Resumen
Using data from an obsolescent dialect situation in northern France, this paper questions the view that dedialectalization is a process of level-by-level attrition which leaves a linguistic residue in Regional French (the ‘Structured Obsolescence Hypothesis’). Comparison of dialect index scores for a number of variables reveals significant variation in rates of attrition within levels, with some phonological and morphological variants showing greater vitality than others, but no consistent relationship between levels as the model would predict. An alternative model is proposed, based on the relative learnability of different variants, and it is further argued that rejection of the Structured Obsolescence Hypothesis calls some other assumptions about Regional French into question, notably the view that it can be considered an intermediate variety between dialect and standard, and that it is necessarily ephemeral in nature.

Resumen
Product obsolescence occurs in the manufacturing industry as new products with better performance or improved cost-effectiveness are developed. A proactive strategy for predicting component obsolescence can reduce manufacturing losses and lead to customer satisfaction. In this study, we propose a machine learning algorithm for a proactive strategy based on an adaptive data selection method to forecast the obsolescence of electronic diodes. Typical machine learning algorithms construct a single model for a dataset. By contrast, the proposed algorithm first determines a mathematical cover of the dataset via unsupervised clustering and subsequently constructs multiple models, each of which is trained with the data in one cover. For each data point in the test dataset, an optimal model is selected for regression. Results of empirical experiments show that the proposed method improves the obsolescence prediction accuracy and accelerates the training procedure. A novelty of this study is that it demonstrates the effectiveness of unsupervised clustering methods for improving supervised regression algorithms.

Resumen
BackgroundPrimary biodiversity records (PBR) are essential in many areas of scientific research as they document the biodiversity through time and space. However, concerns about PBR quality and fitness-for-use have grown, especially as derived from taxonomical, geographical and sampling effort biases. Nonetheless, the temporal bias stemming from data ageing has received less attention. We examine the effect of changes in land use in the information currentness, and therefore data obsolescence, in biodiversity databases.MethodsWe created maps of land use changes for three periods (1956–1985, 1985–2000 and 2000–2012) at 5-kilometres resolution. For each cell we calculated the percentage of land use change within each period. We then overlaid distribution data about small mammals, and classified each data as ‘non-obsolete or ‘obsolete,’ depending on both the amount of land use changes in the cell, and whether changes occurred at or after the data sampling’s date.ResultsA total of 14,528 records out of the initial 59,677 turned out to be non-obsolete after taking into account the changes in the land uses in Navarra. These obsolete data existed in 115 of the 156 cells analysed. Furthermore, more than one half of the remaining cells holding non-obsolete records had not been visited at least for the last fifteen years.ConclusionLand use changes challenge the actual information obtainable from biodiversity datasets and therefore its potential uses. With the passage of time, one can expect a steady increase in the availability and use of biological records—but not without them becoming older and likely to be obsolete by land uses changes. Therefore, it becomes necessary to assess records’ obsolescence, as it may jeopardize the knowledge and perception of biodiversity patterns.

Resumen
Obsolescence is a significant challenge for the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) community. Obsolescence can negatively affect a C5ISR system’s cost, schedule, performance, and readiness. This article examines the challenge of obsolescence for C5ISR systems by focusing on the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and their industry partners. Data were gathered by conducting interviews with 20 individuals who had experience with C5ISR systems: 10 government Army civilians and 10 industry partner employees. The objective of this study is to synthesize insights from the experiences of government and industry practitioners that mitigate diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortages (DMSMS) challenges. The obsolescence mitigation areas described in this article include proactive and reactive obsolescence mitigation, obsolescence mitigation methods, opportunities for alternative components and planned improvements, the importance of DMSMS contracting language, and obsolescence management practices to avoid. This article also offers approaches grounded in practitioner experiences to mitigate obsolescence through a preliminary proactive obsolescence management model, risk mitigation framework, and metrics. The combination of the obsolescence mitigation approaches discussed in this article has the potential to achieve greater system readiness, more availability, better maintainability, and lower costs for C5ISR systems.

