Texto completoThe current work is composed of the complete edition of theatre by Jean Desmarets (1595-1676). This writer, who experimented with nearly all literary genres, occupied for a short period a key position in, seventeenth century theatre. From 1636 until the death of the Cardinal Richelieu (1642), he was Richelieu's official playwright, taking over from the "Five Authors" and thus becoming the principal actor of cultural and theatrical policies taken on by his superior. In addition to the truly editorial work of establishment the texts, nuancing and establishing the variations and annotating the works, we have studied the conditions of the creation of each text, the sources and the way that Desmarets used them. Finally, in the general introduction, as well as in the presentation of each of the dramatic works edited, we felt compelled to reply to the main question asked by critics for three and a half centuries : how far did the unusual situation of Desmarets with regard to Richelieu influence his theatre, or in other words, how much of it is political and how much is aesthetic (understood in the sense of generic codes, rhetoric, and themes which constitute the theatre of this period) in the creation of his seven pieces : Aspasie (1636), Les Visionnaires (1637), Scipion (1638), Roxane (1640), Mirame (1641), Erigone (1642) et Europe (1642)

Texto completoIn this work we discuss about the article Physical Geography, that was created by Nicolas Desmarest and published in the Diderot and DAlemberts Encyclopedia in 1757. The article introduced a proposal to do and to think Geography different from what is commonly accepted by the History of Geography to the 18th century geographical thought. It was elaborated by the man of letters Nicolas Desmarest, in the middle of the Enlightenment and the French encyclopedism. This work analyzed the article in the context of this movement and in the scientific traditions that theorized the Earth and its phenomena in the 18th century first half. In front of this discussion, we noted the existence of a genuine Geography theorized by the Enlightenment and propagated by the Encyclopedia, which Nicolas Desmarest assumed a central position to the development of this knowledge. Furthermore, this work revealed an important scientific controversy between the Physical Geography and the Theory of the Earth that was discussed by Nicolas Desmarest and Buffon, in the dawn of so-called modern Geology and Geography.
Calonier, Pierre. "L'entretien artistique et l'engouement théâtral (1660-1715) : le songe de Philomathe par Félibien". Saint-Etienne, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988STET2007.
Texto completoThroughout our study, we have aimed at pointing out a new literary genre appeared between 1660 and 1715 : "l'entretien artistique" through six works : « Les délices des arts » by Desmarests de Saint-Sorlin (1659), « La peinture » by Perrault (1668), « La gloire du Val de Grâce » by Molière (1669), a dialogue about art in « Le songe » by Vaux de la Fontaine (1673), « Le songe de Philomathe » by Félibien (1683) and a "prologue d'opéra" by Boileau (1713). Not only has the comparing of these texts stressed the existence of a new literary genre but also helped to detect close links between pictorial aesthetics which is what "l'entretien artistique" is about and theatrical aesthetics. As a matter of fact, it has seemed to us of a paramount importance to emphasize the necessity of the dramatizing of art, an idea which gained recognition in the 17th century and which succeeded in associating painting with theatre. Close to the theatrical world, "l'entretien artistique" by advocating the "gathering of arts" becomes a kind of clear meditation about the art of opera. Disclosing the tastes of a period by giving prominence to a certain aesthetical conception, "l'entretien artistique" seems then to find its justification in theatre by offering the seventeenth century man a "modus vivendi" so that he should become more of an "honnete homme"
