Chakib, Ahmed. "Élites religieuses et pouvoir politique : essai sur l'énonciation du politique au Maroc". Bordeaux 2, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992BOR21007.
Texto completoThis study comes within the scope of historical sociology. Through this methodological orientation, we have tried to examine the modes by which the social and political order was created in Islam (the Arabic east) and its impact on the initial form of politics in morocco and their development. The political history of this country can the better understood if we take into account this impact. Yet, the thing which characterizes best Moroccan history ist the permanency of what C. Geertz calls the "saint warrior" model. Thus, we have tried to bring to the fore this model by stressing the specificities of the religious elites (sacred lineages, zaouia and sharifisme) and their relationships with the political power. These elites who will hold a dominating part until the advent of colonialism and the disappearing of the makhzen whose authority they recognized. But after some uncertainties about the political future of the country during the struggle for independence, the rising power of the monarchy now confirms the continuity of the geertzian model

Texto completoThe apparition of democracy in Benin has contributed to the emergence ofreligious and traditional elites on the public stage. These elites have seized theopportunity that the institutional state transformations have offered them to organizethemselves into lobbies and to try to improve their social situation. However, theirambitions go beyond their traditional domains, and these religious and traditional eliteswish to participate in the development of public policy and of the Beninese state. Thisambition underlines the probability of the development of a joint or plural managementof cities, notably on a local level, between political, religious and traditional elites. Also, although the position of the Beninese state concerning religious and traditionalchieftainships has varied since the declaration of independence and the state recognizesthat these chieftainships have a certain importance, these the status of these socialinstitutions remains unclear. However, the country’s successive governments andpolitical elites can have an instrumental conception of these relations. It is also worthnoting that the religious and traditional elites do not remain passive concerning the stateand political elites’ actions. There can be several different kinds of response to thequestion of how these political, religious and traditional elites come together, responseswhich imply certain relational configurations which have an impact on the Beninesestate

Texto completoThis work aims at approaching politics in Lebanon in its praxis by questioning the actions of a specific category of actors : the Lebanese institutionalized religious elites. Addressing their political positioning means examining to what extend the confessional boarders can be transcended in order to reach a common goal : preserving the current social order.First, it is thus necessary to question the resources available to these actors in order to establish and legitimate their involvement in the political field. These resources take roots in a historical heritage, which varies from one community to the other, but take place in a structural and legal framework, which tends to harmonize the positional practices and to allow to the institutionalized bodies the means to frame the Lebanese society. The charismatic resources, which vary from one leader to the other, are not to be laid aside. This study of the positional practices involves not only to lay eyes on the vectors carrying the discourses, but also to observe the temporality and the frequency in which said discourses fit. This political discourse is characterized by a blatant uniformity in both rhetoric and vocabulary used by the dominants. Advocating for a cause, thus linked to the very identity of the group, shaping the communication strategies, but also preserving a necessary balance with the political field, in terms of proximity, are so many norms that determine the legitimacy of the produced discourse. This positioning is not without posing some challenges for the institutionalized religious actors who have to deal with the competition of outsiders who offer a less uniform, and thus more attractive discourse, but also with the potential divisions within the religious field, and the oppositions with the political actors. Dealing with these potential competitions implies a common, joint or concomitant action, in system, in order to produce a discourse by the elites and for the elites, promoting the safekeeping of the social order.By avoiding the communitarian and clientelistic reading grids through the observation of the positioning of specific actors who mainly possess symbolic capitals, we are led to shape the constitution of a new field of the conservative elites, gathering not only the religious actors but also a part of the political ones working in order to preserve the social order

Texto completoThe conquest of the Middle East by the Seljuks in the 5th/11th century marked the installation of new non-Arab military powers in the region. The Zankid principality of Mosul was born out of the slow disintegration of Seljuk power in the 6th/12th century, whose characteristics it inherited.Better than any other regime,it illustrates the political recomposition of the Middle East into independent principalities. Under the Zankids, Mosul became a major political center, at the crossroads between Seljuk Iran, Abbasid Iraq and Syria disputed by the Franks. The genesis of this new politic entity was the fruit not only of military conquest, but also of the devolution of authority fromt he Seljuk sultan to Atabeg prince Zankī. The study focuses on the eventful history of the principality, its political culture marked by the ḫidma system, the development of religious life on a regional scale and the scholarly and religious mobilities which connected Mosul to the other major cities of the region, as well as the urban and economic revival which the Ǧazīra experienced under the impetus of the Zankid power

