts, et que la disparition quasi-totale de sa flexion n’est qu’un changement aléatoire, que l’on retrouve également dans les langues scandinaves. Dans cet article, on soutient qu’en fait, l’anglais est la langue qui a éliminé le plus de traits du germanique commun, surpassant même l’Afrikaans. Parmi ces traits éliminés, on ne compte pas que la flexion: là où d’autres langues germaniques marquent de façon obligatoire divers traits, dans un nombre déterminant de cas l’anglais laisse ces distinctions au contexte. Bien qu’il n’existe aucune raison de qualifier l’anglais de “créole”, tout porte à croire que l’apprentissage à grande échelle de l’anglais par des scandinaves à partir du huitième siècle a considérablement simplifié la grammaire de l’anglais. Zusammenfassung Es ist mittlerweile allgemein anerkannt, dass die englische Sprache sich ohne Bruch entwickelte, wobei man davon ausgeht, dass der Verlust der Flexionsendungen wie auch im Skandinavischen rein willkürlich vonstatten ging. Dieser Aufsatz zeigt, dass die englische Sprache tatsächlich aber mehr von ihrem protogermanischen Erbe verloren hat, als jede andere germanische Sprache, eingeschlossen Afrikaans. Diese Verluste beziehen sich auf weit mehr als die Flexion. Wo andere germanische Sprachen ein bestimmtes Merkmal ausdrücklich kennzeichnen, überlässt die englische Sprache in vielen Fällen dem Kontext die Unterscheidung. Obwohl es keinerlei Anhaltspunkt gibt, Englisch als Kreolsprache zu betrachten, gibt es Beweise, die eindeutig darauf hinweisen, dass die englische Grammatik im Zuge des Zweitsprachenerwerbs der Skandinavier, die seit dem 8. Jahrhundert nach Großbritannien strömten, erheblich vereinfacht wurde.

In Malaysia what was at first Standard English has over time changed and a variety called Malaysian English has arisen. This variety of English is full of colloquial expressions and the grammar also differs slightly from that of Standard English. This paper surveys Malaysian speakers’ attitudes towards Malaysian English and Standard English. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results show that the informants consider Malaysian English useful for informal and everyday communication whereas Standard English is more useful for international communication as well as more formal purposes. A good command of Standard English is still regarded as important. It became evident that while the informers were aware of Malaysian English and its linguistic characteristics, identifying them in written sentences was not easy. The informants’ attitudes towards Malaysian English and Standard English showed that one variety does not have to exclude the existence of the other.<br>Vad som först var standardengelska har i Malaysia över tid ändrats och en ny variant kallad malaysisk engelska har växt fram. Denna variant av engelska är full av lokala uttryck och grammatiken skiljer sig delvis från standardengelskans. Denna studie undersöker talares attityder till malaysisk engelska och standardengelska med hjälp av en enkät. Resultaten visar att malaysisk engelska är användbar för informell och vardaglig kommunikation medan standardengelska är mer användbar för internationell samt mer formell kommunikation. Att behärska standardengelska anses fortfarande vara viktigt. Det blev tydligt att även om informanterna var medvetna om malaysisk engelskas lingvistiska särdrag så var det inte helt enkelt att identifiera dem i skrivna meningar. Informanternas attityder till malaysisk engelska och standardengelska visade att en variant inte nödvändigtvis utesluter den andra.

In spite of having a fixed standard of pronunciation, English is being used in various ways in parts of the world, particularly in its way of utterance. English vowel is playing one of the significant roles in making different varieties of English language. This essay tries to see into detail how some phonetic features (formant movement, frequency, pitch) of English vowels vary in relation to Bengali, Catalan, Italian, Spanish and Swedish speakers. It has been found that all these speakers vary a lot from each other in the utterance of English vowels.

This study investigates language choice in Malaysian literature written in English in three different phases of Malaysian sociopolitical development: the Immediate Post Independence Era (1957–1980), the Mahathir Era (1981–2002) and the Current Era (2003–2006).The study is organised around three major objectives. The first examines the development and the use of Malaysian English (MalE) by Malaysian writers; the second examines the extent to which the use of MalE relates to the sociocultural development in Malaysia; and the third explores the significance of shifts in writing style involving the use of localised English. The study identifies, categorises, and analyses instances of MalE in Malaysian literature in English in terms of these three overarching objectives.The outcomes of this study suggest that the use of a nativised endonormative variety of English in Malaysian postcolonial writings is becoming more prevalent, and that such a harnessing of linguistic resources by Malaysian writers has important ramifications in terms of the construction and maintenance of a shared Malaysian national identity.

