Resumen
This document examines the public spaces created by the built environment of the city and asks: How is it that the apparently benign and benevolent activity of designing public space can in fact reinforce values that effectively marginalise and exclude significant groups of people? It contrasts the consequences of design decisions that are based on a value system of ???either/or??? with the possibility for designs based on ???both/and???. The perception of boundaries, the desire to dwell, the need to belong and the relationship of these phenomena to an understanding of ???self???, is proposed as the key means for analysing how public space is experienced by the user. The document uses the language of barriers and boundaries to interrogate how the value systems of those with the control over resources is manifest in the built environment of the city, and examines the impact such environments have on the user???s desire to ???dwell??? and need to belong. The potential for an alternate paradigm based on a system that recognises ???both/and??? to produce beneficial outcomes is then proposed, with a focus on an ethic of care to complement the ethic of justice that currently guides design decisions for public space. Personal interviews with architects, town planners, representatives from relevant government agencies, and users of public space, participation in public meetings and systematic observation of specific sites have been used to inform the argument and assess the validity of claims. The document is extended by a body of visual work that further interrogates the need to belong and broader issues of the primal significance of ???sanctuary??? to the ability to ???dwell???. The making and maintaining of boundaries, necessary to form a sanctuary, is portrayed as a process fraught with insecurities and vulnerabilities necessitating, in circumstances where personal power or the ability to influence one???s environment is diminished, the use of subversive tactics in order to create a space in which one can belong.

Salvador Dali, is known primarily as a Surrealist painter, dandy and provocateur. His theoretical works are far less known. Dali’s theories, interspersed throughout his eleven books and numerous essays and interviews range across the fields of art, architecture, psychology and science. In this thesis I examine these ideas, in particular Dali’s paranoiac critical method, for their potential application in contemporary issues regarding representation and architecture.

Resumen
There is a clear change in the architectural qualities of builder's houses constructed before World War II and in the postwar years. The primary evidence is in the houses themselves and their architectural qualities. This study focuses on the first 20 years of Federal Housing Administration insured mortgage builders' houses constructed in the Pacific Northwest region, although expanded with some examples from across the nation to illustrate the general application of the thesis and that this was not a regional phenomenon.

Resumen
This work focuses on the cross-section between classic still-life art and complex personal issues. It uses traditional and nontraditional still life photography to tell individual vignettes about my life. I explore unresolved issues, which offer subtle suggestion of an experiential narrative. All of the backgrounds and objects included are intentional and represent specific places, people, and events. I allow the viewer to bring their own experiences to the photographs, by not giving them specifics of my stories. I used this work as a way for me to move past these experiences and my hope is that they might also help others. I have created beauty from my dwelling.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis is an exploration into the modern meaning of the minimum dwelling. It discusses how this meaning gradually became disengaged from the minimum house. It proposes a new definition of the minimum dwelling based on the minimum social unit, that is, the individual. At the beginning of the 20th century, the term Existenzminimum dwelling proposed a new way of living. This modernist definition of the minimum dwelling was based on a reproducible expendable minimum house. This thesis argues that this definition is no longer valid; yet, any present definition of the minimum dwelling is still informed by it. The reconfiguration of the minimum house as an expendable object disempowered the house as a tool for the experience of the home. This dissociation of the house and the home is a condition that has gradually diminished the role of the house in everyday life and redefined the experience of the home. The meaning of the home is now invested in a multiplicity of locations, experiences and objects. This thesis defines the minimum home as a core of personally meaningful possessions, the spatial configurations they create and recreate and the information they carry. This thesis’s definition of the minimum dwelling is based on this minimum home. This argument is pursued through two modes of inquiry. On the one hand with a critical analysis of texts, buildings, architectural projects and works of art. On the other hand by the development of a series of projects. These two investigations are parallel and overlapping. In this document, they are organised in a linear way. This structure assists the progress of the argument and reveals the gradual development of this thesis from an interest to develop a truly individual minimum house to the realisation that the minimum dwelling is a personal project.

Resumen
The following thesis is a 38,400 word document of a part-time PhD by project undertaken at the painting department of The Royal College of Art between October 2002 and September 2008. The purpose of this research has been to reflect on how an expansive interpretation of the architectural model operates as a mode of fragmentary thought for dwelling. I extend critical / theoretical approaches to the use of the model within my art practice, and its equivalent, 'the essay form,' in the written component of the thesis. I begin by deflning the use of the model within a speciflc work I made early in the project, and also discuss the model's ability to operate between more rigidly deflned disciplines of knowledge. I use Benjamin's notion of immanent critique to reflect on the poeticised potential of the model form to unfold information, by probing the rapport between materials and motifs, groupings and spacings and the made and the found. I also show how the process of thought through the material development of the work, informed an equivalent fragmentary approach to writing. In the four main chapters, I attend to a critical pairing four Bruegel paintings and four particular buildings to understand how both painting and building can be revealed as a thought model for dwelling. The chapters in the following order read Bruegel's Fall of Icarus in relation to Casa Malaparte, Procession to Calvary with Melnikov's Cylindical House Studio, The Tower of Babel with Kiesler's unbuilt notion of The Endless House, and flnally the two dwellings initiated by Wittgenstein with Hunters in the Snow. I conclude by returning briefly to a recent piece of my own work to consider how the model of thought for dwelling has developed within my current practice.

Westoby, Kay. "Body, transparency and tactile dwelling : are we nearly here yet?" Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/108505/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis proceeds from an attempt to articulate the body. At its core, however, is not the attempt to offer a definition of the body but instead to articulate a problem of touching on it. As such, it is motivated by a question at once banal and impossible: ‘Are we nearly here yet?’ Following Jean-Luc Nancy’s engagement with the account of space and being-there proposed by Martin Heidegger, it relates the materiality of the body to a broader role of touch and sense in constructing a world of engagements in which the body is never “here” but always “there”, always exposed in its touch upon the other. Following Nancy, this thesis begins by opening an ontological formulation of space and embodiment in which the materiality of the body allows for sense to pattern a world of bodies always separated from each other but situated in relation to each other. Sense, on Nancy’s account, is both bodily and conceptual; sense is the touch of vision, of the hands, of the body, and of understanding. Emphasising this multiple formulation of touch, this thesis offers an ontology of space as both material and transparent, in which this transparency figures the potential of the world to be continually re-spaced according to the touches and relationships enacted within it. After establishing this ontology of body and touch, the thesis enacts a series of attempts to approach the body, conducted in relation to encounters with bodies through photographs, painting and self-portraiture, as well as encounters with bodies that reveal aspects of their particular embodiment at moments of disruption or in their pathological relationships to the world. In each case, what is explored are figures of approach and withdrawal, turn and return, in which the body is nearly available to touch, but always elusive.

