Resumen
This article describes that fire researchers apply old and new tests to assure that materials meet safety requirements. Baltimore-based Hughes Associates Inc., a fire research firm, uses standard tests and computer modeling, and, in some cases, will develop tests to ensure that new building products satisfy the safety requirements of existing building codes. Hughes Associates also facilitates contact between its client and the appropriate code-making organizations, whether local, state, federal in the case of governmental agencies, or internationally through its offices in Singapore and in Milan, Italy. The data derived from the small-scale tests are also used in flame spread computer modeling testing. These tests use a series of proprietary computer modeling programs to predict the behavior of the product’s flames—for example, how high the flames would reach, and how quickly they would spread. The development of amusement park attractions is driving fire testing to prove that these attractions meet the stringent public assembly provision in fire codes.

Resumen
In his article “From Firm to Networked Systems,” Thomas Hughes introduces concepts, such as “infrastructure” and “networking,” that are critical to today's managerial system, but, by focusing on electric utilities, the story he tells does not go beyond the arrival of the new science of electronics in the early twentieth century. Professor Hughes, therefore, does not consider the critical role of high-technology industries–that is, those that commercialized and brought to market new products based on new scientific learning—in exploring the evolution of managerial systems.

Resumen
We develop a model to analyze optimal product-costing and pricing decisions in a dynamic information environment under long-term-capacity commitment. The arrival of new information about demand and cost parameters each period makes the problem complex. The optimal prices and capacity choices in our model cannot be decoupled as in Banker and Hughes' (1994) single-period model. The optimal prices are based on product costs that are adjusted each period to reflect changes in expected variable costs as well as utilization of fixed activity resources. The charge for each fixed resource is monotonically increasing in the expected demand for that resource in each state given the optimal capacity choice. The average optimal prices across periods and states are similar to Banker and Hughes' (1994) benchmark prices. Finally, we investigate a two-period version of the model to explore the optimality of carrying idle capacity. The optimal product-cost charge for fixed capacity is strictly less in the first period than in the second period when the firm expects demand growth.

Resumen
ABSTRACT We explore how risk aversion affects optimal capacity and pricing decisions within the economic setting of Banker and Hughes (1994). A risk-averse firm invests in fixed capacity and sets a product price, but can also purchase spot capacity at higher unit cost. Initial capacity and price are set by maximizing the firm's mean-variance certainty equivalent. We find that, contrary to common intuition, optimal capacity or list prices can increase under greater risk aversion depending on exogenous fundamentals. We show how the firm's capacity and price choices affect the economic trade-off between the mean and the risk of the firm's uncertain payoffs. We also show that the cost of capital is affected not only by the firm's covariance with other assets, but also by its payoff mean. The objective of minimizing the cost of capital is, therefore, fundamentally inconsistent with maximizing project value.

Resumen
ABSTRACT This interview presents Jason Miller’s research on the friendship between Langston Hughes and Nina Simone, who was known as the High Priestess of Soul. As a Hughes scholar, Miller combines his knowledge of Hughes with painstaking biographical research on Simone. In this way, he demonstrates how Hughes is connected to soul. Miller traces their friendship to Simone’s active participation in a local chapter of the NAACP when she was a high school student. Then he explains how the two artists later met, in a real sense, after Simone became a professional artist. Most important, Miller discusses the nature of their friendship, which led to their momentous collaboration on Hughes’s poem “The Backlash Blues” that Simone transformed into her own song, as evident in Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s film Summer of Soul.

Resumen
Searches for the role of spin in gravitation dated before the firm establishment of the electron spin in 1925. Since mass and spin, or helicity in the case of zero mass, are the Casimir invariants of the Poincaré group and mass participates in universal gravitation, these searches are natural steps to pursue. In this update, we report on the progress on this topic in the last five years after our last review. We begin with how is Lorentz/Poincaré group in local physics arisen from spacetime structure as seen by photon and matter through experiments/observations. The cosmic verification of the Galileo Equivalence Principle for photons/electromagnetic wave packets (Universality of Propagation in spacetime independent of photon energy and polarization, i.e. nonbirefringence) constrains the spacetime constitutive tensor to high precision to a core metric form with an axion degree and a dilaton degree of freedom. Hughes-Drever-type experiments then constrain this core metric to agree with the matter metric. Thus comes the metric with axion and dilation. In local physics this metric gives the Lorentz/Poincaré covariance. Constraints on axion and dilaton from polarized/unpolarized laboratory/astrophysical/cosmic experiments/observations are presented. In the end, we review the theoretical progress on the issue of gyrogravitational ratio for fundamental particles and the experimental progress on the measurements of possible long range/intermediate range spin-spin, spin-monopole and spin-cosmos interactions.

