Current use of electronics has been growing rapidly. The trend is creating huge environmental impacts during manufacture of electronic goods and at the end of life. Alternative manufacturing and disposal techniques are required.
Circuits in Plastic (CiP) manufacturing is designed to address these issues. Circuit components are placed in a plastic substrate, conductive tracks are screen printed and the circuit is completed by thermally bonding a cover sheet over the circuit. The circuits are disassembled by mechanical means. While the process requires much less energy and produces minimal waste, the process must be reliable.
Mechanical reliability and thermal stability of electronic circuits is important in electronics. Tensile tests conducted on CiP circuits showed the electrical connection remained intact during an extension of 3%. The test was conducted at the laboratory ambient temperature of 21°C. Thermal simulation of the steady state temperature distribution of an integrated circuit for the CiP shows little temperature difference (less than 5°C) between CiP and traditional surface mounted devices. The experimental work showed CiP circuits are functional at high operating temperatures (60°C). CiP was not tested across the standard range of -55°C to 150°C. Such tests are only possible if the glass transition temperature of the plastic substrate is not exceeded.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)

This dissertation proposes the implementation of a new electronic document management system (EDMS) to assist a United States pharmaceutical company in the filing of an electronic or "virtual" drug submission to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The goal of this EDMS was to reengineer the process of producing pharmaceutical submissions by creating a digital document repository providing a single point of reference and control for all document versions, thereby decreasing the cycle time of business-critical documents circulating among departments and between the company and the FDA. Another objective was to clarify the document standards that form the basis for the "compound" document management architecture of this emerging technology (ET) by incorporating object oriented technology.
The project management approach was used to define requirements, maintain funding continuity and evaluate progress. A project manager served as the integrative force throughout the project, and he selected a project team composed of people from the path of critical document production. The project team selected the EDMS that met all the technical requirements, price and an intuitive and user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI). A pilot project using a discrete set of documents tested this ET.
The success of this project was judged on testing the usability and effectiveness of the GUI of the EDMS in 16 participants and shortening the cycle time of business critical documents within the company. Critical success factors included the availability of immediate benefits such as the direct access to different file formats from a common digital document repository offering version control and an audit trail of documents via workflow, the ability to search the company's knowledge base, improved internal communication, and the reusability of information by all process members. Test results and post implementation feedback from users demonstrated that the EDMS pilot project was the path to the electronic submission. A quicker time to market of pharmaceutical products plus a greater market share for the company are the anticipated longer-term business deliverables of this ET. The major innovation is that knowledge workers will now have the means to create an electronic submission by processing the documents electronically instead of manipulating physical documents.

The capacitated lot-sizing problem (CLSP) is a core problem for successfully reducing overall costs in any production process. The exact approaches proposed for solving the CLSP are based on two major methods: mixed-integer programming and dynamic programming. This thesis provides a new idea for approximating the inventory cost function to be used in a truncated dynamic program for solving the CLSP. In the proposed method, by using only a partial dynamic process, the inventory cost function is approximated, and then the resulting approximate cost function is used as a value function in each stage of the approximate dynamic program. In this thesis, six different algorithms are developed for the CLSP, based on three different types of approximate dynamic programming approaches. The general methodology combines dynamic programming with data fitting and approximation techniques to estimate the inventory cost function at each stage of the dynamic program. Furthermore, three main algorithmic frameworks to compute a piecewise linear approximate inventory cost function for the CLSP are provided. The first approach integrates regression models into an approximate dynamic program. The second approach uses the information obtained by a partial dynamic process to approximate the piecewise linear inventory cost function. The third approach uses slope-check and bisection techniques to locate the breakpoints of the piecewise linear function in order to approximate the inventory cost function for the CLSP. The effectiveness of the proposed methods are analyzed on various types of CLSP instances with different cost and capacity characteristics. Computational results show that approximation approaches could considerably decrease the computational time required by the dynamic program and the integer program for different CLSP instances. A general model of music mixing is developed, which enables a mix to be evaluated as a set of acoustic signals. A second model describes the mixing process as an optimisation problem, in which the errors are evaluated by comparing sound features of a mix with those of a reference mix, and the parameters are the controls on the mixing console. Initial focus is placed on live mixing, where the practical issues of: live acoustic sources, multiple listeners, and acoustic feedback, increase the technical burden on the mixing engineer. Using the two models, a system is demonstrated that takes as input reference mixes, and automatically sets the controls on the mixing console to recreate their objective, acoustic sound features for all listeners, taking into account the practical issues outlined above. This reduces the complexity of mixing live music to that of recorded music, and unifies future mixing research. Sound features evaluated from audio signals are shown to be unsuitable for describing a mix, because they do not incorporate the effects of listening conditions, or masking interactions between sounds. Psychophysical test methods are employed to develop a new perceptual sound feature, termed the loudness balance, which is the first loudness feature to be validated for musical sounds. A novel, perceptual mixing system is designed, which allows users to directly control the loudness balance of the sounds they are mixing, for both live and recorded music, and which can be extended to incorporate other perceptual features. The perceptual mixer is also employed as an analytical tool, to allow direct measurement of mixing best practice, to provide fully-automatic mixing functionality, and is shown to be an improvement over current heuristic models. Based on the conclusions of the work, a framework for future automatic mixing is provided, centred on perceptual sound features that are validated using psychophysical methods.

