AbstractReaction of 2-chloro-N-(methoxymethyl)benzimidazole 1 with zerovalent group 10 metal complexes in the presence of an additional proton source yielded, via an oxidative addition of the C2–Cl bond, complexes with a protic NH,NR-substituted (R=methoxymethyl) benzimidazolin-2-ylidene ligand. The oxidative addition of 1 to Ni0 and Pd0 complexes proceeded with the exclusive formation of the trans-configured complexes trans-[2]BF4 and trans-[3]BF4, respectively. Contrary to this observation, the reaction of 1 with a more substitution inert Pt0 complex leads, depending on the reaction temperature, to a mixture of cis-/trans-[4]BF4 or exclusively to trans-[4]BF4. The molecular structures of all three trans-configured complexes were determined.

The present investigation aims to improve the efficiency of fungal mono- and mixed cultures in removing organic pollutants and metals from sewage water (SW) for further maize plant response assessments. The reduction in the organic load from the SW was harnessed using a co-culture consortium consisting of Aspergillus niger (KB5), Sordariomycetes sp. (D10), and Coniochaetaceae sp. (LB3). The testing results had evinced removal of up to 88% of the organic matter and more than 96%, 91%, 80%, and 47.6%, of removal percentages for Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Cadmium (Cd), and Lead (Pb), respectively, with the developed fungal consortium [KB5 + D10 + LB3]. After treatment and lab experiments, a reuse of treated and untreated SW for plant irrigation was evaluated towards improving maize plant growth. Irrigation was conducted in pot experiments with three types of water: clean water (Control), untreated (USW), and treated SW by fungal consortia (TSW) and by station treatment plant STP (TSWP) using the randomized complete block (RCB) experimental design. Results of the pots trial revealed that the morphological parameters of SW-irrigated plants are slightly improved compared to water-irrigated plants. Data regarding assimilating area attributes indicated that the most significant enlargement of the assimilation area was observed with TSW-D (1/4) irrigation by 1051 cm2, followed by TSWP-D (0) by 953.96 cm2, then USW-D (1/4) by 716.54 cm2, as compared to plants irrigated with clean water (506.91 cm2). On average, the assimilation areas were larger by 51.76%, 46.86%, and 29.25% in TSW, USW, and TSWP-irrigated plants, respectively. Thus, SW irrigation supports the required qualities and quantities of microelements and water for plant growth. Oxidative stress assessment showed that irrigations with treated SW caused a significant decrease in both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, depicting that the treatment lowered the stress of sewage water.

Resumen
Computational chemistry has gained interest as a characterization tool to predict photoluminescence, reactivity and structural properties of organic and transition metal complexes. With the rise of methods including relativity, these studies have been expanded to the accurate modeling of luminescence spectra of complexes with considerable spin-orbit splitting due to heavy metal centers as well as the reaction pathways for these complexes to produce natural products such as hydrogen gas. These advances have led to the synthesis and utility of more effective catalysis as well as the development of more effective organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) through the incorporation of organometallic complexes as emitters instead of typical organic emitters. In terms of significant scientific advancement presented in this work is in relation to the discovery of significant spin-orbit splitting in a gold(I) alkylphosphine complex, where the splitting results in the states that emit in different colors of the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This work also reveals the discovery both computationally and experimentally, of a genuine polar-covalent bond between two-closed shell metals. This work highlights a complex with an incredibly short gold(I) – copper(I) intermetallic distance leading to a vibrational frequency and dissociation energy that is on par with those of other systems with single-bonded metal centers. Lastly, this work outlines a strategy for the production of hydrogen gas through the use of trinuclear cyclic coinage metal complexes as catalysis to split hydrohalic acids.

