Texto completoIn the past decades, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles have benefited from the miniaturization of electronic components, allowing for cheap and small drone designs, and allowing a rapid development of the civilian market. Unfortunately, due to their low cost, high availability and ease of use, these systems have become a tool of choice for malicious actors, and have become a force multiplier for such actors. In this context, radars can play a significant role in the effort to thwart an attack with one or several UAVs. However, UAVs usually fly at slow speed and close to the ground and have a low radar cross section, which makes them difficult to detect as radar systems may have troubles to differentiate them from the ground. This thesis aims at addressing this challenge with the use of polarization. In this thesis, we aim at improving endo-clutter detection of UAVs. We study the advantages of polarimetric detectors over mono-polarimetric detectors, proposing a method to compare the detectors and choosing the best performing one according to clutter's properties. In order to do so, we first analyse the spatio-temporal properties of polarimetric ground clutter thanks to a measurement campaign in semi-urban environment. This campaign outlines important properties of the clutter such as: the non-reciprocity of polarimetric clutter for quasi-monostatic radar with separated transmit and receive antennas, the existence of an optimal Doppler integration time and the instability of the clutter polarimetric signature with time. We propose to model the temporal evolution of the clutter using both the distribution of the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix and a measure of the mismatch angle between covariance matrices. Then, we implement a benchmark of polarimetric and mono-polarimetric detectors to assess the performances of endo-clutter detection under spatio-temporal varying clutters. We compare the robustness of the polarimetric detectors to choose the best performing detector for a given clutter:- First, we study the influence of the effective rank of the clutter - controlled by the Doppler integration time - on the performances of detectors and confirm that it is useful to minimize the effective rank of the covariance matrix to improve the detection performances.- Then, we analyse the influence of the mismatch angle on the performances of the detectors using simulated clutter in order to select the best detector, for a given time varying clutter. It turns out that endo-clutter detectors based on clutter filtering depend on the time delay between clutter estimation and detection test, while other detectors are time independent. Furthermore, this study shows the sensitivity of the detector performances to the eigenvalue distribution of the clutter.- Finally, we show a clear improvement with polarimetric detectors over single polarization detectors for endo-clutter detection of UAVs in a low grazing geometry. From these results, we conclude that multi-polarimetric detectors enable better performances for endo-clutter UAV detections. In addition we present a metric to optimize the effective-rank of the clutter with by adjusting Doppler integration time to increase the detection performances. Then, we determine that the shorter the time interval is between the clutter estimation and the detection test, the higher performances are. These results give a clear plan for polarimetric detections of endo-clutter UAVs, minimizing effective rank and the time interval between estimation and detection. We conclude that simulation methods described in this thesis could be used in a radar system to adaptively estimate the best polarimetric detector for a given clutter cell and target

Texto completoThe development of drones and their increasing affordability pose a threat, especially to critical sites and major public events. Sky surveillance is crucial to ensure that drones do not enter sensitive areas or target crowds, potentially carrying explosives. Traditional surveillance techniques, based on visual, thermal, or radar detection, have limitations in urban settings due to obstacles like buildings, the small size of drones, and weather variations. In this light, passive radiofrequency (RF) monitoring emerges as a promising solution. Most commercially available UAVs utilize RF communications with various standardized and proprietary protocols. This thesis delves into the design of methods to detect, identify, and locate drones by analyzing their RF communications. By examining specific signals emitted by different drones, this research develops techniques that merge signal processing with artificial intelligence to identify these protocols. Key challenges addressed in this work include interference from nearby devices and the physical behavior of signals, such as fading and multipath effects. The primary goal of this research is to devise an advanced jamming system to safeguard high-risk zones, such as airports or public gathering sites. This system will work in tandem with a jamming device to neutralize drones, especially in urban areas. To prevent interference with other communication devices or property damage, the jamming strategy is tailored based on the detected drone protocol, ensuring accurate and targeted intervention

