Abstract Four recent monographs argue, in various ways, that the paradigm of critique is still a useful one for scholars to inhabit. Taken as a group, these authors broadly address the issues of how, and with what results, popular culture upholds hegemonic ideologies, and, by extension, whether the consumption of popular culture ought still to count as a guilty pleasure. Such questions are clearly related to the scholarly practice of studying popular culture by critiquing its ideological axioms. While these books all engage the problems with critique that have given rise to a contemporary postcritique movement, all ultimately conclude that key elements of critique remain useful as keystones of the study of literature and culture.

Resumen
Abstract Vaporwave, first emerging in the early 2010s, is a genre of music characterised by extensive sampling of earlier “elevator music,” such as smooth jazz, MoR, easy listening, and muzak. Audio and visual markers of the 1980s and 1990s, white-collar workspaces, media technology, and advertising are prominent features of the aesthetic. The (academic, vernacular, and press) writing about vaporwave commonly positions the genre as an ironic or ambivalent critique of contemporary capitalism, exploring the implications of vaporwave for understandings of temporality, memory and technology. The interpretive and discursive labour of producing, discussing and contesting this positioning, described here as “genre work,” serves to constitute and sediment the intelligibility and coherence of the genre. This paper explores how the narrative of vaporwave as an aesthetic critique of late capitalism has been developed, articulated, and disputed through this genre work. We attend specifically to the limits around how this narrative functions as a pedagogical or sensitising device, instructing readers and listeners in how to understand and discuss musical affect, the nature and function of descriptions of music, and perhaps most importantly, the nature of critique, and of capitalism as something meriting such critique.

Resumen
Prompted by the ever‐increasing cesarean rate, this paper considers the interpretive disjunct between two significant strands of feminist analysis that have arisen in the last four decades as a consequence of the phenomenon of medicalized birth. In contrast to the dominant paradigm of bioethical “Principalism,” both modes of analysis, understood as “the critique of industrialized labor” and “the critique of idealized labor,” are attentive to the way in which social discourses inform bioethical deliberation and practice, but significantly diverge in the nature of their accounts. The “industrialization critique” understands the culture of medical intervention to be impelled by an “obstetric desire” to appropriate women's reproductive potency, whereas the “idealization critique” relates new mothers’ “low childbirth satisfaction” to a pernicious normative ideal propagated by the natural childbirth movement. This paper will explore the anatomy of both critiques and interrogate their fidelity to the phenomenological insight of the body as chiasm between material and ideal. I will argue that while the insights of the idealization critique are well grounded, we must exercise caution about the critique's tendency to reductively understand the embodied experience of labor as entirely discursively produced, a gesture that risks re‐performing the dematerialization of women often effected through obstetric intervention itself.

Ansell, James D'Olier. "The trouble with culture : Plato's critique of poetry". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004460.

Texto completo
Resumen
In this thesis I argue that Plato's critique of poetry, taken in its proper context, is a serious and relevant critique of popular culture. In the first chapter I argue that the poetic reforms proposed in Books 2 and 3 and Book 10 of Republic stand at the front of a total reform of Greek culture. I argue for the consistency of Plato's whole argument and then I claim that if we get Plato's targets right, not fine art or literature, and focus on appropriate modern analogues then we can see why his critique is still important. If we share his claim that we are influenced by popular culture in important and often insidious ways and agree that culture can promote corrupt values, then we have accepted the core of Plato's challenge. If we find his solution distasteful, then the task is to come up with a democratic alternative. In the remaining two chapters I focus specifically on the challenge to the poets, putting the other reforms to the side. In the second chapter I consider a possible reply to the challenge focusing on the worth of the poetry that was expelled. I first look elsewhere in the Platonic oeuvre at the account of beauty in Symposium and Phaedrus but I argue that neither of them gives anything like aesthetic value that could be usefully applied to poetry. Next I look to some modern accounts of aesthetic value. I argue that while they might go some of the distance against Plato's challenge, they face a difficult task because it is not sufficient positing the value, an account is needed of their positive benefit. In the third chapter I turn to a more direct response to the challenge. Arguably Aristotle offers such a response in the Poetics, in terms of the notion of katharsis. I consider two interpretative candidates for katharsis. The first takes the benefit of poetry to be psychological - katharsis is a purgation of otherwise pathological emotions. I argue that this fails because it misunderstands precisely what Plato's concerns about poetry are, and, furthermore, this account could even be compatible with Plato's worries. The second interpretation takes the benefit of poetry to be ethical- katharsis is a type of ethical clarification which is beneficial in training our emotional responses. I claim that the clarification, and education, is worryingly conventionalist, and doesn't take seriously that Plato's target was popular culture and not great, educative literature.

