Texto completoThe thesis focuses on the propagation of Bessel beams in a photorefractive crystal, involving technologies used in advanced optical communications, such as the all-optical router, switcher, mode multiplexing and demultiplexing using orbital angular momentum (OAM). The work is in two parts: the photo-inscription of waveguides and the modulation of OAM modes. In the first part, we demonstrate numerically and experimentally that a single diffracting Bessel beam can induce complex waveguides under the PR effect. In addition, by manipulating the parameters of our optical platform, we achieve flexible control of the induced waveguides’ characteristics. By testing these photo-induced waveguides using Gaussian probe beams, we confirm their complex routing functions. Furthermore, by introducing the second counter-propagating beam, we induce dynamic waveguides and demonstrate the control in any regime. In the second part, we demonstrated in simulations and experiments that the OAM of an arbitrarily polarized Bessel beam can be continuously modulated in the PR crystal by the applied electric field. By discussing parameter, we confirm optimal parameters to obtain the broadest modulation range in the steady state. We propose temporal plateaux long enough on which the OAM exceeds its initial value, thus enabling the extension of the OAM modulation range, even in the unstable regime. All the results in this thesis open up promising prospects for developing new technologies in all-optical or quantum communications

Texto completoToroidal flows are found to improve the performance of the magnetic confinement devices with increase of the plasma stability and confinement. In ITER or future reactors, the torque from NBI should be less important than in present-day tokamaks. Consequently, it is of interest to study other intrinsic mechanisms that can give rise to plasma rotation in order to predict the rotation profile in experiments. Intriguing observations of plasmas rotation have been made in radio frequency (RF) heated plasmas with little or no external momentum injection. Toroidal rotation in both the direction of the plasma current (co-current) and in the opposite direction (counter-current) has been observed depending on the heating schemes and plasma performance. In Tore Supra, most observations in L-mode plasmas have been in the counter-current direction. However, in this thesis, we show that in lower hybrid current drive (LHCD), the core toroidal rotation increment is in co- or counter-current direction depending on the plasma current amplitude. At low plasma current the rotation change is in the co-current direction while at high plasma current, the change is in the counter-current direction. In both low and high plasma current cases, rotation increments are found to increase linearly with the injected LH power. Several mechanisms in competition which can induce co- or counter-current rotation in Tore Supra LHCD plasmas are investigated and typical order of magnitude are discussed in this thesis

Texto completoPairing correlations is an essential component for the description of the atomic nuclei. The effects of pairing on static property of nuclei are now well known. In this thesis, the effect of pairing on nuclear dynamics is investigated. Theories that includes pairing are benchmarked in a model case. The TDHF+BCS theory turns out to be a good compromise between the physics taken into account and the numerical cost. This TDHF+BCS theory was retained for realistic calculations. Nevertheless, the application of pairing in the BCS approximation may induce new problems due to (1) the particle number symmetry breaking, (2) the non-conservation of the continuity equation. These difficulties are analysed in detail and solutions are proposed. In this thesis, a 3 dimensional TDHF+BCS code is developed to simulate the nuclear dynamic. Applications to giant resonances show that pairing modify only the low lying peaks. The high lying collective components are only affected by the initial conditions. An exhaustive study of the giant quadrupole resonances with the TDHF+BCS theory is performed on more than 700 spherical or deformed nuclei. Is is shown that the TDHF+BCS theory reproduces well the collective energy of the resonance. After validation on the small amplitude limit problem, the approach was applied to study nucleon transfer in heavy ion reactions. A new method to extract transfer probabilities is introduced. It is demonstrated that pairing significantly increases the two-nucleon transfer probability