Building upon the macro analysis of the rhetorical structure of the text, Systemic Functional linguistics (SFL), in which Thematic structure and Transitivity processes and other grammatical features are examined, will be utilised to investigate how language is organized to make meaning in journal abstracts in the current study. The purpose of this study is to investigate patterns of similarities and differences between journal abstracts written for a local Chinese readership and international readership by investigating the linguistic features embedded in the abstract part of research articles (RA). The analytical approach facilitated by Santos’s (1996) five move analysis model and the informing SFL linguistic theory is intended to explore the gene structure and features of Chinese English RA abstracts in comparison to the international academics in the World Englishes (WE) context.

Resumen
Originated in England, English language is a West Germanic language that belongs to the Indo-European language family. From its introduction to the British Isles, the tremendous changes it experienced shaped and developed it into the current lingua franca. In order for English to become a dominant and significant language as it is now, it has gone through a development marked by signifi cant historical events and cultural exchanges. This study analyses Anglo Saxon English/Old English which is considered as the foundation of Englishes that are spoken and studied today. The key area that is analysed in this study includes the morphological features of Anglo Saxon English along with its comparison to the Modern English translation. Textual comparison is used for this purpose focusing on the historical poem: Caedmon’s Hymn. Furthermore, this research underscores how Old English morphology laid the groundwork for modern grammatical structures. The study reveals a gradual simplification of inflections over time, which led to a more streamlined syntax. Understanding these historical transformations enhances our appreciation of the language’s resilience and adaptability. The findings of this study emphasise the significance of historical linguistic evolution in shaping English, highlighting the enduring impact of its Anglo-Saxon roots on contemporary language. Resumen
The present research investigates the types of linguistic borrowings used in Sri Lankan English (SLE) novels and their role in shaping linguistic and cultural identity. As a distinct postcolonial variety of English, SLE has evolved through continuous interactions with Sinhala and Tamil, embodying a dynamic blend of linguistic influences that highlight Sri Lanka’s multi lingual and multi cultural context. This study closely examines the use of borrowings in three Gratiaen Prize-winning novels: The Jam Fruit Tree by Carl Muller, The Road from Elephant Pass by Nihal De Silva, and Playing Pillow Politics at MGK by Lal Medawattegedera. Employing a qualitative content analysis framework, the borrowings in these novels are categorized into three primary types: loanwords, loan blends, and loan shifts. Loanwords frequently represent culturally specific items, practices, and concepts within the narrative, grounding the stories firmly within a Sri Lankan setting and allowing readers to engage with the cultural specificity of SLE. Loan blends, which combine English with local language elements, facilitate the expression of nuanced cultural concepts, making these terms more accessible to Sri Lankan readers while preserving local meaning. Although less frequent, loan shifts adapt idiomatic expressions and metaphors from Sinhala and Tamil, preserving their cultural significance while integrating them into English. The study concludes that these borrowings significantly enrich the authenticity and cultural relevance of SLE literature, highlighting the hybridity and adaptability of SLE within the broader framework of postcolonial Englishes and reflecting its unique position in the evolving landscape of World Englishes. Resumen
We describe a two-year study of the relationship between the Duolingo English Test (DET) and the academic English ability of non-native international students at DePauw University. We found DET scores to be significantly correlated with on-campus faculty assessments of English ability for incoming international students (r = 0.62*** for written ability and r = 0.49*** for oral comprehensibility). We also found that DET scores significantly predict the faculty’s decisions to place certain students into academic English support classes. Furthermore, the DET was more strongly associated with faculty assessments than TOEFL® iBT scores. These results were consistent across both cohorts of first-year students studied (2014 and 2015 incoming classes).

The Duolingo English Test is a computer adaptive test that provides an overall score that represents test taker English language proficiency. However, stakeholders, such as university admissions officers, often want to make decisions based on test taker ability in one or more components of language ability, such as speaking. Similar to overall scores, subscores should meet standards of reliability when used for decision making. In addition, subscores should provide distinct information about the test takers’ abilities above and beyond the overall score. In this paper, we report on the research behind four subscores reported by the Duolingo English Test (Literacy, Conversation, Comprehension, and Production) that can be used by stakeholders to make decisions about test takers.