Hill, Mark. "Neil Gaiman's American Gods: An Outsider's Critique of American Culture". ScholarWorks@UNO, 2005. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/282.

Texto completo
Resumen
In 2001, Neil Gaiman published American Gods, a novel of American life and mythology. As a British author living in the United States, Gaiman has a powerful vantage point from which to critique American culture, landscape, and ideology. Rich with re-invented deities, legends, mythic creatures, and folk heroes cast in a decidedly American mold, American Gods examines the American character, evaluating the myths and beliefs of the culture from the vantage point of an outsider. By examining the character's allegiance to particular cultural legacies (Wednesday as the American con artist, Shadow as the cowboy), I intend to assess this outsider's understanding of what it means to be an American.

Julian's culture is a product of a school-system as well as of intellectual and ideological trends. The prince ran along the whole succession of school cycles. His work settles a scale of literary values in accordance with the school-pattern, but also lays down an ideologically-founded dichotomy between good and bad books. In fact, Julian's work is extensively built upon texts ignored by the claimed scale or condemned on ideological grounds. The major texts often come down to it by indirect ways as short excerpts. Besides, it displays an amount of learning on different matters. Some of these (rhetoric, philosophy) precisely reflect the school curriculum, while others (history, geography, astronomy) are marked with preoccupations which are typical of the age. Furthermore, Julian's work reveals, concerning culture or culture-linked matters, such opinions and feelings as to express, behind praised values, a real devaluation of the ancient literary heritage, of the functions of culture, of learning, even of hellenism

In the work of charles baudelaire, classical culture (as it manifests itself in french literature between 1549 and 1715) plays a very important part. The component elements of this culture are thought again, taken up and often recast by the poet; in baudelaire's view, modernity is inseparable from tradition. Baudelaire reaches the limits of the classical culture but remains below the breaking point where modernity comes in

Zahorski, Alexandra. "Willa Cather : mouvement et culture". Bordeaux 3, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004BOR30068.

Eleven out of the twelve novels that Willa Cather wrote, that is all but the last one, depict the movement in search of culture, self-fulfillment and a place away from the small town life of the Midwest. In spite of the beauty of the landscape the only solution is escape to the big cities of the eastern seaboard and often further east to Europe. The characters' attraction to the east is bound up with the author's love of France. The numerous references to this country throughout the canon (the 'Frenchness') attest to the belief in the supremacy of French culture which comes to its head in Death Comes for the Archbishop and Shadows on the Rock. The journey of quest is often undertaken by characters whose childhood has been influenced by the presence of European immigrants. The basis of the movement from west to east, occasionally with a return to the west, is the transcription of Cather's own experience as an immigrant in Nebraska. This original displacement and the new surroundings marked her life and her writing. The desire for something else, and the longing and restlessness the protagonists experience create the current of nostalgia tangible throughout all the novels. Even when they succeed professionally they cannot help wondering if their movement has been worth the sacrifice. While expounding the need for the possibility to give vent to one's creative nature, in the end Cather questions whether departure is a prerequisite to one's fulfillment. In Lucy Gayheart she suggests the answer

Martire, Giulio. "Le Moniage Guillaume long. Édition critique. Modèles narratifs, modèles de culture". Thesis, Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UPSLP018.