Resumen
Obsolescence is a challenge for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) systems within the Army. These challenges include lower availability of components in the supply chain, schedule delays, and higher costs. Proactive obsolescence management in lieu of reactive obsolescence management is essential to assist with understanding and mitigating obsolescence challenges. This article presents a visualization tool for evaluating the risk of obsolescence to a system’s components. The tool was developed and deployed using the R statistical software program. The visualization tool focuses on the areas of component design life, procurement lead time, cost growth, and the number of manufacturers producing the component. These obsolescence properties are combined in the visualization tool to measure the level of obsolescence risk exposure from the supply availability of the components. The visualization tool was first demonstrated using simulations of 10 systems based on a mix of risk levels with respect to the obsolescence properties. The visualization tool allows a user to input component level data for their system and compare it with two reference systems: the best case when all variables are low risk (i.e., proactive) and the worst case when all variables are high risk (i.e., reactive). The reference systems are included to help practitioners quickly understand their systems level of obsolescence risk from the supply availability of the components. The visualization tool was then validated with publicly available data for a drone and a user study that demonstrated improved accuracy, duration, and confidence in assessing obsolescence risk.

Resumen
Product obsolescence occurs in every production line in the industry as better-performance or cost-effective products become available. A proactive strategy for obsolescence allows firms to prepare for such events and reduces the manufacturing loss, which eventually leads to positive customer satisfaction. We propose a machine learning-based algorithm to forecast the obsolescence date of electronic diodes, which has a limitation on the amount of data available. The proposed algorithm overcomes these limitations in two ways. First, an unsupervised clustering algorithm is applied to group the data based on their similarity and build independent machine-learning models specialized for each group. Second, a hybrid method including several reliable techniques is constructed to improve the prediction accuracy and overcome the limitation of the lack of data. It is empirically confirmed that the prediction accuracy of the obsolescence date for the electrical component data is improved through the proposed clustering-based hybrid method.

Resumen
Identifying defective design elements is a prerequisite for design improvements. Previous identification methods were implemented in the context of static customer requirements (CRs). However, CRs always evolve continuously, which easily leads to a failure of existing product functions in fulfilling customer expectations; this, in turn, can lead to a decline in customer satisfaction. In this study, the phenomenon is termed as ‘function obsolescence’, and a data-driven identification approach for obsolete functions is proposed for design improvements. Firstly, product operating data are employed to construct the observing parameters of functional performance (OPs), and based on the distribution of OPs, the desired level of functional performance (DL) is defined to quantitatively characterise CRs. Secondly, the time series of DL is constructed to embody the evolution of CRs, in which a Sigmoid-like function is employed to establish a dissatisfaction function. With the time series, an obsolescence index measuring the severity of obsolescence for each function is defined to identify obsolete functions. A case study was implemented on a smart phone to identify its obsolete functions to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The results show that some potentially obsolete functions can be identified by the proposed method considering the evolution of CRs.

The prospect of capital obsolescence inhibits investment. Investors thus become more optimistic when the obsolescence of their capital slows down. We propose a model with no fixed costs of investment, and random technological progress that induces obsolescence of capital in place. Spikes occur precisely when technological progress slows down. Moreover, the more variable the progress, the larger are the spikes. Cross-industry data show that where price of capital declines are more variable, investment spikes are larger. Resumen
AbstractPlanned obsolescence can artificially increase sales by stimulating desire or perceived need. This can be done in many ways and some companies are releasing newer models sooner than necessary or engineering the product to fail after a certain amount of use. In recent years, we have observed a change in the pattern of planned obsolescence strategies employed by technological companies, shifting from aesthetic to technological obsolescence. The reaction to this model comes from social enterprises and grassroots movements addressing the circular economy and repairability. This paper illustrates these relationships in context, taking the mobile phone industry as a case study. We focus on product architecture and product features, as a reference point to discuss the embodiment of strategies, and the degree of control the consumer is given for repairing the product. Using netnography as a method to collect data in a digital-mediated environment, this paper highlights how planned obsolescence strategies are embedded in product characteristics and summarises their evolution. It concludes by opposing planned obsolescence strategies to circular economy principles to discuss more sustainable pathways for the smartphone industry.

