The construction of a renewed habitability of the contemporary Alpine space requires a profound critical revision of the ways of looking and of the cultures concerning the theme of re-use of the built heritage. Over the last few decades, a sort of crystallization of imaginaries, operational practices and development ideas has emerged around the two terms of re-use and heritage and their ways of interaction, which today is likely to be an obstacle to the construction of new development scenarios for the Alpine region. Trying to imagine new values and meanings of the concepts of reuse and heritage, however, requires the questioning of those patrimonialization cultures that have served as the ultimate framework for the project of the Alpine space. The essay reconstructs those design processes that, starting from a renewed productive vision of the mountain, attempt today to overcome a hypostatized vision of the conventional cultural landscape produced by the patrimonialist paradigm, to embrace a transformative attitude of the heritage based on the materic character of the basic elements of the Alpine space. In particular we want to underline how the contemporary design culture in the Alps is directed to the development of synthetic languages aimed at capturing the stratified and diachronic dimension of the built landscape through metasemic cognitive and interpretative practices. It is an attitude that, against a background of the change in perspective brought about by climate change and environmental issues, allows the maximization of the opportunities and physical resources recovered in the place, perfectly in line with the aptitude for the continuous re-use of the Alpine civilizations of the past, which focuses on the awareness of participating in a constructive process of transformation of the long lasting Alpine territory.

Resumen
In this project, a gamified mediation strategy is proposed for the enhancement of the industrial heritage of Colonia Güell through the Street Escape tool. The general objectives are the conceptualization and design of a mediation strategy and its subsequent evaluation, as well as the analysis of the results obtained. In order to achieve these objectives, an investigation was developed that has as key points the gamification in heritage spaces and the Escape Room tourism. The qualitative methodology used has been a case study that has had the techniques of participant observation and focus group to collect information and behaviors from the ten participants in the game. The Street Escape has been done with two groups, one representing the teenage public and the other representing the youth public, since the tourist and didactic offer of Colonia Güell is insufficient to respond to the needs of young public. Afterwards, the conceptualization, design and evaluation of the Street Escape in Colonia Güell has been carried out. Finally, the results obtained show that the creation of a gamified mediation strategy helps to bring industrial heritage closer to young people.

Resumen
The use of ICT as a resource for the treatment of heritage manifestations in the classroom represents an advance in terms of taking advantage of the potential of heritage as an educational resource and, without doubt, in terms of greater accessibility to it. In this line, the work presented here focuses on the use of ICT to work on intangible heritage in the classroom from a didactic inno- vation within the framework of the initial training of teachers, in which a total of 54 students from the subject of Didactics of Social Sciences: History in the Degree in Primary Education of the Uni- versity of Alicante. This innovation consisted in developing a virtual museum focused on various manifestations of intangible cultural heritage, thus contributing, from the field of education, to its dissemination and promotion, as stated in Law 10/2015 for the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (“Ley 10/2015, de 26 de mayo, para la salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial”, 2015). Therefore, from the creation of this virtual museum in the classroom, and from the propo- sals made by the students to work on this type of heritage content, the use of ICT as a tool for the development of resources and didactic proposals focused on the treatment of manifestations of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the primary education stage. In this way, the work is connected, in turn, to the training of future teachers in regard to digital teaching skills. In light of the results, it reveals a divergence between the manipulative use of digital resources and their applicability when working with them in the classroom, since the participants show advanced digital skills when de- veloping their own creations, which contrasts with the scarce presence of educational technologies in the design of specific didactic proposals.

Design has proved to be a discipline deeply connected to our daily lives. Its identification as a cultural heritage element is undeniable due to its wide-ranging values. In this sense, the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona has been promoting this artistic field since its creation in 2008. This museum has a relevant social and cultural function as it is the only design museum in Spain. Furthermore, the museum also stands out because of its innovative pedagogical programmes pointed to scholars, university students, families and groups of people with accessibility problems. The aim of this article is to present the Musseu del Disseny de Barcelona from an educational perspective, paying attention to its staff members, facilities, programmes and assessment. The 2018 museum annual report results are an example of its success. In order to accomplish this study, the authors have recently interviewed in-depth some members of the pedagogical team (Serveis Educatius).

AbstractThe research herein shows the absence of an orderly repository of the garments worn at the show arts environment, rituals, and festive acts in the Peruvian context. Consequently, the gap between the object and the spectator broadens regardless of several events carried out in a face-to-face manner. The typical costume, as part of the intangible material cultural heritage of the dances, rites, and festivities of a city, evolves and transforms over time due to different factors. A digital repository that captures the essence of the costume and its evolution is necessary to connect and link with the cultural object. In this sense, based on the characteristics defined in the Ux Honeycomb, the research proposes to determine the interaction between these characteristics in a digital costume repository to generate value to the community. In order to achieve the objectives, a review of the literature was made, as well as an analysis of digital repositories and interviews with experts, professionals, and students of creative careers. From the interaction, produced by the internal and external force, of two or more values mentioned above the utility of the digital repository is generated. The relationships and interactions between the elements bring functionality and vitality to the repository. Keywords: Costumes repository, value, cultural heritage, user experience, web design.

