Resumen

The aim of the study: to assess the influence of genetic and environmental factors using twin studies and evaluate the associations of SCARB1 gene variants (rs11057841) with AMD and MPOD. Material and methods: a total of 108 healthy twins (56 MZ and 52 DZ twins) were tested in this study. The MPOD was measured using the one-wavelength reflectometry method. Fundus reflectance (Visucam 500, reflectance of a single 460 nm wavelength) was used to measure the MPOD levels, MPOD parameters including max and mean optical density (OD), and area and volume. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results: we detected a positive correlation of MPOD in the right and left eyes in MZ twin pairs (r = 0.830 and r = 0.860, respectively) (p < 0.0001) and a negative correlation of MPOD in the right and left eyes in DZ twin pairs (r = 0.314 and r = 0.408, respectively) (p < 0.05). The study was able to identify statistically significant differences in mean MPOD values in the right and left eyes between subjects with a wild-type CC genotype and a CT genotype with a risk allele. A decrease in the mean MPOD value was observed in group II with a CT genotype (0.110 d.u.) compared with the CC genotype (0.117 d.u.) in the right eye (p = 0.037) and in the left eye with a CT genotype (0.109 d.u.) compared with a CC genotype in the subjects (0.114 d.u.) (p = 0.038). In the right eye, in group II (0.101–0.128 d.u.), those with a CT genotype (n = 6) with one risk allele had a statistically significantly lower (0.110 d.u.) mean average MPOD value compared with those with a wild-type CC genotype (n = 25) (0.117 d.u.) (p = 0.037). Conclusion: this twin study showed a strong heritability of the retina pigment, which was 86% prevalent in Lithuania. Individuals with a CT genotype of the SCARB1 rs11057841 with a risk allele had statistically significantly lower mean MPOD values in both eyes compared to subjects with a wild-type CC genotype.

Resumen

Autosomal dominant polycystic disease (ADPKD) is the most frequent monogenic kidney disease. It causes progressive renal failure, endothelial dysfunction, and hypertension, all of which are strictly linked to oxidative stress (OxSt). Treatment with tolvaptan is known to slow the renal deterioration rate, but not all the molecular mechanisms involved in this effect are well-established. We evaluated the OxSt state in untreated ADPKD patients compared to that in tolvaptan-treated ADPKD patients and healthy subjects. OxSt was assessed in nine patients for each group in terms of mononuclear cell p22phox protein expression, NADPH oxidase key subunit, MYPT-1 phosphorylation state, marker of Rho kinase activity (Western blot) and heme oxygenase (HO)-1, induced and protective against OxSt (ELISA). p22phox protein expression was higher in untreated ADPKD patients compared to treated patients and controls: 1.42 ± 0.11 vs. 0.86 ± 0.15 d.u., p = 0.015, vs. 0.53 ± 0.11 d.u., p < 0.001, respectively. The same was observed for phosphorylated MYPT-1: 0.96 ± 0.28 vs. 0.68 ± 0.09 d.u., p = 0.013 and vs. 0.47 ± 0.13 d.u., p < 0.001, respectively, while the HO-1 expression of untreated patients was significantly lower compared to that of treated patients and controls: 5.33 ± 3.34 vs. 2.08 ± 0.79 ng/mL, p = 0.012, vs. 1.97 ± 1.22 ng/mL, p = 0.012, respectively. Tolvaptan-treated ADPKD patients have reduced OxSt levels compared to untreated patients. This effect may contribute to the slowing of renal function loss observed with tolvaptan treatment.

