Resumen
Purpose: This study sought to identify the importance of supervision in Kuwaiti high schools from the viewpoints of heads of departments and school teachers, as well as identifying the gap between ideal and prevalent supervisory styles in Kuwaiti high schools and determining the effects of supervision on teachers’ professional performance. Methodology: The researcher took a qualitative approach, using structured interviews with a study sample represented by six heads of departments and six teachers from two high schools in Kuwait. Findings: It was found that supervision as a tool for continuous improvement in the school system positively affected the school climate. There was a gap between actual and ideal supervisory styles in the schools studied. Supervision had a positive effect on the professional performance of teachers; supervisors’ notes and observations helped teachers in identifying their shortcomings and modifying their behavior accordingly. Challenges to the effective implementation of supervision in high schools included unsuitable supervisory practices, loss of connection between the teacher and the supervisor, teacher resistance to support, and lack of meaningful feedback. Recommendations: It is necessary to employ advanced supervisory styles in order to cope with the changes in the surrounding environment. Further study will help to determine the effect of supervision on the relationship between teachers and students.

Resumen
The quality of classroom education is essential to the construction and development of departments and colleges, and a mirror of the teaching level and quality of teachers. Project-based learning (PBL) tries to create problem scenarios for learners, and encourage them to think deeper and communicate more. Inspired by PBL, this paper analyzes the existing evaluation index systems (EISs) for classroom music education in colleges, and summarizes the application of PBL in music teaching. Besides, a novel EIS is designed and constructed for classroom music education. The results show that: PBL stresses the changes of learners through the learning, and enables teachers to combine pre-, in-, and post-class methods to comprehensively evaluate the music literacy of students; PBL exerts a positive effect on students’ learning. The results lay a theoretical basis for reforming the EIS of classroom music education.

Resumen
Occupational therapy departments of tertiary care hospitals can provide staff with opportunities to gain diverse clinical experience if they rotate through the various services such as surgery, medicine, geriatrics, plastic surgery and orthopedics. The system of rotation offers both advantages and disadvantages for the staff and the institution. The Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, a large university teaching hospital, had traditionally offered staff the opportunity to rotate. Changes in staffing and their needs however, resulted in rotation becoming an important issue within the department. This article presents the pros and the cons of rotation and non-rotation systems as identified by therapists and administrators across Canada. Staff rotation was found to have an effect on job satisfaction and a therapist's career orientation. Given these findings, administrators may want to reconsider the role of the generalist and specialist in their facilities.

Resumen
The present paper describes a machine translation (MT) course taught to undergraduate students in the Department of English Language and Literature at Dhofar University in Oman. The course is one of the major requirements for BA in Translation. Fifteen EFL translation students who were in their third year of study were enrolled in the course. The author presents both the theoretical and practical parts of the course. In the theoretical part, the topics covered in the course are outlined. As for the practical part, it focuses on the translation students’ post-editing of online MT output. This is beneficial to the students as free online MT systems can potentially be used as a means for improving student translators’ training and EFL learning. This is achieved through subjecting MT output to analysis or post-editing by the students so that they can focus on the differences between the source and target languages. With this goal in mind, assignments were given to the students to post-edit the Arabic and English MT output of three free online MT systems (Systran, Babylon and Google Translate), discuss the linguistic problems that they spot for each system and choose the one that has the fewest number of errors. The results show that the students, with varying degrees of success, have managed to identify some linguistic errors with the MT output for each MT system and thus produced a better human translation. The paper concludes that there is a need to incorporate MT courses in translation departments in the Arab world, as integrating technology into translation curricula will have great effect on student translators’ training for their future career as professional translators.

