Resumen
The review article onEconomic History of Early Modern India(Routledge, London, 2013;Economic Historyfrom now on) by Shami Ghosh is both a review of the book and a series of arguments about how eighteenth-century Indian history should be interpreted. These arguments suggest a few hypotheses about the pattern of economic change in this time (1707–1818), which are presented as an alternative to what the book thinks it is possible to claim, given the current state of knowledge. In pursuing the second objective, which is to seek fresh interpretation, Ghosh recommends reconnecting Indian regions with global economic history more firmly than is in evidence in the book. Overall, the article subjects the book to a close reading, and outlines a research programme that will surely help further the discourse on the eighteenth century.

Resumen
Predicting the future has always been difficult, and it is almost impossible to predict both the direction of the future and the time of its arrival. By comparing the history of natural evolution with the history of economic development, this paper finds that both the traditional real economy in the past and the e-commerce system in the Internet era can find a matching historical period in the history of species evolution. The high degree of similarity between the two proves the close connection of the underlying logic between the two. Therefore, the author puts forward a conjecture: by comparing the natural evolution history to predict the future economic development and direction. The author further verifies this conjecture by viewing Silicon Valley as "the future that has arrived but has not yet been popularized." As the post-pandemic era unfolds, the next wave of economic change and prosperity will most likely occur in the next five to 10 years. The result of this boom is likely to be the rapid rise of the "Iron Man economy".

Resumen
The interpretation about women that has been carried out by Muslim scholars can be mapped into three groups. First, traditional interpretation. Interpretation by using certain subjects according to the interests and abilities of the interpreter, such as fiqh, linguistics, history or sufism. Second, reactive interpretation. It is the reaction or response of modern thinkers to a number of obstacles experienced by women who are considered to come from the Qur'an. The problems discussed and the methods used often come from feminist and rationalist ideas, but without a comprehensive analysis of the verses in question. Third, holistic interpretation. This interpretation uses a comprehensive method of interpretation and relates it to various social, moral, economic, political issues, including women's issues that have emerged in the modern era. This article will discuss Muslim feminist interpretations, including Amina Wadud, Fatima Mernissi and Asghar Ali Engineer.

Resumen
In economics, as in other disciplines, one often comes across the term "Whig" or its derivatives. One will find, for example, a particular account being branded as whiggish. Butterfield, who was a historian, introduced the idea of a Whig interpretation of history in 1931. Since then the term has usually been used to classify an approach which views the present as the culmination of a march of progress. This paper provides a brief background to the origin of the term and why Butterfield criticised what he called the Whig interpretation of history.

Social solidarity is a founding principle of the State and of law. The historic building of the democratic state of law raised the constitutional discipline to the core of law. At the current stage of development of society, the social law, building social solidarity implies the concrete realization of the constitutional purposes of inclusion and social justice at material and teleological perspectives of democracy, through tax and financial instruments needed, with the participation of State and society in financing activities for the achievement of those goals. One of the expressions of social solidarity at Social Law is the actual existence of Social Security, which protects workers from misfortunes. The protection of the universality of workers at the General Board of compulsory membership performs the aspiration for social solidarity. The compulsory membership entails mandatory security, and independent of the contributory duty situation, given the structure of integrated protective constitutional requirements of the worker, who did not induce fluency of social security and tax legal relations arising from the fact itself of working, except in certain situations. The interpretation under social solidarity, at the experience of hermeneutical theory and the constitutional structure of pension schemes, demonstrates the blatant impropriety with which the institute is being addressed in the doctrine, the courts and the resulting legislative activity. This paper proposes the reconstruction of the interpretation of the institute, with the presentation of its historical construction and deviations from post- constitutional experience, to enlighten the legal content as the democratic aspirations of the social pact translated in the Constitution outlines.