Resumen

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases with serious sequelae. Every year, 120–500 amputations are performed per 1 million people worldwide. The severe consequences of amputation include the mental trauma caused by loss of a limb, disability and a real risk of death for the patient, since the mortality rate associated with the development of gangrene remains extremely high. PAD is most frequently located in the femoral-popliteal segment, which is the longest vascular segment in the human body. Over the past decade, the endovascular approach has become the main therapeutic strategy for PAD, given its lower risk of complications and comparable efficacy to open interventions. Femoral-popliteal stenting provides advantages over balloon angioplasty, preventing vessel wall recoil and providing necessary frame support. This review aims to describe the latest progress of endovascular surgery for the treatment of femoral-popliteal artery disease and to discuss its limitations. The introduction of nitinol stents and new drug coated stents into clinical practice has improved the results of femoral-popliteal endovascular treatment. Despite this, stent failure remains a pressing problem that significantly impacts the results of endovascular treatment of atherosclerotic lesions of lower limb arteries.Received 6 June 2019. Background. Ischaemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Selective intracarotid cerebral hypothermia is one of the promising methods to prevent ischaemic stroke. However, currently available studies do not allow us to conclude the effectiveness of applying this method in humans and assess its effect on the system temperature.Aim. To investigate the effect of selective intracarotid cerebral hypothermia on the size of ischaemic stroke in large pigs, determining the optimal period of hypothermia and the severity of the effects of intracarotid hypothermia on the system temperature.Methods. The study was conducted on mini-pigs weighing 30–70 kg and included two stages. During the first stage, pigs were divided into two groups: control (n = 4) and intracarotid hypothermia for 3 h, exciting periods before and after reperfusion (n = 2). During the second stage, animals were also divided into two groups: hypothermia group within 1.5 h before reperfusion (n = 2) and hypothermia group within 1.5 h after reperfusion (n = 2). The technique for modelling ischaemic stroke was the same as in all groups and consisted of frontotemporal craniotomy and compression of the middle cerebral artery for 3 h. Intracarotid hypothermia was performed by infusing + 4 °C NaCl solution in the ascending pharyngeal artery. At 48 h after starting the experiment, a brain magnetic resonance imaging scan was performed to determine the size of the stroke.Results. The mean size of the stroke focusing in the control group was 10.75%, in the hypothermia group before reperfusion (10.95%) and in the hypothermia group after reperfusion (1.65%) of the volume of the cerebral hemisphere. The stroke size in the hypothermia group for 3 h could not be determined due to complications that developed in animals intraoperatively and postoperatively. The effect of intracarotid hypothermia on the systemic temperature in an animal weighing 65 kg was 0.4 °C.Conclusion. Based on the study results, a marked decrease in the focus of ischaemic stroke was found with the use of intracarotid hypothermia within 1.5 h after reperfusion. N.° 038-2020, para finalmente concluir si la misma es aplicable al contrato de trabajo. In this paper, the author analyzes the institution of the excessive onerousness of the provision and the hardship theory in labor relations, this in the context of the economic crisis generated by the Coronavirus – COVID-19 pandemic, the health emergency and the state of emergency, as well as its manifestations in ordinary labor regulations and in D.U. N.° 038-2020, to finally conclude if it is applicable to the employment contract.

N° 020-2020, a efectos de no presentar la fianza bancaria y/o patrimonial en los casos en que el Estado sea la parte afectada con la medida cautelar, trasgrediendo la citada norma con rango de Ley, así como los criterios de la Corte Suprema de Justicia de la República, como del Tribunal Constitucional.

Resumen

The paper contains the results of daily monitoring of the ozone layer condition and level of ultraviolet irradiation within the territory of Ukraine in 2018. The analysis was carried out using the values of total ozone content measured by a satellite device Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and estimated ultraviolet values / ultraviolet index. The monitoring was implemented for a regular grid with 1̊ spatial resolution and separately for grid nodes matching the geographic grids of Ukrainian administrative centres. Most of the year total ozone values slightly differed from average long-term values and varied from 270 to 370 Dobson units (D.u.). The paper defines and establishes the reasons for two positive ozone anomalies for the period from February, 24 to March, 4 which resulted in two independent processes of ozone-rich air masses inflow from north. Advective air masses were characterized by high ozone content, which was typical for cold season. First air inflow lasted from February, 24 till February, 26 and caused ozone content increase over the north-western part of Ukraine to 490 D.u. The second inflow over the northern and western parts of Ukraine which lasted from February, 28 to March, 4 caused ozone content increase to 500 D.u. Ozone layer instability over the territory of Ukraine observed from January till April was replaced by slight ozone field variations. From May until the end of the year maximum deviations from average values did not exceed 0.5σ by absolute values. It was established that minimum and maximum ranges of ozone content values constantly changed, however, lower values were observed mainly over the eastern and south-eastern regions. Observations indicated the total ozone spread increase which is typical for seasonal increase of concentrations. Stability of ozone layer total values during the most of the year and absence of significant negative deviations led to ultraviolet index not exceeding 7. In summer, with the highest solar irradiance near the earth's surface, stable ozone content varying within average long-term values not more than by 0.2σ, prevented dangerous ultraviolet index values exceed. Therefore, no high or extremely high ultraviolet irradiation values were observed during the year.

Resumen

The study presents the results of analysis of spatiotemporal distribution of updated total ozone climate normals for the period of 1991–2020. It analyzes the changes since the last total ozone climate normals estimate conducted for the period of 1981–2010. The daily data retrieved using TOMS and OMI satellite instruments over the territory of Ukraine allowed calculation of multiyear average values, climate normals for each day of the year, amplitudes, phases and determination coefficients for total ozone seasonal variations. Use of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data allowed establishment of the relation between total ozone and meridional wind changes in the lower stratosphere. The research shows the existence of the regions with higher/lower total ozone content that are not in line with the characteristics of latitudinal distribution. They are formed due to more frequent recurrence of air advection with ozone content that is not typical for the Ukrainian territory, mostly from January to March. The study describes a typical temporal distribution of the total ozone climate normals varying from 285 to 375 Dobson units (D.u.) and analyzes the statistic patterns of deviations distribution and recurrence of extremely high/low total ozone content. The paper emphasizes a small variation of total ozone over the territory of Ukraine. The authors also researched the features of spatial distribution of seasonal variation amplitudes varying within the range of 42–46 D.u. and the specifics of maximum values periods observed from 19 to 30 of March, depending on a region. It was established that, since the previous update of the climate normals, the total ozone decreased for all months with its maximum decrease of about 8 D.u. in winter. However, no increase of recurrence of ultraviolet radiation high levels was observed. Total ozone changes are mainly associated with shifts of meridional wind values to negative ones. This process indicates the increase of recurrence of air advection from the north. The paper also emphasizes the complexness of total ozone changes during the period of research and the lack of consistency of such changes with the circulation factor of summer months.

