Cercherò di affrontare in questo articolo come questo inaspettato contesto esterno abbia in-fluenzato in modo immediato, quasi palpabile, la cornice abituale delle sedute e abbia generato effetti controtransferali molto intensi. L'urgenza e la traumaticità dei suoi effetti imprevedibili hanno prodotto un movimento regressivo molto accentuato, scatenando con una forza incon-trollabile un'intensa angoscia di morte, mettendo in gioco difese arcaiche e aumentando il rischio di agiti. La modalità relazionale in cui l'analista, colto ancora una volta in una situazione simmetrica a quella dei pazienti, cercava di contenere e proporre un fragile equilibrio tra una realtà minacciosa e un mondo interno spaventoso su cui crollare.

Il paradosso di Winnicott riguardo alla "capacità di essere solo" che il bambino raggiunge in presenza della madre, è applicato dall'autrice alla rete di relazioni familiari dentro cui si forma la soggettività. Vengono esaminati alcuni flash clinici per esemplificare gli effetti destabi-lizzanti di una mancata acquisizione della "capacità di essere solo in presenza", mostrando come non basti una separazione effettiva per scioglie il patto denegativo che è alla base di una dipendenza patologica. Vengono poi esaminati due casi letterari: Il riposo del guerriero romanzo utilizzato da Bleger per analizzare il legame simbiotico e le sue conseguenze catastrofiche e Forza maggiore, un film che descrive come una situazione traumatica avvenuta nella realtà innesca una crisi sentimentale di coppia e una rinnovata capacità di insight riguardo all'amore altruistico e l'amore egoistico.

La condizione planetaria contemporanea, fortemente segnata dagli effetti della pan¬demia di coronavirus, ci pone con estrema violenza davanti ad un punto di non ritorno: il pianeta Terra sta collassando su sé stesso. Come osservare ed analizzare la realtà attuale? Che relazione sussiste tra il mondo umano e quello non-umano? E soprattutto, è possibile progettarne la coesistenza? Questo breve testo si compone di una introduzione alla figura e al pensiero di Timothy Morton, uno dei pensatori più interessanti nel panorama filosofico-ecologista contemporaneo, e della recensione di due dei suoi libri recentemente tradotti e pubblicati in italiano, Iperoggetti e Noi, esseri ecologici, in cui l'autore ci apre ad insondate e radicali prospettive ecologiche.

Studi clinici recenti hanno dimostrato che la denervazione renale bilaterale con catetere a radiofrequenza riduce significativamente i valori pressori nell'ipertensione resistente. All'efficacia antipertensiva si associa una significativa riduzione dell'ipertono simpatico, dell'insulino-resistenza e del danno d'organo cardio-renale. La procedura si è rivelata pressoché priva di effetti collaterali. Sebbene i dati della letteratura sull'efficacia antipertensiva della denervazione renale transcatetere siano solidi, solo un'analisi dell'utilizzo in campo clinico di questa metodica potrà fornire un reale parametro di giudizio sulle modalità di esecuzione della procedure nelle diverse realtà cliniche sul territorio nazionale. Per questo scopo è stato istituito il Registro Prospettico Italiano che raccoglie dati sull'efficacia e la sicurezza della denervazione renale a breve e a lungo termine. Tuttavia non sono ancora noti gli effetti della procedura sulla funzione renale, la proteinuria e il bilancio del sodio, in particolare nel lungo termine. Queste conoscenze potranno permettere di estendere le indicazioni attuali della procedura anche in altre condizioni patologiche caratterizzate da ipertono simpatico e di valutare l'impatto del costo-beneficio della denervazione renale come un potenziale trattamento alternativo alle tradizionali strategie farmacologiche.

Questo lavoro prende in considerazione gli aspetti tecnici, semeiologici ed applicativi della sequenza Fast Spin Echo (FSE) nello studio della patologia del distretto spinale. Tale sequenza può essere considerata una Spin Echo (SE) multieco, rapida, caratterizzata infatti da una drastica riduzione del tempo di acquisizione, rispetto alla SE, con conseguente riduzione degli artefatti da movimento e di disagi per i pazienti (specie se sofferenti e non collaboranti). Il tempo risparmiato può essere utilizzato per eseguire esami ad alta definizione, o altre sequenze e proiezioni lungo piani accessori. L'iconografia FSE è molto simile a quello ottenuta con la SE. In realtà esistono alcune lievi differenze semeiologiche che possono talvolta creare dei problemi di interpretazione e che pertanto bisogna tener presenti, quali la persistenza dell'iperintensità del grasso (anche in sequenza T2-W) e la riduzione degli effetti da suscettibilità magnetica. Importanti applicazioni sono l'«effetto mielografico», la possibilità di studiare ampi tratti di colonna (con FOV ampi e bobina del corpo) e di ottenere, con sequenze altamente pesate in T2 la soppressione del grasso e, con rielaborazione MIP, immagini tridimensionali simil-mielografiche.

L'autore, partendo da un caso clinico, si interroga sugli effetti psichici degli sconvolgimenti sociali, culturali e psichici dei giorni odierni aggravati dalla recente pandemia virale. Viene messo in evidenza l'andamento della psicoterapia prima e dopo l'insorgere della diffusione del contagio a cui hanno fatto seguito le limitazioni legate al confinamento e poi la campagna vaccinale incoraggiata dall'istituzione della carta verde. Anche il terapeuta è coinvolto in dinamiche patogene in cui la realtà entra prepotentemente nel processo terapeutico rischiando di alterare le regole del setting. Il paziente regredisce alla posizione schizoparanoide e sviluppa una sintomatologia delirante di tipo persecutorio facendo un uso massiccio di meccanismi difensivi come la scissione, il diniego, la proiezione e l'identificazione proiettiva. L'autore infine approfondisce il tema della paranoia, patologia che rischia di sfuggire ai sistemi diagnostici, che, spesso presente nella popolazione generale, si svela in momenti particolarmente traumatici.

Abstract Nel Sud Europa agricolo sono ormai realtà consolidata i cosiddetti ghetti, spazi di vita della componente migrante più fragile proveniente dal Sud globale e impiegata come forza lavoro bracciantile. Tali spazi vengono sovente inquadrati come confini della modernità occidentale, buchi neri in cui operano caporali che riproducono quelle che vengono definite come nuove schiavitù. In questo lavoro, partendo da una ricerca-azione svolta nel Sud Italia agricolo (Eboli), si propone di abbandonare una logica del confine e guardare alle modalità attraverso cui il ghetto diventa parte integrante del contesto più ampio, dei suoi modelli sociali, giuridici, economici. Situando l’etnografia sulle modalità attraverso cui l’intermediazione informale naviga queste strutture, il ghetto emerge come una frontiera, intesa non come confine ma come un avamposto che mostra gli effetti più violenti dei campi di forza che agiscono sulla riproduzione della presenza migrante.

