Texto completoThe purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the study of the role of State intervention in the Mediterranean countries, and this in the promotion of the responsible approach. This doctoral work provides a general review of the study of the role of environmental factors in the context of sustainable qualified development. It discusses, among other things, changes in the perception of CSR policy in the Mediterranean region. In our study on CSR, we focus our research on both voluntary and obligatory approaches, following institutional constraints, and subject them to comparison. In doing so, we focus in particular on how the CSR concept has been strongly related to the notion of environmental sustainability. The first part of this work presents an exhaustive and critical review of the literature on responsible approaches. In the second part, which is essentially factual, we frame the empirical and institutional foundations of a green growth model. Estimation and validation are presented at the last chapter level. The results highlight the relationship between CSR and governance as regards sustainable growth and sustainable environmental-friendly growth, at the macroeconomic level. The results obtained allow us to confirm that firstly, CSR plays a positive role in order to improve the quality of the environment. Secondly, various approaches overlap and tie together to propose environmental-performance scenarios throughout the Mediterranean.Thirdly, it appears that the restrictive intervention of the state weakens CRE efficiency, added to this the impact on -CSR- of the disparity at the institutional level and between countries of different development level. Finally, according to the results obtained, we believe that the interaction between the will and the duty to carry out responsible actions could in turn constitute/ lead to a perfection in terms of ecological sustainability for Mediterranean-bordering countries

Texto completoNowadays where oil prices become considerably expensive and CO2 emissions increase rapidly, grid operation is becoming even more multidimensional given the environmental policies that are enforced. Given the set of goals stemming from the Kyoto agreement and initiatives like the 20/20/20 European agreement, tight schedules and boundaries are dictated, for all the participating countries in order to consistently reduce their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions while integrating more renewable energy and substituting older and pollutant heavy production technologies with newer and more eco-friendly ones. Thus, the whole restructuring of the energy systems are focused in two fronts in order to achieve the mentioned goals, 'cleaner' energy integration and energy efficiency. In order to achieve cleaner energy, attention has been drawn to the highly promising RES, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units and alternative fuels like natural gas units and Fuel Cells (FC). The installation of more and more units of Dispersed Generation-DG (PV, WT, FC, Micro_CHP, etc.) close to consumers leads to a new era for the Energy Systems. Microgrids could come into play to aid the network through CO2 emission reduction while increasing their efficiency through local generation. Microgrids are defined as Low Voltage (LV), or in some cases Medium Voltage (MV), networks with DG sources, together with storage devices and controllable loads (e.g. water heaters, air conditioning) with a total installed capacity in the range of few kWs to couple of MWs. The unique feature of Microgrids is that, although they operate mostly interconnected to the upper level voltage distribution network, they can be automatically transferred to islanded mode in case of faults in the upstream network. This doctoral thesis aims to develop methodologies and analysis techniques for the quantification of the DG’s advantages in Microgrids scheme, giving emphasis in environmental issues and constraints (e.g. various carbon tax rates, CO2, SO2, NOx constraints, emission factors of production units, e.t.c.). Moreover, suitable calculation software for minimizing the operational cost in the Microgrid (in which variations in the pricing policies are applied) will also be developed. So, by evaluating comparable scenarios, the environmental and pricing policies that contain greater viability and realization potentiality will be presented. In addition, given the above parameters, an economic-environmental hourly dispatch problem is formulated in order to optimally produce the hourly generation schedules of the Microgrid's DG. Matlab software will be used to perform the proposed simulations (Lagrange Method – fmincon function)

Texto completoThe rapid expansion of the Pulp & Paper industry in Indonesia has generated large overcapacities because fiber supplies were based mainly on the conversion of tropical forests. Using financial theory about financial expropriation and debt entrenchment in East Asia, we show that the ultimate owners of the groups have been able to capture most of the rents owing to a divergence between their control rights and their ownership rights. Their profits were done in the short term, but their costs were postponed owing to a capital structure based on debts. Politics and public gouvernance have also played an important role in favor of the interests of the ultimate owners, and all the apperances seem to suggest that the expansion followed a model of political economy. Recent efforts to develop large-scale fast-growing plantations have poor impacts on the sustainable developement of the rural areas, because of environmental irreversibilities and a loss of flexibility for the rural poor. However, economic irreversibilities lower the probability that the current trend be voluntarily modified

Texto completoThe management of plastic waste is a major problem that has yet to be resolved with a view to a more sustainable development of human activities. Among the possible solutions, recycling is an interesting way to recycle non-renewable materials. After decades of centralized recycling, there is now a growing interest in approaches based on distributed recycling. Taking advantage of the democratization of open-source 3D printing technologies (OS), we propose to revalorize locally the plastics that can be used by these technologies. This distributed recycling can be considered as a kind of "intelligent network", composed of small coordinated recycling units, which provide recycled plastic filaments to the 3D printing community. The technical feasibility of this plastic recycling approach has been proven in the literature. However, its feasibility from a supply chain and logistics perspective has yet to be demonstrated. In order to address this issue, this research thesis seeks to provide answers to the following research question: Under what conditions is it possible to deploy a sustainable network of local and distributed plastics recycling using open-source 3D printing technologies? Taking into account the above, this research work aims to propose a framework for the analysis and evaluation, from a sustainability perspective, of the distributed plastic recycling approach for 3D printing. The proposed evaluation framework combines optimization and system dynamics in the evaluation of the sustainability of the recycling approach. The application of the evaluation framework to a specific case study of a university seeking to implement a distributed recycling demonstrator to recover 3D printing waste from middle and high schools in northeastern France illustrated the feasibility from a sustainability perspective

