Texto completoThis document is a contribution to Cne RANS numerical modeling of the unsteady flow field of a lift-driven water turbine of Darrieus type. The study has been conducted around two axes. The first axis was a theoretical analysis of Cne physical phenomena affecting the performance, the self-starting capability and the torque smoothing of these machines. Solutions have been proposed in order to alleviate Cnese disadvantages. The use of fairings, winglets or the helical blades was proposed. The second axis concerns the 3D RANS modeling. The numerical model provides a good agreement with the experimental results. It has been shown that the induced and the interference drag decrease approximately by 20% the power output. The helical blade does not provide the expected smoothing of the rotor torque. The work should be continued in order to validate the numerical results by comparison with experimental velocity field

Texto completoWith key applications in marine renewable energy. the vertical axis water turbine can use current or tidal energy in an eco-friendly manner. However, it is difficult to reconcile optimal performance of hydrokinetic turbines and compliance wilh the aquatic environment as the main drawback of the turbines is the formation of non-linear flow structures caused by the unsteady movement of the blades. Eddies in the flow are advected and can interact with other blades, which leads to a reduction in power output. To limit this phenomenon, the turbines operate at high speeds, which are likely to reduce the shaft power. High speeds of rotational so forbid the passage of aquatic animais, and are the cause of a suction effect on the sediments. The objective of this thesis work is twofold. First, it aims to develop a blade pitch control to get the flow adjusted around the blade profile at any given flow configuration by incorporatin.g the profile's motion with respect to incident flow. Such a system intends to achieve the objective of operating at reduced speeds without vortical releases, which should allow achieving a high torque without causing damage to the environment. This thesis work is mainly carried out in three phases. ln the first phase, the irrotational flow over an arbitrary profile is formulated using conforma] mapping. Prospective potential flow application on the basis of Couchet theory (1976) is involved in the development of a control law that decides the blade pitching in a constant circulation framework. In the second phase, a numerical validation of the developed analytical work is presented using CFD to examine how the theoretical fomulation can be effectively applied to Darricus turbines. In the final phase, two prototypes are developed, one is classical Darrieus turbine with fixed blades, and other is the turbine with pitching blades for experimental measurements of performance as well as flow fields(by PIV) in order to validate the computational results