Resumen
Climate change and rapidly changing labour markets call for societies to increase their level of resilience. Parallelly, mental illness is tormenting Swedes in increasing numbers. How can society become more resilient unless its inhabitants are? Research have shown that individuals need time for introspection as well as to be part of a group, to obtain balance. People in groups tend to spontaneously form rituals with the function of explaining society, forming rules and bonds and give people a sense of meaning. Social infrastructure is a mean to make people come together, form rituals and develop their social capital - something that increase resilience both on an individual and social level. Architecture at its best can be said to point at, or promote, a desired lifestyle. Because of that, every major shift in society tends to bring about new forms of living. This project is a kind of urban, vertical monastery for non-believers as a way to explore future living. The idea is to find a new example of living and working that can help set a new norm, better adapted to the needs of the 21st century. A housing solution that work as social infrastructure, where individualism and collectiveness can meet. An important part of the project is exploring how small individual space can be when well dimensioned common space and function is offered at the same time. Small individual space help, or force, people to become minimalists due to lack of storage capacity. But minimalism is not just owning few things, it can also be low-key activism. By using yourself as an example you become a sort of activist resisting the consumption society and at the same time advocating for environmental sustainability. Minimalism can also be seen as a religion, a way to ritualize your daily life, to make sense of an increasingly scary world in lack of other belief systems to fall back on.

A impactante afirmação a linguagem fala retira do homem o domínio das palavras e o devolve à poesia, à arte e à linguagem mesma.
The present thesis proposes a reflection about dwelling. Like Heidegger, we also try to reflect on the way contemporary man dwells and the consequences that contemporaneity generates in philosophical thinking. In this sense, Heidegger s perspective and its nuances substantiate this research, without limiting the way we understand dwelling. The artistic expressions with which Heidegger dialogue in his work broaden and foster this question. In Being and Time the reflection on dwelling is permeated by the familiar and by uncanniness, which, surprisingly, seems to take many forms in the work of the philosopher. The uncanniness arises in the Greek sense of astonishment, but it is also related to mystery and sacredness as well as the alien and the exile. It does not always happens in opposition to the familiar, but there is also the possibility of original confrontation with the familiar. Even with the speed, the immediacy and the need to overcome distances that the contemporary world requires each time, it seems that art still preserves the possibility of philosophical reflection and the search for the truth of Being. It is a time, as Heidegger says, that threatens thinking that, by its turn, needs time and deepening. The poetry, in its nominative power, always allows the word to keep its unveiling character, due to its multiple senses, removing all possibilities of controlling the language. The statement the language talks withdraws from man the command of the words and restores poetry, art, and language. Sculptural bodies do not belong to the order of phisys nor to human productivity, but to that of techné, which confers the possibility of setting-itself-into-the-work of the truth. Techné has appeared, since the time of the Greeks, as a knowledge, and thus the Greek perspective of truth proposes the movement of appearing and retracting (veiling and unveiling). Immersed in the familiar, without the knowledge inherent to the reflection through art and philosophical thought, in the absence of the uncanniness and of its movement (or appropriative event), men lose their poetic dwelling. This possibility is related to the poetic dwelling as a necessary condition for man s measurement, his dimension between earth and sky. Although full of merits, man s place has always been and always will be on this earth and under this sky. There is no other possibility; there is no other way of dwelling.

Resumen
This thesis is an inter-disciplinary and inter- cultural exploration of home as understood as the place in which we usually live. Empirical research in an Australian suburb and an Indian town provide the fabric from which cultural studies engages with phenomenology to produce a design used to cut and style this exploration. Motivated by an interest in what threads contribute to the weave of contemporary household dwelling, this thesis revisits the two questions used by Heidegger to frame his essay ‘Building Dwelling Thinking’: “What is it to dwell?” and “How does building belong to dwelling?” It is an inquiry committed to its respondents as bearers and representatives of ‘structures of feeling’ circulating within the socio-cultural milieu or habitus in which they live and engage with the idea of ‘home.’ This inquiry offers an exploration of the chief constituent mediums of home which I call its ‘archi-texture’. As such, it looks at location, physical and material attributes, domestic technology and household membership as framed by the presence or absence of a family. This thesis is almost certainly the only example of an empirically grounded examination of Heidegger’s ontological exposition of dwelling. Hence I position it as a meditation on the mediations of dwelling rather than a judgmental critique, although in no sense do I believe it to be either a dispassionate position nor an impartial digest of the research material.

Resumen
This study examines long-term change in Indigenous settlement in Virginia's Rappahannock River Valley and its underlying causes during the Archaic Period (10,000-3000 BP). Previously-unstudied archaeological collections from two sites along the Rappahannock River provided evidence of demographic changes from the Middle Archaic to the Late Archaic period, and offered evidence of shifting settlement patterns. To evaluate why different locations were selected for Middle Archaic settlement versus Late Archaic settlement, the overall topography, hydrology and environmental settings of the two sites were evaluated by geospatial analyses of LiDAR images. The reasons for the changes were assessed further using the research framework of Historical Ecology to consider long-term environmental data in conjunction with paleoclimate, biological and archaeological information. Climate change, sea-level rise, formation of the Chesapeake Bay and the effects of embayment on the landscape of the tributary Rappahannock River were evaluated. I present a line of reasoning that links the Late Archaic choice of settlement location to the new riverine resources that became available as the Rappahannock River flow-rate slowed dramatically with Chesapeake embayment. A rationale and broad time-line for this transition are deduced. This information is coupled with analyses of the archaeological lithic assemblages to examine Indigenous actions and choices made relevant to settlement, subsistence and technology in the face of environmental change. These studies benefited from consultation with present-day members of the Rappahannock Tribe.

