Resumen
Musculoskeletal injuries and chronic degenerative diseases commonly affect both athletic and sedentary horses and can entail the end of their athletic careers. The ensuing repair processes frequently do not yield fully functional regeneration of the injured tissues but biomechanically inferior scar or replacement tissue, causing high reinjury rates, degenerative disease progression and chronic morbidity. Regenerative medicine is an emerging, rapidly evolving branch of translational medicine that aims to replace or regenerate cells, tissues, or organs to restore or establish normal function. It includes tissue engineering but also cell-based and cell-free stimulation of endogenous self-repair mechanisms. Some regenerative medicine therapies have made their way into equine clinical practice mainly to treat tendon injures, tendinopathies, cartilage injuries and degenerative joint disorders with promising results. However, the qualitative and quantitative spatiotemporal requirements for specific bioactive factors to trigger tissue regeneration in the injury response are still unknown, and consequently, therapeutic approaches and treatment results are diverse. To exploit the full potential of this burgeoning field of medicine, further research will be required and is ongoing. This review summarises the current knowledge of commonly used regenerative medicine treatments in equine patients and critically discusses their use.

Resumen
The construction industry is the most dangerous industry in the word with higher prevalence of occupational accidents, injuries and diseases. There is a paucity of studies that investigate occupational accidents, injuries and diseases in the Namibian construction industry. The study was conducted to determine the magnitude of occupational accidents, injuries and diseases in the construction industry of Windhoek, Namibia. A quantitative, retrospective document review was conducted to investigate the documents for reported occupational accidents, injuries and diseases for the period of five years, from April 2011 to March 2016. Data was analysed with SPSS version 23.The study found out that occupational accidents and injuries are prevalent in the Windhoek construction industry. The study recorded the total of 37 cases of occupational accidents and injuries. Young, male construction workers are mostly sustained accidents and injuries. Labourers were mostly affected than other occupations while cut by machinery comprise the majority of the source of accidents. The most body part injured is the general body. The researchers did not find any documentation for reported occupational diseases from the construction industry of Windhoek. The researchers recommended the preventive measures to be implemented to prevent occupational accidents and injuries and enforcement of legislations on occupational accidents, injuries and diseases recording and reporting.

Resumen
This article provides a general analysis of occupational diseases and injuries in swimming athletes. High performance sports are a risk factor for injuries and occupational diseases. Different types of sports are characterized by different specific diseases. Despite the fact that swimming is recognized as a less traumatic sport and has a direction in medical prevention, this does not mean that athletes who practice this sport do not get injured. Research methods: analysis of scientific and methodical literature; Internet resources on the specified topic. Research results: mainly the following traumatic zones are distinguished in swimmers: muscular system, joint connections and surfaces, and disorders of the ENT organs. The issue of preventing injuries and diseases in swimming concerns everyone who prepares highly qualified athletes and provides normal conditions for training and participation in competitions: coaches, doctors, judges, representatives of sports and medical science. Conclusion: 1. Prevention of sports injuries is not a purely medical problem. It applies to all those who are called to prepare highly qualified athletes and provide them with normal conditions for training and participation in competitions; 2. Prevention of sports injuries is based on the principles of injury prevention, taking into account the peculiarities of such a sport as swimming; 3. Using the experience of the economically developed countries of the world, it is possible to propose a single algorithm for processing information on statistical data on injuries to athletes- swimmers. The results of this work should be used in the future for coordinated work between the athlete, coach, doctor, physiotherapist and the whole team that provides a sports event to reduce injuries in swimming.

Disturbances of the distal radioulnar joint (DDRJ) have recently received more attention in the literature, and they have been diagnosed more frequently and treated better. As early as 1814. A. Colles wrote: "If the surgeon takes the trouble to carefully examine the injured hand, he will find that the end of the ulna is easily displaced forward and backward". However, the diagnosis of DDRJ injuries continues to be difficult and is often delayed due to manifest collateral injuries to the radius and wrist, and the fact that radiological changes, even in cases of significant DDRJ injuries, are often minimal.