Resumen
Two years-plus into a global pandemic, we all have experienced the fragility and uncertainty that dogs the global supply chain for lifestyle goods and services. Remember last year when you couldn’t find a multipack of toilet paper to save your life? Or maybe you’re currently in the market for a vehicle, so you visit your local dealership—and find that the lot that’s normally awash with shiny, new vehicles … has three. And though they carry a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of about $25,000, they are being offered for well in excess of $30,000. These supply-and-demand anomalies can be directly attributed to disruptions in the supply chain—whether it’s manufacturing woes such as parts shortages or logistical snarls with goods stacked up at ports for a lack of dockworkers or truck drivers. These same types of supply chain challenges that affect us on a personal level can also do a number on industries. For oil and gas, the situation is unique. The symbiotic relationship between oil companies and oilfield service (OFS) companies has run hot and cold for decades. Oil company supply chains are directly tied to those service companies that provide the tools and equipment required for oil and gas extraction and production. When things go sideways, service companies have historically retained much of the contractual risk. However, that doesn’t change the fact that when service companies are impacted by shortages, so are their clients. This past year, as oil prices rebounded from pandemic lows and global demand started to creep back up, OFS companies were faced with overcoming gaps in the supply chain at their expense—some of which continue today. “Supply chain and inflationary pressures also drove higher costs and delivery issues primarily across our OFS and DS [digital services] product companies,” Lorenzo Simonelli, chief executive at Baker Hughes, told investors in January. “Our teams have continued to work to offset some of these pressures, but we expect to continue to see some level of tension and disruption in these areas potentially through the first half of the year.” Those impacts place pressure on profit margins for OFS companies, and oil companies will fight to keep their costs from increasing, which could create a tenuous scenario for 2022. Many of the supply chain disruptions affecting Baker Hughes stem from logistics, some shortages more broadly, and disruptions in shipments. The company is offsetting the impact by employing new shipping routes and increasing lead times on specific items. “Right now, pretty much about 90% of our suppliers are giving us 1-year lead times, and we have all of our 2022 on order there. To give you some perspective, if I go back 7 months, that 90% was about 20 to 30%,” said Simonelli. “That’s really what’s going on in the industry. We are planning for it. We’re working through it and operating in this new normal.” Baker Hughes is far from the only oilfield service firm being affected by the “new normal.” Many are experiencing increasing delays in the delivery of tubulars, meters, and other basic oilfield equipment.

Resumen
The purpose of this paper is to examine how God and Moses are depicted in three contemporary American film adaptions of The Exodus story. The films I have analyzed are: The Ten Commandments (2006), The Bible: Exodus (2013) and Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014). For this, I have used a content analysis and Bruce Lincoln’s theory of religious maximalism and minimalism. This study has shown that the first two films are characterized by an almighty God who helps Moses from the very first step, while the third gives a more scientific explanation of e.g. the ten pledges and the crossing of the Red Sea. While God in The Bible: Exodus (2014) is also portrayed as a god who acts out of love and compassion for his people, this is not the case in the other two films which instead portray him in a much more negative light. My conclusion is therefore that these three films do not only differ in how God and Moses are depicted but that they provide us with different messages about God and religion in general.