Resumen
Quality achievements, teacher inputs and outputs require a universal level if our country have to compete with the developed nations. Firstly, this paper examines problems while implementing those according to the present conditions in the schools of Punjab and secondly how those problems affect educationists as employs and educationists as common man. Teacher can fulfil the desires of society if he himself is mentally free from hardships in social responsibilities and free from the threat of insecure future. Education is only way to achieve desired goals in life and to make people aware of their prospect and potentials. Due to disparities presented in the rural and urban conditions of schools of Punjab there are some issues presented which affects the education system but are ignored ever. Often ignored factors, policies and structures either by political will or by bureaucracy have many adverse effects on the thousands of educationists and their families throughout life. This paper thus depicts categories of Para teacher schemes including contractual and departmental, Unequal wages but equal desired output by department, same policies for rural and urban staff ignoring regional disparities, prioritization of subjects since Kothari commission(1964-1966) without considering demand of today’s 21st century globalised world, poor level of teacher trainings , misinterpretations of compulsory education, Annual confidential reports (ACR’s) without feedback to employs, non-teaching works due to lack of support staff in schools which suffers teacher student contact timings and finally partial transfer policies in which some remained in urban areas forever and others remained in faraway places forever until and unless blessed by political will and ignoring goals of justice, liberty and equality and in last some remedies also suggested for the revision consideration. School education forms the foundation of an education system and this can be achieved only by providing the free environment.

Resumen
Big Data refers to large volumes of information. This information varies from pictures, videos, texts, audios and other heterogeneous data. In recent years, the amount of such big data has exceeded the capacity of online or cloud storage systems. The amount of data collected yearly has doubled in the past years and the concern for the volume of this data has reached its Exabyte yearly range. This paper focuses on the major issues and opportunities as well as big data storage with the aid of academic tools and researches conducted earlier by scholars for big data analysis. Modern learning environment (MLE) has to be understood in order to know how it supports learning in areas of big data such as university education systems. The utilization of online resources and web pages with laptops and mobile phones need to be understood as an attempt to integrate the modern learning environment and improve teaching in international bossiness. Big data can be fine-tuned and used to create new online learning programmers. Data collected by government departments, universities and institutions could be used as a new innovative learning system such as (MLE) which has a passive and active character i.e. it can be accessed anywhere at any time. This would also help in minimizing extended classroom activities because students would have controlled access to online knowledge from their homes

Resumen

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak in the Indonesians nowadays, the public education department established the policy of the online education system to all education levels. Most educators employ an online flipped learning method to support the policy. Research aimed to measure the effect of online based-flipped classroom learning between using Microsoft Team and WhatsApp and student engagement on reading comprehension skills. The research approach was a quasi-experimental model with a 2 x 3 factorial pre-test-post-test non-equivalent control group design. The sample of this investigation was early period undergraduates of the management economics study program. Data analysis employed a two-way ANOVA test. The result confirmed that the online flipped learning scheme using Microsoft Team was better than WhatsApp in improving student engagement and reading comprehension skills. We advise English lecturers to apply better online media services, pay attention to the completeness of the learning features and train their competence in implementing distance learning to use compatible synchronous flipped classroom teaching based on internet technologies.

Resumen
Abstract The current study evaluated a yoga teacher training program to understand the effect of bringing yoga psychology (as an integrated eight-limbed system) to adults in custody (AIC), who were trained to become yoga teachers who will in turn teach other AICs. The study used quantitative and qualitative measures to assess the yoga teacher training program's impact on individuals, their relationships, and the overall prison environment. The study included assessments and interviews with 12 AICs and nine yoga teacher volunteers, as well as key informant interviews with two correctional officers and five administrators who work within or directly with the Department of Corrections on the implementation of the program. Quantitative results revealed significant enhancements and sustainability in all key outcome variables (self-compassion, mindfulness, perceived stress, understanding of yoga philosophy, and teaching skills) from pretest to program completion and from completion to 3-month follow-up. Additionally, AIC yoga teachers became more similar on all outcome measures to the volunteer teachers from pretest to program completion and from completion to follow-up. Qualitative methods (used for 31 key informant and focus group interviews) revealed themes that illuminated positive effects on the prison community regarding participants' personal experiences, attitudes and values, behaviors, relationships, yoga philosophy in prison, culture, and future directions. Implications and recommendations are provided to support sustaining the current program and to help with the creation of new programs to infuse yoga philosophy into corrections departments.

