Resumen
The research presented in this thesis aims to improve our knowledge regarding the impact of privatisation and deregulation of public service type infrastructure industries. In recent years, Australia's industry reform policies have critically relied on rapid deregulation of major utilities such as telecommunication, gas and electricity. Although several industries have been deregulated in the last two decades, our understanding regarding the impact of deregulation on residential electricity market is still developing. In order to accomplish the research, about 400 residential customers were surveyed and their electricity consumption patterns (ECP)were monitored by installing special electronic meters. The findings are discussed in detail. As an implication to policy and practice there is an urgent need for a nation-wide standard, reshaping the practices of the electricity marketing and establishing a time-dynamic ECP monitoring system. Another important implication concerns the well-founded theories in micro-economic literature. This research has established that the price of the commodities and services charged by public service type utility suppliers should not be left entirely to the market forces concerned with demand - supply equilibrium. There is an urgent need to understand the role of different socio-economic segments in contributing to the economic efficiencies of public service type assets. More efficient segments should be equitably rewarded for their contributions rather than penalised perhaps due to the lack of their bargaining power.

Rocha, Patricio. "Cap-and-Trade Modeling and Analysis for Electric Power Generation Systems". Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3316.

Texto completo
Resumen
Cap-and-trade is the most discussed CO2 emissions control scheme in the U.S. It is a market-based mechanism that has been used previously to successfully reduce the levels of SO2 and NOx emitted by power generators. Since electricity generators are responsible for about 40% of the CO2 emissions in the U.S., the implementation of CO2 cap-and-trade will have a significant impact on electric power generation systems. In particular, cap-and-trade will influence the investment decisions made by power generators. These decisions in turn, will affect electricity prices and demand. If the allowances (or emission permits) created by a cap-and-trade program are auctioned, the government will collect a significant amount of money that can be redistributed back to the electricity market participants to mitigate increases on electricity prices due to cap-and-trade and also, to increase the market share of low-emission generators. In this dissertation, we develop two models to analyze the impact of CO2 cap-and-trade on electric power generation systems. The first model is intended to be used by power generators in a restructured market to evaluate investment decisions under different CO2 cap-and-trade programs for a given time horizon and a given forecast in demand growth. The second model is intended to aid policymakers in developing optimal CO2 revenue redistribution policies via subsidies for low-emission generators. Through the development of these two models, our underlying objective is to provide analysis tools for policymakers and market participants so that they can make informed decisions about the design of cap-and-trade programs and about the market actions they can take if such programs are implemented.

Kunzler, Wesley Mont. "Fiber Optic Sensor Interrogation Advancements for Research and Industrial Use". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2608.

Texto completo
Resumen
Spectrally-based fiber optic sensors are a rapidly maturing technology capable of sensing several environmental parameters in environments that are unfitting to electrical sensors. However, the sensor interrogation systems for this type of sensors are not yet fit to replace conventional sensor systems. They lack the speed, compact size, and usability necessary to move into mainstream test and measurement. The Fiber Sensor Integrated Monitor (FSIM) technology leverages rapid optical components and parallel hardware architecture to move these sensors across the research threshold into greater mainstream use. By dramatically increasing speed, shrinking size, and targeting an interface that can be used in large-scale industrial interrogation systems, spectrally-based fiber optic sensors can now find more widespread use in both research labs and industrial applications. The technology developed in this thesis was demonstrated by producing two advanced interrogators: one that was one half the size of commercially available systems, and one that accelerated live spectral capture by one thousand times – both of which were operated by non-developers with little training.

Resumen
Stochastic Petri nets (SPNs) and extensions are a popular method for evaluating a wide variety of systems. In most cases, the interesting measures regarding the system's characteristics can be defined at the net level by means of reward variables. Depending on the measures, these net-level reward models are solved either by first generating a state-level reward model or by directly generating paths from the net-level description. In this thesis, we propose algorithms for the generation of state-level reward models as well as for directly obtaining solutions from net-level reward models when the net-level reward models are specified as stochastic activity networks (SANs) with "step-based reward structure." Moreover, we propose algorithms for computing the expected value and the probability distribution function of a reward variable at specified time instants, and for computing the probability distribution function of reward accumulated during a finite interval. The interval may correspond to the mission period in a mission-critical system, the time between scheduled maintenances, or a warranty period; whereas the time instants may be critical instances during these intervals. The proposed algorithms avoid the construction of state-level representations and the memory growth problems experienced when applying previous approaches to large models. Furthermore, we study the effect of workload on the availability and response time of voting algorithms. Voting algorithms are a popular way to provide data consistency in replicated data systems. Many models have been made to study the degree to which replication increases the availability of data, and some have been made to study the cost incurred in maintaining consistency. However, little work has been done to evaluate the time it takes to serve request, accounting for server and network failures, or to determine the effect of workload on these measures. In this thesis, we use stochastic activity networks (SANs) to study the effect of work load on availability and mean response time of two variant models of a replicated file system to maintain data consistency, one using a static voting algorithm, the other using a dynamic voting algorithm.