Resumen
In the context of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the world of cultural heritage has had to cope with the closures of museums and dedicated structures. In this dramatic context, the digitisation of assets represented a partial solution to guarantee the fruition of the world’s cultural heritage. Even in the context of teaching, the pandemic represented a challenging moment. This contribution presents three different university teaching experiences focused on lighting for cultural heritage. The workshops described were held before, on horseback, and amid the pandemic. The differences are contextualised in the Italian regulatory and methodological framework. Attention is also paid to the digitisation of assets regarding the lighting design verification of the students’ project proposals. The teaching approach, the procedures, the material presented by the students, and the revision methodology are described. The comparison between the three editions allows for evaluations of the main problems encountered in the different contexts and when the used procedures were instead strong points. The use of three-dimensional simulation, initially designed exclusively for lighting verification, has also proved crucial in the communication of students’ works, demonstrating once more that in the future, the information technologies will be able to help those who deal with cultural assets to expand the catchment area and to enhance the communication of sites and museum structures.

Abstract: This paper aims to summarize the first steps of “La Casa de las Luces” (The House of Lights), a cultural project intended to emphasize the rich heritage, both cultural and natural, of Titaguas and its environment. The impulse of this initiative by the town hall, is to enrich the cultural life of the village, while also revitalizing a quality tourism that would benefit the development and welfare of the region of La Serranía. The headquarters of the center –traditionally known as “Casa del Tío Florencio” – is a construction from the mid-18th century, of great historical and ethnological value. The building is currently in the process of rehabilitation, and this project guarantees its conservation and opening to the public. The information in its interior will give a special role to Simón de Rojas Clemente (1777-1827), a key figure of the Enlightenment and first Liberalism in Valencia, and notorious citizen of Titaguas. Through the biography of this remarkable botanist, the universal values of the Enlightenment and the local culture and natural wealth described in his works will be revisited, along with the historical and political events of his time, of which he was an exceptional witness. In terms of experience, we show here the peculiarities of the project, the objectives of its design and the advantages and disadvantages that arise during the establishment of a newly created center like this. Resumen
The first synthetic polymers were introduced as constituents of everyday life, design objects, and artworks at the end of the 19th century. Since then, the history of design has been strictly connected with the 20th century evolution of plastic materials. Objects of design from the 20th century are today a precious part of the cultural heritage. They raise specific conservation issues due to the degradation processes affecting synthetic polymer-based plastics. Museums and collections dealing with the conservation of design objects and modern materials need to base their conservation strategies on compositional data that reveal the formulations of historical plastics and their decay processes. Specific and specifically optimized analytical tools are thus needed. We employed flash analytical pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and evolved gas analysis coupled with mass spectrometry (EGA-MS) to characterize “historic polymeric materials” (HIPOMS) and heritage plastics at the molecular level with high chemical detail. This approach complements non-invasive spectroscopic diagnosis whenever it fails to obtain significant or complete information on the nature and the state of preservation of the materials under study. We determined the composition of several 20th century design objects (1954–1994) from the Triennale Design Museum of Milan (Triennale Milano - Museo del Design Italiano), which for different morphological, chemical, or physical reasons were unsuitable for characterization by non-invasive spectroscopy. EGA-MS proved capable for the study of the different fractions constituting heterogeneous micro-samples and for gaining an insight into their degradation processes from the contextual interpretation of thermal and mass-spectrometric data.

Resumen
Premise. The essay will report on actions promoted at international and national level, to ensure accessibility in different sectors of social life and reduce obstacles in this field in European regulations and in the practices of Member States. The Convention adopted by UNO in 2006, stating that people with different abilities must enjoy fundamental rights and (political, economic, social, cultural) freedoms, constitutes the first great treaty of the twenty-first century concerning the change in attitude and strategies towards people bearing handicaps, to increase respect of their dignity through every possible measure. Intercultural dialogue. In light of a greater awareness on environmental issues and possible solutions, we are, therefore, all called upon to contribute to changes in the relation with our one and only Planet in order to build a new conservation ethics, which may include the values of Cultural Heritage and accept, for its protection and enhancement, the contribution of Communities, favouring intercultural dialogue. Best practices. The essay intends to stress the importance of integrated policies in promoting accessibility and the enhancement of cultural heritage, also through the examination of the best practices implemented in different European Countries. Specifically, it shall highlight how one of the criteria informing the Management Plan of the ‘Archaeological Area of Pompeii and Torre del Greco’ is based on the conservation of the archaeological heritage, with the purpose of making it accessible to the public while conserving the testimonial, formal and material features of the site, and addressing conservation issues as well as the design quality of accessibility improvements. Integrated Conservation. The quality of conservation and restoration interventions on cultural heritage will, therefore, have to be perfected through an aware fact-finding analysis, favouring the application of scientific and digital technologies, paired with a diagnostic approach capable of including the digitalisation of processes, energy efficiency, accessibility, leading to the digital management of anamnesis and control of the restoration project, based on adequate knowledge of the cultural property and its state of conservation.