Manufacturers are increasingly looking at ways to reduce operating costs through energy
savings. While research has been done to identify energy usage throughout a facility--such as
lighting, computers, heating and cooling--very little research has been done on reducing the
energy consumption of manufacturing equipment. Sample literature review shows the bulk of
research on equipment is for tip energy, the energy when a tool makes contact with a work piece.
This excludes the energy of all the machine’s background processes: motors, pumps, fans, etc.
Several models have been created to predict the energy usage of a machine including both the tip
energy and the energy of the background processes; however, these models are experimental
laboratory studies. The purpose of this thesis is to collect and analyze real-time data of
manufacturing equipment in a production setting. Real-time data is important to understand
energy consumption at the machine level and the product level. This thesis reports on a method
to collect and analyze real-time manufacturing equipment energy data for a simple part. It also
reports on the use of that data to validate the uplci method to estimate the energy consumed for a
part using three uplci’s: turret punch uplci, brake forming uplci and drilling uplci. A data logger
recorder was connected to each machine to record the energy usage as it produced parts. This
data was then broken down into energy modes and analyzed. The results for each machine
showed how the machine utilized energy as it produced parts. The real-time data did not validate
the uplci calculations; however, the method to collect the real-time data was proven and shown
to be easily repeatable by manufacturers. This research provides a solid method for
manufacturers to use to identify areas to reduce their energy costs through improved production

A production system is a system where the raw materials are converted to finished products. A production system is classified in to two types based on the products processed namely single product production system and multi-product production system. The products in any production system would be in either value added or non-value added state. This research focuses on reducing the non-value added state in multi-product or complex production system by analyzing the bottlenecks. A bottleneck machine causes blocking or starving of parts in the system thereby increasing the non-value added time and reducing the system performance. Bottlenecks can be mitigated by control strategies such as buffer allocation and capacity addition. In order to mitigate the bottlenecks, the location, source and type of bottleneck in any system has to be identified. This research uses multiple metrics in order to identify the bottleneck and its type. Based on the metric values, the control strategies are implemented by the developed heuristics such as buffer allocation based on qualitative characteristics, capacity addition based on highest utilization and economic analysis based on sensitivity analysis. Buffers are inventory held in between machines to avoid stockout of parts. When a
company has large buffer quantities between machines the inventory holding cost increases.
Reducing the amount in a buffer increases the chance of stockout and hence will have a direct
impact on the throughput of the line. Hence there is a need to maximize the throughput of the
production line for a minimum quantity of buffers carried between machines.
In large volume manufacturing, homogeneous unreliable serial parallel production lines
are typical. For this line, a method is developed to identify the buffer allocation that maximizes
the throughput of the line with a constraint on the maximum buffer size that can be held in the
line. The developed method is implemented in case studies to identify buffer allocation that