Yao, Wenjin. "Approaching Chineseness : investigating the cultural transfer of behavioural factors in and through Chinese industrial design". Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2015. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/1695/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This PhD research by project is for designers investigating relations between culture and design through an experiential perspective of Chi- nese culture in terms of developing a new understanding of ‘Chineseness’. ‘Chineseness’ in my work, can be re-mapped as a form of communication that deals with Chinese culture in design. It is not just along with historical stereotypes, nor a remote copy of other countries’ successful cultural trans- fers, but rather should be inseparable from the radical social phenomena and design culture already emerging within contemporary China. Through a series of design projects, my research is ultimately allowing Chineseness to be less implied and instead, to be made manifest, in terms of what behav- iours over symbolism and decoration. New knowledge is articulated through exploring my understanding and its shifts during my approach to re-map Chinese cultural elements in design and search for the meaning of ‘Chineseness’. This research remarks the stereotypes, generalisations and categorisations when designers deal with cross-cultural design from both non-Chinese and Chinese angles. The thesis comprises three parts. The first part is a contextual review of cultural elements and appropriate methods. The second part explores a systematic approach to reflecting Chineseness from various cultural an- gles. These action-research method-led projects describe three ways of ex- ploring the transfer of Chinese culture into design: symbolic, behavioural and political/philosophical. They culminate in an enabling developmental structure through which designers can deal with Chinese cultural com- plexity in design. The third part sees two final projects that reflect back and re-evaluate what Chineseness could be. The thesis contributes a three-layer structure that reflects Chinese cultural elements into design through meth- ods and analysis of values in practice. Additionally, for the readers sympa- thetic with a systematic design approach or cultural identitarianism, this work addresses a view of critical understanding for facing Chinese culture in design.

Resumen
The solar industry has grown considerably in the last few years. This larger scale has introduced more problems as well as possibilities. One of those possibilities is analyzing the data coming from the sites that are now being monitored, and using the information to answer a variety of questions. We have four questions which are of prime importance identified in this thesis: 1. Can data from customers be trusted? 2. Can we use data from existing sites to determine which sites need the most improvement? 3. Can we implement a location-based algorithm to reduce the amount of false positives for performance, or other alarms? 4. Can we improve upon the current predicted power algorithm? We find that not only can we answer these questions definitively, but the improvements found are of significant value. Each of these items represents an important question that either directly or indirectly translates into increased revenue and engineering improvements for the solar industry as a whole.

Hu, Yao. "The Modeling, Analysis and Control of Resilient Manufacturing Enterprises". UKnowledge, 2013. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/ece_etds/15.

Texto completo
Resumen
The resilience of manufacturing enterprises is an important research topic, since disruptions have severe effects on the normal operation of manufacturing enterprises, especially as manufacturing supply chains become global. Although many case studies have been carried out to address resilience in organizations, a systematic method to model and analyze the resilience dynamics in manufacturing enterprises is not well developed. This study is intended to conduct research on quantitative analysis and control for resilience. After reviewing the literature addressing resilience, a modeling framework is presented to characterize the resilience of a manufacturing enterprise responding to disruptive events, which includes inventory ow between enterprise nodes, different costs, resource, demand, etc. Each node within the network is represented as a dynamic model with associated costs of production and inventory. This mathematical model is the foundation of quantitative analysis and control. With this model, an optimal control problem is formulated, by which the control can be solved to achieve minimum cost. Several different types of systems are defined and analyzed in this work. We develop the approach of aggregation to simplify the network structures. The study is mainly focused on two categories of network systems: serial network systems and assembly tree network systems. The analysis on these two categories covers two conditions: in discrete time domain without considering capacities, and in continuous time domain with considering capacities. The methods to determining optimal operations are developed under different conditions. In the serial network systems analysis, a practical case study is introduced to show the corresponding method developed. Finally, the problems are discussed for future research. Based on the results of these analyses, we present optimal control policies for resilience. Our method can support the analysis of the impact of disruptions, and the development of control strategies that reduce the impact of the disruption.

Suchanek, Richard Donald III. "Breakdown Voltage Performances of Aluminum and Copper Conductor Wire Under Compression Stresses". TopSCHOLAR®, 2016. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1606.