Texto completoNuclear data allow to describe how a particle interacts with matter. These data are therefore at the basis of neutron transport and reactor physics calculations. Once measured and evaluated, they are given in libraries as a list of parameters. Before they can be used in neutron transport calculations, processing is required which includes taking into account several physical phenomena. This can be done by several softwares, such as NJOY, which all have the drawback to use old numerical methods derived from the same algorithms. For nuclear safety applications, it is important to rely on independent methods, to have a comparison point and to isolate the effects of the treatment on the final results. Moreover, it is important to properly master processing accuracy during its different steps. The objective of this PhD is then to develop independent numerical methods that can guarantee nuclear data processing within a given precision and to implement them practically, with the creation of the GAIA software. Our first step was the reconstruction of cross sections from the parameters given in libraries, with different approximations of the R-matrix theory. Reconstruction using the general formalism, without any approximation, has also been implemented, which has required the development of a new method to calculate the R-matrix. Tests have been performed on all existing formalisms, including the newest one. They have shown a good agreement between GAIA and NJOY. Reconstruction of angular differential cross sections directly from R-matrix parameters, using the Blatt-Biedenharn formula, has also been implemented and tested. The cross sections we have obtained at this point correspond to a target nucleus at absolute zero temperature. Because of thermal agitation, these cross sections are subject to a Doppler effect that is taken into account by integrating them with Solbrig's kernel. Our second step was then to calculate this integral. First, we have elaborated and validated a reference method that is precise but slow. Then, we have developed a new method based on Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. Comparisons with the reference method suggest that the precision of our method is better than the one achieved with NJOY, with comparable computation times. Besides, we have adapted this method to the case where target nuclei are in a condensed state (solid or liquid). For this latter case, an alternative implementation was done to obtain cross sections by integrating the S(a,b) law that characterize the chemical binding effect on collisions between neutrons and matter. Finally, a method was developed to generate an energy grid fine enough to allow a linear interpolation of cross sections between its points. At this point, we have at our disposal the minimum amount of information required to produce input files for the Monte-Carlo transport code MCNP. Such data have been translated into the correct format thanks to a module of NJOY. Calculations have been performed using our input files on several configurations, to demonstrate that our methods can actually be used to process modern evaluated files. In parallel, as part of a collaboration with Institut Laue-Langevin, we have participated in the treatment of experimental measurements of the S(a,b) law for light and heavy water. With GAIA, we have combined experimental values with values from a molecular dynamics simulation, with the objective to avoid using a molecular model in the domain where experimental values are available. This has only been a first step, but the values obtained improves the predictions of the model of ILL reactor. As a conclusion, during this PhD, new numerical methods were developed and we have shown that they can be used in practical cases

Texto completoThe purpose of this study was to examine some physiological muscle adaptations to strengthening. The effects of monoangular isometric strength training using Electrical Stimulation (ES) or Voluntary Contraction (CV) upon the Torque-Length relationship and the electromyographic activity of the agonist and antagonist muscles were compared. Maximum Voluntary Isometric Force was significantly increased beth by electrical stimulation and voluntary contraction. The two training modes yielded similar results when the electrically evoked torque and the isometric flexion torque exerced on the ergometric device, along the training sessions were equal. In this way, the increase of voluntary strength was specific to the training angle with beth training procedures. Moreover some electromyagraphic evidence was revealed with ES and CV training indicating a greater increase in the motor unit activation of the agonist at the training. So that, a neural adaptation to training seems to be unavoidable even with electrical stimulation training. This neural mechanism would be driven by the level of the isometric torque exerced on the ergometric device. We emphasize the rôle of the postural muscle in the process of strength development

Texto completoSince its first observation, a decade ago, high harmonic generation (HHG) in crystals has proved to be an efficient, controllable and compact source of coherent XUV radiation. In this thesis, we investigate HHG in 2D materials, particularly graphene, and in different semiconductor crystals mainly zinc oxide, silicon, gallium arsenide and magnesium oxide. We find that the laser properties, such as its intensity, polarization and ellipticity, and the crystal properties are interrelated. Moreover, we shed the light on the role of the linear and nonlinear propagation effects mainly the Kerr effect, upon laser interaction with the crystal, which can significantly influence the high harmonic generation efficiency. Although this presents major limitations, we show that in some cases it turns out to be an advantage. Finally, we demonstrate the manipulation of the harmonic radiation at the source of the emission by patterning nanostructures to confine and enhance nanojoule laser pulses, and generate harmonic beams carrying orbital angular momentum. Lastly, we successfully image a micrometer-sized sample by the coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) technique based on solid-state harmonics

