THE PURPOSE. Consider the issue of the presence of distortions in the form of sinusoidal voltage and current in autonomous electrical power systems with electrical propulsion systems, built on the principle of the unified electric power system. Compare the results of the study of voltage distortion for electrical power systems with electrical propulsion systems of various structures and give recommendations for their application.METHODS. For research, unified electric power systems with DC electrical propulsion systems on the Yeysk ferry and alternating current on the asymmetric icebreaker Baltika are considered. The possibilities of programming with frequency control of modern drives of rudder propellers with AC motors are analyzed.RESULTS. Oscillograms of voltages and currents of generators were obtained using thyristor converters and inverters to control electrical propulsion systems in various modes. Significant ripples and distortions of the sinusoidal voltage and generator currents were noted when thyristor converters are used to power DC propulsion electric motors. Also, small deviations from the sinusoidal form of the ship's network voltage were recorded when inverters were used to control AC propulsion motors as part of rudder propellers.CONCLUSION. The issue of ensuring the quality of electricity produced in autonomous electrical power systems of sea vessels is of great relevance and importance. To ensure the best results, it is advisable to use azimuthing podded drive with AC electric motors, the rotation speed of which is implemented by inverter frequency converters with a DC link.

В настоящее время на судах и объектах морской индустрии широко внедряется энергосберегающее электрооборудование, что позволяет добиться резкого снижения расхода электроэнергии и массогабаритных показателей оборудования, существенно расширяет функциональные возможности электротехнических комплексов и систем, приводит к улучшению эксплуатационных характеристик. Однако использование новейших энергосберегающих технологий, основанных на нелинейных элементах, и коммутация электрооборудования приводит к ухудшению качества электрической энергии в судовой электроэнергетической системе. В то же время, растет число потребителей, предъявляющих к качеству электроэнергии повышенные требования. В итоге, работа судовых энергокомплексов может отличаться от расчетной, а в ряде случаев становится аварийной. В работе приведены результаты экспериментальных исследований показателей качества электрической энергии в судовой электроэнергетической системе учебного парусного судна «Крузенштерн». Представлены результаты лабораторных исследований на физической модели судовой электростанции с источниками электромагнитных помех, обоснованы организационные и технические решения по снижению уровня электромагнитных помех в судовых электроэнергетических системах. Nowadays, energy-saving electrical equipment is widely introduced on ships and maritime industry facilities. It leads to a decrease in power consumption, weight and dimensions of equipment, significantly expands the functionality of electrical complexes and systems, and provides improvement of operational characteristics. However, the use of the latest energy-saving technologies based on non-linear elements and the switching of electrical equipment leads to a deterioration in the quality of electrical energy in the ship's electric power system. At the same time, the number of consumers with increased requirements for the quality of electricity is growing. As a result, the operation of ship power complexes may differ from the normal one, and in some cases it becomes emergency. The paper presents the results of experimental studies of electric power quality indicators in the ship's electric power system of the sail training ship "Kruzenshtern". The results of laboratory studies on a physical model of a ship power plant with sources of electromagnetic interference are presented, organizational and technical solutions to reduce the level of electromagnetic interference in ship power systems are substantiated.

Resumen
Fusion power concepts that are heated by electrical devices for the purpose of producing high levels of electrical output are in effect electric power amplifiers. Three systems are considered: A hypothetical electric power version of the ITER experiment, the ARIES-1 fusion reactor design, and a modified version of ARIES-1 with stainless steel structural material. We find that an ITER power plant with a reasonable electric power conversion system would produce no net electric power at its target energy amplification factor of 10. The ARIES-1 conceptual power plant, as conceived, would have an energy amplification of 22 and an electric amplification of 6. If stainless steel were substituted for the SiC composite material assumed, the ARIES-1 electric power amplification would drop to roughly 3. We conclude that practical fusion power plants will likely require a near-ignition operating mode and qualified high temperature materials as prerequisites for commercial viability.

Resumen
Reducing electricity losses in electrical networks is a complex complex problem that requires significant capital investments necessary for optimizing the development of electrical networks, improving the electricity accounting system, introducing new information technologies in marketing activities and managing network modes, training personnel and equipping them with means of testing measuring devices etc. In reality, in recent years, in connection with the inclusion of normative losses in the tariff for electric energy transmission services, a dangerous trend of adapting these norms to actual losses has emerged. The article analyzes the occurrence of power losses in electrical engineering systems and electrical networks of various voltage classes. Special attention is paid to the so-called excess losses, which are not taken into account during design and operation. These losses occur in insulators, linear fittings, current-limiting reactors, electricity meters, windings of current and voltage transformers, etc. Excessive losses of electricity in electric networks are direct financial losses of electric power companies. Savings from reducing losses could be directed to technical re-equipment of networks; staff salary increase; improvement of the organization of electricity transmission and distribution; increasing the reliability and quality of electricity supply to consumers. Unaccounted losses reach approximately 1% of the total amount. This fact must be taken into account. Because currently we are talking about millions of losses.