Texto completo
Resumen
In the global, competitive market of energy transformation, increased operational expenses and depletion of raw materials have resulted in companies pursuing alternate materials to reduce consumer costs. In electrical applications, energy is transformed using materials with high electrical conductive properties. The conductive material used to transmit a signal is called conductor wire and is comprised of any material that has the ability to move charged particles from one point to another without propagation or delay. The conductor wire in many applications is encapsulated in epoxy resin called enamel. The enamel is the insulation system that provides necessary dielectric clearances to prevent voltage leakage. The most common form of energy transformation is the electric motor. Both copper and aluminum conductor wire are commonly used in electric motors, but copper is preferred due to thermal and electrical properties. However, there is a significant economic incentive to convert to aluminum conductor wire. Limited white papers are available comparing the performances of the two materials; the research is limited to physical and electrical performances of the raw material and does not take into considering the insulation. The conductor wire, which includes the insulation, is susceptible to damage during the manufacturing process and is an inherent risk if not fully understood. During the blocking process, the conductor wire is pushed and compressed into lamination slots. This process changes the conductor wire outer diameter to accommodate void spaces within the lamination slots. The percentage of slot area occupied by the conductor wire is known as slot fill. The higher the slot fill, the more wire occupying the available space. The higher the slot fill, the more force required to fill the slots. High slot fill motor designs provide a performance advantage with little associated cost. The more wire pressed into the slot, the higher the potential efficiency gains. However, high slot fill motors are more susceptible to damage. The study is designed to evaluate and measure the durability of aluminum and copper conductor wire under simulated compression stresses. Utilizing this information, electric motor manufacturers can push current design limits without affecting conductor wire quality and reliability.

Resumen
The development of a numeric simulation for predicting the performance of an Ocean Current Energy Conversion System is presented in this thesis along with a control system development using a PID controller for the achievement of specified rotational velocity set-points. In the beginning, this numeric model is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink® and it is used to predict the performance of a three phase squirrel single-cage type induction motor/generator in two different cases. The first case is a small 3 meter rotor diameter, 20 kW ocean current turbine with fixed pitch blades, and the second case a 20 meter, 720 kW ocean current turbine with variable pitch blades. Furthermore, the second case is also used for the development of a Voltage Source Variable Frequency Drive for the induction motor/generator. Comparison among the Variable Frequency Drive and a simplified model is applied. Finally, the simulation is also used to estimate the average electric power generation from the 720 kW Ocean Current Energy Conversion System which consists of an induction generator and an ocean current turbine connected with a shaft which modeled as a mechanical vibration system.

Resumen
Power conservation has become a high priority to South African industries due to recent environmental assessments and electricity price hikes. This research aims to demonstrate to Industry the many simple and cost effective ways to increase their industrial efficiency with simple modifications, as well as making them more aware of common assembly errors that significantly increase power consumption. This has been accomplished with the design, construction and testing of a test rig capable of producing the desired test results which simulate Industry usage. A test rig was required to test certain energy efficient equipment. This dissertation contains an explanation of the tests required, as well as how they were conducted. These test requirements directed the design outcomes of the test rig. Due to the variety of equipment to be tested, and the accuracy required, the test rig had to be fully adjustable. The design process is explained in this dissertation, along with relevant theory with regard to the testing procedures. The testing procedures were designed to be as accurate as possible. The setup equipment and procedure is briefly explained to ensure an understanding of the capabilities of the test rig. This dissertation contains the results obtained from testing a variety of couplings, belts and motors under different conditions. The results obtained show the difference between the efficiency of a standard motor and that of a high efficiency motor. The efficiency comparison of the Poly V TM, Poly Chain® and SPB V-belts showed very distinct advantages and disadvantages of each belt. The coupling testing was conducted under conditions of misalignment, and resulted in distinct differences in the efficiencies of each coupling at different degrees of misalignments. The couplings tested were the Fenaflex®, the Quick-Flex®, and the Fenagrid® coupling. All results obtained were analyzed and discussed in the relevant sections. The results obtained showed that the high efficiency motor is significantly more efficient than the standard motor at full load, although at low loading, the motor efficiencies were very similar. The coupling tests showed the negative effects misalignment has on the efficiency of the Quick-Flex® and Fenagrid® coupling as well as the capability of the Fenaflex® coupling to withstand the effects of large misalignments without significant efficiency loss. v The belt testing revealed the advantages and disadvantages of each type of belt used. This showed that although the synchronous belt did not lose efficiency with decreased tension, it became unstable, and was difficult to keep on the pulley if not aligned correctly. The V-belts can handle low tension well. Prolonged use of the belts can cause them to stretch, lowering the tension into a “danger zone” that will cause the belts to slip. This slip can damage the belt and pulley. At the lower tension of the V-belt, although the efficiency increases slightly, the vibration of the slack side of the belt is significant, and can be dangerous as the belt could jump off the pulley. The Poly V TM belt has some of the advantages of the V-belt, except that it is unable to maintain its friction at low tension, as the belt width prevents it from being wedged into the grooves like the V-belt. The fluid coupling tests showed that the shock loading on a high inertia system can be significantly reduced with the aid of a fluid coupling. The reduced shock loading can reduce energy consumption, and increase the life of electric motors and the equipment that they drive by preventing excessive overloading.

