Resumen
This research studies the competencies of International Development (ID) project managers from their perspectives, taking into consideration the contextual factors and the challenges that they face when managing ID projects. The study adopts a constructionist ontological viewpoint and an interpretivist epistemological philosophical assumption. The nature of the research is exploratory with an inductive approach, using qualitative research method. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with experienced project managers in International Development projects. Template analysis strategy was used to analyse the data. The findings show that contextual factors have a significant influence on the challenges that ID project managers face when managing projects. Contextual factors are operating environment, large network of stakeholders and intangible goals of ID projects. Five challenges were identified as the results of the context, namely stakeholder management challenge, beneficiary needs analysis challenge, the challenge of balancing strategic and operational views, capacity building and training challenge and sustainable funding challenge. To overcome these challenges, seven ID project manager competencies were identified management skills, personal qualities, interpersonal skills, stakeholder engagement skills, capacity building skills, and change management skills. These competencies are found to be interrelated and complementary. While the role and responsibilities of ID project managers were also uncovered during the research, the findings on contextual factors, challenges and competencies help to better understand the ID project manager role and responsibilities. This study makes the contributions from both theoretical and practical point of view. With regards to theoretical contribution, our findings expanded on ID project manager competencies as well as relating them to the context and challenges in ID projects. The role and responsibilities of ID project manager is another theoretical contribution in this study. From a practical point of view, this thesis’s findings would be useful for various organizations who deliver ID projects, particularly human resources management. In addition, it can act as knowledge sharing with ID project managers and help in designing and enhancing educational programmes in ID project management. Overall, this could result in better delivery and overcoming the challenges of International Development projects.

Resumen

Project success has multiple definitions in the scholarly literature. Research has shown that some scholars and practitioners define project success as the completion of a project within schedule and within budget. Others consider a successful project as one in which the customer is satisfied with the product. This quantitative study was conducted to test the relationship between communications of agile teams and project success. The research also tested the relationship between software process improvement and project success. The researcher presented three different characterizations of project success (time, budget and customer satisfaction). Through correlation testing, the study examined the results of the relationship between communications, software process improvement, and project success. The customer satisfaction definition of project success was more closely correlated with projects in which communications was effective. Projects characterized as having a formal software process improvement process in place were more closely correlated with the cost and schedule definitions of project success. Implications of the study include conducting further research with ordinal data in the regression testing of the independent and dependent variables. Future work should concentrate upon risk and change management in an agile project management project environment. This work furthers the ideas contained in the Project Management Second Order (PM-2) framework.

In large projects measuring progress is always difficult due to the complexities involved, because the realization is shared among departments of a firm or even between firms disseminated all over the world. Project management and operations research literature is reviewed for discovering various techniques applicable. Widely used tools for progress measurement and forecasting, such as Earned Value Analysis, Progress Plot, Milestone and Resource slip charts, concurrent engineering, can be employed. This thesis is based on a problem of pharmaceutical industry where the effectiveness of a certain medical treatment is examined on patients in a number of countries. The number of variables involved increase the complexity of this problem. The main objective is to analyze the effectiveness of a solution in different situations during the project such that a better project duration and a lower cost can be achieved. Our findings suggest that reallocation of patients among countries produces better results in terms of progress

Resumen
Despite project finance advancing as a crucial tool in funding huge capital outlay projects that facilitate development little research has been conducted in assessing whether it is the most optimum way of funding big project especially when one looks at the value addition in respect of the shareholders. Consequently, this research attempts to examine whether Project Finance when compared to conventional funding done under Corporate Finance does contribute to shareholders value in funding huge capital outlay projects. The research was conducted in two phases. The first phase analysed the Mozal Project which was jointly funded by the IDC and other parties under project finance. In this phase the research assess how the IDC as a funder established measures to protect and enhance value for its shareholders in funding the project. The phase goes further by assessing the value created by the investment from an IDC shareholder point of view. The results are then compared to that of other high capital magnitude projects funded under on balance sheet finance. The second phase comprised of 5 interviews and 25 questionnaires with local Project Finance industry professionals with the aim of establishing the common view on which between on balance sheet and off balance sheet finance has a positive impact on shareholders' value. The first phase led to a general guide on funding projects via project finance does add to shareholder value or not whilst the second phase gave a factual conclusion on whether funding shareholder value through project finance creates value. Specific recommendations for further research work was also indicated where it was felt that there are certain areas that can help in advancing the research subject.