The present research work was integrated as part of the EU-funded project named HUGS (HUmins as Green and Sustainable precursors for eco-friendly building blocks and materials), involving 5 main partners (Institut national de l'environnement industriel et des risques - France, Avantium - the Netherlands, Institut de Chimie de Nice - France, Universidad De Cordoba- Spain and Leibniz - Institut Fur Katalyse Ev An Der Universitat Rostock- Germany). The project is essentially supported through five European Industrial Doctorate fellowships put in place when the HUGS-MSCA-ITN-2015 program was launched in 2016. The primary objective of the HUGS project was to explore several valorization pathways of so-called “humins” in order to add value and create better business cases. Humins (and similarly lignins) are the side products that may become low-cost feedstock resulting from a number of future biorefineries and sugar conversion processes. Humins are complex residues resulting from the Acid-Catalyzed Dehydration and condensation of sugars, having furan-rings in their polymeric structures. The work presented in this specific part of the HUGS project is essentially focusing on safety-related topics of all components and subsequent applications related to sugar dehydration technology. Priority actions were devoted to a first insight on the characterization of physicochemical safety profiles of the side-product humins and main (parent) furanic products. Some members of this large family of compounds (e.g. RMF and FDCA) have high volume potential which results in opening new doors towards the development of furanbased building blocks and a bio-based economy. Humins are residues or side products which can be burnt for energy. However, its safe and sustainable use in high-value applications could also become a key milestone in the so-called circular economy. In practice, the work has been developed in two main locations: primarily at the INERIS lab, located in Verneuil-en-Halatte and at Avantium, located in Amsterdam. Nearly all experimental research after the production of the components at Avantium was performed at INERIS. This involved the evaluation of physicochemical hazards of both humins (crude industrial humins and humin foams obtained by thermal curing) and a series of furanic compounds. Avantium is involved in the commercialization of humins, furanics and furanic polymers/materials as novel chemicals and materials. The work has encompassed: An extensive bibliographical review of humins, furanics, and their related products (polymers, composites) resulted in the following main conclusions o A lack of physicochemical safety-oriented studies for many furanic compounds and for humins was observed as these products are still in the early stage of development and only a few may be commercialized in the next 5 years.o Despite the limited availability of safety-related data, more studies on toxicity aspects have been conducted for a selected number of furanics than physicochemical safety-related aspects. o A few furanic family members that have been evaluated as biofuel components were found to have given better emphasis on addressing some physicochemical safety attributes. o Every modification of the process for acid-catalyzed sugar dehydration (such as solvent, temperature, residence time and sugar concentration) will result in different humins, which would certainly demand further characterization and safety profiling of the resulting humins. • Analytical development integrating the first examination of flash point distribution versus the Net Heating Values, and analysis of total heats of combustion of furanic compounds. • Design and development of experimental plan addressing the safety-related key parameters such as thermal stability, self-heating risks, fire-risk-assessment and flammability limits depending on the need for specific tests and availability of the test samples

Nelson, Elissa Helen. "Teen films of the 1980s : genre, new Hollywood, and generation X". Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-05-2692.

Resumen
Teen films from the 1980s are a part of the zeitgeist, but there is very little we actually understand about how they can be qualified and defined, and about the phenomenon of their prolific production, box office success, and cultural relevance. Gaining greater insights about these issues is essential for recognizing the significance of a specific group of films and the ways they address concerns of how teens come of age, but is also important for learning about the films’ historical and industrial contexts of production. Asking the questions why these kinds of films, why at this time, and what do they mean, leads to an awareness and identification of the phenomenon, but additionally, these lines of inquiry explore how the films and their success are tied to changing Hollywood industrial conditions, and to the shifting political, economic, social, and cultural climate of the U.S. in the 1980s. While previous scholars have studied the industrial context of production of teen films in the 1950s, and some have looked at the different types of films produced in the 1980s, the matter remains as to whether teen films actually constitute their own genre. Examining this question of genre is necessary for clarifying a number of issues: how the films relate to the culture at large; how representations of youth on screen can help us understand and reevaluate Generation X, the demographic group coming of age at the time; and how an assessment of these films contributes to a re-conceptualization of the ways films are produced, marketed, and categorized in the New Hollywood. Using primary data consisting of textual analysis and contextual analysis, and applying both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the study builds on and adds to previous approaches to genre. The contributions of this research are multifaceted. By gaining insights about these films, we can begin to appreciate more fully a maligned generation, the changing landscape of the entertainment industry, and a cultural phenomenon.

Resumen
Chapter 3 is devoted to the film-related activities of southern literary figures. From nineteenth-century writers including Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe (not a southerner by birth, but, as author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a huge influence on southern literary history) to modern figures like Thomas Dixon, William Faulkner, Lillian Hellman, and the Nashville Agrarians, the southern literary tradition made myriad contributions to film. Faulkner’s screenwriting work provides perhaps the most engaging example. Meanwhile, the efforts of African American writers to make similar contributions were limited by the hard facts of Jim Crow, leaving such important figures as Richard Wright and Langston Hughes, among many others, to generate their own opportunities, often abroad, in a far more uneven fashion. Black film critics like Lester A. Walton also emerged as important literary figures.