Resumen
Agent-based modeling (ABM) is a relatively new tool for use in electric power market research. At heart are software agents representing real-world stakeholders in the industry: utilities, power producers, system operators, and regulators. Agents interact in an environment modeled after the real-world market and underlying physical infrastructure of modern power systems. Robust simulation laboratories will allow interested parties to stress test regulatory changes with agents motivated and able to exploit any weaknesses, before making these changes in the real world. Eventually ABM may help develop better understandings of electric market economic dynamics, clarifying both delineations and practical implications of market power. The research presented here builds upon work done in collateral fields of machine learning and computational economics, as well as academic and industry literature on electric power systems. We build a simplified transmission model with agents having learning capabilities, in order to explore agent performance under several plausible scenarios. The model omits significant features of modern electric power markets, but is able to demonstrate successful convergence to stable profit-maximizing equilibria of adaptive agents competing in a quantity-based, available capacity model.

Enterprise's financial situation has not only been considered as a critical issue to the enterprise and the public, but it also is an key point that affect the survival of each enterprise. Early and correct bankruptcy prediction could effectively reduce the lost of the enterprises and the correspondent investors, therefore the early-warning mode of the enterprise finance crisis was developed gradually. According to the literature review, it was known that there were plenty of the early-warning systems of enterprise finance crisis, but it prospect the model built and constructed and surpasses the traditional statistics model via the data mining, decision tree and neural network models were also well applied in the past among them, support vector machine which has good behavior on the effect rise in recent years and was used to build and construct the financial crisis model, literature review only emphasized the combination of different industries and tailor make the crisis model for them instead of individual and specific development to single industry. On behalf of the above complex and practical commercial challenges, this research aims to build and construct the electronic and traditional industries’ early-warning model individually with application of decision tree, neural network and support vector machine method to develop a prediction model suitable for electronic and traditional industries. This research also adopts the methods of importation variable of the adequacy to avoid possible effects of neural network which could reframe by improper variables, these methods includes the factor analysis, stepwise regression analysis and sensitive analysis together with a type neural network to build the model of constructing. This research wants to use to understand that bankruptcy prediction comparison between the electronic and traditional industries through different models constructed built. The results of the experiments are: 1. Sensitive analysis plus neural network are suitable for electronic and traditional industries. The accuracy rate is up to 82.5% for electronic industries to predict their financial crisis in the year before it happen, and it is up to 96.08% for the traditional industries. 2. Compare to the traditional industry’s early-warning model, this research which applied the methods of sensitive analysis plus neural network is better. It also shows that non- financial rate has important influence according to the final results. Moreover, compared to the electronic industry’s early-warning model, the accuracy rate is above the average level as well. 3. The research discover that the support vector machine is not the best choice. In addition, the accuracy rate of the support vector machine is controlled by the decision of the parameter, but it’s hard to find the best parameter. However, there are no problems in this respect to the sensitive analysis combine neural network. 4. Through the variable sieving of sensitive analysis, this research discovered that the electronic industry's most influential indexes are ‘non-operating revenue’ , ‘operating expenses rate’ and ‘inventory turnover’, and the traditional industry's most influential indexes are ‘liabilities ratio’ , ‘total assets growth rate’ and ‘supervisory board hypothecation rate’. Furthermore, it showed that the electronic industry has influenced by profitability, cost expenses, and management capacity, and the traditional industry has influenced by the debt paying capacity, growth rate, and corporate goverance.

Japanese electronic industry’s production system restructuring was accelerating since the 2008 global financial crisis, the risk management of industrial supply chain is getting much important after the 3.11 Earthquake, “asset-lite” and “fab-lite” are the keywords during this period and to equip a “business continuity plan” is becoming essential to the electronic component vendors. This research bases on the “innovation” of new production process, the externality of industry cluster and the developing industrial relationship of Taiwan and Japan to examine the restructuring of Japanese ICT industry. This research also discusses the recovery of broken supply chain which caused by the 3.11 Earthquake. Two restructuring facts of SONY TV production and Japanese semiconductor corporations endorse the EMS outsourcing and the asset-lite/fab-lite transformations, so this research would like to indentify the roles which Taiwan’s electronic enterprises can perform and to be embedded into Japan’s ICT industry. For the topics of 1.The cooperation strategies of Taiwan &; Japan’s semiconductor industry and 2.The global strategic alliance of Japan’s technology and Taiwan’s capital &; the capability of mass productions, this research gets to the conclusions by using the SWOT analysis which was supported from the seminar of “Taiwan’s SoC design win in Japanese brand names”. The conclusion of this research paper indicates that Taiwan’s semiconductor supply chain could be the complementary role &; risk management solution. And Japan’s ICT corporations could leverage the resources of Taiwan’s EMS through the strategic alliance.