Criminals are becoming increasingly involved in computing activity and connectivity, but
practitioners in the criminal justice field do not seem to be keeping pace with crime in a
computing context.
Being comfortable with the technology that underpins the Information Age is a non-negotiable
skill for those who have to unravel and bring twenty-first century crimes to book.
Chapter two of this study therefore sought to serve two purposes. The first aim was to
acquaint the reader with the exceedingly complex technologies involved in computers and
networks. The second aim was to clarify the technical context and terminology typical of the
collection of electronic evidence.
South Africa signed the Cybercrime Convention in November 2001. At present, the
Cybercrime Convention is the only existing internationally accepted benchmark, inter alia, for
the procedural powers aimed at the collection of electronic evidence. The main objective of
this study was to consider whether the South African search and seizure, production and
preservation devices need to be augmented and/or aligned so as to be on par with the
devices proposed in the Cybercrime Convention. This objective was served in two ways.
Firstly, an exposition of the requirements, scope, conditions and safeguards of the domestic
and transborder search and seizure, production and preservation mechanisms proposed by
the Cybercrime Convention was provided in chapter three of this study. Secondly, an
exposition of the domestic and transborder international search and seizure, production and
preservation devices available in the current South African legislative framework was given in
chapter four of this study. A comparative analysis was done between the South African
catalogue of criminal procedural search and seizure, production and preservation devices
compared to those set out in the Cybercrime Convention. Where any alignment or
augmentation of the South African devices was found to be necessary, this study identified
these intervention areas. The findings and recommendations based on this comparative
analysis were set out in chapter seven of this study.
In considering any alignments and/or augmentations required in respect of the South African
domestic search and seizure, production and preservation mechanisms, the application of
the equivalent mechanisms directed at electronic evidence used in the United States of
America and England were investigated in chapters five and six respectively. The lessons

Magister Artium - MAThis thesis is an exploration and analysis of the ways in which we might use varying forms of Black thought, theory, and art to think Blackness anew. For this purpose I work with electronic music from Nigeria and Detroit between 1976 and 1993, as well as with works of science fiction by W.E.B. Du Bois, Samuel Delany, Ralph Ellison, and Octavia Butler. Through a conceptual framework provided by theorists such as Fred Moten and Kodwo Eshun and the philosophical work of Afrofuturists like Delany, Ellison, Butler, and Du Bois, I explore the outer limits of what is possible when doing away with a canon of philosophy that predetermines our thinking of Blackness. This exploration also takes me to the possible depths of what this disavowal of a canon might mean and how we work with sound, the aural, and the sonic in rethinking the figuring of Blackness. This thesis is also be woven together by the theory of the Black Radical Tradition – following Cedric Robinson and Fred Moten specifically. At the centre of this thesis, and radiating outwards, is the assertion that a set of texts developed for a University of the West – Occidental philosophy as I refer to it in the thesis – is wholly insufficient in attempting to become attuned to the possibilities of Blackness. The thesis, finally, is a critique of ethnomusicology and its necessity for a native object, as well as sound studies, which fails to conceptualise any semblance of Black noise.

