Resumen
Object oriented databases have been gaining popularity over the years. Their ease of use and the advantages that they offer over relational databases have made them a popular choice amongst database administrators. Their use in previous years was restricted to business and administrative applications, but improvements in technology and the emergence of new, data-intensive applications has led to the increase in the use of object databases. This study investigates four Open Source object-oriented databases on their ability to carry out the standard database operations of storing, querying, updating and deleting database objects. Each of these databases will be timed in order to measure which is capable of performing a particular function faster than the other.

Hines, Gary L. "From entities to objects : reverse engineering a relational data model into an object-oriented design". Virtual Press, 2000. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1164846.

Texto completo
Resumen
In many software applications, an object-oriented design (OOD) is generated first, then persistent storage is implemented by mapping the objects to a relational database. This thesis explores the "reverse engineering" of an OOD out of an existing relational data model. Findings from the current literature are presented, and a case study is undertaken using the model and research process published by GENTECH, a nonprofit organization promoting genealogical computing. The model is mapped into an OOD and captured in Unified Modeling Language (UML) class diagrams and object collaboration diagrams. The suitability of the example OOD is evaluated against the GENTECH research process using UML use cases and sequence diagrams. The mapping of relational database designs into OODs is found to be suitable in certain instances.

Texto completo
Resumen
Abstract The technology of constrained databases (CDBs) is employed in the design of structural design databases. To illustrate the application of CDBs in structural design, the following example is considered in some detail: the design of a database for combined stiffener-plate sectional properties. A major drawback of relational database technology (RDBs) for engineering applications is that constraints cannot be processed within the data model. Another major drawback of the relational data model for engineering applications is that it only can incorporate attributes with discrete value set i.e. it cannot represent effectively variables with a continuous range. To remedy this situation, we propose the use of CDBs which are extended RDBs (so that they retain the advantages of RDBs) that can process arithmetic constraints in both relations and queries. CDBs can represent infinite point sets through the respective constraints on variables with a continuous range. We provide the database schema specification and specification for a number of typical queries for the example problem of combined stiffener-plate sectional properties database. We also specify constraints in the data models that model structural stability and manufacturing constraints.

Resumen
When we think on initiatives on access to and reuse of data, we must consider both the European Intellectual Property Law and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The first one provides a special intellectual property (IP) right – the sui generis right – for those makers that made a substantial investment when creating the database, whether it contains personal or non-personal data. That substantial investment can be made by just one person, but, in many cases, it is the result of the activities of many people and/or some undertakings processing and aggregating data. In the modern digital economy, data are being dubbed the ‘new oil’ and the sui generis right might be con- sidered a right to control any access to the database, thus having an undeniable relevance. Besides, there are still important inconsistences between IP Law and the GDPR, which must be removed by the European legislator. The genuine and free consent of the data subject for the use of his/her data must remain the first step of the legal analysis.