The question of home is a complicated one. While home is emplaced, the notion of home does not simply point to just a location. This chapter thus utilizes what I call the trope of the ‘vignette’ to look at the concept of home in order to identify some aspects of what constitutes and/or (re)creates it for displaced individuals. It does so by performing a close reading of key moments in the film Salt of this Sea by Annemarie Jacir and the collection of essays The Idea of Home by John Hughes.

Resumen
AbstractThe world was severely affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, causing, among others, possibly the worst global recession since 1930s. Of course not all sectors of economic activity were influenced in a similar way. While pharmaceutical companies had a boost in their profitability, other sectors including travel, tourism and leisure experienced huge losses and needed to be subsidized by the government. The current study investigates the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in the financial performance of firms listed in the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE). The sample includes 82 companies listed in the ASE during the period 2018–2021 according to clearly defined criteria. The selected firms represent a wide variety of business sectors, both industrial and services. The financial performance of those firms is depicted by a set of financial ratios. Findings of the empirical analysis do not suggest that pandemic had a significant impact on the financial performance of the sample firms. However, sectoral classification appears to affect the association between financial performance and pandemic. It appears that Industrial Mining and Metals firms and General Retail firms experienced an increase in their liquidity and profitability in the pandemic period while their leverage decreased in the same period. On the other hand, Technology and Hardware firms and Travel Leisure firms experienced a decrease in their liquidity and profitability, but an increase in their leverage. Generally speaking, services and crowd-dependent industries (such as that tourism) are most negatively impacted by the current COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of this study maybe useful to potential investors for making investment decisions as well as to policy makers for dealing with risk and the consequences of unpredictable events.

Resumen
In this chapter, Jamie Morgan describes the logic at work in private equity (PE) firms and how they articulate hierarchy-type global wealth chains. Morgan explains how PE firms use leveraged buyouts to concentrate and accelerate heightened returns to the firm within defined time period. This involves the deployment of a series of strategies that have the effect of reducing taxable income of acquired firms. The key asset strategies here are temporally based. PE firms take acquisitions into private ownership by using huge amounts of debt to buy them. This debt becomes a wealth chain asset in that it is tax deductible. Returns to the PE firm can flow across multiple corporate entities. Further, returns to the PE partners are taxed at the lower capital gains rate rather than as income tax. Using case examples from the UK, Morgan elaborates on how PE firms exploit global wealth chains.

Resumen
Near-IR-to-visible image conversion using a Hughes silicon liquid crystal light valve1 (LCLV) was demonstrated. An input 1.06-μm laser A, intensity of ~100 μW/cm2 was used to activate the 125-μm thick silicon photoconductor. The photoactivated current generated in the silicon by the 1.06-μm input beam results in a spatial voltage pattern which is transferred to the high impedance liquid crystal layer. This electric field causes molecular reorientation to occur in the liquid crystal film; since the liquid crystal film is birefringent, this reorientation causes the polarization of the visible projection beam (λ2 = 0.633 μm) to be rotated.

Resumen
The number of huge oil storage tanks is increasing in the world. If a fire occurs in one of these tanks, it is very difficult to suppress. Additionally, if a fire whirl occurs in an oil tank fire, it is extremely dangerous for firefighters to extinguish the fire. The authors have numerically studied huge fire whirls in a large oil tank depot and predicted the generation of those fire whirls. Here, another study is attempted to clarify the details of huge fire whirl in a large oil tank, using two kinds of fire whirl generation channels in CFD simulations using the software, FDS by NIST. Details of burning rates, velocities of whirling flames, radiative heat flux, heat release rates and whirling cycles are examined, using oil tanks with the diameters of 0.2 to 80 m. In oil tanks with a diameter of 80 m, a tall fire whirl is generated. The height is about 1000 m. In this study of oil tanks fires with small to large diameters, it has been found that fire whirl lengths are about 8 to 11 times of the oil tank diameter. The maximum radiative heat flux due to a fire whirl in 80 m diameter oil tanks exceeds 100 kW/m2. Since the maximum radiation is found at twice the distance of oil tank diameters from the tank centers, adjacent oil tanks may be ignited. This study has also examined a method used to prevent fire whirl generation in huge oil tanks.