Resumen
The article proposes a methodology for assessing the functional obsolescence of intellectual property objects based on the use of statistical indicators of the results of intellectual activity. The use of a cost-based approach in the evaluation of intellectual property objects provides for the calculation of the functional obsolescence of such objects. At the same time, due to the atypical nature of the valuation objects and the absence of a formed market for such objects, there has not been a unified approach to reflecting functional obsolescence in assessing the market value of intellectual property objects. It is necessary that the obsolescence assessment be carried out on the basis of data that meets the requirements of accessibility, verifiability and traceability over time. The purpose of the study is to develop a methodology for assessing the functional obsolescence of intellectual property objects based on the use of statistical indicators of the results of intellectual activity and designations of merchandise, works, services and business entities. In the course of the study, an analysis of approaches to assessing the functional obsolescence (depreciation) of intellectual property objects and methods of its calculation was carried out. It is revealed that some of the existing methods are overly simplified and do not reflect the actual functional obsolescence, while others are excessively complex and time–consuming for use in the practical activities of appraisers. A methodology for assessing functional obsolescence (depreciation) based on indicators of the growth rate of intellectual activity results and designations of merchandise, works, services and business entities by their types is proposed. The methodology presented in the article can be used by professional appraisers, as well as specialists of financial and economic services of companies in determining the market value of exclusive and other intellectual property rights. The methodology has been tested in assessing the market value of exclusive rights to integrated circuit topologies.

Resumen
Obsolescence setting in the employees of the organisations significantly hampers the organisational productivity. An empirical investigation of the associated factors and the efforts to minimise them help in designing strategies to deal with obsolescence and maintain optimum effectiveness of the organisation. As an attempt in this direction, the present study aimed at exploring the role of literature-suggested correlates of obsolescence in case of researchers in an Indian government organisation. The sample included 200 participants (146 males and 54 females) working as researchers in government scientific institutions with service experience ranging from two to 30 years. The participants were administered with standardised measures of obsolescence, work engagement, work motivation, resistance to change, organisational climate, human resource management (HRM) Policies and Practices, and Self Esteem. The obtained data were analysed with correlation and regression analyses. The findings revealed that in the target population obsolescence due to both organisational and individual level factors was found significantly and positively correlated with amotivation and resistance to change; whereas, negatively correlated with work engagement, organisational climate, HRM policies and practices, intrinsic motivation, and self-esteem. Regression analyses indicated that adequate recognition of efforts, better training and development, qualitative work availability (pressure), and enhanced concern to optimally maintain the intrinsic motivation and dedication of employees are significant factors for keeping check on obsolescence. The findings are explained and discussed in details.

Resumen
The majority of information about science, culture, society, economy and the environment is born digital, yet the underlying technology is subject to rapid obsolescence. One solution to this obsolescence, format migration, is widely practiced and supported by many software packages, yet migration has well known risks. For example, newer formats – even where similar in function – do not generally support all of the features of their predecessors, and, where similar features exist, there may be significant differences of interpretation. There appears to be a conflict between the wide use of migration and its known risks. In this paper we explore a simple hypothesis – that, where migration paths exist, the majority of data files can be safely migrated leaving only a few that must be handled more carefully – in the context of several scientific data formats that are or were widely used. Our approach is to gather information about potential migration mismatches and, using custom tools, evaluate a large collection of data files for the incidence of these risks. Our results support our initial hypothesis, though with some caveats. Further, we found that writing a tool to identify “risky” format features is considerably easier than writing a migration tool.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address the need for further development of tools that could be used to mitigate obsolescence within the built environment. Literature reviewed within this paper indicates a distinct gap in research, allowing for rising obsolescence-driven investments within asset systems. In addition to further conceptual development, case study testing is required to validate the use of certain existing methods. Design/methodology/approach This paper has developed a Boolean obsolescence assessment tool, which was then tested within a case study environment. This year-long case study provided real world data across three asset systems within an operational building. Findings The findings from this preliminary case study indicate that a Boolean tool of this type has the potential to provide significant insight into obsolescence mitigation. Such a tool, implemented in accordance with onsite asset management processes, has the ability to mitigate and avoid obsolescence-driven investments. Research limitations/implications This case study is limited because of its length and size. To mitigate the effects that may have been captured, this research project has been developed and continued. Originality/value The model featured within this paper originated from an untested obsolescence indexing technique. This model was adapted and extended to improve its accuracy and functionality, which also involved adding weighting mechanisms, resulting in not only an original model but a novel set of results because of the current lack of explicit testing of similar models.

Science’s development occurs rapidly, so that the literature with the latest information has been created and causes the old literature to become obsolete. This is one of the impacts of the development of science known as literature obsolescence. This article analyzes the obsolescence of literature from Jurnal Kajian Informasi & Perpustakaan (JKIP) Universitas Padjadjaran in 2015-2019. The method used is bibliometrics with citation analysis. Literature obsolescence can be determined by analyzing the half-life of the article. The data was obtained from the JKIP website, then the citations from each article were analyzed to obtain the half-life of the article. The results of the citation analysis on 14 articles with total of 1.254 citations obtained that the half-life of JKIP in 2015-2019 was 7,012 years. From the half-life of JKIP articles, the obsolescence of JKIP literature in 2015-2019 is 63% with 789 new citations and 464 obsolete citations.