Texto completoOur research entitled «Joventut» (1900-1906) and the last modernism is about this weekly publication which, besides the Catalanist and cultural task carried out in a broad sense during its seven years of existence, it also promoted, firstly in parallel and later by itself, the edition of literary works by the most highly reputed Catalan and foreign authors. Our research work is organised in fourteen parts which, with the exception of Chapter 1, deal with the twofold perspective of the reconstruction of the external history of the weekly paper and the editorial department. This is followed by the analysis of the most meaningful fields that are essential and also provide its own character to the publication. Differently, Chapter I. THE STATE OF THE QUESTION (L'ESTAT DE LA QUESTIO) is intended to examine the most relevant bibliographic materials that have studied and valued the job of the editors of «Joventut» from the end of the publishing house to the present time. In chapter II. THE FORMATION OF THE INTELLECTUAL CORE OF «JOVENTUT» (LA FORMACIO DEL NUCLI INTELLECTUAL DE «JOVENTUT»), we reconstruct the prehistory of the group, that is to say, how they meet, what their collaborations in the literary field are, and their first journalist attempt when being in charge of the publication «Setmana Catalanista». In chapter III .«JOVENTUT» (1900-1906): DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION («JOVENTUT» (1900-1906): DESCRIPCIO I FUNCIONAMENT), we mention the beginnings of the weekly paper, the composition of the editors team and the collaborators; the general description of the publication; the reasons that the Editors claimed to put and end to the magazine; and the aspects related to their funding and their commercial policy. In chapter IV. THE LIBRARY JOVENTUT (1901-1914) (LA BIBLIOTECA JOVENTUT) we provide a general and complete description of the task carried out by the publishing house. In a second section, which includes chapters V to XI, we focus our attention on the analytic commentary, and corroborated with the current existing bibliography, of the different thematic fields that «Joventut» arranges its contents. In this way, in chapter V. THE DISCOURSE OF MODERNITY (EL DISCURS DE LA MODERNITAT), we analise, from a broad point of view, the three different domains that the weekly publication took into account in order to become updated: the construction of a liberal space and also a space of progress in the bosom of the plotical party Unio Catalanista, the rift from Spain and the introduction of some common features of the opening to Europe (feminism, a growing interest for science...). In chapter VI. THE LITERARY CREATION AND CRITICISM (LA CREACIO I LA CRITICA LITERARIES), we face a complex and eclectic literary scene, which we analise from a triple point of view, following a timeline: a) a study of the literature of the 19th century and the debate about the purpose of the Floral Games (Jocs Florals) in the early years of the 20th century; b) the reflex of the aesthetic eclecticism as a paradigm of the contemporary modernity, focusing on the analysis of literary genres and emphasizing, concerning poetry and prose, the specific study of the reception of works by Joan Maragall, Joaquim Ruyra and Victor Catala; and c) the reading of the Classics in «Joventut», in the convergence with the emerging Noucentism. In chapter VII. THE THEATRE CRITICISM (LA CRITICA TEATRAL), we undertake the study of this part of the publication, with Emili Tintorer as the one in charge of it and the one who evaluated the situation of the Catalan theatre, making proposals for the future so as to regenerate the Catalan scene and modernise it. He was also the responsible of the criticisms of the plays performed in Barcelona. In chapter VIII.THE MUSIC CRITICISM (LA CRÍTICA MUSICAL), we firstly examine the profile of the first and main responsible critic, Joaquim Pena, and we consider his judgements to this type of criticism and the level of contribution of the weekly publication to create and promote the Wagnerian Association; and, secondly, we deal with the development of the section of music criticism, after Pena left the team, when Jeroni Zanné and other collaborators took charge of this section of the publication. Similarly, in chapter IX. ART: CREATION AND CRITICISM (ART: CREACIÓ I CRÍTICA), we analise the task of the different artistic directors of the weekly publication (Alexandre de Riquer, Joan Brull i Sebastià Junyent, mainly), and we comment on the position of «Joventut» about the artistic modernism, the debates about art, catalanism and morals, and the defence of the ancient art and the heritage, among other issues. The next two parts concentrate on the linguistic field. In chapter X. THE DETERMINED BOOST TO ESPERANTO (EL DECIDIT IMPULS A L’ESPERANTO), we analyse the important job of dissemination that the publication undertook, from 1905 and at the hands of Frederic Pujulà i Vallès, in favour of the knowledge and use of this international language. And, finally, although it doesn’t belong to any section of the weekly paper as the previous ones, in chapter XI. «JOVENTUT» AND CATALAN («JOVENTUT» I LA LLENGUA CATALANA), we review the strong defence of the use of Catalan in all the fields and the different opinions and controversies around the normative language. After the compulsary chapters XII. CONCLUSIONS and XIII. REFERENCES (SELECCIÓ BIBLIOGRÀFICA), we conclude our study of the weekly publication «Joventut» with chapter XIV. ANNEX: a) Indexes: General index of authors and anonymous collaborations, Subjects and supplementary names, Alphabetical order of authors of poetry, Alphabetical order of authors of Narrations, Plays, Illustrators, Translated Authors, Translators, Reviews of Books, Critics and Review of Literaty Works, Reviews of weekly publications, Theatre and Music criticism; b) Unpublished texts and articles; c) Subscriptions, census and different types of lists; and d) Graphic documents.