Resumen
The lecturer performance appraisal system is the work of lecturers within the scope of their responsibilities which refers to a formal and structured system used as an instrument to measure, assess, and influence work-related traits, control lecturer behavior, including absenteeism rates and work results. Lecturer professionalism must, of course, be related and built through mastery of fundamental competencies in carrying out and completing their duties and work as lecturers, such as professional competence, social competence, and personal competence. The low performance of lecturers is suspect of having reasons such as lack of attention and concern from leaders, for example, less effective leadership styles, less communicative work relationships, lack of harmony, lack of welfare, lack of motivation, lack of a comfortable work environment, and lack of satisfaction felt by the lecturers. Based on these reasons, further research is needed on the influence of leadership style and work environment on lecturer performance in carrying out the teaching and learning process at private universities in Semarang. This research is a quantitative study with a sample of 127 permanent lecturers in the management department of private universities in Semarang. The analytical technique used in this study is path analysis with the results. Among others, leadership style, information technology support, and work environment significantly affect lecturer performance. Furthermore, the work environment can mediate the relationship between leadership style and information technology support on lecturer performance.

Resumen
The main purpose of educational work is to provide high-quality training of medical professional able to make adequate decisions in both standard and atypical situations in their clinical practice. The theoretical foundation of students’ clinical thinking is being fostering through the course of pathophysiology, and interdisciplinary approach plays an essential role in teaching this course. The purpose of this work is to justify the necessity for interdisciplinary approach through delivering the material on typical pathological processes on the example of pain in order to improve the quality of teaching pathophysiology. Pain is a leading symptom for the most diseases. At the same time, pain can significantly affect the course of somatic pathology. Therefore, the doctors must have basic knowledge of pathophysiology of pain and be able to apply treatment methods to consistent first-line therapy. Over the first two years at medical universities, students master general biological conceptions about pain as a protective body mechanism. These conceptions are basis for studying pain as a pathological process and necessary for the formation of ideas about cause-effect relationship underlying clinical manifestations of pain and are essential step in the formation of clinical thinking. The knowledge gained will help students at clinical departments in their senior years to gain knowledge about medical diagnostic process. The tasks of educators is to summarize the general biological knowledge with which students come to the department and then to form a general medical approach to understanding the causes, occurrence, and mechanisms of the pain development and pain classification. But considering the pathophysiology of pain as a separate general theme described in the section of pathology of the nervous system at the end of the course, its individual manifestations are mentioned within the framework of typical pathological conditions over the course, therefore, a certain methodological dissonance arises. In scope of studying pathophysiology of pain little information is about the feedback between pain disorders and existing somatic pathology that is important both from theoretical and practical perspectives. An interdisciplinary approach in delivering typical pathological processes on the example of pain manifestations is one of the most effective methodological tools providing the better quality of teaching pathophysiology.

Resumen
AbstractIt is well-known that health-care systems all over the world try to improve efficiency and effectiveness due to high pressure to pursue rational performance. Many of the health-care reforms in different countries are conducted with the objectives to rationalise costs, to make health services more available, and to increase, or at least not to reduce, the quality of health services. Adequate efficient metrics used in assessing health-care services are critical for the quality of decision-making. The subject of this research is efficiency measurement in the institutes of public health in Croatia oriented to preventive activities, i.e. monitoring, analysis, and evaluation of the health of the population. Diversity of the programmes and temporal variability are the characteristics of public health services, and it is therefore harder to measure the effects in the long run. This research aims to analyse and propose a new approach to the measurement system using two methods: the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Balanced Score Card (BSC), combined into the DEABSC integrative model, which can be an efficient method for the decision-making process. The starting point of this research is the analysis of the measurement system in public-health services in Croatia. The results confirm a weak and inadequate efficiency measurement system and very low effectiveness measurement. To enhance the efficiency measurement, we have developed the conceptual integrative DEABSC model which has been tested at the Teaching Institute of Public Health – the Department of Health Ecology. Using DEA for 2017, we have identified relatively efficient units that helped establish future goals set in the BSC strategic map. The combination of DEA and BSC allows identifying options for improving the effectiveness of public-health service programmes. The study confirms that it is possible to determine the relative efficiency of different DMUs within the Department of Health Ecology and use best practice for each perspective in the BSC Cause & Effect conceptual model. This paper also provides recommendations for an easier establishment of performance measurement in order to achieve the mission of public health institutions, but also indicates some limitations in the application of the methods.

