Azarnouche, Samra. "L'éducation religieuse et profane en Iran sassanide : avec une édition commentée du texte moyen-perse Husraw ī Kawādān ud Rēdag-ē "Khosrow fils de Kawād et un page"". Paris, EPHE, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012EPHE4008.
Texto completoSources dealing with Sasanian Iran (3rd-7th c. A. D. ) enable us to study two distinct systems of education : the religious and the profane. The first is centred on the zoroastrian institution of the hērbed, the « teacher-priest », who is in charge of transmitting the knowledge of sacred texts (the Avesta as well as its commentaries). During the transition period of the reign of Khosrow I, the nature and methods of this education had to fit the requirements imposed by the conservatism of the priestly elite. The profane education is centred on the court sphere. Modeled on the instruction of the princes, the instruction of the aristocracy takes place at the royal court and is described by paradigmatic figures which tend to depict an ideal picture of the Sasanian nobility. These two themes are assembled in a most representative text, the narrative Husraw ī Kawādān ud Rēdag-ē « Khosrow, son of Kawād, and a Page ». This text is not only a manifesto of aristocratic education but also the richest available source on courtly customs of this period (such as food, games, music, etc. ). By collating sources of the Sasanian era (in Middle Persian, Arabic, Persian and Syriac) and identifying the terminology and visible structures of a two-fold normalized educational system, the present study aims to contribute to the history of education in pre-islamic Iran
Lenfant, Dominique y Ctésias. "Ctésias de Cnide : édition, traduction et commentaire historique des témoignages et fragments". Paris 4, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA040321.
Texto completoThe testimonia about Ctesias of Cnidus and his work are here collected and analyzed. The different aspects of his life are examined and the last episode known of it is re-interpreted. We recall the story of the lectures of his work, of its lost and of the modern attempts to reconstitute and understand it. We specify which principles were followed in the composition of the corpus and the edition of the text. We set out and analyze the fragments about Assyria, Persia and India. The history of Assyria includes elements of Assyrian legend and history, but it is full of anachronisms, which is modelled on achaemenid things. It perhaps reflects a Persian vision, but it offers a literary picture, which is in fact Greek and due to Ctesias. The history of Persia gives evidence for the plurality of versions that ran in Persia and Greece according to the ideological needs. Less reliable than Herodotus, it is used for the period after Xerxes. It is fond of relating the court conflicts as well as all what can shock the reader. The picture of India is inspired by things that were seen or accounts that were gathered in Persia. It even includes some traces of Indian legends, but it belongs above all to the mythical vision that the Greeks had of the confines of the world. Ctesias still shows his wish to surprising, but he also reveals a questioning about the limits of humanity. Assyria, Persia and India join together in the image of a fabulous orient, which is distinguished by excess, cruelty and aberration and this image enlightens us above all on the thought of the Greeks themselves

Texto completoThis dissertation presents a critical edition and a French translation of an anonymous commentary on ?afi¯ al-Din al-Urmawi's Kitab al-adwar. Based on this commentary, I establish an inventory and revise the study of Arabic texts written in the tradition of al-Urmawi. For this purpose, I examine both principal works of ?afi¯ al-Din al-Urmawi face to face and observe the contributions of his readers and reviewers. The dissertation thus presents a detailed study of various themes~: the place of music as a medieval science; sound and its production; the divisions of the monochord; the theory and design of intervals, genres, cycles and modes; the theory of rythm; and the theory of melodic movement

Texto completoThe literary translator in Iran is the key link in the chain of translation that contributes to the creation and development of new forms and themes in national literature. For the most part, it is the translator who begins the process of producing a translation by selecting the source text. However, this choice is not insignificant: it is affected by the whole trajectory of the translator's social life, his habitus according to Bourdieu and his horizon according to Berman; it is subject to the position occupied by the translator, and depends on the level of his symbolic, social, and economic capital which the previous expression of his standpoints, in this case his translations, have accumulated. Once the source text has been selected, the choice of the translation strategy follows the same pattern. It is the habitus and the position of the translator, which can orient him towards a particular technique or approach. Furthermore, the aim of the translator is important: does he/she want to earn money or recognition from his/her peers? Does he/she choose to subvert the established rules or to respect them in his/her translation? By analyzing the case of (re)translations into Persian of Albert Camus' Caligula, using a multidisciplinary approach at the crossroads of sociology and translation studies, the present study attempts to provide an overview of the field of literary translation in Iran and to identify the role of the agents who play an active role in it such as the translator, the publisher, the controlling authorities and agencies such as cultural ministries and academies, as well as the booksellers whose influence on the reception of (re)translations has often been ignored in translation studies of the Iranian context

Texto completoThis work is a critical edition and a French translation of a part extracted from the Mir’at al-zamân fi tawârikh al-a‘yan (Mirror of the time in the histories of notabilities) of Sibt Ibn al-Gawzi (d. 654/1257). The author was a famous preacher of Iraqi origin and lived the major part of his life in Syria during the Crusades' times. His work is a universal history going back to the Creation down to the author’s death. The edited part deals with the years 412 to 434 / 1021-1043, corresponding in the history of Iraq to the reigns of Musharrif al-Dawla and Galal al-Dawla, two emirs of the Buyid dynasty who rule the country between 945 and 1055. It also contains information about other parts of the Arabic and Islamic world of that time: Ghazna, Egypt, Syria, Iran, and Upper-Mesopotamia. The edition and the French translation are preceded by an up to date biography of the author and a wide study about the Mir’at al-zamân’s manuscripts. The original version of Sibt Ibn al-Gawzi’s work indeed didn’t come down to us and the manuscripts only usually reproduce different abridged versions whose authors are still mostly unknown to us. Our edition provides for this part of the work the two extent abridged versions, one short which has already been edited but in an incomplete way and had to be revised, and one long which is here edited for the first time
Langlois, Anne-Isabelle. "Les archives de la princesse Iltani découvertes à Tell al-Rimah (XVIIIe siècle av J-C)". Paris, EPHE, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EPHE4028.
Texto completoThis work is based on a woman''s archive, which is worthy of interest and quite unparalleled in the cuneiform documentation available so far. This archive, consisting of a hundred and fifty economic texts, belonged to a princess, Iltani, Sâmû-Addu's daughter and sister of Aqur-Addu, king of Karanâ. She married Haqba-Hammû, a diviner, and lived in the old palace of Hadnû-rabi; king of Qattarâ. Iltani archive, dated to some years after the destruction of the Mari palace, is the major epigraphic source for the period and the region; it gives some - admittedly local - information about a period for which the documentation was lacking. The aim of this PhD was thus not only to study Iltani's archive tablets anew but also to bring out important details about the lifestyle of a woman living in an 18th century BC ancient capital, with the help of the corpuses of neighbouring sites such as Šubat-Enlil/Šehnâ, which was recently published, and Mari. A new edition of Iltani's archive was made possible thanks to my photographies of Iltani's tablets. They are the base of this thesis which highlights the characteristic features of this documentation. This thesis gives us a better knowledge of Iltani and her entourage, clarifies some aspects of their life and of the history of the kingdom they were living in. Another interest of this study is the description of the daily life of a high rank woman from Upper Mesopotamia during the Old Babylonian period, which helps to improve our understanding of the place of women in that society