Texto completoNew projects have recently been launched to build farms of several tidal or river turbines, which are part of the renewable energy systems. The turbine wake interactions in the farm must be considered, as they can affect the power production of the turbines. A steady-state Actuator force model using the RANS equations is developed in the present work to calculate the power production and the flow through arrays of tidal or river Darrieus turbines. It uses detailed three dimensional force distributions depending on the position on the turbine, obtained beforehand by a set of blade-resolved URANS simulations of the turbine. New power coefficient and force coefficient laws depending on the local velocity (flow velocity at the machine position) instead of the upstream velocity are established and appear to be independent from the local turbine blockage in an array. Those laws are used to construct a model that adapt the Actuator force distributions to the local velocity of the flow reaching each turbine, in order to simulate each turbine functioning close to its maximum efficiency point. The model is validated against experimental measurements on a reduced-scale Darrieus turbine. Different farm configurations are simulated and compared to results of the same model adapted in two dimensions. The distances between turbines that are optimizing the farm power production are especially investigated

Texto completoThis thesis focuses on the study of the aerodynamic loads effects on the nonlinear dynamic behavior of Darrieus--type vertical axis wind turbine. The latter has received more attention due to its efficiency in urban regions compared to other wind turbines. In fact, the wind flow speed in urban regions continuously changes direction and is extremely turbulent. The inherent characteristics of its omni-directionality make it more suitable to harnessing this kind of flow. It is known that Darrieus wind turbine is characterized by an inherently unsteady aerodynamic behavior and a complex flow around rotor blades. The non-stationary behavior of the mentioned turbine increases vibration. These aerodynamic vibrations are transmitted to the gearing mechanism. We have, firstly, developed a numerical simulation, allowing to simulate the complexity of the unsteady aerodynamic phenomena keeping a compromise between the reliability of prediction and the rapidity of calculation. This numerical simulation has been carried out using a two-dimensional unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. Simulation results compared to those available in the literature are in good agreement. The Darrieus turbine efficiency is also optimized; thus introducing a significant scientific contribution. The latter is the objective of analyzing the aerodynamic load impact in the dynamic behavior of the Darrieus turbine in non-stationary regime. In this context, a parametric study has been developed in order to find optimal functioning of the studied turbine, which is characterized by the most performing aerodynamic torque associated with acceptable levels of dynamic vibration. In general, it is difficult to predict the dynamic response of the wind turbine with a good level of accuracy due to the aerodynamic loads turbulence and uncertain characteristics. It becomes necessary to take into account the uncertainty in the input parameters to ensure the robustness of the Darrieus turbine geared system. In a robustness study objective, the Polynomial Chaos method is adopted to predict the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the gearing system taking into account uncertainties which are associated to the performance coefficient of the input aerodynamic torque. This leads to an important scientific research contribution. The results have shown a large dispersion of the random parameter in the dynamic response of the gearing system compared to the deterministic study. That proves the insufficiency of that study for a robustness analyses. They have also proved that the Polynomial Chaos method is an efficient probabilistic tool for uncertainty propagation. Finally, the new proposed robust mechanical analysis indicates a good capacity to investigate the dynamic behavior of the Darrieus turbine thanks to its superior predictive capabilities in coupling complex aerodynamic phenomena with a mechanical gearing system vibration. Where the originality of such correlation in our work