In this publication, we examined the range of issues that the libraries face during the transfer of traditional collections into digital format, and provided examples of efficient technological solutions.Preserving scientific information in libraries is a complex task encompassing many factors, such as: media obsolescence, changes in device designs, software obsolescence and updates, format compatibility, data security and access to information. The issues of selecting documents for digitization in accordance with the specific requirements of the library and user needs are discussed, and several options for preparing selected data for preservation are proposed. One of the main problems is related to the difficulties of data migration, data loss or damage during the migration process, incorrect configuration or insufficient data verification before migration. The conclusions are made on the prospects for technologies with machine analysis and machine learning algorithms designed for various library services, including data preservation. The need for integration of various library departments in the process of transferring data into digital formats is emphasized.

Resumen
Abstract This article argues that accounting for capital-embodied technology greatly increases the importance of capital in explaining cross-country differences in agricultural labor productivity. To do so, we draw on a novel data set of agricultural capital prices. We document that new capital is more expensive in richer countries, both in absolute terms and relative to old capital. A model of endogenous adoption of capital of different quality links these price differences to the path of capital-embodied technology. In particular, our model recovers the level of embodied technology from the price of new capital and the growth rate of embodied technology from the price of new capital relative to old capital. We then measure the stocks of quality-adjusted capital in agriculture for a sample of 16 countries at different stages of development. We find that adjusting for differences in quality almost doubles the importance of capital in accounting for cross-country differences in agricultural labor productivity: from 21% to 37%. In addition, improvements in capital quality have been an important source of agricultural labor productivity growth over the past 25 years, accounting for 21% and 35% of the productivity growth in poor and rich countries, respectively.

In the society of the 21st century, obsolescence as a phenomenon is all around us, it affects everyone, even if there are those who are less aware of it and do not deal with it. The aim of our study is to identify consumers' attitudes towards planned obsolescence, as well as to learn about their clothes buying habits. We conducted primary research through an online questionnaire, which was distributed using the snowball method. A total of 176 respondents participated in the research. The data analysis was carried out with the help of Microsoft Excel program. Based on our research results, the majority of respondents buy new fashion products every month or every six months. The reason for the exchange is usually that the product is no longer wearable or the customer simply wants something new. More than half of the people participating in the research fell victim to functional obsolescence as a result, but psychological obsolescence also appears. When buying new fashion products, the most important aspects are comfort and durability. On average, 34.42% of the respondents' wardrobe consists of products that are worn less often than every six months.

Resumen
ABSTRACTContrary to Labov's principle of style shifting, studies in language obsolescence portray speakers of dying languages as ‘monostylistic’, a characterization questioned here. Variationist methodology is adopted in a context of gradual language death. By combining quantitative and interactional analyses of data from older, younger, and new speakers of Francoprovençal in France and Switzerland, the article considers (a) to what extent variability in language obsolescence differs from that found in ‘healthy’ languages, and (b) how innovations might spread through communities speaking threatened languages characterized as ‘monostylistic’ and lacking overt normative infrastructure. It is argued that style variation (not monostylism) emerges from linguistic decay: among more fluent speakers, a categorical rule of /l/-palatalization before obstruents becomes underspecified, rendering palatalization available for strategic use. Among new speakers, novel palatal variants form part of an emergent sociolinguistic norm. The study offers fresh insights on the origins of sociolinguistic variation with implications for variationist theory. Abstract Scholarly communications have been rapidly integrated into digitized and networked open ecosystems, where preprint servers have played a pivotal role in accelerating the knowledge transfer processes. However, quantitative evidence is scarce regarding how this paradigm shift beyond the traditional journal publication system has affected the dynamics of collective attention on science. To address this issue, we investigate the citation data of more than 1.5 million eprints on arXiv (https://arxiv.org) and analyze the long-term citation trend for each discipline involved. We find that the typical growth and obsolescence patterns vary across disciplines, reflecting different publication and communication practices. The results provide unique evidence of the attention dynamics shaped by the research community today, including the dramatic growth and fast obsolescence of Computer Science eprints, which has not been captured in previous studies relying on the citation data of journal papers. Subsequently, we develop a quantitatively and temporally normalized citation index with an approximately normal distribution, which is useful for comparing citational attention across disciplines and time periods. Further, we derive a stochastic model consistent with the observed quantitative and temporal characteristics of citation growth and obsolescence. The findings and the developed framework open a new avenue for understanding the nature of citation dynamics.