Resumen
Abstract One of the essential thick film materials on the hybrid circuit is the conductor which performs as an interconnection between discrete components. However, metallurgical reaction between the conductor and solder during the soldering or thermal aging/cycling may cause electrical failure and/or loss of adhesive strength due to the reaction of Ag/Pd with Sn and subsequent intermetallics formed. A step soldering process, which applies a high-Pb solder layer over the conductor layer before the eutectic or near-eutectic Sn-Pb solder is applied, has been shown to prevent contact between the conductor and Sn in the solder, as long as the high-Pb layer does not dissolve into the low-Pb layer. Experiments were carried out to quantify the isothermal interdiffusion reaction rate and the interface displacement between the 88Pb-10Sn-2Ag and the eutectic 63Sn-37Pb solder layers between 195 and 235°C. The results were analyzed by the methodology developed by Lommel and Chalmers (1959) which was based on Nernst-Brunner theory of dissolution (Moelwyn-Hughes, 1947). The displacement of the interface follows an Arrhenius relationship with an activation energy of 98 KJ/mole, which is close to the activation energy of solid Sn diffusion into Pb. A process window was constructed to show that temperature is a more sensitive parameter influencing the reaction rate than time. A mathematical model was applied to predict the interfacial displacement during the reflow process and was found to correlate well with experimental results.

Resumen
Abstract In the recent years Additive Manufacturing (AM) methods, such as the Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM) technology, are getting more and more attractive and feasible for the realization of components and subcomponents of gas turbines. In particular, they are receiving much attention since, on one hand, the manufacturing of complex 3D geometries is allowed and, on the other, manufacturing and delivery times can be cut down. At the current state of the art, although AM is entering and spreading within modern gas turbines at fast pace, to the authors’ knowledge only few applications have yet been commercialized relatively to cooling holes, due to the intrinsic difficulties associated with such a critical feature. Lately, Baker Hughes is studying the possibility to manufacture film-cooling holes via the DMLM technology in order to exploit the flexibility of such innovative manufacturing method and hence eliminate additional processes and lead time. From the open literature it is known that additively manufactured holes can have a more irregular shape and higher roughness than traditional ones, which may lead not only to a reduction in coolant flow but more importantly to a decay of the film-cooling adiabatic effectiveness. For this reason, a test campaign has been conducted in collaboration with the University of Florence (Italy) with the objective of characterizing the performance (minimum passage diameter, flow check and adiabatic effectiveness) of AM vs traditional cylindrical holes on simple-geometry coupons built upon different construction angles. Results were then analyzed in order to fully compare the performance of AM vs traditional film-cooling holes at different operating regimes. In addition, selected holes were inspected through tomography in order to reveal the microscopic characteristics of lateral and outlet surfaces and get a further appreciation of the two different technologies. Ultimately the dependency of AM holes performance on print angles is sought with the purpose of characterizing the impact of such manufacturing technology on film-cooling holes design.

Resumen
Abstract Large-scale urban and forest fires, especially earthquake-induced fires may produce huge fire whirls and cause serious damage, due to the involved tornado-like strong wind, together with radiation and swirling flame. If fire whirls are generated, the danger to firefighters increases extremely. Many small-scale experiments and CFD simulations on fire whirls have already been conducted and also our previous numerical studies examined the generation of a large fire whirl in an oil tank. However, details of large-scale fire whirls have not been clarified yet. In this study, developing the previous works, additional CFD simulations are conducted to examine the generation process and particularly the stability of fire whirls. Three schemes to generate fire whirls are employed, using the 15 × 15 PMMA fuel array in windy conditions and n-heptane burning in a steel pan placed centrally on the floor in a tall channel with staggered four corner gaps, also using a channel with a single corner gap. The numerical results showed that the relationship between the fire area and the wind blowing area is important on the fire whirl generation in the PMMA scheme and n-heptane fire burning scheme in a channel. In addition to the channel gap size to produce a maximum fire whirl, the effects of channel height and horizontal channel area upon the fire whirl are examined. The wall temperatures of the channel are important to keep the swirling motion stably, particularly the wall temperature at about 300°C can stabilize the fire whirl in a channel. Also multiple small fires placed surrounding the central swirling fire can increase the stability of the fire whirl, although too strong multiple fires may destroy the stability. These phenomena may be related to the real fire whirl generation in the natural environment.