Resumen
Unintentional injuries are among the leading causes of death and disability in older adults. Although older adults account for approximately 12% of the US population, in 2008, they accounted for 15% of all traffic fatalities, 14% of all vehicle occupant fatalities, and 18% of all pedestrian fatalities. Severely injured older adults have far worse outcomes than younger adults. Despite this difference, many survive with aggressive resuscitation and goal-directed therapy. This article describes the impact of life-threatening injuries in the older adult population, specifically injuries sustained in motor vehicle collisions, and how these injuries relate to anatomic and physiologic changes of aging, the metabolic response to injury, the role of preexisting diseases and medications taken to treat these diseases, and complications.

Resumen
Introduction. Eye injuries represent a significant problem in children. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence and causes of the eye injury and to propose measures of the eye injury prevention in children up to 15 years of age. Methods. This was a retrospective study of 552 children with the eye injuries treated at the Clinic of Eye Diseases in Belgrade during the period March 1999 to February 2010. Gender and age of the children, time of injury, the type and site of injuries, visual acuity upon admission and at discharge, as well as the time of surgery in relation to time of injury were analyzed. Results. The ratio between the injured boys and girls was 3.6:1. The highest percentage of injured children was in the group 6-10 years old (39.7%); the injuries were almost evenly distributed according to months during the year and days during the week. The percentages of severe closed and open injuries of the eyeball were almost equal. Visual acuity upon discharge and subsequent follow-up examinations were significantly improved after the applied treatment in comparison with the visual acuity upon admission. Conclusion. Eye injuries in children still represent a severe health problem. Regarding the youngest age group of children, adults are mainly responsible for these injuries due to their lack of attention, while in older children these injuries are the result of the production and distribution of inappropriate toys and a failure to implement the legal traffic regulations applicable to children. The prevention of eye injuries is essential.

Resumen
On the eve of the World Swimming Championship in 2015, which will be held in Russia, a review of literature analyzing injuries and diseases in top professional watersports athletes that may be acquired at competitions is presented. Modern professional sport is characterized by an intense training process, is highly competitive on the international level. Setting each new sports record becomes more and more complex. Top professional sport is associated with risk of injury, and the proper organization of biomedical support of training and competitive process is the key to reducing the incidence of injuries in sports. Literature review allowed making the following conclusions. Firstly, insufficient attention was paid to the registration of injuries in specific sports and their classification if occurred not only during competitions, but also during the training period. Secondly, during competitions the number of injuries increases in all watersports except synchronized swimming. Thirdly, the most traumatic sport is water polo, where most injuries occur during competitive activities. Fourthly, Watersports World Championships are associated with increased risk for diseases, although already implemented preventive measures reduced the incidence of infectious diseases of the upper respiratory tract. Fifthly, there is a need for further thorough study of the injuries and diseases frequencies to create preventive and rehabilitation measures in athletes involved in water sports. Thus, injuries and diseases are a significant risk for the health of athletes involved in water sports. All medical professionals involved in providing medical aid at the sporting competitions should know the specific features of injuries and diseases common for the certain sporting competitions, and develop the preventive measures.

Resumen
According to the current legislation in the Labour Code the employer’s liability for personal injury resulting from industrial injury or disease is objective, i.e. liability for result. Employer has always an obligation to pay damages if the employer has not liberated himself from no-fault liability. In terms which are explicitly defined by the Labour Code the employer can relieved from fully liability or in part. The injured party is entitled to compensation for loss of earnings and compensation for pain and diminished social capability, and compensation for reasonably incurred expenses related to medical treatment and compensation for damage. Additional compensation is provided in the case of an employee’s death which occurred due to an industrial injury or occupational disease. This may be compensation for reasonable funeral expenses, reimbursement for dependent survivors, one- off compensation for dependents and damage compensation. Each employer now has to pay compulsory insurance against injury. The new law on accident insurance of employees makes the principle of compensation redundant and establishes the principle of insurance. Employers will pay premiums to the Czech Social Security Administration, who will pay allowances from the accident insurance directly to the injured employees. The aim of the new law on accident insurance of employees is to motivate employees to return to work and curb abuse of the insurance. The law should come into effect on 1st January 2013.