Resumen
The main aim of this article is to identify the most frequent damage of Smartphones and problems reported by users in a questionnaire and on social media. Social media are a relatively new issue; they are used by companies to get information about offered products and advertise them. On the other hand, they are used by users to exchange opinion about products and write recommendations; thus these opinions are studied. At the same time planned obsolescence is applied, which makes shorter the replacement cycle. Some of damage and problems observed by users are the results of planned obsolescence. The obtained data were processed statistically.

Resumen
Given the growing adoption of AI, cloud data lakes are facing the need to support cost-effective "just-in-case" data archival over long time periods to meet regulatory compliance requirements. Unfortunately, current media technologies suffer from fundamental issues that will soon, if not already, make cost-effective data archival infeasible. In this paper, we present a vision for redesigning the archival tier of cloud data lakes based on a novel, obsolescence-free storage medium-synthetic DNA. In doing so, we make two contributions: (i) we highlight the challenges in using DNA for data archival and list several open research problems, (ii) we outline OligoArchive-DSM (OA-DSM)-an end-to-end DNA storage pipeline that we are developing to demonstrate the feasibility of our vision.

Resumen
Objectives: To discuss a green inventory management system with greenhouse gas emissions, obsolescence, imperfect process, and Vendor Managed Inventory – Consignment Stock (VMI – CS) policy in a fuzzy nature by employing hexagonal fuzzy numbers to tackle uncertain situations. Methods: To find the optimum solution, we use two methods such as centroid method and the graded mean integration representation method for hexagonal fuzzy numbers. We use different sets of data for Marchi et al’s model 1 and for the proposed model with obsolescence to verify the results. Here two supply chain models are proposed, where the crisp model is first discussed with total cost and optimum order quantity. As a second part, the fuzzy model is formulated with fuzzy total cost and fuzzy optimal order quantity. Findings: The results of our discussion represent that the solution obtained from fuzzy by using two methods is slightly the same as the solution found from the crisp model. But since five parameters with ambiguous nature are solved under fuzzy by considering them in the form of a hexagonal fuzzy number, uncertainty is faced here. To show the applicability of the proposed model, numerical examples are given. Novelty: Implementation of obsolescence cost and its emissions in a green inventory system and the process of considering and solving parameters under fuzzy is a unique and important feature of our study. It helps sectors to know the effects of obsolete inventory, the need to include it, and also to rectify vagueness in their specified data. Hence this study is novel in the sense it discusses the above criteria under two fuzzy techniques. 2020 Mathematics Subject Classification: 90B05 Keywords: Hexagonal fuzzy numbers, Centroid method, Graded mean integration representation method, Obsolescence cost, Greenhouse gas emissions

Competitiveness and rapid technological advances lead to the obsolescence of household items and industrial components. The challenge to people and industrial firms is to be equipped with the latest items, but at the lowest cost. During the last decade, several works have investigated various replacement strategies in order to optimally replace the obsolete industrial components. This article introduces the first work of the literature addressing a replacement strategy in case of fuzzy data on the components. The approach is based on fuzzy logic and the cuckoo optimization algorithm. Two case studies are illustrated for highlighting the applicability of the approach proposed.

Abstract Counterfeit electronic parts have become a significant cause of concern in the electronics part supply chain. Several factors that contribute to the targeting of the electrical, electronic, and electromechanical (EEE) parts market by counterfeiters include parts obsolescence, extended lead times, the absence of verification tools, the availability of scrapped or salvaged parts, and the high costs associated with inspection/testing procedures. This article reports on the status of efforts by the G-19 Committee of SAE International to develop standards in response to increasing numbers of counterfeit parts in the supply chain.

