We propose an efficient algorithm for the global parameterization of triangulated surfaces. First, cone singularities are automatically detected in visually significant locations ; this process is computationally efficient and aims at detecting such cones at vertices of the mesh where high values of area distortion can be predicted prior to the actual parameterization. In order to ensure continuity across conic cuts resulted after cutting the mesh open through the detected cones, affine transition functions are employed ; these will be integrated into a linear system which aims at minimizing angular distortion. In this thesis we also present a new Cross-Parameterization algorithm which, given two input triangular meshes and sparse user landmark correspondences, computes topologically and geometrically consistent parameterizations. The simultaneous consistent parameterization of the meshes is achieved in a matter of only a few seconds, solving at most four linear systems in a least squares sense. We validate the results of the proposed algorithms by providing extensive experimental results, demonstrating the time efficiency, as well as the quality - illustrated by examining accepted distortion measures. The computational efficiency of the presented algorithms allows their usage in interactive applications, where the user can modify or add cone singularities (or landmark correspondences for the cross-parameterization pipeline) and still obtain results in practical running times

Resumen
Through distributed stream network routing, it has quantitatively been shown that the relationship between flow travel time and discharge varies strongly nonlinearly with stream stage and with catchment-specific properties. Physically derived distributions of water travel times through a stream network were successfully used to parameterise the streamflow response function of a compartmental hydrological model. Predictions were found to improve compared to conventional statistically based parameterisation schemes, for most of the modelled scenarios, particularly for peakflow conditions. A Fourier spectral analysis of 55-110 years of daily discharge time series from 79 unregulated catchments in Sweden revealed that the discharge power spectral slope has gradually increased over time, with significant increases for 58 catchments. The results indicated that the catchment scaling function power spectrum had steepened in most of the catchments for which historical precipitation series were available. These results suggest that (local) land-use changes within the catchments may affect the discharge power spectra more significantly than changes in precipitation (climate change). A case study from an agriculturally intense catchment using historical (from the 1880s) and modern stream network maps revealed that the average stream network flow distance as well as average water levels were substantially diminished over the past century, while average bottom slopes increased. The study verifies the hypothesis that anthropogenic changes (determined through scenario modelling using a 1D distributed routing model) of stream network properties can have a substantial influence on the travel times through the stream networks and thus on the discharge hydrographs. The findings stress the need for a more hydrodynamically based approach to adequately describe the variation of streamflow response, especially for predictions of higher discharges. An increased physical basis of response functions can be beneficial in improving discharge predictions during conditions in which conventional parameterisation based on historical flow patterns may not be possible - for example, for extreme peak flows and during periods of nonstationary conditions, such as during periods of climate and/or land use change.

We propose a novel skeleton-driven framework for cross-parameterization between two 3D polygonal models. Given two models, we first extract their curve skeletons, retrieve the skeleton-to-surface mapping information, and derive a skeleton-to-skeleton mapping. We then segment both meshes into several consistent parts and for each part pair we embed the parts in correspondence onto a planer domain. After the process of embedding, we apply an iterative relaxation scheme on each parameterized part that takes the skeleton-to-surface and skeleton-to-skeleton mapping information into account. A smoothing process is invoked at the end so as to smooth the cross-parameterization along the part boundaries. Briefly speaking, we use the dense skeleton-to-surface mapping information as the soft constraints during the cross-parameterization construction. As a result, our method can match the object features automatically without the general feature constraint points as common approaches. The method requires only a few user inputs that specify matching points on the part boundaries. We also show that our method can generate partial mapping results for the models that have unique object features.

In recent years, dense point models scanned from high-precision digital scanner devices have received a growing amount of attention. The point models captured from real-world objects have been extensively studied in many research areas such as computer graphics, scientific visualization, topography, digital archive, and reverse engineering. In this thesis, we propose a novel consistent parameterization and compatible re-sampling approach for 3D point models. The fundamental problem of consistent parameterization is how to consistently embed the input point models into a common parametric domain without any connectivity information. Given a base mesh with only a few vertices, we consistently decompose the input point models into several patches by finding a set of proper paths. We propose a novel approach to trace these paths based on direction fields. Once the consistent patches are obtained, we embed them onto a 2D triangle to obtain the correspondence. In the next process, an efficient approach is proposed to consistently re-sample the corresponding parameterizations. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is robust. Even the points clouds have large different in shape, the proposed approach can handle it well. In addition, we apply the proposed approach to the point morphing and several examples of aesthetically pleasing morphs are demonstrated.

Resumen
This chapter re-examines the hypothesis that some anaphors can be long-distance bound independently of their discursive conditions. All analyses of long-distance anaphora, whether they assume binding domain parameterization or covert movement, rely on the existence of a specific type of anaphors that can be bound out of the Condition A domain and are further characterized by monomorphemicity, subject orientation, sloppy readings, and blocking effects. The goal of this chapter is to question this empirical claim and examine the hypothesis that such purported long-distance anaphors can in fact be reduced to exempt anaphors subject to logophoric conditions. Some tests are proposed and applied to Icelandic sig, Mandarin ziji, French soi, and Norwegian seg/sin using online questionnaires. The results suggest that the hypothesis that long-distance binding should be eliminated from the theory and reduced to logophoric exemption is viable—pending further cross-linguistic studies.

Resumen
Abstract The conjecture that AdvPs are specifiers of distinct functional heads, entering with them a transparent semantic relation, raises a number of issues. One is the question of parameterization. How much variation should UG allow in the number and type of functional projections available to different languages? The strongest position would be that UG allows no variation at all. The evidence discussed above seems to suggest that this position may actually be tenable. Languages do not seem to differ as to whether they have aspectual projections higher or lower than mood projections, epistemic modality higher or lower than root modality, etc. The order appears cross-linguistically invariant. The limited cases of apparent variation (§6.4) all seem to involve agreement and negation in relation to other functional heads. But we have seen that precisely AgrPs (rather, DP-related projections) and NegPs are generable in many different positions among the adverb-related functional projections. It is thus tempting to interpret such variation as stemming from a pure “spell-out” option: whether a language lexicalizes a higher or lower Agr or Neg. A related question is whether we should take the entire array of functional projections to be present in every sentence.
