This chapter reviews the conceptual similarities and differences among Snyder’s (1994) hope, Carver and Scheier’s optimism, and Bandura’s self-efficacy. Unlike optimism, hope is focused on beliefs about the self. Unlike self-efficacy, hope is a generalized belief and involves the determination to achieve one’s goals. This chapter also reviews the existing empirical literature, which shows that hope, optimism, and self-efficacy are structurally distinct and differentially related to important life outcomes, including psychological adjustment, coping, and goal-directed performance. The chapter concludes with a discussion of further research needed to clarify the causal relationships among hope, optimism, and self-efficacy and to differentiate hope from other positive psychology constructs.

Why do people come to reject climate science or the safety and efficacy of vaccines, in defiance of the scientific consensus? A popular view explains bad beliefs like these as resulting from a range of biases that together ensure that human beings fall short of being genuinely rational animals. This book presents an alternative account. It argues that bad beliefs arise from genuinely rational processes. We’ve missed the rationality of bad beliefs because we’ve failed to recognize the ubiquity of the higher-order evidence that shapes beliefs, and the rationality of being guided by this evidence. The book argues that attention to higher-order evidence should lead us to rethink both how minds are best changed and the ethics of changing them: we should come to see that nudging—at least usually—changes belief (and behavior) by presenting rational agents with genuine evidence, and is therefore fully respectful of intellectual agency. We needn’t rethink Enlightenment ideals of intellectual autonomy and rationality, but we should reshape them to take account of our deeply social epistemic agency.

What is the impact of religious and non-religious beliefs on health care? Health care, an essential aspect of an individual’s physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, is an important way to assess this question. This book studies the relationship of the physical and spiritual domains by investigating how religious belief affects the provision and consumption of public health in three Africa countries: Uganda, Mozambique, and Ethiopia. Results all confirm the impact of religious beliefs on health perceptions, procurement, and provision. Securing good health is a key and universal aspiration. Furthermore, modern medicine is commonly understood as a means to that end. No matter the religious belief, all showed awareness of the importance and efficacy of medical treatment. On the health care provision side, faith-based entities are important, even essential, in health care for the three countries studied. A review of health outcomes, centered around the Millennium Development Goals, reveals general progress across the board. The progress towards the MDG’s has also been made by international ngo’s, including those focused specifically on women’s health. Health seeking behaviour is affected by a holistic mindset in which physical and mental health are intertwined. This world view, observed among adherents of Christianity, Islam, and African Traditional Religion, shapes Africans’ understanding of the world of sickness and health and how best to respond to its complexity. Africans thus pursue health care in a rational way, given their world view, with an openness to, and even preference, for faith-based provision where government efforts may fall short of basic needs.

Clinicians need critical appraisal skills to weigh up the quality of the literature and to decide whether it has implications for their practice. Every belief in medicine is a construct created from the limited information available and carries a degree of uncertainty. A centralized approach to research identifies the highest priority areas of uncertainty so as to bring about the most improvement for the largest number of patients. This patient-centred model classifies studies into basic science, translational, and clinical research. Adequately powered mega-trials are required to bridge the translational gap between efficacy (does a treatment work?) and effectiveness (does a treatment work when applied in ordinary clinical practice?). There is a paucity of these in perioperative medicine.

Chapter 4 examines the circumstances leading to the final success of Lincoln Kirstein’s American ballet in 1963, when Ford Foundation philanthropy made George Balanchine’s neoclassicism a national institution and a national style. Examining the New York City Ballet’s cultural diplomacy activities, it illustrates the advantageous position that Balanchine attained within the alliances between the government, private and corporate foundations, and the arts that developed in the cultural Cold War. Yet the chapter stresses the complexity of the collaboration between the ballet company and the government, insisting that the artists often had very different political motivations than the state. A main concern is how the belief in the social efficacy of art, nurtured in the 1930s, was affected by the transformational shift in arts funding, organization, and management that arose during the Cold War. This chapter concludes by raising questions about the consequences of the post-WWII institutionalization of the arts for the political agendas of the 1930s-era modernists.

