Texto completoFire protection materials are widely used to ensure the safety of users of the infrastructure. Standards of fire protection regularly operating, the materials must be more efficient. These are generally composed of refractory mortar and insulating oxides. The objective of this work is to develop a firewall composite 4 h applied by projecting but also to determine the thermal and mechanical properties. In the first part, this study describes the various stages of the development of a fire protection material, after the presentation of the approach that has guided the development of our materials, we are interested especially in the chemical composition of the matrix and that of the cement. Their thermal and mechanical properties have been reviewed. The raw materials for the preparation of mortar were selected. The evolution respectively of thermal conductivity, diffusivity, porosity, specific heat and the mechanical properties of mortars chosen according to the nature and amount of the fillers incorporated in the matrix has been studied. A description of the various analytical and numerical models for the representation of the thermal conductivity and Young's modulus of the materials led to the development of a model able to predict the thermal and mechanical behavior of composites based on the nature and amount of charges added. In a second part, the kinetics of the hydration reaction of gypsum to control setting time and to facilitate the production of the composite in the industrial chain was studied. The influence on the kinetics of hydration, of the chemical composition of the gypsum, particle size distribution and the addition of adjuvant commonly used in the plaster industry, has also been treated. At the end of this study, two formulations of composites applied by projection were developed

Texto completoSeismics or Seismology are powerful tools to investigate Earth's crust. However, both rely on seismic waves that travelled through fluid-saturated sedimentary layers. This work, mainly experimental, aims at understanding the static and dynamic effects of the saturating fluid on the elastic response of clastic rocks. In this framework, two specific studies are emphasized:(i) the rock-fluid physico-chemical interaction, often addressed as the "shear weakening" effect, thought to affect the rock overall elastic response; and (ii) the rock-fluid mechanical interaction, addressed as "frequency effect", thought to induce a dependence of elastic properties to the measuring frequency. Two main rock types are investigated: Sandstone and Limestone. All rock samples are chosen to be isotropic and composed of a dominant mineral content, i.e. quartz for sandstone and calcite for limestone

Texto completoWe are interested in active superhydrophobic materials, whose wetting properties can be tuned with an external parameter. We fabricate soft textured materials and show that the static and dynamic wetting properties of the superhydrophobic materials (such as low liquid-solid adhesion and water-repellency) can be modified either by stretching the substrates or by deflecting them with droplets. We also put into motion superhydrophobic substrates. When deposited on a strongly accelerated non-wetting surface, droplets take unusual and beautiful shapes that we describe and characterize. We finally show that a superhydrophobic streamlined body drags a layer of air when crossing a water/air interface. The thickness of this layer is higher than the height of hydrophobic textures

Texto completoCloud computing permits cost optimization of both deployment and maintenance applications. Thanks to the cloud, applications can be deployed and reconfigured in a few minutes. Each application can thus be continuously maintained at a fair size, so that it can continuously maintain a sufficient quality of service without using too many resources. This adaptation is achieved thanks to the feature named « elasticity ». However, the state of the art shows that current solutions for the management of elasticity are restricted to multi-tier applications and do not manage all possible scenarios. The cloud is actually a young paradigm and the various market providers manage to offer elasticity. If the provided elasticity has the undeniable advantage of being a fast and easy mean to manage basic cases, it does not address the needs of many users. To tackle the current limits of elasticity, the work presented in this manuscript propose a tool for the specification of elasticity that is named Vulcan. Besides being simple and complete, Vulcan shows that there is no correlation between the completeness of a solution for the management of elasticity and the complexity of its use. Based on an autonomous approach, Vulcan brings the following contributions :- a model for elastic applications : it is used to describe how an application should evolve over the reconfigurations induced during elasticity. This description is done at a high level said « by intension » thanks to an innovative formalism. The proposed formalism is at the basis of the Vulcan simplicity of use.- a scheduling algorithm : this algorithm resolves various parameters during elasticity while providing to the user of Vulcan an easy comprehension. - a prototype that implements all of the concepts described in this manuscript.Making use of both innovative concepts and principles from proven solutions, Vulcan has shown its capabilities to push the current limits of elasticity