Resumen
Fractions remain a difficult concept for students at the elementary level. On that ground, prospective teachers need to develop the conceptual knowledge to have a deep understanding of the concept and how the concepts are related to each other. Furthermore, they must be able to explain the concepts through media in the form of concrete objects or images to help students grasp the whole concept of fractions. This research investigates the effect of web-based blended learning on the development of Conceptual Knowledge of prospective teachers. Web-based blended learning is a combination of online learning and face to face classroom group discussion. Prospective teachers use Edmodo as the learning management system that contains various learning resources such as videos, documents, and students’ assignments in the form of Google Forms. This study design is a non-experimental post-test. The data obtained by using open tests and analyzed descriptively. Participants are prospective teachers who enrolled in the Teaching Arithmetic course in the 7th semester of the 2018/2019 academic year at the Department of Primary School Teacher Training, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Indonesia. This study found web-based blending learning is an effective learning system to develop prospective mathematics elementary teachers’ conceptual abilities of fractions. It is recommended that this learning system be included in the prospective teachers’ Education module.

Resumen
Adverse drug reactions are the recognized hazards of drug therapy and they can occur with any class of drugs. Any substance that is capable of producing a therapeutic effect can also produce unwanted or adverse effects. Adverse Drug Reactions result in increased healthcare cost due to the need of some interventions and increased hospital stay. The study was undertaken to monitor the adverse drug reactions to medicines commonly prescribed at obstetrics and gynaecology unit in a tertiary care hospital, to establish ten most commonly prescribed medicines in this unit that gave maximum adverse drug reactions and to determine the list of commonly affected organ systems and assess their causality. In this Retrospective, non-interventional study a total of 63 adverse drug reaction reports were collected from 249 patients. The most common medicine that caused maximum ADRs was Oxytocin 10 (15.87%). Other frequently used drugs were Amikacin, Methylergometrine, Mifepristone+Misoprostol,Levonorgestrel+Ethinylestradiol, Cefotaxim+sulbactam, Cefixime+Ofloxacin, Mifepristone alone,Clomifene citrate, Tramadol. The most commonly affected organ system was cardio-vascular system 12 (19.04%).The assessment by Naranjo’s scale showed that out of 63 ADRs, 41 (65.07%) ADRs were probably related to drugs, 21 (33.33%) ADRs were possibly related to drugs and 1 (1.58%) ADR was doubtful. WHO causality assessment scale revealed that out of 63 ADRs, 51(80.95%) ADRs were probable or likely, 12(19.04%) ADRs were possible. It was observed that safe medicines were prescribed in obstetrics and gynaecology department as per FDA category A with no banned drugs .However, there is a need to sensitize the doctors to prescribe rationally and emphasize this aspect in under and post graduate medical teaching as well. The health system needs to promote spontaneous reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions from all health care professionals and the public at large in a well structured programme to build synergies for monitoring ADR in the country. Also proper documentation and periodic reporting to regional pharmacovigilance centres should be encouraged to arrive at meaningful conclusion on safety issue of medicines and thereby reduce considerably social and economic consequences of ADRs.