This chapter examines the themes of shamanism and witchcraft in the context of Waorani–Quichua relations in Toñampari. Even as a growing number of kowori have come to live in Waorani villages, Quichua people continue to have a prominent place in local discussions of enmity and violence. This sense of alterity can be seen in Waorani ideas about shamanism, a practice that is associated closely with Quichuas. This chapter describes indigenous understandings of shamanism and the historical role of shamans in mediating intercultural relations in Amazonia. It considers how Quichuas have become the primary source of both shamanic curing and witchcraft accusations, a seemingly paradoxical situation that reflects indigenous understandings of shamanism and Waorani efforts to “live well” in contemporary villages in the aftermath of violence. The chapter shows that Waorani in Toñampari object to shamanism not because of a lack of belief in its efficacy but because shamanic power presents a threat to the idealized conditions of living in what they call a comunidad (community).

Abstract The Challenge to the Auspices is an investigation into the interaction of Roman magistrates during the Middle Republic with the practice of auspices, with a focus on attempts to avoid, ignore, or resist this requirement, and on the consequences of such attempts. Proceeding from an examination of the Roman concepts of imperium and auspices (auspicia), especially as they relate to the realm of war, and of the constitutional position and powers of the Dictator and the Master of the Horse (magister equitum) relative to each other and to the Consuls and lower magistrates, the work presents six case studies in the fourth and third centuries bc in which Roman commanders questioned, violated, or openly rejected the need for auspices. It is argued that these instances reflect a not insignificant minority view within the Roman ruling class, the nobility, regarding the efficacy of auspices and the necessity and desirability of observing them. The catastrophic outcome in several of these events, particularly during the early years of the Second Punic War, rendered further resistance to the practice politically unsustainable, and by the second century resulted in its universal acceptance, regardless of personal belief.

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) theorists propose that disturbances in cognition underlie and maintain much emotional disturbance. Accordingly the cognitive addition to behavioral therapy typically consists in collaboratively noticing, restructuring, de-fusing from, and challenging these cognitions by the therapist and the patient. With the right group of problems, patients, and therapists, the practice of CBT is well known to possess therapeutic efficacy. This chapter, however, primarily considers the theory rather than the therapy of CBT; in particular it looks at the central significance it gives tocognitionin healthy and disturbed emotional function. It suggests that if "cognition" is used to mean merely ourbelief and thought, then CBT theory provides an implausible model of much emotional distress. If, on the other hand, "cognition" refers to the processing ofmeaning, then CBT risks losing its distinctiveness from all therapies other than the most blandly behavioral. The chapter also suggests: (a) that the appearance, in CBT's causal models of psychopathology, of what seem to be distinct causal processes and multiple discrete intervention sites may owe more to the formalism of the theory than to the structure of the well or troubled mind; (b) that CBT theorists sometimes unhelpfully assimilate the having of thoughts to episodes of thinking; (c) that CBT models may sometimes overemphasize the significance of belief and thought in psychopathology because they have unhelpfully theorized meaning as belonging more properly to these, rather than to emotional, functions; (d) that CBT approaches can also misconstrue the nature and value of acknowledgement and self-knowledge-thereby underplaying the value of some of the CBT therapist's own interventions. The theoretical and clinical implications of these critiques is discussed-such as that there are reasons to doubt that CBT always works, when it does, in the manner it tends to describe for itself.

This chapter discusses cognitive processing therapy (CPT), a trauma-focused, cognitive-behavioral treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). CPT focuses primarily on identifying and challenging maladaptive beliefs that have developed about and as a result of the trauma, in order to help the client adopt a more balanced set of beliefs. Based on its long history of research support, CPT is one of the leading evidence-based treatments for PTSD. The chapter covers the theoretical background for CPT, describes the therapy, and presents a summary of research findings. Studies of CPT across multiple populations, settings, cultures, and countries are discussed. Research on the efficacy of CPT for individuals with comorbid conditions (e.g., brain injury, personality disorders, depression) and the impact of CPT on health-related outcomes and psychosocial functioning is also presented.