Il Fiore è stato scritto da un giurista? Oggetto del presente studio è l’analisi di uno dei registri linguistici che compongono lo stile narrativo del Fiore, ovvero quello giuridico. In effetti, questo è uno dei criteri su cui si basano due tesi attributive, ovvero quella di Remo Fasani, che vuole l’opera figlia di Brunetto Latini, e quella di Maurizio Palma di Cesnola; quest’ultimo ha cercato di dimostrare che il testo, considerato dai più come dantesco, sarebbe in realtà stato scritto da un giurista provenzale, Guillaume Durand. Queste due tesi costituiscono lo spunto per poter prendere in esame le espressioni e i termini specifici legati al mondo giuridico e diplomatico, al fine di porre in rilievo questo aspetto stilistico del poemetto medievale. Oltre ai termini indicati da Fasani e da Palma di Cesnola, verranno sottolineati altri possibili indizi per un “Durante giurista”, nonché un certo atteggiamento “giuridico” a cui sono sottoposte alcune figure del testo, come Falsembiante o Ragione, anche per rilevare le differenze o i punti in comune tra Fiore e Roman de la Rose, modello dell’opera italiana, sia dal punto di vista delle scelte lessicali che dell'atmosfera generale.

L'articolo riporta un'esperienza di intervento di psicologia di cure primarie a Torino, nel quale vengono affrontati i temi più rilevanti, le caratteristiche, i punti di forza e le criticità di tali progetti. L'intento è quello di fornire informazioni e dati al fine di dare un ulteriore contributo al dibattito all'interno della comunità scientifica che porti alla creazione di servizi di psicologia di cure primarie a livello nazionale. Vengono presentati gli aspetti cruciali che caratterizzano il modello, accessibilità, gradualità, efficacia clinica e costo–efficacia. Accessibilità poiché tali servizi devono essere posizionati sul territorio, vicini ai luoghi di vita dei cittadini, flessibili e inclusivi. Gradualità poiché gli in-terventi debbono essere appropriati come intensità rispetto alle esigenze di salute. Efficacia cli-nica poiché è fondamentale dare il giusto trattamento al determinato disturbo del paziente. Co-sto-efficacia poiché gli interventi debbono essere appropriati al problema del paziente, tempe-stivi in modo da anticipare patologizzazione e cronicità, e inoltre devono svolgere una funzione di filtro per i servizi secondari e i dipartimenti di emergenza. Vengono altresì presentati alcuni risultati rispetto al medical cost offset di tali interventi, in particolare sugli effetti pre-post che l'intervento ha generato su prescrizioni farmacologiche, numero di invii ai servizi specialistici, e numero di visite dal medico di famiglia. Questi progetti nelle realtà internazionali più avanzate sono da tempo operanti, e le recenti vicende (Decreto Calabria) sono una testimonianza di quanto sia necessario realizzare tali ser-vizi. L'autore porta quindi alcune proposte in tal senso.

La variabilità della frequenza cardiaca (Heart Rate Variability, HRV) indica una fisiologica irregolarità degli intervalli battito-battito, e riflette l’attività del sistema nervoso autonomo. L’HRV si misura a partire dal tacogramma (la serie temporale degli intervalli battito-battito) ed è tipicamente analizzata nel dominio delle frequenze, con particolare interesse a due bande: 0.04-0.15 Hz (Low-Frequency, LF) e 0.15 – 0.4 Hz (High-Frequency, HF). È noto che stati emotivi ed attentivi modificano le oscillazioni in queste bande. Il presente lavoro ha riguardato lo studio della HRV di soggetti immersi in ambienti di realtà virtuale con l’obiettivo di investigare quali effetti tale immersione possa avere sulla distribuzione della potenza nelle bande LF e HF, e verificare la presenza di una possibile relazione tra le variazioni di tali parametri e il livello di gradimento/attenzione/coinvolgimento indotto dall’ambiente virtuale. Per lo studio della HRV sono stati utilizzati: i) il software ARTiiFACT, che mette a disposizione strumenti per estrarre dal segnale elettrocardiografico il tacogramma e per calcolarne la densità spettrale di potenza (e quindi la potenza nelle bande LF ed HF); ii) l’ambiente Matlab per rappresentare graficamente i risultati dell’analisi spettrale della HRV e per l’esecuzione di test statistici. I risultati hanno messo in evidenza una tendenza, anche se non significativa, del rapporto tra la potenza in banda LF e in banda HF ad aumentare quando il soggetto si immerge nella realtà virtuale. Inoltre, tale rapporto tende ad essere maggiore, seppur non significativamente, quando il soggetto si trova immerso nell’ambiente virtuale per il quale ha dimostrato una preferenza rispetto al valore riscontrato nell’altro ambiente.

Background: il Morbo di Parkinson (MdP) è una malattia neurodegenerativa che determina una condizione complessa data da sintomi motorie e non. Questa patologia viene gestita mediante la combinazione di terapia farmacologia dopaminergica e fisioterapia. La realtà virtuale (VR) si inserisce come strumento riabilitativo innovativo che potrebbe migliorare la condizione motoria e la qualità di vita dei pazienti.
Obiettivi: l’obiettivo principale di questa revisione è determinare i benefici della VR nei disturbi del balance, del cammino e nella qualità di vita dei pazienti.
Materiali e metodi: la ricerca è stata effettuata in diversi database di letteratura scientifica quali PUBMED, PEDro, COCHRANE LIBRARY e SCIENCE DIRECT da un unico revisore tra Maggio e Luglio 2020. Sono stati ricercati solo studi RCT che prevedevano l’utilizzo della VR per indagare gli effetti su balance, cammino e qualità di vita dei soggetti con diagnosi di MdP. Sono stati inclusi studi con partecipanti >65 anni, uno stadio di malattia secondo H-Y ≥2, un risultato al M.M.S.E. ≥24 e un’assunzione costante di terapia dopaminergica. Gli studi sono stati selezionati seguendo la procedura presente nel diagramma di flusso “PRISMA Flow Diagram”. Per l’analisi degli studi selezionati è stata utilizzata la scala PEDro.
Risultati: L’analisi degli RCT inclusi in questa revisione ha confermato che la riabilitazione dei pazienti affetti da MdP mediante VR induce maggiori benefici o effetti simili sugli outcome ricercati rispetto ai trattamenti “tradizionali”. Gli RCT inclusi presentano risultati migliori o simili rispetto ai rispettivi gruppi di controllo per capacità motorie e nella qualità di vita, sottolineando così il potenziale della VR nella MdP.
Conclusioni: la VR risulta essere sicura e più efficace o ugualmente efficace ai trattamenti fisioterapici “tradizionali” proposti negli ultimi anni per i disturbi del balance e del cammino, migliorando anche la qualità di vita dei soggetti con MdP.