Resumen
This study explores post-contact changes to the ordinary Maori whare. The main physical characteristics of the ordinary whare at contact are identified by accessing archaeological and written 18th century ethnographic data. Changes in the ordinary whare in the period from contact to 1940 are discussed. Evidence from historical archaeology, written 19th century ethnographic accounts and from previous academic research is considered. In addition, changes in the ordinary whare are highlighted, based on evidence from an empirical survey of whare depicted in sketches, paintings, engravings and photographs. Rigorous statistical analysis was beyound the scope of a Masters thesis, however trends in the data are presented. A range of these are reproduced illustrating the text. After changing gradually for 130 years, the ordinary Maori whare appears to have been widely replaced by European-style houses in the early decades of the 20th century. In Aotearoa/New Zealand in the 1990s, it is apparent that Maori culture has survived the 220 or so years since contact. These years entailed increasing contact between Maori and European. In mid 20th century academic studies of Maori communities, European-style houses were found to have been used in line with continuing Maori conceptions. This evidence indicates that traditional ideas were transferred to European-style houses. The gradual changes in the whare prior to the 20th century indicate that it was a conservative social construction of space conforming to expectations about vernacular architecture generally. But the process by which Maori culture was maintained and reproduced was complicated that further study of Maori conceptions of space within the home is required.

Resumen
In Melbourne, Australia, current debates regarding the ongoing provision of suburban residential development to meet housing demand tend to focus on its capacity to contribute to the overall achievement of sustainable development at the metropolitan scale. Within this context, sustainability issues are framed as an environmental problem, and the legislative proposals to address them, in general, are technology focused. However there is growing evidence that deeper changes in human behaviour and understanding are required to achieve a sustainable outcome at the residential scale, and that these 'sustainability issues' are in fact environmental symptoms of a wider human problem. This thesis presents the results of an investigation of domestic architecture, as experienced by thirteen people, eleven of whom have voluntarily chosen to design, build and live in sustainable houses in and around Melbourne. The respondents' complex, multidimensional lived experiences of house, home, place and sustainability are explored within a framework based on theories of place. The first of these theories is Heidegger's concept of Being, especially Being-in-the-World, and the way in which this relates to the human experience of place. The second is the related concept of Dwelling, which for Heidegger is the basic character of Being and is intimately connected with building. The third perspective draws heavily from Heidegger's concepts of Being and Dwelling to define place as the experience of rootedness, authenticity, and insidedness, and the absence of these as placelessness. The fourth theory is the genius loci of place, also referred to as the spirit of place. Dwelling is the point of departure for this theory which discusses the way in which architecture concretises the spirit of place, so place may be experienced as an integrated totality. The final theory, articulated by Bachelard, suggests that place, as memory, is the conflation of intimate experience, memory, and imagination. This perspective is explored through the experience of home, especially the memories of home. Using phenomenography as a research approach, the qualitatively different ways the respondents describe their understanding and experience of house, home, place and sustainability, and the relationships between these, are explored. Insight into these understandings and experiences is achieved through the use of unstructured, in-depth interviews and a purposefully designed mixed-media package (cultural probe) which aims to provoke inspirational, creative and emotional responses. Conclusions are drawn regarding the interplay of notions of house, home and place and sustainability, and the ways in which the relationships between these phenomena influence sustainable behaviour.

Resumen
Traditional Dwellings in Ankara Citadel have an important place among both Anatolian and Ankara Traditional Dwellings, reflecting certain characteristics of their own. Citadel Area, as one of the oldest settlements in Ankara, has been hosting both residential and commercial activities for a very long period of time. Today, the area has regained its popularity
as a commercial, cultural and tourism center with the potential of its remaining values from the past and conservation movements held in the area starting from 1970&
#8217
s. Within these circumstances, the residential pattern inside Citadel area, the boundaries of which are strictly defined by historical fortress walls, carries the highest risk in the area. At this point, main factors threatening the existing pattern can be categorized in four titles, which also constitute the definition of the problem that the thesis is going to deal with. First factor is the rapid change in original use of traditional dwellings in the Outer Citadel due to the pressure derived from the increase in tourism, commercial and cultural activities in the area. Second factor is the assignment of gastronomic function as the most popular and major function among new functions of restored traditional dwellings in the area. The third factor is the disappearance of original characteristics and values of traditional dwellings due to restoration projects, which is caused by the discordant relation of the spatial, functional requirements of gastronomic use with the original characteristics, spatial capacity of traditional dwellings. Last factor is the present physical situation of traditional dwellings, which doesn&
#8217
t correspond with their physical situation in the projects approved by the Board of Conservation of Ankara. Outer Citadel is the study area for the problem with its clear boundaries, which is actually a buffer zone between the commercial, cultural, tourism zone outside the Citadel Area and Inner Citadel, in which the existing residential pattern, mostly preserving its original characteristics and use, is located. This thesis mainly intends to point out how the original characteristics, values and spatial quality of traditional dwellings are affected from the gastronomic function in both positive and negative ways within the context of contemporary understanding and methods of conservation. Discordances and problems between the approved restoration projects and the restoration implementations are another subject of the thesis. The thesis starts with an introduction chapter, informing about the theoretical framework established for the study, the definition and aim, which also informs about the methodology followed. Second chapter consists of a historical research on Ankara Citadel and examinations on the present situation of the area, traditional dwellings in Ankara Citadel and other developments in the city which have an effect on Citadel Area and traditional dwellings. Third chapter includes the analyses of traditional dwellings chosen for the study with their evaluations, in which the original characteristics and values these dwellings are also indicated. Fourth chapter consists of the analyses of the restoration projects of the traditional dwellings again with their evaluations, considering both the present situation and the original characteristics and values. Thesis ends with a conclusion chapter, which makes a general evaluation of the study within the context of modern conservation approaches.

Resumen
This research addresses one of the major cumulative problems in Saudi Cities; the fragmented developments of urban lands. Such fragmentation is caused by wasteful standards and measures that are used during subdivision of land, and building control codes for residential units within plans after they are approved. Moreover, it is because of lack of application of urban information systems in neighbourhood planning. The main goal of this study is to draw up a guidance policy that defragments wasteful spaces and consequently reduces costs of both dwellings and neighbourhoods by adjusting consumption of space in regard to the socio-economic characteristics of the majority of the residents. The case study is Al-Madinah owing to it had unique form of traditional houses, and neighbourhoods known as `Ahwash'. They are the two main categories of units that form the city as a whole. At the end, the study draws a guidance technique as a recommendation for future planners to use Urban Information Systems as tools to study Neighbourhood Planning to de-fragment space within dwellings and neighbourhoods, and re-adjust building regulations with regard to their socio-economic characteristics and the local culture of Al-Madinah. The final results and proposals are a major contribution for the majority of residents who are still tenants to enable them to buy a plot and build on it, and the municipality can reduce the costs of their services among fragmented urban areas to upgrade their facilities within neighbourhoods, infrastructure agencies can reduce the cost of networks and improve the quality of their services and reduce the cost of service for public, and developers can understand the actual demands for housing not only for their own revenue by providing only luxury measures in dwellings but also to provide affordable dwellings that can be owned by residents with lower socio-economic characteristics.