Resumen
Abstract Modern industrial gas turbines typically employ lean-premix combustors, which can limit pollutant emissions thanks to premixed flames, while sustaining high turbine inlet temperatures that increase the single-cycle thermal efficiency. As such, gas-turbine first stage nozzles can be characterized by a highly-swirled and temperature-distorted inlet flow field. However, due to several sources of uncertainty during the design phase, wide safety margins are commonly adopted, having a direct impact on engine performance and efficiency. Therefore, aiming at increasing the knowledge on combustor-turbine interaction and improving standard design practices, a non-reactive test rig composed of real hardware was assembled at the University of Florence, Italy. The rig, accommodating three lean-premix swirlers within a combustion chamber and two first stage film-cooled nozzles of a Baker Hughes heavy-duty gas turbine, is operated in similitude conditions. The rig has been designed to reproduce the real engine periodic flow field on the central vane channel, also allowing for measurements far enough from the lateral walls. The periodicity condition on the central sector was achieved by the proper design of both the angular profile and pitch value of the tailboards with respect to the vanes, which was carried out in a preliminary phase via a Design of Experiments procedure. In addition, circular ducts needed to be installed at the injectors outlet section to preserve the non-reactive swirling flow down to the nozzles’ inlet plane. The combustor-turbine interface section has been experimentally characterized in nominal operating conditions as per the temperature, velocity and pressure fields by means of a five-hole pressure probe provided with a thermocouple, installed on an automatic traverse system. To study the evolution of the combustor outlet flow through the vanes and its interaction with the film-cooling flow, such measurements have been replicated also downstream of the vanes’ trailing edge. This work allowed for designing and providing preliminary data on a combustor simulator capable of equipping and testing real hardware film-cooled nozzles of a heavy-duty gas turbine. Ultimately, the activity sets the basis for an extensive test campaign aimed at characterizing the metal temperature, film effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient at realistic aerothermal conditions. In addition, and by leveraging experimental data, this activity paves the way for a detailed validation of current design practices as well as more advanced numerical methodologies such as Scale-Adaptive Simulations of the integrated combustor-turbine domain.

Resumen
In modern gas turbines, the film cooling technology is essential for the protection of the hot parts, in particular of the first stage vanes and blades of the turbine, against the hot gases from the combustion process in order to reach an acceptable life span of the components. As the cooling air is usually extracted from the compressor, the reduction of the cooling effort would directly result to an increased thermal efficiency of the gas turbine. Understanding of the fundamental physics of film cooling is necessary for the improvement of the state-of-the-art. Thus, huge research efforts by industry as well as research organizations have been undertaken to establish high efficient film cooling technologies. It is common knowledge today that film cooling effectiveness degradation is caused by secondary flows inside the cooling jets, i.e. the Counter-Rotating Vortices (CRV) or sometimes also mentioned as kidney-vortices, which induce a lift-off of the jet. Further understanding of the secondary flow development inside the jet and how this could be influenced, has led to hole configurations, which can induce Anti-counter-rotating Vortices (ACRV) in the cooling jets. As a result, the cooling air remains close to the wall and is additionally distributed flatly along the surface. Beside different other technologies, the NEKOMIMI cooling technology is a promising approach to establish the desired ACRV. It consists of a combination of two holes in just one configuration so that the air is distributed mainly on two cooling air streaks following the special shape of the generated geometry. The original configuration was found to be difficult for fabrication by advanced machining processes. Thus, the improvement of this configuration has been reached by a set of geometry parameters, which lead to configurations easier to be manufactured but preserving the principle of the NEKOMIMI technology. Within a numerical parametric study several advanced configurations have been obtained and investigated under hot gas flow conditions. By systematic variation of the parameters a further optimization with respect to highest film cooling effectiveness has been performed. The best configuration outperforms the basic configuration by more than 20% regarding the overall averaged adiabatic film cooling effectiveness.

