Resumen
Utilizing data primarily from the U.S. Department of Commerce, both estuaries and watersheds for 78 U.S. systems are analyzed. Watersheds are classified according to total population and discrete subpopulations. The Vollenweider approach, which compares hydraulic loading to nutrient loading of lakes, is adapted to estuaries. By considering total population as a surrogate of point source nutrients, agricultural workers as a surrogate of non-point source toxics and nutrients and chemical + metal workers as a surrogate of point source toxics, we can estimate potential anthropogenic impacts on watersheds. When these surrogates are plotted against hydraulic loading, managers have a tool to identify estuaries most likely to be under greatest anthropogenic presaure. The estuaries with highest susceptibility from total population, as well as the estuaries with the the highest susceptibility to toxic stress, are identified. On a Vollenweider diagram, the phosphorous loadings of freshwater bodies are plotted as a function of hydraulic loading. The permissible-excessive phosphorous loadings have been both theoretically and empirically determined. We have replotted the freshwater data and added 33 U.S. estuary P loadings that were previously unavailable. Estuaries plot on the Vollenweider diagram as a continuum of fresh waterbodies, both in terms of hydraulic loading and phosphorus loading. Most estuaries appear to have permissible P loadings. Analysis of nutrient loading (normalized to hydraulic loading) versus water quality parameters like chlorophyll a indicates that estuaries are more efficient users of nutrients than are freshwater bodies, and that they reach a “nutrient saturation point”. Perhaps this is due to grazing or turbidity. It appears that, in general, the OECD eutrophication modeling approach is applicable to estuarine systems as well as lakes and impoundments.

Resumen
In this paper, some recent data exploring mixed mode I + III fracture of cracked polymethyl methacrylate specimens are re-analysed in terms of the local energy. The data have been obtained by using a new loading fixture proposed for exploring mixed mode I + III fracture experimentally. While a large bulk of experimental results from cracked specimens of polymethyl methacrylate under pure modes of loading, in particular under mode I loading, can be found in the literature, only very few tests have been carried out considering multiaxial static loadings, and for this reason, only limited studies have been performed on possible criteria for the fracture assessment under mixed mode I + III conditions. By taking advantage of the recent set of data on polymethyl methacrylate tested at different values of the mode mixity ratio, a criterion based on the local strain energy density previously applied by the same authors only to pure modes of loading is successfully extended here to the case of tension and torsion loadings applied in combination. Good agreement is shown to exist between the theoretical estimates and the experimental data.

Resumen
This paper proposes a scheme for vibration frequencies extraction of the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland from high sampling GPS data. The interaction between the dynamic response and the ambient loadings is carefully analysed. A bilinear Chebyshev high-pass filter is designed to isolate the quasistatic movements, the FFT algorithm and peak-picking approach are applied to extract the vibration frequencies, and a GPS data accumulation counter is suggested for real-time monitoring applications. To understand the change in the structural characteristics under different loadings, the deformation results from three different loading conditions are presented, that is, the ambient circulation loading, the strong wind under abrupt wind speed change, and the specific trial with two 40 t lorries passing the bridge. The results show that GPS not only can capture absolute 3D deflections reliably, but also can be used to extract the frequency response accurately. It is evident that the frequencies detected using the filtered deflection time series in different direction show quite different characteristics, and more stable results can be obtained from the height displacement time series. The frequency responses of 0.105 and 0.269 Hz extracted from the lateral displacement time series correlate well with the data using height displacement time series.

Resumen
Concentration data for water quality parameters reported as less than the detection limit (DL) may be considered to have come from a censored probability distribution. Traditionally, if it was necessary to assign a value to a sample reported as less than DL, various ad hoc methods were used such as selecting arbitrary values (0, 1/2 DL, DL, etc.). As analytical methods improved, DL's became smaller and the choice of ad hoc methods had less of an effect. However, there are two cases where the choice of estimation method is still a problem: (1) it is desired to calculate a differential loading (i.e. downstream minus upstream); (2) a loading estimate is desired in a tributary whose flow rate is extremely large. Both cases apply in connecting channels such as the Niagara and Detroit Rivers. The background for development of a nonarbitrary method for handling these situations is presented and the resultant estimator is used on water quality data from the connecting channels and Lake Ontario. The equations for confidence intervals for estimated mean concentrations or loadings are also presented. The effect of changing the DL is discussed.