Resumen
The first chapter relates the size of the present-day LGBT population to the discovery of gold during the nineteenth century gold rushes. Comparing the surroundings of gold rush counties to other mining counties, we find that there are currently 15% more same-sex couples in former gold rush counties and that residents of these counties have more favorable attitudes toward homosexuality. Gold rush counties were initially isolated, mostly uninhabited and lacked strong formal institutions, which helped shaping pro-LGBT attitudes. Examining channels of persistence, we provide empirical evidence for selective migration and the lack of strong religious institutions. The second chapter examines the impact of gender focused labor legislation on women’s labor force participation and economic empowerment. We rely on historical legislative acts passed by state legislatures and exploit whether or not states passed regulatory laws regulating overall and industry specific employment and work conditions for women, night work laws and labor laws requiring provision of seats for working women. We exploit the fact that not all states enacted these laws as well as the variation in the timing of enactment of such laws. Our results show that women in comparison to men in treated states are more likely to be in the labor force post introduction of night work laws in comparison to control states. We also document the effect of industry-specific labor policies on women’s likelihood to be employed in the affected industry and in higher-wage occupations within the industry of interest. Policy implications of our findings endorse the adoption of labor laws in favor of women to advocate their empowerment through a higher involvement in the labor market and financial independence. The third chapter tests the doctrine of first effective settlement by relating early settlers’ culture to within state variation in gender norms in the United States. In 1973, the cultural geographer Wilbur Zelinsky postulated that the distinctive traits of early settlers at initial stages of institutional development may be crucial for cultural formation. I capture settlers’ culture using past female labor force participation, women’s suffrage and financial rights at their place of origin. I document the distinctive characteristics of settlers’ populations and provide suggestive evidence in support of the spatial (across locations) and vertical (over time) transmission of gender norms. My results show that women’s labor supply is higher, in both the short and long run, in U.S. counties that historically hosted a larger settler population originating from places with favorable gender attitudes. My findings shed new light on the importance of immigrants’ characteristics and their countries/states of origin for cultural formation in hosting societies.

Resumen
The thesis provides a descriptive survey of the history of interpretation of Revelation 11:1-13. Prior to 1000 AD it aims to be comprehensive, but after this date concentrates on Western interpretation. Ch. 1 - Prior to 1000 AD. Rev 11:1-13 is examined in relation to the wider complex of traditions concerning Antichrist and the return of Enoch and Elijah. The commentary tradition on Revelation is examined, including an extensive reconstruction of Tyconius. The passage is applied in two ways: 1. to two eschatological figures, usually Enoch and Elijah. 2. to the Church from the time of Christ's first advent until his return. Ch. 2 -1000-1516 Exegesis similar to that of chapter 1 is found. There is new exegesis from Joachim of Fiore, who believes that the two witnesses will be two religious orders, and Alexander Minorita, who reads the entirety of the Apocalypse as a sequential narrative of Church history, arriving at the sixth century for 11:1-13. Ch. 3 -1516-1700 Protestants interpret the beast as the papacy/Roman Church, and the two witnesses as proto-Protestants prior to the Reformation, often interpreting their 1260 day ministry as 1260 years. Catholics respond by applying the passage either to the eschatological future or the distant past. Ch. 4 -1701-2004 Protestants continue to see the 1260 days as 1260 years, although this interpretation declines markedly in the nineteenth century. Both Catholics and Protestants apply the passage to the distant past of the early Church. Historical critical exegesis introduces a new exegesis, where John is regarded as having incorrectly predicted the return of two individuals shortly after his time of writing. Applications to the entirety of the time of the time of the Church increase in popularity in the twentieth century.