Texto completo
This work aims at presenting a muliperspectival view on Le Moniage Guillaume long, chanson de geste composed in the last quarter of XIIth century and transmitted by seven manuscripts. My work is divided in three main sections: 1) Philological study; 2) Critical edition, annex and glossary; 3) Study of the narrative models and of the cultural models, which emerges in the two main branches of the poem (Moniage ‘proprement dit’ and branche d’Ysoré). The first section is divided in three chapters: In the first chapter, some of the issues related to the connection between Moniage Guillaume long (MGl) and Moniage Guillaume bref (MGb) are studied. The study proceeds with a description of the manuscripts through which the MGl is transimitted, then with a presentation of the recensio, followed by the proposal of a new stemma codicum, rather different from the one provided by the first editor of the chanson (W. Cloetta, 1906-1911). A study of the versification of the poem concludes this chapter. In the second chapter, the critical edition is introduced. I start from the critical discussion of the two previous editions of the MGl (Cloetta 1906-1911, Andrieux-Reix 2004), both methodologically outdated. The principles of my new edition are therefore outlined: I propose a reconstruction of the ‘subarchetype/adaptation’ A. Subsequently, the transcription criteria are exposed as well as the critical apparatus. This apparatus is highly innovative: it is organized in three sections. In the first of them, the corrective interventions on A4 (my manuscript de référence) are pointed out. The second section is divided in a left and a right field: the first one contains the varia lectio of the whole tradition; the second one shows the ‘macro-variants’ (verses belonging to the others subarchetypes, omissions of A and of the others subarchetypes, inversions etc.). Further, the right field is linked to the critical text with a réclames system; in this way the reader will be more easily oriented, in a sort of ‘triangulation’ between text, right field and left field of the apparatus. The exposition of the ratio of the reconstructive interventions concludes the chapter. The third chapter consists in a study of the ms. A4 and it is composed of a codicological paragraph, a study of the enluminures, and a linguistic study. The second section of my work consists in the critical edition of MGl , followed by an annex and a little glossary. The third section consists in the study of the narrative models of the poem’s first and last branches (the two undoubtedly ‘originals’). The analysis relies on a morphological basis: the adhesion of the récits to the meta-plot enucleated by V. Propp in his Morphology of the fairy-tale is certified. I used the Propp’s scheme as a guide for my narrative analysis: whenever I found out a narrative function, I substantiated the study with anthropological dossiers, pointing out the interlink between the historical and historico-literary dimension. Among Propp’s works, my ideal reference of The Historical Roots of the Wonder Tale. In the concluding part, the interweaving of ‘carnival models’ and ‘ritual models’ emerging in the first branche is studied, along with ‘familiarizing’ (Bachtin) indicators in the first and in the last branche. In particular, the main focus is the double-edged role of the representation of food: ‘familiarizing’ element and objectual relais of ideological struggle at the same time. In this regard, certain episodes have been privileged: the analysis of the conventual bagarre, which concludes the first branche, will set the pace of the research. The study is then extended to the meeting between Guillaume and the robbers and to the first experiences of the hero within the abbey (laisses VII-XVII); some class dialectics proper to the Central Middle-Ages (relationship between great aristocracy, monks and sergents) are underlined in this part

Blüm, B. "'Ach, was sind das Finst're Zeiten!' : Eckhard Henscheid's critique of modern culture". Thesis, Swansea University, 2005. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.636113.

Resumen
This thesis examines Eckhard Henscheid’s critique of modern culture. Henscheid’s criticism extends to many different aspects of contemporary cultural life, from the celebrity-centred world of music to the market-driven world of publishing, from the manipulative idiom of political persuasion to the mind-numbing banality of advertising, and from the narrow self-satisfied domain of academia to the mass entertainment that is modern football. Henscheid’s attack on the degeneracy of modern language relates to all of these spheres, but also represents a theme in its own right. This thesis shows that Henscheid diagnoses the corruption of culture everywhere and that in his view all these different corruptions overlap and interlock. What is striking about Henscheid’s critique is that he does not adhere to any clear-cut party-political or ideological viewpoint, although it is possible to identify Henscheid’s critical indebtedness to Theodor W. Adorno and the Frankfurt School and to Karl Kraus. Henscheid’s ‘Kulturkritik’ extends to every aspect of modern life: this is not the selective criticism of isolated faults (although he tends to illustrate certain failings through the example of specific individuals) but rather the passionate expression of an all-encompassing ‘Kulturpessimismus’. The thesis examines the motives behind this wide-ranging denunciation of modern culture and identifies Henscheid’s ideal models of culture, which are drawn mainly from the classical ‘Bildungskanon’. The thesis discovers conservative traits in some of Henscheid’s positions but also poses the question whether labelling Henscheid a conservative is adequate: does he offer a constructive and reasonable criticism based on the wish to conserve or revive certain traditional values or is he just a peddler of nostalgia whose cantankerous outbursts have no chance of positively influencing modern society? The thesis will argue that Henscheid’s criticism succeeds in making an important contribution to contemporary cultural debates and consequently deserves to be taken with the utmost seriousness.

Zarabadi, Ladan. "Appropriation of Space – Perpetuation of Patriarchy: A Feminist Critique on Public Space Design in Iran". En 108th Annual Meeting Proceedings. ACSA Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.35483/acsa.am.108.149.