Resumen
This research highlights the value of Real Options Analysis (ROA) as a process in the evaluation of an oil extraction project in Sub-Saharan Africa. It shows the benefits it can bring to not only the final project evaluation but also to the project design selection process. The research then extends the application of ROA by developing and applying a framework which incorporates the fact that project flexibility has a positive impact on the projects value in the face of downside risk. ROA, by virtue of its explicit cash flow volatility modelling provides a framework for a consideration of the optimal level of project debt. In this case it suggests that the project can carry more debt than would have been acceptable if the more traditional NPV method was used in its evaluation.

Resumen
Lack of appropriate level of beneficiary involvement during the project lifecycle may lead to mismatch between the project output and needs of beneficiaries. Therefore, involving beneficiaries in the project helps to assure that the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) provide the right solution to needs of beneficiaries as well as sustaining project results. Although beneficiary involvement is useful, the challenge is to determine how and when to involve beneficiaries in the project.    The purpose of this study is to improve the process of managing beneficiary involvement in NGOs. To achieve this, a review of the existing literature was done to have an initial understanding of beneficiary involvement. During our literature review, we identified six progressive levels of involvement which include: information sharing, listening and learning, joint assessment, shared decision-making, collaboration and empowerment.  Based on this literature review, we suggested a framework for managing beneficiary involvement.   In addition, we conducted a multiple case study and collected data from five different cases through interviews. Our respondents were professionals with several years of experience in developing and implementing development projects which are aimed at improving the livelihood of vulnerable communities. Through the analysis of the empirical findings, we got new insights on how the process of beneficiary involvement is managed. We identified four additional levels of beneficiary involvement within the project cycle. These include incentive system, peer facilitators, group forming, and cost sharing. The study also reveals the factors that affect beneficiary involvement, such as cultural context and, donors’ influence and requirements. We also highlighted that the appropriate level of beneficiary involvement should be chosen depending on the project context. Regardless of these factors, the research findings show that beneficiary involvement creates a sense of ownership, enhances project outcome and is useful in sustaining a project’s results in the long term. Therefore, NGOs should endeavour to involve beneficiaries as much as possible to ensure that the projects being implemented are addressing community needs.

Resumen
The increased usage and need for software as part of products has challenged traditional project management, nevertheless for hardware heavy organisations that are used to rely on the linear prediction and tracking of project outcomes. The developments in projects with embedded systems have countless dependencies and almost impossible to predict. Literature shows that software development projects have problems meeting the initial goals of budget, time, and scope. This is discovered too late due to insufficient methods of tracking progress. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how large agile software development projects can continuously be followed to evaluate their performance and meet initial customer agreements fixed in time, budget, and scope. The thesis was conducted at Saab, active in the defense and security industry. This qualitative exploratory study was conducted with semistructured interviews and focus group discussions at the case company Saab, benchmark interviews with two additional companies, and an extensive literature study. The issues with the existing tracking approach were explored to determine how progress tracking may be created to continuously measure progress and indicate if project goals will be accomplished or not. The more general challenges in software development were also investigated to provide knowledge about areas in need of additional metrics which could indicate the problem and mitigate it. One industry-specific challenge is the security aspect that is unavoidable and requires a lot of documentation that holds up the development activities. Other detected challenges were difficulties in understanding requirements that lead to faulty estimations and work in the wrong direction, undiscovered dependencies that lead to a lot of rework and waiting for additional parts, insufficient testing environments that lead to late feedback, and holds up the development. It was also visible that the projects were conducted with different management approaches and no best-proven practice existed for tracking performance. From an analysis of the empirical data and existing literature, a suggestion of method tracking design was developed for large agile software projects with fixed contracts. The models were proposed to allow flexibility, enable control, and provide a holistic view. As Saab intends to introduce Earned Value Management in their software projects, this method was complemented with COMOD, TRL, IRL, and SRL to provide these three characteristics. Transparency and visibility of both products and processes are also found to be key to project success, thus additional metrics to increase visibility in projects are suggested to enable efficient project leading.

