Texto completoThis thesis empirically investigates policy and managerial interventions in the digital economy and analyses their effectiveness and potential side effects. The first chapter uncovers an unintended policy effect of a public support scheme for firms in economically lagging regions in Germany. It exploits variation in the eligibility and the size of potential investment subsidies of firms in order to analyse the relationship with the firms' propensity to adopt cloud services. The empirical results demonstrate that the higher the potential subsidy for investments, the lower the incentive for firms to adopt cloud services. This unintended policy effect is highly relevant for policy makers, as the adoption of cloud services has been linked to various benefits on the firm as well as on the aggregate economy level. The second chapter analyses the pioneering online hate speech regulation on the social media platform X. It exploits the regulation, the German Network Enforcement Act, in a quasi-experimental approach to measure the causal impact of the law on the prevalence of hateful content in a target group of the German-speaking segment of X. The results imply a significant and robust decrease in the intensity and volume of hate speech in tweets tackling sensitive migration and religion related topics. Importantly, tweets tackling other topics as well as the tweeting style of users are not affected by the regulation, which is in line with its aim. This chapter highlights that legislation for combating harmful online content can significantly reduce the prevalence of hate speech and contributes to understanding the perspective implications of the European Digital Services Act.The third chapter investigates mechanisms of the Creator Economy, which capitalizes on a multi-sided business model, connecting content creators, users, and (sometimes) advertisers. Matching the needs of these different stakeholders is a complex challenge, as evidenced by the impact of the YouTube “Adpocalypse” in 2017, when major advertisers fled YouTube due to concerns about their ads appearing alongside objectionable content. This chapter exploits YouTube's subsequent content moderation efforts following the Adpocalypse to measure the cross-platform responses of content creators and content consumers on Patreon. Focusing on content creators that multi-home on YouTube and Patreon, the theoretical model and empirical evidence of this chapter confirm that these content creators respond strategically and shift their efforts toward Patreon. As a result, consumers also increase their use of Patreon through memberships, comments, and likes. However, we also find that YouTube's content moderation and the shift by content creators and consumers that follows, results in an increase in toxicity on Patreon. These findings indicate that governance rules of a single platform cannot be looked at in isolation. Instead, platform managers and policy makers need to consider potential cross-platform reactions of all stakeholders. The three chapters of this thesis demonstrate that interventions in the digital economy can be effective in shaping online discussions, but digital particularities such as rapidly changing technologies and substitution effects need to be carefully considered

Texto completoThe Insurance’s ability to shape and distribute risks and responsibilities relies on the exploitation of multiple sources of data. The large amount of information produced in the digital era can be mobilized in order to reconfigure the relationship between the insurers and the insureds. Behavioral insurance, which builds on the tracking and valuation of the insured’s daily behavioral data, constitutes a striking and politically sensitive case, even though it is a poorly documented phenomenon. Building on a qualitative investigation and the deployment of an economic sociology of information, this research sheds light on the origins and the concrete functioning of behavioral insurance. The research shows the context of emergence of these products and the ways these are designed and implemented. If the wield of power by insurance is as old as the institution itself, it appears that the forms of this wielding are unprecedented. On the basis of behavioral economics theories and the shaping of an informational pipelines built on the uses of tracking devices, the promoters of behavioral insurance attempt to digitally conduct insured’s daily conducts, and to act as conductors of the alignment of individual, entrepreneurial and societal interests. Behavioral insurance is an uncompleted attempt of shaping an algorithmic governmentality