The paper presents main results of total ozone column (TOC) and levels of ultraviolet irradiance daily monitoring conducted for the Ukrainian territory in 2019. Monitoring and analysis were performed using TOC data measured by the satellite Ozone Monitoring Instrument (the OMI) and estimated values of ultraviolet index. The research was made on the regular grid with 1° spatial resolution and separately for geographical coordinates of centers of Ukrainian administrative regions. In 2019 the TOC ranged within a multiyear average standard with and its average value was equal to 260–360 D.u. During winter ozone concentration reached its highest values due to intensification of Brewer-Dobson circulation. Weakened polar vortex and ozone-rich air masses advection at the upper atmospheric levels which transport high ozone concentrations, resulted in the TOC positive anomalies emergence over Ukraine. The air masses penetrated Ukrainian territory from the north-west and this led to emergence anomalously high TOC values during a number of periods: February 23–24, March 2, March 12–14, March 26. In these periods 450–500 D.u. was a typical ozone content. Seasonal TOC decrease, observed from April to June, was caused by a weakened Brewer-Dobson circulation and intensification of photochemical ozone loss. Nevertheless, TOC deviations from average standard were negligible and this resulted in absence of very high UV-index values. The highest UV-index values did not reach 7 units. In July the TOC was slightly higher than usual concentrations, which was probably caused by dynamic factors. Such TOC values influenced the level of ultraviolet irradiance and the UV-index varied within 3–4 units' range which is typical for Ukraine in April–May. Such ozone state in 2019 made it impossible for UV-index to reach extremely high levels, especially during the summer period. Further TOC changes were characterized by typical seasonal ozone decrease with minimum values observed in October resulted from formation and intensification of polar vortex. Average minimum values in October amounted to 260–270 D.u., however, it is a typical TOC content for this period with a relative deviation from the standard constituting about -0.3σ. Seasonal ozone increase in 2019 started in mid-November. At the end of December the first high positive deviations happened. The highest of them reached close to anomalous 2–2.4σ values.

Resumen

Regulator of G protein signaling-2 (RGS-2) plays a key role in the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) angiotensin II (Ang II) signaling. NO and cGMP exert a vasodilating action also through activation and binding to RGS-2 of cGMP dependent protein kinase 1-α, which phosphorylates RGS-2 and dephosphorylates myosin light chain. In Bartter’s/Gitelman’s patients (BS/GS) Ang II related signaling and vasomotor tone are blunted. Experiments were planned to explore whether RGS-2 may play a role in BS/GS vascular hyporeactivity. NO metabolites and cGMP urinary excretion were also measured. Mononuclear cells (PBM) from six BS/GS patients and six healthy controls were used. PBM RGS-2 mRNA and RGS-2 protein were increased in BS/GS: 0.47 ± 0.06 d.u. vs 0.32 ± 0.04, (p &lt; 0.006) (RGS-2 mRNA), and 0.692 ± 0.02 vs 0.363 ± 0.06 (p &lt; 0.0001) (RGS2 protein). Incubation of PBM with Ang II increased RGS-2 protein in controls (from 0.363 ± 0.06 d.u. to 0.602 ± 0.05; p &lt; 0.0001) but not in BS/GS (from 0.692 ± 0.02 to 0.711 ± 0.02). NO2-/NO3- and cGMP urinary excretion were increased in BS/GS (0.46 ± 0.13 vs 0.26 ± 0.05 μmol/μmol of urinary creatinine, p &lt; 0.005, and 0.060 ± 0.030 vs 0.020 ± 0.01 p &lt; 0.009, respectively). These results demonstrate that RGS-2 is increased and maximally stimulated in BS/GS and human RGS-2 system reacts as predicted by knockout mice experiments. This is the first report of RGS-2 level in a human clinical condition characterized by altered vascular tone, underlines the importance of RGS-2 as a key regulator element for Ang II signaling and provides insight into the links between BS/GS genetic abnormalities and abnormal vascular tone regulation.

Resumen

This work provides an investigation based on a fast estimation of the degree of unbalance (D.U.%) and the differential leakage factor (σ0) of multiphase electrical machine windings. This analysis is carried out by exploring almost 5000 combinations in terms of number of slots, pole pairs, phases and layers. The variability of the leakage factor is examined for each condition, defining an optimal region for its minimization. As a result, an extended mapping is carried out for both the degree of unbalance and the leakage factor, providing a useful tool during the early design stage of winding configurations for multiphase electric machines, even with slight asymmetries. The results obtained from this investigation are validated through finite element analysis and demonstrate that the differential leakage factor can be significantly reduced by adopting winding configurations with slight asymmetries, which also represent a valuable alternative in the electrical machine design.