Resumen
In this dissertation, I developed a unified complex network framework for environmental decision-making. I focused on complex network systems arising in the context of green logistics, including global supply chains, and electronic waste recycling. The framework that I developed is able to handle many decision-makers at the tiers of the networks, and enables the prediction of the flows of the materials between tiers as well as the prices at the tiers, along with the emissions generated, and the incurred costs and profits. I first developed a theoretical framework for supply chain networks with environmental concerns in the context of decision-making in the Information Age today. I allowed different decision-makers to weight the criteria (including the environmental ones) in distinct fashion. Subsequently, I generalized the original model to a global supply chain network model which included environmental criteria, electronic commerce, and risk management. I then developed an integrated reverse supply chain management framework that allows for the modeling, analysis, and computation of the material flows as well as the prices associated with the different tiers in the multitiered electronic recycling network. I also extended this model in order to deal with the environmental risk caused by hazardous material generated from the recycling processes. I assumed that the environmental risk due to hazardous material depends on the amount of residual hazardous material that is not extracted from electronic wastes by the processor as well as on the storage amount of hazardous waste that is not disposed yet by the hazardous material disposer. The models and computational methods were based on the methodologies of variational inequality theory for the study of the statics (cf. Nagurney (1999)) and projected dynamical systems for the dynamics (cf. Nagurney and Zhang (1996)).

The new global climate agreement “Paris Agreement” established in the Paris Conference of 2015 (COP21) took effect on November 4th, 2016, which follows the Kyoto Protocol to continue the climate actions after 2020. The contracting countries have agreed to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. In order to fulfill the proposal of zero emission specified in the agreement, they plan to prohibit complete the production and sales of gasoline vehicles and diesel vehicles, which is estimated to stimulate the growth of the global market of electric vehicle. In the future, the trend of electronic vehicles permeating the mass market is inevitable. However, the achievement of promoting the electronic vehicles in Taiwan is limited since the price of an electronic vehicle is high and the establishment of infrastructure for battery charging has not been completed yet. The market of the electronic vehicles, thus grows slowly. The main sales targets of the electronic vehicles are the organizations such as government institutions that may use the electronic vehicles as the government vehicles. Accordingly, the research aims at conclude the directions of the commercial patterns of electronic vehicle in different countries by analyzing the customer value proposition, profit formula, key resources and key procedure of these patterns. It refers to the commercial patterns of different countries and looks for the coordination between Taiwan’s electronic vehicle industry and the commercial pattern based on Taiwan’s governmental policies, the decrees and the relevant supports. It also seeks for the operation pattern that may create a win-win situation for the customer value and the manufacturer’s profit and for establishment of battery charging stations as the key resources and procedure to the expansion of the electronic vehicle industry. The battery charging stations may serve separately or cooperate with the service providers such as parking lots and gas stations to create the brand-new service and commercial pattern of strategic alliances.