Using certain practices for managing projects is a critical factor in successfully executing projects. For a firm where there are few set practices by the organization for managing projects, project managers have to create their own practices with varying degrees of success. Experienced project managers often have had plenty of time to develop fully functioning practices whereas new project managers struggle to find any practice to use. This thesis examines how learning from previous projects at Saab Dynamics can improve the project management practices project risk management and intra-project communication. Further, this thesis proposes how Saab Dynamics can improve continuous risk management and intra-project communication.  A qualitative approach is utilized for this thesis where the data is collected from five separate interviews with project managers from various development projects at Saab Dynamics. The result from the interviews partly contains successful practices used by project managers, such as how to integrate sub-projects or how to manage risks continuously, but also highlights issues for the projects. These findings are analyzed by applying relevant research from the fields of learning in project-based organizations, project risk management and intra-project communication which resulted in a discussion and conclusion providing various recommendations for Saab Dynamics to improve each project management practice.  Key findings include that functions are needed to facilitate learning and how post-project reviews need to be structured to transfer tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge, where focus needs to be on documenting using stories. Further, this thesis utilizes a model for risk maturity with five steps where only the top two allow for continuous risk management. To progress to these steps the importance of building a risk culture is recognized where the issue is in communicating the set process of risk management to project managers. Here, having a risk manager is identified as important. Intra-project communication focuses on the areas of information distribution, sub-project integration and communication planning. It was found that the information distribution needs to be balanced between forced and voluntary communication. Moreover, five mechanisms for integration are covered where some are more important for complex projects and some during high uncertainty. Lastly, a model for a communication plan is presented.

Resumen
Successful innovation depends to a high degree on an organization’s ability to develop an effective Research & Development (R&D) process and during the last decades many companies have adopted Stage-Gate® or similar methodologies. Although such methodologies are credited with significantly improving R&D results at many companies, there is still potential for improvement, if organizations can learn from projects. Each and every R&D project should not only result in a successful new product but also generate learning for the organization, because this has a high importance for the competitive advantage of an organization. Post-project reviews (PPRs) are recognized by both practitioners and academics as an appropriate mechanism to stimulate project-to-project learning in R&D project teams. However, PPRs are used by relatively few companies, and those that do utilize them often fail to do so adequately. Surprisingly, although PPRs are widely perceived to be a useful tool, empirical research on how they can best be used and how they support learning within a project team is very limited. This thesis addresses this gap in the extant knowledge and describes five in-depth exploratory case studies, which investigated how PPRs are conducted, how they are perceived by R&D managers and the project-to-project learning that can result from PPRs. Based on a complex research design which combines qualitative and quantitative data from documents, interviews and the observation of PPR meetings, the results show that current PPR practices vary much across different organizations. Furthermore, R&D managers perceive PPRs as important for learning in R&D project teams but difficult to manage effectively. An important result was also that tacit knowledge and experiences play an important role when analysing project-to-project learning. Although the operationalization of tacit knowledge is difficult, the detailed analysis of lessons learnt and metaphors used allowed to gather conclusions on the supporting role of PPRs for the creation and transfer of both explicit and tacit knowledge.

AbstractThe majority of companies working with new product development today are using a productdevelopment process. Although very helpful, a process will not guarantee successful productdevelopment. One of the most important aspects to consider in projects and product developmentis communication - how project members exchange information with one another. Successfulproduct development is hard to achieve without efficient project communication. This master thesis is based on the previously mentioned background. The questions to beanswered are: What problems exist within product development projects? How are these relatedto communication? How can communication be improved to solve them? To answer thesequestions, a case study at the product development company ITT Water and Waste Water wascarried out. By conducting 37 interviews, data regarding the company’s communication anddevelopment process has been collected. In addition, theories regarding project development andcommunication are researched. Together, theses constitute the basis for the thesis analysis. The empirical research showed that there indeed exist problems in the case company’sdevelopment process: a lack of project evaluation, too development times, a lack of marketorientation, and decisions being made without sufficient information. The later two where foundclosely dependent on communication.Further research showed that introducing a project overview would solve these problems. As afinal conclusion, a layout of the proposed project overview was introduced. Even thoughinsufficient communication is not believed to be the only cause for the identified problems, theauthors believe that the project overview would in part solve them. Since there are largesimilarities in how product development is carried out at different companies, the findings aremost likely transferable to other organizations.

Resumen
Masihlumisane (let’s grow together) is a community based project in a small rural community of Glenmore situated to the south of the Great Fish River Nature Reserve (GFRNR) and half way between Grahamstown and Peddie in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This rural community was established as a resettlement center during pre-1994 South African government forced removals (Hallett, 1994). Glenmore is economically and socially impoverished as there are few businesses, little economic activity and minimal social tradition in the settlement (Murray, 1989). This village is characterised by an out migration of people of an economically active age, high unemployment amongst residents, dysfunctional families due to parents living elsewhere in order to earn a living, and a youthful population desperate to obtain skills and experiences that will benefit them when they leave Glenmore in the future.