Texto completoThe mechanical properties of complex objects at the nanometric scale are of great interest in many fields such as nanobiotechnology. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is the ideal tool to measure forces at the nanometer scale and to perform indentation experiments onto isolated objects. This PhD work takes place in the context of the development of a nano-object intended to theranostic applications. These nanoparticules are composed of a glassy polymeric capsule containing a liquid fluorinated core. The mechanical properties of these capsules are fully deployed for the transportation in biological media as well as for the bouncing of ultrasound imaging and their localized destruction. The complexity of those systems, both in term of geometry and composite aspect, makes it difficult to assess their mechanical properties, in particular their elasticity. Giving the fact that composite objects show a variation of their elasticity according to the indentation depth, a semi-analytical method (CHIMER : Coated Half-space Indentation Model for Elastic Response) has been implemented to interpret the apparent elasticity of such system. In order to support this method, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based bilayers have been investigated by AFM nanoindentation. A good agreement between the model and the experimental data has been found and the elastic behavior of a rigid film laid over a soft substrate has been well described at the nanometer scale. This model has also been used to investigate the apparent elasticity of polymeric capsules. The influence of the shell thickness and of the bulk elasticity of the polymer has been therefore shown. Moreover, this original approach has been used to describe the effects of temperature and frequency on the apparent elasticity of polymeric capsules filled with a fluorinated liquid core

Thanagopal, Thannaletchimy. "Estimating price and quality elasticities of international trade". Thesis, Paris 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA010070.
Texto completoThis thesis is a compilation of three essays that estimate the ‘true’ trade price elasticity of demand while adjusting for the effect of quality in the trade models. Quality in this thesis is introduced via our own proxy for quality known as ‘knowledge’. This proxy takes into account not only direct expenditures (and hence stocks) spent on research and development but also indirect expenditures (and stocks) through positive externalities originating from innovation efforts by other countries and other industries. In addition, the main trade database used in this thesis is the WIOD (World Input-Output Database) which provides bilateral trade flows, at the industrial level for 35 industries in manufacturing and services based on the ISIC Rev. 2 (International Standard Industry Classification Revision 2) over a period of 17 years (from 1995 to 2011). The first essay, “Analyzing BRIC Competitiveness in EU-14, Japan, US and Norway” looks at the competitiveness of the emerging nations notably the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) compared to the EU-14 countries (excluding Luxembourg), Japan, the United States and Norway in 15 distinct manufacturing goods industries over a period of 16 years (1996 to 2011). We use the CMSA (Constant Market Share Analysis) econometrically to dissect the competitive effect of the BRICs in terms of price and quality effects. The CMSA is useful in explaining the gain in export market shares of a country through two terms - the structural effect and the competitive effect. However, the model fails to define the type of competitiveness - whether a country is competitive in terms of prices (price competitiveness) or in terms of non-price factors such as quality and variety (non-price competitiveness). This essay attempts to improve this analysis by estimating individual price and non-price competitive effects using an export market share equation. We find evidence of the competitive effect in BRIC exports towards major industrialized countries namely EU-14 (excluding Luxembourg), Japan, United States and Norway. We also find that the gain in BRIC export market share is largely attributed to better price competition rather than non-price competition. The industrial results, however, indicate the presence of non-price competitiveness in selected homogeneous product industries during this period, suggesting the beginning of a shift in BRIC export competitiveness.