Resumen
Egypt is among one of the world’s richest countries in the diverse architectural heritage resulting from the various civilizations that have arisen on the land of Egypt. However, the architectural heritage in Egypt suffers from multiple problems represented in the poor handling of the heritage site and the lack of protection for those sites. Which lead to the deterioration of the situation of some sites, and with the technological advances that the world is witnessing today in all spheres of life. Virtual Heritage Technology is emerging as one of the solutions that can be used in heritage sites in Egypt. This is one of the latest and most innovative technologies for the virtual environment, which is emerging as an integral part of it, and it is the reconstruction of historical sites as they were at the beginning of their construction. This depends on re-documentation of architectural buildings and heritage sites in detail through 3D models and holographic drawings. It also depends on many techniques and one of those that are often used in the applications of the virtual heritage are augmented reality technology, which is used to reconstruct archaeological sites in the site, by using tools or devices that support that technology, whether from portable smartphones or through devices that are worn like glasses and contact lenses. The virtual heritage technology offers many advantages to heritage sites, where it is considered historically as a digital documentation process for heritage which ensures that the artistic and historical value of buildings and heritage sites are preserved. It can also be used in the process of restoration of buildings; in addition to economic assistance in further enhancing heritage sites that attracts many tourists and visitors, which gives them the possibility to view the history of archaeological sites interactively; allowing them the sensory and intellectual integration with the site and this contributes to obtain historical information. This research will examine the possibility of utilizing the technology of virtual heritage through its application in the heritage sites in Egypt and the cultural and economic impact of the use of such technology on heritage sites. In addition, some virtual design cases will be discussed for heritage sites around the world and a SWOT analysis would be made to exemplify the challenges and discuss how they may be addressed. These examples are then presented to demonstrate how to deal with some of the difficulties, taking into account the arrival of proposals and recommendations that can be used and applied in Egypt.

Resumen
Cultural heritage preservation is a crucial topic for our society. When dealing with fine art, color is a primary feature that encompasses much information related to the artwork’s conservation status and to the pigments’ composition. As an alternative to more sophisticated devices, the analysis and identification of color pigments may be addressed via a digital camera, i.e., a non-invasive, inexpensive, and portable tool for studying large surfaces. In the present study, we propose a new supervised approach to camera characterization based on clustered data in order to address the homoscedasticity of the acquired data. The experimental phase is conducted on a real pictorial dataset, where pigments are grouped according to their chromatic or chemical properties. The results show that such a procedure leads to better characterization with respect to state-of-the-art methods. In addition, the present study introduces a method to deal with organic pigments in a quantitative visual approach.

Resumen
The consequences of the coronavirus pandemic are and will continue to be devastating for the tourism sector, especially for the cultural one. It is necessary to reflect on the new strategies to be adopted to deal with the heavy losses that the world of cultural heritage is suffering. The great archaeological attractions will no longer be able to accommodate the prepandemic numbers and therefore we must also think of alternative routes to present the minor heritage of our country. In recent years, our experience has allowed us to realize an open-air museum project in bioarchaeological sites (archaeological cemetery areas characterized by the recovery of human remains) that are part of an archaeological heritage that is little known, but which reserve great dissemination and fruition potential. The design of an archaeological itinerary, even a virtual one, which includes the bioarchaeological sites that we are musealizing, could offer a new visiting experience, especially in this difficult moment for all of us.

Resumen
This study describes the improvement of a science curriculum based on a social constructivist approach in order to support primary students in a Confucian heritage culture in practicing scientific argumentation. The former design is adjusted by the application of an adapted model of the learning placemat for argumentation and by the formulation of concrete teaching-learning activities which are articulated with the application of the adapted learning placemat. The practice of a designed curriculum unit reveals that the designed curriculum can support the primary students in practicing scientific argumentation and in attaining consensually agreed knowledge. Nevertheless, the study also shows that primary teachers and students in a Confucian heritage culture do not pay much attention to the activities of qualifying and rebutting in scientific argumentation. The study recommends that further developmental research needs to deal with the refined problem of how to improve qualifying and rebutting in scientific argumentation in the practice of science lessons in a Confucian heritage culture.