Modern methods of rock evaluation, such as Rock Quality Index (RQD), Rock Mass Rating (RMR) and Rock Mass Classification System (Q), are used within the field of geotechnical surveys. RQD was determined by D.U. Deere in 1963, as a simple classification system of rock mass stability. While using RQD index five classes of rocks (A-E) are determined. Q value can be determined in different ways: during mapping in underground excavations, on the surface or alternatively – on basis of core description. Dividing the underground excavations into several parts might be required during mapping, so that variation of Q value is moderate in each section, meaning that such variation should not exceed the rock class variation index according to the reinforcement scheme. During excavation works single blasting often represents natural section for individual mapping. A variation may take place in sections of several meters, but for showing this variation histograms can be used during mapping.

Abstract This article explores the textual history and genealogical claims in the Quanzhou Qianfo xinzhu zhuzushi song 泉州千佛新著諸祖師頌 (Or.8210/S.1635), a collection of encomia composed by Wendeng 文僜 (d. 972) that documents the formation of the so-called “southern” Chan lineage and provides a crucial link between the Baolin zhuan 寶林傳 and the Zutang ji 祖堂集. The focus of this paper is on reexamining the potentially layered nature of Wendeng’s work based on the preface by Huiguan 慧觀 (d.u.), internal evidence from the Dunhuang manuscript, and related accounts in Chan records and local gazetteers. In addition, this study investigates the genealogical glosses in S.1635 and suggests that these were probably not authored by Wendeng and therefore cannot be taken as evidence of his understanding of the pedigree of the presumed successors to Huineng 慧能 (638–713).

Background: Leprosy is a chronic infectious granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The disease mainly affects peripheral nervous system, the skin and other tissues such as the muscles, bones and joints, eyes, reticuloendothelial system, testis etc. To reduce global load of leprosy, it is essential to have an early and proper diagnosis by clinical and histopathological correlation followed by proper and complete treatment. Aims and Objectives were 1) to study histopathological spectrum of various subtypes of leprosy, 2) to study the age and gender wise incidence of different subtypes of leprosy, and 3) to assess the concordance between clinical and histological diagnosis in cases of leprosy using Ridley-Jopling scale.Methods: A retrospective observational study of 126 skin biopsies diagnosed as leprosy over a period of one year from August 2020 to July 2021 at P. D.U. Medical College and Hospital, Rajkot, Gujarat.Results: In this study, most of cases occurred in age group (21-40) years (50.8%) and showed marked male predominance with M:F ratio=2.7:1. Lepromatous leprosy (40.5%) was the most common histopathological type of leprosy. Maximum clinicopathological correlation seen in HL (100%), LL (90%) and TT (71.4%).Conclusions: Histopathological examination of skin biopsies and clinicopathological correlation both are essential for early and accurate diagnosis and typing of leprosy which is helpful in prevention of deformities and drug resistance by early and appropriate treatment.

Anger and emotional regulation can be a reaction to a perceived internal or external provocation and can be psychological interpretation of having been offended, wronged or denied and a tendency to react through retaliation. Whereas mental health means an absence of mental illness and can be measured through usage of different scales or inventories. Present study is an attempt to assess mental health, anger and emotional regulation among early and late adolescents including both male and female students. Method: To understand present aim of the study a total sample of 120 were taken from Delhi University (D.U) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). We further divided our sample into early adolescent aged 13-15 yrs. and late adolescents aged 16-19 yrs. Further sample was split on the basis of gender, thus 60 subjects were divided into 30 male adolescent and 30 female adolescents in both the groups (2×2 factorial design). Tools Used: (1). PGI Health Questionnaire: developed by Verma, Wig, Parshad (1978) (2). The Clinical Anger Scale (CAS) developed by Snell (1995) (3). Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) developed by Gross and John (2003). Result: It was found that early and late adolescents did not differ significantly on the measure of mental health. However while comparing early and late adolescents on the measure of Clinical Anger, it was found that there was a significant difference between the two groups. Clinical anger was found higher in age range of 13-15 as compared to 16-19. Female were found higher than male on the measure of mental health. Ordination can be said to be the core of Buddhism and maintaining this tradition is the key to maintaining Buddhism. This was the realization of the monastics in early 19th century Korea such as Paekp’a (1767–1852), Taeŭn (1780–1841), and Manha (d.u.) who were the pioneers in reviving the ordination tradition at a time when the saṃgha must have suffered a severe decline of this all too important tradition. Among these three monks, there were some commonalities such as the common geography of Chirisan area in the Hoam region where they started this movement and the fact that Paekp’a and Taeŭn, belonged to the Pyŏngyang lineal clan, the lineal descendants of the great masters Hyujŏng and P’yŏnyang. The effort to revitalize the ordination tradition by Paekp’a and other monks were successful in establishing their lineal clan and, at the same time, significantly contributed to securing their lineage within the history of Korea Buddhism. However, because Paekp’a’s method of the ten wholesome precepts was seen to be different from the traditional methods of ordination, its influence was. Taeŭn’s methods, on the other hand, by borrowing notions from the Brahmā’s Net Sutra which allowed monks to revitalize their lineal clan through one’s own effort, drew support from eminent monks and became widely practiced. Similarly, the lineage that was formed by Manha by traveling to China on being recognized for its legitimacy came to be established as part of the mainline of Korean Buddhism. While such methods were successful in responding to the dire situation of the early 19th century, this movement also provided the foundation for the continuation to the modern period the traditional orthodox lineage that was started some 300 years earlier.

