Le, Grandic Eric. "Les crimes de l'amour de sade : tradition litteraire et travail d'ecriture". Paris 10, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA100140.
Texto completoThis thesis is meant to study a work often considered as minor in relation to the most famous, shocking novels by sade. Choosing les crimes de l'amour comes from the desire to fight against that apriorism, and to show that the collection of the tragic short stories published in 1800 remarkably highlights sade's imagination and his extraordinary art of writing, the originality of which is brought out behind the compromise with the moral and aesthetic conventions. First, i shall study the relationships between les crimes de l'amour and the convention of tragic short stories and that of literary critics defending the fictional art. Thus, "l'idee sur les romans", the preface to les crimes de l'amour, follows that literary tradition giving a definition and the historical background of a genre often questioned by the moral authorities. It also gives a new portrayal of the novelist. I shall also study the links with the world of the baroque short stories, with the legacy of historical short stories and i shall see how sade manages to transfigure the evildoer, an omnipresent character in his precursors' fiction. Second, basing myself on the comparison of the 1787-1788 manuscript with the 1800 edition, i shall cast light on the text's genesis and underline the unflagging effort to improve his style associated with the need to compromise with the reader : by working cleverly without ever renouncing his beliefs, sade beautifully enhances the virtue of suffering. Third, i shall show that this collection of short stories is firmly attached to the esoteric writing. I shall see how the narrative is handled, for instance the role of the embedded narrative, and i shall deal with women's destiny and the libertine character. Literary history, genetic criticism and thematic approach shall be dealt with to have a better understanding of sade
Mathieu, Elizabete. "Violences et grèves dans les plantations de São Paulo dans la période post-abolition (1888-1930)". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022SORUL050.
Texto completoThis doctoral thesis examines the strikes and the violence between the rural workers and the coffee plantation owners in São Paulo, Brazil, during the post-slavery period (1888-1930). Based on the social history and a wide range of historical sources, the aim being to demonstrate that these rural workers were not in fact passive and submissive historical subjects. On the contrary, although the creation of trade unions was forbidden by the plantation owners, the workers managed to create tactics of resistance as well as individual, familial and collective kinds of struggles. Women played a major role as workers and active participants, fighting against many kinds of exploitations to which they were submitted to in the plantations. It was a way for the workers to contest the strategies of exploitation and domination implemented by the plantation owners, through rigid and coercive control mechanisms and excessive disciplinary measures, in order to confine them into an idealised worker model. The violent repression of the strikes by both the plantation owners and the policy along with physical aggressions between workers and plantation owners, reveal that violence in rural labour relations in Brazil was quite common, demystifying the myth about the pacifism and submission of Brazilian rural workers
Puaud, David. "Anthropologie d'un procès : crime, marginalité et travail social". Paris, EHESS, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EHES0621.
Texto completoThis work analyses what is symbolicallly at stake during a Crown Court case in which a crime is explained by the psychosocial biography of a marginal person. This thesis is built on an «involved observation» survey conducted in a social specialised preventive action department. From March 16th to 25th 2010, in Tours (France), Jean Ouvrard and Julien Lidy were sued in the Crown Court. They appeared with five more people on the charge of Michel Firmin's murder with act of barbarism in 2007. During this lawsuit, I gave evidence of the educationnal support I provided for Jean Ouvrard as a street youth worker. The proposed hypothesis was to account for the murder emphasized by the «pathogenic personality traits» of the main defendant, Jean Ouvrard. Without any motive, some extracts from his psychosocial biography supported the analysis for the «reasons of murder». By this way, a murder case without historical aspects was «explained». As a first part of this work, I focus on the Crown Court ethnography. Secondly, from this case, I «unfold» in time and space some elements of the lawsuit oral debates, analysing some deviations in Jean Ouvrard's life. Examining the transformations of the popular district where Jean Ouvrard lived emphasizes that the breaking up of the local working class social fabric led to stigmatize the Chateauneuf inhabitants' identity. Families living in advanced marginality are subjected to many social supports and judicial proceedings. Following-up the 13 year sequence of «social care» for the Ouvrard family helps me to anthropologically understand some contextual facts which drove this young man to disaster. However, beyond the identity reifications, paying attention to the social and anthropological process enables to observe the individualization attempted by Jean Ouvrard while facing social and/or judicial systems. All these «detours» allow us to return, in the tird part of this thesis, to what is symbolically at stake in the system of the Jean Ouvrard case in the Crown Court. The analisys of the discursive framework displayed by the judicial parties inolved in the court highlights the layout of a «judicial social and medical continuum» aiming at giving account for Jean Ouvrard's «morbid abilities». Specific traits connected to the crime are linked particularly to a negative glimpse of a part of the French popular-district youth. These representations are relayed in the society by the media system. Therefore, this work hypothesis is to puzzle out the Crown Court case as an event in which some obvious character traits are revealed and magnified by describing the «human monster», Jean Ouvrard
Giuily, Constance. "De l'acte criminel au travail de subjectivation adolescent, la violence sexuelle à la recherche d'une interprétation : étude clinique et projective des enjeux du processus adolescent chez les auteurs de violence sexuelle adultes". Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCB228.
Texto completoThe aim of this study is to examine the psychic processes underlying the act of sexual violence within a population of adult offenders in light of the adolescent process of subjectivation, the work of historicization and the bisexual dispositions of identifications. Clinical data was collected from non-directive interviews and projective assessments of 8 male sexual offenders who had committed their first sexual offense later at adulthood, an uncommon criterion in this population. The sample was selected from a specialized institution for penal imposed treatments after incarceration. Along with the Rorschach, the TAT was administered with the exceptional inclusion of the 17BM and feminine cards in order to gain a better understanding of identification dynamics. The findings highlighted metapsychological basis for the interpretation of the function of sexual violence in the patient's life course, thus yielding important therapeutic implications. Essentially, this research emphasizes the importance of considering the adolescent process in adult psychotherapy. It also underlines the potentially therapeutic benefits yielded by this specific research method amongst the population of sexual offenders undergoing court-ordered treatments