Resumen
This research uses a feminist lens to examine Iranian urban public parks designed for use by women only. The purpose of this paper is to reveal translations of patriarchal cultural values from an architectural micro scale to an urban macro scale and question the (over) contextualization of these parks’ design. Although this is a multifaceted topic that also merits ethnographic analysis, this particular paper primarily examines the physicality of the space. I draw on Henri Lefebvre’s theory of production of space, Stephen Graham’s urban militarization, and Jürgen Habermas’s and Nancy Fraser’s views of public spheres to theorize women-only parks’ existence as a hegemonic production of space. I argue that despite the Iranian government’s claim that the purpose of these women- only parks is to provide women a safe and free public space, this type of urban public space actually appropriates the design logic of courtyard houses, materializes patriarchal culture, and perpetuates patriarchal values in an urban configuration. In other words, women-only parks in Iranian cities are an embodiment of patriarchal culture in which gender segregation is used as a strategy to fulfill Islamic values and disguise patriarchal dispositions into a false sense of spatial and gender justice. This qualitative and interdisciplinary research uses a mixed method approach (alternating between formal and discursive analyses as needed) and multiple sources of data. Data collected on-site from women-only parks in Tehran (including photos and videos) serves as the primary source for this analysis. I also use reports from online news agencies and social media, as well as previously published interviews conducted by sociology scholars.

This study highlights the importance of criticism in the practice and education of interior design. Unlike other disciplines related to the visual arts, the fact that the discipline of interior architecture has not developed a separate and distinct intellectual whole with its own rules has affected the place of criticism in both the profession and education. Therefore, in order to be a step towards the elimination of these deficiencies, different approaches that could be a source for the development of interior architecture criticism have been studied. These approaches have been re-evaluated, taking into account the requirements of interior design itself, and an exemplary model of interior architecture criticism has been created. Criticism in interior architecture education, which is another important issue addressed by the study, has an important potential to train qualified designers who examine the basic dynamics of the profession and have a critical perspective. Therefore, the existence of a critique course, which can analyze design studies in a contextual framework, is not seen as a common educational necessity. In this context, a proposal for a critique course consisting of 4 modules has been prepared for the 4th year of undergraduate interior architecture education, using this model critique. Due to the course proposal developed, it is expected that the students will have a better command of the design process as a result of examining the meaning and requirements of interior spaces with different methods. Through the applications made in the course, it is intended to provide students with the ability to consider space from all aspects. As a result, it aims to contribute to the formation and development of the critical culture necessary to define the boundaries of the discipline, the development of the profession and the field of application.

Moore, Aimée, Erin Reilly-Sanders, Johnna S. Keller y BESS WILLIAMSON. "Towards an Accessible Crit: Disability and Diversity in Architectural Reviews". En 2022 AIA/ACSA Intersections Research Conference. ACSA Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35483/acsa.aia.inter.22.2.

Resumen
The United Nations and many of the world’s governments define accessibility in the built environment as a human right, and U.S. architectural degree accreditation requires that accessible design be included in architectural degree curricula. However, architecture programs themselves have rarely been examined for their (in)accessibility. Looking at the architectural critique, or the crit, we note barriers for people with physical, sensory, mental, and cognitive disabilities including uncomfortable seating, long sessions with few breaks, and high-pressure extemporaneous speaking. These practices often go unquestioned, but the inaccessibility of crits is part of an overall culture of discouragement and discrimination for anyone who does not fit traditional expectations, and particularly people with disabilities. An accessible crit consciously addresses the range of abilities and needs that may be present among both students and critics. Here we highlight four different perspectives on accessibility: historical representation of disabled people in architecture training, diversity and equity-focused practices in critiques, applying constructivist pedagogy to architectural critiques, and accessibility as critical to sustainability and resilience. Each perspective offers opportunities for transforming the traditional crit to better meet the needs of participants while furthering architectural education.Disability is rarely included in professional discussions of diversity; for example, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) keeps statistics on members’ race, ethnicity, and gender, but not disability. Meanwhile, statistics on college and graduate students show a significant portion who experience disability, including physical and sensory disabilities along with the “invisible” disabilities of mental illness, neurodiversity, and chronic illness. Since 2020 the physical and mental stresses of higher education have been even more apparent, as well as related stresses of both in-person and remote learning during a pandemic. Rather than returning to “normal” operations that present barriers, we propose taking this moment to re-examine one of the most fundamental practices in architectural education, and using it to leverage a more equitable and productive learning environment.