Texto completoThe investigation of ionization dynamics of atoms and molecules illuminated with intense laser fields has attracted a great of interest in many disciplines over the decades. In this context, experiments of laser-matter interaction on the exploration of underlying mechanisms are considerably expanding with the advent of ultrashort femtosecond and attosecond laser pulses. However, the description of the laser irradiation process from a theoretical perspective is still a challenge, in particular for complex systems, such as the fullerene C60. To that end, we turn to exploit a fully fledged approach "Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory (TDDFT)" to describe electron emission induced by a broad range of laser pulses from weak to strong and from femtoseconds to attoseconds. The first part of the thesis contributes to the study of ionization dynamics of C60 irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses. Three ionization mechanisms, single-photon ionization, multi-photon ionization, and strong-field ionization, are extensively explored via photoelectron spectra (PES) and photoelectron angular distribution (PAD). Our analysis shows that for single-photon ionization, the PES basically reveal the occupied single-particle states which can be associated with the orbital depletion, and the PAD can be generalized into the anisotropy parameter which sensitively depends on the electronic states instead of the photon frequency. For multi-photon ionization, the PES are mostly generated by few uppermost orbitals, and the PAD reveal larger anisotropy with the increase of photon order. For strong-field ionization, the PES are featured by an extended plateau at high energies due to electron recollisions, and the delicate pattern on the plateau is analyzed by using a three-step model. The PAD of the high-energy electrons shows a strong alignment along the laser polarization, which is promising to generate a highly collimated electron beam. Moreover, we also discuss temperature effects from ionic motion on the PES and PAD. The second part of the work focuses on the ionization dynamics of simple atoms and molecules subject to extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses in the presence of an infrared (IR) field. Using similar laser parameters as experiments, we find that for He atom it leads to subcycle ionization on the attosecond time scale depending on the delay time between IR and XUV pulses, while for Ar atom this is absent. To better understand it, we make a systematic study on the effect of key laser parameters in the IR regime. Our results reveal that IR laser intensity and XUV frequency are decisive parameters. We further study resonance effects on electron emission in Na2 molecule, and we find that ionization pattern can be related to either IR laser frequency or the eigenfrequency of the system. We then extend it to the mid-IR (MIR) regime, where more complex ionization patterns are observed. Finally, we develop a schematic model accounting for electron emission in two-color laser field, and an analytical solution of ionization probability is also obtained, which well explains the main characteristics of the ionization pattern

Texto completoA slender body theory method developed for a body moving parallel to a wall in shallow water is extended to include angular orientation of the body to the wall. The method satisfies only the zero normal velocity condition on the external boundaries but does not take into account the effect of induced flows on the body itself. A spheroid and a Series 60, block .80 hull were the bodies studied. The side force and yaw moment on each body were determined numerically for varying angular orientation with respect to either a single wall or canal bank. For both cases results for a range of depths and wall separation distances are presented. It is found that the method gives good qualitative side force predictions for a body moving parallel to a wall, but is unable to correctly predict the yaw moment or the side force due to angular orientation. This result dictates the need for a more complex mathematical model to properly represent the flow than the simple model and quasiâ steady method used here.

Texto completoSoot particles resulting from incomplete combustion may contain a more or less important part of organic compounds (OC / TC), depending on the combustion conditions. Moreover, once these nanoparticles are emitted into the atmosphere, volatile organic compounds can adsorb, forming a coating around these fractal aggregates. The impact of the initial composition or the atmospheric aging on the morphological and radiative properties of these particles is not well known. This has an impact on the radiative climate models but also on the interpretation of the signais delivered by the different optical diagnostics that can be used for aerosol metrology. In particular, this work aims to evaluate the relevance of the use of optical diagnostics to characterize soot particles in atmospheric conditions. In order to study the impact of organic compounds initially present in the particle or adsorbed in post-combustion on their radiative properties, we have studied soot produced by a diffusion flame (miniCAST) for different global richnesses and added an organic acid coating. In order to produce an oleic acid layer on reference particles, a coating device has been implemented and qualified. Particles thus generated, coated or not, were characterized in mass (TEOM measurements), in size (SMPS measurements) and morphologically (effective density). The coating thickness as well as the morphological restructuring caused by the addition of an organic coating was thus quantified. The radiative properties were measured by spectrally resolved light extinction and scattering (angular and spectrally resolved). A special effort was made to allow experimental measurements to validate pre-existing numerical results. Moreover, these different measurement techniques (optical and non-optical) have led to the generalization of the Rayleigh Debye Gans for Fractal Aggregates (RDG-FA) theory to particles of the polydispersed fractal aggregate type coated with an organic layer (RDG-CFA). This allows to understand phenomenologically the impact of a coating on the radiative properties and to permit an easier implementation in climate simulation codes or for the interpretation of optical measurements in the atmosphere. Finally, special attention was paid to the laser induced incandescence technique (LII), to study the applicability of this technique to organic particles or having interacted with atmospheric compounds during their aging processes