Resumen
Although projects and project management has grown to be increasingly influential in all aspects of business operations, project success and efficiency is often harder to measure and arguably harder to execute. Many projects may often change the course of intent, exceed the initial budget, or even finish later than expected. This causes a great debate on the different ways to efficiently manage projects and what actually works best in practise. According to different scholars, some sides mention that traditional methods where planning is completed at the very beginning is the most efficient way to manage projects, while others mention the use of adaptive methods where planning is not ‘set in stone’.  Project management as an academic field is relatively well explored, however as the COVID-19 continues to set restrictions to stop the spread of the virus, academic research to increase the empirical data on project management during the pandemic is needed. This study aims to contribute to this academic field to understand the reasoning behind project management adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, this study will aim to gain understanding to the why’s and how’s of common themes regarding how projects have adapted. The industries this study will focus on will be the Swedish game-development industry and the Swedish heavy industry.  Based on a literature search and review on project management evaluations methods, leadership styles, risk and crisis management, and project management methodologies, semi-structured interviews took place with CEO’s, project managers, and other senior managers in decision making positions, representing a total of six firms with three from each industry. The respondents were categorized based on their industry and if their project was completed or not.  The analysis showed practical similarities in the implementations between projects, such as hygienic aspects in the workplace, remote working, and other practical implementations from the guidelines of the Swedish health authorities. The analysis also found the common theme of project responses being external threat recognition followed by the adaptation of remote working, the expansion of communication and finally the closure of the project. the analysis did however find smaller variations depending on the size of the firm and industry, such that smaller projects did not always need a firm wide remote working unit and that heavy industry projects leaned towards traditional project management methodologies with hints of agile methods, while the game-development projects quite explicitly used agile methods. While the study does contribute to the academic field of project management with empirical data and may provide guidance in future pandemics and similar situations, further research is needed in order to gain a full understanding on the pandemics effect on projects in Sweden, especially through a study covering a larger study size.

Resumen
Project management is entering into every aspect of our work with high speed but a relatively low success rate. Based on research into the current project management literature, this thesis concludes that three elements - a competent project manager, right project definition and right project organization are the key factors that determine the project success. This study focuses on the first of these three factors: selection of a competent project manager. The research process uses a web formed questionnaire based on the 102 Project Management Institute competency elements designed to measure Project Manager Knowledge, Performance and Personal competency. This questionnaire was used to gather data concerning real-world experience of critical project management skills from 16 people who have professional project experiences. Based on this data, a new project management tool was developed to highlight effective project manager selection considerations and effective organizational use of project management analysis and problem solving processes. This new tool attempts to assist the combination of project manager capabilities and organizational capabilities to achieve more effective project success. As a pilot survey, 16 respondents who have project experiences using a project-management approach were invited to complete the study project management questionnaire. The responses concerning the importance of the various elements named in the questionnaire were analyzed. The analysis resulted in a profile representing the critical skills associated with project management from the view of the expert respondents. This thesis proposes this profile as a project manager selection method. It also analyzes organizational project management problems in light of the selection model proposed as a way of helping the project manager, project, and organization move toward more sustainable development. As a part of future research, the effectiveness of this tool in distinguishing between effective and less effective project managers will form the basis of potential future research.

Resumen
This report outlines the work I carried out during a three year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project. The project itself was design and development based, producing a design for a new product through to manufacturing and identifying marketing strategies for the product. The product is a hydraulic hammer which is used in construction, demolition and quarrying industries. The hydraulic hammer is classed as a carrier attachment. The hydraulic hammer attaches either to the arm of an excavator or the rear arm of a backhoe loader and uses the carrier's hydraulic system to allow it to operate. The report provides an in depth review of prior learning relevant to the development of a new and novel hydraulic hammer product and a detailed analysis of research methods required for the project. An analysis of suitable design methods and a review of the hydraulic hammer project background is outlined and a detailed analysis of leading edge software to deliver a new and novel simulated hydraulic prototype hammer product is discussed. The report also contains an investigation of leading edge manufacturing facilities relevant to a new and novel hammer product. A procedure for initial and field testing was produced and conducted to gain an in depth operational understanding of the hammer design and is included in the report. Economics relating to the manufacture of products and processes used throughout Europe are examined and the relevant British and European standards relating to manufacture and processes are analysed. Marketing techniques and strategies required when a new and novel product is launched into an existing market is also provided. Finally, the KTP is examined in relation to the provision of experiential work based learning and an analysis of the value of work based learning for the development and delivery of knowledge through KTP using experimental theories is also presented.