In this thesis, two methods of creating multi-layer porous films for DSSCs are examined. They have been designed as possible alternatives for screen printing in laboratory settings. The same precursor chemicals used for screen printing are employed in both the alternative methods, which are designated multi-layer doctor-blading and stamping. Both alternatives are simple and inexpensive, costing $0.86 and $0.89 per DSSC, respectively. Multi-layer doctor bladed cells can be made with up to three layers, while stamped cells can be made with up to eight.
The cells produced by these two methods are compared to a sample screen printed cell, with mixed results. The multi-layer doctor bladed cells exhibit lower current densities than a screen printed cell, 68.0 A/m2 compared to 68.9 A/m2. The best performing stamped cell demonstrates a higher current density than the screen printed reference, reaching 82.7 A/m2. It also has a slightly higher efficiency. However, the results from the stamped cells are inconsistent. Algal farming in open ponds can be done with simple technology and low capital expenditures. However, in relatively uncontrolled ponds the likelihood that microbial contamination that could affect algal yield is high. We are interested in understanding natural contamination as an ecological process to better control the trajectory of microbial community assembly. Nannochloropsis salina was grown in small outdoor open ponds (100 L; 10 cm deep) through three cycles of batch culture using a simplified brackish growth medium. Time-course samples were monitored via pigment analyses, and direct microscopic counts. Extracted metagenomic DNA was subjected to touchdown PCR for amplification of 16S rRNA genes with universal bacterial primers and 18S rRNA genes with algae-specific primers, both using GC-clamps. PCR products of similar lengths were separated by melting characteristics using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Contamination of the open ponds by algae was not observed over three two-week batch culture cycles, however, contamination by bacteria was observed. Salinity and pH were likely major factors behind limited algal contamination. DGGE bands from bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplifications were excised, eluted, reamplified, and sequenced, revealing a diverse consortium of bacteria including Aeromonas, Loktanella, Marinobacter, and Pseudomonas. Most of the bands were seen on third and fourth day of the batch culture. As the culture progressed, the number of bands seen with DGGE decreased. Band migration was measured and relative front values were calculated. A 2% overall window was used to analyze how closely one band is associated with another. Overall there were 22 individual bands designated as novel based on relative front values. A dendrogram of relatedness was created to compare time-course samples from triplicate ponds, supporting the conclusion that community assembly was more of stochastic than deterministic in nature.Thesis (M.S.)--Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of Biological Sciences

Through analysis, observation, critical listening, interviews and creative practice, this study explores how techniques of appropriation via digital music sampling are used for electronic musical composition and production. Included is an examination of literature and creative work focused on the Golden Age of Hip-Hop that explores early sampling processes and techniques. Through original compositions and an exegesis, the study provides unique and significant contributions to the field including the identification of four approaches to the design and construction of sample-based composition and associated techniques for achieving them using contemporary music technologies. The Golden Age of Hip-Hop is presented as a historical period of musical significance, not only for defining new genres and sub genres of music, but because of the influencing factors that emerging technologies had on new compositional processes and outcomes. Highlighting the lineage of digital sampling and appropriation in the Golden Age with contemporary approaches to electronic music composition is at the core of this study. The historical analysis is supported by the implementation of the identified approaches using contemporary techniques that further extend practices of digital sampling and appropriation.
I was initially attracted to the topic of this having come as a session saxophonist and record producer heavily influenced by the hybridisation of jazz and hip-hop. Both of these genres were influential factors in my musical development, with modern-day approaches to electronic music production heavily influenced and driven by the use of digital sampling and appropriation in order to construct musical works An overview of the art of remixing and how it serves as an apprenticeship within the realms of electronic music production, offers detailed insights into compositional approaches and habits of artists and producers when implementing digital samples of metric and non-metric timing to form a new work within electronic music production. Remixing is also supported by three legal parameters often associated to digital music sampling and appropriation, outlining how fragmented literal similarity, de minimis and the fair use doctrine have been developed to protect artistry, whilst allowing sampling through the democratisation of sampling technologies to flourish and challenge the assumptions of ownership, authorship and creativity. An in depth analysis of four case studies allow for an historical understanding of how digital sampling and appropriation formed the basis of some of the most influential recordings to have come out of the Golden Age of Hip-Hop and have continued to influence approaches to composition within modern-day electronic music production. In conjunction with the analysis of cases studies an overview of digital sampling technologies in the form of the Akai MPC 60 and the E-mu Systems SP-1200, offer great insight into the affordances emerging and developed technologies contributed to the compositional process, thus resulting in such formidable and influential outcomes.
Supported by the influencing factors of Hirsch’s theory of post-memory and Perchard’s theory of musico-cultural influences; the outcome of musical analysis resulted in the 4 approaches that can be defined as Lyrical Fragmentation, Cultural appropriation, Constructionist Collage and Improvised Remix. An exploration through composition outlines my use of metric, non-metric, temporal and textural variance, sonic sculpting techniques, and the exploitation of characteristics of sampled source material. These were motivating factors to create works based on the 4 approaches to digital sampling and appropriation. Finally, after ethical clearance (Musician Interviews GU Ref No: QCM/06/15/HREC) from the university, a survey was developed and distributed to select respondents asking them to answer questions related to the ideas in this study.
The data collected from the surveys presents as one of the most outstanding characteristics of this study. It validates the scope and concepts of this study whilst comprehensively outlining individual approaches to digital sampling and appropriation a compositional practice. This data further elaborates on the 4 approaches identified in this study and offers scope for further research.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)