A sloped reinforced soil wall, comprising two sections with a different arrangement and spacing of geogrid reinforcement, was built and monitored for loading conditions of self-weight, a cycle of surcharge load, and permanent surcharge loading of the wall crest. Instrumentation was used to measure force and strain in the reinforcement, soil strain and temperature, and earth pressure. Performance data are reported for a period of 20 months following completion of construction and describe the response to loading. Interpretation of the data addresses properties of the reinforcement and soil which are used in design and allows an evaluation of creep behaviour of the polymeric reinforcement. Key words: reinforced soil, field monitoring, creep.

Resumen
Bayesian structural equation modeling (BSEM) is a flexible tool for the exploration and estimation of sparse factor loading structures; that is, most cross-loading entries are zero and only a few important cross-loadings are nonzero. The current investigation was focused on the BSEM with small-variance normal distribution priors (BSEM-N) for both variable selection and model estimation. The prior sensitivity in BSEM-N was explored in factor analysis models with sparse loading structures through a simulation study (Study 1) and an empirical example (Study 2). Study 1 examined the prior sensitivity in BSEM-N based on the model fit, population model recovery, true and false positive rates, and parameter estimation. Seven shrinkage priors on cross-loadings and five noninformative/vague priors on other model parameters were examined. Study 2 provided a real data example to illustrate the impact of various priors on model fit and parameter selection and estimation. Results indicated that when the 95% credible intervals of shrinkage priors barely covered the population cross-loading values, it resulted in the best balance between true and false positives. If the goal is to perform variable selection, a sparse cross-loading structure is required, preferably with a minimal number of nontrivial cross-loadings and relatively high primary loading values. To improve parameter estimates, a relatively large prior variance is preferred. When cross-loadings are relatively large, BSEM-N with zero-mean priors is not recommended for the estimation of cross-loadings and factor correlations.

Resumen
Abstract. Data from 57 wetlands from around the world have been collated to investigate whether wetlands affect the nutrient loading of waters draining through them; the majority of wetlands reduced nutrient loading and there was little difference in the proportion of wetlands that reduced N to those that reduced P loading. However, some wetlands increase nutrient loadings by increasing the loading of soluble N and P species thus potentially driving aquatic eutrophication. Studies conducted over a period of a year or more, or that involved frequent sampling during high flow events, were more likely to indicate that the wetland increased nutrient loadings. Swamps and marshes differed from riparian zones in their nutrient function characteristics by being slightly more effective at nutrient reduction than riparian zones. The attributes that enable wetlands to be effective in reducing N and P loadings need consideration when constructing or managing wetlands to reduce nutrient loadings. Their wise use will be an important strategy for meeting the Water Framework Directive requirements for many water bodies. Resumen
Due to their widespread use, Internet, Web 2.0 and digital sensors create data in non-traditional volumes (at terabytes and petabytes scale). The big data characterized by the four V's has brought with it new challenges given the limited capabilities of traditional computing systems. This paper aims to provide solutions which can cope with very large data in Decision-Support Systems (DSSs). In the data integration phase, specifically, the authors propose a conceptual modeling approach for parallel and distributed Extracting-Transforming-Loading (ETL) processes. Among the complexity dimensions of big data, this study focuses on the volume of data to ensure a good performance for ETL processes. The authors' approach allows anticipating on the parallelization/distribution issues at the early stage of Data Warehouse (DW) projects. They have implemented an ETL platform called Parallel-ETL (P-ETL for short) and conducted some experiments. Their performance analysis reveals that the proposed approach enables to speed up ETL processes by up to 33% with the improvement rate being linear.

Resumen
Truck weight data collected from weigh-in-motion (WIM) sites were used to develop a procedure to estimate truck load factors for pavement design purposes. A conceptual procedure that uses WIM data to derive equivalent single-axle load factors for different types of trucks is presented. Sets of load factors can be developed for different types of facilities. An example is provided to illustrate how these factors can be used by engineers to calculate project design loading. Applying these factors to traffic classification counts collected from the statewide traffic monitoring program, engineers can also compute network traffic loading history.