Resumen
Purpose The M’Hamid Oasis is the last of the palm groves in the Drâa Valley, in Southern Morocco. The 13 villages (ksar/ksour in Arabic) in M’Hamid share many sociological, urban, and architectural similarities with the ksour located in the pre-Saharan valleys. These similarities range from environmental threats, such as extreme climate, to the current social and economic model. As a result, the settlements are being abandoned, and the tangible and intangible heritage of the Drâa Valley is in a progressive disappearance. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach To deal with the complexity of this problem, a progressive approach beginning at the territorial scale must be developed. In this regard, a lasting solution can be found only by promoting development that integrates nature, culture, and architecture, as well as by finding a new balance of these elements within the current social and economic requirements. Findings This paper presents part of the research conducted by the team of the Terrachidia Association, which allows an overall understanding of the place. To this aim, the new social and economic context of the Drâa Valley is pointed out, as well as the characteristic features of M’Hamid architecture and urbanism. In this regard, the principles and requirements of its conservation are presented, and the project of the Terrachidia Association is also described. Finally, the project’s impact is assessed and the results of the set of interventions are evaluated. Practical implications Since 2012, the activity of the Terrachidia Association has focussed on the study, promotion, preservation, and restoration of the architectural and cultural heritage of M’Hamid. The main activity of the association focusses on the organization of workshops, which are attended mainly by university students and professionals from around the world. Social implications In total, 13 workshops were organized since 2012, thanks to the engagement of the local population. In this period, around 300 participants from more than 15 different countries attended these workshops, working with approximately a 100 local craftsmen. All of them share a similar commitment to the work that Terrachidia is developing. These workshops allow the participants to know places and people in a way hardly achievable through conventional tourism. At the same time, this awareness is also achieved in the local population, and cultural exchange strengthens its identity. Originality/value The purpose of the workshops organized by Terrachidia is manifold, and the participants actively take part in the restoration works while they interact and exchange experiences with a reality that is generally unknown in western societies. The local population also benefits from this cultural exchange by strengthening their identity, which is linked to architecture, and demonstrating the economic possibilities of conservation through responsible tourism. And these aims are achieved through a self-managed project, which benefits all involved.

Resumen
The process of digitisation of the artistic and cultural heritage has enriched the possibilitiesof representation and communication of architecture, increasing the modes of reproduction, fruition as well as the possibilities of protection and preservation. The study of this researchdraws attention on the continuous progress of technology in the cultural fi eld and highlightsthe important collaboration that exists between digital and analog representation, identifying, with this synergy, a virtuous path that allows, through the use of different methodologies, tobe able to know and analyze the historical phases of a building. In particular, the attentionwas directed to the Caltanissetta Centrale station, a signifi cant junction of the Sicilian railwaynetwork both for the connection of the island and for the sulfur trade. With its late modernism, the station under study is part of the story of Art Nouveau stations in Sicily, and it becomes awitness to economic and social changes in the region, thus making itself an asset to be protectedand disseminated. Through the study of iconographic documents, historical photos, and graphicanalysis it was possible to retrace, through a backward process from the laser scanning survey tothe study of photographic restitution, the main historical phases that characterised the evolutionand extension of the factory. Through such 3D graphic representations, it was also possible toreproduce the characteristics of the building and highlight the changes that occurred over timeand the evident divergences that existed between the building and the original design idea.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of contemporary architecture in heritage protection, reinterpretation and reuse, an issue that has become increasingly relevant due to the recognition of architectural heritage as a key factor for cultural and economic development. Design/methodology/approach In Portugal, as elsewhere in Europe, cultural heritage management has often been associated with the creation of new museum spaces, namely, within national monuments and archaeological sites. Drawing on restoration theories and international charters, this paper analyses and compares two parallel interventions recently built inside São Jorge Castle, in Lisbon: the Museum Centre (Victor Mestre and Sofia Aleixo, 2007-2008) and the Archaeological Site (João Luís Carrilho da Graça, 2008-2010). This approach offers insight on the complexity of addressing and reconfiguring the profusion of past transformations within a single monument. Findings These two complementary museum spaces are representative of different attitudes towards heritage appropriation, substantiating the thesis that musealizing always entails the creation of narratives, which translate history and heritage into architectural and curatorial discourses. Besides meeting the functional requirements of specific museum programmes, such interventions frequently deal with the challenge of opening up new perspectives on the past. Originality/value Considering the central role of communication in contemporary museums, this paper discusses how heritage musealization can contribute to the translation of historical evidence into updated iconographies, narratives and dialogues. Furthermore, the unique characteristics of this twofold case study can provide an insightful contribution for a broader debate on the reinterpretation of iconic monuments and sites.

