Texto completoThe first chapter shows that conformism leads to a reduction in wealth inequalities, and even to a catch-up, when an initially rich household works less than an initially poor household ; and that the additional income acquired by the initially poor household, by working more, corresponds, more precisely, to the wealth surplus initially held by the rich household. The second chapter shows that the negative effects of social benefits on labor supply are mitigated by status-seeking behavior. Finally, chapter 3 shows that any environmental policy, consisting of taxing polluting goods and using the revenues from this taxation to subsidize the consumption of non-polluting goods, leads to an increase in both employment and environmental quality. However, when polluting goods and non-polluting goods are not perfect substitutes, the increase in purchasing power resulting from subsidies may lead to an increase in the consumption of polluting goods

Texto completoThe first chapter notes a change in the composition of private intergenerational transfers inFrance over time, from more intrahousehold transfers in the 1980s to more inheritance in thenew millennium. Using a three-period overlapping generations model, we show that a risein wealth inequality can influence the composition of these transfer. However, the share ofintrahousehold transfers in human capital accumulation and the extent of the preference tobequeath can influence this inequality. The second chapter looks at the role of the demographic boom on the prevalence of informal employment, with the context of Egypt. We introduce overlapping generations of heterogeneous education levels in a multi-sectoral model. After calibrating and simulating the model, we show that a temporary demographic boom of better educated workers can have long-run effects on non-formality rates, interacting with output and prices. We contrast this actual dynamic adjustment with counterfactuals, emphasizing the importance of demographics and private sector constraints on non-formality rates. The third chapter examines the heterogeneity of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) inMorocco. These enterprises are grouped into three categories: top performers, potentialgazelles and “others.” The paper finds that top performers tend to do relatively well inall areas examined. Potential gazelles, on the other hand, appear to choose their sectorsof economic activity differently and appear to face particular constraints when it comes toaccess to credit and the ability to link to other businesses. Moreover, while formal firmsappear to exhibit significant heterogeneity, informal firms are less heterogeneous, showing asmall upper echelon that can compete with formal firms, while others are not starkly differentform each other

Texto completoEconomics often study public employment from the point of view of the efficient provision of collective goods and services. This dissertation is composed of three papers which look at public employment in developing countries from three different perspectives. The firs paper studies the wage gap between the public and private sector in Vietnam and their evolution between 1993 and 1998; in this period, the gap in favor of public employees is increasing. We show that this evolution is due to a raise in wages of the most qualified workers in the public and not to the selection of more productive workers. Our interpretation of this result is that the wage increase in the public sector is motivated by political reasons. The second paper studies the national employment guarantee program in India, which offers to each rural household 100 days of employment on public works. We show that the program crowds-out private employment and raises wages for unskilled workers. The wage increase benefits to the poorest households at the expenses of the richest, which doubles the redistributive impact of the program. The third paper evaluates the effect of an information campaign held during local elections in Rajasthan (India), which emphasized village leader responsibilities in implementing the employment guarantee. We show that the campaign discouraged the worse performing incumbents and encouraged new candidates from disadvantaged background to enter. This suggest that public employment provision is an important issue which has the potential to change the local political equilibrium

Texto completoThe present work consists of three essays. The first studies Chinese migration to urban areas to determine whether migrants are discriminated against in terms of wages and job type in the urban labor market. A Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition with respect to wages shows that rural migrants are discriminated on salary, but all migrants (rural and urban) are victims of employment discrimination with formal contracts. Essay 3 studies the effect of migration on the labor market in Honduras. Using the the skill cell model devised by Borjas (2003) it finds that the sudden and intense emigration from Honduras following Hurricane Mitch resulted in a wage increase of around 20% for each emigration of 10% of the population between 2001 and 2007, an elasticity that is much higher than previous studies on the subject. In addition, emigration from Honduras increased hours worked and under-employment, while reducing the self-employment. Essay 4 examines the effects of emigration on the behaviour of labour within households in Honduras and found that there was little difference in how households changed their behaviour immediately after the hurricane. By contrast, after 31 months the municipalities that were most exposed were also more likely to receive remittances and reduce child labour. After 47 months, they were also more likely to have an self-employed adult working in the household

Texto completoEvery individual has benefitted from some kind of experience (professional or personal). The question is what does one draw from experience ? The Accreditation of previous learning proposes an approach that evaluates this previous experience using a set of historic, legal and philosophical markers. Within the Accreditation of previous learning framework, it is possible to assess the validity and the legitimacy of an action plan concerning professional practices. My dissertation applies this approach to the social and medical-social sector. The Accreditation of previous learning could be considered as a relatively recent training system which could eventually influence other types of training courses and the actors involved in them. The main objective of this qualitative and empirical study is to highlight the effects of the Accreditation of previous learning plan on the candidates as well as on other actors. I analysed the data recorded in the logbook during in situ observation, and the result of twenty semi-directive interviews. The research results show the necessity of designing social and medical-social work, from the perspective of a process of inevitable change, taking place in the candidate’s for the Accreditation of previous learning, and of modifying the way social and medical-social institutions work as well as the way actors participate in them