De nos jours, la chimie est utilisée comme outil général pour accéder (synthèse), contrôler (influence des paramètres) et comprendre (étude des propriétés) le matériau. Ceci est rendu possible grâce à deux approches : l'approche «Top- down» et l'approche « Bottom-up ». La première approche est une des bases de la nanotechnologie. La deuxième approche consiste en l'assemblage de systèmes moléculaires possédant des propriétés intrinsèques pour accéder à des matériaux avec de nouvelles propriétés. Ce concept est généralement appelé: «de la molécule au matériau »; et dans ce contexte, la chimie supramoléculaire occupe une position centrale. Le présent travail porte sur la synthèse et l'étude de propriétés des systèmes de métal-dithiolene comportant des ions métalliques et des lanthanides. Le premier chapitre est une introduction générale sur la chimie du dithiolene et des lanthanides. Le deuxième chapitre décrit la synthèse et la caractérisation de systèmes supramoléculaires basées sur des ligands dithiolene neutres. Dans ce chapitre, l'importance des groupes fonctionnels capables de former des interactions non covalentes sera discutée. Le troisième chapitre est consacré à la réactivité de ces ligands dithiolene neutres avec les métaux de transition (d10) tels que CU1, Hg11, et Au1. Ce chapitre décrira la synthèse de complexes supramoléculaires ainsi que leurs propriétés spectroscopiques. Le quatrième chapitre, s'intéresse à la réactivité de ces ligands vis-à-vis des lanthanides trivalents (Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Er), la caractérisation des complexes formés ainsi que les propriétés de luminescence en résultant. Nowadays, chemistry represents a general tool for accessing (synthesis), controlling (parameters influence) and understanding (study of properties) the material. This is allowed by two possible approaches: the "Top-down" and "Bottom-up". The first approach is a key to nanotechnology. The second approach consists in assembling small systems, with intrinsic properties, to build up macro system with interesting properties. This concept is generally termed as: "from mo/ecu/es to material” and in this context, supramolecular chemistry plays a crucial rote. The present work examines the synthesis and properties of dithiolene systems bearing metal ions and lanthanides. The first chapter is a general introduction on dithiolene chemistry and lanthanides. The second chapter deals with the synthesis and characterisation of supramolecular systems based on neutral dithioiene-like ligands. Ln this chapter importance of non-covalent interactions is discussed. The third chapter concerns the reactivity of these neutral dithiolen like ligands towards d10 transition metals (CU1, Hg11, AU1). This chapter will describe the synthesis of supramolecul complexes and their spectroscopic properties. The fourth chapter deals, with the reactivity of the ligands with lanthanide (Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Er) and the characterisation of Ln3+ -dithiolene complexes. The discussion will be oriented on the energy transfer process taking place in these coordination compounds ("Antenna Effect")

This dissertation covers the studies of two major topics: the photochemistry of mononuclear and multinuclear gold(I) complexes and synthetic approaches to tailor photophysical properties of cyclic trinuclear d10 complexes. First a detailed photochemical examination into the photoreactivity of neutral mononuclear and multinuclear gold(I) complexes is discussed, with the aim of gold nanoparticle size and shape control for biomedical and catalysis applications. Next is a comprehensive systematic synthetic approach to tailor the photophysical properties of cyclic trinuclear d10 complexes. This synthetic approach includes an investigation of structure-luminescence relationships between cyclic trinuclear complexes, an examination into their π-acid/π-base reactivity with heavy metal cations and an exploration into the photophysical properties of new heterobimetallic cyclic trinuclear complexes. These photophysical properties inspections are used to screen materials for their employment in molecular electronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and thin film transistors (OTFTs).

Elemental Na has been the tracer of choice for the generation of high altitude (mesospheric) guide stars because of its relatively large natural abundance and large absorption cross section. Dye based systems using Na are currently under development for several large aperture telescopes. However, robust solid state laser technology to generate high power narrow linewidth light at 589 nm has progressed slowly. Here we consider both the tracer and the transmitter technology and show that using either the K D1 line at 769 nm or the 372 nm line of Fe (a 5D-z 5F°) for the tracer may provide robust solutions until solid state Na transmitter technology can be more fully developed. The comparable performance is primarily due to the fact that both lines can be generated with existing solid state materials (Alexandrite, Ti:Sapphire).

A CO2-evaluation is made for landfill and Waste-to-Energy (WtE) concepts. Different concepts are identified and compared for their performance on energy and materials recovery. Performance indicators for WtE are compared; like energy efficiency, EXergy efficiency, the R1-D10 formula from the EU Waste Framework directive, and CO2-emission and avoidance. It is shown that, due to the biomass content and the avoidance effect due to the recovery of energy and materials, conventional WtE has a near zero CO2-emission per ton of waste. Optimised WtE can have a significant negative overall emission of 200–300 kgCO2/ton of waste. This means an absolute net avoidance of CO2 by WtE. The reduction relative to land filling is as much as 500–1200 kgCO2/ton of waste. The potential for optimisation of the energy recovery as well as the material recovery of the WtE infrastructure is demonstrated. If WtE is evaluated as a power plant, an optimised plant can have an emission of only 0,336 kgCO2/kWh, lower than a gas fired electrical power plant, and this absolute figure does not include the avoided landfill emissions. With CHP this can be reduced even further. The actual potential of electricity production from WtE for the EU-15 is calculated to be over 7,5% of total electricity production. Additionally heat and the metal recoveries could be doubled.

Abstract The peculiarities of plasma treatment of agglomerated YSZ powders as well as mechanically pretreated metal and metal alloy powder with the aim of their spheroidization and subsequent thermal spraying of produced HOSP powders are analyzed. Formation of splats from hollow droplets deserves a special attention for thermal spraying. In this case, immediately prior to particle – substrate collision, we have a droplet that consists of a liquid shell enclosing a gas cavity heated to a temperature close to the particle surface temperature. The paper presented includes the results of computer simulation and model experiments carried out under full control of pre-impact key physical parameters (KPPs): temperature Tp0, velocity up0, external diameter of droplet Dp0, thickness of its shell Δp0 , temperature of substrate Tb0, and its surface state. It was shown that formation of splats from hollow droplets proceeds in a manner more stable compared to the case of “dense” molten particles obtained from fused and crushed compacts, and this provides for a more perfect splat-substrate, splat-splat and coating-substrate interface. Advantages of hollow metal, metal alloy and metal oxide powders over corresponding dense powders for thermal spraying by the example of thermal barrier coatings are discussed. Since the splat formation process involving hollow droplets proceeds, following their high-velocity impact deformation on the base/substrate, in an explosive manner, this type of spraying can be referred as HOSP micro explosive thermal spraying.