Resumen
Purpose This study aims to assess the adequacy of unified theory of acceptance and use of technology-3 (UTAUT-3) model in understanding academician’s adoption to e-Learning, with intent of getting more academicians to accept e-Learning in the Sri Lankan higher education context. Limited validity of the model in an educational context led to this study. The emergence of internet-based technology has changed the way people live, work and study. Technological platforms such as e-Learning have advanced educational systems by enhancing learner experience while benefiting teachers and educators in many ways. Design/methodology/approach The study used a deductive approach and quantitative methodology, in which a theoretical model was tested using hypotheses to assess causality between study variables. The simple random sampling was used to collect data using a self-administered questionnaire that was sent via Google Forms to targeted respondents. The final sample consisted of 441 academicians who responded to factors of e-Learning adoption on a seven-point Likert scale. Structured equation modelling was used for data analysis. Findings It was revealed that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, habit and hedonic motivation were significant influences of academician’s adoption to e-Learning. However, social influence and personal innovativeness in IT were not significant predictors of e-Learning. Research limitations/implications Due to the scope of the study, the factors that determine e-Learning adoption were limited to UTAUT-3 variables. Additionally, the concept was tested from only an academician’s perspective using quantitative methodology. Practical implications The findings are useful to higher education institute (HEI) administration, instructors and teaching assistants, policymakers to design and implement their online strategy as well as to make appropriate decisions in getting e-Learning accepted among a higher number of local HEI academicians. It is recommended for the decision-makers in the HEIs to consider the effect of the above findings in setting plans for higher e-Learning adoption. For instance, staff training catering to specific departmental needs, continuous awareness building, periodic reviewal of e-Learning system, e-Learning champions, introduction of policies and guidelines to encourage trial usage would be useful in this aspect. Social implications Successful use of e-Learning would help HEIs to overcome certain issues that exist in a traditional classroom. e-Learning facilitates education delivery beyond time and space while supporting enhanced performance monitoring and skill development which ultimately improve quality of output and institutional performance. Originality/value The study examined the adequacy of UTAUT-3 in understanding the adoptability to e-Learning. Second, it recognised a set of factors that affect the academic staff acceptance of e-Learning in higher education environments. A useful framework is provided to the HEI’s administration to successfully implement e-Learning systems. This study contributes to the growing body of information system literature by examining the validity of UTAUT-3 framework in the use and acceptance of educational technology in a developing country.

A Review of: Kolstad, A. (2017). Students’ learning outcomes from cross-collaborative supervision in information seeking processes during work placements. Nordic Journal of Information Literacy in Higher Education, 9(1), 2-20. https://doi.org/10.15845/noril.v9i1.231 Abstract Objective – To analyze the effect of collaborative interdisciplinary teaching and supervision using physical and digital tools on students’ information literacy (IL) and evidence based practice (EBP) abilities. Design – Qualitative and quantitative text analysis. Setting – Learning Centre at Oslo University College and student work placements in Oslo, Norway. Subjects – Approximately 400 students enrolled in the undergraduate nursing degree programme. Methods – The author is a librarian and project manager of the Langerud project, an initiative wherein nursing students were jointly trained and supervised by nurse educators, nurse supervisors, and librarians in preparation for and during work placements over an eight-week period. In this role, the librarian author collected 36 student group assignments, 285 blog/wiki comments from students, nurse educators, nurse supervisors, and librarians, and 102 individual student logs written during six work placements between Spring 2010 and Spring 2012, which were posted in a learning management system (LMS), as well as in an evaluation form from Spring 2010. The unstructured text is analyzed according to how the students fulfilled the learning outcome of integrating steps zero to four of the seven-step EBP model: (1) Cultivate a spirit of inquiry; (2) Ask clinical questions in the PICO format; (3) Search for the best evidence; (4) Critically appraise the evidence; and (5) Integrate the evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences and values. The logs are also analyzed quantitatively to measure if and how many students combined the three aspects of EBP - defined as being the practitioner’s individual expertise, best research evidence, and client values and expectations. Lastly, the author seeks to evaluate the role of the LMS as a mediating tool. Main Results – The author found that the majority (83%) of students successfully met the learning outcome, particularly for steps 1, 2, and 5. For step three, the author observed that some students did not apply PICO in the information-seeking process and were thus not sufficiently thorough in their searching. For step four, the author found that most students failed to demonstrate critical appraisal of the evidence and that many struggled to find up-to-date research findings. The author noted that the results for both steps three and four could be attributed to the students finding international databases and English-language research articles too challenging, given the language barrier. The author’s analysis of the logs reveals that two-thirds of the students combined the 3 aspects of EBP and that 39% described 1 or 2 aspects, of which most described user-based knowledge and experience-based knowledge. One department produced twice as many log entries as the other seven departments; in this department, students were able to choose what aspect of EBP to focus on and the librarian had a co-teaching role in that learning group. Overall, 60% of all students described research-based knowledge, which increased over time from 46% in Spring 2011, to 60% in Autumn 2011, and 83% in Spring 2012. On the evaluation form from Spring 2010, most students rated the supervision by and satisfaction with the nurse educator, nurse supervisor, and librarian as good, very good, or excellent, and many commented that the LMS was a useful learning platform. Conclusion – The author concludes that the project had a positive impact on students’ preparedness for work placements and that the early educational intervention improved IL and EBP competencies. Furthermore, the working relationship between the Nursing Department and Library was strengthened. After the Langerud project ended, the curriculum was revised to add more searching for research-based information in written assignments. Additionally, a lecture on EBP was developed based on real-life experiences from the project and delivered collaboratively by the project’s manager, a nurse educator, and a librarian.