One of the main causes for degrade in the performance of a production line is bottleneck machine. To improve system performance, bottleneck (BN) is one of the critical factors that need to be addressed. Most of the researchers focus on long term bottlenecks in the system. From other researches, it is evident that detection and elimination of short term BNs is more efficient than long term BNs. Till now, there is no generic method to identify bottlenecks in production lines with and without buffer. Proposed inactive duration method for identification of BNs detects both short term and long term bottlenecks.
In production lines, bottlenecks can be classified into buffer bottlenecks and machine bottlenecks. Machine BNs are mainly due to variability in the system. There is always strong relationship between variability and machine BN. Due to dynamic nature of manufacturing lines, there will be frequent shifting of BN between different machines. In this research, BN characteristics are proposed to analyze the critical nature of BN and BN shifting. In production lines with buffer, buffer bottlenecks are eliminated by placing optimal buffer size before each machine. This thesis presents a two step heuristic procedure for optimal buffer size determination. Case studies were conducted for both production lines with optimal buffer and without buffer. Biodiesel production by microalgae is typically driven by photosynthetic light harvesting. Production in open ponds is hampered by high water requirements and contamination. Photobioreactor are highly engineered systems with high capital costs. Both approaches are limited by a requirement for high surface area-to-volume ratios that promote light penetration. The current study avoids these issues by growing algae heterotrophically. If algae are grown in the dark, existing bioethanol facilities may be used to co-produce, or readily be changed to produce, biodiesel. Here we fed Chlorella kessleri grown in the dark with the same corn and sorghum hydrosylates used for bioethanol production. Chlorella cultures also were grown heterotrophically in the dark on pure sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose and a mixture of three sugars) in shake-flasks or continuously sparged and stirred bioreactors. The rate of growth in heterotrophic cultures was comparable to light-grown autotrophic cultures and mixotrophic cultures supplemented with exogenously added sugars in the light. Strong heterotrophic growth was observed for Chlorella maintained heterotrophically on corn mash, sweet sorghum juice, and sorghum mash prepared by hydrolysis of bulk grains. When these bioethanol feedstocks were added to a final concentration of 1% sugar, growth rates were comparable to pure sugar substrates. Biodiesel production was low in these experiments since no attempt was made to promote nitrogen starvation. The current study suggests that algal biodiesel production may be possible during heterotrophic growth in the dark on sugar feedstocks already in use by the biofuel industry. Post-production facilities deal with large amounts of digital video, which presents difficulties when tracking, managing and searching this material. Recent research work in image and video analysis promises to offer help in these tasks, but there is a gap between what these systems can provide and what users actually need. In particular the popular research models for indexing and retrieving visual data do not fit well with how users actually work. In this thesis we explore how image and video analysis can be applied to an online video collection to assist users in reviewing and searching for material faster, rather than purporting to do it for them. We introduce a framework for automatically generating static 2-dimen- sional storyboards from video sequences. The storyboard consists of a series of frames, one for each shot in the sequence, showing the principal objects and motions of the shot. The storyboards are rendered as vector images in a familiar comic book style, allowing them to be quickly viewed and understood. The process consists of three distinct steps: shot-change detection, object segmentation, and presentation. The nature of the video material encountered in a post-production fa- cility is quite different from other material such as television programmes. Video sequences such as commercials and music videos are highly dy- namic with very short shots, rapid transitions and ambiguous edits. Video is often heavily manipulated, causing difficulties for many video processing techniques. We study the performance of a variety of published shot-change de- tection algorithms on the type of highly dynamic video typically encoun- tered in post-production work. Finding their performance disappointing, we develop a novel algorithm for detecting cuts and fades that operates directly on Motion-JPEG compressed video, exploiting the DCT coeffi- cients to save computation. The algorithm shows superior performance on highly dynamic material while performing comparably to previous algorithms on other material.

