Richard III is regarded as one of Shakespeare's longest and most complex plays, with a complicated plot, and a character that is a Machiavellian villain. After a workshop of Act I as an MFA Directing Project, I was granted by Temple University to stage a full production of Richard III as my thesis. Approaching the play proved difficult for me due to my lack of experience with Shakespearean text. However, by analyzing Shakespeare's text, and approaching the adaptation with the goal to make the story as clear as possible, I desired to create a production that embodied the idea of "now." The designed team and I created a world that was a-historic pulling from classic and modern forms that provided the necessary landscape for the play to occur. Through a series of seven chapters I explain my process from conception to production. I also evaluate my growth as a director during this artistic achievement. A Director's Script, Actor's Lexicon, Program Note, Design Renderings and Production Photos support my journey to opening night of Richard III.

[image] The proposed biogenesis of the ladder polyethers features a dramatic series of epoxide opening reactions, elegantly accounts for the structural and stereochemical features of all related natural products, and, in principle, could significantly simplify the synthesis of these extraordinarily complex molecules. In practice, however, such cascades are strongly disfavored, and non-natural directing groups must be covalently attached to each epoxide to overcome this inherent bias. We report herein a general method for directing group-free cascades that also supports the postulated biosynthesis. The two salient aspects of this strategy are a single design principle (a template) and a promoter that both donates and accepts hydrogen bonds. Water is the superior promoter, and it is most effective at approximately pH 7.

Lightburn, Thomas Edward. "Scaffolding Ligands: An Efficient Method for Directing Hydroformylation". Thesis, Boston College, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/2358.
Texto completoChapter 1. Directing groups are a powerful means of controlling the selectivity in reactions. The field of hydroformylation has used directing group strategies to control regio- and diastereoselectivity with much success. However, directing groups are inherently inefficient as they must be installed and removed from the molecule of interest, and generate a stoichiometric byproduct in the process. Strategies to solve this problem have included the use of exchange reactions that allow for transient binding of substrate to a molecule that can direct the course of the reaction. This allows the use of catalytic quantities of the directing functionality to effect the desired transformation, and obviates the need for installation and removal of the directing functionality in separate steps. Chapter 2. Our lab has developed a phosphorous based ligand that incorporates an N,O-acetal moiety that allows for reversible binding of both alcohol substrates and a metal catalyst. These ligands rapidly exchange with alcohols in the presence of catalytic amounts of p-TsOH. The racemic ligand was found to undergo epimerization on exchange with a chiral alcohol in an effort to isolate enantioenriched material. However, a strategy using a thermodynamic gearing effect of adjacent stereocenters was found to be successful in producing a chiral ligand. Chapter 3. Using catalytic quantities of our scaffolding ligand we are able to effect branch- and diastereoselective hydroformylation of homoallylic alcohols. We offer a model based on A1,3 strain for the origin of the diastereoselectivity, and tested substrates to lend support to the model. We also investigated the use of chiral scaffolding ligands in the enantioselective hydroformylation of homoallylic alcohols, and preliminary results show modest enantioselectivity. Chapter 4. We have expanded the substrate scope of our scaffolding ligand strategy to include the hydroformylation of allylic alcohols. We are able to produce β-hydroxy carbonyl compounds in good yields and with excellent selectivities, which offers an alternative to the formaldehyde aldol reaction. We show that our strategy is successful in the hydroformylation of trisubstituted olefins, which are a difficult class of hydroformylation substrates, where we are able to produce single diastereomers in good yields under mild conditions. We investigated the enantioselective hydroformylation of allylic alcohols and found that while racemization may be a problem with these substrates, in-situ hemi-acetal protection may offer a solution to the problem

Texto completoWithin the discipline of information systems sometimes the conception of the main object is that the information system must be computer based. An example of an information system that is non-computer based is the scenic theatre performance. Input is the message or knowledge the participants of the theatre production want to pass over to the audience; output is the information and experiences the performance in itself mediates to the audience. This has been produced through a system development process; although the developers not always have been aware about what development model has been used.
The dissertation combines some of the concepts found in theatre production with traditional system development concepts, and hence introduces new perspectives into the area of information systems. Some of the main findings in the study of theatre productions were the triplicity of a theatre production as a development process, an information system and an organization at the same time; the integrated relations of context, developers and users, which leads to spontaneous changes and overlaps of development roles; and the narrative and dramaturgical approach in the practical use of methods and techniques.
These aspects should be useful also in development of other types of information systems, whether computer based or using other information technologies. The triplicity gives arguments to redefine each of these concepts.
The generalizability of this approach has been validated through a second study, at a folk high school, which showed that models and concepts from theatre productions are possible to generalize to other information system areas than theatre, and that the borders of the organization coincides with the borders of the information system. Especially temporary organizations must be seen as ongoing, continuous development processes.

As You Like It is regarded as one of Shakespeare's mature comedies in that he combines both serious and comic subject matter. Hired by Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in Vancouver, Canada, I was granted permission by Temple University to submit this production as my thesis. Approaching the play from an objective perspective proved initially difficult due to the vast multitude of research materials and my personal experience of having twice performed in the play. However, by analyzing Shakespeare's text, and approaching the play from the ending first, I was able to discover my unique conceit on directing the play. Set during the English Civil War, I was able to establish the necessary two worlds of the play, a Puritan Court and an English Cavalier Forest of Arden. Through a series of six chapters I explain my process from conception to production, as well, I also evaluate my growth as a director during this artistic achievement. A Director's Script, Costume Sketches, an early Set Design and Reviews support my journey to Opening Night of As You Like It.