Texto completoThe movie theatre manager articulates the cinematographic public place and the public place. He proposes a definition and an objectification of the cinema within the public place, depending how he « builds » an aesthetic experiment frame. Thus, the movie theatre manager is on a « crossroad ’: he has to ensure the (material and symbolical) frame required for an aesthetic experiment, depending on institutional practices and according to the spectators « demands». The business challenges of the movie theatre manager concern as well its competitive location, as its location within the cinematographic public place as well as within the public place. This thesis aims at reporting it, in an interdisciplinary way. It also commits a comment on the definitions of the cinema belonging to the public place as well as the function that this space grants it.The new digital devices can drive to the radicalisation of the mass media aspect of the movie (by multiplying the ways of reception). But they also offer new aesthetic configurations. Thus, the cinema has to be (re) defined according to these new possibilities (Part 1).It is all the film institution which is concerned by the problems due to the new technologies emergence and which tends to reduce the cinematographic experiential value to the mass media of the film aspect. Now the market exploits this logic more than the institutions do and so appears as the only guarantor of the quality (Part 2).However, the movie theatre manager is not only a diffuser; his work also is to proceeds a mediation. So, it is a matter of considering the sociability problematics committed by the theatre space and the conditions of creation of micro- agora, micro public place by the movie theatre (Part 3).It is only in a global seizure of both aspects of the cinema (mass media and micro-agora) that the movie theatre manager has a clear and an important function, that it must be revalued within the film public place (conclusion)
Petit, Richard. "L'économie écologique, une économie politique alternative ?" Lille 1, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997LIL12007.
Texto completoThis essay is devoted to a new school of thought in economics, ecological economics, whose authors (georgescu-roegen, daly, costanza,) are mainly american (but also french like rene passet) and it examines this new stream of thought to decide whether it can challenge the standard school and become an alternative political economy. For this purpose this essay tries to show the relations supposed to exist between the framework used by every thought in economics to represent man and nature and the analytical conclusions draw from it. The essay wants to show that ecological economics substitutes to the usual framework of standard economics a vision of man and nature inspired by scientific ecology and by radically different epistemological presuppositions. Therefore this school of thought is an implicit citicism of modernity, particularly of the break between man and nature. From these methodological principles propositions of economic policy are drawn, summed up under the title "suatainable development". This very concept leads to ethical ideas and ecological economics ask the normatif question in economics. The essay concludes that on one hand, ecological economics is rather radical and can be seen as an alternative political economy, but on another hand, it does not consider the political question and this constitutes the main weakness of this new school of thought. Its future depends on its capability to deal with this question

Texto completoMany historical studies dealt with economy of antic, medieval, modern and contemporary periods. They make an economic history, not an history of economy. Obviously, this notion knew various uses whose principal one refers to the idea administration of an area whose size did not cease increasing, of the house to planet while passing by the city and states national. However, an important step in this history is often neglected : her theological usage to qualify the salvating mission of Jesus Christ and the Church, known as the expression « economy of salvation ». The aim of this study is to retrace the institutional genealogy of this notion which, in the antic period, switches from « oίκoς » to « oίκoυμένη », then, in the Christian period, from Creation to « globalisation ». In addition to the analysis differentiated from the ancient economic order and of a Christian economic nature in their holding and bordering, it develops the link between the concept of economy and the idea of an economic justice, in order to highlight its fundamentaly normative essence. In the final analysis, it is a question of understanding that the current meaning of the economy, this science apparently purely phenomenologic, has in spite of her relative youth a very ancient history which partly explains her dominant position in the contemporary hierarchy of disciplines, such as the expression « political economy » means it

Texto completoThe purpose of this work is to provide an economic analysis of the French administrative judiciary, using the public choice theory. Unlike other legal systems, the french one features several types of judges, among them the juge administratif ; in charge of judging administrative conflicts. The closer integration of bureaucratic models and principal agent models does not provide any satisfactory explanation for this situation. The study of informational asymmetries between judges and political decision makers has to be completed with the analysis of the independence of the judiciary. The existing groups of judges compete with each other in order to get production rights from the political decision makers. The rent seeking theory allows us to explain the french duality of justice producers and the increasing activity of the juge administratif. The french legal system is no longer an exception but a particular equilibrium of a more general model describing any existing legal system. In such a context rent seeking behaviors are likely to increase social welfare. The influence of litigants on judicial decisions has to be considered as the result of the activities of particular interest groups. On the one hand, the judicial production of rules is a byproduct of the judges' activity of resolution of conflicts. Litigants are interested in the production of judicial decisions only in the context of a repeated game. On the other hand, the stability of this kind of rules is a consequence of the utility the jude administratif ; derives from reputation. The judicial production of favorable decisions to citizens, at the expense of bureaucracy, is analyzed by successively using the efficiency of law theory and the general interest and norms hierarchy concepts