Resumen

Evidence on cellular/molecular mechanisms leading to atrial fibrillation (AF) are scanty. Increased expression of Rho kinase (ROCK) and myosin-phosphatase-target subunit-1 (MYPT-1), ROCK activity’s marker, were shown in AF patients, which correlated with connexin 40 (Cx40) expression, membrane protein of heart gap junctions, key for rapid action potential’s cell–cell transfer. AF is the most frequent arrhythmia in dialysis patients who present increased MYPT-1 phosphorylation, which correlates with left ventricular (LV) mass. Given ROCK’s established role in cardiovascular–renal remodeling, induction of impaired cell-to-cell coupling/potential conduction promoting AF initiation/perpetuation, we evaluated in dialysis patients with AF, MYPT-1 phosphorylation, Cx40 expression, and their relationships to support their involvement in AF. Mononuclear cells’ MYPT-1 phosphorylation, Cx40 expression, and the ROCK inhibitor fasudil’s effect were assessed in dialysis patients with AF (DPAFs), dialysis patients with sinus rhythm (DPs), and healthy subjects (C) (western blot). M-mode echocardiography assessed LV mass and left atrial systolic volume. DPAF’s phospho-MYPT-1 was increased vs. that of DPs and C (1.57 ± 0.17 d.u. vs. 0.69 ± 0.04 vs. 0.51 ± 0.05 respectively, p < 0.0001). DP’s phospho-MYPT-1 was higher vs. that of C, p = 0.009. DPAF’s Cx40 was higher vs. that of DPs and C (1.23 ± 0.12 vs. 0.74 ± 0.03 vs. 0.69 ± 0.03, p < 0.0001). DPAF’s phospho-MYPT-1 correlated with Cx40 (p < 0.001), left atrial systolic volume (p = 0.013), and LV mass (p = 0.014). In DPAFs, fasudil reduced MYPT-1 phosphorylation (p < 0.01) and Cx40 expression (p = 0.03). These data point toward ROCK and Cx40’s role in the mechanism(s) leading to AF in dialysis patients. Exploration of the ROCK pathway in AF could contribute to AF generation’s mechanistic explanations and likely identify potential pharmacologic targets for translation into treatment.