La tesi si propone di rintracciare all’interno dell’ordinamento italiano una regola giuridica, quanto più generale possibile, suscettibile di applicazione al maggior numero di ipotesi in cui un atto giuridico determina l’alterazione di un ordine dato di priorità applicabile a pretese di azionisti e creditori di una società di capitali. Si rileva, infatti, che il diritto vivente delle garanzie reali possa spesso trovarsi in contrasto con un fondamentale principio di diritto dei contratti: quello di relatività dei loro effetti. Vengono, quindi, isolate, due classi di garanzie reali che, al contrario, risultano essere compatibili con il principio richiamato. Una più ampia regola viene, di seguito, proposta, basata sulla stessa logica che fonda l’istituto dei vantaggi compensativi, funzionale a regolare i fenomeni di alterazione di un ordine di priorità, a prescindere dalla natura della pretesa coinvolta. Essenzialmente, quest’ultima regola costituisce la trasposizione nel linguaggio e nel sistema giuridico del criterio di efficienza di Kaldor-Hicks. Dal lato dei diritti patrimoniali e nel prisma dei problemi “ordinali”, vengono individuate decisive somiglianze tra le pretese a titolo di debito e quelle a titolo di capitale di rischio, cosicché viene proposta l’applicazione di istituti classici del diritto azionario (ad es., il diritto di recesso) alla materia dei rapporti di credito. Definito l’ambito di applicazione dei diritti reali di garanzia e riconosciuta la maggior efficienza di strutture del passivo costruite prevalentemente sullo schema della subordinazione invece che su quello della preferenza, si propone di attuare un netto passaggio di sistema dal secondo schema al primo. Lo studio si conclude misurando i risultati ottenuti sugli analoghi fenomeni che si verificano nell’ambito della disciplina del sistema finanziario.This thesis aims at finding in the Italian legal system a general rule able to provide a guidance for the modification of the order of priority of claims against limited liability corporations. It is argued that the applicable legal approach to security interests could often be in contrast with a basic principle of contract law: relativity. Therefore, firstly, two classes of security interests that proved to be coherent with the aforementioned principle are described. Secondly, a wider rule based on a logic of compensation is put forward and tested on some particular cases. Basically, this rule is a transposition into legal terms of the well-known Kaldor-Hicks criterion. On the economic rights side, similarities are founded between credit claims and equity claims about order issues, so that the compensation rule is thought as applicable, almost equivalently, to both types of claims. Application to a certain class of creditors of “organizational rules” (for example, right of withdrawal) typically provided by law for shareholders is also suggested. Defined the scope of application of security interests and considered the efficiency gains that are achievable by subordination structures instead of priority ones, it is proposed to pursue the same goal of modifying a given order of priority, through subordination agreements. Finally, these results are discussed taking into account some financial law topics.

Perissinotto, Silvia <1990>. "Il task-based approach nasce negli anni '80 del secolo scorso e negli anni ha trovato ampio riscontro a livello mondiale. E' attualmente uno degli approcci maggiormente utilizzati nel campo dell'insegnamento linguistico grazie alla sua natura comunicativa; trova infatti le sue radici nel Communicative Language Teaching degli anni '70 con il quale condivide la forte contrapposizione per gli approcci basati sull'esposizione di rigide regole grammaticali. L'biettivo comunicativo che ci si pone nella progettazione dei task è strettamente legato all'autenticità delle attività, ovvero la loro concretezza e capacità di riprodurre situazioni di vita reale. L'approccio per task è fonte di ricerca in quanto dimostra essere particolarmente proficuo nelle classi di L2 e LS: i maggiori effetti sono riscontrabili sul miglioramento delle abilità comunicative dei discenti. Se da una parte la letteratura sul task-based approach è molto ampia e in fase di continua sperimentazione, un aspetto più ristretto che è stato considerato in misura minore è la sua efficacia all'interno di classi di principianti (basic user, secondo il quadro comune europeo di riferimento per la conoscenza delle lingue: livelli A1 e A2). Pochi ricercatori hanno finora investigato gli effetti dell'utilizzo di task su questo campo di discenti e i principali risultati ottenuti sono legati alle abilità di comprensione. Operando con apprendenti la competenza linguistica è ai primi stadi di sviluppo l'applicazione di attività di comprensione risulta limitante: è a questo proposito che l'orientamento suggerito dai ricercatori è quello di impiegare dapprima dei task che favoriscano la comprensione linguistica per poi passare ad attività di produzione. Despite significant efforts have been directed toward reducing waste generation and encouraging alternative waste management strategies, landfills still remain the main option for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposal in many countries. Hence, landfills and related impacts on the surroundings are still current issues throughout the world. Actually, the major concerns are related to the potential emissions of leachate and landfill gas into the environment, that pose a threat to public health, surface and groundwater pollution, soil contamination and global warming effects. To ensure environmental protection and enhance landfill sustainability, modern sanitary landfills are equipped with several engineered systems with different functions. For instance, the installation of containment systems, such as bottom liner and multi-layers capping systems, is aimed at reducing leachate seepage and water infiltration into the landfill body as well as gas migration, while eventually mitigating methane emissions through the placement of active oxidation layers (biocovers). Leachate collection and removal systems are designed to minimize water head forming on the bottom section of the landfill and consequent seepages through the liner system. Finally, gas extraction and utilization systems, allow to recover energy from landfill gas while reducing explosion and fire risks associated with methane accumulation, even though much depends on gas collection efficiency achieved in the field (range: 60-90% Spokas et al., 2006; Huitric and Kong, 2006). Hence, impacts on the surrounding environment caused by the polluting substances released from the deposited waste through liquid and gas emissions can be potentially mitigated by a proper design of technical barriers and collection/extraction systems at the landfill site. Nevertheless, the long-term performance of containment systems to limit the landfill emissions is highly uncertain and is strongly dependent on site-specific conditions such as climate, vegetative covers, containment systems, leachate quality and applied stress. Furthermore, the design and operation of leachate collection and treatment systems, of landfill gas extraction and utilization projects, as well as the assessment of appropriate methane reduction
strategies (biocovers), require reliable emission forecasts for the assessment of system feasibility and to ensure environmental compliance. To this end, landfill simulation models can represent an useful supporting tool for a better design of leachate/gas collection and treatment systems and can provide valuable information for the evaluation of best options for containment systems depending on their performances under the site-specific conditions. The capability in predicting future emissions levels at a landfill site can also be improved by combining simulation models with field observations at full-scale landfills and/or with experimental studies resembling landfill conditions. Indeed, this kind of data may allow to identify the main parameters and processes governing leachate and gas generation and can provide useful information for model refinement.
In view of such need, the present research study was initially addressed to develop a new landfill screening model that, based on simplified mathematical and empirical equations, provides quantitative estimation of leachate and gas production over time, taking into account for site-specific conditions, waste properties and main landfill characteristics and processes. In order to evaluate the applicability of the developed model and the accuracy of emissions forecast, several simulations on four full-scale landfills, currently in operative management stage, were carried out. The results of these case studies showed a good correspondence of leachate estimations with monthly trend observed in the field and revealed that the reliability of model predictions is strongly influenced by the quality of input data. In particular, the initial waste moisture content and the waste compression index, which are usually data not available from a standard characterisation, were identified as the key unknown parameters affecting leachate production. Furthermore, the applicability of the model to closed landfills was evaluated by simulating different alternative capping systems and by comparing the results with those returned by the Hydrological Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP), which is the most worldwide used model for comparative analysis of composite liner systems. Despite the simplified approach of the developed model, simulated values of infiltration and leakage rates through the analysed cover systems were in line with those of HELP.
However, it should be highlighted that the developed model provides an assessment of leachate and biogas production only from a quantitative point of view. The leachate and biogas composition was indeed not included in the forecast model, as strongly linked to the type of waste that makes the prediction in a screening phase poorly representative of what could be expected in the field. Hence, for a qualitative analysis of leachate and gas emissions over time, a laboratory methodology including different type of lab-scale tests was applied to a particular waste material. Specifically, the research was focused on mechanically biologically treated (MBT) wastes which, after the introduction of the European Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC (European Commission, 1999) that imposes member states to dispose of in landfills only wastes that have been preliminary subjected to treatment, are becoming the main flow waste landfilled in new Italian facilities. However, due to the relatively recent introduction of the MBT plants within the waste management system, very few data on leachate and gas emissions from MBT waste in landfills are available and, hence, the current knowledge mainly results from laboratory studies. Nevertheless, the assessment of the leaching characteristics of MBT materials and the evaluation of how the environmental conditions may affect the heavy metals mobility are still poorly investigated in literature. To gain deeper insight on the fundamental mechanisms governing the constituents release from MBT wastes, several leaching experiments were performed on MBT samples collected from an Italian MBT plant and the experimental results were modelled to obtain information on the long-term leachate emissions. Namely, a combination of experimental leaching tests were performed on fully-characterized MBT waste samples and the effect of different parameters, mainly pH and liquid to solid ratio (L/S,) on the compounds release was investigated by combining pH static-batch test, pH dependent tests and dynamic up-flow column percolation experiments. The obtained results showed that, even though MBT wastes were characterized by relatively high heavy metals content, only a limited amount was actually soluble and thus bioavailable. Furthermore, the information provided by the different tests highlighted the existence of a strong linear correlation between the release pattern of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and several metals (Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, V, Zn), suggesting that complexation to DOC is the leaching controlling mechanism of these elements. Thus, combining the results of batch and up-flow column percolation tests, partition coefficients between DOC and metals concentration were derived. These data, coupled with a simplified screening model for DOC release, allowed to get a very good prediction of metal release during the experiments and may
provide useful indications for the evaluation of long-term emissions from this type of waste in a landfill disposal scenario.
In order to complete the study on the MBT waste environmental behaviour, gas emissions from MBT waste were examined by performing different anaerobic tests. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential gas generation capacity of wastes and to assess possible implications on gas generation resulting from the different environmental conditions expected in the field. To this end, anaerobic batch tests were performed at a wide range of water contents (26-43 %w/w up to 75 %w/w on wet weight) and temperatures (from 20-25 °C up to 55 °C) in order to simulate different landfill management options (dry tomb or bioreactor landfills). In nearly all test conditions, a quite long lag-phase was observed (several months) due to the inhibition effects resulting from high concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and ammonia that highlighted a poor stability degree of the analysed material. Furthermore, experimental results showed that the initial waste water content is the key factor limiting the anaerobic biological process. Indeed, when the waste moisture was lower than 32 %w/w the methanogenic microbial activity was completely inhibited. Overall, the obtained results indicated that the operative conditions drastically affect the gas generation from MBT waste, in terms of both gas yield and generation rate. This suggests that particular caution should be paid when using the results of lab-scale tests for the evaluation of long-term behaviour expected in the field, where the boundary conditions change continuously and vary significantly depending on the climate, the landfill operative management strategies in place (e.g. leachate recirculation, waste disposal methods), the hydraulic characteristics of buried waste, the presence and type of temporary and final cover systems.

