Resumen
Disordered multiferroic materials (type-III multiferroics) escape the conventional schematics oftype-Iandtype-IImultiferroics, where two types of ferroic long-range order are expected to coexist under different interdependences and promise to attain a maximized bilinear (αorEH)magnetoelectriceffect under special symmetry conditions. Nevertheless sizable higher orderMEresponse occurs also in disordered systems such as in the simultaneousdipolarandspin glasses(multiglass) Sr0.98Mn0.02TiO3and K0.94Mn0.03TaO3, thequantum paraelectric antiferromagnetEuTiO3, thespin glassandrelaxor ferroelectricPbFe0.5Nb0.5O3, and theantiferroelectric antiferromagnetic dipole glassCuCr1-xInxP2S6. They have in common to show large quadratic magneto-capacitance effects, ΔεH2, which are related to dominating third-orderE2H2terms in their free energies and do not require special symmetry conditions. The polarization controlled exchange coupling can achieve giant fluctuation-enhanced values in the vicinity of critical magnetic fields as observed,e.g., in EuTiO3. Exceptionally, even the first-orderEH-typemagnetoelectriceffect is observed whenever metastable homogeneous order parameters are induced by field cooling as in EuTiO3, or in the spin glass phase of the relaxor multiferroic Pb (Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3atT < Tg= 10.6 K.

Resumen
Bock’s nominal response model (NRM) is sometimes used to identify the empirical order of response categories in polytomous items but its application tags many items as having disordered categories. Disorderly estimated categories may not reflect a true characteristic of the items but, rather, a numerically best-fitting solution possibly equivalent to other solutions with orderly estimated categories. To investigate this possibility, an order-constrained variant of the NRM was developed that enforces the preassumed order of categories on parameter estimates, for a comparison of its outcomes with those of the original unconstrained NRM. For items with ordered categories, order-constrained and unconstrained solutions should account for the data equally well even if the latter solution estimated disordered categories for some items; for items with truly disordered categories, the unconstrained solution should outperform the order-constrained solution. Criteria for this comparative analysis are defined and their utility is tested in several simulation studies with items of diverse characteristics, including ordered and disordered categories. The results demonstrate that a comparison of order-constrained and unconstrained calibrations on such criteria provides the evidence needed to determine whether category disorder estimated on some items by the original unconstrained form of the NRM is authentic or spurious. Applications of this method to assess category order in existing data sets are presented and practical implications are discussed.

Resumen
Science often advances through the introdction of new ideas which simplify the understanding of complex problems. Materials science is no exception to this rule. Concepts such as nucleation in crystal growth and spinodal decomposition, for example, have played essential roles in the modern understanding of the structure of materials. More recently, fractal geometry has emerged as an essential idea for understanding the kinetic growth of disordered materials. This review will introduce the concept of fractal geometry and demonstrate its application to the understanding of the structure of materials.Fractal geometry is a natural concept used to describe random or disordered objects ranging from branched polymers to the earth's surface. Disordered materials seldom display translational or rotational symmetry so conventional crystallographic classification is of no value. These materials, however, often display “dilation symmetry,” which means they look geometrically self-similar under transformation of scale such as changing the magnification of a microscope. Surprisingly, most kinetic growth processes produce objects with self-similar fractal properties. It is now becoming clear that the origin of dilation symmetry is found in disorderly kinetic growth processes present in the formation of these materials.

Mikata, Y. "SH-Waves in a Medium Containing a Disordered Periodic Array of Cracks". Journal of Applied Mechanics 62, n.º 2 (1 de junio de 1995): 312–19. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/1.2895933.

Texto completo
Resumen
Reflection and transmission of an SH-wave by a disordered periodic array of coplanar cracks is investigated, and subsequently its application to the dispersion and attenuation of an SH-wave in a disorderedly cracked medium is also treated. This is a stochastic boundary value problem. The formulation largely follows Mikata and Achenbach (1988b). The problem is formulated for an averaged scattered field, and the governing singular integral equation is derived for a conditionally averaged crack-opening displacement using a quasi-crystalline-like approximation. Unlike our previous study (Mikata and Achenbach, 1988b) where a point scatterer approximation was used for the regular part of the integral kernel, however, no further approximation is introduced. The singular integral equation is solved by an eigenfunction expansion involving Chebyschev polynomials. Numerical results are presented for the averaged reflection and transmission coefficients of zeroth order as a function of the wave number for normal incidence, a completely disordered crack spacing, and various values of the ratio of crack length and average crack spacing. Numerical results are also presented for the dispersion and attenuation of an SH-wave in a disorderedly cracked medium.

Resumen
We present the numerical modeling of two different randomization methods of photonic lattices. We compare the results of light propagation in disordered aperiodic and disordered periodic lattices. In disordered aperiodic lattice disorder always enhances light transport for both methods, contrary to the disordered periodic lattice. For the highest disorder levels, we detect Anderson localization for both methods and both disordered lattices. More pronounced localization is observed for disordered aperiodic lattice.

Resumen
We study the effect of disorder on the properties of the Quantum Hall smectic state arising in two dimciisional electron systems in high Landau levels. We use the replica trick and the Gauzsian Variational method to treat the disorder. We find that the quantum smectics are rather different from the usual classical smectics in that the density correlations along the direction of the stripes manifest a Bragg-Glass type behaviour whereas those in the transverse direction are infra-red divergent. This results in an amsotropic behaviour of all physical quantities. We calculate the dynamical conductivity $\sigma _{xx} ({\bf q}, \omega )$ along the stripe direction and find a $\bf q$ dependent pinning peak.