Texto completoVertical-axis turbines have gained increasing attention in the wind and hydrokinetic energy sectors in recent years. This type of turbine has several interesting advantages over the well-established horizontal-axis wind turbine concept and recent works have suggested that vertical-axis turbines could be favorable for applications in turbine farms. However, this technology is relatively young and more research and development is needed to fully assess their potential in turbine farms. Indeed, it is crucial to better characterize the performance of vertical-axis turbines, find ways to improve their aerodynamic efficiency and understand the different physical mechanisms affecting their wake recovery in order to draw informed conclusions about their eventual use in wind farms and hydrokinetic turbine farms. In this context, the present thesis aims at studying the impact of two design considerations on the efficiency and on the wake recovery of vertical-axis turbines: the use of detached end-plates and the effect of the blade support structures.Firstly, the effect of detached end-plates on the performance and on the wake recovery of a vertical-axis turbine is investigated. A detached end-plate consists of a thin stationary plate that is located very close to the tips of the turbine blades, but not in contact with them. Using numerical simulations (CFD), two geometries of detached end-plates are simulated on a vertical-axis turbine: a circular geometry and a semi-annular one. The results show that these two geometries of detached end-plates allow to significantly increase the efficiency of the vertical-axis turbine considered. The efficiency enhancement can be explained by the viscous interaction that takes place between the turbine bladesand the detached end-plates. This interaction increases the circulation and the lift near the blade tips, which also increases the power extracted from the flow. Regarding the wake, it is shown that the use of semi-annular detached end-plates leads to a faster velocity recovery downstream of the vertical-axis turbine considered. The viscous interaction between the blades and the semi-annular detached end-plates is favorable to the velocity that is induced in the spanwise direction in the turbine wake, and this velocity induction is beneficial to the wake re-energization. Consequently, the velocity recovery in the wake of the turbine with semi-annular detached end-plates is faster than that in the wake of the reference turbine (without detached end-plates).Secondly, always using numerical simulations, the effect of the design and of the position of the blade support structures (i.e., the struts) is investigated on a vertical-axis turbine. The results show that the struts are less detrimental to the turbine efficiency if they are located at the tips of the turbine blades, rather than at other intermediate positions along the blade span. Moreover, it is shown that the use of rounded blade-strut junction geometries allows to increase the turbine efficiency very significantly. Indeed, the use of rounded blade-strut junctions reduces the kinetic energy of the blade tip vortices, and thus, decreases the induced drag considerably. Therefore, rounded blade-strut junctions help to obtain a flow that is essentially two-dimensional over a significant portion of the turbine blades and they also help to reach very interesting efficiency values. Regarding the wake recovery, the position of the struts along the blade span affects the spatial distribution of the vorticity shed in the turbine wake. The results show that struts located at the blade tips are slightly detrimental to the wake recovery incomparison with struts located at other intermediate positions along the blade span. However, because of the significant increase in efficiency, the use of rounded tip struts remains a very interesting option for vertical-axis turbines.

Texto completoA regional synthesis of the glacial phases corresponding to the last glacial cycle in the Pyrenees is presented in this work. Moreover, an absolute chronology for each one of these phases is proposed: • The Premaximum stabilization phases are previous to 50000 years BP. • The Glacial maximum phase is placed between 45000-50000 years BP. - The Postmaximum stabilization phase is placed between 31000-45000 years BP. - The Valley-glaciers phase is previous to 26000 years BP. • The Altitude-glaciers phase is placed between 13000-16000 years BP. - The Rock glaciers phase is placed between 10000•11000 years BP. - The Little Ice Age is placed between 100-300 years BP. It is convenient to highlight that the age of the last glacial maximum in the Pyrenees, as it happens in the Vosgues massif (Seret et al., 1990), is clearly diachronic with the age of the last glacial maximum established for the northern Europe and northern America continental ice-sheets around 18000 years BP. The main glaciolacustrine environments related to the last glacial cycle in the Pyrenees are also described. Several proglacial and juxtaglacial sedimentary complexes have been chosen as type-localities for this study: - The proglacial moraine-dammed complex of Seminari de Vilaller (Noguera Ribagorçana basin). - The proglacial complexes related lo overdeepened basins of Barruera (Noguera de Tor basin), Bono (Noguera Ribagorçana basin), Benasc (Ésera basin) and Esterri d'Aneu (Noguera Pallaresa basin). - The juxtaglacial complexes of Llestui (Noguera Ribagorçana basin) and Cerler (Ésera basin). The main results of this work are synthesized in a figure (see fig. VlII.1) which correlates the proposed chronology for the last glacial cycle in the Pyrenees with the sedimentary sequences and the evolution of the several glaciolacustrine complexes studied.