Resumen
In this paper, molecular dynamics simulation is carried out to study the explosive boiling of liquid water film heated by a hot copper plate in a confined space. A more physically-sound thermostat is applied to control the temperature of the metal plate and then to heat water molecules that are placed in the elastic wall confined simulation domain. The results show that liquid water molecules close to the plate are instantly overheated and undergo an explosive phase transition. A huge pressure in the region between liquid film and hot copper plate formed at the beginning and leads to a low density vapor region by partially vaporizing water film. A non-vaporization molecular layer, with a constant density of 0.2 g/cm3, tightly attached to the surface of the plate is observed. The z-component of COM (center of mass) trajectory of the liquid film in the confined space is tracked and analyzed. The one-dimensional density profile indicates the water film have a piston-like motion after short period of explosive boiling. Temperatures at three corresponding regions, which are vapor, liquid, and vapor from the top plate surface, are also computed and analyzed along with the piston-like motion of the bulk liquid film.

Resumen
During the storage and transportation of aviation kerosene, spill fire and explosion caused by the corrosion of pipeline or faulty operation when released and ignited, will pose a huge threat to tanks or facilities nearby. It is critical to investigate the interaction mechanism between spreading and burning of aviation kerosene spill fires to effectively plan for civil aviation safety. In order to gain a better understanding of aviation kerosene spill fire on sloping surface, a large-scale experimental platform with varying slope of oil groove or substrate surface for aviation kerosene spill fire has been designed and built. Aviation kerosene was selected as the fuel in the continuous spill fire for different leaking rates based on the rotation of the peristaltic pump. Spill fires with the substrate slope of 0° (as the baseline case), 0.5°, 1° and 3° were conducted. The typical burning characteristic parameters of spill fire measured are included burning area, burning rate, flame front et al. It is obtained that 1) the characteristic parameters except the averaged steady burning rate for continuous aviation kerosene spill fire increases apparently with the increasing leaking rate. 2) The effect of substrate slope on the burning of continuous spill fire is significant even though there is only 0.5° variation of the slope. 3) There is a diametrically opposite findings for the averaged steady burning rates and the initial spreading rates of continuous aviation kerosene spill fire decrease with the increasing substrate slope.

Resumen
Global value chains (GVCs) provide countries with opportunities to diversify trade, and boost productivity and growth by specializing in one stage of the production process. However, for the most part, Latin America and the Caribbean participation in GVCs remains low (18 percent) compared to Asia (28 percent) and Europe (34 percent). The COVID-19 pandemic, plus concerns regarding protectionism and the more frequent occurrence of natural disasters, have provided incentives for countries and companies to reassess their positions in global value chains. This crisis has taken a huge toll on trade, but it could also be an opportunity to boost regional integration and value chains within the region. Despite the crisis, some firms have performed well, even in those sectors where global demand has fallen, while others have lost market share. This paper analyzes the performance of individual firms, drawing on the study of rich micro data, to understand their different capacity of trade creation and destruction over the crisis. Results suggest five firm characteristics play a key role in explaining export performance during the pandemic: i) firm size, ii) diversification of export markets, iii) importer status of the firm, iv) distance from foreign suppliers, and v) performance of the firms suppliers and customers. The results are then used to outline policies fostering firms participation in global value chains.

Resumen
Government-driven credit played an important role in countervailing the private credit crunch in Brazil during the recent financial crisis. However, government credit concessions continued to expand after the economy recovered. This paper investigates some important features of this expansion using a huge repository of loan contracts between banks and firms, composing an unbalanced panel of almost 1 million firms between 2004 and 2012. The results show that larger, older and less risky firms have benefited most from the government-sponsored credit expansion. Additionally, although higher access to earmarked credit tends to lead to higher leverage, the effect on investment appears to be insignificant for publicly traded firms. Since interest rates on earmarked loans are lower than market interest rates, firms with higher access to this type of loan tend to lower the cost of debt.

Resumen
The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a huge blow to every country, and many governments have struggled to meet their populations’ urgent needs during the crisis. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stepped in to offer extra support to a large number of countries during the pandemic. However, Oxfam’s analysis shows that as of 15 March 2021, 85% of the 107 COVID-19 loans negotiated between the IMF and 85 governments indicate plans to undertake austerity once the health crisis abates. The findings in this briefing paper show that the IMF is systematically encouraging countries to adopt austerity measures once the pandemic subsides, risking a severe spike in already increased inequality levels. A variety of studies have revealed the uneven distribution of the burden of austerity, which is more likely to be shouldered by women, low-income households and vulnerable groups, while the wealth of the richest people increases. Oxfam joins global institutions and civil society in urging governments worldwide and the IMF to focus their energies instead on a people-centred, just and equal recovery that will fight inequality and not fuel it. Austerity will not ‘build back better’.