Resumen
The level of occupational injuries and occupational diseases in extractive mining industries of the far north of Russia is associated both with difficult arduous working conditions and also with climatic conditions unfriendly to humans. The paper presents the results of a correlation analysis of data on occupational injuries and occupational diseases occupational in the Russian Federation, the Murmansk region and the Republic of Komi. The values of the background risk of injuries and occupational diseases in each of the considered areas are calculated. The linear dependences of the background risk of injuries and occupational diseases from severe climatic conditions are established. On the basis of the study, the specific weight of the background risk was identified at the general risk of injuries and occupational diseases for the areas under consideration. The necessity of using background risk in assessing the risk of injuries and the risk of occupational diseases in the Far North of Russia is substantiated.

Abstract This descriptive study was conducted on a group of 92 patients during January 2012 - December 2012, treated at the Sports Rehabilitation Department of NOVA VITA Medical Center, Tîrgu Mures. We investigated the incidence of muscle and joint injuries by age group, gender, region of the injured muscle and joint, type of sport. Football is the main sport practiced at a professional level, thus the leg is the most exposed body part to diseases at different levels and degrees, especially the ankle, knee and thigh with muscle damage and ligament injuries. Playing tennis at an amateur level can harm body parts like the shoulder and the elbow and can cause tendon and muscle injuries. The most affected region is the knee. Knee injuries are present in almost all sports. Nearly 40% of the injuries are ligament injuries.

Resumen
Purpose. Substantiate the need for development of new scientific and methodological foundations for forecasting occupational injuries and illnesses. Methodology. Analyze existing methods of occupational injuries and illnesses forecasting, propose a new algorithm for calculation of their levels, set scientific and methodological requirements to information analysis system used for the prevention of occupational illnesses. Findings. Modern methods of forecasting injuries make it possible to assess the effectiveness of preventive measures. However, there is no universal method for analyzing the occupational morbidity due to the different specifics of disease causes and manifestations which do not allow to conduct a realistic assessment of labor protection in a particular area over a given period of time. Therefore, it is the reduction in the level of occupational injuries and illnesses compared to the data obtained by the forecasting method that may be indicative of preventive measures effectiveness. At the same time, development of information analysis system of personal protective equipment continues to be a pressing issue (PPE). Originality. It has been proposed to develop a special mathematical tool for determining loss reduction and information analysis system, which will provide a forecasted estimate of occupational morbidity at an enterprise. To obtain a reliable forecast it is important to identify the average value of cases over a given period of time, which has been considered in this paper. Conclusions and Practical Significance. There are numerous methods available for analysis of occupational injuries and illnesses. Most of them, however, are unfit for the assessment of occupational diseases. Since chronic occupational illnesses have a cumulative nature, the rate of work-related diseases is more predictable than that of injuries and accidents. This makes it possible to determine the “occupational morbidity rate” provided that the time spent by workers in the area of exposure to occupational hazards is recorded together with reference data on the conditional level of exposure to each hazard. Keywords: forecasting, injuries, occupational morbidity, occupational safety activities, hazard, information analysis system.

Resumen
Purpose: The present study used a hierarchical generalized linear model to explore the effects of physical and mental health and occupational categories on occupational injuries and diseases. Methods: The data were obtained from the Registry for Beneficiaries of the 2002–2013 National Health Insurance Research Database. The benefit categories involved adults with occupational injuries and diseases. Six major occupational categories and 28 subcategories were used. The main analysis methods were binary logistic regression (BLR) and hierarchical generalized linear model (HGLM). Results: After adjustment for relevant factors, the three major occupation subcategories most likely to develop occupational injuries and diseases were Subcategory 12 “employees with fixed employers” of Category 1 “civil servants, employees in public or private schools, laborers, and self-employed workers”; Subcategory 2 “employees in private organizations” of Category 1; and “sangha and religionists” of Category 6 “other citizens.” Conditions such as mental disorders and obesity increased the risk of occupational injuries and diseases. Conclusion: A portion of the occupational categories had a higher risk of occupational injuries and diseases. Physical and mental health issues were significantly correlated with occupational injuries and diseases. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to use HGLM to analyze differences in occupational categories in Taiwan.