Resumen

Examining the design education climate of Los Angeles results in finding a broken art education system and misconceived notions about graphic design. The struggle to implement design education into the lives of high school students leads to some students who have access to art classes with an emphasis on technical digital art and some students who have never taken an art or design class. This project is the work of bringing design education to students in the Los Angeles area. This design curriculum was created to promote creative process, problem solving, play and experimentation, and a deeper understanding of the use of graphic design as a communication tool. This curriculum was implemented at the High School Institutes at Inner-City Arts, a nonprofit that provides free arts education to thousands of youth in Los Angeles.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 61-62).
The biotechnology industry has experienced fast growth during the first 30 years of its existence but is now reaching a stage of maturity. Companies are being challenged by weak pipelines and patent expirations, as well as increasing regulation. Mergers and acquisitions are frequent, and companies are forced to reduce planned capital expenditures, as well as restructure with personnel cuts and facility reductions. This thesis focuses on the affect those changes are having on the development of capital projects. It researches the environment as it used to be and what is now bringing the changes. Through literature search and case study, the thesis aims to capture the reasons for why the main driver of new facilities construction has shifted from time to cost and the affect that is having on the management and delivery of such projects.

Resumen
Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Government of South Africa introduced the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) as a means of addressing the sub-standard, living conditions many underprivileged and disadvantaged societies were experiencing in the country. That gave community development impetus. The RDP, as a government policy, presupposed that public institutions would be responsible for its implementation. That implied that public officials, inter alia, would have to facilitate community development. This change agent status of public officials also implied that they would have, out of necessity and demand, to acquire or to demonstrate knowledge of project and community development management skills. Management sciences argue that an organisations' effectiveness is, amongst other, the result of interplay between the internal capacity (inputs), outputs (production) and outcomes (impacts). Internal capacity includes, among others, the training of personnel for the achievement of goals. This study, as stated in the research question, seeks to explain the relationship between project management training and effective community development. It seeks to establish whether there are a significant number of public officials who are trained in project management for community development. The study focuses on the Province of the Eastern Cape, especially the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, with special reference to cultural officers. The study further presents the Willowvale Case Study to demonstrate in a practical way the relevance of project management skills to the implementation of community development programmes. This case study also serves as base to launch arguments in favour of trained public officials. The research results suggest that public officials, especially cultural officers, lack project management skills. These findings presuppose that the implementation of some community development projects may be flawed, delayed or postponed. The study recommends that the Province of the Eastern Cape consider setting up an interdepartmental body for the purpose of establishing an integrated project and community development training policy, in consultation with relevant tertiary institutions for support and advice.

The development of new products and processes is a crucial point of competition and due to the rapid technological development and strong international competition, companies are being forced to design better products faster and more efficiently. In the last two decades large companies in particular have developed increasingly sophisticated models, process descriptions, structures and routines for how to steer and manage their often large and complex projects. Processes in product development projects often contain many dependencies among both tasks and people, requiring coordination of activities and the opportunity to capture incomplete information that evolves over time. When attempting to increase project performance, a strong focus has been on the efficiency of the projects, on doing things right. As a result, both in industry and in research, effectiveness, doing the right things, has gained less importance than it probably should. For companies to really increase their performance, effectiveness must be considered to a much higher extent. The objective of the research presented in this thesis has been to increase the knowledge of how the performance of projects in a product development context can be improved. This involves investigating factors which affects performance on different levels of the projects such as the individual working on the project, the single project, the project organisation, the company, and the business context. Data have been collected through literature studies as well as a case study divided into two parts. The research results show that project organisations face the challenge of being able to have projects running efficiently according to plan while at the same time exploring and creating new knowledge. Formalised product development processes can support the progress of projects, but there is a risk that exploratory work and innovation could suffer. This is a challenge, especially in contexts characterised by uncertainty and complexity. Further, a number of areas which affect the project performance were identified, including the business context, process characteristics, project model, project characteristics, and project management. These findings have resulted in a proposed start of a framework for improving product development project performance in dynamic contexts.

Resumen
The collegiate level student-athletes are subjected to a world that is different than other adolescents beginning their university experience. These individuals embark on their college campuses with more than freshman level English and dorm selection as their greatest sources of stress. On the contrary this level of athletics and education is the genesis for many into the world of professional athletics. These young individuals are ushered into a world where balancing the many perils, pitfalls and pleasantries of a college campus are events that could be construed as the makings of a fulltime job...their sport of choice. The irony of this world is that only a tiny percentage of the student-athletes will make an actual career out of their particular sport, however the training and preparation is the same for all. To top it off, each and every one of the student athletes believes they will be the one to achieve professional status with their talent. American college communities more often than not promote the fact that they are places for adolescents to grow and explore themselves in various ways. Erik Erikson (1982) has determined that the Identity vs. Identity Confusion crisis takes place at this very time and if not successfully resolved one will develop in a psychosocial manner that can impact negatively throughout the rest of one's life. The impasse that the student athlete is faced with is that so much is determined by their performance in their sport rather than their performance as an individual away from their sport. I will focus on the identity development of male and female adolescent collegiate student-athletes and how these two very important components, gender identity and social group identity, interplay in the development of some adolescents and create its own type of identity development completely, Student-Athlete Identity Development (S.A.I.D.) It will be argued that student-athletes, particularly males, have embarked upon this time of exploration in their lives and begin with a foreclosed sense of identity and within months they start to alter their view of self as well as their place within the athletic world.