Resumen
The preservation of cultural heritage structures includes, among others, an efficient fire protection design process. This engineering design process frequently generates critical decision making issues related to conflicts that involve the buildings’ authenticity preservation, the implementation of special fire protection measures and addressing the particular needs of such structures. However, conventional approaches based on prescriptive regulations are often problematic in such cases; on the contrary, Performance-Based (PB) approaches could successfully deal with such structures to deliver designs that satisfy an acceptable fire safety level, and at the same time minimize the cost and any interventions on the building’s appearance, to the extent that authenticity is a key demand. Thus, in this study the upgrade of the fire safety level of cultural heritage structures is expressed as a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problem. Accordingly, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is incorporated into a new fire protection Selection and Resource (S&R) allocation model, aiming to assess both fire safety and authenticity preservation levels with reference to the protection measures selected. Furthermore, in this study two different multi-criteria optimization approaches are applied to generate optimized solutions of the fire safety upgrading scheme. In this first part of the study, the theoretical basis of the proposed S&R allocation model that relies on a MCDM problem and how to deal with is discussed, while in the second part the implementation of the proposed model is presented for two real-world test cases. More specifically, in this study the theoretical part of the multi-objective and the multi-disciplinary problems (belonging to the MCDM type of problems) is provided with respect to the problems’ description and the methods adopted for solving the corresponding problems.

Resumen
This research involved during a first phase a market study of the implementation of a tourist package in the Suscal County, province of Cañar, Ecuador, followed by a second phase, a Comprehensive Feasibility Study of the package. Using bibliographic research and a field tour, we described the package’s commercial potential, technical, environmental, social, administrative, legal, economic, financial aspects. The study of tourism potential in the area identified the richness of an intangible cultural heritage, the existence of an ancestral collective memory alive in every community, and natural attractions of level I and II. The market study identified acceptance of the tourism package by 84% of domestic tourists and interest among 67% of foreign tourists, whose service whose preferences are: accommodation, food, cultural experience, transportation and information. Depending on the tourist profile, we will define and plan the technical design of tourism infrastructure and will conduct feasibility studies on legal, environmental and economic-financial aspects that will appear in a second phase of the project. Despite its great potential, tourism in the province of Cañar has not achieved an optimal level, as reflected in the minimal fraction of GDP in cultural tourism, which in 2011 was 0.26% (MCPEC, 2011:22), much lower than the national level. In Suscal County, this activity currently generates no income, but interest is recently being generated, while this study illustrates the potential of cultural tourism.

Resumen
We analyze the potential to generate critical collaborative and pedagogical practices from Design, which contribute to processes of community artistic and cultural development in contexts of marginal, informal and peripheral urbanism with respect to production centers. We start from the experience of joint work since 2016 between a faculty of fine arts and a nearby self-construction neighborhood; Las Moraditas de Taco, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The evidence that "professors are fed up with the classrooms spaces and students lack more experiences in the streets" joins the neighborhood claim; "we live on a mountain but nobody sees us", to explore models of living labs for creation and service-learning, in the recovery and valorization of collective memory, intangible cultural heritage, sense of belonging, dignity and beautification of public space or the external projection of positive values. Special attention is paid to designers’ emerging roles and competencies, such as facilitator, catalyst or mediator. We highlight the relevance of adopting methodological frameworks based on participatory action-research, thus reorienting the traditional, institutional and top-down culture project, towards iterative process cultures of citizen innovation, from which to generate, stimulate and root transformations within the community and the territory.

Purpose – Heritage housing in inner city areas represents a valuable cultural asset that belongs, in part, to the community as a whole. Despite this, the risk of destruction by fire in closely spaced heritage housing has not received a great deal of research attention. The purpose of this paper is to identify potential faults in building fabric that may result in unacceptable fire safety risks to irreplaceable heritage streetscapes. Design/methodology/approach – This paper examines a sample of publically administered heritage houses in inner Sydney. A condition survey looks at the occurrence of noted defects, or non-compliances to the current building regulations, in fire separation between attached or closely spaced occupancies. Findings – Fire spread between adjacent buildings is identified as a potential hazard which needs to be addressed in order to ensure both the sustainability of the remaining heritage housing stock and the safety of the occupants. Research limitations/implications – While the survey is small, it represents a significant proportion of a dwindling stock of nineteenth century heritage housing in public ownership in Sydney. Practical implications – Based on the results of the survey, a recommendation has been made in regard to improving building surveying practice when dealing with renovation of heritage housing. Social implications – Concern over the diminishing availability of social housing in inner city locations indicates the need for more attention to the fire safety of the remaining stock. Originality/value – The research provides original data on the level of fire safety risk in a regional cluster of heritage housing.

