Resumen
A scalar quantum field theory method is used to calculate differential and total cross-sections for elastic and inelastic scattering in proton–proton collisions. When Mandelstam variables are used, the resulting formulas are simple and can be written in closed form. They display features very typical of elastic and inelastic scattering. The results show good agreement with total cross-section data for η meson production. Thus for this particular example, a simple scalar model can be used in place of a more complicated field theory with spin.

Resumen
The motion of a particle driven by a slow RF wave inside crossed electrostatic and magnetostatic fields is examined. A time-scale separation exists in the synchronous frame, moving at the slow-wave phase velocity, where all fields appear static in time and the cyclotron motion is much faster than the guidingcentre drift. The averaging of the periodic gyromotion is performed systematically with canonical transformations up to second order in the smallwave amplitude. The first-order guiding-centre drift follows the equipotential surfaces of the transformed electric field. The second-order effects, due to the field-line curvature, and/or the nonlinear variation in the wave phase velocity, cause departures from the parapotential flow. The topology of the trajectories depends on the departure of the drift velocity from synchronism with the wave. Various flow topologies corresponding to different values of the control parameters are examined.

In Saskatchewan, a field survey was conducted in 1996 and a grain elevator survey in 1997 to determine the nature and occurrence of herbicide-resistant (HR) biotypes of green foxtail (Setaria viridis). Based on results of the field survey, one in every 20 fields (1 million ha) in Saskatchewan is estimated to have acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor (Group 1)-HR green foxtail. Of the samples received from 30 grain elevators, 83% had Group 1 resistance. Similar to the field survey, incidence of aryloxyphenoxy propionate (AOPP) resistance was much higher than cyclohexanedione (CHD) resistance. Both surveys indicated relatively low incidence of dinitroaniline (Group 3) resistance or cross-resistance (Groups 1 and 3). Most alternative herbicides to control Group 1-HR green foxtail in broadleaf crops and cross-HR biotypes in cereal and broadleaf crops increase costs to the grower.

Resumen
The classical processes: the conversion of photons into gravitons in the static electromagnetic fields are considered by using Feynman perturbation techniques. The differential cross-sections are presented for the conversion in the electric field of the flat condenser and the magnetic field of the solenoid. A numerical evaluation shows that the cross-sections may have the observable value in the present technical scenario.

Resumen
Several prominent evolutionary theories contend that religion was critical to the emergence of large-scale societies and encourages cooperation in contemporary complex groups. These theories argue that religious systems provide a reliable mechanism for finding trustworthy anonymous individuals under conditions of risk. In support, studies find that people displaying cues of religious identity are more likely to be trusted by anonymous coreligionists. However, recent research has found that displays of religious commitment can increase trust across religious divides. These findings are puzzling from the perspective that religion emerges to regulate coalitions. To date, these issues have not been investigated outside of American undergraduate samples nor have studies considered how religious identities interact with other essential group-membership signals, such as ancestry, to affect intergroup trust. Here, we address these issues and compare religious identity, ancestry, and trust among and between Christians and Hindus living in Mauritius. Ninety-seven participants rated the trustworthiness of faces, and in a modified trust game distributed money among these faces, which varied according to religious and ethnic identity. In contrast to previous research, we find that markers of religious identity increase monetary investments only among in-group members and not across religious divides. Moreover, out-group religious markers on faces of in-group ancestry decrease reported trustworthiness. These findings run counter to recent studies collected in the United States and suggest that local socioecologies influence the relationships between religion and trust. We conclude with suggestions for future research and a discussion of the challenges of conducting field experiments with remote populations.