Resumen
This thesis develops suitable approaches to conduct environment-related research in organisations, as well as systematic means for understanding the emergent phenomenon of ecological modernisation in industrialised societies. The study is organised in two distinct parts: While Part I deals with environment-related theories and practices in (and around) modern organisations, Part II situates such theories and practices in an analysis of the context of the European automobile industry. The research problem is defined through several stages. The research questions driving Part I are premised on the exploratory nature of the study, developed in an unfolding interplay between the review of the literature, the collection of secondary and (exploratory) primary data, and the analysis and interpretation of the data. As the initial question is answered by reviewing the literature and interpreting the primary and secondary data, another question arises from the process, which then requires further research. Part II of the study departs from a proposition based on ecological modernisation theory, that pro-active environmental practices in corporations are part of a broader emergent sociological phenomenon, typical of modern industrialised societies. It analyses a specific socio-technical context that, hypothetically, is undergoing such process - that of the European automobile industry. Hence, the development of Part II aims at answering the following principal research question: Why is the European automobile industry undergoing ecological modernisation? Analytically, the concept of automobile field is proposed to establish a link between the product (automobile) and the context embedding its systems of production and consumption (field). The exploratory character of the study implied that the most adequate research procedures were of a qualitative nature. A combination of grounded theory and reflexive methodology is used to orientate the overall research process, which introduces a novel approach for the triangulation of qualitative data. Together, the chapters forming Part II of the thesis answer the principal research question. The fundamental technologies of the current technological regime of the automobile, as well as the economic and environmental implications of this regime are analysed. Then, an analysis of selected pilot programs to develop and commercialise electric vehicles, as well as schemes for the management of end-of-life vehicles in the Western European context is developed. Through the interplay between data collection and analysis, the thesis designs an analytical framework, built upon contingent factors, as well as circuits of political ecology, that foster or inhibit ecological modernisation in the automobile field. The study showed that the auto industry has developed incremental technological innovations and practices that resemble the pre-requisites for ecological modernisation. Radical innovations, however, are more likely to be initiated by outsiders. The concepts inherited from the past and reproduced in the present practice of car design explains such a situation as one that imposes a specific set of technologies on car manufacturing that require high levels of investment in systems of production. Such design paradigm not only imposes high break-even points for most car models; they also result in vehicles with extremely low environmental performance and entail serious limitations for increasing recycling rates of non-metallic parts. The characteristics of ecological modernisation in the European automobile industry are used to evaluate whether this phenomenon is conducive to sustainable industrial development. As an implication of this analysis, the concluding chapter presents suggestions for the enhancement of ecological modernisation theory. Fallibility is proposed as both a source of reflection about the appropriation of knowledge and a principle that can be used for the definition of eco-modernising strategies and actions. The acceptance of fallibility as an immanent characteristic of human action is critical for the approximation of the countervailing theories of ecological modernisation and risk society. Finally, if ecological modernisation is expected to facilitate sustainable industrial development, radical technological innovations may be necessary. Such radicalism in technology may need, however, an incremental institutional reform of modern societies. Together, radical technological innovations and incremental institutional reform constitute the concept of radical reformism, which is suggested for enhancement of the ecological modernisation theory, as well as for the development of its normative programmes.

The Excellent Enterprise''s successful secret is always an important subject discussed by the enterprise operators and the managerial educational field. The scholars used to mention that the “Intangible Resources " have great influence to the organization, and suggest that the characteristic of successful enterprise should contain soft variable such as culture, leadership and so on. Among them, some of the text books and publication of entrepreneur emphasized that the mission is one of the key factors for organizational management. In the past research of how mission influences organization effectiveness, researcher used interview and statistical analysis as major research methods, however, if we use System Dynamics as another approach of research method to establish the enterprise model could present the process of how mission Influence organization effectiveness more specifically. The merit of System Dynamics Model is that all of organizational issue of the management process is dynamical complexity, non-linearity, however, System Dynamics Model simulation process may help the modeler understand the relationship between system structure and behavior, and the static system feedback diagrams will become dynamical “future laboratory". However, because of the soft variable lacking for specific index and method for measurement, it is still a challenge to put the soft variables in the Enterprise Model. This paper adopt System Dynamic as the research method to study how loyalty for mission of a leader in excellence enterprise influence organizational performance – taking Japanese Matsushita Electricity industrial Ltd. Company as the case company to analyze how the mission loyalty affect the soft variables of organization and produce the indirect influence to the organization. By collecting researches of Excellence Enterprise and information of Matsushita Electric Ltd. Company, we constructed the Matsushita Electric Ltd. Company’s System Dynamics Model, and put the soft variables in to model and run the simulation, find out the relationship between Excellence Mission and organizational performance. By discussing how the leader’s Mission loyalty affects the organizational performance indirectly, we can prove that soft variables in organizational business and the System Dynamics modeling cannot be neglected.

"Routing and Scheduling of Electric and Alternative-Fuel Vehicles". Doctoral diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.24799.

Texto completo
Resumen
abstract: Vehicles powered by electricity and alternative-fuels are becoming a more popular form of transportation since they have less of an environmental impact than standard gasoline vehicles. Unfortunately, their success is currently inhibited by the sparseness of locations where the vehicles can refuel as well as the fact that many of the vehicles have a range that is less than those powered by gasoline. These factors together create a "range anxiety" in drivers, which causes the drivers to worry about the utility of alternative-fuel and electric vehicles and makes them less likely to purchase these vehicles. For the new vehicle technologies to thrive it is critical that range anxiety is minimized and performance is increased as much as possible through proper routing and scheduling. In the case of long distance trips taken by individual vehicles, the routes must be chosen such that the vehicles take the shortest routes while not running out of fuel on the trip. When many vehicles are to be routed during the day, if the refueling stations have limited capacity then care must be taken to avoid having too many vehicles arrive at the stations at any time. If the vehicles that will need to be routed in the future are unknown then this problem is stochastic. For fleets of vehicles serving scheduled operations, switching to alternative-fuels requires ensuring the schedules do not cause the vehicles to run out of fuel. This is especially problematic since the locations where the vehicles may refuel are limited due to the technology being new. This dissertation covers three related optimization problems: routing a single electric or alternative-fuel vehicle on a long distance trip, routing many electric vehicles in a network where the stations have limited capacity and the arrivals into the system are stochastic, and scheduling fleets of electric or alternative-fuel vehicles with limited locations to refuel. Different algorithms are proposed to solve each of the three problems, of which some are exact and some are heuristic. The algorithms are tested on both random data and data relating to the State of Arizona.