Resumen
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce and develop a knowledge base for the restoration industry to understand and deal with risks arising in restoration projects in a sustainable way. Restoration projects face a number of risks and are viewed unfavorably. The research study, therefore, is expected to generate interest and debate among the professional and researcher community in the arena of restoration of built cultural heritage for formally applying Project Management (PM) and Project Risk management (PRM) theories and practices. Design/methodology/approach – The research method consists of reviewing published literature and analyzing the dynamics of restoration industry (both from academic and practitioner point of view) in order to propose an application framework. Building upon and taking inspiration from the fundamentals of Construction Management, the proposed framework aims at methodically applying risk management within the proposed PM stages. Findings – Research results confirm that the restoration industry has not yet exposed to formal PM and PRM theories and practices to a greater level. The restoration projects are not necessarily so sustainable in their approach. Thus, there is enormous impetus and ensuing incentive for incorporating the formal theories and customized tools. Research limitations/implications – This research attempts to target the exceedingly important area of cultural heritage restoration and the missing aspect of PM and PRM. Further, the proposed framework is an attempt at bridging communication gaps between management and restoration experts. Thus, it highlights the importance of scientifically and effectively managing restoration projects. Nevertheless, this uniting attempt has its own risks in terms of terminologies, technical language, and the understanding of risk and its management which may be the effective limitations. Since in the field of engineering as well, the foundation of PM and PRM areas of knowledge finds its traces in Construction Management – which is further an application of management in construction engineering – therefore, it is rather challenging to reconcile knowledge from different areas. Practical implications – The paper explores issues concerning sustainability of restoration projects based on their use of PM and PRM. Results are expected to help stakeholders of restoration projects understand and apply the proposed PRM framework. This study is also aimed to develop a foundation for dissemination of PM and PRM knowledge in the restoration industry, and provide an impetus for future studies to examine how restoration projects can deal with risky situations. Social implications – The paper explores the sustainable development aspects of restoration projects in order to help stakeholders of built cultural heritage make critical decisions because if not managed properly, risks in a restoration project may either cause project failure or damage the historical buildings. Therefore, from a sustainable perspective, it is imperative that stakeholders identify, analyze, control and manage risks before commencing the restoration activities. Originality/value – The study is an original effort in examining the penetration of PM and PRM practices in restoration industry. Based on it, the study proposes an original framework for application of formal PRM for restoration projects. Results are of relevance in today's world where risks hinder and sustainability guides the decision making.

Resumen
Purpose – This paper aims to argue that one of the ways of enabling tourism to become sustainable is for archaeologists to relate archaeology to poverty, while being aware of the process of heritage production. It proposes that one way to engage with issues of poverty is to talk to people who are trying to get out of poverty. Many archaeologists are already at work using a similar perspective not just to integrate international scholarship with local interests, but to hand over authority relating to aspects of research to the local community. Design/methodology/approach – This paper reviews literature about and archaeological study in the Bolivian Amazon region. Here, all-weather roads are scarce and unreliable. Scholars are beginning to document and analyze the archaeological record of this region, and as lowland Bolivians develop tourism, the article considers how archaeology could help connect the Bolivian Amazon to an international audience. Findings – An anthropological perspective suggests that projects in which local people are connected to decision-making will have long-term effects. Without such integration, cycles of boom and bust are likely to repeat. The article cites two examples: the inscription of the Ichapekene Piesta Moxos on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the Museo Yacuma, in Santa Ana del Yacuma. Community archaeology, in which the community makes decisions about how research will proceed, is a developing trend, which stands to benefit local people, archaeologists and tourists. Originality/value – The paper outlines how community archaeology in the Beni region of Bolivia can be built on a strong foundation: first, by a community of Benianos that are ready, willing and able to be a part of both the development of tourism and of archaeology and second, via its long and varied archaeological record, providing plenty of material for the development of heritage. The question is whether a community archaeology can generate and sustain archaeological heritage as part of a tourism industry?

Resumen
Abstract Recent years paved the way for progress focused on maximising the financial and political profits, leading in consequence to a social and economic crisis and environmental disasters. In response to those negative impacts, the concept of sustainable development appeared, understood as the need to improve life quality at the same time retaining social balance, bio-diversity of species and the variety of natural resources. A society that is active and has a full awareness of those issues will play a major role in sustainable development. On one hand, it will control the impacts the economy has on the environment, whilst on the other, the condition of the social capital guarantees the continuity of the progress envision and planning of its implementation. Protection of old underground sites is in line with the principles of sustainable development. Well preserved underground sites opened to visitors are a part of the cultural heritage, ensuring that historic, cultural , natural and utility values are maintained. Recently a great deal of attention has been given to revival and revitalisation of old historical underground sites and giving them a new function. Revitalisation and preservation of old abandoned excavations is a most complicated process aimed at restoring the functional utility of abandoned or disused infrastructure. Practical design should envision activities well in line with natural processes. Underground sites being preserved and adapted have to be visitor - friendly and acceptable, being a vital component of cultural heritage viewed in the context of sustainable development. Engineering problems involve not only the practical application of science, but also the way the world is defined. That is why the social and even spiritual aspects of revitalisation projects are recalled: recreation of human interactions with the nature and with the entire surroundings. Underground tourist routes should be harmonised with land development in the area and the residence patterns that have emerged over centuries. Well - preserved and protected excavations are the relics of the past, are part of the cultural heritage and become a rich source of knowledge about history.