La teoria estetica del Bloomsbury Group che si dirama in linee antitetiche, nella fattispecia quella di Roger Fry, teorizzatore del postimpressionismo, e quella di Clive Bell, teorizzatore dell'astrattismo, viene da Woolf rielaborata nei termini di una mimesi letteraria che testimonia l'originalità della scrittrice sia in ambito modernista che postmodernista ante litteram.
Fondamentali interlocutori di Woolf, i due critici d'arte la ingaggiano infatti in una meditazione teorica sul potere mimetico del codice semiotico verbale che si concluderà in una presa di posizione postimpressionista e antiolistica anticipatoria di quanto il posmodernismo adotterà come suo tratto caratterizzante.My Ph.D thesis examines the development of the concept of form in the light of the Post-Impressionist aesthetics of Roger Fry and Clive Bell. While it is often assumed that Virginia Woolf works in their wake, their influence has not been examined in detail before. The dissertation draws attention to the polarity of the views on art which Roger Fry and Clive Bell as art critics pursued, and to the consequences these imply. Fry's and Bell's aesthetics are tested against Virginia Woolf's concern for art in general, and in particular against her statements on the artist in her novels and essays. After an introduction in which the general development of aesthetic criticism in the nineteenth century is traced, the critical ideas of Fry, his influence on Woolf, and the theories of Bell are explored in Chapters 2 to 4. Chapters 5 to 7 examine Woolf's use of their aesthetic ideas in the following novels: To the Lighthouse, The Waves, Between the Acts. Fryian concepts such as beauty, design, rhythm, texture, unity and vision are shown to play a crucial role in her fiction, which, if unacknowledged, limits our understanding of her artistic universe. These concepts represent the background on which all her experimental writing, her study of the re-presentation of reality through the medium of the novel, is based. Woolf's concern for form is thus shown to be a development from the rejection of the mimetic conventions towards abstraction. The extremity of this solution, however, proved its limitation. The predicament in which Bernard, the artist of The Waves, is entrapped directed Woolf away from Bell's decontextualized universe towards the equipoised vision of reality championed by Roger Fry in his work on Cézanne; this constituted the basis for her new concept of beauty, not as truth but as "pied beauty".