Resumen
Loneliness is a significant problem for older adults and can lead to negative health and social outcomes. Having a companion pet is beginning to be recognized as a way loneliness can be reduced for older persons. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the effect of pets on the level of loneliness in persons 60 years old or older who live alone and independently in a large metropolitan community in the North Central Texas area. Using a non-random snowball sample of older individuals (N = 252), who met the study criteria, each subject was administered the researcher-developed demographic data survey instrument containing the following variables: (a) pets - having a pet/wanting a pet, (b) age, (c) gender, (d) marital status, (e) living alone, (f) losses within the last six months, (g) interactions with family members, (h) interactions with others outside of the family, (i) highest educational level achieved, (j) employment or volunteer involvement in the community, (k) religious participation, and (l) self perceived health status. The UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 was used to obtain the loneliness scores. Prediction of loneliness and relationship with the independent variables was tested using frequency, correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multivariate analysis using ordinary least-squares (OLS) regression analysis. The findings from this study showed that those older adults living alone who did not have a pet but would like to have a companion pet had higher levels of loneliness (p<0.05). Other findings suggested that older adults' loneliness was less if they had moderate religious participation and interactions with others (p< 0.05). Future studies are needed to examine the effects that pets have on feelings of loneliness and the ability of older individuals to cope effectively with those feelings.

Resumen
Tropical forests of the world are fast disappearing and there is a race to understand patterns of species distribution in space and time. Studying species distributions can provide better frameworks for conservation of these ecologically important patches of floral and faunal diversity. The island of Sri Lanka is a well known harbour of unique and highly threatened biodiversity. Tropical lowland forest is remnant in the south-west of the island now mainly existing in small patches. While most are small disturbed fragments, Sinharaja Forest Reserve represents one of the largest remaining patches of this important ecosystem. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve, it has a dual role as a conservation area and a historically important resource forest. While the distribution of vegetation diversity has been well documented, analyses of invertebrate species distributions are lacking. This thesis investigated a key arthropod group, ground dwelling ants, in relation to environmental gradients within the forest. Cumulative results demonstrate the high diversity of the forest patch. In an area representing less than half the reserve, over 173 ground dwelling ant species were found in distinct assemblages throughout the forest. Since the forest is located upon a series of parallel ridges, ant species distribution was first analysed in terms of this small elevation change. Species richness declined over a vertical incline from 430 m to 660 m, highlighting a possible small-scale, mountain mass effect. This section of the reserve is also characterised by a patch of once-logged forest (30 years previously). A study was undertaken to investigate whether there were residual effects of selective logging on the reserve.Significant differences between species assemblages in once-logged forest and unlogged forest add to growing evidence that selectively logged forests continue to remain distinct from unlogged forest even after decades of regeneration. Ant distribution was then analysed for their relationship with habitat heterogeneity and tree species distribution. Long-term research on tree species in the SFR has demonstrated a close relationship to habitat complexity. Ant species appear to respond more to the structural heterogeneity of the vegetation than to actual topographic variation within the forest. From a conservation perspective, maintaining the integrity of this highly diverse forest is imperative. The impact of anthropogenic land uses surrounding the forest was investigated in terms of ant assemblages along the forest edges. Significant differences were found between assemblages within the edges bordered by different matrix types. Even relatively large forest remnants can be affected by the surrounding matrix land uses and encouraging the growth of structurally similar vegetation and maintaining low disturbance along the borders should attenuate the effect of the edge. Overall, the highly heterogeneous distribution of ant assemblages within the SFR demonstrates the potential for other small patches to be harbours of further species diversity. Future research should be undertaken to assess the diversity and distribution of ant species within this region and encourage the protection of this remnant diversity.

Resumen
This Thesis is aimed at evaluating the options of renovation for an existing residential building to make it more energy efficient. The various aspects in the basic structures of residential homes are discussed in order to help the user identify the areas of the house for which renovation is required to improve the energy efficiency of the building. These aspects include doors, roof and wall in addition to various systems of electrical wiring, mechanical systems of ventilation, heating and cooling and plumbing systems for the efficient flow of water throughout the house. The renovation options have been described in detail to provide as many possibilities to the user as possible. The building taken for renovation is a 1953 suburban home which has been awarded the honor of being the first building to be labeled as Zero Energy Home in its vicinity. This has made the home so efficient that its expenditure of energy has become equivalent to its energy generation, therefore, cancelling each other out and creating an estimate of zero energy.

Resumen
Musical instruments are not static, unchanging objects. They are, instead, things that materially evolve in symmetry with human practices. Alterations to an instrument's design often attend to its ergonomic or expressive capacity, but sometimes an innovator causes an entirely new instrument to arise. One such instrument is the Chapman Stick. This instrument's history is closely intertwined with global currents that have evolved into virtual, online scenes. Virtuality obfuscates embodiment, but the Stick's world, like any instrument's, is optimally related in intercorporeal exchanges. Stickists circumvent real and virtual obstacles to engage the Stick world. Using an organology informed by the work of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, this study examines how the Chapman Stick, as a material "thing," speaks in and through a virtual, representational environment.