Texto completoThe current state policy consists of getting schools and enterprises closer. Is this a dreach of the original republican educative project which was based on their separationy first we analyse the formation of the public school as the consequence of labour division between manual and intellectual work introduced with the wage-earning. This labour division itself is part of the formation of state. We define the educative work as self-education by the worker. Then, we analyse the various relationships between state and workers movement as different integrations of parts of the working class. We discuss the sociological and close to marxism theories of social reproduction. Then we analyse the current crisis as the crisis of the wage-earning, the failure of labour division. Finally, in the current period and through the new educative project of state, we see a tentative redefinition of labour division. The division between manual and intellectual work is now based on the tutorship of the actual workers. As a conclusion, we see the teaching enterprise as a new strategy of the capital to enforce the separation between work and education

Texto completoSince R. NELSON & S. WINTER (1982), the cognitive dimension of the firm has been emphasized by the evolutionists. Their loyalty to neo-Schumpeterian heritage has resulted in a strong affinity towards the problematic of the economy of the technology. Due to this kind of exchanges, and also impregnated with the institutionalism tradition in economy and the organisations theory, they were conduced to explore the inertia and the change at the same time. Their problematic was developed through various notions: the uncertain and cumulative character of the technical progress, the technological paradigms and trajectories, the irreversibility of choices, the phenomenon of lock-in at suboptimal trajectories, the routines and the learning process, and the national innovation systems, for instance. However, despite these theoretical advancements, the evolutionist theory will face difficulties in dealing with the enterprise’s political dimension and in inserting it in the innovation and learning process. This thesis has exactly the ambition of contributing to fulfil this gap. On the one hand, the thesis takes into account the ways of institutionalisation of the employment relationship and the modes of organisation of human resources’ management. On the other hand, it considers the modes of institutionalisation of innovation process and the modes of organizing the learning process in the enterprises. The experience of the Brazilian iron and steel industry help to discuss the limits and possibilities of the emergency of cooperative relations, considering the local specificities of the employment relations and the importance of incremental innovations in this industry

Texto completoThe studies presented in "Crisis and ideas on crisis in modern France (1871-1968)" do not deal with individual beliefs and works but with political ideas and their historical evolution; with trends of public opinion, intellectual currents and political myths, the concept of "crisis" being analyzed as a central notion. The origin of these studies goes back to "La Republique se meurt (1956-1958)" (1978). In this book, i analyzed the attitude of my generation towards the ultimate crisis of the French Fourth Republic. In 1956-1958, the notion of crisis was not related to economics any longer, but t9o politics only. Through various topics (Esprit, a French review, socialism in France, French intellectuals, anti-americanism, etc. ). I also described politics as an independent concept. As for la fievre hexagonale (1986), it is both a synthesis and a theoretical analysis about French political crises. According to me, the lasting instability of the French political system, wich goes back to the French Revolution, is due mainly to the evolution of a major religious conflict about the role of the roman Catholic Church within the French society

Texto completoThis thesis analyses informal employment in the DRC under the assumption of a segmentation. We start with a description of the underlying conditions explaining the emergence, and then spread of informal jobs, which is mainly driven by a structural crisis and the destruction of formal employment in the DRC. The thesis then proposes to reject the uniqueness of the informal sector within the DRC labor market and analyzes its heterogeneity, based on the analyzes of Lautier (2004), Maloney (2004), Fields (2005) and Bacchetta et al. (2009).The thesis therefore highlights the relevance of combining the theories of informality and of segmentation to analyse informal employment in DRC, and applies this framework to two mutually enriching datasets: the 1-2-3 survey, which is quantitative, and qualitative data that we collected in the field and focused on a specific activity: an emerging market for second-hand equipment coming from Europe and called "bilokos" in DRC.The results from these two types of data allow to characterize what we call “the informality of segmented jobs”, a concept that we empirically apply with two levels of analysis: the Characteristics of the informal Activity (C.A.)., and the Profiles of the informal Entrepreneurs (P.E.). Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods allow us to characterize a segmentation in Informal Production Units along four types ranging from lower income to higher income

Texto completoSince 2008, the developed countries have had to face a severe economic crisis which could have affected psychosocial working conditions and mental health. The aim of this thesis was to assess the changes in psychosocial work factors and in mental health in the working populations in Europe and in France in times of the 2008 economic crisis, and to study whether these changes were different according to various subgroups of population.Data from European periodical cross-sectional surveys in 30 European countries in 2005 and 2010 (73496 employees) and a national prospective French survey in 2006 and 2010 (5600 workers) were used.Psychosocial work factors displayed mixed changes among European employees between 2005 and 2010, with both deteriorations and improvements, and worsened in France between 2006 and 2010, especially among women. Workers in the countries highly hit by the crisis, younger workers, low-skilled workers and public sector workers were more likely to be affected by these negative changes. No change in mental disorders was found in the French working population. Nevertheless, behaviours and indicators of mental health (alcohol use, smoking, sleep problems and self-reported health) worsened between 2006 and 2010, in particular among younger workers and workers with permanent contract.Prevention policies could be useful to reduce the deterioration of psychosocial working conditions and mental health especially among some subgroups of population most affected by this deterioration