Dopo più di quarant’anni di tentativi tesi alla realizzazione di un titolo di protezione brevettuale “comunitario”, nel 2012 sono stati emanati due regolamenti, il n. 1257/2012 e il n. 1260/2012, attuativi di una cooperazione rafforzata tra ventisei Stati membri dell’Unione europea: essi creano un brevetto europeo con effetto unitario e ne disciplinano il regime di traduzione applicabile. L’anno successivo, venticinque Stati membri hanno firmato un accordo istitutivo del Tribunale unificato dei brevetti. I summenzionati strumenti normativi costituiscono il c.d. “pacchetto brevetti”, che entrerà in vigore una volta che almeno tredici Stati membri, tra cui Germania, Francia e Regno Unito, avranno ratificato l’Accordo. Rispetto al panorama attuale, caratterizzato da una frammentazione normativa e giurisdizionale, tale nuova architettura porterà indubbiamente notevoli vantaggi. Da un lato, infatti, i regolamenti europei introducono un “nuovo brevetto” che estende la sua efficacia oltre i confini nazionali; la portata della protezione e gli effetti saranno infatti uniformi in tutto il territorio degli Stati membri partecipanti. Dall’altro, il Tribunale unificato, competente a giudicare quasi tutte le controversie in materia brevettuale, si sostituirà ai giudici nazionali, garantendo l’uniformità della giurisdizione e delle decisioni. Tuttavia, il risultato ottenuto con il “pacchetto brevetti” non sembra essere adeguato agli obiettivi di unitarietà che le istituzioni europee e gli Stati membri si erano prefissati. Si tratta infatti di un quadro normativo complesso, che combina il diritto dell’Unione europea, il diritto internazionale (in particolare l’Accordo sul Tribunale unificato e la Convenzione sul brevetto europeo), e il diritto nazionale degli Stati membri, a cui gli atti citati rinviano in diverse occasioni, e che istituisce due strumenti, il brevetto europeo con effetto unitario e il Tribunale unificato dei brevetti, dalla natura assai controversa. Per tale ragione, la nuova normativa solleva molteplici questioni di natura costituzionale, in ordine alla compatibilità del nuovo sistema con l’ordinamento giuridico dell’Unione europea. Uno dei profili problematici di particolare interesse riguarda la cooperazione rafforzata in tema di tutela brevettuale unitaria, che sembra essere stata instaurata per eludere il dissenso di Italia e Spagna in relazione al regime linguistico applicabile. Inoltre, nei due regolamenti europei manca una vera e propria disciplina sostanziale, sollevando pertanto dei dubbi sull’effettiva “unitarietà” del nuovo brevetto. Infine, alcune caratteristiche del Tribunale unificato, quali la sua particolare struttura, il riparto interno delle competenze, il regime linguistico e la previsione di un periodo transitorio in cui è possibile ancora adire il giudice nazionale, si pongono in contrasto con il fine di unificazione giurisdizionale. A tali considerazioni si aggiunge che la decisione del Regno Unito di uscire dall’Unione europea potrebbe compromettere l’entrata in vigore del “pacchetto brevetti”. Obiettivo del presente lavoro è quello di analizzare in modo organico l’intera disciplina, nell’ottica di verificarne l’effettiva compatibilità con l’ordinamento dell’Unione europea. Solamente attraverso un approccio sistematico fondato sui principi e sugli strumenti dell’UE, si possono superare le attuali criticità che emergono dal “pacchetto brevetti”, nell’ottica di un effettivo miglioramento di tale nuova disciplina e del conseguente raggiungimento di una reale unitarietà nella tutela brevettuale.

Oggetto del presente lavoro è stata la tematica dei reati a concorso necessario (detti anche plurisoggettivi): una categoria penalistica scarsamente presa in considerazione da parte della dottrina e giurisprudenza più recenti, eppure dai risvolti sistematici di un certo rilievo, in quanto coinvolge profili sia di parte generale che speciale del diritto penale.
L’indagine è partita dal piano definitorio e classificatorio: sono state riportate dettagliatamente le diverse tesi dottrinali sviluppatesi sul tema (suddivisibili in due macrocategorie, quella dei sostenitori di una concezione ampia di reato a concorso necessario e quella dei sostenitori di una concezione ristretta dello stesso), nonché le pronunce della Cassazione ritenute maggiormente significative. Un’attenzione particolare è stata dedicata alla delimitazione – in negativo – del campo d’indagine, tracciando le differenze intercorrenti fra i reati a concorso necessario (o plurisoggettivi, a seconda della terminologia impiegata) ed istituti ritenuti erroneamente contigui, primo fra tutti quello del concorso eventuale di persone nel reato.
Dopodiché, all’interno del secondo capitolo si è scelto di riflettere sulle questioni maggiormente rilevanti e problematiche attinenti ai reati a concorso necessario impropri: in primis, la ratio che giustifica l’esenzione dalla pena in capo ad un soggetto; secondariamente, la possibilità di punire o meno la condotta tipica, nonché le eventuali condotte atipiche, poste in essere dal soggetto non punibile per mezzo dell’applicazione degli artt. 110 ss. c.p. in funzione incriminatrice.
La panoramica di orientamenti dottrinali e giurisprudenziali quanto mai oscillanti e fra loro divergenti su questioni di particolare importanza, non è stata solo funzionale ad offrire al lettore una dettagliata ricognizione in generale, piuttosto, da questa è scaturita una vera e propria esigenza di (ri)considerare l’intera materia in modo organico e chiarificatore.
Per tale ragione, nel terzo capitolo è stata introdotta una nuova definizione, in sostituzione a quella maggiormente impiegata da dottrina e giurisprudenza: “fattispecie incriminatrici normativamente plurisoggettive”. Una definizione idonea a ricomprendere tutti quegli illeciti penali che, a livello astratto, presentano caratteristiche simili: il riscontro di una pluralità di soggetti e di condotte quali elementi costitutivi del fatto tipico. Pertanto, si è cercato di individuare i confini della categoria assumendo quale criterio di partenza il piano normativo astratto, in considerazione del fatto che ciò che il legislatore ha scelto di codificare come tipo criminoso è dato dall’insieme degli elementi oggettivi e soggettivi, i quali compaiono nella descrizione della norma incriminatrice. La visione d’insieme ha permesso di non limitare l’attenzione al solo soggetto punibile, bensì di spostarla anche sul soggetto non punibile, il quale, con la sua condotta rientrante fra gli elementi oggettivi del fatto tipico, contribuisce alla configurabilità del reato.
Infine, all’interno del quarto capitolo si è proceduto all’analisi dei principali reati classificati da parte della dottrina come a concorso necessario impropri, per verificare, tenuto conto della nuova definizione proposta, se possano o meno essere qualificati come fattispecie incriminatrici normativamente plurisoggettive improprie. Il confronto con la parte speciale ha permesso di evidenziare l’estrema delicatezza dell’operazione d’individuazione di fattispecie incriminatrici normativamente plurisoggettive (in senso lato): anzitutto, perché non sempre la pluralità di soggetti e di condotte costitutive del fatto tipico è oggetto di descrizione espressa, risultando alle volte ricavabile solo a seguito di un attento esame della tipologia e del significato delle parole impiegate dal legislatore; secondariamente, perché alle volte è facile lasciarsi confondere dal piano naturalistico della realtà concreta, mentre l’individuazione di una fattispecie incriminatrice in termini di plurisoggettività normativa dovrebbe avvenire, secondo l’impostazione adottata, a partire dal piano normativo astratto.
Da ultimo, ci si è soffermati sul ruolo del soggetto non punibile che tenga rispettivamente la condotta tipica o una condotta ulteriore e diversa da quella descritta, cercando di offrire una possibile soluzione al problema. Nel primo caso, si è concluso per l’impossibilità di applicare l’art. 110 c.p. in funzione incriminatrice, pena la violazione delle garanzie proprie del sistema penalistico. Nel secondo, invece, si è concluso in senso affermativo, precisando che l’interprete è tenuto a prestare attenzione a diversi aspetti, fra cui il tipo d’equilibrio intercorrente fra le condotte dei soggetti parte della fattispecie incriminatrice normativamente plurisoggettiva impropria, nonché l’alterità effettiva della condotta atipica rispetto a quella descritta, pena la violazione dei principi di legalità, tipicità e certezza del diritto.