Resumen
Whole body vibration (WBV) is a mode of exercise by which an individual stands on a vibration platform that may be oscillating and therefore creating vertical displacement which affects gravitational forces acting upon the whole body. Manipulations of platform amplitude or frequency can affect the rate of change of the WBV (i.e. acceleration) acting upon an individual. The specific influences of frequency or amplitude, however, are unknown. The aim of the study, therefore, was two fold; (1) to identify chronic WBV effects of neuromuscular performance within a community dwelling older adult sample, and; (2) to identify WBV methods that would elicit chronic neuromuscular performance changes within such a sample. The study incorporated a randomised controlled experimental design to examine the aim. Seventy-three community dwelling older adults freely consented to the requirements of the study (mean age = 72.0 years). Neuromuscular performance was quantified with the 5-Chair Stands test, the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and the Tinetti test. Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) was qualified with the SF-36 Health Survey. A six week WBV intervention significantly changed the quantifiers of neuromuscular performance in a community dwelling older adult sample. The WBV intervention significantly reduced time taken to complete the 5-Chair Stands test (p <.05) and the TUG test (p <.05). The six week WBV intervention significantly improved Tinetti test scores (p <.05). The six week WBV intervention significantly improved all components of HRQOL. For the 5-Chair Stands test, a three WBV sessions per week intervention elicited significantly larger (p <.05) neuromuscular performance gains than a two WBV sessions per week intervention in the target sample. For the TUG test, a three WBV sessions per week intervention elicited significantly larger (p <.05) neuromuscular performance gains than a zero and one WBV session per week intervention in the target sample. A significant difference (p <.05) was found between pre-test and post-test Tinetti test scores for all WBV intervention groups. There was an insignificant difference (p >.05) found within the control group of community dwelling older adults for the Tinetti test. Detraining effects were observed three weeks after the cessation of the six week WBV intervention for the three WBV sessions per week group. Neuromuscular performance reduced after the detraining period. Vibration platform dynamics (manipulated frequency and controlled amplitude) showed that gravitational forces created by the WBV were safe since no injuries were associated with the intervention and since participant compliance was 100% during the six week WBV intervention. The methods of this study showed a chronic WBV intervention to be a safe and easily administered exercise to improve neuromuscular performance and HRQOL of a community dwelling older adult sample. Specifically, WBV could be used as a safe and effective tool to improve aspects of normal daily function such as body balance and gait speed.

Resumen
This study design was to identify and examine how disaster experience, self-efficacy, and demographic factors influence disaster preparedness in community-dwelling older adults. Current data indicates the United States is rapidly aging. Parallel to this significant increase among the elderly population, natural disasters are more prevalent. Consequently, older adults are affected adversely by these disasters and exposure to social vulnerabilities during the disaster cycle. For the purpose of this study, non-identifiable secondary data were analyzed. Sources of the data were the 2007 and 2008 National Center for Disaster Preparedness surveys. The sample focus of this study was adults 50 and older. Regression analyses identified important predictors of disaster preparedness in the survey respondents. Sample adults with previous disaster experience are two times more likely to be in a higher category for having an emergency plan than those respondents with no observable effects of self-efficacy and no previous disaster experience. The frequency of natural disasters in the United States has generated a renewed interest in disaster management, in particular, disaster preparedness. Nevertheless, the focal point of disaster preparedness is no longer the rudimentary stockpile of water, a first aid kit, and a battery operated radio. To advance the field of disaster management it is vital for gerontologist to approach disaster preparedness by differentiating between stockpiling supplies and social cognitive interventions that fundamentally alters preparedness behavior.

Resumen
Over the past few decades, the development of coastal areas has become an increasingly contested arena. For many years, tourism in remote coastal areas has been the preserve of a few intrepid campers, surfers and recreational fishers. More recently, however, numbers along parts of the coast have increased rapidly, not only contributing to an expansion of camping activity, but also pressure for more commercially oriented tourism. This has contributed to concerns about the environmental sustainability of tourism in remote coastal areas. Governments have increasingly been faced with the challenge of balancing ecological concerns with the pursuit of economic development. Adding to the complexity are the differing needs and demands of various segments of the tourism market all looking to enjoy particular places. Balancing the demands of campers, backpackers, package tourists and others in a single place is often wrought with conflict. This study explores some of these issues in a remote coastal area in Western Australia. The Ningaloo coast has evolved from a difficult to reach destination used by a small number of campers, to one of Western Australia's most popular tourist destinations in just two decades. The thesis examines the factors underlying the growth and change of tourism in the region, tracing its evolution from a few small rudimentary campsites to proposals for large scale resort developments. Of particular interest to this thesis is how planning and policy processes aim to address developmental pressures and resource use/planning conflicts. Additionally, this study provides an insight into the issues facing the informal, long term camper as the traditional segment of Ningaloo's tourism market. It examines how current planning and policy for the Ningaloo coastline affects this group by reshaping traditional tourism use of the area.

Marseille, Gilles.

This study concerns the domestic architecture in Nancy and the 19 towns of its suburbs from 1919 to 1939. The important size of the corpus (6600 buildings) and of the area studied highlights the urban and architectural processes that contribute to the creation of the city. The relationships between the city council, developers, social housing organizations and intellectual societies are analyzed to trace the path that leads from the plan to the urban reality. The post-war reconstruction project, the law controlling urbanism or social housing (Loucheur Act) and the effects of the 1930’s crisis on the land and housing development are looked back on using modern technical (GIS) and conceptual tools. The comparisons with national (even international) models place the study in a broader perspective where Nancy and its suburbs become a medium for reflection on this moment in the history of French cities. In addition, the exhaustive inventory allows looking at all the building production without hierarchy. This study, combining the mundane and the outstanding, highlights permanencies and hybridisations. The legacy of Eclecticism and Art Nouveau coexists with the diffusion of new trends such as the Modern movement and Art Deco. The examination of Nancy’s case contributes to the new definition of the latter style and of a better understanding of its evolution during the 1930’s. Finally, this study is the opportunity to show that domestic architecture is a physical transcription of a social order, which is reflected in the quality of interior design and building facades as medium of representation

Cieszkowski, W. J. "The iconography of rural space : notions of "la terre" as visual and textual narratives of poetic dwelling in the art of Jean-François Millet (1814-75) and the prose of Richard Millet (1953-)". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/624493/.

Resumen
The key problematic of this study is located in the notions of le paysan, le pays and le paysage, and their representation in visual and textual modes. By linking one visual artist, Jean-François Millet (1814-1875), with one textual artist, the novelist and polemicist Richard Millet (1953- ), an ethos of symbolic and thematic fraternal consanguinity is established. In order to situate and contextualize these notions of rural space and to locate them in the wider implications of La France profonde, this thesis adopts a basic comparative approach in order to ground the analyses in an inter-medial, trans-epochal approach. The principal argument posits the iconography of rural space as a universal and atemporal constant and as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of existence, as an exploration of notions of the past, the nature of belonging, loss and exile. Each of the seven chapters in this thesis may be read to a certain extent as a selfcontained essay, as a meditation on the nature of seeing and decoding of the visual and textual space: the interpretation of art and text in the form of a discourse, a semiotic ‘map’. However, throughout the thesis there runs a linear argument and analysis which thematically and organically links all seven, seeking to widen notions of la terre in order to encompass an eco-awareness, a cosmic unicity of the human with the natural in terms of ‘poetic dwelling’. An opening examination of the theory and practice of iconographic recognition leads to a questioning of the narratives informing the reconstitution of the past and the essence of la terre as possession and belonging. It is then posited that the notional metaphysics of landscape imply a dualistic, semiotic reading of landscape as ‘inscape’ or ‘otherness’. The notion of the Other is then introduced as the female Other, which leads to an examination of the feminization of rural space. Finally, the life story of both Millets is posited as a via crucis (patterned by melancholia and a form of ‘perpetual mourning’) and the last chapter concludes with a metaphysical examination of the rural space as a locus of poetic dwelling. To dwell poetically implies a deep understanding and empathy with the natural: this study argues that the representation of the rural space, through the individual art of each Millet, is metaphysically and existentially consistent with the imperatives of a meaningful and purposeful existence.