Resumen
To provide a more in-depth analysis of potential roadway projects, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) desired a method of evaluating projects according to their economic potential without using potentially costly computer models or excessive data collection. Brigham Young University (BYU) was retained to research and recommend criteria for the economic development criteria in the project-prioritization process. A literature review was first undertaken to better understand the transportation-economic development relationship. Using the literature review, combined with the information from the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, the Governor's Office of Planning and Budget, the Governor's Office of Economic Development, and a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), criteria were established to evaluate the economic potential of a roadway project. The criteria were finalized using a Policy Delphi method that included the Research Team and TAC. The four aggregate criteria and one bonus criterion recommended are: 1) population and education; 2) existing infrastructure; 3) economic attractiveness; 4) tourism; and 5) the bonus: economic choke-points, which allows UDOT regions to specify a prioritized list of projects that could help increase the economic development potential of an area if those projects are built. An evaluation framework was also developed for the economic development criteria. Any project that passes the Tier I analysis is recommended to be subjected to the economic analysis of the Tier II process. The researchers recommend that once a list of passing Tier I projects is received, the list should be sent out to any participating in the expert feedback portion of the economic attractiveness scoring as well as to the UDOT regions and districts for choke-point prioritization analysis. All of the databases will be updated to provide the most up-to-date scoring possible. When all of the scores have been assigned, the projects will then be listed by highest to lowest scores. The list will then be compiled by UDOT who will present the information to the Transportation Commission in a manner that will best assist in the decision-making process. The research created a scoring evaluation for each recommended criterion. Each criterion also received a weighting. The scoring and the framework are recommended to UDOT as the economic analysis of the Tier II evaluation. The criteria are recommended to be automated in a geographic information systems (GIS) database to aid in the scoring process.

Resumen
South Africa has witnessed series of social unrest, many of which ended in violence by very poor communities who allege poor delivery of basic goods and services. The majority of South African citizens are poor and pervasive inequality exists between men and women and between black and white peoples of the country. The poverty alleviation strategies inequalities and the consequences of poverty amongst women in rural areas (Ozoemena, 2010). Cacadu District municipality has done a study analysis on poverty alleviation in 2009-2010 together with the Baviaans municipality to verify which areas was the most poorest in Baviaans municipality. The findings came as Vondeling and Riertbron which was the poorest area. The focus was on tourism side because Baviaans is the tourist area.Rietbron and Vondeling is part of Baviaans Arts and craft program that was previously funded by DEDEAT R500, 00 but only benefited after incorporated to Baviaans municipality as they were previously managed by Cacadu District Municipality before and the municipality decided to invest in this areas. The funding for DEDEAT was utilized for trainings, starting material and equipment’s and building of the Baviaanskoof Craft Shop for two projects which is Vondeling and Steytlerville and Rietbron did not benefit at that time. This study focuses on the income generating projects in Baviaans municipality with the view to describe the experiences of individuals who participate in these income generating projects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of income generating projects in addressing poverty alleviation. Steytlerville projects is using waste materials like old newspaper, raw material, broken cups to do jewellery .Vondeling and Rietbron project is an angel factory producing beaded wire angels by using materials locally produced merino wool, wire wool, beads and local products such as ostrich feathers .This study is based on a case study which gives a description of poverty and reflects an involvement process of beneficiaries or communities in an income generating project and how it is impacting on their livelihoods. Qualitative and quantitative methodology were used. According to Neuman (2000: 30), the quantitative data methods refer to the collection of data using numbers, counts and measures of things and qualitative research basically involves the use of words, pictures description and narratives”. Data was collected for interviews. In order to collect accurate information, an interview was conducted based on the author’s research questions. Research was conducted in different areas like Steytlerville, Vondeling and Rietbron. A questionnaire was used as a form of data collection for the three projects. These interviews were conducted formally in a focus group composed of the projects members. In Steytlerville they were 5 members, Vondeling 7 members and Rietbron10 members which make a sample of 22 members. These projects have two craft shop where they sell their product which is Willomore craft shop and Baviaanskloof craft shop. The craft shop has been established to create an outlet by which locally sustainably made craft can be displayed and sold. The craft shop has been developed in such a way that is a real life example of a green building and business .The craft shop is an example of how to be environmentally friendly and utilise nature in such a way that it is sustainable and does not destroy it. The research findings suggested that in certain instances, Baviaans Craft project has been successful in generating income for members. The market for these crafters is mainly tourists. From this research it came out clear that some of the project members were able to acquire skills which help them to find employment in well-established craft business. Despite the successful of Baviaans Craft project, the project members were somewhat constrained in managing and running the business. For example with response for special markets, they had to make use of external skills i.e. someone who made contacts with the export market and there after divide the profits amongst members. The project members were not adequately empowered in management skills.