This thesis is composed of three essays. The first essay is a history of economic thought study of the ways in which empirically oriented economic historians have attempted to explain the causes of modern economic growth. The contributions of theorists, classical and neoclassical, are well known. The contributions of economic historians, with a few exceptions, are much less well known. This omission is unfortunate as economic historians have, in the main, remained closer to the data that they are trying to explain than mainstream theorists. Since the pioneering work of Colin Clark, Simon Kuznets, and Phyllis Deane and W. A. Cole, empirically and theoretically informed economic historians have attempted to measure, locate, and explain the causes of modern economic growth. This essay exposits and evaluates the arguments and methods used. The results have been mixed. The literature is characterized by the failure of empirical studies grounded in neoclassical price theory to explain the mechanism by which growth occurs. This failure has resulted in a return to searching for the necessary conditions required for growth to occur. The change of focus has been accompanied by a shift to increasingly comparative studies, and to an increasing diversity of methods. The second essay presents a real-wage series for New Zealand for the period from 1840 to 1914. Adding 32 years to the existing series, the new series allows a more complete understanding of the growth of wages within New Zealand and relative to the rest of the world. The key observation on the internal economy is that after growing at more than two per cent per annum up to 1882, the growth rate of real wages slowed to less than two thirds of one per cent from 1883 to 1914. In comparative terms, I trace the wage premium of New Zealand over Britain to the early 1850s. The premium peaks during the early 1880s, at approximately 50%, before declining to approximately 35% post 1910. Wages in New Zealand were approximately 75% of Australian wages in the 1850s, and converged with Australian wages no later than 1900. The third essay investigates the causes of the decision by British migrants to move to New Zealand between 1839, when New Zealand became part of the British Empire, and 1914. Migrants faced alternative destinations, most notably the U.S.A., that could be reached more quickly and at lower cost. Approximately half of the migrants received some combination of discounted passages, loans for their passage, employment guarantees, and land grants. Beginning with the insights of Hatton and Williamson into the general characteristics of the nineteenth century mass migration, this essay considers what place various assistance schemes have in explaining the decision of migrants to choose New Zealand as a destination. The econometric analysis suggests that the migrants to New Zealand were motivated by the same concerns as migrants to other destinations. Relative wages were important, as were labour market conditions. While the model is a good fit for the aggregate flow and the assisted migrants, it is a less good fit for the unassisted migrants. These results point to the possibility of cohort differences between the assisted and unassisted migrants. More generally, the essay highlights the impact of institutional factors on the migration decision. Migration is a path-dependent process; understanding why a migration started provides considerable information about the likely course that it will take.

Brosseau-Liard, Patricia Elisabeth. "Preschool children's interpretation of others' history of accuracy". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1310.

Texto completo
Resumen
Over the past 25 years, there has been tremendous interest in the development of children’s ability to reason about others’ mental states, or “theory of mind”. Much research has explored children's understanding of situational cues that lead to knowledge, but only recently has research begun to assess children's understanding of person-specific differences in knowledge. A number of studies (Birch, Vauthier & Bloom, 2008; Jaswal & Neely, 2006; Koenig, Clément & Harris, 2004) have recently demonstrated that at least by age 3 children pay attention to others' history of accuracy and use it as a cue when deciding from whom to learn. However, the nature and scope of children's interpretations of other's prior accuracy remains unclear. Experiment 1 assessed whether 4- and 5-year-olds interpret prior accuracy as indicative of knowledge, as opposed to two other accounts that do not involve epistemic attributions. This experiment revealed that preschool children can revise their tendency to prefer to learn from a previously accurate informant over an inaccurate one when presented with evidence regarding each informant's current knowledge state. Experiment 2 investigated how broadly a person's history of accuracy influences children's subsequent inferences, and showed that 5-year-olds (but not 4-year-olds) use information about an individual's past accuracy to predict her knowledge in other related domains as well as her propensity for prosocial or antisocial behaviour. Overall, children's performance in these experiments suggests that both 4- and 5-year-olds interpret others' history of accuracy as indicative of knowledge; however, 4-year-olds make a more restricted attribution of knowledge while 5-year-olds make a more stable, trait-like attribution. These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for research on theory of mind and more broadly on children's social and cognitive development.

Resumen
Focusing on the workshop of an economic agent, a parisian tailor between 1420 and 1455, this article proposes an analysis of the payments in kind made in his shop in order to test the hypotheses of interpretation that historians usually formulate to understand the use of non-monetary payments. The source for this study of the methods of payment in use in 15th-century Paris is the tailor's shop book, which document the payments he received in grain, foodstuffs, objects and school services provided to his son and financed by his work. They shed light on the motives and circumstances that might explain the use of barter in a highly monetarised and commercialised urban economy.