Resumen
This research was conducted to determine the level of obsolescence of a literature and determine the author's productivity with the law of lotka in the literature on entrepreneurship in 2015-2019. The research method used is quantitative research methods by conducting citation analysis. In analyzing data, data is collected, submitted, processed and then presented in tables and graphs. The result of the research is the obsolescence level of the literature with an article entitled "The Effect of Organizational Citizenship Behavior on Performance with Service Quality, Satisfaction and Behavior Intention as Antecedents" with the obsolescence of literature and half-life of the last 17 years. And the shortest time for literature obsolescence is only 5 years, the article is entitled: "The Effect of Using Cooperative Learning Type Think-Pair-Share (Tps) on Entrepreneurship Learning Outcomes of Class X Students of Even Semester SMP Kartikatama 1 Metro T.P 2015/2016". Then for the calculation of authors who are often cited, namely I Ghozali, Singh, Sangeeta, Wafa, S.A and Suharti L. Each of the authors of the articles is the writer with the second rank on the subject of entrepreneurship. Most of the writers produce one article. The most productive writer produced 4 articles and got first place, namely Wiliams, then Muhammad Hassan and Berry L were in second place by producing 2 articles in the 2015-2019 period while the third rank was occupied by authors who produced 1 article in the 2015-2019 period, namely as many as 156 authors. Based on the test of Lotka's law on Entrepreneurship articles, it has an exponential value of (n) 3.7537, with the set (C) 0.9127 or 91.27%. From the graph it can be seen that there is a relationship between the number of authors and the number of articles produced as in the lotka law. The fewer the number of writers, the more articles are produced.

Resumen
Occupational stress among information system professionals is gaining more recognition because it may lead to high turnover and less productivity. The present research focuses on software development professionals to examine their occupational stress and demographic characteristics in India. A questionnaire was developed to identify the occupational stress among software development professionals (SDP) using dimensions such as age, average daily working hours, gender, training and nature of work. Data from 156 respondents working in information technology companies in Chennai and Bangalore was collected. It was found that those who were more than 30 years of age have stress due to work family interface. Employees working less than 10 hours daily experience more stress due to fear of obsolescence, individual team interaction, work culture, lack of family support and technical risk propensity. In terms of gender, men and women professionals do not differ in their occupational stress. However, employees who had computer training especially in software programming in addition to their engineering degree face more stress due to fear of obsolescence and technical risk propensity. Software development professionals whose nature of work is purely technical experience more stress because of fear of obsolescence than others. The results are discussed and based on these the relevant implications are suggested.

AbstractNancy Dorian's foundational work on the loss of Gaelic in the East Sutherland communities continues to provide important insights into the nature of the process of language change in situations of obsolescence. In this article I look at a subset of Dorian's data from the perspective of current syntactic theory, and argue that the connected loss of such apparently different constructions as objects of non-finite verbs, inalienable possessive structures, and a range of passives, and the concomitant restructuring of the grammar, all follow from the interaction between a reduction in agreement features on a functional head and the broad syntactic ecology of the language. This approach makes sense of why these apparently disparate constructions all undergo the particular kinds of change that are seen, changes which are mysterious from the perspective that an obsolescing language should alter to become more like the dominant language (in this case English) which is replacing it.

The title of Günther Anders’ major work “The obsolescence of man” seems to capture the essence of the challenges that the impact of artificial intelligence on the human body poses for jurists, namely, the definition of a modern Magna Charta for the digital human body, aimed at addressing the habeas data. Privacy, informational self-determination and identity need to be properly protected in the digital era. UNESCO, the European Union and the Council of Europe are developing important responses at the moment, and they can also rely on some interesting legal tools that can be found in their respective frameworks, which can be used for dealing with the challenges under consideration. In this respect, the purpose of the present study is to analyse the current and future legal scenario under international law and European Union law, both de iure condito and de iure condendo, in search of the habeas data.

<span>To succeed in todays competitive business environment, corporations need to undertake value chain analysis and select an optimal mix of value chain activities. Based on the data collected from 73 small- to medium-sized companies, this study provides evidence regarding current practices in value chain cost tracing and cost system obsolescence. The research findings indicate that companies do a better job of linking value chain costs to products/product lines than to customers/customer classes. Overall, however, the proportion of each value chain cost attributed to either cost object tends to be low. This indicates that firms management may be rather slow in adopting new management tools. Furthermore, most companies are still using value-based cost allocations, which suggests cost system obsolescence. Implications of this study and future research directions are also discussed.</span>

The theoretical framework of media economics, media management and ILC (Industry Life Cycle), applied to market data, has served to illuminate the resistant variables (dependent dual market, oligopolistic structure and use of star system appeal) that explain this moment in the sector’s life cycle. In this context, the improvement in the economic results of these companies that are in transition from the stage of maturity to defensive resistance, and which can lead to adaptation or obsolescence, is not a paradox. The findings of this research may help companies awaken to the fact that through strategic actions, there is still time to respond to the variables which lead to obsolescence.