Il periodo compreso fra Medioevo ed Età Moderna registra una significativa evoluzione del welfare, attraverso il consolidamento e la specializzazione di istituzioni nate o trasformatesi con la precisa funzione di fare attività di solidarietà e assistenza. È attorno a queste istituzioni che si sono concentrate le ricerche raccolte in questo volume, con l’obiettivo di delinearne la nascita e l’evoluzione, ma anche le fonti di finanziamento e autofinanziamento, le strategie e le modalità di acquisizione delle risorse, la gestione e la evoluzione dei patrimoni, l’organizzazione funzionale e i costi interni di sostegno ai bisognosi e di gestione del personale. Quelle istituzioni giocarono spesso un ruolo significativo nel territorio in cui operavano e numerosi contributi si soffermano sugli effetti economici e sociali prodotti dalla loro azione, non solo in termini di redistribuzione del reddito e mantenimento della pace sociale, ma anche in relazione all’eventuale rapporto con la realtà produttiva, grazie all’immissione sul mercato di prodotti e servizi svolti dagli assistititi o dal personale dell’istituzione. Un’ultima sezione è infine dedicata alle reti di assistenza non formali (solidarietà e forme di credito in seno alle famiglie, ai gruppi di indigenti, alle comunità), attraverso le quali gli individui, le comunità e l’intera società, in assenza o carenza di strutture formalizzate, tentarono di proteggersi dai rischi legati all’indigenza e alla incapacità fisica.

Cosa hanno in comune gli studi raccolti in questo volume, su autori così disparati come Conte, Palazzeschi, Zanzotto, Caproni, Rosselli, Biagini, alcuni poeti crepuscolari, Leopardi, Annovi, Giuliani, e perfino certe traduzioni novecentesche di R.M. Rilke? La convinzione che la parola poetica – etimologicamente ‘creatrice’ – generi prospettive cognitive che alterano la nostra percezione del mondo. La lettura della poesia non ha un effetto confinato alla pagina e al momento, ma incide sul nostro rapporto con la realtà, lo cambia e lo arricchisce in maniera spesso insospettabile e sorprendente. In questa raccolta, si cerca dunque di far emergere una sorta di epistemologia della poesia, di chiarire insomma come essa contribuisca ad illuminare la nostra esperienza del mondo e di noi stessi. Il lettore è allora invitato a guardare al di fuori dei confini tradizionalmente stabiliti dalle diverse discipline, in una direzione che è quella della contaminazione reciproca e dell’apertura a suggestioni innovative ed inedite.

Si può muovere una critica al metodo tradizionale di concepire le invalidità degli atti nel processo penale, così fermamente improntato alla legalità formale: esso non sembra più in grado di rappresentare efficacemente la realtà. La tradizione culturale dominante, in questo settore, appare sempre più lontana sia dal raffigurare il fenomeno, sia dall’instradarne idealmente lo sviluppo, a tal punto che vien da chiedersi se non sia il caso di cercare nuovi paradigmi di riferimento. La ricerca qui condotta si concentra sul tema del pregiudizio effettivo, per verificare se e come sia possibile adottare, nel sistema italiano, un simile parametro quando ci si appresti a stabilire se un atto processuale sia invalido. L’operazione appare a prima vista delicata, e aperta a forti critiche, aprendo il varco a modelli, sistemi di ragionamento e approcci distanti da quelli che fanno parte della nostra tradizione culturale. Si potrebbe sostenere, in senso radicalmente contrario, che compito della dottrina sia principalmente riaffermare i principi e metodi consolidati, senza accettare compromessi – spesso discutibili sul piano sistematico – con le evoluzioni proposte dalla casistica. Il rischio, tuttavia, e quello di finire per subire una trasformazione epocale invece di provare a governarla. Se non si vuole accettare d’esser relegati al solo ruolo di passiva testimonianza, occorre dunque provare a interferire con i mutamenti in atto, cercando di innestarvi razionalità: del resto, questa dovrebbe essere, da sempre, la ragione fondativa della dottrina, nell’ambito delle scienze sociali.

The EBA Guidelines on loan origination and monitoring (hereinafter "GL LOM") undoubtedly represent a substantially new piece of the banking regulatory framework. In fact, for the first time, the regulator moves into a topic that was traditionally outside the scope of financial regulation, so far almost exclusively focused on aspects directly linked to both micro- and macro-prudential stability, notably through capital and liquidity management requirements and guidelines on Business Model and Internal Governance. The credit management process, and in particular loan origination and monitoring, has always been typically considered as a business issue under sole responsibility of banks, as it is considered one of the "core" processes (if not the "core" process) of the banking business. As a matter of fact, since the issue of the capital requirement regulation (i.e., Basel II and Basel III), and the introduction of the use requirements for the rating systems, the regulator moved very close, but not yet, to prescribe specific credit assessment criteria, while dictating methodological and organizational requirements for the authorization of the rating systems, and leaving substantial freedom to banks to define their own models and embedded assessment criteria and indicators. With the GL LOM, the regulator takes a further step, remarkably beyond its traditional remit, dictating principles and rules for the evaluation of the credit quality of borrowers. The starting point for this new approach from the regulator can be found in the ECB guidelines on Non-Performing Loans, later endorsed by the Bank of Italy Guidelines for Less Significant Banks, aimed at encouraging banks to define their NPL management processes and establish reduction plans to achieve NPL ratio targets in line with the regulator's expectations. Consistently with the focus on NPL, the regulation on Calendar Provisioning, amending the CRR was issued; as being a Regulation, it involves all banks, and not only significant ones (for which the ECB Addendum also applies). In addition, the new definition of default (the so-called "new Dod") has defined stricter criteria for the transition of exposures to the default status and also made the return of "cured" exposures to the performing status more difficult. The combined effect of these regulatory changes has been to make the default of counterparties not only more probable but also much more "expensive" for the banks. The natural “next step” of these regulatory changes was to "move backward" into the management process covering loan origination and monitoring . The EBA's stated objective with the issuance of the GL LOM is to define "robust and prudent" standards of lending practices so as to maintain a low level of NPLs in the future. Therefore, the focus of the GL LOM is the definition of requirements (some outlined as prescriptions, others in terms of principles) for the creditworthiness assessment of counterparties and for the management of the related data and information. Notwithstanding the fact that the Final Report has articulated the principle of proportionality much more clearly as compared to the Consultation Paper, the GLs set out three macro-categories of counterparties for which specific requirements are defined: • Individuals • Micro and small businesses • Medium and large companies. The GL LOM also provide recommendations about the valuation of guarantees both at origination and during ongoing monitoring, encouraging the use of advanced statistical models. The GL LOM focus on real estate guarantees, while financial collateral is outside the scope of the GL LOM. In the mind of the regulator, the GL LOM should not only reflect industry practices, but also incorporate the latest supervisory guidance on lending, and provide the stimulus to include ESG, AML/CTF and the use of innovative technologies into banking origination and, where applicable, monitoring processes.