Resumen
A triaxial test system capable of subjecting samples of saturated soil to load controlled cyclic loading under various conditions of drainage is described. The system was used to apply cyclic loading, from compression to extension, at a frequency of 0.06 Hz (4 cycles/min) on a relatively dense saturated sand. This relatively low loading frequency is considered applicable to problems associated with wave or wind loadings. The results of a series of undrained cyclic loading tests are presented. This data generally supports concepts developed by previous research on cyclic loadings of sands.Partial drainage was found to be effective in counteracting pore water pressure buildup at this low cyclic frequency. Failure of one test sample was prevented by drainage even though cyclic mobility had been initiated. Data obtained from this type of controlled drainage testing can be used directly as model study data or can be combined with pore pressure dissipation theory to evaluate the risk of failure under cyclic loading and to design relief measures, such as drainage wells, to prevent the initiation of cyclic mobility in dense sands. Key words: cyclic loading, triaxial, sand, undrained, partial drainage, cyclic mobility, offshore.

Resumen
Background Modern data-driven medical research provides new insights into the development and course of diseases and enables novel methods of clinical decision support. Clinical and translational data warehouses, such as Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside (i2b2) and tranSMART, are important infrastructure components that provide users with unified access to the large heterogeneous data sets needed to realize this and support use cases such as cohort selection, hypothesis generation, and ad hoc data analysis. Objective Often, different warehousing platforms are needed to support different use cases and different types of data. Moreover, to achieve an optimal data representation within the target systems, specific domain knowledge is needed when designing data-loading processes. Consequently, informaticians need to work closely with clinicians and researchers in short iterations. This is a challenging task as installing and maintaining warehousing platforms can be complex and time consuming. Furthermore, data loading typically requires significant effort in terms of data preprocessing, cleansing, and restructuring. The platform described in this study aims to address these challenges. Methods We formulated system requirements to achieve agility in terms of platform management and data loading. The derived system architecture includes a cloud infrastructure with unified management interfaces for multiple warehouse platforms and a data-loading pipeline with a declarative configuration paradigm and meta-loading approach. The latter compiles data and configuration files into forms required by existing loading tools, thereby automating a wide range of data restructuring and cleansing tasks. We demonstrated the fulfillment of the requirements and the originality of our approach by an experimental evaluation and a comparison with previous work. Results The platform supports both i2b2 and tranSMART with built-in security. Our experiments showed that the loading pipeline accepts input data that cannot be loaded with existing tools without preprocessing. Moreover, it lowered efforts significantly, reducing the size of configuration files required by factors of up to 22 for tranSMART and 1135 for i2b2. The time required to perform the compilation process was roughly equivalent to the time required for actual data loading. Comparison with other tools showed that our solution was the only tool fulfilling all requirements. Conclusions Our platform significantly reduces the efforts required for managing clinical and translational warehouses and for loading data in various formats and structures, such as complex entity-attribute-value structures often found in laboratory data. Moreover, it facilitates the iterative refinement of data representations in the target platforms, as the required configuration files are very compact. The quantitative measurements presented are consistent with our experiences of significantly reduced efforts for building warehousing platforms in close cooperation with medical researchers. Both the cloud-based hosting infrastructure and the data-loading pipeline are available to the community as open source software with comprehensive documentation.

Resumen
Principal component analysis (PCA) has been widely used in metabolomics. However, it is not always possible to detect phenotype-associated principal component (PC) scores. Previously, we proposed a smoothed PCA for samples acquired with a time course or rank order, but hypothesis testing to select significant metabolite candidates was not possible. Here, we modified the smoothed PCA as an orthogonal smoothed PCA (OS-PCA) so that statistical hypothesis testing in OS-PC loadings could be performed with the same PC projections provided by the smoothed PCA. Statistical hypothesis testing is especially useful in metabolomics because biological interpretations are made based on statistically significant metabolites. We applied the OS-PCA method to two real metabolome datasets, one for metabolic turnover analysis and the other for evaluating the taste of Japanese green tea. The OS-PCA successfully extracted similar PC scores as the smoothed PCA; these scores reflected the expected phenotypes. The significant metabolites that were selected using statistical hypothesis testing of OS-PC loading facilitated biological interpretations that were consistent with the results of our previous study. Our results suggest that OS-PCA combined with statistical hypothesis testing of OS-PC loading is a useful method for the analysis of metabolome data.