This article argues that the collection and processing of structured and unstructured data is necessary in small and medium-sized enterprises to advance in the business. The architecture, as it is known today, of a Data Warehouse is superseded by the larger Data Lakehouse. It is based on open data formats with direct access and has excellent support for machine learning and data science. To the enterprises that currently process only structured data, so they are technologically behind the competition, Data Lakehouse can help to solve big challenges based on Data Warehouses and Data Lakes, including data obsolescence, unmanageable data, and misplaced data. In the article it is presented how small and medium-sized enterprises are choosing to make a technological shift in the direction of Data Lakehouse, which helps them with strategic decisions and further steps in the enterprise for faster growth and development.

Resumen
Citation patterns are important to understanding the spread of technological ideas as science is essentially a cumulative activity. One feature only now being appreciated is the obsolescence or ageing patterns in citations and the insights their study can bring. There have been a number of studies examining, predicting, modeling and plotting citation delays, ageing and the publication cycle. These normally apply lognormal, log-logistic and Weibull distributions to scientific papers. This paper adds to this body of work by examining a set of 18 other distributions, and tests their predictive power on a new data set based on 10 years of ISI Citation data for 10 innovation centered journals. The resulting grouping of journals appears to be a useful proxy for academic-practitioner involvement and warrants further investigation. The finding that the three-parameter Inverse Gaussian provides the best fit to the data extends the understanding of this process. As well as allowing the classification of literature, this improved representation of citation obsolescence will allow us to predict earlier and more precisely those scientific ideas which are generating noteworthy attention or may be suitable for early exploitation.

Abstract British Energy has established a comprehensive suite of ageing/obsolescence asset management programmes. Through these programmes, the company has developed a thorough understanding of all the potentially significant degradation mechanisms which could affect the systems structures and components (SSCs) which are essential to the safe, reliable operation of their NPPs. The results from these ageing management programmes underwrite the existing design basis safety case, provide trending information for Safety System Reviews (SSRs) and Periodic Safety Reviews (PSRs) and provide data in support of extending the operating lifetimes of the NPPs. This paper describes te UK regulatory framework with respect to ageing management, British Energy’s overall approach to ageing management, The various ageing/obsolescence management programmes established by BEG, including examples of potentially significant ageing issues which have been successfully addressed by these programmes and the manner in which the results from the programmes are used in support of continued operation, SSRs, PSRs, lifetime extension and general performance enhancement.

Resumen
The earlier planning methods of supply chains (SC) in the skeleton of the extended material requirements planning (EMRP), where the time horizon of the reverse Laplace is infinite, were not convenient to estimate the impact of the technical obsolescence of the product or technology involved, which has economic, environmental, and social consequences. Therefore, the perturbations of timing are presented until the possible obsolescence, with parallel execution of the network simulation model (NSM) to evaluate the impact of the finite lifespan on the value of the chain. The EMRP, as well as the NSM, are based on the skeleton of the material requirements planning model, where delays and their perturbations are presented transparently. Contrary to the previous studies of the net present value (NPV) in the EMRP skeleton, where the infinite horizon is assumed, the impact of shortening the horizon of activities is shown here, in order to also evaluate the risk of financing investments in the SC with a shorter lifespan of products or technology. Owing to the simultaneous appearances of the stochastic variables, the parallel execution and exchanging of data, using NSM is advised. The procedures for estimation of correction factors of the NPV and their values are given.

Resumen
The importance of the electronics sector in the modern world is unquestionable, as it demonstrates clean technology, dry processes, and efficient design, which favor Industry 4.0 and sustainability. Nonetheless, the large number of instruments developed, and their correspondent quick obsolescence, imply an increment in electronic waste. Therefore, in this work, with the aim of diminishing obsolescence, we developed and customized one application that runs independently of systems and takes advantage of the existing computing structures. The application is a new edge computing structure (the AIFC) that is based on an enterprise service bus (ESB) developed in decentralized microservices. In this study, we conducted action research involving the collaboration of researchers and practitioners, and the tests involved six different scenarios; they used existing low-cost, basic computing environments and ranged from the proof of concept, prototype, minimum viable product, and scalability to the roadmap for the structure implementation. The six scenarios emulated sections of a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), and all the developed microservices communicate with each other to perform data filtering, processing, storage, query, and sensor data acquisition. The results show that it is possible to carry out these functions with low latency and without any decrement or even increase in performance when compared with more conventional cloud computing structures, and it is also possible to manipulate different products that do not have single, consolidated structures. Moreover, there is no need to update machines or communication structures, which are the main factors of rapid obsolescence. Therefore, following the steps of the AIFC development, the results from the proof of concept to the minimum viable product and scalability tests correspond to a roadmap for a sustainable solution and are an important tool for both Industry 4.0 and SMEs.