The specimens, which must be in the shape of tuning forks, are resonated at high amplitudes. This is achieved by attaching small, powerful, samarium-cobalt magnets to the ends of the tynes, enabling them to be driven efficiently by a "U"-core electromagnet. A small, piezoceramic strain gauge provides a method of picking up the vibrations. To maintain resonance, the signal is used in a positive feedback loop, which incorporates an analogue multiplier to provide AGC. This also keeps the amplitude constant at any desired level, throughout the duration of an experiment.

This research project examines how video games can be programmed to generate the sense of the digital sublime. The digital sublime is a term proposed by this research to describe experiences where the combination of code and art produces games that appear boundless and autonomous. The definition of this term is arrived at by building on various texts and literature such as the work of Kant, Deleuze and Wark and on video games such as Proteus, Minecraft and Love. The research is based on the investigative practice of my work as an artist-programmer and demonstrates how games can be produced to encourage digitally sublime scenarios. In the three games developed for this thesis I employ computer code as an artistic medium, to generate games that explore permutational complexity and present experiences that walk the margins between confusion and control. The structure of this thesis begins with a reading of the Kantian sublime, which I introduce as the foundation for my definition of the digital sublime. I then combine this reading with elements of contemporary philosophy and computational theory to establish a definition applicable to the medium of digital games. This definition is used to guide my art practice in the development of three games that examine different aspects of the digital sublime such as autonomy, abstraction, complexity and permutation. The production of these games is at the core of my research methodology and their development and analysis is used to produce contributions in the following areas. 1. New models for artist-led game design. This includes methods that re-contextualise existing aesthetic forms such as futurism, synaesthesia and romantic landscape through game design and coding. It also presents techniques that merge visuals and mechanics into a format developed for artistic and philosophical enquiry. 2. The development of new procedural and generative techniques in the programming of video games. This includes the implementation of a realtime marching cubes algorithm that generates fractal noise filtered terrain. It also includes a versatile three-dimensional space packing architectural construction algorithm. 3. A new reading of the digital sublime. This reading draws from the Kantian sublime and the writings of Deleuze, Wark and De Landa in order to present an understanding of the digital sublime specific to the domain of art practice within video games. These contributions are evidenced in the writing of this thesis and in the construction of the associated portfolio of games.

Objective. The main goal of this research is proposing a novel method of onset detection for Self-Paced (SP) Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) to increase usability and practicality of BCIs towards real-world uses from laboratory research settings. Approach. To achieve this goal, various Sound-Production Related Cognitive Tasks (SPRCTs) were tested against idle state in offline and simulated-online experiments. An online experiment was then conducted that turned a messenger dialogue on when a new message arrived by executing the Sound Imagery (SI) onset detection task in real-life scenarios (e.g. watching video, reading text). The SI task was chosen as an onset task because of its advantages over other tasks: 1) Intuitiveness. 2) Beneficial for people with motor disabilities. 3) No significant overlap with other common, spontaneous cognitive states becoming easier to use in daily-life situations. 4) No dependence on user’s mother language. Main results. The final online experimental results showed the new SI onset task had significantly better performance than the Motor Imagery (MI) approach. 84.04% (SI) vs 66.79% (MI) TFP score for sliding image scenario, 80.84% vs 61.07% for watching video task. Furthermore, the onset response speed showed the SI task being significantly faster than MI. In terms of usability, 75% of subjects answered SI was easier to use. Significance. The new SPRCT outperforms typical MI for SP onset detection BCIs (significantly better performance, faster onset response and easier usability), therefore it would be more easily used in daily-life situations. Another contribution of this thesis is a novel EMG artefact-contaminated EEG channel selection and handling method that showed significant class separation improvement against typical blind source separation techniques. A new performance evaluation metric for SP BCIs, called true-false positive score was also proposed as a standardised performance assessment method that considers idle period length, which was not considered in other typical metrics.