Resumen
In this paper, the author addresses the issue of workplace injuries and occupational diseases. By examining local and international legislation, the author aims to highlight the significance of legal instruments in combating and preventing these issues. Considering the significant disparity between the regulatory framework of the Republic of Serbia and real-world practices, the author believes that certain legislative solutions are inadequate. Therefore, the starting assumption is that the existing legal provisions encourage people to avoid reporting work-related injuries and illnesses. In the paper, the author carried out empirical research using survey methods and in-depth interviews to gather data on the frequency of workplace injuries and whether they are reported and recorded in a timely manner, as well as the reasons behind any delays in doing so. The research findings suggest that in practice, workplace injuries and occupational diseases are becoming increasingly common, yet only a small portion is formally reported and documented. Moreover, the research results indicate that the reluctance to report workplace injuries is largely influenced by the fact that the current legislation places the entire financial burden of workplace injuries and occupational illnesses on employers.

Resumen
Tissue repair and regeneration in the central nervous system (CNS) remains a serious medical problem. CNS diseases such as traumatic and neurological brain injuries have a high mortality and disability rate, thereby bringing a considerable amount of economic burden to society and families. How to treat traumatic and neurological brain injuries has always been a serious issue faced by neurosurgeons. The global incidence of traumatic and neurological brain injuries has gradually increased and become a global challenge. Thymosin β4 (Tβ4) is the main G-actin variant molecule in eukaryotic cells. During the development of the CNS, Tβ4 regulates neurogenesis, tangential expansion, tissue growth, and cerebral hemisphere folding. In addition, Tβ4 has anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory properties. It promotes angiogenesis, wound healing, stem/progenitor cell differentiation, and other characteristics of cell migration and survival, providing a scientific basis for the repair and regeneration of injured nerve tissue. This review provides evidence to support the role of Tβ4 in the protection and repair of nervous tissue in CNS diseases, especially with the potential to control brain inflammatory processes, and thus open up new therapeutic applications for a series of neurodegenerative diseases.

Resumen
In this study, the incidence of football injuries and complaints as related to different age groups and skill levels was studied over the period of 1 year. All injuries and complaints as well as the amount of time players spent in training and games were recorded. All injured players were examined weekly by physicians, and all injuries were assessed according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), which describes them in terms of injury type and location, the treatment required, and the duration of subsequent performance limitations. A total of 264 players of different age groups and skill levels was observed for 1 year. Five hundred fifty-eight injuries were documented. Two hundred sixteen players had one or more injuries. Only 48 players (18%) had no injury. The average number of injuries per player per year was 2.1. Injuries were classified as mild (52%), moderate (33%), or severe (15%). Almost 50% of all injuries were contact injuries; half of all the contact injuries were associated with foul play. The majority of injuries were strains and sprains involving the ankle, knee, and lumbar spine. Nearly all players (91%) suffered from complaints related to football. Only 23 players reported no injuries and no complaints. Prevention programs, fair play, and continuing education in techniques and skills may reduce the incidence of injuries over time.