Background. The Ross operation was first proposed in 1967 by D. Ross, and numerous studies have shown that it has excellent long-term results. However, in some patients, it can lead to late dilatation of the pulmonary autograft, which in turn can contribute to repeat operations. To avoid this complication, technical modifications of the Ross operation have been proposed. Aim. To evaluate the immediate and five-year outcomes of the modified Ross surgery in adults. Methods. This retrospective study included patients aged 18 years and older with aortic valve lesions who underwent a modified Ross procedure by one surgeon between January 2014 and December 2019. The median follow-up period was 23 (12–68) months. Results. The study included 43 adult patients. The average age of the patients was 40.0 ± 11.7 years, and 33 (76.7%) were men. The main cause of aortic valve dysfunction was severe aortic regurgitation (32 patients, 74.4%). Infective endocarditis was diagnosed as a cause of aortic valve pathology in 13 (30.2%) patients. Bicuspid aortic valve was present in 29 cases (67.4%). In two cases (4.7%), mini-sternotomy (‘T-shape’) was performed. Ten (23.2%) patients underwent combined interventions. The median duration of cardiopulmonary bypass was 143 (129–160) minutes, and duration of aortic cross-clamp was 116 (109–131) minutes. The autologous inclusion technique was used in 22 (51.2%) cases and the Dacron inclusion technique in 21 (48.8%) cases. Outcomes included no in-hospital mortality, acute renal failure requiring haemodialysis in three patients (7%), pacemaker implantation in two (4.7%), resternotomy for bleeding and stroke in one patient (2.3%) and perioperative myocardial injury in two (4.7%). The five-year overall survival, freedom from reoperation and freedom from dilatation of the ascending aorta or pulmonary autograft ≥ 5 cm after the modified Ross operation were 97.4%, 100.0% and 100.0%, respectively. Conclusion. Modified Ross surgery in adults has excellent immediate outcomes with no in-hospital mortality. The five-year overall survival, freedom from reoperation and freedom from aortic dilatation or pulmonary autograft were 97.4%, 100.0% and 100.0%, respectively.Received 15 February 2021. The ability to store large amounts of electrical energy is of increasing importance with the growing fraction of electricity generation from intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar. We have developed high performance flow batteries based on the aqueous redox behavior of small organic and metalorganic molecules, e.g. [1-9]. These redox active materials can be inexpensive and exhibit rapid redox kinetics, high solubilities, and long lifetimes, although short lifetimes are more common [7, 10]. We will discuss the economic tradeoff between upfront capital cost and periodic chemical replacement cost [11]. We discuss the very few chemistries with long enough calendar life for practical application in stationary storage [3-6, 9], and on the prospects for reversing capacity fade by recomposing decomposed molecules [8, 12]. Objective: To evaluate the effect of intracoronary iopromide (Ultravist®, Bayer, AG, Leverkusen, Germany) during pharmaco-cold ex vivo preservation of a donor heart on the restoration of heart pumping function and cardiomyocyte metabolism in the early post-transplant period.Methods: Black-and-white calves aged 3 months were used as an experimental model. In the control group, pharmaco-cold preservation of the donor heart was performed by injecting 2 liters of custodiol (Custodiol®, Dr. Franz Köhler Chemie GmbH, Bensheim, Germany) into the aortic root. The hearts were then stored in an appropriate solution at 0 to 1°C for 2 hours. In the experimental group (n = 6), a solution of iopromide and custodiol were injected into the aortic root at a ratio of 50:50 under a pressure of 70-80 mm Hg for 5 minutes after 120 minutes of preservation. Then the coronary bed was washed with 1 liter of custodiol at a pressure of 40 mm Hg and orthotopic heart transplantation was performed. In the post-transplant period, the parameters of central hemodynamics, myocardial oxygen consumption, and the levels of myocardial ischemia markers (troponin I, creatine phosphokinase-MB, lactate dehydrogenase) were assessed.Results: Twelve orthotopic heart transplantations were performed during the study. In 120 minutes after the restoration of spontaneous cardiac activity, the level of cardiac output was 5.11 [4.99; 5.41] L/min and 5.77 [4.97; 6.62] L/min (p = 0.0009) in the control and experimental groups, respectively. Changes in the concentration of lactate dehydrogenase, troponin I and lactate in the blood flowing from the coronary sinus were significantly higher in the early reperfusion period. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups (p > 0.05). Myocardial oxygen consumption was significantly reduced at reperfusion. However, the initial values were restored by reperfusion minute 60 without any significant intergroup difference (p > 0.05).Conclusion: We established the safety of intracoronary iopromide administration for pharmaco-cold ex vivo preservation of the donor heart. Intracoronary administration of iopromide solution does not affect the restoration of the pumping function of the heart or metabolism in cardiomyocytes in the early post-transplant period. To know the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity in low birth weight and preterm neonates and study the association between presence of risk factors with incidence of retinopathy of prematurity.It was a hospital based cross-sectional study carried out in 500 newborns having gestational age ≤ 36 weeks or birth weight ≤2.5kg presenting in OPD at G.T. Sheth Eye Hospital, P. D.U. Government Medical College, Rajkot. During 2021-2022 where 500 neonates (≤36 weeks gestational age and ≤2.5kg gm birth weight) were screened as per ICROP guidelines during the procedure after approval of neonatologist/Paediatrician. Informed verbal consent was taken from Patient’s parents or Guardian. And History was taken along with risk factors according to proforma. Anterior segment and dilated detailed fundus examination was done with indirect ophthalmoscopy and 20D lens with all aseptic precautions. Data was recorded and analysis of the data was done using student t- test and chi square test to find p value of the data to the significance of the study results.The incidence of ROP in any stage was 8% in our study which is less than other studies conducted in India. Mean Gestational age among ROP positive neonates was 31.76 weeks (range 27 to 33 weeks). Incidence of APROP in our study was 25% among ROP of any stages. Mean gestational age and birth weight for APROP in our study was 30.4 weeks and 1.77kg respectively. Low birth weight and prematurity were the most important risk factors for developing any ROP. Other significantly associated risk factors in our study were respiratory distress syndrome and age at which oxygen therapy givenIncidence of ROP in our study is less than other studies which is due to less awareness among parents for retinopathy of prematurity and its risk factors. Most of the patients who developed ROP were exposed to oxygen at very early post conceptional age. This shows that rather than oxygen therapy alone age at which oxygen is given is more important.