The level of the command economy is primarily determined by how it is adapted to the environment and then using only spectacular food-producing economy to nasushnoy needs of the population. The close relationship between the natural and geographical conditions and economic activities shows the ethno-political determenirovannost nomadic society. Despite the huge reservoir of the study and the availability of general works on the history of the Kyrgyz period under consideration, remain controversial questions of economic structure, species composition of herds, the existence of ancillary hozyayaystva, the value and location of the household and the level of development of commodity-money relations. The use of empirical research base and the historical and cultural interpretation of material evidence allow rekonstruktrirovat structure of the economy and the Kyrgyz life.

Resumen
Globalization phenomenon caused effects that profoundly reduced the variety of reality, involving cultural, social and economic diversities, once recognizable and also identifiable through the study of architecture as a collective product of a civil community. In this context, architecture, as built and anthropic reality, suffered the shots of a revolution that has produced osmosis, hybridisation, contamination, both diatopic that diachronic, now became synchronic and syntopic phenomena. Actually, you can find / read common characters in the substrate, first typological then material, which, if critically interpreted, could indicate a possible and alternative way out of this apparent chaotic condition. In my opinion, following the consolidated basis of a theoretical and cultural heritage that has provided tools for critical reading of urban transformations, it is possible to distinguish two types of processes, usually traceable in cities. In order to rich this goal, I used the tools of the mechanical building discipline that identify: ‘elastic’ and ‘plastic’ transformations. The ‘elastic’ transformation produces ‘elastic cities’ because, at the end of the sustained stresses, the final configuration not change, instead the ‘plastic’ one produces ‘plastic cities’ when, at the end of the sustained stresses, the final configuration is not coincided with the initial one. These considerations / critical notes are the beginning of a research that, in my opinion, could offer inedited developments, both in the recognition of an unusual history of architecture, closer to his material essence, either as design and project tools, coherent with new consolidated environments.

Resumen
The aim of the article is to describe the tangible and lasting uneven regional distribution of manufacturing in Italy, as the result of a historical reinforcing process. In doing so, we cite the basic parameters typically applied by the New Economic Geography approach and try to relate some global developments in the Italian history, with the seemingly outright influence of such specific theoretical parameters. The method is merely descriptive and uses a map and some manufacturing statistics for spotlight the actual sectorial distribution of employment as an evidence of the divergent process. For underpinning the analytical interpretation, we consult the previous contribution of some Italian economists and historians setting forth the consolidation of Italian manufacturing expansion and its startling spatial concentration. The descriptive style of the article ends up highlighting the pervasive influence of historical inertia on the regional economic development and the pertinence of New Economic Geography framework for interpreting the uneven distribution of manufacturing across the space.

Resumen
Abstract Economic evaluation of exploration and production projects ensures a positive return for asset operators and stakeholders and evaluates risk in field development decisions related to both reservoir model uncertainties and fluctuations in oil and gas prices. Traditionally, such evaluation is performed manually and deterministically using single or limited number of cases (limited number of reservoir models and few values of economic parameters). Such traditional approach does not integrate seismic-to-simulation reservoir model uncertainties, the reservoir model used is often unreliable due to inconsistent property modifications during the history matching process, full span of prediction uncertainty isn't properly propagated for economic evaluation and the whole process is not fully automated. This paper presents an integrated and automated forward modelling approach where static and dynamic models are connected to integrate the impact of uncertainties at the different modelling stages (seismic interpretation through geological modelling to dynamic simulation and further to economic evaluations). The approach is demonstrated using synthetic 3D model data mimicking a real North Sea field. It starts by building an integrated modelling workflow that can capture the various reservoir model uncertainties at different stages to automatically generate multiple probable model realisations. Proxy models are constructed and used to refine the history match in successive batches. For each prediction development scenario, prediction probabilities are estimated using posterior ensemble of geologically consistent runs that matches historical observed data. The ensemble of reservoir models is automatically evaluated against different possible economic scenarios. The approach presents a seamless and innovative workflow that benefits from new-generation hardware and software, enables faster simultaneous realisations, produces consistent and more reliable reservoir models. Probabilistic economic evaluation concept is implemented to calculate the statistical probabilities of economic indicators.