Texto completoThis work describes the numerical simulation of an acti4e variable pitch Darrieus turbine with two methods, one of which is derived from momentum theory and ONERA-EDLIN unsteady model, and the other is 0Ff). Though almost no Darrieus turbine produced electrical power from wind since early 90s, a renewed interest arose from the development of water turbines because most drawbacks which prevented this system from becoming a major wind turbine system do not exist in water. For this reason many publications tackling various issues in water crossflow turbines were written in the past few years. Dynamic and static stall characteristics of an airfoil have a very strong influence on the turbine performance. Considering how the vortex method could not predict it accurately, and the complexity of a CFD simulation in an optimisation process, the ONERA-EDLIN model is a very interesting compromise. On top of that, it has the ability to model any special kinematics and not just only pitch; it can predict installed dynamic behavior based on a potential formulation; and it can calculate dynamic stall for the moments, which is interesting in the case of variable pitch. An URANS method was then used, using the solver ANSYS-CFX. The spatial and temporal discretization have been studied to be used in future simulations. Blades’ motion was obtained through mesh deformation for pitch modification, and the main rotation was implemented through global rotation of a circular mesh domain, with general grid interface model at its boundaries. The following turbulence models were used laminar, kw - SST. And Langtry Menter transition model. Five experimental cases were used to assess models’ performance. Comparison was best for kw - SST. The two others predicted early stalls, especially the laminar model. Further simulations, for other conditions and pitch function are needed and are currently being carried out. Agreement with experimental data was found to be fairly good, event though discrepancies exist in some specific cases. Agreement level could not be related to a particular operational condition. Variable pitch was implemented for a tip speed ratio of 5, aiming at performance improvement primarily. Sinusoidal functions of different orders were tested. One of them obtained a performance increase of 52%. For this regime optimal pitch variation seems to require a very slight recirculation and an incidence decrease on upwind section, and an incidence increase on downwind section. The flow deceleration through turbine was found to be a primary factor in function performance evaluation. Finally torque required to set blades into motion around their quarter chord was compared with power coefficient. Its influence was found to be close to 0, or even positive

Texto completoThe Darrieus wind turbine has entered a period of renewed interest over the last years because it may stand for an alternative solution to produce electricity in urban areas. In particular, high solidity wind turbine can be chosen to take benefit from some of its key properties for use near populated city areas. Conversely, some aerodynamic problems arise. This type of wind turbine operates at low tip speed ratio for which dynamic stall has a very significant role. The goal of this work is to provide valuable data to complement the knowledge of the dynamic stall phenomenon that occurs on a vertical axis wind turbine in order to improve existing numerical models. This study relies on a combined analysis of numerical and experimental results. The numerical simulations are based on a bidimensional unsteady vortex panel method. Effects of viscosity are introduced by adding corrections computed with a semi-empirical dynamic stall model. The experimental work focuses on the dynamics of the shed vortices existing in the vicinity of the rotor as a result of dynamic stall. The set-up consists of a straight-bladed wind turbine tested in a wind tunnel. Unsteady pressure distribution measurements along the chord and velocity fields measurements by particle image velocimetry were carried out. Results indicate how the characteristics of dynamic stall are conditioned by the tip speed ratio. Stall inception delay, magnitude of the dynamic stall vortex effects and its convection velocity were evaluated. Blade/Vortex interaction was analyzed through the observation of the vortical system downstream of the rotor. In addition, a critical review of the suitability of the Leishman-Beddoes model to effectively simulate the effects of dynamic stall was accomplished

Texto completoIn many applications where premixed combustion is involved, the flame thickness is weak compared to the scales of the flow. This property allows to describe the flame frontevolution as an interface dynamics. In this manuscript some experiments are performed in order to check the validity of such models. The experiments are carried out in a Hele-Shaw burner. This quasi-bidimensional configuration allows for an accurate analysis ofthe flame front evolution. First, the dynamics of an initially flat flame propagating in aquiescent flow are analyzed. A quantitative comparison of an experimental flame evolution with the one predicted by a Michelson-Sivashinsky type equation is obtained for the firsttime. Moreover, the analytic pole solutions of this model allows us to predict some statisticproperties of the flame front. These predictions are shown to still be valid at large time, where the external noise plays an important role in the observed dynamics. In a second part, flame/burner interactions are investigated. A new vibroacoustic coupling mechanismis identified. Then, harnessing the properties of this vibroacoustic coupling, the flame issubmitted to an oscillating flow. It allows us to explore some characteristics of the flame response to a time dependent external forcing. Finally, the flame is submitted to a weaklyturbulent flow. The influence of the flow fluctuations intensity on the turbulent flamespeed is explored. The flame speed increase is shown to switch from a sublinear regime atsmall forcing to a superlinear one when the forcing intensity is approaching the laminar flame speed value