Resumen
We investigated by means of a simulation study how well methods for factor rotation can identify a two-facet simple structure. Samples were generated from orthogonal and oblique two-facet population factor models with 4 (2 factors per facet) to 12 factors (6 factors per facet). Samples drawn from orthogonal populations were submitted to factor analysis with subsequent Varimax, Equamax, Parsimax, Factor Parsimony, Tandem I, Tandem II, Infomax, and McCammon’s minimum entropy rotation. Samples drawn from oblique populations were submitted to factor analysis with subsequent Geomin rotation and a Promax-based Tandem II rotation. As a benchmark, we investigated a target rotation of the sample loadings toward the corresponding faceted population loadings. The three conditions were sample size ( n = 400, 1,000), number of factors ( q = 4-12), and main loading size ( l = .40, .50, .60). For less than six orthogonal factors Infomax and McCammon’s minimum entropy rotation and for six and more factors Tandem II rotation yielded the highest congruence of sample loading matrices with faceted population loading matrices. For six and more oblique factors Geomin rotation and a Promax-based Tandem II rotation yielded the highest congruence with faceted population loadings. Analysis of data of 393 participants that performed a test for the Berlin Model of Intelligence Structure revealed that the faceted structure of this model could be identified by means of a Promax-based Tandem II rotation of task aggregates corresponding to the cross-products of the facets. Implications for the identification of faceted models by means of factor rotation are discussed.

Resumen
Data modeling and data processing are important activities in any scientific research. This research focuses on the modeling of data and processing of data generated by a saccadometer. The approach used is based on the relational data model, but the processing and storage of the data is done with client datasets. The experiments were performed with 26 randomly selected files from a total of 264 experimental sessions. The data from each experimental session was stored in three different formats, respectively text, binary and extensible markup language (XML) based. The results showed that the text format and the binary format were the most compact. Several actions related to data processing were analyzed. Based on the results obtained, it was found that the two fastest actions are respectively loading data from a binary file and storing data into a binary file. In contrast, the two slowest actions were storing the data in XML format and loading the data from a text file, respectively. Also, one of the time-consuming operations turned out to be the conversion of data from text format to binary format. Moreover, the time required to perform this action does not depend in proportion on the number of records processed.

An interpretation method has been developed that makes use of both the loading and unloading portions of a pressuremeter test and incorporates nonlinear, undrained soil behaviour. This method has been modified to handle large trains. The proposed interpretation accepts that some level of soil disturbance exists during the early stages of a pressuremeter test, and hence more emphasis is placed on the unloading portion of the test. A methodology is described to allow this interpretation procedure to be applied to self-bored, prebored, and full-displacement undrained pressuremeter tests. The proposed method is evaluated using self-boring and full-displacement pressuremeter test results from various published field projects. The interpretation is accomplished using commercially available microcomputer software that can perform the curve-matching process for both loading and unloading portions of the test. Key words : pressuremeter, loading data, unloading data.

Resumen
Polypropylene- layered silicate nanocomposite based on muscovite was prepared via melt compounding. Muscovite was organomodified with cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) by using different filler loading. The effects of muscovite content on mechanical and morphology properties were evaluated. Analysis of test data showed that the mechanical properties increased with an increase in filler loading up to a threshold of 3 wt%; thereafter the material properties were degraded. The enhancement of properties attributed to the formation of intercalated and exfoliation nanocomposite structure at these loadings of clay. At higher filler loading, degradation in mechanical properties maybe attributed to the formation of agglomerated clay tactoids.

Resumen
AbstractPrevious studies involving rheological measurement of semi-solid foods have reported a large amount of data variability, but have focused little on understanding the cause of such variability. This project examined whether differences in normal force have an effect on the variability of rheological measurements. Experimental methods focused on error introduced during sample loading; specifically whether normal force application during loading influenced the storage (G’) and loss (G”) moduli of semi-solid and liquid foods. Samples were loaded to 5 or 20 N between the parallel plates of a TA-1000N rheometer and tested immediately. For all semi-solid products tested, normal force application during sample loading did significantly affect oscillatory parameters, with G’ and G” measurements increasing up to 50 % with greater normal force. However, loading normal force did not significantly influence the parameters measured for the liquid sample. This suggests that differences in normal force during loading could be a significant source of data variability during rheological measurement of semi-solid products.