Texto completoThe logistic chains represent a competitive advantage that companies try to maintain. Nevertheless, it is never easy to anticipate the evolution of a logistics chain. Consequently, to integrate the disturbances as a parameter into the study of the chain can allow limiting its vulnerability. The research works presented in this thesis, within the context of cooperation with the logistics department of EADS, concern the definition of a modeling approach and an oriented agent simulation of logistic chains in a context with strong disturbances (the crisis management logistics chain). However, work in an uncertain environment; incite to be equipped with cooperation mechanisms assuring all the actors of the chain satisfaction, while acting in a collective way to reach a common objective: the crisis management. To resolve this kind of problem, we defined in this thesis two interaction modes and negotiation protocols based on the cooperation between agents. These protocols, validated in a crisis management application, allow us to take into account the dependencies between the different negotiation issues. To demonstrate, the efficiency of the used approaches, we represented the variation of the bullwhip effect according to the used approach. We concluded that the cooperation is essential and allows reducing efficiently the bullwhip effect along a logistics chain. A demonstrator OBAC was realized, integrating all this approaches and military applications

Research to date has demonstrated significant relationships between the presence of outdoor drug markets and violent crime. Scholars have neglected however, to consider the role of travel distance on the drugs/violence nexus. The current study examines whether features of the distributions of travel distance to markets of drug buyers, drug sellers, or the interaction between the two distributions predicts drug market violence levels net of surrounding community demographic structure. Reuter and MacCoun's (1992) as yet untested model about the connections between drugs and violent crime, predicts that the interaction of drug seller and buyer distance distributions from varying distances more powerfully drug market violence levels than buyer and average distance averages. This suggests that how the travel patterns of the two major participants in drug markets intersect is key to understanding differences. That model is tested here. In addition, for comparison purposes, impacts of buyer and seller travel median distances are modeled separately. This work uses 5 years (2006-2010) of incident and arrest data from the Philadelphia Police Department. Reuter and MacCoun's model will be tested using the following analytical techniques. First, a methodology for locating and bounding drug markets using a nearest neighbor, hierarchical clustering technique is introduced. Using this methodology 34 drug markets are identified. Second, hierarchical linear models examining buyers and sellers separately predict travel distances to drug markets. Arrestees are nested within markets. This technique separates influences on distance arising from arrestees from drug market distance differences. Third, how market level median travel distance affects within drug market violence is considered. Specifically, the main effects of median buyer travel distance and median seller travel distance on drug market violence are captured using separate Poisson hierarchical linear models. Finally, impacts of the interaction between buyer and seller distance, Reuter and MacCoun's (1992) focus, are explored in another series of generalized hierarchical linear models. The main findings from the dissertation are as follows: 1. Results provide partial support for Reuter and MacCoun's drug market-violence model using multiple operationalizations. Public markets--those in which buyers and sellers travel from outside their own neighborhoods--are expected to be the most violent. 2. Separate raw distance measures for buyers and sellers correlate with within-drug market violence, after controlling for community demographics. 3. A negative effect of socioeconomic status and violence holds even when modeled with drug market variables. 4. As the proportion of crack cocaine sales within drug markets increases so too does within-market violence. Conceptual implications highlight the need to investigate social ties as an intervening variable in the travel distance »» drug market violence relationship. It is not clear from this research whether the travel distances of drug offenders in some way explains the amount or strength of social ties in a drug market, which in turn serves to suppress or elevate within-drug market violence. Policy implications suggest that Reuter and MacCoun's drug market types may connect with specific policing responses. Policing efforts may not receive much support from community residents because dense social networks may discourage reporting illicit activity. Markets drawing dealers and customers from farther away, and located around commercial and recreational centers may be amenable to place-based policing initiatives and coordinated intervention strategies with multiple city agencies.