Murphy, D.L. Longo, M. Anver, S. Hale, J.J. Oppenheim, and J.M. Wang. 1995. J. Immunol. 155:1184.) that the acute phase protein serum amyloid A (SAA) is a potent chemoattractant for human leukocytes in vitro and mouse phagocytes in vivo. To identify the signaling mechanisms, we evaluated patterns of cross-desensitization between SAA and other leukocyte chemoattrctants. We found that the chemotactic bacterial peptide, N-formyl- methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP), was able to specifically attenuate Ca2+ mobilization in human phagocytes induced by SAA, but only at very high concentrations, suggesting that SAA uses a low affinity fMLP receptor. Here we demonstrate that SAA selectively induced Ca2+ mobilization and migration of HEK cells expressing FPRL1, a human seven-transmembrane domain phagocyte receptor with low affinity for fMLP, and high affinity for lipoxin A4. Furthermore, radiolabeled SAA specifically bound to human phagocytes and FPRL1-transfected 293 cells. In contrast, SAA was not a ligand or agonist for FPR, the high affinity fMLP receptor. Thus, SAA is the first chemotactic ligand identified for FPRL1. Our results suggest that FPRL1 mediates phagocyte migration in response to SAA.

Background: In 2008, the hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) initiative labeled central-line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) as preventable “never events” that could no longer be reimbursed by Medicare. However, some patients have inherent unpreventable etiologies for bacteremia, such as obstructive biliary malignancies. We assessed the number of CLABSIs that were reasonably preventable. Methods: We examined all CLABSI cases at 2 academic medical centers over a 2-year period (2019–2021). We established 3 categories of CLABSIs: (1) preventable CLABSI (pCLABSI); (2) end-of-life CLABSI (EOL-CLABSI), which were CLABSIs that were caused by underlying disease processes in patients who were nearing the end of their lives due to a debilitating comorbidity; and (3) definition-based (dCLABSI), which met NHSN criteria for a CLABSI but, based on the pathogen and the clinical situation, likely occurred as a consequence of a patient’s comorbidities. Two experienced infectious diseases physicians (D.U. and A.S.M.) reviewed the charts of each patient with a CLABSI and, based on expert opinion, determined the category for each CLABSI. Results: Over the 2-year period, 147 CLABSIs were identified among the 2 hospitals, 66 (44.9%) of which occurred in an ICU. Most CLABSIs were pCLABSIs, making up 99 CLABSIs (67.3%). In comparison, 20 cases were categorized EOL-CLABSIs (13.6%), although 26 cases were dCLABSIs (17.7%), and 2 cases could not be classified. There was no difference in the distribution of CLABSI types in an ICU versus a non-ICU setting (χ2P = .265). However, we detected microbiologic differences between pCLABSIs, EOL-CLABSIs, and dCLABSIs (χ2P < .001), with gram-positive cocci making up the large majority of pCLABSIs (62.6%), followed by Candida spp (24.2%). Gram-negative bacilli (GNR) made up 11.1% of pCLABSIs. In comparison, GNRs were more prevalent in EOL-CLABSIs and dCLABSIs, making up 30.0% and 38.5% of each CLABSI type, respectively. Conclusions: Two-thirds of CLABSIs were deemed preventable. Central lines are important for managing critically ill patients, many of whom have inherent risk factors for bloodstream infections. EOL-CLABSIs highlight the potential for early care discussions to avoid CLABSIs at the end of a patient’s life and to avoid unnecessary blood cultures for patients on comfort care. Additionally, the pCLABSI distinction allows hospital epidemiology teams to focus on the CLABSI cases that can realistically be prevented with appropriate central-line care, techniques, and hand hygiene. En la presente ponencia se exponen los resultados de un proceso invesigativo desarrollado en la Facultad de Rehabilitación y Desarrollo Humano de la Universidad del Rosario, que tuvo como objetivo hacer una caracterización de los dispositivos de tecnología de asistencia para actividades de la vida diaria disponibles en el mercado de la ciudad de Bogotá, D.C. Como resultado del proceso se encontró que tan solo el 17% de las ayudas técnicas producidas en Bogotá, D.G. se encuentran dirigidos a las actividades de la vida diaria, este porcentaje corresponde a 24 productos sobre un n de 142, lo que permite concluir que es escasa a oferta de estos productos en la ciudad de Bogotá, D.C.

Abstract ‘Snowgoose’ is a freely flowering, winter-hardy mock orange (Philadelphus × virginalis Rehd.) with very fragrant, double, pure white flowers. It was selected by D.R. Sampson, of the Plant Research Centre, from the cross ‘Frosty Morn’ × ‘Bouquet Blanc’ made by D.F. Cameron in 1959 (4). In the Ottawa trials ‘Snowgoose’ was one of the hardiest cultivars, comparable to ‘Galahad’ and ‘Silberregen’ but more productive.