Texto completoReal world workloads are often dynamic. This makes the static scaling of resourcesfatally result in either the waste of resources, if it is based on the estimatedworst case scenario, or the degradation of performance if it is based on the averageworkload. Thanks to the cloud computing model, resources can be provisioned ondemand and scaling can be adapted to the variations of the workload thus achievingelasticity. However, after exploring the existing works, we find that most elasticityframeworks are too generic and fail to meet the specific needs of particularapplications. In this work, we use autonomic loops along with various elasticitytechniques in order to render different types of applications elastic, namelya consolidation service, message-oriented middleware and a stream processingplatform. These elastic solutions have been implemented based on open-sourceapplications and their evaluation shows that they enable resources’ economy withminimal overhead

The use of elasticities of substitution between inputs has become the standard method for addressing the effect of a change in the mix of input used for production from a technological or cost standpoint. (Chambers 1988) A researcher that wants to estimate this elasticity, or some other comparative static, typically would do so using parametric production or cost function (e.g. translog or normalized quadratic) with panel data. For a study with only cross-sectional data, the construction of such a function may be problematic. Using a dual approach, a nonparametric alternative in such a situation may be the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Cooper et al. (2000) provided a methodology for estimating elasticities of substitution for the technical production problem using DEA. To our knowledge, this has not been extended to the cost efficiency problem, which would be equivalent to estimating Allen partial or Morishima elasticities of substitution between inputs using a cost function (or cost minimization framework). The purpose of this thesis is to show how elasticities of substitution can be derived and estimated for the technical production and cost (overall economic) efficiency DEA under variable returns to scale. In addition, an empirical example using Kansas Farm Management Association (KFMA) data is presented to illustrate the estimation of these elasticities. The results showed that input substitutability is relatively limited at the enterprise level

Texto completoThis thesis deals with waves at the surface of a liquid, and aims at controlling their propagation. We want to show universal results, valid for all waves, using model experiments. We work with hydroelastic waves, obtained with an elastic membrane that covers the liquid surface. The elastic deformation of this membrane couples with the motion of the fluid, so that we can change the propagation of the waves by modifying the properties of the elastic cover. We show that if we locally change the thickness of the elastic cover, we can deviate, reflect or focus the waves. We then periodically structure the membrane and thus unveil effects due to he periodicity and/or the nature of the objects that form the regular array. We use an ensemble of circular perforations of which we vary the diameter, the spacing and the pattern, in order to accurately control the propagation of the waves in this artificial crystal. In particular, we show that there exist band gaps for the waves. Lastly, we re-visit the Faraday instability, known in hydrodynamics, by vertically vibrating a fluid layer covered with an elastic membrane, and we show that this instability also exist for hydroelastic waves

Texto completoThis work focuses on the development of theoretical models in the framework of biophysics. In particular, it deals with the interactions between bio-filaments (long polymer chains found in biological cells) and biological membranes which protect cells from their environment. It is divided in three main parts, where different systems are studied. Firstly, a model going beyond the Worm-Like Chain model is developed to take into account different preferred states of curvature of the constituents of the bio-polymer chains. This kind of filaments are forced to close into a ring and their interactions with tubular membranes they entwine are discussed. Secondly, the deformations induced to biological membranes by torque-applying bio-filaments are discussed in the linear regime. Finally, the motility of the bacteria Spiroplasma. Preliminary results on an elastic model describing the cell motility are given

Texto completoThe Cloud, with its pay-as-you-go model, gives the possibility of elastic resource management; users can claim and release resources as needed. This elasticity leads to financial and energetical cost reductions, and helps applications to cope with varying workloads.Distributed cloud and HPC applications processing large amounts of data are often co-located with a distributed storage system in order to ensure fast data accesses. Although many works have been proposed to dynamically rescale the processing part of such systems to match their workload, the storage is never considered as malleable (able to be dynamically rescaled) since moving massive amounts of data around is assumed to be too slow in practice. However, in recent years hardware and storage techniques have evolved and this assumption needs to be revisited. In this thesis, we present a study of the rescaling operations in distributed storage systems approached from different angles. We start by modeling the minimal duration of rescaling operations to estimate their potential speed. Then, we develop a benchmark to measure the viability of distributed storage system malleability on a given platform. Last, we implement a rescaling manager for distributed storage systems that decides and organizes the data transfers required during a rescaling operation