Resumen
Background: Our medical education system has various limitations. In the initial few years of medical education, the focus is more on teaching the theoretical aspect of various subjects and not to apply the knowledge gained to practice. It is important to stimulate a student’s analytic thinking and provide them with an opportunity to see theory in practice. In case-based learning (CBL) a case acts as a stimulant of learning. The aim of the study was to introduce CBL in Pharmacology to teach second year MBBS students and see its effect on their performance. The study also aimed to get student and faculty (Department of Pharmacology) feedback on this teaching model. Methods: A total 180 students of second prof. MBBS and faculty of Department of Pharmacology were included in the study. A total of two topics were taken for CBL sessions. The theory lecture of the first topic was conducted. The students were divided into smaller groups of 15 each and a pretest was taken. This was followed by CBL session and after that post-test was administered. The second topic was covered on similar format. At the end of the two sessions the student and faculty feedback were taken on a five-point Likert scale. Results: A total 127 students participated in the study. 90% of the students agreed or strongly agreed that CBL had been useful in understanding the topics and it will be useful for foundation of their clinical years. All faculty members agreed that CBL does improve student teacher interaction but they found CBL to be time consuming. Conclusions: CBL was well accepted by the students and they want that other topics should be taken up by this method. The faculty also believes that it is worth giving a try but at the same time CBL is time consuming and it may be possible to conduct it for only a few topics in a session.

Resumen
AbstractObjectivesThis study aimed to ascertain the association between self-reported pain intensity and vital signs in both emergency department (ED) patients and a subgroup of patients with diagnosed conditions known to produce significant pain.MethodsWe performed a retrospective analysis of real-time, archived data from an electronic medical record system at an urban teaching hospital and regional community hospital. We included consecutive ED patients ≥16 years old who had a self-reported pain intensity ≥1 as measured during triage, from March 2005 to December 2012. The primary outcome was vital signs for self-reported pain intensity levels (mild, moderate, severe) on an 11-point verbal numerical scale. Changes in pain intensity levels were also compared to variations in vital signs. Both analyses were repeated on a subgroup of patients with diagnosed conditions recognized to produce significant pain: fracture, dislocation, or renal colic.ResultsWe included 153,567 patients (mean age of 48.4±19.3 years; 55.5% women) triaged with pain (median intensity of 7/10±3). Of these, 8.9% of patients had diagnosed conditions recognized to produce significant pain. From the total sample, the difference between mild and severe pain categories was 2.7 beats/minutes (95% CI: 2.4−3.0) for heart rate and 0.13 mm Hg (95% CI: -0.26−0.52) for systolic blood pressure. These differences generated small effect sizes and were not clinically significant. Results were similar for patients who experienced changes in pain categories and for those conditions recognized to produce significant pain.ConclusionHealth care professionals cannot use vital signs to estimate or substantiate self-reported pain intensity levels or changes over time.