This article reviews the topics of affect, motivation, working memory, and their relationships to mathematics learning and performance. The underlying factors of interest, motivation, self-efficacy, and maths anxiety, as well as an approach concerning people’s beliefs about fixed versus malleable intelligence, can be grouped into an approach and an avoidance constellation of attitudes and beliefs, with opposite relationships to outcome measures of learning and mastery in maths. This article then considers the research on working memory, showing it to be central to arithmetic and maths processing, and also the principle mental component being disrupted by affective and emotional reactions during problem solving. After discussing the disruptive effects of maths anxiety, choking under pressure, and stereotype threat, the article closes with a brief consideration of how these affective disruptions might be minimized or eliminated.

The teaching profession is a highly stressful occupation and susceptible to burnout due to high levels of workload compared to other contact occupations. In Malaysia, the majority of science teachers are experiencing physical and mental drain after long periods of teaching service and mundane routine year in and year out. Despite the general assumptions of a teacher’s job is merely teaching from a textbook, a teacher’s workload includes teaching-related (class preparation and classroom management) and non-teaching related (administration and meetings). All these challenges required teachers to possess high self-efficacy beliefs, great teaching motivation, and positive attitudes toward teaching science. When the development of the affective domain is neglected during pre-service years, teachers’ behavioural intention in teaching science will subside gradually. This may cause emotional exhaustion, feelings of ineffectiveness, and job burnout when the pre-service teachers start to work in a high-pressure environment. The prime focus of this book includes the use of Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach in studying the mediating effect of attitudes toward teaching science in the relationship between teacher self-efficacy beliefs and teaching motivation on behavioural intention in teaching science. This book provides insights for policymakers to formulate courses on managing personal affective domains in the teacher education curriculum. It is also hoped that this book will be of interest to academicians and researchers on the topic related to teacher education and teaching professional development.

Despite the presence of robust data on safety and efficacy of bariatric and metabolic surgery, many patients and physicians do not consider surgery to treat obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. One reason may be inaccurate beliefs about the risk-benefit ratios of medical and surgical treatments of obesity. Estimating the risk of postoperative complications can improve surgical decision-making and informed patient consent. Furthermore, there would be a considerable benefit in identifying modifiable preoperative conditions that are associated with increased risk of postoperative adverse events. The methodology and characteristics of online risk assessment tools in bariatric surgery are presented in this chapter.

In Myths, Misconceptions, and Invalid Assumptions about Counseling the authors examine the science, art, and certainties and uncertainties of psychotherapy. In this book we have selected several dozen issues in our field, many of which are considered generally accepted principles or operating assumptions. We put them under close scrutiny to examine them more carefully. We’ve considered a wide variety of subjects, ranging from those that relate to our espoused beliefs, theoretical models, favored techniques and interventions, to accreditation and licensing requirements. We have also addressed some of the sanctioned statements about the nature and meaning of empirically supported and evidence based treatments. We even question what we can truly “know” for sure and how we can be certain these things are true. When considering the efficacy of psychotherapy, there is overwhelming evidence that the vast majority of clients are significantly improved as a result of our treatments. Advances in the models, methods, and strategies during the last few decades have allowed us to work more swiftly and efficiently, to reach a much more economically and culturally diverse population. But do we really know and understand as much as we pretend to? Is the foundation upon which we stand actually as stable and certain as we think, or at least claim to believe? Are the major assumptions and “truths” that we take for granted and accept as foundational principles really supported by solid data? And how might these assumptions, beliefs, and constructs we hold so sacred perhaps compromise and limit increased creativity and innovation? These are some of the uncomfortable and provocative questions that we wish to raise, and perhaps challenge, so that we might consider alternative conceptions that might further increase our effectiveness and improve our knowledge base grounded with solid evidence.
