This thesis focuses a body of paintings and wall paintings initiated in 2014 and continuing to the present day. It was a pivotal year when I went from figurative painting to abstract painting based on the drawing of an endless line that never intersects. The purpose of this research is to analyze this ‘line being’ that replaced the figure, organizing itself in colored waves, folds, overlays and twists. If chance secretly directs the drawing of the line on the canvas or in situ, it acts in respecting opposing forces and notions, such as emptiness and fullness, background and form, appearance and disappearance, form and formlessness. The line is thus a pictorial version of the twisting Möbius ribbon that places the front and back on the same side. It is by this principle that it becomes dynamic and generates a cosmogony within which the wave and the fold move before bursting into color. The proliferation of the biomorphic line has given rise to creative phases that constitute my field of investigation. A painting is an “X-ray of action”. How did the line change into a wave? How does the line, by means of hollowing out and “alternate overlapping,” continue its path and open up possibilities of forms and voids? How does the sliding of paint create the illusion of movement through transparency and depth? Finally, how did the dripping gesture in painting emerge as the “being” that would become color?

Life is propelled by a type of inertia which is the tendency of people to unconsciously act upon their past experiences and personal preferences in their daily affairs, thereby developing a circle of behavior. In the process of self-searching, one discovers an “Id Inertia,” essentially the creation of the “self,” determined by this cycle of habitual and somewhat predictable thoughts and behaviors. Transcending this cycle requires self-reflection. Through a deeper perception, one analyzes the creative inertia of one’s being. And just as a plant bursts forth from a seed to start a new life, introspection brings transformation. In this work, the artist uses the creative medium of clay as a language to reconstruct the relationship between objects and the self with the objective of freeing oneself from the material constraints of life through self-awareness.

Representatives coming from all over the world gathered in the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference, regarding energy saving and carbon reduction issue, there is still no effective policy to improve the climate change. Because the amount of carbon emissions still can''t be controlled effectively, low-carbon lifestyle is much harder to accomplish in a short time, thus the issue of global warming is getting more important. The study creation is going to apply traditional paper sculpture, which constructed from deconstruction, shape, and color. The paper sculpture will be presented by 2D animation and aims to underline the global warming issue for people to reflect it in mind, which is the core value of the research. This study takes analysis of documents, case analysis and creative thinking method, which purpose is not only to assess the global warming, paper sculpture, and 2D animation but also to value the commercial applications on paper sculpture, and then take the conclusion to create the works of this research. Hope to develop the brand-new visual expression by this creation to notice people the severe damage from global warming has caused, and also for the related research to refer in the future.

Bill Viola, a master of video art, concerns about the “Life” issues of human being, creates works traversing the personal landscape of body, mind and spirit, such as the human senses, perception, consciousness, and self-awareness, etc., as to personal passions and meditations of birth and death, even the metaphysical transcendence and rebirth and ascension of the soul. In the beginning, he explored the potential of the medium video, and has been using it as a tool to investigate the phenomena of the living-world by grasping the technological nature of it. Owing to the birth and passing of his beloved ones, he has more profound realization of the connotations of life and the destination of soul. With long-term pondering and practice of the eastern and western religions, from which Viola extracts abundant spirituality without falling into any of the specific religious ideology, to create the touching oeuvre full of mysterious atmosphere, as an attempt to release the self and human beings from suffering. He is one of the less than handful contemporary video artists who make art with so-called old-fashioned religious and spiritual contents. The author investigates the development of the context of Viola’s creation which seemly reflects his endless searching and reflections of human life. With an axis of the life issues which Viola interests for a long time, selecting the representative ones from the huge number of works of Viola’s every period , the author reorganizes and connects them and tries to construct a schema of life puzzle and find out the trend of the core of the ultimate concern of the subject matter in the creation of Bill Viola.

“Color Image Composes -The Endless Story of Life” means the story never conclusion in humanity's life. The author goes using the color image to compose with the recorded experience of life. Human are born with inwardness, as well as “the seven emotions and six sensory pleasures”. The dissertation is trying to investigate this emotion base on the phase creation of source. The richness of life results from “feelings”. “Feelings” opens the imagination and the inspiration; “Feelings” stimulates the creativity and the potential of life, courage, the energy of earnest facing ourselves. Further, it brings multicolor to us. This creation is to present the feelings of life, which including personal experiences, in terms of what we see and hear in our daily stories, and creates with our own subjective cognitions. Using different color blocks, I express my own feelings. In other words, my cognition of feelings is transmitted into colors. Or using abstract content form to transform emotions into physical shapes can also be described as my imagination of unknown. Author's creation form divides into “the color block” and “the ghost” two series. By converting my abstract thoughts into colors on the canvas and generating from my design purpose and goal, my creation ideas and elements can be fully analyzed.

Road traffic crashes are one of the worst risks of road mobility worldwide, representing a huge socio-economic problem particularly in developing countries such as South Africa. In order to provide a sound economic basis for investment decisions to address this challenge, it is critical to assess the cost of these crashes. These estimates serve cost-benefit analysis inputs to facilitate a more efficient resources allocation for interventions to address the challenge posed by road crashes. South Africa has not been updating crash cost estimates on a regular basis, and those that were conducted used the much criticised human capital approach. Therefore, the available estimates could not be relied upon for planning purposes and comparison with the estimates of other countries. It is against this background that this study developed and illustrated the application of a hybrid framework for assessing the cost of road traffic crashes in South Africa. The framework uses the human capital approach and the willingness-to-pay approach in one study. Human capital approach cost estimates are needed to inform planning to maximize the national output, while the willingness-to-pay estimates are more suitable when the main concern is to inform interventions to increase social welfare by reducing injuries and fatalities. The willingness-to-pay approach uses the contingent valuation and the stated preference methods. A survey questionnaire with contingent valuation and stated preference questions was administered in two phases to a sample of 273 respondents within the transport industry. For the human capital approach, the cost estimates in the 2016 Cost of Crashes in South Africa report were adjusted for inflation using the 2017 rate of 5.3% to obtain 2017 cost estimates. This study revealed that the human capital approach underestimates the cost of road crashes. The study contributes to the body of knowledge by using the human capital approach and the willingness-to-pay approach in one study to illustrate the applicability of this hybrid/ combination within the South African context. Future research needs to replicate this study on a sample drawn from all nine provinces of South Africa, so that the cost estimates are representative of the country’s population.