Resumen
Architecture as a field of study relies on dialogue. As the design studio centers around modes of constructive critique through desk-crits, pin-ups, and reviews, a culture of discussion stands at the core of Architectural study. The format of dialogue has undergone a process of evolution in Architectural education. Rooting its genealogy after the Ecole de Beaux Arts’ academic structure, early design studio reviews in the US typically comprised of a closed jury system; students were left behind closed doors until the jury completed assessment of the students’ work. Since the Great Wars, the private nature of the closed jury has slowly permeated to take the familiar format of the design review today, which involves a student presentation with an ensuing critique by the jury. With a number of initiatives and programs that advocated for changes in the Architectural scene in the late 20th century - such as Cedric Price’s “Taskforce” at the AA that re-imagined a student’s capacity to drive thesis questions, Price’s Thinkbelt which captured architecture’s social responsibility in the 1960s, as well as Gordon Matta Clark’s experimental dinners at FOOD restaurant in SoHo, New York in the 1970s that demonstrated his concept of “Anarchitecture” – intellectual dialogue began to extend beyond formalized groups and traditional spaces of conversation. Paired with shifts in higher education, notably by Paulo Freire and Henry Giroux who developed the philosophy of Critical Pedagogy since the 1980s, Architectural pedagogy gradually shifted to foster a sense of organized social responsibility with agency towards civic change.

Resumen
Refraining from reasoning in support of the universal taste and the experience of the beautiful, cultural sociology treats taste as socially contingent and constructed. The objective of this paper is to outline a social critique of different judgements of taste when it comes to different types of literary production based on the theoretical framework established by Pierre Bourdieu and on the example of the reception of popular literature, mainly historical romances written by Marija Jurić Zagorka. The methodological approach thereby applied includes the deconstruction of common distinctions based on Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, field and doxa, genealogy of highbrow taste in the era of so called highly textual modernism, critical analysis of gender discourse underlying cultural evaluations of literary production by women and for women, and the practicing of the ethnographic shift towards the reader in her context. This empirically contextualized analysis of literary tastes expressed by various recipients in Croatian cultural history has led to the results that reveal a long persistence of popularity and adoration of Zagorka’s novels on the one hand and harsh, almost visceral, disgust with her production by official discourse on the other, confirming the thesis that judgments of taste are based on society (and class). However, these results do not suggest a linear (let alone causal) relationship between the class system and the system of cultural classifications as well as between consumerist desire and taste. Historical novels by Marija Jurić Zagorka, mainly written in the first half of the 20th century, contain a foundationally strong inscription of opposed social strata, thus providing a useful and relevant empirical basis for the analysis of complex processes of cultural modernization and accompanying changing forms of social power.

Resumen
Foundational education system commonly referred to as K-12 school education is fundamental for people to succeed in life as noted in United Nations declaration of human rights. Consequently, decades of investments have helped K-12 sector evolve and respond to new demands but many of the traditional thinking has remained and thus hinder agility and disruptive evolution of the system. In most countries the national school education systems are perhaps the largest single enterprise and subjected to socio-cultural, economic and political influences, which in turn make it reluctant and/or difficult to change the system. However, as the world transitions from industrial revolution to information revolution and now to knowledge economy, the foundational education sector has been confronted with several simultaneous challenges. The monograph reviews and analyses how these challenges may be supported in a system that is reliant on traditional rigid time frames and confronted by complex external pressures that are blurring the boundaries of the school education landscape. It is apparent that doing more of the same may not provide the necessary solutions. There is a need to explore new opportunities for reforming the school education space, including system structures, human resources, curriculum designs, and delivery strategies. This analytical work critiques current practices to encourage K-12 educators recognize the need to evolve and embrace disruptions in a culture that tends to be wary of change. The key considerations identified through this analytical work is presented as a set of recommendations captured under four broad areas commonly used in school improvement literature

Resumen
The paper traces the development from the medieval, traditional union, through the modern disunion, toward a possible post-modern reunion of the sacred and the profane. It concentrates on the modern disunion and conflict between the religious and the secular, revelation and enlightenment, faith and autonomous reason in the Western world and beyond. It deals specifically with Christianity and the modern age, particularly liberalism, socialism and fascism of the 2Oth and the 21st centuries. The problematic inclination of Western Catholicism toward fascism, motivated by the fear of and hate against socialism and communism in the 20th century, and toward exclusive, authoritarian, and totalitarian populism and identitarianism in the 21st. century, is analyzed, compared and critiqued. Solutions to the problem are suggested on the basis of the Critical Theory of Religion and Society, derived from the Critical Theory of Society of the Frankfurt School. The critical theory and praxis should help to reconcile the culture wars which are continually produced by the modern antagonism between the religious and the secular, and to prepare the way toward post-modern, alternative Future III - the freedom of All on the basis of the collective appropriation of collective surplus value. Distribution and recognition problems are equally taken seriously.
