Resumen
According to World Drug Report, an estimated 250 million people between the ages of 15 and 64 had used at least one substance in 2014. Approximately 29million people are suffering with substance use disorder with 207,000 deaths in 2014 [1] . In the NHS, Cannabis (3%) and opioids (0.7%) were the commonest illicit substances prevalent in India. Data from Drug Abuse Monitoring Survey observes that cannabis (11.6%), heroin (11%), opium (8.6%) and other opiates (6.3%) constitute the majority of drug use by treatment seekers other than alcohol (43.9%) in India [2] . Alcohol and non–medicinal use of psychoactive substance use has become a matter of serious concern in Sikkim. From unofficial estimates alcohol use has traditionally been prevalent among Sikkim’s population which is reflected in the national surveys. In Sikkim, prevalence of licit substance (tobacco & Alcohol) use is more common than the use of illicit substances. NFHS-3 has revealed a very high prevalence of current alcohol use at 45%% and 19% for males and females respectively in Sikkim. These figures are much higher than the national average of 32% and 2% in males and females. There is an increase in trend towards current alcohol use in particular from NFHS-2 to NFHS-3 which may be due to greater availability, accessibility, affordability, and social acceptability [3,4] . Though Sikkim was declared a smoke free state, the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS India 2010) reported the overall prevalence of current tobacco use was 42% higher than the national average of 35% [5] . However, there is a growing recognition that newer substances are becoming popular among the younger generation. Epidemiological data on illicit substances is scarce and it is hard to draw any conclusion about the recent trends in illicit substance use pattern in Sikkim.

Resumen
Sacred groves are small forest patches conserved by local people through socio-religious and historical beliefs. Gadi Central Pandam is one of the oldest sacred groves and protected more than 300 years due to its various religious, historical and archaeological significances. It is situated in the Sumin Resrve Forest of Rangpo Block of East Sikkim District. The sacred grove harbors a wide variety of plant species. This grove is facing serious threats due to various developmental activities. Therefore, it is suggested here to create awareness among the native people about the traditional values of this sacred grove and environmental benefits to the region and better sustenance of mankind by conserving the biodiversity of the region. The native people should also be encouraged to involve actively in protection and sustainable conservation managements of this grove for posterity.

Resumen
North East India is blessed with abundant tourism resources, which are unique in their own way. The flora and fauna of this region is regarded as one of the seven most bio-diverse regions of the world. Among the States in this region, Sikkim is quite a popular destination with both the domestic and international tourists. It is perhaps the only state, where one can travel 3500 meters above the sea-level in a space of 160 km. Sikkim is thus a trekker‟s paradise, offering a unique opportunity to trek to Mt. Kangchen-Dzonga. The gateway to this mountain is a small village called Yuksam in South Sikkim. Trends reveal that Yuksam is in the developmental stage of increasing growth of tourist influx, which would also have implications on the infrastructure, environment, natural resources, culture and eco-tourism of this village. So this paper aims to study how tourism in Sikkim, Yuksam in particular, can be sustained.

Resumen
Sikkim in north-eastern India is a small border state strategically located between China, Nepal, and Bhutan. Two decades of state-led investment in infrastructural development and private investment in hydropower and pharmaceutical industries has transformed Sikkim from a remote border state to a de facto Special Economic Zone (SEZ) where incursions by private capital are masked under state-led development policies. The chapter focuses on Setipool slum, east Sikkim, located near two pharmaceutical factories, to demonstrate how ambiguous land rights and the establishment of pharmaceutical factories have led to spatially contained land booms which replicate nexuses of illegality, claim-making, and exclusions that are characteristic of corporate land grabs. The paper illustrates (i) the liminal origins of development zones, (ii) the networks and, sometimes, unforeseen socio-spatial impacts within and outside development zones, and (iii) the different forms of intimate exclusions that challenge prior assumptions around local responses to corporate incursions.

Resumen
The tribal people of India consider North-East India to be a hotspot. It contains eight states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim, and it borders international boundaries with Bhutan, Tibet, China, Burma and Bangladesh. The Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, which is home to a broad spectrum of unusual flora, fauna and microorganisms, is located in the Northeast Region. The region has the evergreen forest of the Brahmaputra River valley, wide leaf forest, dense bamboo and pine forest and the world's wettest location (Cherrapunji and Mawsynram), all of which help to maintain the region's unique biodiversity. North East region is the inhabitant of more than 145 significant tribal communities with the most dominating primitive societies, including the Abor, Mishing, Rabha, Khasi, Kuki, Naga, Meitei, Apatani, etc. Most of these communities are culturally and linguistically diverse. The NER's tribal population is literate compared to other parts of the country, and it's worth noting that the literacy rates in Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Manipur are all higher than the national average. Despite their high literacy rate, India's North-Eastern states continue to have poor transportation, power and medical services. The healthcare system is in bad shape, with only a few hospitals and nursing homes. As a result, the people residing in this area rely exclusively on a traditional system of medicines made by traditional healers from plants, animals and mineral resources. It was stated that medicinal herbs are prepared using traditional methods, such as maceration, decoction, and infusion, either alone or in combination with other plants. The key species of medicinal plants often employed by the traditional healers of the region are Acorus calamus, Aegle marmelos, Asparagus racemosus, Averrhoa carambola, Bryophyllum calycinum, Costus speciosus, Euphorbia neriifolia, Justicia adhatoda, Melia azadarachta, Plumeria acutifolia, Sida cordifolia, Sida rhombifolia and Swertia chirata. This extensive work will aid the researcher in locating previously unknown medicinal plants in order to build a new therapeutic method for isolating new chemical entities that are safe, pharmacologically active, and cost-effective.

Resumen
In today's globalized world, women are recognizing in the field of entrepreneurship. This study is on five central government finance schemes—Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), Pradhan Mantri Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS), North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP), and Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI)—applicable in the state of Sikkim. The aim of the chapter is to analyze the year wise growth of women beneficiaries. The data has been collected from government websites, journals, and through ‘Right to Information Act 2005'. The study is descriptive in nature. Microsoft excel has been used for data visualization. The results of study showed a significant gender gap in the implementation of schemes, which need to be addressed through awareness and networking at ground level. The deeper penetration of financial schemes will result in more entrepreneurship ventures run and managed by females.

Resumen
Abstract While apathy or, at best, subdued activity prevailed in botanical circles in western India, the Himalayas beckoned the adventurous and the curious, among them surveyors and scientists who observed in a casual note or expansive report the indigenous plant and animal life of this complex mountain range which separates India from Central Asia, extending from Afghanistan for 1700 miles to Assam in the East, and continues into China. A diversity of soils and climates, especially the summer monsoons, support what the plant collector, Frank Kingdon Ward succinctly described as an ‘immense reservoir of hardy plants’. A fertile jungle strip, ten to twenty miles wide-the terai-which skirts its eastern ranges is home to slender evergreens such as the sal (Shorea robusta) and tall bamboos. The abundant sal yields to conifers and oaks in a gradual ascent of four or five vertical miles through a progression of rain forest, temperate vegetation, conifers, and rhododendrons to the alpine zone above the tree-line at about 10 000 feet. Everywhere plants have adapted to their environment, a delicate ecological balance which man’s intervention through cultivation, grazing and logging is swiftly destroying with consequent erosion and lowland flooding. The phytogeographical variations range between the arid zones of the Hindu Kush and the warmer, wetter regions of the east, with Kashmir, Nepal, and Sikkim offering bumper harvests for botanist and plant collector.