Resumen
Obsolescence leads to a shorter lifecycle of electronic products which results in generating more electronic waste (e-waste) and excessive use of natural resources to produce goods. It is basically a wearing out of technical or esthetical appliances. Unfortunately, there are only a few studies and data focused on the issue, especially in developing counties. The objective of this study is to show how the lifespan of cellular phone change overtime and to provide data about consumer behavior in the Indonesia’s cellular phone market. A total of 1.030 respondents were recruited from online survey in 13 most populous cities of Indonesia for consumer analysis. Panel regression Common Effect Model (CEM) and Chi-squared independent test were applied as the analytical tools. The result shows that both consumer contribute to the reduction of cellular phone lifecycle. It is confirmed that the lifespan of cellular phone is getting shorter by the year and by the ownership order. In addition, subjective considerations of discarding product significantly reduce cellular phone’s lifespan. Obsolescence is not only an issue that should be addressed to the manufacturers, but also as a responsibility for the consumers.

ABSTRACTThis study examines contact-induced change in Jèrriais, the severely endangered Norman variety currently spoken by some 1% of the population of Jersey, one of the British Channel Islands. Today, English dominates all linguistic domains of island life, and all speakers of Jèrriais are bilingual. The analysis uses original data to test empirically whether Myers-Scotton's (2002) five theoretical assumptions about the structural path of language attrition (broadly defined as language loss at the level of the individual) also have relevance for the process of language obsolescence (broadly defined as language loss at the level of the community). It explores i) whether Jèrriais is undergoing contact influenced language change owing to its abstract grammatical structure being split and recombined with English, a hypothesis related to Myers-Scotton's Abstract Level model; and ii) whether different morpheme types of Jèrriais are related to the production process in different ways and are, accordingly, more or less susceptible to change during the process of language obsolescence, a hypothesis related to Myers-Scotton's 4-M model. In addition to its contribution to linguistic theory, this study increases existing knowledge about Jèrriais and makes data from this language available for systematic comparison with other languages.

Resumen
This article considers current research and development efforts around the creation of subsea data centers. Such experiments (e.g. Microsoft’s Project Natick) aim to identify new techniques for maximizing data center efficiency by harnessing the cooling effects of the surrounding ocean. To date, subsea data center experiments have had more success in Atlantic contexts, but the history of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the sea suggests that subsea data centers will no doubt have Pacific futures. Situating this discussion within the unique cultural and environmental landscapes of the Pacific islands, particularly Hawaiʻi, we anticipate anxieties that stem from historical patterns of project development that lack consideration of cultural impact. We argue that a pre-conversation about subsea data centers is necessary given the extant data infrastructures in Hawaiʻi already corroding or within the margins of risk for obsolescence and decay. Finally, as islands and island nations, especially, are often targets for colonization as vital hubs in underwater information and communication networks, the article examines the tensions in such subsea experiments between impact and impermanence, between global and local, and between corporate and community.

Resumen
We present performance data relating to the use of migration in a system we are creating to provide web access to heterogeneous document collections in legacy formats. Our goal is to enable sustained access to collections such as these when faced with increasing obsolescence of the necessary supporting applications and operating systems. Our system allows searching and browsing of the original files within their original contexts utilizing binary images of the original media. The system uses static and dynamic file migration to enhance collection browsing, and emulation to support both the use of legacy programs to access data and long-term preservation of the migration software. While we provide an overview of the architectural issues in building such a system, the focus of this paper is an in-depth analysis of file migration using data gathered from testing our software on 1,885 CD-ROMs and DVDs. These media are among the thousands of collections of social and scientific data distributed by the United States Government Printing Office (GPO) on legacy media (CD-ROM, DVD, floppy disk) under the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) over the past 20 years.