Judek, Clement. "The contribution of virtual crisis simulations to the study of crisis management situations : the case of iCrisis crisis simulation approach". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université de Lorraine, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LORR0350.
Texto completoThe emergence of major crises illustrates, on the one hand, the high intensity of these events, but also the increasing complexity and interdependence of systems, which are resulting in a larger number of affected organizations. Nowadays, many events are considered as crises, whereas they can only be emergencies. This use of the term «crisis» can be counterproductive because, due to its unique nature, the crisis requires special capabilities such as adaptation, unlike events in the field of emergency management that require the application of a procedure. To reduce the risk of major crises, prevention and protection are necessary. However, not all situations are predictable and for this reason, the organizations exposed must be prepared. To prepare and improve the experience of crisis managers, simulation appears to be a solution. Stress simulations raise awareness of crisis situations and allow organizations to gain experience by placing them in a virtual environment that tries to reproduce real conditions as much as possible. The objective of reproducing the situation as accurately as possible is necessary, but there is no verification/validation method to ensure that the simulation method is really effective. In addition, the majority of existing crisis simulators aim to achieve an educational objective for people involved in emergency or crisis situations. However, due to the complex nature of crisis situations, it is in the interest of conducting stress tests to investigate the crisis itself. In this context, we propose to question the ability of the iCrisis crisis simulation approach to place strategic managers in a situation with similar characteristics to those of a «real crisis». This interesting approach within the framework of the given pedagogical objectives also makes it possible to open up to objectives less known for crisis simulators: to achieve scientific objectives. Indeed, does such a system also make it possible to study certain aspects of the crisis? Through this manuscript, we will try to contribute to the reflection on these two aspects. To provide some answers to these questions, this manuscript proposes 5 chapters: - Chapter 1 aims to understand the positioning of the concept of crisis in relation to the concept of urgency. - Chapter 2 is devoted to the definition of the crisis that is used in research. - Chapter 3 discusses the research methodology with an emphasis on iCrisis simulation. - Chapter 4 presents the study that examined whether participants in iCrisis simulations experienced the characteristics of a real crisis. - Chapter 5 presents two studies that have been conducted. One concerns the assessment of mental workload and. The second is to test the use of a tool that evaluates cascading effects. The research made it possible to clarify the difference between emergency and crisis, and then to propose a definition of the crisis based on its characteristics. It also made it possible to implement the iCrisis crisis simulation approach, which is precisely described. The second important result is the presentation of the study the study which aimed to observe that the characteristics of the crisis are well observable during an iCrisis simulation. Finally, we demonstrate that studies on issues applied to the crisis can be conducted with iCrisis and yield results

Texto completoOur thesis studies the articulation between the Financial Instability Hypothesis (FIH) and the Money Manager Capitalism (MMC) description in Minsky's work in order to précise his contributions to the debate of the 1997 Asian financial crisis and 2007 North American financial crisis. Our work contributes to financial crises analysis through the following results : 1- An inventory on FIH debate which points out the unresolved problem of micro-macro articulation leading us to underline the institutional dimension, in the light of Minsky's later works. 2- An analysis of contributions and limits of FIH analytic conséquences in the characterization of MMC, which clarifies Minsky's specificity in the post-Keynesian approach. 3- An identification of endogenous factors of the Asian crisis, according to these two interpretations (micro and macro) of the financial bases of capitalism's instability, which enables to illuminate the doxical character of the debate on the respective responsibilities of liberalization and the "quality" of institutions. 4-A review of post-Keynesian debate on endogenous/ exogenous character of the subprime crisis according to a pluralist approach reinforces the idea of path dependency on institutional change in finance. Our work presents an explanation of macroeconomic and institutional conditions of endogenous behaviours evolution leading to the crisis. This analysis replaces wage deflation at the heart of financial vulnerability and then on the normative debate

Texto completoThe main activity of firefighters is the management of dynamic situations, whether common interventions, accidents, or crises. They are constantly working in teams. Therefore, to analyze their activity in a crisis management situation, it is necessary to understand how they function as a team and the determinants of the team. This thesis focuses on firefighters’ crisis management, and its purpose is to identify the factors that determine the efficiency of teams in crisis situations. The factors considered are various team processes and psychosocial variables. We examine the general hypothesis that the elements that determine team effectiveness in crisis management can be found in part within the handling of common interventions and accidents. Three studies were conducted. The first focused on the management of common interventions in real situations, which were observed in the first response vehicle of a fire department. The second study analyzed how simulated excavation rescues were conducted. The final study involved the crisis management of a simulated subway fire. Key results showed that team processes (communication, emotional interactions, and adaptations) have an effect on team effectiveness, regardless of the kind of intervention. Motivation seems to be indirectly related to team effectiveness through team processes. However, although the variables that determine team effectiveness are the same, they are not always involved in the same way. Crisis management, in particular, shows specific features in terms of team processes. These studies confirm the value of taking into account both psychosocial variables and team processes to understand what determines the effectiveness of firefighter teams. They also help recommend specific actions in training programs. These actions are likely to contribute to continuous improvement in the effectiveness of firefighter teams and promote taking psychosocial variables into account within firefighter structures

Texto completoThis thesis deals with two distinct topics, both of them representing central issues for many Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. The first part of the thesis focuses on foreign currency (FX) lending. Several previous studies point out that in many CEE countries, FX borrowing rose significantly before the crisis and has become a major challenge for firms, households and for fiscal and monetary policy. To evaluate the risks associated with excessive FX indebtedness, we investigate firms’ willingness to match the currency composition of their assets and liabilities and their incentives to deviate from perfect matching. Our results provide strong evidence to support the role of natural hedging, however, it is not the primary motivation for firms to choose foreign currency : it explains only about 10 percent of the overall corporate FX debt during the pre-crisis and 20 percent during the post-crisis periods. Most likely, the largest part of the corporate FX debt, at least in Hungary, corresponds to open carry trade positions held by non-financial corporations. The second part of the thesis is devoted to exploring the links between tax-benefit systems and labour supply at the extensive margin. The second chapter presents an alternative modelling strategy of labour supply to the two dominating approaches based on marginal calculus and on random utility models. Finally, the last chapter uses this model to quantify the difference between the Hungarian and the Czech participation rates that can be attributed to differences in taxation and welfare benefits. We find that the estimated labour supply elasticities for the Czech Republic are very close to the results for Hungary, suggesting that, at least in this dimension, individual preferences are similar in the two countries. Results suggests that about one-half of the total difference in the participation rates can be explained by differences in the tax-benefit systems