This paper investigates the effect of the load factor of frequency converters and thyristor converters on electrical power quality. Recommendations for reducing the influence of higher harmonics and switching overvoltages on the characteristics of electrical power are provided. Higher harmonics were measured by a PKK57 complex device for controlling electrical parameters and a digital oscilloscope of the Tektronix TDS 2024V type. Impulse switching overvoltages were recorded by an active resistance divider of the DNEK-10 type and the above-mentioned oscilloscope. The obtained data were processed by the Loginom 6.4 software and the methods of mathematical statistics. The lower threshold level of the load factor of frequency converters and thyristor converters was set equal to 0.8, at which the sinusoidal distortion of voltage curves correspond to the RF standard of electrical power quality. The suppression degree of higher harmonics from the 5th to 17th frequency by power transformers with a capacity of 250–6,300 kV. A ranged from 95 to 45%. The use of the ‘transformer–converter–electric receiver’ system as applied to the power supply systems of mining and processing enterprises was substantiated. It was shown that electric motors with a capacity of up to 2,500 kW inclusively require protection against switching overvoltages. Conventional RC-absorbers based on RC-circuits connected to the terminals of electric motors are shown to be highly efficient for protecting electric motors against switching overvoltages. Thus, the quality of electrical power in power supply systems of mining and processing enterprises in Russia can be ensured by frequency converters and thyristor converters with a load factor of 0.8 or greater. Provided that the transformer capacity does not exceed 1,000 kV. A, a more efficient and less expensive ‘transformer–converter–electrical receiver’ system is recommended. Effective protection of electric motors of up to 2,500 kW inclusive can be provided using the proposed conventional RC absorber, which maintains the overvoltage rate at a level not exceeding 1.7.

Abstract The recent emergence of power electronics equipment raises the possibility of implementation of DC shipboard electrical distribution systems. Several investigations on the effectiveness of DC shipboard electrical power distribution systems have proven that it is more profitable than AC distribution systems both in technical and economical aspect. However, known investigations are still limited to the system in ship with electric propulsion, which the consumption of electric power is enormous. The current study investigates the technical performance of both distribution systems in a non-electric propulsion ship, especially in the aspect of power losses. Both of the original AC distribution systems in a 17,500 DWT tanker ship and its equal DC distribution systems are modelled in a computer simulation program. The electric power flow simulation for both models are performed with the data of electric load during operating conditions, to compare the power losses in the distribution systems. The results show that the DC distribution systems has fewer drop voltage than its AC counterpart.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the damage rate of overhead power transmission lines (OPL) in medium-voltage electrical distribution networks of the Irkutsk region. The established International Indices that determine the level of reliability of the functioning of electric networks are considered, and information on the compliance of the condition of electric networks in Russia with these indices is analyzed. Analytical information on the damage rate of elements of these networks and their causes in Europe, America, and Russia is presented. The emphasis is placed on the fact that the most common damage is characteristic of overhead power lines, especially 6–10 kV lines. As an object of research, two branches of the Irkutsk electric grid company (IEC) were taken, one of which provides electricity to rural consumers, the other — mainly to consumers residing in the territory of the city Irkutsk. The characteristics of these electric networks, their territorial location and basic technical data are presented. To conduct analytical monitoring of the level of reliability of overhead power transmission lines, logs of disconnection of the Eastern and Southern electric networks of the IEC over a long-term period were used. On the basis of this information, tables of failures and their consequences in the studied electrical networks were compiled for monthly average data over the period under examination for various causes of damage. To plot time diagrams of the parameters under examination, computer programs were compiled in the Matlab system, the use of which made it possible to obtain visualization of changes in failures for various reasons for the electrical networks under consideration. The information on the time of power supply interruptions in these networks, as well as the amount of electricity underutilized by consumers during these interruptions and its cost are analyzed. It is shown that in the electric networks under consideration, most of the power failures are related to the territorial dispersion of these networks, and the low level of equipment controls and insufficient qualification of operating personnel, as evidenced by the significant number of failures for unknown reasons. Besides, a significant part of the failures is due to damage to the overhead line wires, switching equipment and the effect of wind load. Recommendations for improving the condition of power transmission lines and a number of measures aimed at improving the level of reliability of power supply are presented.

For the first Ukrainian electric locomotives of DE1 type with the system of DC electric traction, the values of reactive power after Budeany, Fryze, and also the differential, integral and generalized reactive powers have been determined. Some measures on reducing its consumption by the DC electric rolling stock have been suggested.

