Texto completoThe subject of the present work is the study of the paleochristian exegesis of the “tales” included in the Book of Daniel, in a pluridisciplinary perspective which examines the evidences coming from both iconography and literature. The work takes into account the documentation from the origins of iconography (end of the II century), to the so-called “Constantinian period”, including materials coming from every geographic context of ancient Christianity. The research is divided in three sections, according to the principal hermeneutic traditions of the “typological”, “allegoric” and “literary” reception of the biblical text, mainly highlighting the role assumed by the “tales” in the formation of the ancient martyrdom theology. The analysis assumes an historical-critical method, mainly focusing on the comparison between two different documentary categories, which attest the variety and the heterogeneity of the biblical interpretation activated in the first communities. The inclusion of the figurative source derives from its revaluation: more than “biblia pauperum”, the ancient iconography, produced in the context of liturgy, expresses an independent and original tradition of the “tales” reception. Under this point of view, the complex interpretation of the Book of Daniel offers a good paradigm to understand, in a wider sense, the processes determining the formation of paleochristian thought.

Texto completoThe expansion of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia, under the leadership of Alexander The Great, prompted the accession of Hellenic cultural dimensions throughout the West and Middle East in a process of cultural diffusion known as Hellenization. However, hellenistic cultural dominance was not without struggle Thus, this research has proposed as an hypothesis that the Old Testament book of Daniel is a result of a socio-religious experience that countered epicureanism by highlighting the principle of faithfulness to Yahweh. Daniel’s apocalypse offers a conception that the Jewish monotheistic deity interferes history in a conclusive manner, since in the end of time it will be judging all of the infidels (Dan 7: 13-14). Such philosophical system believed that the gods were in a state of ataraxia, blissfulness, serenity, antipathetic to any human feeling. Therefore, from a cultural approach of the religious phenomenon it has been scrutinized if the book of Daniel, written in an apocalyptic language, presents a proposal of socio-religious way of life posing an antithesis to the Epicurean doctrine while fostering the maintenance of a Jewish identity related to the divine figure of Yahweh in the second century BCE.

Texto completoIn this study I examine representations of antisemitism, fantasy, and cultural imperialism in the 1864 ballet The Little Humpbacked Horse, composed by Cesare Pugni and choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon. As the creative team adapted the story from verse to ballet, they literally morphed the titular character into new fantastical forms. They also added Jewish, Muslim, and other oriental characters and ended the ballet with a parade of the Russian nations. Drawing on the works of Richard S. Wortman, Julie Kalman, and Roger Bartra, I place these transformations in the context of a larger Russian ambivalence around the shift from a rural and woodland economy to an urban one, the inclusion of Eastern provinces in the rapidly expanding nation, and the emancipation – and inclusion of – internal minorities. I then explain how the music, choreography, and focus of the ballet change as the relevance of these mid-nineteenth century concerns fades.

Texto completoThe French Law about installations (Classified Installation for Environment protection CIEP) is generally understood as a compromise between the protection of economical and environmental interests. This dissertation analyses the terms of this social contract, and, in this aim, we study the different CIEP litigations facing judicial (civil and criminal) and administrative Courts. Then, it is put into evidence the structural difficulties to achieve this goal. This is mainly due to the missing of an effective representation of the Environment in front of these Courts in spite of unquestionable progresses in Law and Constitution. This work makes proposals for the rewriting the CIEP Law by a more comprehensive integration of the fundamental roots of the sustainable development, particularly the precaution principle and the participation of the concerned people. This involves extending strict liability to the precaution

Texto completoThis research combines a theoretical reconceptualization of the cultural dimensions of memory with the analysis of three artistic media that negotiate the refugee presence in Portugal between 1933 and 1945. The aim of this thesis is therefore twofold: on the one hand, it seeks to make a contribution to the ongoing attempt of widening the theoretical and methodological scope of memory studies. It therefore advances a translational perspective that challenges basic assumptions of the site-bound, nation-bound and identity-bound framework that has characterized most research on memory within the humanities since the 1980s. Rather than limiting memory to its potential to support a particular identity and selfimage of a community, it is conceived of as the outcome of translational processes that unfold in complex networks of signification, whose results might work in favor but also against established power relations. On the other hand, it presents the first systematic analysis of the remembrance and negotiation of the refugee presence within artistic media in Portugal. Portugal’s role as country of exile, transit station and open city for spies before and during World War II has recently been the subject not only of several academic studies, but also of newspaper articles and a number of expositions, films and novels. Rather than an exhaustive inventory of artistic media dealing with the topic, this study pursues an “archive of implication” (Rothberg, 2013, 2014) to understand how three of the most widely circulated and discussed artistic media implicate the memory of the refugee presence in reinforcing or challenging dominant notions of communality. Through a detailed close reading of Daniel Blaufuks’ interart-project Sob Céus Estranhos [Under strange skies] (2002/2007), Domingos Amaral’s novel Enquanto Salazar Dormia [While Salazar was sleeping] (2006) and João Canijo’s documentary Fantasia Lusitana [Lusitanian fantasy] (2010) this thesis seeks to give visibility to the plurality and heterogeneity of mnemonic practices and discourses in Portugal. The principal questions of this study are, first, if and how these artistic media mobilize different heterocultural networks of signification, and, second, if and how they develop different ways of implicating the refugee presence in the present and thereby challenge or reinforce established forms of communality and solidarity.