Resumen
Thesis (DBA)--Macquarie University, Graduate School of Management, 2008.
Bibliography: p. 267-292.
The telecommunications industry ('Telco'), a service provider business, is undergoing significant changes such as deregulations, technology changes and increasing competition. Managers face increased pressure to bring new products with the latest technology into the market faster. Few previous studies have analysed New Product Development (NPD) projects in this hypercompetitive industry. This research addresses this gap by investigating Telco NPD projects and the associated skill sets needed by successful project managers.--The study evaluated how project managers' various skills contribute to project management success. Incorporating clear definitions grounded in the recent literature on NPD, management and leadership, the research proposed a new organising framework of four groups of skill sets: technical, leadership, managerial and administrative. Technical skills are the knowledge of technologies on which the project work is based. Leadership skills involve influencing project stakeholders to deliver a quality product within time and budget. Managerial skills are needed to develop and execute project plans and to get project work done. Administrative skills include understanding an organisation's structure, culture, policies, processes, methods and tools.--Previous classifications for Telco NPD projects have over-emphasised product innovation and undervalued the process aspects. While small projects provide fewer management challenges, this study found that project managers of large and complex projects require all four skill sets. Managerial skills are mandatory. Technical and administrative skills enhance understanding of the technology and business processes. Leadership skills are limited at an operational level. Managerial and administrative skills are essential for developing and implementing project plans; technical skills are important in the initial project stages; leadership skills are needed from the beginning until delivering a new product.--The research outcomes can be used when hiring and developing NPD project manager professionals in the Telco industry to complement current project manager competency standards, which do not cover all the skill sets. Findings may be applicable to Telco companies in other countries new to such market conditions. Furthermore, other industries may adapt the skill set framework to suit their own particular requirements.

Resumen
Conducting Development Projects as fast as possible is very important for gaining as much profit from your product as possible. One method for conducting Development Projects is Lean. Lean is a way of working which focuses on getting rid of time consuming tasks that doesn’t bring in any value for the final product such as long meetings, searching for information, waiting for decisions etc. Habia Cable uses Lean thinking in their development method but still has problems with projects being delayed. The task of this project is to investigate one of their development projects to see how well it followed the plan and budget set up at the beginning. The goal is to develop the Lean method used and make it more adjusted to the workings at Habia Cable. The investigation was made by interviewing all project participants and some experienced Project Managers as well as looking thru documentation from the project. The conclusions from the investigation were that all the goals for the project except one have been met. The one that haven’t been met jet is the one that they are still working on. The goals need to become more open to cope with the changes in the market. The Synchronization Plan for the project was too detailed and took too much time to set up. The Risk Plan was good and had realistic actions but requires more follow up. The budget for the project was lacking estimations for production costs and for all consultants. More time should be spent on creating the budget and it also requires more follow-up and updating when new investments are required. The new project method developed was based on the idea that conditions for the project keeps changing. The method has the same tools but with some changes. The Goal Picture is allowed to be changed and it is evaluated regularly. The Synchronization Plan has is built of larger blocks, which are broken down into smaller tasks, as each block is started. A time line has also been added although it is also rough. The risks are divided into two groups, single tasks risks and ongoing risks. The single task risks are given an action and responsible person. The ongoing risks are graded and the top tem risks are given a set of action and a person responsible for handling it. The budget has more people involved in its creation and is based on a pre-defined list of categories.