This thesis focuses on the practical aspects of this emerging international technical cooperation. It analyzes in particular the technical assistance missions organized by the International Labour Office until the implementation of the United Nations’ Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance created in 1949, which was the first multilateral program of international development after World War II. This thesis pays special attention to the situations where ILO expertise played a role and to the international experts and ILO officials involved in the dissemination of technical knowledge. Texto completoIn order to overcome the technological and social locks that are identified in supporting collaboration - for instance, the computer systems design problems that do not meet the needs of users and/or systems that are rigid and do not allow to deal with dynamic situations where events are unexpected and appeal to emerging measures - our work is positioned in the field of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) characterized by the dualistic social and technical aspects. This research proposes flexible information and communication system that supports the information awareness in the inter-agency collaboration in emerging and complex situations as crisis. These situations add to a collaborative work several constraints such as stress, lack of foresight, the multitude of actors and organizational boundaries. In crisis management, the various organizations – emergency medical service, firefighters, police and others - need to perceive useful information to them to complete their inter-agency activities. However, actors encounter problems that prevent them to reach their goals. This study brings to its scale, a contribution in computer sciences opened to interdisciplinary with the help of social sciences which rely on study of current practices to understand and analyze the users, their activities and the work environment

Texto completoUrban planning in Tunisie begain in the early 2000s with the arrival of forgein donors around the urban margins in the metropolis of Tunis. The Tunisian waterfront has been partially developed, with strong inequalities between the northen and southern shores. Despite constrained blockages, delays, and even partial stops, the first project (North Lake Banks), survived the last “crises” in Tunisia - the global financial crisis (as early as 2008) and the “political crisis” resulting from the 2011 Revolution. However, the second major project (South Lake Banks) remained on hold. In the meantime, project companies were set up, in partnership with foreign investors (the SPLT and the SEPTS). How do the projects of the Lake of Tunis relate to the urban planning of the Greater Tunis? How do project companies relate to the existing international structure? Based on a study of emporality and project internationalization, we hope to demonstrate the adaptability of planning, practices, and urban planning projects to both constraints and opportunities and to illustrate the reasoning behind land and property development on the processus of metropolization in Tunis. Finally, we carried out an evaluation of the urban quality between the “designed” and the “realized” from the representations and practices of users on the banks of the North Lake

Texto completoAt Reunion Island, many job-seekers disabled of more than 50 years old, are victims of prolonged unemployment and sink into the precariousness. This little enviable status which imposes them an economic environment ruined by the crisis and the very selective depiction, predispose them to the marginalization. The existence of physical obstacles, socioeconomic, discriminatory and pejorative representations are particularly harmful, discriminate the occupational integration of this senior public. Deprived of work which is a fundamental element of the identical structuring but also a means unanimously recognized of integration in the social life, he meets in posture of failure, undergoes important psychological disturbances. The depression and the identity crisis which result from the arisen of the handicap amplified by the effects of the prolonged unemployment, cause the emergence of the phenomenon of disintegration. Deeply affected, the individual weakens and does not recognize any more in a society which stigmatizes him and pushes him to the exclusion. Go out of this infernal spiral often causes collateral damage according to accounts given by those who were able to overcome it

Texto completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: This project seeks to analyze the representation of identities in Shiva Naipaul's travel narrative North of South: An African Journey (1978) as encoded in the binaries of primitive / traditional; civilized / modern; settler / native; civic / tribal and neo-colonial / liberated. By analyzing this select series of identities, this project aims to explore the fractured nature of identity as constructed in the post-colony. It will argue that the identities are rendered unstable by the ungrounded nature of the post-colonial space in which they are located. Naipaul concludes his travel narrative by qualifying the postcolonial situation as an abortion of Western civilization in the trope of Conrad's Kurtz. Naipaul implies that any identity in Africa is a simulacrum, a phantom double, a copy of something that was not there to begin with. He attempts to articulate the diverse cultures that he encounters as though he were apart from them without recognizing that he is essentially and inextricably a part of the various cultural articulations themselves. It is easy to criticize Naipaul, therefore, as a non-starter. With the advantages of hindsight, however, it is possible for the contemporary reader to recognize these instabilities as evidence of the post-modern phenomenon in which reality is not an absolute. As a modernist writer, Naipaul's efforts to understand these instabilities of identity as an articulation of culture are circumvented by a Sisyphean struggle wherein he attempts to establish a sense of ontological alterity in the narrative yet implicates himself, as well as his invocation of archival literature and hence his ultimate position of disillusionment, hopelessness and doom.