Texto completoOver the past decade, higher education and research etablishments (HERE) around the world have been confronted with a number of challenges relating to the articulation of three dimensions, namely the development of higher education. Innovation and Sustainable Development. The questions that arise are related to the adoption of new innovative technologies in higher education etablishments, the evaluation of the quality of RSE strategies in a multi-criteria and multi-stakeholder perspective, the development of programs taking into account the challenges of sustainable development, etc.Taking the example of the development strategy of the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and the creation of the University of Paris Saclay, we will examine how significant initiatives to meet this triple challenge have been developed. A historical reminder will be made to trace the evolution of the strategy of the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (2004-2015) and the University of Paris Saclay (2015-2020) in terms of program development. training and partnerships for sustainable development. In particular, we will use the ePLANETe.blue knowledge mediation portal, which provides (a) an innovative tool for documenting educational programs and materials (TALIESIN DOORWAY), (b) a tool for assessing the quality HERE in a deliberative perspective and (c) an innovative and original approach in the development of pedagogical approaches. A reflective approach is proposed to evaluate the contribution of ePLANETe.blue to the knowledge economy

Texto completoCave tourism is not a recent phenomenon since visits of caves are attested as of XVIème siècle. With the end of the XIXème century, the first heavy installations are carried out in cavities revealed by the first speleological explorations. In more than one century, the visit of arranged caves fell under the durability of a tourist product which, showing a great invnetiveness, knew to attract tourists and to accomodate flows of visitors increasingly more. Today, with 4 million visitors per annum, France is located at the 3rd rankbehind the United States and China in term of cave tourism. However a disaffection of the costumers appeared since the years 1990 and comes to disturb an activity which undergoes its first great crisis there. In order to apprehend this economic situation, cave tourism is initially positioned within the framework geohistoric which is undissociable of its evolution. Then it is studied in various dimensions of its durability : functional, environmental and economic durability. The purpose of the study is to show the place of cave tourism in the tourist offer ; the problems of installation and frequentation, perceived through three regional examples (Lot, Dordogne, Dauphiné) make it possible to characterize the complex operation of atypical case of tourist model

Texto completoThe main objective of this study was to assess the ecological and economical sustainability of selective logging in the Amazonian context. Two sites were selected: 1) the site of Paracou in French Guiana where forest dynamics has been monitored since 1984; 2) a forest managed in the state of Pará, offering data on the impact of logging, its costs and revenues. At first, this work consisted of improving the Selva model elaborating 11 specific models to mortality and recruitment. The processes of standing dead trees and falling trees were identified by the models. The former mainly used biological variables characteristic of the tree whereas the latter preferentially included descriptive variables of the surrounding stand. Specific variables of stand structure and stand floristic composition allowed to model the recruitment of 30 species which were mainly pioneer/light demanding species. The inclusion of these models allowed to integrate 92 life strategies in the Selva model. The virtual forest so created shows a stand structure and specific diversity close to a primary forest. In the framework of the Brazilian forest legislation advocating 25-35 year - rotation cycles, logging simulation by Selva showed that it would be possible to harvest 4 trees/ha/cycle while maintaining the basal area 20% lower than the original one before logging. Selective logging generated benefits varying between 147 and 239 US$$/ha/year whereas deforestation ones were slightly higher (295 US$$/ha/year). A framework of financial compensation to change from a production system with a negative carbon balance (deforestation) to a selective logging would represent a Carbon Ton cost higher than US$$ 10

Texto completoAfter the economic crisis in 2008, construction activity in France grew rapidly. The increase in demand for building materials was accompanied by an increase in the quantities of construction waste and emitted CO2. In 2018, CO2 emissions from human activities reached a world historic level of 37.1 billion tons. This encourages the development of building materials that meet the changing needs of today's and tomorrow's society. Geopolymers, prepared by alkaline activation, present an opportunity to produce new, more efficient and environment-friendly materials in the construction sector. On the other hand, industrialization and robotization are emerging in the construction sector, with many benefits such as increased productivity, reduced waste, cost and arduous work, as well as improved quality and safety. This doctoral thesis is being conducted to address these scientific challenges and issues. These are divided into three research directions: the development of new geopolymer brick formulations, the integration of geopolymer materials into the industrialization and robotization of construction processes, and finally the environmental and economic assessment of the new automated manufacturing system

Texto completoThis thesis aims to develop a performance assessment methodology of power generation systems based on biomass gasification in a rural area case in developing countries. The general methodological framework of this thesis is described in the approaches as follow: (i) defining performance assessment criteria, (ii) selecting methods or models for assessing the criteria, and (iii) choosing the method of analyzing the reliability of the assessment. Based on this methodological framework, a methodology for the assessment of electricity generation by biomass gasification systems in West Africa is developed. Fourteen assessment criteria are defined by taking in account technical, economic, environmental and social aspects. Models are developed for the calculation of each criterion considered. The models are then applied to carry out a performance assessment of the electricity generation by biomass gasification project in Burkina Faso. Twelve (12) system configurations are studied to satisfy the same load profiles. Simulation results allowed identifying from the point of view of the operator and the consumers the configurations which give better valorization of biomass available with an affordable electricity cost and which offer to operator a relative flexibility to adapt to changes in electricity demand