The paper presents an improved algorithm based on Bhaskara Rao and Ramesh Babu’s algorithm to invert magnetic anomalies of three-dimensional basement structures. The magnetic basement is approximated by an ensemble of juxtaposed vertical prisms whose bottom surface coincides with Curie surface with the known depth. The computer program operating with the proposed algorithm is built in Matlab environment. Test applications show that the proposed method can perform computations with fast and stable convergence rate where the results also coincide well with the actual model structure. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by inverting magnetic anomalies of the southeast part of Vietnam continental shelf. The calculated magnetic basement relief of the study area provides useful additional information for studies in the aim of dealing with the geological structure of the area.References Beiki M., 2010. Evaluation of biochemical characteristics of 8 perennial Allium species is achieved (A. ramosum, A. caeruleum, A. erubescens, A. obliquum, A. moly, A. aflatunense, A. oreophilum and A.ursinum). High nutritional significance of separate decorative species is demonstrated. A. caeruleum is shown to be a leader in the accumulation of ascorbic acid (more than 9000 mg/100 g d.w.) and polyphenols (more than 8000 mg GAE/kg d.v.). Adequate consumption level of vitamin C may be provides by 6.2 g of A.caerulum leaves. Antioxidant activity of Allium species alcoholic extracts composed a range from 1.5 (A. obliquum) to 6.4 (A. ursinum) mg GAE/g d.w. A. ramosum and A. oreophilum demonstrated the highest content of total soluble solids. The highest content of photosynthetic pigments happened to be typical for A. ursinum. The ratio between antioxidant activity of alcoholic and water extracts of Allium leaves was in the range between 0.89 and 2.21 depending on plant species: the highest value was registered in leaves of A. ursinum, the lowest – in leaves of A. ramosum. In a whole the highest content of antioxidants was demonstrated for leaves of A. caerulum. The highest levels of photosynthetic pigments and antioxidant activity of alcoholic extracts were indicated in leaves of A. ursinum.

A Modified Bayesian Method (MBM) for estimating directional wave spectra from Doppler spectra obtained by HF radar is examined using field data which were employed in the verification of Bayesian Method (BM). Applicability, validity and accuracy of the MBM are demonstrated compared with the directional wave spectra estimated by BM and observed by buoy acquired from the reliable field data obtained from Surface Current and Wave Variability Experiments (SCAWVEX) project. The necessary conditions of the Doppler spectral components to be used to estimate a reliable directional spectrum are correspondingly estimated by BM. The results clearly demonstrate that directional wave spectra can be estimated by MBM on the basis of Doppler spectra. In addition, though BM shows very time consuming in computations, BM is more robust against the presence of noise than MBM.   References  Akaike, H. (1980). Two papers published recently in this journal have examined the relationship between patterns of activity and patterns of body temperature in free-ranging beavers in winter (D.W. Smith, R.O. Peterson, T.D. Drummer, and D.S. Sheputis, 1991. Can. J. Zool. 69: 2178–2182; and A. P. Dyck and R.A. MacArthur, 1992. Can. J. Zool. 70: 1668–1672). I argue that both papers missed their objective, owing to the use of procedures that were inadequate to detect and (or) characterize behavioral or physiological rhythms that were free-running with periods ≠ 24 h.

A new interspecific Isoetes hybrid, I. echinospora Dur. ×I. maritima Underw., is described from Vancouver Island, British Columbia and southern Alaska by means of cytology and the scanning electron microscopy of spores. Isoetes ×pseudotruncata D.M. Britton and D.F. Brunton, hyb.nov. is the name proposed for this taxon. It is triploid and produces only aborted, sterile spores and has spore ornamentation features intermediate between those of its putative parents. Several concentrations of hybrids have been identified, each growing with both parents in shallow, freshwater habitat along the Pacific Coast of northwestern North America. Background:Type I interferon (IFN-I) activation is a prominent feature of several Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMDs) including primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Ultrasensitive single-molecule array (SiMoA) technology has facilitated the measurement of subfemtomolar concentrations of IFNs [1-3].Objectives:Here, we tested the performance of a commercially available SiMoA kit for detection of IFNα in serum from pSS, SLE, and SSc and correlated serum IFNα to whole blood IFN-stimulated gene (ISG) expression.Methods:Serum IFNα2 was measured in healthy controls (HC; n=68) and patients with pSS (n=85, n=110), SLE (n=24) and SSc (n=23) using a ready-to-use IFNα SiMoA kit on a HD-X Analyzer. IFN-I activation was additionally determined from paired samples of whole blood IFN-stimulated gene (ISG) expression of IFI44, IFI44L, IFIT1, IFIT3, and MxA by RT-PCR or MxA-ELISA.Results:Serum IFNα2 levels were elevated in pSS (median = 61.3 fg/mL) compared to HC (median < 5fg/mL) and SSc (median = 11.6 fg/mL), lower compared to SLE (median = 313.5 fg/mL), and positively correlated to whole blood ISG expression (rs=0.71-0.76, p<0.001). Comparable to MxA-ELISA (AUC=0.93), IFNα2 SiMoA identified pSS with high ISG expression (AUC=0.90) with 80-93% specificity and 71-84% sensitivity. Blinded validation in an independent pSS cohort yielded a comparable accuracy of 89%. Multiple linear regression indicated independent associations of autoantibodies, IgG, and use of hydroxychloroquine with serum IFNα2 concentrations in pSS. Confirming the literature [4], serum IFNα2 levels were lower in SLE patients in remission (DORIS classification) compared to patients not in remission.Conclusion:Thus, SiMoA serum IFNα2 reflects blood ISG expression in pSS, SLE and SSc.