The purpose of this thesis was to explore what challenges are identified in project portfolio management (PPM) in an internal multi-project environment. The aim of this study was to find the underlying reason for the occurrence of challenges in terms of how these challenges occur, and why do they occur. To realize the purpose and the aim of the study, the research was conducted at ABB Components, a business unit of ABB Group. Further, based on identified challenges provide a set of guidelines and recommendations for managing and countering the challenges. To understand the research problem a literature review was employed and a case study was conducted at ABB Components. The purpose of the literature review was to gain a theoretical background related to the research topic, identify challenges or problems, and potential solutions, with the purpose of establishing a connection to the challenges identified in the case study. The empirical work consisted of the case study conducted at ABB Components and was constituted by interviews person. The analysis of the results was validated with a workshop held with interviewees, with discussions regarding the findings. Guidelines and recommendations for managing challenges related to project portfolio management were designed from the results of empirical and theoretical work. The 11 main challenges related to project portfolio management were identified throughout three defined project phases, initiation of a project, execution of a project and project closure, and was appearing either in one phase or across phases. The challenges in this research were correlated to four main causes; limited resources (budget & time), limited resources (personnel), vague directives, and project maturity. The identified challenges can be encountered and managed by utilizing existing models for project management, improved information handling, expanding the notion of criteria for project success, performing a resource capacity analysis, and planning for the project closure. The theoretical and practical work have contributed to a collective analysis of what types of challenges are evident in phases throughout a single project, and what outcomes these challenges can have on a project portfolio in an internal multi-project environment and . It has to some extent indicated differences among challenges and causes evident in multi-project settings, for projects that are classified as internal development or product development, implicating differences throughout the project phase. Furthermore the challenges have pivoted around the three main themes centered indicating that there are challenges related to each phase of the project life, as well as challenges which are apparent across the project phases.

Resumen
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The fundamental purpose of this study is to establish the extent to which theory and practice relate in the context of community participation. The point of departure is to understand what participation entails and the methodologies available to the development practitioner. As illustrated by the case study, there is a meaningful relationship between theory and the practicing of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), which is the methodology of choice for the project. Although the PRA techniques were utilized in gathering data for the project, many of the key decisions were made independently of the community. This brings to light the controversy between technical expertise on the one hand and to what extent the community should be included in any decisions made at this technical level, especially since they may only end up rubber-stamping the professional's opinions anyway. The question arises whether or not the whole concept of empowerment is simply a utopian concept. This is by no means an easy question to answer. However, the case study does illustrate that participation can be harnessed to achieve a successful project. It is important to note that even in difficult circumstances where 'dependency' has taken root, there exists hope that the people can actively participate in the project. It also reinforces the urgency of the need to actively encourage social change that will inspire people towards participation. This has been viewed for too long by the local people as the domain of the educated only. It is therefore important that development agencies create awareness of participation since it cuts across all their projects.

Background: During the last decades there has been a rapid increase in the desire of being more flexible and responsive, which has paved the way for Agile Project Management – APM. As a consequence of implementing APM into environments previously defined as traditional, it has opened up a discussion of merging APM with Traditional Project Management – TPM. This combination of methodologies is referred to as Hybrid Project Management – HPM, whose aim is to leverage benefits from both APM and TPM. Purpose: Prior research has failed to keep up with this trend. Those that have shed light on this phenomenon have failed to realize the differences between IT and non-IT sectors. With this in mind, and the call for including managers’ perspective on HPM, this study has investigated project managers’ experiences and perceptions of factors that influence hybrid project success in physical product development. In order to address this purpose this study has also investigated how project managers perceive project success. This was done since one must first determine what constitutes project success in order to identify what factors that could bear a potential influence on it. Method: From an interpretivist philosophical standpoint this, exploratory and inductive, study has been carried out through semi-structured interviews with experienced project managers within HPM. Inspired by Grounded Theory, this study has employed purposive sampling and analyzed the data through a grounded analysis technique. Conclusion: This research has successfully identified a range of various factors that influence hybrid projects’ success. Based upon this, a model exhibiting the factors influencing hybrid projects in physical product development could be constructed, as well as a model depicting how project managers perceive hybrid project success. It was found that there is a constant tension between the TPM and APM when merging the two. Instead of identifying one way to optimize the hybrid project, it is more or less about managing this balance between APM and TPM practices. It was also found that project success is a dynamic and subjective concept, rather than the static and additive concept that is often illustrated by contemporary research.

Resumen
The aim of this project was to determine the extent to which an agricultural project contributes to the alleviation of poverty in a community. This was done through a case study of one agricultural project based in Kidds Beach, in the Eastern Cape. The research was conducted utilizing the qualitative research method. The findings depicted that the standard of living for the community had altered due the employment opportunities afforded by the project. The findings also illustrated the project is the only one of its nature in the Eastern Cape and that similar projects are in the process of being established in communities in the Transkei. The cultivation of macadamia nuts is costly and the target market is concentrated largely in Europe. The success of the first crop and the dividends procured, the project has proven itself to be a sound method of community and rural development which can encourage investment from other parties.