Resumen
The Consumer's Guide is designed to help consumers by providing guidelines for the purchase of specific energy-efficient household appliances- water heaters, air conditioning and heating systems, windows, dishwashers, refrigerators, clothes washers, and dryers. This serves two major purposes: to decrease the environmental impact of those products and to save consumers money over the lifetime of the products. The seven major appliances covered in this work are things that consumers tend to purchase quickly when their older models wear out and with little research into their energy and/or water efficiency. The guide begins with a general introduction and an explanation of the need for energy conservation. Explanations of how they work, purchasing tips, installation tips, maintenance tips, tips for additional energy efficiency, and case studies are given for each appliance. Printable pamphlets are included at the end.

Resumen
The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning have been conducting housing needs assessments since 1995 (Boverket 2015). The latest assessment was conducted in 2015 and showed that 71,000 homes will need to be built annually by 2020. To be able to contribute to building more homes, Willhem AB is carrying out a project called ”Så bygger vi för alla”. As part of the work, this thesis will examine the building rules and how they can contribute to innovation. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate which rules, laws and norms we have to keep to in Sweden regarding housing construction. The aim of the work is to investigate whether the regulatory framework can create creativity amongst the players in the market. This thesis is limited to examining which laws, government policies and eventual municipal requirements that exist in Sweden. Therefore, industry rules, such as the AMA, and contracting regulations, such as AB and ABT, will not be taken into consideration. The survey is also limited to newly built multifamily houses only. Finally, the reference objects that are studied in the thesis will be in Sweden and be limited to being either construction-technical or plan-based innovative and have been recently executed. This thesis is based on the existing regulations and theories from previous studies. The data collected for this survey will be studied from a qualitative point of view. The survey aims to investigate a number of reference objects more thoroughly and conduct interviews with key people involved in the project, which means a qualitative approach is best suited. In 1987, Sweden received a new building legislation according to Örnhall (2017), which has resulted in a transition from specification requirements to functional requirements in order to increase the liberty in housing production. However, according to Örnhall (2017 the new legislation has contributed to a wider picture of the regulatory framework. The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning is the authority that has the overall responsibility for community planning, urban development, construction and housing (Nordstrand 2008). The most important laws and government policies that the social planning sector primarily have to obey are the Planning and Building Act (PBL), the Planning and Building Regulation (PBF) as well as and the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (BBR) (Örnhall, Swedish Construction Service 2017a). The Planning and Building Act (SFS 2010:900), PBL, regulates the planning for land and water whilst the responsibility for maintaining the regulations lies with the municipalities. The purpose of PBL is to promote social development for long-term, equal, social and environmental sustainable development for today’s society and future generations (SFS 2010: 900). When creating new homes, special consideration should be given to long term use of the home (Boverket 2016). At the interview stage, six areas emerged that were considered to be particularly problematic or interesting for the development of innovative and cheap housing. These areas were; accessibility, municipal requirements, rules, advice and interpretations, energy, innovation and development, and the ability to build for everyone. I perceived the accessibility aspect as very complex. Several interviewees argue that the accessibility requirements entail an increased cost for new builds, in one case it was even expressed that today’s availability requirements means the housing becomes less accessible to a larger group. The rules for creating an inclusive society also emerged at the interview stage while another recurring opinion is the renewal of the legislation. Several interviewees stated that they consider the regulations to be outdated and need to be updated according to today’s society. Based on this, I found The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning requirements contradictory whilst providing support for innovation, many requirements inhibits the development of housing. Therefore, extensive research should be carried out on how people in Sweden want to live today; thereafter the regulations can be updated according to today’s needs. In one way or another, all reference objects have been at the forefront when it comes to housing development. A common factor for the various reference objects is that a major problem was identified in all projects, which led to a product or solution being developed. They show that there is not one solution to the problem, but that different solutions can be found to achieve the same goal: better housing for more people.

Resumen
Baigiamajame magistro darbe nagrinėjama postmodernizmo stiliaus raiška privačiuose gyvenamuosiuose namuose Lietuvoje, nuo XX a. 9 dešimtmečio vidurio iki 10 dešimtmečio pabaigos. Darbo apimtis – 92 p. teksto be priedo, 57 iliustr., 9 schemos, 99 bibliografiniai šaltiniai, 3 priedai.
The goal of Master thesis is to investigate expression and features of postmodern style of private dwelling-houses of Lithuania, from the middle of the 9th decade to the 10th decade of the twentieth century. In order to reveal the characteristics, features and cultural significance of the style in Lithuania, the private dwelling-houses of postmodern style of the Western world (the U.S., Western Europe, Japan) are analyzed, as well as conditions which prompted their development. The paper discusses that the social, political and economic factors of Lithuania at that time, led to the suspicion and critical evaluation of postmodern architecture in general. It is assumed that due to the political-economical factors, the Western magazines were one of the main tools for Lithuanian architects to get to know postmodern architecture. Therefore, a comparative analysis between private dwelling-houses published in foreign periodicals, and of Lithuania, is conducted. Consequently the most common features of private dwelling-houses of postmodern style in Lithuania and their links with Western architecture are determined. Houses of Lithuania of high quality postmodern architecture are named, their valuable properties are defined. Thesis consists of: 92 p. text without extras, 57 pictures., 9 schemes, 99 bibliographical entries, 3 appendixes included.