In this paper, the technological situation in the world was analyzed, which contributes to a change in the production process of various organizations, the key role of the electric power industry was established in many industries. The article indicates the main problems that need to be solved in order to provide high-quality and reliable power supply to consumers. As a solution to these situations, it is proposed to put into operation a digital monitoring system of electric power parameters. In the presented article, a plan is laid for the development of a methodology for organizing digital monitoring systems in the electric power industry, positive effects are noted from the application of this approach. In addition, the advantages of digital monitoring systems are indicated, which will affect the cost of electrical energy for industrial enterprises, as well as ordinary consumers. The presented work indicates the current situation in the market of electric power companies that are interested in developing a digital monitoring system and are ready to invest in this direction. The performed analysis proves the relevance of developing such a system and allows us to outline possible ways for its implementation.

AbstractThe article addresses in a complex way the problem of cooperation between the on-board electric power sources of an aircraft with its on-board electric network. The authors paid special attention to conditions related to correct switching of the on-board electric power sources. Structural protection of the electric power sources against harmful impact of loads, and of the loads against incorrectly operating sources, as well as certain methods to counteract such phenomena, are discussed. Exploring these relations will enable the user to undertake actions which can reduce the failure rate of the on-board electrical power network, and ensure power supply to the electrical loads under all flight conditions. Their correct operation determines correct operation of the on-board electrical power network. The authors tried to discuss all the problems in the most universal way possible, so the deliberations presented here could be helpful in analyzing defects in various aircrafts.

The power electric distribution systems (PEDS) possess a great dynamics of development. Thanks to this phenomenon in the power electric distribution systems (PEDS) the probability of apparatus of asymmetrical regimes increase monotonously. As a result of this reliability of the functioning of the power electric equipment installed in the electric knots changes. The asymmetrical regimes in the power electric distribution systems (PEDS) accompanied by the short circuit current are a function of a row determinate is a vague factor of probabilistic nature. Coming from it follows that the investigation of the influence of the asymmetrical regimes accompanied by the current of the short circuit on the reliability of the Power Electric Distribution Systems (PEDS) is one of the most important problems of the development the Power Electric Distribution Systems. The short circuit currents influence the structural and functional reliability of distribution networks and at the reliability of electrical equipment installation. The dynamics of changes in the levels of short circuit currents in electrical networks depends on the rate of change of the re-recovering voltage at the short circuit point on the power supply side and on the load side, as well as on the magnitude and rate of power change at the short circuit point on the power source side and on the load side.

This paper develops a two-stage stochastic program and solution procedure to optimize the selection of seismic retrofit strategies to increase the resilience of electric power systems against earthquake hazards. The model explicitly considers the range of earthquake events that are possible and, for each, an approximation of the distribution of damage experienced. This is important because electric power systems are spatially distributed and so their performance is driven by the distribution of component damage. We test this solution procedure against the nonlinear integer solver in LINGO 13 and apply the formulation and solution strategy to the Eastern Interconnection, where seismic hazard stems from the New Madrid seismic zone.

Abstract Improvements in battery technology make electric vehicles more and more suitable for the use as electricity storages. Many benefits could be achieved by using electric vehicles for storing electricity in their batteries. This paper talks about the idea of electric vehicles as electricity storages in electric power systems. The idea has a great number of supporters, but also a significant part of the professional community believes that is unfeasible. This paper is not classified in either side and strives to give a realistic picture of this idea. For this purpose, findings from papers published in scientific journals are mainly used. There is also some information from websites, mainly for some technical issues. Partly, the opinions of the authors are present. Specificities of EVs and EPSs that enabled the birth of this idea are explained along with proposed concepts through which the idea can be implemented. Keeping with the vehicle to grid concept, issues about the implementation of the idea are considered. Achievements in the practical realization of the idea are also presented.

This paper discusses the electrical architectures adopted in wind turbines and its impact on the harmonic flux at the connected electric network. The integration of wind electric generators with the power grid needs energy processing by power electronics. It shows that different types of wind turbine generator systems use different types of electronic converters. These cars are more environmentally friendly, because those operate only with electric energy (this article does not deal with the source of electric energy). The design of electric drive systems is very difficult and complicated task: the electric, thermal and mechanical parameters are very important during the design process. The task is given: it must be designed to reach the most efficient drive system with a low cost. This article deals with the current semiconductor trends and properties, investigates the current electric car drive systems (semiconductor design perspective) and deals with the future trends.

Resumen
This article discusses the study of problems of optimal control for electric power systems. The numerical solution of optimal control problems for complex electric power systems using an iterative algorithm is shown. Also considered are issues of solving the optimal control of a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations in two different cases. The proposed solution methods follow the principle of continuation of extremal problems based on sufficient conditions for optimality of V. F. Krotov. A special case of optimal control problems is considered. Numerical experiments showed sufficient efficiency of the implemented algorithms. The problem of optimal motion control of a two-system electric power system is graphically illustrated in the proposed numerical example.

