Resumen
Executed according to the rhythm and references of Bach's Inventions and Sinfonias, this piece analyzes the times of the technological condition, electracy, and reading as ways to explore invention‘s' (composed, performed, taught, as an invitation to think invention in more than one way). The temporalities of invention(,) of the human and of electracy are played off one another to understand how integrity and priority attempt to contain the technological condition in a limited notion of afterness and how electracy might be begun to be translated in a certain manner.

Resumen
This article is designed to demonstrate that electric roads are an affordable way to electrify all forms of road transport—not only cars, but also buses and trucks. Electric roads represent a way to power electric vehicles without relying solely on batteries. The idea is that when an electric vehicle reaches an electric road, it stops using power from the battery and instead uses power directly from the road itself. The primary challenge for electric vehicles is still the perception of a compromised quality of life in owning an electric vehicle due to a limited range compared with petrol and diesel cars, today. This paper introduces a new technology, currently experiencing rapid development, that can not only overcome range anxiety but make electric vehicles better, in terms of range, than petrol and diesel cars today. Furthermore, not only can this research help to arrange this, but it can also help, for the first time, to cost-effectively electrify heavy-duty transport, such as trucks and buses, which would be a huge breakthrough in terms of sustainability, as it is very important to start supplying electricity to heavy-duty vehicles. The case study provides a very hypothetical example of a trip with and without an electric road, covering a total of 26,011 km of highways and main roads. The results indicate that building electric roads is cheaper than many other alternatives. If a large battery is replaced with a smaller battery for each new vehicle sold, after 3 years, enough savings will be made to electrify all highways and main roads in Turkey. This paper can help transport operators and policymakers develop strategies to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by appropriately implementing electric road infrastructure.

Resumen
Arising out of the work of Marshall McLuhan, Eric Havelock, Walter Ong, Jacques Derrida and Gregory Ulmer, among others, it is widely thought there are three stages in the history of human communication: the oral, the literate and the electronic. Nonetheless, debate is ongoing over the integration, ordering and the substantive separation of these stages. An upshot of these debates is that each stage is loosely allied to a particular socio/political structure: hunter/gatherer or tribal societies, nation states, and globalisation respectively. In the current alloying of ‘electronic communication’ and ‘globalisation’ though there is a rising interest in what is termed ‘new regionalism’, or regionalisation, even regionality. Accordingly, Chora-Logic: Electracy as Regional Epistemology examines the possibility of an emerging conceptual alliance (and through reference to two Australian regions a sometimes embodied and situated one) between the embryonic communicational infrastructure of electracy and the age-old spatial scale of the region, a relationship that might just come to represent a means of rethinking the civic and the psychic, the commercial and governmental frameworks of an electro-energised global skein. It may also be a way of reinvigorating a study in the relation of the body (in its capacity as a citizen-subject) to the nation state, especially as all these entities are increasingly though ambiguously constituted in and through globalisation. The method of synthesising and antagonising these relations between electracy and regionalism is through the philosophy of chora, Plato’s conception of embodied place as found in the middle section of the Timaeus, coaxed along by a range of interpretations of this important genesis myth in Western philosophy. In particular, chora is taken up in the work of Gregory Ulmer as a key method in the ongoing conceptualisation of an electrate epistemology. Arising out of these concerns Chora-Logic is an experimental re-configuration of the sovereign, abstracted and disembodied citizen-subject of the Cartesian mould (a significant psycho-political mooring of the literate national character) to one situated both in the virtual density and multidimensional actuality of a particular place (organically conceived of herein as an idiosyncratic mix of psychic, domestic, workplace, local and regional proximities), but whose both [dis][embodied] self-knowledge and world-knowledge are now increasingly realised by access to an electronically arbitrated global/regional polis. In sound-bite terms, the bumper sticker could just as easily proclaim the following inversion: ‘Think and feel chora-logically, act globally’. Finally, the nucleus of Chora-Logic: Electracy as Regional Epistemology is a risky praxis whose experimental eddy (in both formal and content terms) spins within the current ambivalence, uncertainty and fast-paced change in electronic communicative arrangements (electracy), as these are themselves wrapped in the psychic and socio-political variabilities of spatial affiliation, all of which are symbiotically entwined regardless of the historical period and/or the geographical context.

