Rachel, Murray. The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198810582.001.0001.

Resumen
The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is the principle regional human rights treaty for the African continent. Adopted in 1981, there is now a significant body of jurisprudence and interpretation by its African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the recently established African Court. This volume provides a comprehensive article-by-article legal analysis of the provisions of the Charter as it draws upon the documents adopted by the African Commission, including resolutions, case law, and concluding observations. Where relevant, case law adopted by the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and that of other sub-regional courts and tribunals and domestic courts in Africa, are also incorporated. The book examines not only the substantive rights in the African Charter but also the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and provides a full examination of its mandate. A critical analysis of each of the provisions of the ACHPR is led principally by the jurisprudence and documentation of the African Commission and African Court. The text also identifies the overall development of the ACHPR within the broader regional and international human rights legal arena.

Standardized, evidence-based post-operative policies and procedures ensure that safe and effective person-centred care is provided, which is aimed at reducing the likelihood of post-operative complications. Close physiological monitoring is imperative and should incorporate the use of an early warning score such as the National Early Warning Score (NEWS). This ensures early recognition and response to patient deterioration, which is quickly escalated to an appropriate member of the health-care team. This chapter provides an overview of oxygen therapy, wound drains, the removal of sutures and staples, post-operative monitoring, early warning scores, escalation, documentation standards, and breaking bad news.

Resumen
In the second half of the 19th century, European interest in research in western Asia increasingly expanded to the areas inhabited by the Kurds. From the modern perspective, these studies contributed not only to the study of still little-known regions, but also to the introduction of Kurdish Studies. Initially the focus of the research was almost entirely dictated by British, Russian and French colonial interests, which have been subjected to a critical reappraisal over the last three decades in accordance with post-colonial approaches and their importance redefined. It is for precisely this reason that those study trips which did not have a colonial background or did not pursue economic or power-political interests are particularly valuable. And that is also why nowadays autonomous and independently organised research, like that undertaken by Josef Wünsch (1842–1907), who worked in Prague and Vienna, can be seen as pioneering. Wünsch pursued universal research interests and produced both ethnographic and cartographic documentation. He drew up detailed cartographic material for the “Kurdish regions” and created a museum collection of everyday items. The results of his research on Mesopotamia were published in journals in Vienna and Prague, but he never produced a complete overview of his two years of research. Nowadays Wünsch's legacy is divided between various Austrian and Czech institutions. By bringing together the various partial legacies, in this collective volume all published and unpublished results of Josef Wünsch’s research will be edited, reports in Czech incorporated through commentated translations and then a critical re-evaluation undertaken. All of this will be preceded by an introductory chapter on Austrian contributions to the development of Kurdish Studies from the late 19th century on.

Resumen
This chapter documents the ʻAlawis' ambivalent relationship with the Syrian Arab, Ottoman/Turkish, and French colonial projects at the threshold of the contemporary era. The first section considers the educational policies of the Abdülhamid regime toward the ʻAlawis, which generated what was probably the most extensive documentation ever in their regard. The second and third sections analyze ongoing control and development measures in the region under both Abdülhamid and the CUP government (1908–14), and show how the ʻAlawis capitalized on the opportunities provided by modern schooling and increasing contact with the outside world to promote a distinctly local, ʻAlawi “reformism.” The final section discusses the contrast between France's separatist, confessionalist policies and Turkey's resolve to incorporate and assimilate the ʻAlawis of Cilicia and the Alexandretta (Hatay) district.

Boudreau, J. Donald, Eric J. Cassell y Abraham Fuks. The Clinical Method and Subjectivity in Medicine. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199370818.003.0007.

Texto completo
Resumen
The clinical method is defined as the means by which doctors gather information about their patients, think about and evaluate these medical facts, and enter the facts into their process of care. Its key components are the medical history, including the process by which it is acquired from patients and its subsequent documentation in the medical record, as well as the physical examination. Characteristics, such as the reproducibility and accuracy of various components, are discussed with a reference to prevailing opinions of subjectivity and objectivity in medicine. It is argued that as a consequence of a shift in the prevalence of illness, from acute to chronic conditions, a misalignment exists between the clinical method currently taught and contemporary medicine. It is suggested that a renewed and repurposed clinical method must incorporate enhanced strategies for functional assessments.

Resumen
Museums collect and care for material culture, and, increasingly, intangible culture. This relatively new term for the folklore, music, dance, traditional practices, and language belonging to a group of people is gaining importance in international heritage management discourse. As one aspect of intangible cultural heritage, language is more relevant in museums than has been previously acknowledged. Incorporating native languages into museum anthropology collections provides context and acts as a form of “appropriate museology,” preserving indigenous descriptions and conceptions of objects. This report presents the ways in which Hopi katsina tithu—popularly known as kachina dolls—are outstanding examples of objects that museums can recontextualize with Native terminology. The etymology, or a word or phrase’s use history, of each katsina tihu’s name documents the deep connection of these objects with Hopi belief, ritual, and history. Without including the complex practices of Hopi naming, documentation of these objects in museum catalogues is often incomplete and inaccurate. Using contemporary Hopi perspectives, historic ethnographies, and the Hopi Dictionary to create adatabase of Hopi katsina tithu names, this project demonstrates how museums might incorporate intangible heritage into their collections through language and etymological context.

Augé, C. Riley. The Archaeology of Magic. University Press of Florida, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5744/florida/9780813066110.001.0001.

Texto completo
Resumen
In The Archaeology of Magic, C. Riley Augé explores how early American colonists used magic to protect themselves from harm in their unfamiliar and challenging new world. Analyzing evidence from the different domestic spheres of women and men within Puritan society, Augé provides a trailblazing archaeological study of magical practice and its relationship to gender in the Anglo-American culture of colonial New England. Investigating homestead sites dating from 1620 to 1725 in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine, Augé explains how to recognize objects and architectural details that colonists intended as defenses and boundaries against evil supernatural forces. She supports this archaeological work by examining references to magic in letters, diaries, sermons, medical texts, and documentation of court proceedings including the Salem witch trials. She also draws on folklore from the era to reveal that colonists simultaneously practiced magic and maintained their Puritan convictions. Augé exposes the fears and anxieties that motivated individuals to try to manipulate the supernatural realm, and she identifies gendered patterns in the ways they employed magic. She argues that it is essential for archaeologists to incorporate historical records and oral traditions in order to accurately interpret the worldviews and material culture of people who lived in the past.