Resumen
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore possible contributions of natural resources for the historic urban landscape (HUL) approach. It points to several possible avenues for collaborative research, which can expand the discourse on the topic of urban sustainability with different disciplines of heritage studies, natural resource management, urban planning and disaster risk reduction. Design/methodology/approach – There are already several UNESCO initiatives such as the Man and Biosphere Programme, World Heritage Forests Programme and the World Heritage Programme for Small Island Developing States, which the HUL approach can learn from to understand approaches that integrate natural resource management in urban planning methods. Different cases from the USA, Japan and Singapore applying landscape approaches have also been documented in this research. Findings – Several examples have been found in which natural resources are integrated to bigger strategies of urban planning. Japan has enacted the “Landscape Law” in 2004 to highlight the importance of preserving landscapes in improving the quality and viability of community life. The “Mauritius Strategy” created by small island developing states is another example. It holistically looks at policies to deal with environmental challenges while advocating economic growth and protecting cultural and natural heritage, among other concerns. The long tradition of creating greenways in the USA have also contributed in presenting heritage assets and providing environmental benefits. The High Line in New York City is a good example of this. Originality/value – In line with the HUL approach, the research points out possibilities of non-traditional collaborations in solving current urban challenges. Finding ways of linking natural resources to a bigger urban framework can inspire new solutions for the interlinked problems of urban growth, heritage management and nature conservation amidst climate change.

The outcomes of identity studies as they are presented to architectural designers most frequently appear as pieces of information which ignore the findings of psychology of art. Denotative characteristics take precedence over cultural ideas and connotations appealing to those parts of the designer's consciousness which deal with sociocultural memory and cultural identity. On the example of the garden and park ensemble in Lentvaris (Lithuania), in the composition of which the idea of the Earthly Paradise, which is significant for Christian culture, is manifested, it is shown how information about the protected complex can be supplemented with connotation characteristics.

Resumen
Abstract. In the Mediterranean scenery of the south-western Iberian Peninsula, vineyards and wine-making have consistently been key pieces of the man-made cultural landscape, influencing urban design and even housing. This paper compares wine production influence in the cities of Borba, in Portuguese Alentejo, Jerez de la Frontera and Bollullos Par del Condado, in Spanish Andalusia, throughout the spheres of territorial organization, urban layout, presence of production buildings inside urban areas, and winemaker and wineworker housing. The study is based on architectonic surveys of building types: wineries, dwellings and houses with integrated wine production on both sides of the Guadiana River. The information gathered in surveys is complemented with data from historical documents, such as transaction records from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The research analyses cycles of prosperity for the three case studies – which are often coincident and related, within the frame of pre-industrial global trade – and the effects of those in winery and housing typologies. Across the studied area, vernacular winery types adhere to the same two categories, or typological lines, of building: the domestic winery and the autonomous building. Wine related architecture is still a key asset in these cities' material and cultural heritage, as it provides scale and uniqueness to the urban and rural ensembles, despite the fact that wine production has been removed from cities’ centres to outer industrial wineries. The memory of wine-induced prosperity is imprinted on the cities’ physical realities, giving meaning to their collective memories and proving to be an asset to future development.

Resumen
Indonesia is famous for its diversity of tourism among tourist destinations in Indonesia, some of which have been recognized by UNESCO as included in the list of world cultural heritage sites, such as the Borobudur Temple. The problem that has occurred so far is the lack of concern from millennials towards Borobudur Temple as a tourist attraction marked by a low interest in visiting (Dimyati, 2019). Various efforts have been made, including collaborating with travel bloggers and influencers assisted by Indonesian digital agencies. Its role is to give a good impression of a tourist destination in Indonesia so that it can attract interest to visit, especially the millennial generation (Bernadiaz, 2021). Efforts to increase the interest in traveling to world heritage sites by millennials through various strategies that have been carried out require an empirical explanation of the signification of the results obtained; this study aims to explain the factors that influence millennial behavior in traveling, especially millennial responses to Borobudur Temple tourism objects. Various studies discussing individual behavior towards World Heritage Site (WHS) tourist destinations have been conducted a lot. Some that can be put forward here include Halpeny et al. (2018); Mehmood et al. (2018); See and Goh (2019); Rio et al. (2020); Carreira et al. (2021); Deb and Lomo-David (2021); and Xu et al. (2021). However, there is no universal model explaining travel behavior in all situations and conditions, including cultural tourism at Borobudur Temple. This is what provides an opportunity in this study to design a model that explains explicitly the phenomenon of individual behavior, which is millennials traveling at Borobudur Temple. <p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The twenty-year and interdisciplinary research activity carried out by Virtualgeo has focused on the development of new methods and tools for 3D modeling that go beyond the simple digital-virtual reconstruction of solid modelling, in order to realize three-dimensional informative and photogrammetric representations that faithfully reproduce reality. These so called Advanced 3D models are the basis for carrying out metrological investigations to support the design and the BIM database population. In particular, in this paper we will deal with the segmentation tool, which allows the classification of the photogrammetric 3D model (material, degradation and chronological features). In detail, we will illustrate the collaboration experience between Virtualgeo and the University of Trieste, course in Technologies for the conservation and enhancement of architectural heritage of the Master's Degree in Architecture. The experience focused on the study of the archaeological site of the Roman river port of Aquileia, which Advanced 3D model was supplied by Virtualgeo. Firstly, the work focused on the informative contents necessary for the subsequent elaborations (different types of materials, alteration/degradation forms), starting from the use of coded lexicons (UNI 11182/2006). Subsequently, the quantitative data were associated to each category of homogeneous elements, obtainable from the segmentation (“mapping”) of the 3D model. This experience gave the chance to test the EasyCUBE PRO software: it was gradually adapted to the specific needs emerged both during the analysis of the site and the definition of conservation interventions, so as the outputs that can be generated after the elaboration of the Advanced 3D model.</p>