This work is concerned with research in the field of electronic publishing and, more particularly, of electronic books. It concentrates on an analysis of the stages of development of an electronic book from the acquisition of the source material to the actual use of electronic books, with particular attention to the interface design issues. The main objective of this research is to demonstrate the appropriateness of adopting the paper book metaphor for representing electronic books, which are specifically designed to be parts of an electronic library. In addition, these electronic books are produced semi-automatically using a flexible publishing environment. A model for an electronic book (hyper-book) and an environment which supplies tools for generating electronic books (hyper-book builder) have been defined and successively developed. Hyper-books are produced by importing electronic texts (in SGML or ASCII format) into an empty template, and by applying a number of tools in order to provide appropriate layout and reader services. Hyper-books incorporate hypertext features (e.g. history facilities and links), paper book features, and some other computer facilities (e.g. search functions). Design principles for hyper-books have been partially deduced from paper publishing and from experiments with electronic books. An application in the environmental domain (in particular, in the area of Global Change) was developed and used in order to evaluate the hyper-book system. The objectives of the evaluation were mainly to assess system usability and utility. An evaluation conducted by assigning a number of tasks to two different groups of subjects (computer experts and computer non-experts) has demonstrated that both groups achieved a good performance; therefore, computer expertise does not represent a significant aid in order to perform better or execute tasks quickly. These results lead to the conclusion that the system is easy to learn and use by everyone, therefore it is appropriate to employ the book metaphor.

The development of tools and services for the realisation of the Semantic Web has been a very active field of research in recent years, with a strong focus on linking existing data. In the field of music information management, Semantic Web technologies may facilitate searching and browsing, and help to reveal relationships with data from other domains. At the same time, many algorithms have been developed to extract low and high-level features, which enable the user to analyse music and audio in detail. The use of semantics in the process of music production however is still a relatively new field of research. With computer systems and music processing applications becoming increasingly powerful and complex in their underlying structure, semantics can help musicians and producers in decision processes, and provide more natural interactions with the systems. Audio effects represent an integral part in modern music production. They modify an input signal and may be applied in order to enhance the perceived quality of a sound or to make more artistic changes to it in the composition process. Employing music information retrieval (MIR) and Semantic Web technologies specifically for the control of audio effects has the potential to be a significant step in their evolution. Detailed descriptions of the use of audio effects in a music production project can additionally facilitate the description of work flows and the reproducibility of production procedures, adding an additional layer of depth to MIR. We substantiate the hypothesis that the collection of audio related metadata during the production process is beneficial, by comparing the results of various feature extraction techniques on audio material before and after the application of audio effects. We develop a formal Semantic Web ontology for the domain of Audio Effects in the context of music production. The ontology enables the creation of detailed metadata about audio effects implementations within the Studio Ontology framework for use in music production projects. The ontology contains inter-linkable classification systems based on different criteria constituting an interdisciplinary classification. Finally, we evaluate the ontology and present several use cases and applications, such as adaptive audio effects using and creating semantic metadata.

In music production, along with other creative endeavors, there is a recurring phenomenon of loss of motivation during the process of creating. Within the community of music producers, there is no unified picture of what leads to lack of motivation, and little academic research has been done on motivation in music production specifically. However, when it comes to motivation in creativity, there is some research which suggest that intrinsic motivators are the primary regulators of motivation in creativity. Whether extrinsic motivators are detrimental to intrinsic motivation or can be used to facilitate intrinsic motivation, as well as what kind of extrinsic motivators that may facilitate intrinsic motivation, is still debated. This thesis sets out to discover what facilitators and barriers to motivation can be found in the music production process of electronic music producers, and whether this knowledge can be applied to products for music production. To examine facilitators and barriers in music production, a phenomenology-inspired, bottom-up methodology of semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis is employed on professional and enthusiast music producers. The results show that while baseline intrinsic motivators such as the will to create are vital for motivation, there are a lot of extrinsic factors at play in sustaining motivation through music production as well. This thesis is presented with product companies that make products for electronic music production in mind, and through the results of this thesis, numerous suggestions on what to think about when designing for motivation in music production are presented.