Resumen
AbstractObjectives:To investigate reported needlestick injuries in hospital workers from an adult learner theory perspective: identifying safe needle device knowledge and practice, and flaws in needle designs and management practices surrounding such problems.Design:Exploratory descriptive study of reported needlestick injuries from hollow needled devices in a hospital. Injured healthcare workers were counseled via hospital protocol, then a survey was filled out containing no identifiers of individual or institution.Setting:Seventeen Metropolitan Washington, DC, area hospitals.Participants:All workers reporting needlestick injuries during February 1-28, 1990.Results:Seventy-two injuries were reported; there were no multiple injuries to any individual. Thirty-three (45.8%) were to registered nurses (RNs)-more than any other group of workers. Recapping accounted for a higher percentage than any other activity (10 sticks, 14.1%). Of workers incurring recapping injuries, 3 identified a knowledge of a one-handed spearing technique and did not practice it; 4 neither knew nor practiced it. Eighteen (25.0%) were to “down-stream” housekeepers and aides who did not use such devices in their practice. Disposable needle/syringes caused 49.3% of injuries; hypodermic needles on intravenous lines caused 16.9%. Of the needlesticks, 60.6% were after use and before disposal, 4.2% occurred as the worker was putting an item into a needlebox, and 9.9% occurred from needles protruding from inappropriate bags. Many injuries occurred in the first 2 hours of work after being off the previous day, on Sunday, and on MondayConclusions:Of nurses and medical technologists reporting knowledge of a spearing recapping technique, 97.3% suffered injury via other methods. This strongly suggests that knowledge leads to different action. Safer needled devices and needle-free systems would make a safer workplace. Further study is indicated to identify if and why the first two hours after returning to work on Sunday or Monday are risky for needlestick injuries. Management practices must ensure compliance to safe practice both by employees and related medical staff.

Resumen
ABSTRACTObjectiveThe aim of this study was to analyze retrospectively the earthquake-induced injuries caused by the October 2015 Hindu Kush earthquake in Pakistan. This is the first population-based study to assess epidemiologically earthquake-induced injuries in the Hindu Kush region, one of the world’s most mountainous and seismically active regions. Unfortunately, only limited studies have investigated the earthquake-induced injuries and deaths in the region epidemiologically.MethodsThe 5 worst affected districts were selected according to the highest number of deaths and injuries recorded. A total of 1,790 injuries and 232 deaths were reported after the 2015 earthquake. In our study area, 391 persons were recorded and verified to have been injured as a result of the earthquake. We attempted to investigate all of the 391 injured people, but the final study looked at 346 subjects because the remaining 45 subjects could not be traced because of the non-availability of their complete records and their refusal to participate in the study.ResultsUsing the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (ICD 10), we found that the highest number – 20.23% (70 of 346) – of injuries in the earthquake fall in the class of “Injuries to an unspecified part of trunk, limb, or body region (T08-T14).” The class of “Injuries to knee and lower leg (S80-S89),” which count 15.61% (54 out of 346), followed it, and “Injuries involving multiple body regions (T00-T07)” were making 14.74% of total injuries (51 out of 346).ConclusionIn times of natural disasters like earthquakes, collecting and analyzing real-time data can be challenging. Therefore, a retrospective data analysis of deaths and injuries induced by the earthquake is of high importance. Studies in these emerging domains will be crucial to initiate health policy debates and to prevent and mitigate future injuries and deaths. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2018;13:732–739).

Resumen
Background- Close association with animals makes zookeepers a high risk group for suffering from various zoonotic diseases. Thus, it is important that they are able to protect themselves from these diseases and injuries through prevention awareness. Objective- To study the knowledge, attitude and practices regarding health hazards among animal handlers in zoological gardens. Materials and Methods- A questionnaire based cross-sectional study conducted in the National Zoological Park, New Delhi, India involving all 66 employees, including 49 who were directly involved in taking care of animals. Result- About 86% of the total participants perceived a risk of suffering from disease or injury due to animal handling. Allergies, tuberculosis and bird flu were commonly perceived risks from animal handling. Majority (69.7%) suggested isolation of animals with infectious diseases. About 65% and 37% were vaccinated for tetanus and rabies respectively. Headache (83.3%), itching (80.3%) and vomiting (77.3%) were the most commonly stated symptoms of zoonotic diseases. While handling animals 59.2% had at least once got injured, after which they were mostly taken to the doctor (79.3%). Only 24.5% had attended training program on zoonotic diseases. Conclusion- There were many lacunae in the knowledge and practices of animal handlers regarding prevention, control and treatment of zoonotic disease and injuries due to animal handling. Training sessions for prevention of zoonotic diseases and injuries are absent. It is important that these issues are addressed promptly and adequately. Also, such study must be conducted in other zoos as situation analysis activity to plan training programmes. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ijosh.v4i1.9146