Resumen

This dissertation is a historical project that traces the development of notable strands of composition pedagogy first crafted by Gregory Ulmer in his 1984 Applied Grammatology that continue to the present day, and groups them together in how they are incorporating multimodal tools in writing instruction that demand innovation in composition instruction. This will demonstrate how the work of certain contemporary composition scholars can be seen as creatively re-working the invention model that was devised and promoted by Ulmer in 1984. Through this history of invention in composition, Ulmer's invention model of writing instruction is clearly seen as both situated within a contemporary American Romanticism, and influenced heavily by Derridean deconstruction, and I will show that today's scholars who are students of Ulmer's invention model are creating pedagogy that effectively bring together elements of both Romanticism and Deconstruction.

Internal+/-External Terrains is a meditation on the nature of electronic creativity, primarily from a production point of view. It seeks to arbitrate and synthesise a range of skills, attributes and ideas that might constitute the field of electronic aesthetics. It does this from the perspective of electronic artists, and the socio/economic/cultural system they increasingly serve. The aesthetics of electronic production, as looked at through the framework of electracy, serves as a model through which to locate some specific shifts in both self-making, and capitalism, in both their Post-Fordist, and globalising manifestations. Internal+/-External Terrains is a meditation on the re-conceptualisation going on in electronic meaning-making, as it is currently happening at the interfaces of the psyche, the politico-cultural domain, and in the techno-aesthetic apparatus of its production. Through the compilation of a possible program in electracy (of its various aesthetic components as used in production), along with a brief outline of the electronic artist, Internal+/-External Terrains situates both, as role-model and epicentre, of an increasingly accepted mode of abstraction: Radial-Logic©. And it is this omnidirectional form of abstraction currently lighting the cyber-cohering logic of an already arrived future.

Resumen
Electric vehicle technology is an interdisciplinary field in continuous development. It appears to be a margin for improvements. The Division for Electricity at Uppsala University is doing significant research in the field. The present thesis investigates electric machines for vehicular applications, both in the driveline and in the traction motor. Section 1 presents a driveline with two galvanically isolated voltage levels. A low power side is operated at the optimum voltage of the batteries, while a high power side is operated at a higher voltage leading to higher efficiencies in the traction motor. Both sides are coupled through a flywheel that stabilizes the power transients inherent to a drive cycle. A review of electric machine topologies for electric vehicles is presented in Section 2. The permanent magnet excited machine is the most suitable technology for an electric driveline. Section 3 is devoted to numerical models applied to electric machines. The equivalent circuit of a motor/generator with two sets of windings is first presented. This machine couples both sides of the driveline and drives the rotor of the flywheel. The electric parameters are calculated with custom FEM models. A discussion on slotless machines concludes with a simple model to analyze the magnetic field from one static 3D simulation. The tooth ripple losses in solid salient poles are also analyzed with a novel FEM approach. A complete description of the losses in electric machines gives a proper background for further discussion on efficiency. Section 4 presents the experimental work constructed to validate the theoretical models. The experiments include an axial flux, single wounded prototype, an axial flux, double wound prototype and a planed radial flux coreless prototype. Section 5 focuses on traction motors for electric vehicles. A simulated prototype illustrates a design and calculation process. The loss theory and the numerical methods presented in Section 3 are applied.