Texto completoConversion to Christianity gains a new importance in Late Antiquity from that of Constantine. Trough the example of the Italian Elites in IVth and Vth c. A. D. , the cross-analysis of multiple sources allows a practical historical survey. Once clarified the meaning, nature and limits of this conversion, the author examines its progress among leading aristocratic families, then within each Italian province, and gives the major chronological and geographical trends. Next the author shall describe its process, and outline a kind of typology. Literary and iconographical representations also reveal its subjects and witnesses' own conceptualisation. Finally, appear conversion's immediate consequences : on one hand, through baptism, the entrance to the Church of an aristocracy, with its practices and ideals ; on the other hand, that of Christianity in aristocratic life, with fairly light changes, except in the case of asceticism choice
Guetta, Alessandro. "La philosophie religieuse d'Elie Benamozegh". Paris, EPHE, 1993. http://www.theses.fr/1993EPHEA006.
Texto completoThe thesis deals with a case of "cultural adaptation", in the 19th century. It is about the Italian rabbi of Moroccan origin Elijah Eenamozegh (1823-1900), a cabbalist by education and a philosopher by calling. He had to cope with the ideology of progress and Hegelian idealism, two secularisation inclined trends. The notions of history, progress, dialectics, are analysed by him with conceptual instruments drawn mainly from kabala; but basically, his thinking has a lot in common with the "moderate" catholic thinkers of the time, such as the Italian Gioberti and the Frenchmen Lamennais and Ballanche. Benamozegh's linguistics too, has a double inspiration: kabala and the "philosophical philology" of Giambattista Vico (17th-18th cent. )

Texto completoThis research, which aims at depicting and analysing a large of the population of the Apt area (Vaucluse, Provence) we have chosen to label as "notables", is articulated around four parts : in the first one, methodology, sources and framework, we study the documents sources (either manuscript or printed) upon which we have based our research, and the problems of methodology we have encountered when dealing with those documents; we also set the geographical boundariues (the area around the city of Apt such as it appears in the documents) and the chronological boundaries (the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) and we justify our choice, before spotting and listing the external signs of notability, the ways used so as to achieve and hold on to this notability. In the second part, the notables of the apt area, we lay stress on the vertical fractures which split the different categories of notables (real or would-be nobility, lawyers, health-care professions, bourgeois, merchants, city and village notables). Third, in the religions, we deal with the horizontal fractures and solidarities which appear through our examining the secular clergy, the regular clergy, the valdese heretics, the protestants and the jews who have converted to catholicism. In the fourth part, we intend to study the ways of life and characteristic behaviours of the notables in the apt area so as to point out the homogeneous demeanours of the notables. In additions, we supply the reconstitution of many remarkable lineages

Texto completoThis PhD thesis analyses the cathedral chapter of Barcelona and its members at the end of the 15th century. This institution proves to be a major urban actor. Beyond their religious powers, bishops and canons proved to be closely involved in the history of Barcelona. Their functions grant them lands, which turn them into important landlords in the city and its surroundings. The canonicate gives them access to the "ecclesiastical arm" of the Crown of Aragon’s political institutions such as the Diputació del General de Catalunya and the Corts. Their social origins integrate them into the networks of personal relations that structure the urban oligarchy: they are fully part of the ruling elite of Barcelona and they occupy a very specific place there, because of their belonging to the Church. This situation places them at the junction of power networks, sometimes antagonistic and sometimes allied: those of the Church, those of the municipal political elite, and those of the family groups constituting the oligarchy. At the end of the Catalan Civil War of 1462-1472, Barcelona, main city of Catalonia, undergoes profound socio-political transformations: an official list of the patricians is established, the municipal government opens to the nobility and undertakes several economic recovery measures after the disturbances caused by the war. The study shows that the cathedral chapter, fully integrated with the ruling elite of the city, has to play a real role in the public life of the city during this period