Rivers have a significant role in the coastal sediment budget as the primary sources of natural sediment. Further, it is essential to comprehend the minimum grain size threshold, also known as the littoral cutoff diameter (LCD), in order to determine the actual contribution of river sediment load to the littoral beach. This study aims to present the LCD as a crucial variable worth taking into account at the regional level when budgeting for littoral sediments. Maha Oya River located on a severely eroding coastline between Negombo and Chilaw on the western coast of Sri Lanka was focus in this study. Here, we collected forty-four beach samples from the swash zone and berm crest during two sediment sampling surveys in March and October 2022. Concurrently, a streamer-type sediment trap was placed at 2 km upper streams of Maha Oya River to capture the bottom to 1.5 meters river sediment load. Sediment samples were sieved by mechanical sieving method in the classic Wentworth grain size scale (63-2000 μm). Additionally, the statistical properties of a grain size distribution, including LCD, skewness, kurtosis, and median grain size (D50), were investigated for sediment samples. Average D50 value on the beach was found to be 394 μm of medium sand that was moderately sorted, symmetrical, and mesokurtic, compared to 655 μm of coarse sand that was poorly sorted, fine skewed, and mesokurtic in river sediment. The LCD values was 141 μm on the beach studied herein, that indicated 10% of the river sediment in the lowest 1.5 m layer may not have remained on the beach in any significant quantity. Therefore, by using the concept of LCD, it is possible to quantify the potential overestimation of river sediment loads to the coastal sediment budget.

Resumen
Vandentvarkos ūkyje inžineriniams tinklams naudojamos įvairios medžiagos, kurioms pagaminti, eksploatuoti bei utilizuoti būtinos energijos sąnaudos, o šių procesų metu į aplinką išsiskiria teršalai. Būvio ciklo analizė atlikta naudojantis kompiuteriniais modeliais, sudarytais SimaPro 7.3 programa ir remiantis ISO14040 rekomendacijomis. Nustatytas plačiausiai vandentiekyje naudojamų polietileninių (d110 mm) ir kaliojo ketaus (DN100) vandentiekio vamzdžių galimas poveikis aplinkai. Tyrimai atlikti taikant nustatytas sistemos ribas, į kurias buvo įtraukta žaliavų ir vamzdžių gamyba, palikimas grunte ir transportavimas tarp skirtingų būvio ciklų etapų, pasirinktas tirti funkcinis vienetas – 500 metrų vamzdžių ilgio. Gamybos ciklas įvertintas modeliuojant pagrindinius technologinius procesus: polietileno granulių ekstruziją ir geležies rūdos lydimą bei taikant reikiamus elektros energijos ir šilumos energijos kiekius. Po 50 metų eksploatacijos trukmės vamzdžiai paliekami grunte. Atlikus modeliavimą ir palyginus polietileninius ir kaliojo ketaus vamzdžius, nustatyta, kad vertinant bendrą poveikį aplinkai, didesnę neigiamą įtaką turi kaliojo ketaus vamzdžiai. Tyrime poveikis aplinkai vertinamas pagal 7 teršalų: stibio, sieros dioksido, fosfatų, anglies dioksido, trichlorofluorometano, eteno ir metano ekvivalentus.

Resumen
In order to characterize the relationship between hydrodynamic and thermal fragmentation of molten metallic fuels with the interaction of the coolant of sodium in the wide range of thermal and hydrodynamic conditions, the present paper focuses on a series of fragmentation experiments of a single molten copper droplets (1∼5 g) with wide ambient Weber number (102 ∼ 614) and superheat condition (15 ∼ 574 °C), which penetrated a sodium pool. The intensive fragmentations of single molten copper droplets were clearly observed even at the instantaneous contact interface temperatures (Ti) below the melting point besides higher Ti. The size distributions of molten droplet with high Weber number somewhat incline to be less than those with low Weber number in the same thermal condition. When approximately Wea>200, the effect of hydrodynamic fragmentation becomes predominant over that of thermal fragmentation in the low superheat condition. In the high Weber number or high superheating condition separately, the size distributions of the single metal droplet and jet reported by Schins’ group with different mass of thousand times can keep very similar. Moreover, the values of Dm/D0 must be quite small. The relatively larger size distributions of the single metal droplet and the jet reported by Nishimura et al. will only arise in the both low Weber number and low superheating condition.