Resumen
The study focuses on the language use of Bangladeshi graduates and how they deal with the local Bengali language with English as an international language. The study investigates whether the perception of ELP promotes identity transmission or transgression. The study is conducted with a mixed-method approach using a triangulation research design with a convergence model. Questionnaire data were collected from 370 respondents consisting of three groups of graduates according to educational qualifications, income level, and living places. The findings indicate that ELP may be disadvantageous to the local culture and results in the use of mixed languages. The results suggest that ELP accelerates a form of language and cultural transgression that reshapes personality and erodes the traditional local culture and heritage language identity among Bangladeshi graduates.

English Abstract: How do societies value and interact with ecosystem services (ES) to favor their long-term conservation? Under the premise that sociocultural assessment of ES offers an expanded perspective for potential societal nature contributions, we present here the empirical results of a participative assessment of ES in the Laguna de Nuxco coastal wetland in 2019. The methodological design includes the combination of applied qualitative tools on site and quantitative methods for analysis of information. The results emphasize that the ES of the wetland support socioeconomic needs and important socio-cultural community traits, such as cultural heritage and identity as fishing communities. We identify emerging socio-ecological conflicts that promote the decrease of ES. We suggest conceptual and methodological adaptations for the participative assessment of ES on the local scaleSpanish Abstract: ¿Cómo las sociedades valoran e interactúan con los servicios ecosistémicos (SE) que les rodean para favorecer su conservación a largo plazo? Tourism is a cultural phenomenon. It both impacts cultures and society, and is shaped by cultures and society. There is a deep influence of tourists and tourism on host country. Tourism is genuinely powerful and unique force for change in the community. Tourist impact has been most noticeable in lesser developed countries but is not entirely restricted to them. The cultural impact of tourism is concerned with the question of protecting and maintaining the cultural heritage and certain allied issues.
AbstractThe introduction of the concept of entropy in architecture has brought to light the tight bond that exists between the degradation of energy and the degradation of matter, shifting the focus to the daily energy consumption of a building during its lifespan, as well as to the cost, in energy terms, of constructing —or repairing— that particular building. In short, it has given way to two different approaches to understanding the impact of construction on the environment. The first approach refers to the kind of architecture that uses free energies generated from an efficient use of climate variables as a design tool. The second approach refers to the kind of architecture that, in its different variants, chooses to restore built heritage. The purpose of this article is to hybridise these two approaches to the impact of construction on the environment by examining architectural intervention on built heritage through the lens of thermodynamic principles. To this end we will review two contemporary interventions that have paradigmatically transformed old industrial buildings into new cultural premises. Far from applying standard intervention criteria, largely based on architectural language, context or programme, these restoration works follow design premises that are founded on energy exchanges with the neighbouring environment, and that are open to change. In a way, both exemplify how architecture can be understood as a “dialectics of entropic change”, as coined by Robert Smithson. From a stance of material and conceptual dualism that blurs the lines between past and present, energy and memory, both interventions generate memorable images. Their outward appearance, based on assemblage, hybridisation and contrast, both in terms of energy, form and matter, ultimately seeks to showcase the tensions and challenges inherent to the passing of time in architecture.

It is necessary to approach the study of non-habitual situations within game design in order to enrich the players’ relationships when playing. The present work shows these non-habitual situations through the strategic development of a triad game the maze as sporting game. Thus, the main contributions were: i) promoting innovative decisions by the players in a triadic game, sometimes with paradoxical situations; overcoming cultural inertia, ii) promoting novel design through a structured procedure. To do this, we rely on two approaches with complementary ingredients: a) play principles and tactical conducts, and b) roles and relationships with players, space and time. The emergence of creativity requires regulated environments to generate adaptive processes. In this sense, the triad is an environment highly conditioned by strategic complexity framed in non-habitual situations. To ensure these non-habitual situations, game design is a useful tool to generate greater quality for motor interactions and for enrich the known play heritage.