Resumen
This study focuses on the viability of locating a company that manufactures high-technology products in South Africa. A small electronics manufacturing company called Nortech is used as a case study, and the results of the case study analysis provide an insight into the state of the high-tech electronics industry in South Africa. The economic models of Heckscher and others regarding factors of production, and the value-chain model of Porter as it related to the strategy of location of business activities, was used as a theoretical basis for the study. A theoretical model was constructed using these classical theories, modified to suit modern Knowledge-based economies, and this was used as a framework with which to analyse the case study. The case study of Nortech is presented by means of a discussion of the company history, mission, and vision, and an analysis of the product offering, competitive environment, and Research and Development skills. The focus throughout the analysis is on the relative advantages obtained through location, and the contribution of innovation and technical skills to the overall product. The context of the company within South Africa is discussed, with reference to the effect of national policy and infrastructure. The case study is evaluated within the framework of the theoretical model developed, and the relevance to the different product lines within the company. It was found that there were significant locational advantages related to high technical skills levels, flexible production methods and efficient value-chain structures. The sustainability thereof, in the light of decreased levels of national spending on Research and Development, and the continued loss of skills to foreign countries, remains a concern.

The development of information technology actuates the enterprises to alter their management and strategies. In result of that, knowledge increasingly becomes the main competitive element between enterprises in the 21st century, therefore the development of human resource has been doubly valued by its importance. The most common way for enterprises to develop human resource is to use moderate and proper training. The key factors of its success are determined not only on the manager''''s support and employees'''' cooperation but on the instructor’s consultation. Enterprises would launch on education and put their employees to use as an instructor while concerning the cost and extending the company culture. This research mainly studied the effectiveness of internal instructors and its relative factors within enterprises, and the main purpose of this study was to explore the conceptions of internal instructors and to discover what impacts they may have on the organization learning and training development. This was expected to enhance the degree of internal instructors’ importance being valued and employed by enterprises. Furthermore, to look into it and offer opinions when instructors are presented in an enterprise. Research date was collected by questionnaires and the research was based on electronic industries, which had already practiced the internal instructor program in Central Taiwan. Conclusions of this study were summarized as follows: 1.The major relative factors of effectiveness of internal instructors were grouped into the following eight factors: (1)Internal Instructor’s Intellectual Capacity and Professional Expertise (2)Organization Management System (3)Learning Environment (4)Rewarding Mechanism (5)Recognition of Management Conceptual Context (6)Information Affiliation (7)Employees'''' Learning Characteristics (8)Learning Motivation 2.In these eight factors, "Internal Instructor’s Intellectual Capacity and Professional Expertise ", "Organization Management System" and "Learning Environment" were the factors mostly related to the effectiveness of internal instructors. 3.In fact, " Internal Instructor’s Intellectual Capacity and Professional Expertise", "Organization Management System" and "Learning Environment" were less satisfactory when performing. 4.Learner''''s gender and working experiences had higher correlation with most of the factors. 5.Learner''''s gender and working experiences shown distinct difference of sufficient degree when performing on most of the factors. 6.Learner''''s working classifications and positions shown distinct difference when performing on the "Employees'''' Learning Characteristics" and "Learning Motivation". 7.Employees who had been the internal instructors in the past one-year would present better elevation on the " Learning Motivation ". At last, recommendations were presented to the enterprises for reference upon the above findings and consulted those who would carry out this research in the future.