Chapter six discusses the effects produced by Pasolini’s vocal performance in his films. Pasolini’s voice changes according to the function attributed to his authorial presence. It is his real voice when he presents himself as the author, as in film experiments such as Appunti per un’Orestiade Africana (Notes Toward an African Orestes, 1970) and Comizi d’amore (Love Meetings, 1963). However, when he plays a character in a fictional narrative, as in the case of The Trilogy of Life, his voice is dubbed. In this chapter I examine the difference between these two kinds of voice, showing that also dubbing and voiceover are elements of the performance of Pasolini’s authorship. I focus particularly on dubbing in Edipo re (Oedipus Rex, 1967), where Pasolini played the apparently marginal role of the High Priest. Pasolini’s use of his actual voice, as in the case of the voiceover in La sequenza del fiore di carta (The Sequence of the Paper Flower, 1969) and La Ricotta shows the author’s epistemic authority and control over the interpretation of his work. He particularly emphasizes the importance of his vocal performance in Love Meetings, a cinéma vérité experiment in which he interviews Italian people of all kind on issues concerning sexuality. However, when the questions turn to homosexuality, Pasolini silences his own voice (and authority), in order to reveal the homophobic violence of 1960s Italian society, unfiltered. Pasolini’s silence thus produces a subtle and subversive homopolitical intervention, which anticipates the more militant and strategic use of homosexual desire in The Trilogy of Life.

Le aree urbane centrali, storiche e non, hanno dimostrato, nell’ultimo quindicennio, una
straordinaria vitalità e una sorprendente capacità di mettere in atto strategie di rilancio. A
dispetto di un annunciato, ma mai verificatosi, declino epocale del proprio ruolo, le realtà urbane
continuano a presentarsi come un luogo privilegiato di crescita economica e di sperimentazione
sociale e culturale, e si rivelano oggi autonome protagoniste, inserendosi nei circuiti economici
innovativi, attirando dall’esterno nuove risorse, finanziarie ed umane, ed incrementando flussi
turistici e culturali. Molte operazioni di riqualificazione di siti industriali e portuali sono state
completate, producendo effetti positivi nell’attrazione di nuove attività e di investimenti e benefici
in termini di miglioramento della qualità urbana. Nonostante la prefigurazione di realtà in cui la
diffusione delle tecnologie telematiche e le forme di produzione e comunicazione immateriale,
avrebbero determinato decentramenti e indifferenze localizzative, nelle città si assiste ad una
rinnovata concentrazione delle più importanti funzioni politiche, direzionali, strategiche e
finanziarie, nonché ad una consolidata importanza delle interazioni face-to-face, che restano un
fattore rilevante per la costituzione di reti funzionali ad attività lavorative. Questi temi hanno
caratterizzato la Sessione Rigenerazione urbana vs Sprawl. In the last 15 years, central urban areas demonstrated a particular vitality and an amazing
capacity to put in place recovery strategies. In spite of an announced, but never happened,
epochal decline of their role, urban realities continue to present themselves like a privileged
place of economic growth and social and cultural experimentation. They appear as independent
protagonists, inserting themselves in innovative economic circuits, attracting new finance and
human resource from the outside, increasing tourist and cultural flows. A lot of industrial and
port sites renovation have been completed having a positive effect in attracting new activities,
investments and improvement of urban quality. In spite of forecasts of a reality in which the
broadcast of technologies and immaterial form of production and communication would have led
to decentralization and indifference as to localization, inside the city, there is a refocusing of the
most important political, strategic, management and financial functions, as well as consolidation
of the importance of interactions “face – to – face”, that are a really important factor for the
constitution of a new functional network and work activities. These themes have characterized
the Session Urban Regeneration vs Sprawl.

The powering issue of a high-speed marine vehicle with multi-hulls is addressed, since there is an often need to quickly evaluate the effects of several configuration parameters in the early stage of ship design. For component hulls with given geometry, the parameters considered include the relative locations of individual hulls and the relative volumetric ratios. Within the realm of linearized theory, an interference resistance expression for hull-to-hull interaction is first reviewed, and then a new formula for hull-and-pressure distribution interference is derived. Each of these analytical expressions is expressed in terms of the Fourier signatures or Kochin functions of the interacting components, with the separation, stagger, and speed as explicit parameters. Based on this framework, examples are given for assessing the performance of a di-hull as opposed to a tetra-hull system. Also examined is the wave resistance generated by a Surface-Effect Ship (SES) in comparison with that by a baseline catamaran, subject to the constraint of constant total displacement.

Abstract This study investigated the effect of combustion chamber geometry and initial mixture distribution on combustion process in a direct-injection diesel engine by means of experiment and CFD calculation. The high squish combustion chamber with squish lip could produce simultaneous reduction of NOx and particulate emissions with retarded injection timing in the real engine experiment. According to the CFD computation, the high squish combustion chamber with central pip is effective to continue combustion under the squish lip until the end of combustion and the combustion region forms rich and high turbulence atmosphere, which reduces NOx emissions. This chamber can also reduce initial burning because combustion continues under the squish lip. The CFD computation is also carried out in order to investigate the effect of initial mixture distribution on combustion process. The results suggest that mixture distribution affects the history of heat release rate. When fuel is distributed in the bottom or wide region in the combustion chamber, burned gas tends to spread to the cavity center and initial heat release rate becomes high. On the contrary, the high squish combustion chamber with central pip produces lower initial heat release rate because combustion with local rich condition continues long under the squish lip. Diffusion burning is promoted by high swirl motion in this chamber with keeping lower initial heat release rate.

This paper presents the results of a wide experimental study on an H-type Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) carried out at Politecnico di Milano in the frame of the national founded project PRIN 2009. The experiments were carried out in the large-scale wind tunnel of the Politecnico di Milano, where real-scale wind turbines for micro generation can be tested in full similarity conditions. Integral torque and thrust measurements were performed, as well as detailed aerodynamic measurements to characterize the flow field generated by the turbine downstream of the rotor. The machine was tested in both confined and non-confined environment, to highlight the effect of wind tunnel blockage on the aerodynamics and performance of the VAWT under investigation. The experimental results, compared with the blockage correlations presently available, suggest that specific correction models should be developed for VAWTs. The experimental thrust and power curves of the turbine, derived from integral measurements, exhibit the expected trends with a peak power coefficient of about 0.28 at tip-speed ratio λ = 2.5. Detailed flow measurements, performed in three conditions for λ equal to 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5, show the fully three-dimensional character of the wake, especially in the tip region where a non-symmetrical wake and tip vortex are found. The unsteady evolution of the velocity and turbulence fields further highlight the effect of aerodynamic loading on the wake unsteadiness, showing the time-dependent nature of the tip vortex and the onset of a non-symmetric dynamic stall for λ lower than 2.