Resumen
This article will focus on the mentoring process, which is interconnected with such HR functions as adaptation, motivation and training. And recently, many employers from a variety of alternatives have made a choice in its favor. Aim. The work examines the main functions of mentoring, its practical benefits and areas of application, and the main attention will be focused on the issue associated with the formation of pairs of mentors and students in order to achieve the greatest effect from their interaction. Materials and methods. In the process of achieving the research goal at the initial stage, it was planned to solve the problem of assigning a student to a mentor by forming the most “effective” pairs of mentors and students. These tasks were solved using the Hungarian method. But all the solutions obtained testified to the optimality of any solution to this problem. From this, it was concluded that there was no significance in combining mentors and students, based on a comprehensive assessment of their competencies, skills, etc. As a consequence of the result obtained and analysis of various literary sources, it was concluded that the most effective criterion for composing pairs “mentor – teaching” is compatibility (psychological and socio-psychological), the presence of which will favorably affect the effectiveness of the interaction between the mentor and the student. Consequently, the human resource management department needs, in addition to assessing the competencies, skills and other parameters of the effectiveness of mentors and students, to assess their psychotypes and/or apply various methods to determine the compatibility of the participants in the mentoring process. Results. The main result of the work is a mechanism for securing a student for a mentor and a refutation of the fact that the “effectiveness” of mentors and students, i.e. a point assessment of their competencies, skills and qualities can be a determining factor in the formation of pairs of mentors and students. Conclusion. So, when forming pairs of mentors and students, i.e. distribution of students by mentors, it is proposed to focus on their psychological and socio-psychological compatibility.

Resumen
AbstractBackground:Despite the patient numbers and scope of ENT surgery, it is under-represented in most undergraduate medical curricula.Method:An online questionnaire was e-mailed, at National Health Service trust level, to 3544 newly qualified doctors from 30 UK medical schools. Undergraduate ENT exposure, confidence and educational value were measured on a Likert scale. Results:We received 444 eligible responses. The mean undergraduate ENT exposure was 3.4 days of pre-clinical teaching plus 5.0 days of ENT departmental experience. However, 15.8 per cent of respondents reported no formal departmental ENT experience, and 65.8 per cent would have liked further undergraduate experience. Teaching modalities with a lower perceived educational value were generally offered more frequently than those with a higher perceived educational value. Graduates felt significantly less confident with ENT history-taking, examination and management, compared with their cardiology clinical competencies (p < 0.001).Conclusion:These results highlight the lack of UK ENT undergraduate education, and the significant effect this has on junior doctors’ clinical confidence. In addition, commonly used teaching methods may not be optimally effective.

Resumen
Accrediting organizations now mandate the development of learning outcomes (LO) and the methods to assess those learning outcomes for national and international institutions of higher learning. Because of this, academic institutions pay greater attention to the development and assessment of these LO. There are two types of learning outcomes: course outcomes and program outcomes. This paper presents an empirical study that examines both kinds of LO in a case study of one course (title: Database Fundamental and Applications, number: 0303331) within the Management Information System (MIS) department at the University of Sharjah (UoS), United Arab Emirates and presents the following with regard to this case study: 1) the development process of the LO for this specific course; 2) the data collection process, and 3) the data collected related to the assessment instruments for both the course and program LO (course learning instructions, course exams, course projects, students’ records, students’ grades, course reports, course evaluation, instructor evaluation, exit surveys, employer surveys, and job placement indicators); 4) the methods of assessment of the LO based on the analysis of the collected data using a variety of analysis technique and tools; and 5) the usage of the analysis results in successive semesters in order to improve the MIS courses and program. The findings of this empirical study suggest several areas for improvement. One improvement is the addition of more practice-based learning components. Additionally, the study shows that the enhancement of the course material, the improvement of teaching strategies, and the usage of technology and its infusion into the learning process are areas that can improve LO. Overall, the method of LO development and assessment described in this empirical examination has shown a positive effect on the courses and program in the MIS department, and it is believed that the results can be generalized for use by others in developing and assessing LO in other learning institutions.