Texto completoWildfires, also known as forest or wildland fires, are uncontrolled vegetation fires occurring in rural areas that cause tremendous damage to the society, harming environment, property and people. The firefighting endeavor is a dull, dirty and dangerous job and as such, can greatly benefit from automation to reduce human exposure to hazards. Aerial remote sensing is a common technique to obtain precise information about a wildfire state so fire response teams can prepare countermeasures. This task, when performed with manned aerial vehicles, expose operators to high risks that can be eliminated by the use of autonomous vehicles. This thesis introduces a wildfire monitoring system based on fleets of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to provide firefighters with timely updated information about a wildland fire. We present an approach to plan trajectories for a fleet of fixed-wing UAVs to observe a wildfire evolving over time. Realistic models of the terrain, of the fire propagation process, and of the UAVs are exploited, together with a model of the wind, to predict wildfire spread and plan UAV motion. The approach tailors a generic Variable Neighborhood Search method to these models and the associated constraints. The execution of the planned monitoring mission provides wildfire maps that are transmitted to the fire response team and exploited by the planning algorithm to plan new observation trajectories. Algorithms and models are integrated within a software architecture allowing for execution under scenarios with different levels of realism, with real and simulated UAVs flying over a real or synthetic wildfire. Mixed-reality simulation results show the ability to plan observation trajectories for a small fleet of UAVs, and to update the plans when new information on the fire are incorporated in the fire model

Texto completoDrylands share with deserts many environmental conditions that make them sensitive and fragile. It is a necessity to understand the mechanisms of these environments, especially in contexts where there is a risk of desertification. Such an understanding is often assessed by monitoring vegetation. Field experience, however, shows that aeolian morphodynamics may provide useful additional information. The aeolian morphodynamics plays indeed a significant role in the environmental risk of drylands. In desert systems, the anthropogenic pressure on aeolian processes is low. On the other hand, in non-desert drylands, features are smaller but have a faster reaction time to environmental change. They interact strongly with other components of the landscape, such as human activities. Accordingly, the study of non-desertic aeolian morphodynamics has to be designed following a systematic approach. It relies on a good knowledge of fundamental physics of wind geomorphology that is described in this dissertation. Various tools and concepts developed in desert environments, including potential displacement and roughness density, are given. The effects of aeolian morphodynamics on landscapes are illustrated by various examples. Standard studies of wind dynamics are discussed and questioned to demonstrate that new approaches can be explored. This study focuses anchored dunes, which remain poorly studied despite their importance in drylands. Anchored dunes are described and characterized in detail. Then a protocole of quantification and qualitative evaluation can be elaborated. Our aim was to develop methods that are reproducible and minimize the complexity and costs of implementation. The unmanned platform, Pixy, illustrates the potential of drones which provide accurate images with a great flexibility of use. The interest of very high spatial resolution imagery provided by satellites such as QuickBird is also demonstrated. Their images introduce to an intermediate scale between field and large-scale satellite imagery. Among the providers of very high spatial resolution imagery, Google Earth (GE) appears to be a good alternative to commercial suppliers. Increasing availability of free high resolution images offers potential applications in various fields. However, their use has constraints that are managed by Mathematical Morphology (MM), an object-oriented image analysis discipline. Tools from MM allow the analysis of uncorrected images, like those of Pixy or GE. It relies on simple procedures easy to reproduce and explain. It thus contributes to reducing the cost of studies. This economic issue of environmental diagnosis cannot be ignored, especially in the countries concerned by the fight against desertification. Each chapter of this thesis demonstrates the importance of two thresholds through particular example. The threshold of heterogeneity, below which information is embedded in the background noise produced by too much detail, is the first one. The threshold of homogeneity, beyond which information is too smooth to be relevant, is the second one. This work attempts to show how these thresholds may have direct effects on results of a remote sensing study. This consideration is thus a structuring element of the methods used. Beyond the issue of aeolian morphodynamics, this thesis combines semi-automatic characterization methods of landscape elements with processes of multi-scalar integration. The results are potentially useful to any approach that seeks to understand the effects of a phenomenon at different scales

Texto completoRivers are the object of legislation encouraging their restoration, and dam removal operations represent one of the solution to achieve it in France. Riparian vegetation plays a fundamental role in stabilizing and maintaining fluvial systems, being at the interface between terrestrial and aquatic environments. It is therefore a very important component which has to be evaluated in river restoration operations. One of the consequences of dam removal on riparian vegetation is the colonization of the dewatered sediments in the reservoir. The objective of the thesis are to define short term colonization dynamics of vegetation in context of dam removal (Sélune River, Normandy), and to develop long term indicators for the monitoring of riparian vegetation. First, an analysis of intra and interannual colonization dynamics revealed the potential of using drone images to map riparian vegetation, and fast successional dynamics with high passive restoration and sediment stabilization potential. Secondly, the analysis of 3D point clouds extracted from LiDAR data acquired in winter and summer highlighted the complementarity of the two acquisition dates to map indicators of riparian status at large scale, such as main riparian species, shading or density of herbaceous and shrubby strata. These results make it possible to discuss the methodological and operational dimensions of the use of remote sensing approaches for the monitoring of riparian vegetation