The photocatalytic water splitting reaction showed to be a promising process to obtain renewable and clean energy, but the efficiency reached in this process is still low and must be improved to be viable. Considering this, the research on improving the efficiency of photocatalysts has attracted a strong interest in the past last years. Cerium oxide (CeO2−, 0 < x < 0.5) is a material recently investigated as a possible photocatalyst to obtain H2 from H2O. In this work, cerium oxide nanoparticles with high surface area (104 < S < 201 m2/g), high pore volume (32 < V < 132 mm3/g) values, wide range of diameter (2 < d < 90 nm) and O vacancies population (0.05 < x < 0.46) were applied to the H2 production photocatalytic reaction. The nanoparticles presented activity of up to 10 times higher than the commercial cerium oxide standard. UV-Vis, X-ray Diffraction, X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared measurements were performed aiming to elucidate these results and to determine the main structural and electronic properties that can improve the H2 production photocatalytic reaction. It was obtained that the band gap energy depends on the nanoparticle synthesized and can be as low as 2.73 eV. The Ce 4f orbital occupation and the structural disorder presented by the nanoparticles is directly related with the band gap energies obtained. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to obtain the relation between the band structure (DOS) and the O vacancy population in order to explain the dependence of the band gap energy with the Ce 4f orbital occupation. Moreover, the O vacancies population at the surface have a very different effect depending on the presence or absence of mesopores, where a lower O vacancy population at the surface is better (worse) to the photocatalytic activity in the presence (absence) of mesopores. Furthermore O vacancies population at the surface plays a more fundamental role on the photocatalytic activity than the band gap energies for the samples presenting mesopores. The results allowed shedding light on the improvement of the properties of cerium oxide nanoparticles applied to optimize the H2 production photocatalytic activity.

Taiwanese citizens are generally lacking in health care knowledge. Recently,phonocardiogram (PCG), electrocardiogram (ECG) and pulmonary sound analysis techniques have become sophisticated, indicating good preparation for nursing and health care construction in an aging society. This research proposesan application of a simple electronic stethoscopethat facilitates digitalization of medical information. This paper compares phonocardiographicand electrocardiographic signals, and combines them with pulmonary sound analysis results to obtain an appropriate parameter. This measurement method is a non-invasive technique that involves recording audio information with a simple electronic stethoscope, then applying digital filtering techniques to inhibit noise, and finally combining current analysis methods to promote high acceptance of the recorded information among medical personnel. Future popularization of the techniques in this study could help promote medical care quality in remote areas.

Cell Production System is designed for high product variety and low volume production and now applied by many manufacturers. How to apply the cell production system in an electronic assemble Company, which run with free flow system, is the major study in this research. The production line took up a lot of space and need a lot of time to complete the Work. We designed a process model for the apply of cell production and measured several key performance indexes. And we compare this key performance with free flow system to analyze the advantage of cell production method. As results the key performance indexes improved. Inventory control always keeps as a key functional role in any product Style Or Production System .A Suitable Inventory Can Increase The System’s Reliability And Provide with better customer’s serve . It is especial important in manufacturing business. The manager people have to consider the outbound such as marketing competitor and internal condition when to perform inventory policy. Basically marketing demands is variable always. There is gap between the theoretical model and practically in normal. For example we usually assume to the probability of demanding is as normal distribution but in actually it is not. How to control the parameters that will affect the level of inventory and to perform inventory effectively is a huge challenge for manager .for especially in electronic industry that have variety kinds and small lots production. For those each item have different inventory control and service level and also the new items comes out face out frequently. If still use traditional way to manage each item. There are still some difficulties. Therefore, this study is focused at electronic component industry production inventory control and try to build an inventory module that can meet needs. The marketing demand-pull ＆ dynamic buffer management concepts that comes from TOC can be used in this fields. There is much differences between traditional and TOC method no matter in performance evaluation or results. Through the inventory replenish management’s system and based on actually we get computer simultaneous .To get verify the TOC method can have better effectiveness than traditional way. And also show the lead time is an important factor that will affect inventory management performance to provide and mention the manage people.