Texto completoThis thesis is set in a post-Fukushima industrial context. It focuses on the training methods for crisis management of a temporary support team in the nuclear industry and aims to contribute to the overall reliability of the socio-technical system under study. The thesis aims to investigate: 1) the articulation activities that enhance the efficiency of inter-teamwork interactions within a crisis organization and the interactional skills that could be supported and developed; 2) the training methods, suited for an ephemeral and pre-defined team, allowing a reflexive feedback on these cooperative activities. The activity analysis of the Crisis Technical Team - National level (ETC-N) highlights dimensions of teamwork-oriented skills based on a safety-oriented "collaborative know-how". These skills allow actors to carry out articulation activities that integrate the other in one’s own activity. Team members already possess these skills. However, the characteristics of these hardly ever encountered situations, the episodic nature of working together and the current form of the training exercises do not allow these dimensions of the team members' teamwork to be sufficiently developed. As a consequence, the support and development of these skills through a reflexive training apparatus appeared to be an important issue in the training of team members. Thus, a reflexive training device that aims to improve teamwork was developed, experimented and evaluated. This device is intended to complement the existing training sessions. It is to be transferred to the organisation, by involving peers from design to implementation - i.e. observations of the simulation and debriefing moderation. The evaluation of the experiment shows that the debriefings conducted by a pair of peers and a Human Factors expert encouraged a reflexive feedback on the cooperative activities of the team members and facilitated the a posteriori collective analysis. The analysis enhances the functional and meta-functional effects of the debriefings in terms of the development of the teamwork of the ETC-N. The thesis proposes to extend this approach to other teams of the organisation and to test it in crisis management in domains other than the nuclear one

Texto completoWhen a crisis occurs within a company, certain resources with particular characteristics emerge, helping those who suffer. We call these resources: “toxic handlers.”The role of this research is to understand what it is that “toxic handlers” do, why they help others in difficult. How do they do this? What can organizations do to help them? “Toxic handlers” rescue companies through an act compassion, but unfortunately they pay a heavy price for this. We have attempted to answer certain questions surrounding the creation process of compassionate resilience within companies. How do individuals, who don’t appear to be suffering in the eyes of their companies, find themselves full of compassion for their close colleagues? We’re asking ourselves what happens to a toxic handler. Is he or she a “carrier of compassion or of suffering”? How does this compassion or suffering come about with regard to the “toxic handler”? Why can’t employees who suffer manage to front up to toxic emotions? How is the relation between the “toxic handler” and the “employees in pain” created? Toxic handlers act as intermediaries between “toxic boss” and “employees in pain.” The actions of “toxic handlers” are nonexistent within a company unless there is an internal crisis and only if the “toxic handler” is also facing a crisis (what we call a double crisis). We have created an analysis model for compassionate resilience and have applied it to several large companies suffering from a crisis. Our work opens a field of research and brings together numerous perspectives concerning the problematic of compassionate resilience within a company

Texto completoThis thesis fits into the field of technology enhanced learning environments. It aims to resolve some existing limitations concerning the evaluation of Crisis Management Serious Games (CMSG). CMSG constitute an innovative alternative in which players try to manage a crisis situation. The findings motivating this work are: (1) the growing need for researchers to study the success factors contributing to the effectiveness of CMSG, (2) the lack of existing evaluation works taking into account the emotional aspect, and (3) the need to exploit the evaluation results to adapt the game to learners’ profiles in order to improve their learning experience. Stemming from these findings, this thesis attempts to develop contributions on both theoretical and practical levels that revolve around two main axes. Firstly, we propose a theoretical framework for individual and collective evaluation in CMSG. This framework is based on an analysis grid detailing the criteria and indicators for measuring them that can be classified under three evaluation facets: pedagogical, emotional and social. Secondly, we propose an approach to evaluate learners in CMSG based on two methods for evaluating the social and emotional facets. The first method aims to produce a quantitative and a qualitative evaluation of interactions between players. The second method aims to produce a formative and summative evaluation of learners’ emotional states at two levels: individual and collective. The obtained evaluation results are exploited to propose an adaptation of a game simulating an exercice for evacuating a building in a case of fire emergency

All relevant instruments adopted by the Council of Europe and the European Union are characteristic of the resolutely multi-disciplinary approach. In front of a criminal scourge and a major attack on humanrights, the difficulty is to combine a suppressive approach with one for the rights of the victims. In the perspective of creating a European criminal system of security, liberty and justice, the efforts to harmonise this offence, sanctions and criminal procedure, and the actual improvement of judicial and policing cooperation in criminal matters, are for the moment unconvincing. Texto completoPurpose: The purpose of this study is to shed some light on how some hotels and travel agenciesin the Swedish tourism and hospitality industry have adapted to and managed the effects of theCovid-19 pandemic, particularly in terms of strategic and tactical digital marketing as well as crisismanagement, and the lessons learned from this crisis.Theory: The theoretical foundations for this paper include digital marketing theories, crisismanagement and organizational theory. In marketing theory, the SCRM and the RACE marketingplanning framework models have been applied and in terms of crisis management, the crisismanagement process as well as the crisis curve models have been applied. In terms oforganizational theory, focus has been on organizational learning and the theories single-, doubleand triple-loop learning as well as learning in crisis.Method: This study is a qualitative study of two hotels and two travel agencies based on semistructured interviews. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the respondents tobe flexible and to make short-term adjustments to their marketing tactics. The tactical marketinghas included an increased use of digital channels and an adaptation of their marketing to theircustomers' needs for health and safety. It was too early to assess any changes in strategicmarketing, but some respondents planned to place a greater focus on value concepts such ashealth and safety. In practice, all respondents were engaged in crisis management and most of therespondents had some form of prepared crisis plans, which, however, were not adapted to such anextensive and protracted crisis as the Covid-19 pandemic. All respondents seemed to have gainedgreater insight into the importance of having effective and frequent internal and external crisiscommunication. The external situation has put a great deal of pressure on the respondents and hasgiven them lessons that they might not have acquired under normal circumstances, including acapacity to adapt flexibly and easily to new and changing situations. Although the Covid-19pandemic has caused a lot of stress and anxiety, it has also had positive effects that could triggerchanges in their longer term strategic marketing.