Resumen
The global integration demands a theoretical understanding and characterization of anti-crisis management. On the one hand, it is associated with changes, which not only create opportunities, but also raise a number of difficulties, and on the other - with the necessity of a concept, combining different approaches. The globalization has various dimensions. It is the subject of discussion by the researchers of many scientific fields - sociology, economics, geography, politics, international relations, culture, technique and technology, history, demographics and more. The definitions of the specialist of policy and international relations are interpreted as a accelerating and improving transnational nature of the relationship between the partners and establishment an international order with help of the UN and other international organizations. The anti-crisis management is a relatively new area of scientific knowledge. In the process of globalization, changes in economic, political, social and spiritual environment, there are expanding opportunities but also pose serious constraints to its theoretical study and practical application. This paper examining with some aspects of the anti-crisis management in the process of global integration. Clarified are the main requirements for anti-crisis management as a system, as a set of mechanisms and processes, specific technologies and management styles. It discusses factors that determine the effectiveness of anti-crisis management. There is substantiating necessity of interpretation on the need for new specific features in management thinking.

Resumen
Abstract This paper showcases the tailored initiatives undertaken in a different economic climate in view of low oil price in maturing and capturing potential development opportunities for a large-sized, brownfield asset. The subject field is mature, having over 250 wells with over 20 years of production history and approaching its end of economic life. The study emphasized pursuit of a fast and cost-effective approach in identification of several potential behind-casing recompletion opportunities in addition to multiple infill drilling opportunities. From well log observation to seismic interpretation, and from material balance to simulation modeling, the approaches utilized were tailored based on the level of reservoir complexities. Lower cost, lower risk, behind pipe opportunities had previously not been a focus or thoroughly assessed since the company had focused on infill drilling opportunities. A robust execution plan, minimizing rig moves, was also prepared to synergize the ongoing and planned infill drilling campaigns in the field. An infill drilling well proposal was approved as part of the 2014 Field Development Plan (FDP) update with regulators. This plan was subsequently deferred due to drop in oil price resulting lower economics. However, with the field approaching the end of its economic producing life, a revisit of potential opportunities was conducted by a multi-disciplinary team. Results of the more recent opportunities identification and successful drilling campaigns have revived the proposal for the infill well given the synergies with rig utilization. The team went through a simplified governance process on the FDP, revisiting the simulation model and proposed to drill a horizontal infill production well instead of dual-string deviated well (originally envisioned for long string as an infill producer in the target reservoir and short string completed as a water injector in a different reservoir). Due to further well performance analysis, injection support on the other reservoir was no longer deemed necessary. The team analysis for arriving at this optimization as well as the behind-casing recompletion opportunities will be shared in this paper. This is a case study on how assimilated and innovative approaches undertaken in a different economic climate can be crucial to accelerate a brownfield re-development to extend the economic life of a mature producing field. A multi-disciplinary team applied creative thinking and cooperative efforts to a mature field to revive economic viability. Revisiting previously identified opportunities in the context of a low oil price environment and a simplified regulatory governance process, cross functional and cooperative technical and financial team work were important in facilitating timely decisions needed to move forward. A similar approach will be undertaken for future work in other fields.

The planning of commercial activities cannot limit itself to purely economic and management dimensions, but should be central to any debate on the city. This inquiry contributes to illuminate the city and commercial systems production mechanisms that can be either mutually reinforcing or mutually negating. Our interpretation of the relationship between the commercial spaces and the city is based on the study of commercial models that characterize Lisbon. This analysis of its recent commercial history - from 1970 to 2010 - has led to the definition of three macro - categories of commercial systems that illustrate three types of relationships between the city and its commercial dimension: symbiotic, commensal, and parasitic.