Ants are reliable and relevant target organisms for environmental surveys. In our study, we focused on litter-dwelling ants through the use of two complementary sampling methods that were implemented according to the ants of leaf litter (all) protocol. In pristine forests of french guiana, leaf-litter ant communities are structured by environmental heterogeneity and natural perturbations - which influence species richness, diversity, abundance and density, as well as taxonomic and functional composition. This results in habitat-specific communities for each vegetal formation. Forest fragmentation and conversion into monocultures have led to a more or less deep alteration of the ant communities; this variability depends on the type of agricultural system and cultivated tree species. Although the intensity of community alteration peaked in tree monocultures, cocoa plantation exhibited a real potential for native species conservation. Finally, in the current context where simplifying the integration of arthropods into conservation programs as well as into surveys designed to monitor and manage the environment is critical, the use of neural networks appears to be a powerful tool for reliably highlighting and analyzing ant communities patterns

"Passage" presents a negotiation between the natural and the human-made realms and comments on the duality of perceptions and emotional responses associated with each. On the one hand, I aim to create a calm, quiet and peaceful environment offering a pleasant and meditative experience.  On the other hand, I offer the challenge of contemplation in a city-like space that evokes dense urban architecture in the process of decay. Both experiences draw on my personal histories of fact and fiction, reality and dream, hopefully resulting in evocative parallel experiences for those who encounter my exhibition space.

Inspiration for creation comes from accumulation of living. “Dwelling. Symbiosis.” starts by seeking the dwelling and destination for my own soul and goes on to understand the essence of the medium materials and co-exist with them in an attempt to weave, through creation, my life experience of various stages and my creative thinking. This paper comprises: Chapter 1, Introduction, relating the background and motives for the creation. Chapter 2 describes how to think about images and do analyses on modern sculpture and to absorb from it the nutrients for creation. Chapter 3, Ideal of creation, aiming to convert observation and imagination on the living environment by creation and focus on spatial exploration and thinking. Chapter 4, Methods and skills of creation, delineating the analyses and exploration in the materials, skills and textures in the course of creation delivery. Chapter 5, Analysis of the works, further contemplating and reading the context for the works. Chapter 6, Conclusion, describing my insight into and expectation about the creation. On my part, facing the creation truly, reducing to a simple and true manner, and listening to the voice inside myself by way of hands-on creation to take control of the power that drives one to explore and advance is my expectation regarding creation.

Cuthbertson, Hazel Claire. "Situating Nukain Mabuza's rock garden: a study of a landscape dwelling through multiple explanatory frameworks". Thesis, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/10539/23857.

Resumen
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts (History of Art) by coursework and research report March 2017
In the 1960s and 1970s, farm worker Nukain Mabuza created a painted hillside rock garden on a farm between Barberton and Kaapmuiden, Mpumalanga, South Africa. He transformed his dwellings, and rearranged and painted the surrounding rocks according to a unified scheme of geometric and animal motifs with a carefully selected colour palette. This altered environment went far further aesthetically, and lasted far longer in time, than the signs and scars that might typically result from a farm worker’s dwelling upon the land. His work arguably bears some of the hallmarks of an inhabited ‘total work of art’. I challenge the dominant ‘outsider art’ explanatory framework adopted by JFC Clarke and re-evaluate the fragmentary archive of Mabuza’s life and work. Working from the likelihood that no single context will offer sufficient grounds for situating Nukain Mabuza’s particular creative practice, I assess the relevance of cultural, historical and religious contexts, which might have shaped Nukain Mabuza’s personal vision and contributed to the form of his expressive environment. Nukain Mabuza’s altered landscape has suffered considerable damage – there is no longer any trace of the two dwellings and the stile, and the paintings on the rocks have all but disappeared. My project seeks to contribute to the scholarship on Nukain Mabuza’s work by extending, analysing, interpreting and situating his inhabited painted environment within the worldview of southern African Bantu-speakers, as a unique personal creative expression, and as an expression of the artist’s modernity.

As a way getting to know oneself, to me, creating each piece of work feels like regaining a piece of myself, sometimes it seen so unrecognisable like a piece of puzzle. By constant producing, gradually each piece of work integrated the "me" as myself. Once I was afraid of getting harmed in the relationships. I overreacted, for a while I disconnected from people and let the negative thoughts pile up. I trapped in the quicksand that formed in depression, the more I struggled to escape, the more I sunk down in it. When I felt detested toward my work of creation that I used to enjoy so much, I was in shock. Then I realised if I wanted to keep going forward, it was inevitable the confrontation to my demon: my-imperfect-self and the source of my deepest fear. I pinned down the causes of emotional negativity by recognising them in psychological theories and analysis. More than that, my works coherently recorded my transformation and re-identification. I came through those process to comprehend: the path to true happiness and the peace of mind is not to ignore and escape from one's own demon, but to be fearless and live in the moment. I often don't know how to vocalise my ideas, I choose to express through my works of creation by my bare hands. To creat, is the media of communication between me and the rest of the world. My work combines two series, "Daily Record" represents what I have observed and the emotional feedbacks in day to day life. And the "Inner Observation" recorded my internal progress within this period of creation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the physical, psychological, and social functions and their related factors of elderly living alone. A survey-interview with structured questionnaires was used for data collection. The elderly living alone were recruited from the Department of Social Affairs (DSA) at Kaohsiung city. Among 250 elders who were managed by the DSA, 100 agreed to participate in this study. In order to contrast the situations of the elderly living alone, 100 not living alone elders were recruited using a matching method by district, sex, and age. The questionnaires included the Demographic Inventory, Short-form Mental Status Questionnaire, Perceived Health Status Scale, Activity of Daily Living Scale (ADL), Depression Tendency Scale, and PRQ-85 Part 2. The validity and reliability of the questionnaires are satisfactory. The collected data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation, t- test, chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, Person''s product moment correlation, and multiple regression. The following results were achieved: (1) The elderly living alone had a middle level of perceived health status and perceived social support, and a higher level of independence in ADL and depression tendency. Approximately 47% of them had depression tendency. (2) A higher level of perceived health status was significantly associated with high school educational level, current employment, and the number of chronic health problems less than four. A higher level of ADL was significantly associated with current employment, social participation, mental status scores greater than eight, ages from 65 to 69 years old, and the number of chronic health problems less than four. A higher level of depression tendency was significantly associated with female, class 5 occupational category, level 5 socioeconomic status, mental status scores less than seven, and the number of chronic health problems more than five. A higher level of perceived social support was significantly associated with high school educational level, class 1 and 2 occupational categories, higher levels of socioeconomic status, social participation, mental status scores greater than eight, and the number of chronic health problems less than four. (3) The number of chronic health problems, perceived social support and current employment significant predictors of perceived health status, and they explained 41.8% of the total variance. (4) The number of chronic health problems, age and social participation were significant predictors of the ADL, and they explained 33.1% of the total variance. (5) The perceived social support and perceived health status were significant predictors of depression tendency, and they explained 47.5% of the total variance. (6) Mental status, educational level and social participation were significant predictors of perceived social support, and they explained 29.4% of the total variance. The results of this study provide information for understanding physical, psychological, and social functions of elderly living alone in communities. The data can be used to establish the database for teaching materials, investigation, guidelines for evaluation of the community health status of the elderly living alone. The findings can also provide the information for policy formulation of the elderly living alone.