Texto completoThis sociology thesis is about the clarification of specific dynamics of pluralization, which determine worker's subjectivities, in the light of sui generis neo-liberalization process in Turkey. Through the data gathered during a field research on the mine workers of Zonguldak, workers of petrochemical industry of Petkim and workers of steel industry of Isdemir, we aim at studying the opposition between nation ¬state worker and glocalization worker. After examining the different moments of neo-liberalization in the context of Turkey which increase the disagreements between market movement and regulation movement and the various positions taken by the worker's union towards the same process, in the chapters concerning the field research, the worker's space is described on the basis of antagonism of affects experienced by the surveyed workers, facing the societal changes on the one hand, and transformation of the working conditions on the other. In this analysis hope, deception, security, desperation revealed themselves as the four affects that workers feels during the neo-liberalization process in Turkey. Finally, to describe contextual characteristics of the sample, this work makes some observations about the prevailing affects in the two ideal-types of worker: the deception of the nation-stale worker, which leads him to positioning alongside the regulation movement or to choose defeatism; the hope of geolocalization worker, which brings him more and closer market movement even though he keeps on seeing several sources of fear threatening the realization of his hopes

Texto completoThe economic and social evolution compared by two regions of Senegal in the process of decolonisation: Boundou and Gadiaga on 1885-1980This thesis is the analysis of the internal evolution of Boundou and Gadiaga (Eastern Senegal) whose economies have been little entitled to the colonial and postcolonial elites. The processes and mechanisms of marginalisation are so far softly reported regarding the Gadiaga’s area but this has not been considered in the case of Boundou, and indeed previous work exclusively restricted to the period of colonial domination and makes no “link” between the colonial and postcolonial manifestations of marginalisation. This exclusion of the overall economy of Senegal in many ways and any time is the result of the orientation of economic policies and low opportunities offered by public policies in certain areas. The factors of marginalisation of Boundou Gadiaga are basically structural order (lack of substantial investment and lack of vision and strategy on long run but weakness of sustainable economic approaches) and non-cyclical economic mechanism. Along the social aspects, the population undergoes heavily the economic consequences of the lackluster of the region, and the conditions entail the mass movement of population from rural to urban area (rural exodus) and the disruption of social structures, which increase the pressure of the economic on backwardness. It occurs on short run vicious circle of marginalisation since the accentuation of economic backwardness by social phenomena, encourages public authorities to push back investment’s programs or cancel it, by spotlighting the pretext of the declining population. The similarity of the economic condition between the “shared time” colonial and “owned time” postcolonial and the social behaviours considered induced effects does not allow the scheme management of the modern state of Senegal is simply the offshoot of colonial policy

Specifically, I study the labor market benefits of migrant mobility during an economic crisis, productivity gains due to migrant mobility in the reconstruction of a country in the aftermath of a war, and gains associated with a higher concentration of people in larger urban areas. I address these subjects both theoretically and empirically, using rich confidential social security data from Spain, Germany, and Turkey, applying a variety of panel data techniques and historical instruments to estimate causal relationships. The findings of these studies relate to many issues that interest both the academia and the policymakers yet on which little is known. Texto completoIn this thesis we have considered the transgressions made by heads of companies in Lebanon to the applicable labor rules (Labor Code, social security, etc.) and to the standards for good human resources management. These business owners have replaced these rules, among others, to suit their needs with the help of: sequential economic crises; a fragmented and weakened syndicalism; a paralyzed work inspection; a political power undermined by conflict; very high unemployment rates; abundance of low-cost foreign labor force; etc.Consequently, we have applied the Theory of Social Regulation (TRS) of Jean-Daniel Reynaud (1988, 1997, 2003), which have helped us in answering questions related to the redefinition of the rules of work and human resources management, other rulemakings, and the identification of the rulemaking actors, their strategies, and the nature of the rules issued. To answer the questions raised by our problem statement, we have conducted three field studies. The first in form of interviews with HR managers of companies in Lebanon. This study allowed us to identify the profiles of these actors, their career path, their involvement in rulemaking, and the issues faced at the level of HR. The second study was a sample survey filled by 450 employees at companies of the main economic sectors, from which a questionnaire was conducted on human resources management in these companies. As for the third, case studies were conducted in eight companies in form of 28 interviews with employees at these companies.Indeed, the data of all this fieldwork allowed us to detect forms of social regulation and to estimate the margin of applicability of Reynaud’s theory to the social regulation in Lebanon via HRM

Texto completoThis thesis aims to study access, socialization and careers of future Officers of the Merchant Navy in the context of deregulation of the labor market and reconfiguration of training. In the first part, the aim is to expose the conditions for the emergence and institutionalization of training Officers and its role in the dynamics of the occupational group, from teaching nautical knowledge during the Old Régime, to the recognition of maritime engineering at the beginning of the XXI Century. This social history of the Officers school highlights the structural nature of the "crisis" of the profession and allows us to study the rhetoric developed and the resources mobilized to ensure its survival. From the analysis of the results of two surveys and interviews with former and future sailors, we question how transformations of training, mutations in the labor market and changes in work impact traditional frameworks of socialization and careers. After completing a socio-genesis of social access dispositions, this thesis describes and analyses the process of socialization within institutions and on board merchant ships. Finally, this thesis ends with a study of the careers of former and future Officers. The purpose of this last part is to identify the career phases before focusing on factors which explain the high numbers of professionals leaving the profession