Resumen
Abstract Lower completion in openhole horizontal well is known to improve oil sweep, aid water control and water shut-off in carbonate reservoir. In a marginal oil field of onshore Abu Dhabi, lower completion is an important role to achieve the long-term recovery and production sustainability. The lower completion candidate selection process for marginal field is unique due to economic indicators are stringent than large field's application. In this paper, we will present an integrated approach of lower completion screening to solve both technical challenges and economic consideration in a green marginal oil field. We incorporated a multi-domain screening approach where findings from comprehensive set of data and analysis are integrated. Multi-level analysis was performed to obtain a weighting factor or indicator for lower completion need per well. The evaluation includes production history, logs, borehole image, reservoir compartmentalization analysis, well trajectory, drilling losses history, surveillance such as pressure transient analysis and production logging and other data. One of the considerations of lower completion is to remove accessibility issue. Indicator was gathered based on historical coil tubing accessibility evaluation and review of well with high dogleg trajectory. Lower completion need for water control is evaluated through multiple analysis such as water conformance analysis and evaluation of preferential communication between producer and injector. The analysis is complemented with study of oil and water influx distribution based on production logging, permeability-thickness log, borehole image interpretation, drilling losses history, and pressure transient analysis. Indicator were also collected per well for potential influx mitigation and water shut off need due to natural fractures and fault. Additionally, reservoir compartmentalization analysis was also performed to identify if horizontal wells are located at multiple compartments and can be benefiting from lower completion. Around 20 wells were included during the study. A standardized matrix scoring and ranking were generated. From the screening result, 12 wells have been selected as best candidates for lower completion deployment. Few wells were selected due to well accessibility issues and trajectory challenges and remaining wells selected due to non-conformance water breakthrough and or due to strong preferential communication with water injector. That candidate was further studied through numerical simulation and subsequently economic indicator were generated to support the decision making and implementation priority. From this study, 3 Pilot implementation of inflow control device complemented with sliding sleeve door mechanism are due for implementation in the near term. In a green field, lower completion candidate screening is a continuous process and will need to be updated when new findings or surveillance are obtained. It may also be adjusted along with evolution of field development plan. The screening practice presented in this paper may be adopted by other asset for an effective lower completion screening study.

The paper works on the redraw, construction and analysis of new maps and interpretations in some territorials windows, in various scales, for few urban centers of the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy, Argentina) as an instrument of knowledge. In this sense, this research is looking to understand the morphological processes of transformation in recent decades, in relation to the economic crisis in Argentina at the beginning of the XXI century, the declaration of the Quebrada de Humahuaca as a World Heritage Site (UNESCO, 2003) and national tourism promotion, among other events that have changed the local’s logics. For this, study the changes and continuities in the territory and the types of urban development -adding new blocks, annexation of new neighborhoods and subdivisions in the urban discontinuous or gradual densification of urban, rural and rururban, among others- knowing the recent history of the Quebrada.

Resumen
Equilibrium assumptions posit relations between different people's beliefs and behavior without describing a process that causes these relations to hold. I show that because equilibrium models do not describe a causal process whereby one endogenous variable affects another, attempts to decompose the effects of shocks into “direct” and “indirect” effects can suggest misleading predictions about how these models work. Equilibrium assumptions also imply absurd paradoxes: history can determine future behavior without affecting any intervening state variables today; individuals can learn information that no one originally possesses by observing each other’s actions. This makes equilibrium models unreliable tools to study how economic systems coordinate activity and aggregate dispersed information. I describe how to construct non-equilibrium models that avoid these paradoxes and can be interpreted causally.

Resumen
In this paper we examine the evolution of the relation between ethics and economics. Mainly after the financial crisis of 2008, many economists, scholars, and students felt the need to find answers that were not given by the dominant school of thought in economics. Some of these answers have been provided, since the birth of economics as an independent field, from ethics and moral philosophy. Nevertheless, since the mathematisation of economics and the departure from the field of political economy, which once held together economics, philosophy, history and political science, ethics and moral philosophy have lost their role in the economics’ discussions. Three are the main theories of morality: utilitarianism, rule-based ethics and virtue ethics. The neoclassical economic model has indeed chosen one of the three to justify itself, yet it has forgotten —deliberately or not— to involve the other two. Utilitarianism has been translated to a cost benefit analysis that fits the “homo economicus” and selfish portrait of humankind and while contemporary capitalism recognizes Adam Smith as its father it does not seem to recognize or remember not only the rest of the Scottish Enlightenment’s great minds, but also Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments. In conclusion, if ethics is to play a role in the formation of a postcapitalist economic theory and help it escape the hopeless quest for a Wertfreiheit, then the one-dimensional selection and interpretation of ethics and morality by economists cannot lead to justified conclusions about the decision-making process.