Resumen
Since few years the electric vehicles draw the attention. The battery technology’s continual improvements and incentives from the authorities guarantee them an assured future with a fast and considerable development. Some figures are forecasted by 2020: one or two millions electric vehicles. This could mean a huge increase in electricity consumption. The consequences on the total energy consumption have already been analyzed, however studies on the impact on the load curve remain scarce. In this context, this master thesis focuses on the impact of the electric vehicles’ charge on the French load curve and the production and consumption balancing. The grid issues are not studied here. The first part presents the state of the art in battery and electric vehicle technology, as well as battery charge’s characteristics. Besides the French traffic data are studied, in order to build the most realistic model as possible. The second part explains the principle of the modeling. A general and flexible model for the French fleet is built. This model can simulate the times of charge of a vehicle, and the state of charge of its battery, in order to get a total load curve for several days for an electric fleet. And finally, the different load curves are analyzed as well as their impacts on the electric balancing system and the possible solutions to lower these impacts. As the peak load for the electric vehicles’ charge corresponds to the total consumption peak in the evening according to the most probable scenario, services have to be implemented to reduce or put back the overload due to the electric vehicles. Those services (tariff signals regulations, battery management system, cut-off injunctions) have been tested. A model for grid injections during peak hours has also been developed, in order to help the electric system, and erase the electric vehicles’ impact on the load curve. Studies for the optimum load, the reserves and the margins are also suggested as well as other possible studies, such as EV’s carbon footprint. The reflections and strategies developed in this master thesis don’t reflect RTE’s policy and don’t commit the company.

Resumen
Abstract The electrification of subsea control and production systems is essential to achieve the low carbon emission and high productivity targets that the offshore industry is facing now. But how to electrify these controls without compromising safety? This paper provides a comparison of the design strategies using mechanical springs or electric batteries to implement safety functions in control systems, considering as a case study the development of the new subsea electric actuator for small-bore valves SVA R2 from Bosch Rexroth. Traditionally, to control process valves with safety functions, hydraulic actuators have been applied with field-proven springs to bring the valve to a specific position (open or closed, depending on the application) in case of a safety-related failure such as a loss of power supply. However, the first electric subsea actuators developed with fail-safe springs turned out to be too large, heavy, inefficient, and costly due to their complex electro-mechanic system for broad adoption by the subsea industry. Thus, new electric subsea actuators [2] were developed using electric batteries to reduce overall size, but this added new risks: now the safety control has to detect a dangerous situation by itself and actively drive the system to the safe position. But, at the OTC 2021, a new electric subsea actuator for small bore valves was presented which achieves Safety Integrity Level SIL 3 using field-proven springs as compact as a hydraulic actuator (OTC-31083-MS) [17]. Following the functional safety methodology acc. to the IEC 61508, IEC 61511 and ISO 13849, this work provides a comparison between a control architecture with mechanical springs and another with electric batteries, considering the whole product life cycle (design, manufacture, installation, commissioning, and operation). An evaluation of the failure modes and failure mechanisms of existing subsea equipment, from field data available in the OREDA@Cloud, gives a proper assessment of the risks associated with implementing the new functional safety architecture. Costs of engineering, production and operation are taken into account to find out the most technical and economically feasible solution. This case study is a reference for the design and qualification of new subsea electric actuators with functional safety requirements using mechanical springs or electric batteries. It provides technical guidelines and risk assessment for designers and users of subsea control systems such as machine builders, EPCI companies, operators, service providers or certification bodies. If electrification is a prerequisite for a low carbon future, safety is a prerequisite for the adoption of all-electric control systems. This paper shows how to electrify subsea production and process systems by using mechanical springs or electric batteries without compromising safety.

Resumen
We have an urgent need—and a unique opportunity—to profoundly transform the ways in which people and goods move around in the United States. A collaborative analysis led by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that using existing technologies, and at modest cost, we can achieve a zero-carbon, equitable transportation system by 2050. This transformation is made possible by phasing out petroleum and transitioning to low and zero-carbon fuels. This eliminates tailpipe emissions that endanger communities, and at the same time keeps our climate targets within reach. To get there, we need to rapidly electrify vehicle fleets; strengthen efficiency standards for both electric and internal-combustion engine vehicles; reduce emissions from the remaining liquid fuels in hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as aviation, shipping, and long distance road transportation; and enable communities to reduce or eliminate the need to drive. Achieving these goals will require a suite of forward-thinking policies and regulations at all administrative levels that are implemented with meaningful community engagement.