Texto completois composed of three chapters. The first two chapters are on nowcasting,
a topic that has received an increasing attention both among practitioners and
the academics especially in conjunction and in the aftermath of the 2008-2009
economic crisis. At the heart of the two chapters is the idea of exploiting the
information from data published at a higher frequency for obtaining early estimates
of the macroeconomic variable of interest. The models used to compute
the nowcasts are dynamic models conceived for handling in an efficient way
the characteristics of the data used in a real-time context, like the fact that due to the different frequencies and the non-synchronicity of the releases
the time series have in general missing data at the end of the sample. While
the first chapter uses a small model like a VAR for nowcasting Italian GDP,
the second one makes use of a dynamic factor model, more suitable to handle
medium-large data sets, for providing early estimates of the employment in
the euro area. The third chapter develops a topic only marginally touched
by the second chapter, i.e. the estimation of dynamic factor models on data characterized by block-structures.
The firrst chapter assesses the accuracy of the Italian GDP nowcasts based
on a small information set consisting of GDP itself, the industrial production
index and the Economic Sentiment Indicator. The task is carried out by using
real-time vintages of data in an out-of-sample exercise over rolling windows
of data. Beside using real-time data, the real-time setting of the exercise is
also guaranteed by updating the nowcasts according to the historical release calendar. The model used to compute the nowcasts is a mixed-frequency Vector
Autoregressive (VAR) model, cast in state-space form and estimated by
maximum likelihood. The results show that the model can provide quite accurate
early estimates of the Italian GDP growth rates not only with respect
to a naive benchmark but also with respect to a bridge model based on the
same information set and a mixed-frequency VAR with only GDP and the industrial production index.
The chapter also analyzes with some attention the role of the Economic Sentiment
Indicator, and of soft information in general. The comparison of our
mixed-frequency VAR with one with only GDP and the industrial production
index clearly shows that using soft information helps obtaining more accurate
early estimates. Evidence is also found that the advantage from using soft
information goes beyond its timeliness.
In the second chapter we focus on nowcasting the quarterly national account
employment of the euro area making use of both country-specific and
area wide information. The relevance of anticipating Eurostat estimates of
employment rests on the fact that, despite it represents an important macroeconomic
variable, euro area employment is measured at a relatively low frequency
(quarterly) and published with a considerable delay (approximately
two months and a half). Obtaining an early estimate of this variable is possible
thanks to the fact that several Member States publish employment data and
employment-related statistics in advance with respect to the Eurostat release
of the euro area employment. Data availability represents, nevertheless, a
major limit as country-level time series are in general non homogeneous, have
different starting periods and, in some cases, are very short. We construct a
data set of monthly and quarterly time series consisting of both aggregate and
country-level data on Quarterly National Account employment, employment
expectations from business surveys and Labour Force Survey employment and
unemployment. In order to perform a real time out-of-sample exercise simulating
the (pseudo) real-time availability of the data, we construct an artificial
calendar of data releases based on the effective calendar observed during the first quarter of 2012. The model used to compute the nowcasts is a dynamic
factor model allowing for mixed-frequency data, missing data at the beginning
of the sample and ragged edges typical of non synchronous data releases. Our
results show that using country-specific information as soon as it is available
allows to obtain reasonably accurate estimates of the employment of the euro
area about fifteen days before the end of the quarter.
We also look at the nowcasts of employment of the four largest Member
States. We find that (with the exception of France) augmenting the dynamic
factor model with country-specific factors provides better results than those
obtained with the model without country-specific factors.
The third chapter of the thesis deals with dynamic factor models on data
characterized by local cross-correlation due to the presence of block-structures.
The latter is modeled by introducing block-specific factors, i.e. factors that
are specific to blocks of time series. We propose an algorithm to estimate the model by (quasi) maximum likelihood and use it to run Monte Carlo
simulations to evaluate the effects of modeling or not the block-structure on
the estimates of common factors. We find two main results: first, that in finite samples modeling the block-structure, beside being interesting per se, can help
reducing the model miss-specification and getting more accurate estimates
of the common factors; second, that imposing a wrong block-structure or
imposing a block-structure when it is not present does not have negative
effects on the estimates of the common factors. These two results allow us
to conclude that it is always recommendable to model the block-structure
especially if the characteristics of the data suggest that there is one.

Texto completoEarly after the fall of the ottoman domination, the French travelers went to Greece in order to wander through a land full of history, with a glorious past but a deceiving present. Chateaubriand and Quinet were writers and travelers who reported the crisis lived at the turning point of the Hellenic war of independence (1821-1830). Through their gaze of “borders-men” – both writers and historians – these French painters of the Greek landscape described a plurivocal Hellade, at the beginning and the end of the war of national uprising. This study question the intrusion of history in their fictional travel narratives and report the making of their Greek thought situated at the heart of their respective career. The romantic historiography was just at its premises because history as a scientific discipline was barely emerging. Thus, through the prism of literature and imagination, travel narrative was a fitting genre for writing history, propitious to the fragmentation of speeches by the work of palimpsest. As Januses with their eyes turned to the past as well as to the future, in Greece, Chateaubriand and Quinet inscribed themselves in the history of their time, at the turning point of the European Revolutions, through a writing of the immediate history while painting landscapes with historical dimension