Curved corridor , large camphor tree, round type of patio upward vertically and foggy Dulan Mountain are the space field characteristics found in Taitung Art Museum. The large camphor tree is a seducer, also the central life of Fantasy Land. Fantasy Land, which multiplies out from the tree is a “gathering field” protected by it. People can rest and meditate in the atmosphere and scenario brought by invisible motion and to feel the sky, sun, clouds, wind and rain, etc. ... Fantasy land grants nature which is in presence in the field or artificial disturbance factor of mobility a brand new “body movements”. With the change in the flow of body movements, imagination and perception in body and mind began to be triggered. By walking around and imagination, people reawaked the senses and the presence of the body’s deep memory, and agglomerated people’s abstract but concrete childhood memories, and at the same time to create new common memory with Fantasy land, further to respond to the natural environment surrounding the central square of grass, even the distant sacred mountain ─ Mt. Dulan. The author tried to use the open and enclosed spaces, the transition and looming of space, the edge of a breakthrough and extension, incubate an intimate living field coexisted with large camphor tree, mankind and surrounding natural environment, with an attempt to continue weaving people’s common fantasy. Everyone can be a dream creator.

Urban green area provides a living environment for some species which has lost their habitat by human activities. There are two hypotheses 1) ant abundance and species richness would be higher in high-complexed habitats. 2) based on size-grain hypothesis, smaller ants are likely to have an advantage over larger antin more complexed habitats. The study was conducted in two study sites which have obvious urban-rural interface in Taichung city. Totally 5254 ground dwelling ant individuals were collected with 41 morphospecies, by pitfall traps. The biodiversity index did not show continuous gradient variation between urban and forest and also found that the ant species interaction networks will show a consistent pattern of simplication along the urbanization gradient. However, some transects have obviously lower species richness and ant diversity than the others. This trend of inconsistence degree of species interaction appeared to be driven by the dominance of P. megacephala. Our result suggested that the increased proportion of P. megacephala will make other ant species decrease significantly in both Taiping and Tanzi. The large-sized and long-legged ant species with predatory characteristic prefer to live in the forest. In our research, compared with big-sized ants, small-sized ants have advantage of building their nests inside rock and wall crevices in urban area. This result did not support size-grain hypothesis. However, few small-sized cryptic ant species still can be found in the forest. In brief, our study proofed the habitat complexity through morphological traits and composition of ant species.

Resumen
The following report details research and analysis in order to assess the background market and market-based feasibility of the development of efficiency apartment units in the central Austin Area. It explores the potential and opportunities of reducing the size of apartments and promoting efficiency apartment unit development as a strategy to improve housing affordability for the Generation Y (Gen Y) population while taking advantage of urban redevelopment investments near Austin’s main TODs. The body of this study will discuss: (1) Generation Y and its impact on Austin’s housing market; (2) concepts and facts related to housing affordability; (3) strategies used by the city of Austin to promote infill development and existing transit oriented development sites; and (4) an overview of key housing development strategies and the real estate development process, including market analysis and absorption forecast under current housing market conditions. The study evaluates the implications of a significant demand for less expensive and smaller alternative housing products for a growing population group near downtown Austin. This report may contributes to the policy discussion about different approaches to housing affordability and offers an assessment guide for new housing development opportunities for a diverse range of city residents.

Baidya, Pronoy. "Ground-dwelling arthropods across human land use: Interpreting the spatial and temporal dimensions of beta diversity". Thesis, 2021. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/5676.

Texto completo
Resumen
This study investigates beta diversity and its partitions to quantify the influence of different processes that drive spatial and temporal variation in ground-dwelling arthropod assemblages. First, ant assemblages across Goa, India, were studied to quantify how different species and functional groups, and human land use contribute to beta diversity over large spatial scales, and whether exotic species have a disproportionate influence on beta diversity. Human land use strongly influenced diversity and distribution of ant assemblages. Human land use spared local species richness, but not functional groups. A small number of exotic species exerted negative influence even in a very speciose community. Second, intra-annual variation in beta diversity and its partitions of ant communities was studied across three seasons in Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa, India, to quantify how loss and gain of species leads to functional redundancy. Ant community composition was highly variable at seasonal scales. But ecological roles were maintained across seasons by species with redundant functional traits. Third, effect of human altered land use on temporal beta diversity and its partitions of ground dwelling arthropods was quantified in the coupled human-natural Trans-Himalayan ecosystem in Spiti, northern India. Human land use altered seasonal trajectories of community dynamics and influenced beta diversity at the taxonomic level. But functional roles were spared due to species replacement and redundancy in traits. Together, the three chapters of this thesis show that community composition rather than species richness is a better indicator of how arthropods respond to human land use. They also establish functional redundancy to be an important feature of ecological resilience and resistance that can be affected by human land use.

Resumen
Design is the meeting of the processes that one employs and the intentions that one brings. Exploring an inductive methodology situates the design environmentally. The inherent dynamic and constructive processes, which arise from the qualities of methodological inquiries, are the basis for the inhabitation within place. An inductive process began by exploring the role of aural perception prior to contextual and design intentions. This resulted in a strong emphasis on experience and presence. Research into analogous disciplines resulted in an exploration of methods that facilitate the inductive operations of media, particularly noise. The provision of a contextual framework for observations provided order to method. A strategy was posited, where the development of constructs that addressed the entire range of environmental dimensions, from site to structure, could supply integrity to the situation of contextual forces; their tension and release. Hence, a general theory for the constructive inhabitation of place.

The main subject of my thesis is concerning housing construction and it`s development influence upon the village Dolní Třebonín. This kind of housing construction was for village Dolní Třebonín of high importance. The village Dolní Třebonín is a small village with no more than 600 inhabitans. As a result of this small number of inhabitans a real apprehension occured {--} rescission of the local school, post ofiice, traffic and other improtant services. This could have substantial effect of the life quality in this village. To impove this dissatisfying situation was a suggested to build new housing possibilities and so increase the number of inhibitans in the village. The aim of this activity should be higher income for the willage{\crq}s budget and also to keep important services and to extend the platform of these services.