Reliable electric power systems serve customer loads without interruptions in supply voltage. Electric power generation facilities must produce enough power to meet customer demand. Electrical energy produced and delivered to customers through generation, transmission and distribution systems, constitutes one of the largest consumers markets the world over. The benefits of electric power systems are integrated into the much faster modern life in such extent that it is impossible to imagine the society without the electrical energy. The rapid growth of electric power distribution grids over the past few decades has resulted in a large increment in the number of grid lines in operation and their total length. These grid lines are exposed to faults as a result of lightning, short circuits, faulty equipment, mis-operation, human errors, overload, and aging among others. A fault implies any abnormal condition which causes a reduction in the basic insulation strength between phase conductors or phase conductors and earth, or any earthed screens surrounding the conductors. In this paper, different types of faults that affected the electric power distribution grid of selected operational districts of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western region of Ghana was analyzed and the results presented. Outages due to bad weather and load shedding contributed significantly to the unplanned outages that occurred in the medium voltage (MV) distribution grid. Blown fuse and loose contact faults were the major contributor to unplanned outages in the low voltage (LV) electric power distribution grid.

The use of electrical receivers with a non-linear load on ships significantly affects the electric power characteristics. The main devices that reduce the distortion of the sinusoid of current and voltage in electrical networks are active, passive and combined filters. There are considered the main types and principles of active filters operation, shown the current methods for detecting a distortion and forming a compensating effect by active filters. Using the active filters for electric drives of reciprocating mechanisms with an uneven, but periodic predictable load on the shaft is demonstrated. The operation of such devices in the ship electrical power system worsens the electric power characteristics (e.g. high iTHD, harmonic components). The effectiveness of using an active filter operating on a perturbation from a reference signal for electric drives of reciprocating compressors has been theoretically grounded. There has been presented an algorithm for operation on a perturbation determining the spectrum of the selected interharmonic distortion and presenting it in the form of a Fourier series to create a compensating effect. Application of the algorithm helps increase the speed of the control system, eliminates temporary errors and simplifies the operation of the system. The range of active filters operation according to this algorithm is found limited due to a necessary periodic load or fixed interference. The control software for a three-phase active filter was designed by using the algorithms. The software project is presented in the MATLAB/Simulink mathematical modeling environment. A specific feature of the software using a memory block to organize the calculation of the compensation pattern for harmonic distortion and using the algorithms for generating a compensating signal in the frequency domain. The hardware modeling is considered and the firmware of the board is made. The interface, code and results of the software work are given. It has been inferred that the software effectively controls the power elements of the active filter with current feedback.

In order to implement reliable and flexible power management among energy sources, a decentralized power management approach for electrical power systems (EPSs) in the more electric aircraft (MEA) is studied. Considering the increased use of electrical power for various functions, the performance of MEA would be determined by the design and operation of the EPS. By using a virtual impedance that includes both a resistive term and an inductive term, autonomous power sharing is realized. Because of the frequency dependence in the virtual impedance, different power sharing ratios between steady state and transient state can be considered. Not only the operation of various power sources is coordinated without supervision of a centralized controller, but also the operation profile of each source can be adjusted to meet output characteristics of each source. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a series of simulations that consider various virtual impedance configurations were conducted. The proposed approach contributes to a higher level of operational flexibility, while enabling reliable and cost-effective management of MEAs.

The object and purpose of this study is generation of electric power for electric propulsion of ship and vessels; methods and problems, state-of-the-art and trend analysis are presented. Materials and methods. The main principles and methods of electric power generation using various generating and power conversion systems are briefly discussed. Their advantages and disadvantages are identified based on publication in this field. Main results. Achievements in the modern methods of power generation for ships, as well as ways of its transformation are highlighted. A detailed analysis of the state-of-the-art and trends in ship electric power generation is given. Various options of engines and generators are considered, including advanced types. Their characteristics are thoroughly analyzed based on the international publications. Conclusion. Conclusions are formulated regarding achievements and current problems in ship electric power generation systems.

This paper addresses the model for power shortage estimation in electric power systems. The model’s main component of methodology for analysis of electric power system (EPS) reliability that has been developed at the Energy Systems Institute, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy Sciences. The methodology is based on the Monte-Carlo method. Quality and implementation time of reliability analysis depend on realization of the model. The model is implemented in the computational software for electric power systems reliability analysis. The history of evolution of the model for power shortage estimation and mathematical properties of the model are discussed. The results of the state-of-the-art studies of the model for power shortage estimation in EPS are presented. The model for power shortage estimation in EPS with quadratic power losses in power lines is considered. Algorithms of the interior point method with quadratic approximations of constraints applied for realization of the model are discussed. Results of experimental studies of the algorithms are presented.