Abstract This article presents a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) methodology developed at Politecnico di Milano (PoliMi) to perform wind tunnel tests on floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs). The 6-DOFs HIL setup is presented, focusing on the main differences with respect to a previous 2-DOFs system. Aerodynamic, rotor and control related loads, physically reproduced by the wind turbine scale model, must be measured in real-time and integrated with the platform numerical model. These forces contribute to couple wind turbine and floating platform dynamics and their correct reproduction is of fundamental importance for the correct simulation of the floating system behavior. The procedure developed to extract rotor loads from the available measurements is presented, discussing its limitations and the possible uncertainties introduced in the results. Results from verification tests in no-wind conditions are presented and analyzed to identify the main uncertainty sources and quantify their effect on the reproduction of the floating wind turbine response to combined wind and waves.

This paper presents the numerical and experimental implementation of a 2 degrees-of-freedom (DoF) setup for simulating the surge and pitch motion of OC5 semi submersible floating offshore wind turbine, through the “hardware-in-the-loop” (HIL) approach during wind tunnel tests. This approach is hybrid since a real-time combination of computations and measurements are carried out during the experiments. This allows to separate the model tests of floating wind turbines into wave/ocean basin and wind tunnel tests, as it is currently done within the H2020/LIFES50+ project respectively at Marintek (Norway) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy), with the possibility of exploiting the advantages of each facility and overcoming the scaling issues and conflicts (e.g. Froude-Reynolds) that are emphasized when it comes to testing both wind and wave in a single test facility. In this paper the modelling approach and experimental implementation are presented, with a special focus on signals and data handling in the real-time HIL control system aimed at minimizing the effect of model/full scale discrepancies. Results are shown for free decays, regular and irregular sea states, showing promising results for the next 6-DoF system being finalized.

Abstract This paper presents the main results of an experimental campaign about the DeepCwind semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT), that was carried out at Politecnico di Milano wind tunnel, adopting a hybrid hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing technique. Differently from previous works by the authors, this further analysis herein reported, is specifically focused on evaluating the effects of aerodynamic loads on the FOWT platform motions. In order to reproduce the FOWT response to combined wind and waves in a wind tunnel, exploiting the high-quality flow, a HIL system was used. The aerodynamic and rotor loads were reproduced by means of a wind turbine scale model operating inside the wind tunnel and were combined with numerically generated wave loads for real-time integration of the FOWT rigid-body motion equations. The resulting platform motions were imposed to the wind turbine scale model by a hydraulic actuation system. A series of HIL tests was performed to assess the rotor loads effect on the FOWT response. Free-decay tests in still water under laminar un-sheared wind were carried out to evaluate how the aerodynamic forcefield modifies the platform modes frequency and damping. Irregular wave tests for different steady winds were performed to investigate the dependency of platform motion from the wind turbine operating conditions. A FAST v8 model of the studied floating system was developed to support the analysis and numerical simulations were performed to reproduce environmental conditions equivalent to those of the experimental tests. The FAST model prediction capability is discussed against HIL wind tunnel tests results.

Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion makes use of in-cylinder blending of two fuels with differing reactivity to tailor the reactivity of the fuel charge for improved control of the combustion process. This approach has been shown in simulations and engine experiments to have the potential for high efficiency with very low NOX and particulate matter (PM) emissions. Previous multi-cylinder RCCI experiments have been completed to understand the potential of this approach under more real-world conditions in a light-duty multi-cylinder engine (MCE) with production viable hardware. MCE experiments explored fuel injection strategy, dilution levels, piston geometry (including compression ratio), and fuel properties. Many renewable fuels have unique properties which enable expanded operation of advanced combustion methods for higher engine efficiency and lower energy requirements for emissions control devices. This study investigates the effect that renewable gasoline and diesel fuel replacements have on the load-expansion of RCCI, performance and emissions. The study focuses on ethanol blends for replacement of gasoline as the port-injected fuel (PFI) and biodiesel blends as the replacement for the direct injected (DI) fuel.

For a pilot-main injection strategy in a single cylinder light duty diesel engine, the dwell between the pilot- and main-injection events can significantly impact combustion noise. As the solenoid energizing dwell decreases below 200 μs, combustion noise decreases by approximately 3 dB and then increases again at shorter dwells. A zero-dimensional thermodynamic model has been developed to capture the combustion-noise reduction mechanism; heat-release profiles are the primary simulation input and approximating them as top-hat shapes preserves the noise-reduction effect. A decomposition of the terms of the underlying thermodynamic equation reveals that the direct influence of heat-release on the temporal variation of cylinder-pressure is primarily responsible for the trend in combustion noise. Fourier analyses reveal the mechanism responsible for the reduction in combustion noise as a destructive interference in the frequency range between approximately 1 kHz and 3 kHz. This interference is dependent on the timing of increases in cylinder-pressure during pilot heat-release relative to those during main heat-release. The mechanism by which combustion noise is attenuated is fundamentally different from the traditional noise reduction that occurs with the use of long-dwell pilot injections, for which noise is reduced primarily by shortening the ignition delay of the main injection. Band-pass filtering of measured cylinder-pressure traces provides evidence of this noise-reduction mechanism in the real engine. When this close-coupled pilot noise-reduction mechanism is active, metrics derived from cylinder-pressure such as the location of 50% heat-release, peak heat-release rates, and peak rates of pressure rise cannot be used reliably to predict trends in combustion noise. The quantity and peak value of the pilot heat-release affect the combustion noise reduction mechanism, and maximum noise reduction is achieved when the height and steepness of the pilot heat-release profile are similar to the initial rise of the main heat-release event. A variation of the initial rise-rate of the main heat-release event reveals trends in combustion noise that are the opposite of what would happen in the absence of a close-coupled pilot. The noise-reduction mechanism shown in this work may be a powerful tool to improve the tradeoffs among fuel efficiency, pollutant emissions, and combustion noise.

Development in self-healing materials and smart composites has continuously improved for many decades and has given rise to many real-life applications with implications for engineering materials, structures, and human beings who rely on these technological innovations to further human endeavor. This study involves the use of intrinsic selfhealing ability of poly (ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) thermoplastic, known by its commercial name as Surlyn 9520©, and combined two-way shape memory effect with Di cumyl-peroxide (DCP) cross-linked polybutadiene elastomer to achieve crack narrowing and closure with subsequent healing of the polymer blend surface. The simple batch mixing process resulted in an immiscible yet compatible blend, determined by two distinct melting peaks from DSC characterization and FTIR spectroscopy analysis. Different blends ratios of 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50 were investigated and characterized. However, the 80/20 blend was chosen to demonstrate the significance of the two-way shape memory effect, where a material experiences elongation upon cooling and contraction upon heating to achieve crack closure and effectual healing. Two sets of samples were studied; control Sample known as 2A and 2B samples were one time programmed to about 300% strain. Self-healing, which is a function of the poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic) acid component of the blend, was established for both sets of specimens. The flexural properties from three-point bending test indicate that although both sets of samples achieved good healing efficiencies, the 2B programmed samples displayed better healing efficiencies than the control by 30%.