Since U.S. ”The Big Three” created QS- 9000 quality requirement system in 1994, the system become popular by automobile and auto parts manufacturers as an automotive industry standard. Until 1998, Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) revised the standard. The third edition of the standard brings semi-conductor industry and fixture industry into the standard. On the other hand, Semi-conductor industry, a “Hi-Tech” industry, is one of economic developing point by government. Hence this research will try to discuss how is key success factor of QS-9000 for semi-conductor industry and organization performance after promoting QS-9000 as a reference. With an equal mark to so call “ Technology Noble”, people’s imagination for semi-conductor or related electric industry are high growth, high efficiency, and high profit. The research surveyed 361 semi-conductor or related electric companies according to the 2001-register-list from Statistics Bureau of Economy Department. Expect through a deliberation design of survey form to search key success factor between QS-9000 and semi-conductor industry, implement performance, and co-relation. The practical function of financial statement analysis is to give investors a beneficial prediction of abnormal returns. Due to the different results of academic investigations about abnormal returns for domestic security market, the purpose of this study is looking for a relationship between financial ratios and abnormal returns in Taiwan stock market. Furthermore, the predictable behavior of financial ratios for abnormal returns is used to deduce the utility of financial statement. The study samples used in this research are focused on the listed electronic-industries companies in Taiwan, and the analytic data range between 1994 and 1997. The independent variables are composed of thirty selected financial ratios. The value of cumulative abnormal return (CAR) is used for the dependent variable of forecasting model. The significant independent variables are picked up by univariate Logistic Model, and these values are further applied in multivariate Logistic Model to develop the final forecasting model. Eventually, the analytic data in 1998 are putted on the forecasting model to check the reality of the predictive behavior. There are three substantial conclusions in this empirical research: 1.Ten financial ratios, which are picked up according to univariate Logistic Model, are significant. 2.Return on Total Assets and Return on Stockholder’s Equity are the most utile variables in multivariate Logistic Model to predict the abnormal returns. 3.For both the demarcations of (0.5, 0.5) and (0.6, 0.4) forms, the values of cumulative probability function (Pr) calculated from forecasting model are 58.93% and 61.54%, respectively, and have better reliability than random probability. 4.According to the analysis of financial ratios, the predictive results of abnormal returns for stock markets in the field of electronic industries are approved. It means that there are predictable efficiency for stock markets in Taiwan’s electronic industries. It is useful and beneficial for investors to predict the abnormal returns by using the analysis of financial ratios.

Amjad, Muhammad Mustafa. "Modeling of Electrical Grid Systems to Evaluate Sustainable Electricity Generation in Pakistan". 2020. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/masters_theses_2/908.

Texto completo
Resumen
Pakistan has always had a history of severe energy shortfalls, which rose up to an alarming 33% in 2013. This situation was countered by investments in the energy sector through the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which were unfortunately largely based on brown fuels. Although beneficial in the short term, these investments do not bode well for the climate scenario of Pakistan, with various parts of the country already having experienced temperatures rise of 1-3°C. To ensure that the current situation doesn’t exacerbate and is tackled in a timely manner, this research aims to examine how the untapped potential of renewable energy in Pakistan can be better utilized by modelling the entire electrical grid system for multi-portfolio based sustainable electricity generation, in line with the sustainable development goals chalked out by Pakistan with the United Nations (UN). Delving further into the matter, a gap is observed that demands coalescence between sustainability and portfolio-based generation in the context of Pakistan, since the prevalent narrative is of Business As Usual (BAU). The research methodology implemented is a cross sectional case study employing qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and outcomes, in which the entire grid system of Pakistan is studied and sustainability metrics are defined; followed by a comprehensive use of Multi-Criteria Decision Methodology in decision making process. Portfolios defined are a combination of different generation technologies, each simulating a possible avenue of policy, and are then evaluated for a range of sustainability metrics to understand the tradeoffs involved to arrive at a set goal. The process decision framework developed shall enable the Pakistani energy sector in meeting the energy demands by providing the decision-makers with various routes to do so, while informing on the sustainability impact of their decisions.

Amster, Brian D. "The Process by which Physicians Extract Information from Electronic Progress Notes During Handoffs". 2012. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/theses/890.

Texto completo
Resumen
A handoff requires that the responsibility for patient patient’s care is transferred from one healthcare professional to another. The goals of this research were to identify, evaluate, and use analytical methods to describe how physicians (n=10) extracted information from electronic progress notes, one important source of information used during handoffs. Participants also verbally summarized the notes as they would during handoffs. Six methods were used to analyze how participants read progress notes, each uniquely contributing to our understanding of physicians’ visual attention patterns during this process. The participants focused their visual attention on the Impression and Plan section of the progress notes in that over 60% of the participants’ total time was spent reading that section. Physicians could miss an error or critical piece of information if the information is not located in the Impression and Plan. The importance given by the participants to the Impression and Plan section was confirmed in that the majority of participants’ verbal handoff content focused primarily on information that could be found in the Impression and Plan. Participants relied on the Medication Profile section quite heavily if it was present in the progress note. We determined that if the participant was currently reading in one section (s)he most likely would transition his/her visual attention to the physically closest section in the note, meaning the format of progress notes may dictate how notes are read. We determined what the most likely paths were through the progress notes, which could be a first step in reordering of the progress note for evaluation in future studies. Participants’ responses to debriefing questions suggested that they were aware of their reliance on the Impression and Plan, but that they thought the way they read notes is context-specific, depending on factors such as their use of the note and the reputation of the author of the note. These findings suggest a need for more research that evaluates how different note structures and content affect how physicians and other health providers extract and use information in varied clinical contexts.