Resumen
Background: Multifactor affect the pathogenesis of thrombosis in solid malignancy; however, a significant role is attributed to the cancer cells ability to interact with and activate the host hemostatic system. [1] Hemostasis is highly correlated to tumor growth, angiogenesis and metastasis, modulation of these pathways reflects interesting and promising treatment options in the future. [1] Most patients with cancer frequently suffer from chronic compensated DIC and have abnormal laboratory coagulation tests without clinical manifestations of thrombosis, which is a subclinical hypercoagulable state that can be detected by varying degrees of activation of blood clotting. The results of laboratory tests in these patients reflect continuous fibrin formation and lysis during the course of malignancy. [1] Aim of study: To study the effect of solid malignant tumors on blood coagulation via measurements of plasma fibrinogen and D-dimer. Subjects and methods: Thirty patients (9 males and 21 females) attending the oncology consultatory out-patient clinic at Baghdad Teaching Hospital/ Medical City were randomly selected and included in this study. These patients were newly diagnosed as having malignant solid tumors depending on histopathological reports from private and governmental sectors. All the laboratory tests were done at the hematology and biochemistry departments of Teaching Laboratories/ Medical City. Results: Plasma fibrinogen level was significantly higher in patients group rather than control group (3.863 ±0.706) Vs (2.497±0.457 g/L} respectively, (P-value 0.001).The mean value of factor VIII activity was {181% ±58.4)and (99.3% ±11.1)for patient and control groups respectively, the P-Value was significant ( > 0.001 ).D-dimer was negative for all members of control group, for patients group ( 66.7 %) of them showed positive D-dimer and (33.3)were negative for D-dimer ,P-value was significant ( >0.001 ). Conclusions: There was increase in plasma fibrinogen level and positive D-dimer in cancer patients compared to the control group reflecting subclinical thrombophilia and higher risk of VTE in patients with solid tumors due to activation of prothrombotic and fibrinolytic pathways by malignant cells which is vital for the use of primary prophylaxis by anticoagulants.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to gain a clear understanding of the impact of uncommon use of knowledge (adaptation and augmentation) on the performance of information systems (IS) departments, and to explore the effects of human-resources management (HRM) practices on uncommon use of knowledge.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire-based survey was used to measure the constructs of the research model. A survey package was delivered to project managers or team leads and 133 responses were returned.FindingsThe empirical results indicate that knowledge adaptation has a significant effect on departmental performance, whereas knowledge augmentation is more important to innovation than to routine departmental performance. The results also show that, while knowledge adaptation can be enhanced by communication and an uncertainty-avoidance culture, knowledge augmentation is an outcome of shared decision-making, the use of teams, and innovation-based policies.Research limitations/implicationsGiven the positive impact of uncommon use of knowledge on IS department performance, future research should explore other factors besides HRM practices to boost it.Practical implicationsThe results can serve as guidance for managers looking to select HRM practices to promote uncommon use of knowledge.Originality/valueThis study introduces knowledge adaptation and knowledge augmentation as the component processes of uncommon use of knowledge to the IS discipline, and empirically validates the antecedents and consequences of uncommon use of knowledge using survey data.

Resumen
The transformation of the model of university organization, with the passage of the traditional system of chairs to departmental, began in Spain in the mid-sixties. The educational policy of the regime, taking as reference foreign models such as the German or Anglo- Saxon, introduces via regulations, which are not real and operative, the bases of the new model through the Law of July 17, 1965 on the structure of university faculties and their teaching staff. This article analyses and discusses that initial process of gestation and insertion of the department as a new structure of the hierarchical-administrative organization of the institution, taking the University of Salamanca as an excellent illustration of this case study. For this, the historical method and unpublished printed sources are used – minutes of the Council of Rectors, of Faculty Meetings, correspondence, etc. – as well as legislative sources, which provide us with the basic normative frame of reference. All this allows us to review the main legal milestones and some of the most relevant events that take place prior and subsequent approval of the departmental system, issues that will reveal motivations, points of view and tensions generated among the body of professors before the loss of chairs turned into authentic bastions.