Resumen
Electric vehicle (EV) transmission technology—crucial for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs)—is developing quickly and customers want good performance at a low cost. Single-speed gearboxes are popular in electric drive systems due to their simple and cost-effective configuration. However, multispeed gearboxes are being taken to market due to their higher low-speed torque, dynamic performance, and energy efficiency. Unsettled Technology Areas in Electric Propulsion Systems reviews the economic drivers, existing techniques, and current challenges of EV transmission technology—including torque interruption during shifting; thermal and sealing issues; and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). This report discusses the pros and cons for both single-speed and multispeed gearboxes with numerical analysis.

Resumen
We study the allocation of dynamic electric vehicle charging investments from the policymaker’s perspective, which aims to meet statewide emission-reduction targets for the Illinois passenger vehicle sector. We determine statewide charging deployment trajectories over a 30-year planning horizon and estimate their emission reduction. Electric vehicle demand functions model the electrified vehicle market growth and capture network externalities and spatial heterogeneity. Our analysis indicates that most chargers need to be deployed in the first 10 to 15 years of the transition to allow benefits to accrue for electric vehicle drivers, availability of home charging influences consumers’ choice and drivers’ electrified travel distance, charging stations should be prioritized for frequent long-distance drivers, and spatial effects are crucial in accurately capturing the demand for electric vehicles in Illinois. We also develop a multi-criteria suitability map to site charging stations for electric vehicles based on economic, societal, and environmental justice indicators. We identify census tracts that should be prioritized during Illinois’ statewide deployment of charging infrastructure along with interstates and major highways that traverse them. Major interstates and highways I-90, I-80, I-55, and I-57 are identified as having high siting suitability scores for charging stations. Last, a novel location model was developed for equitable electric vehicle charging infrastructure placement in the Illinois interstate and major highway network. Two objectives were set to reduce detours and improve the ability to complete long-distance trips for low-income electric vehicle travelers and multi-unit dwelling residents. Our analysis indicates that if the system’s efficiency is the only consideration, low-income/multi-unit housing resident travelers are most likely to fail to complete their trips, while an equitable charging siting could mitigate this issue.

Resumen
This report assesses the feasibility of a scalable and replicable project to replace Montego Bay Metros (MBM) aging fleet of diesel buses with electric buses powered by 100 percent renewable energy. It identifies battery electric buses charged with electricity from floating solar PV as the best option for achieving that goal; shows that, when the social cost of carbon is included, this is least cost option compared with the cost of replacing MBMs fleet with new diesel buses and with electric buses powered by Jamaicas electricity grid; and provides advice on what support is required to make this trailblazing project a reality.

Resumen
As electric mobility is expanding at a rapid pace, the standardized availability of gas stations compared to a scarcity of charging stations continues to be the greatest challenge for electric vehicles. With cities, university campuses and businesses promoting electric vehicle infrastructure and incentives, it is necessary to develop key performance metrics and visualizations that can track the utilization of the charging infrastructure. This study performs a manual data collection at dedicated plug-in charging stations across Purdue University to assess their utilization. Approximately 2,800 observations were conducted over 50 days across seven level 2 plug-in charging stations. Results showed that for large portion of the observations, vehicles were parked at the spots (40%) but not plugged in. Vehicles plugged in to charging stations accounted for 34% of observations. Charging station spots were vacant for 25% of observations indicating that current infrastructure meets the demand. There were 74 unique vehicles that used the spots, of which 27% were plugged in more than 10 times. Illegally parked vehicles accounted for less than 1% with only 4 repeat offenders who used these spots more than once. As electric deployment continues to increase, performance metrics will be an integral tool for agencies and decision makers to help with the maintenance and expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure.
